Reporter Angela Mouly The Vermilion Gun Club hosted a Ladies Night on August 30, with 22 people having the opportunity to try out target shooting and share a meal together afterward.Theevening offered an opportunity for ladies who haven’t used firearms or only have a bit of experience. Treasurer, Dave Moore said, “It allows them to have a fun time and see that guns are inherently a tool; there is nothing to be leery about, but there is a proper way to use them.”
Ladies Night A Hit At The Gun Range

Following a knowledge and safety brief ing to take the mystery away, 12 regular members volunteered to help the partici pants practice shooting steel targets from 25 – 250 yards. “For me, it’s getting to do a variety of things; you can shoot a handgun with almost no recoil and change to a heavy rifle. You can get proficient at short range shooting and then try medium or large calibre; and that’s just with target shoot ing,” said Moore. “Proficiency and prac tice makes perfect. An afternoon out at the range gives you time to think or relax, just like some people do when they play golf or go for a bicycle ride.” Participants tried using a .22 revolver, a .22 semi-automatic handgun, a 40 glock semi-automatic and a .357 revolver. They also had the opportunity to try out lever action, bolt action, and a .223 centre fire semi-automatic rifle. Many of them also tried a 410 calibre as well as 20 gauge and 12 gauge shotguns. “Firearms are like shoes in a closet, with one pair for every occasion,” said vice president, Len Chetter. One lady inherited her husband’s fire arms and came to learn how to safely use them in order to take care of a recurring skunk problem on her property instead of having to repeatedly hire out the work to otherAnotherpeople.participant, Heather Rayment said, “It was so fun. I only shot one other time, and some never had. The instruc tors were really good.” “On the news, everything is very one sided, but in western farming communi ties the firearm used for predators is just as much a tool as the tractor,” said Moore. For families that have a shooter, he recommends that all members should have some training so they are secure in the house with everyone knowing what’s there. For hunters, he said you want to make sure you are accurate at the range. A person can spend can $300-$400 or up to $4,000 on a firearm; like cars with fancier models, he said firearms can be more expensive for the same calibre, and that the cost of scopes varies too.
President, Dwayne Gorniak said, “The number one biggest value of the fire arms community is community itself. The government labels and stigmatizes us, they try to paint us as a burden to soci ety when really the firearms community is the largest conservationist community. Unfortunately bad people are going to do bad things with whatever tools they have available. However, when it comes to hunters, everything they do pays towards conservation (by way of fees, etc.). A lot of them have a connection to wildlife and nature itself. Events like this allow people to see the firearms commu nity and culture (in a different light or as it should be); we are all just regular people.”

If you are an Elvis enthusiast the Vic Juba Community Theatre will be the place to be on Saturday, September 17 as they host Elvis: The Early Years presented by Jaedyn’sJaedynTributes.Pilonis an Edmonton born (2002) artist, and began showing a love for music at an early age while watching the children’s TV show, the “Wiggles.” By age six his interest in music had shifted to the Beatles when he performed ‘Twist and Shout’ as John Lennon during his very first stage performance in his grade one talent show. While researching the Beatles over the year’s Jaedyn’s interest in other artists and the music of the 50’s and 60’s was ignited as he discovered artists such as Buddy Holly, Jerry Lee Lewis, Johnny Cash, Roy Orbison, and of course Elvis AccordingPresley.tohis website, Jaedyn caught the Elvis bug after his guest appearance at the 2015 Blue Suede Music Festival held in Busby, Alberta, and in 2016 he, “made history as the youngest competitor to perform in the 15th Annual Penticton Elvis Festival, placing among the top seven finalists. Since then he has competed and won many awards includ ing 1st place in the Lake George Elvis Festival Non-Pro division in 2018.” It is said that Jaedyn’s love of music, especially of Elvis is evident in his shows as he strives to create an authentic expe rience for his audience, and his meticu lous attention to details are reflected in his performances with his replica costumes and vintage instruments he uses. The Vic Juba Community Theatre describes the show as a high-energy and entertaining show that will bring attend ees back in time to the golden age of Rock n Roll, while Jaeydn recreates some of the most iconic moments of Elvis’ career starting in 1954 to his final concert in 1961.Itisalso said that Jaedyn is a regu lar performer in Alberta and surround ing provinces for organizations such as Royal Canadian Legions, Lions, Rotary, Oilwives, Chambers of Commerce, vari ous senior residencies/lodges, and private parties, and his charity work includes performances for the Fort McMurray Fire Relief and Cancer Fundraiser. Dawn Hames Columnist Harvest is in full swing. It has been a very hot and dry harvest. It is important to remain hydrated to prevent dehydra tion, and even drink ing lots of water, still has people suffering with headaches and leg cramps. When out in such heat for prolonged periods of time it is really important to replace the lost electrolytes especially sodium, chlo ride, magnesium, potassium and calcium. There are sport drinks to help with this and little packets of an electrolyte powder to pour into water I know out in the coun try there are not quick and easy access to electrolyte replacement drinks, especially when you don’t want to stop combining for any reason so you can make a help ful drink with water, 1/4 teaspoon sea salt and a generous splash of fruit juice. Natu ral sources of potassium are bananas, potatoes, tomatoes and dairy. Dairy is a good source of calcium. Natural sources of magnesium are chocolate, bananas, almonds, pumpkin seeds and peanuts. To replace the salt a few shakes of sea salt in your water, and a few salty snacks such as peanuts, pretzels or chips. It has been too hot to heat up the house cooking big meals to take out to the field, but an recent easy one was a roast of beef, cooked in the slow cooker, with mashed potatoes, gravy and cole slaw. I dish it up on sturdy paper plates, cover in foil and then run them out to the field. Other meals that are super easy are

Apples are in season right now so you will find a fresh crop in the grocery stores. Because of the heat, I usually wait until evening to turn on the oven to bake. By that point, they had already been married eight years and in 1952 were celebrating 50 years together.Wemay take 50 years together for granted these days, but in the earlyto-mid 20th century, it was not as common.Tocelebrate their anniversary, 103 people from the community came out for an afternoon and evening celebra tion for the couple. The reception was held at the home of their daughter. Unfortunately, she was only identified as Mrs. Lawrence Barlow. The happy couple had been married on Aug. 16, 1902 in Sheffield, York shire, England and had come to Canada in August of 1904. They settled in Dresden, Ontario for the next six years but then decided to come out to the Vermilion district. At their anniversary celebration, a toast was given by their long-time friend and neighbour, A.C. Majury. Guests also included Mr. and Mrs. Sidney Cooper from Dahlton, Saskatchewan, who were the in-laws of W.F. Cooper. Lorna Hamilton Reporter Have you always been interested in Scottish dance but didn’t know where to learn it? The Sword and Thistle Highland Dancers (formerly known as the Mannville Vermilion Highland Dancers) is currently accepting regis tration for the 2022-23 dance year. The club has been in existence for over 25 years and recently changed its name to reflect the communities repre sented in the club. “Our dancers were not just from Mannville or Vermilion anymore. The Sword and Thistle Dancers is a name which connects the dancers who come to practices in Irma and Vermil ion. Dance families come to us from Sedgewick, Myrnam, Mannville, Irma, Vermilion and Lloydminster,” said Danielle Eriksen, incoming president of the Eriksenclub. went on to explain that anyone aged 3 years to adult can join their club and no experience is required.“Three and four year olds can join our Wee Lassies with their parents. We offer classes for adult dancers who have graduated high school or parents and community members who want to try out a new style of exercise!” said Eriksen.Asfor costumes, Eriksen commented that while most of the dancers purchase their kilts and aboyne skirts themselves the club does have several kilts that can be borrowed. “Many older dancers are also willing to sell their dresses to younger danc ers as they move up,” explained Erik sen.The Sword and Thistle does not have any fundraising and puts together two performances each year; the Robbie Burns night in Vermilion in January is a great family night and the Spring Fling at Lakeland College in April. If you are interested in learning this ancient dance that has been known to be performed originally over swords and shields before Scottish battles you can register and learn more at rb.gy/fvnlye or find them on Facebook.

The Klassen family has been operat ing Alberta 1 Fencing for approximately 10 years near Myrnam. Three genera tions of staff include David and his wife Helena, their 18-year-old son Abram, and David’s parents Abram and Anita. “It’s very important to properly main tain fences and keep them up to date; especially closer to the cities. A lot of people have their pasture on the side of the road and it’s very dangerous if cattle get out on the highway. In addition, some farmers like to calve in January, others in April and if the neighbour’s bull gets out, then their calving season will be mixed up and they aren’t prepared for it. They will also have different breeds so by getting mixed, the qual ity of their livestock can go down,” said DavidHands-onKlassen.he said, is the easiest and best way to learn. For young people learning to fence, he said by seeing it first-hand, it gives you an idea of how the job is done.

“It’s a simple job, but there are always trademarks that can make it an easy and fun job. It’s a very fun job because we get to explore the countryside. Working in a shop or in town, you wouldn’t get to see the many hills and forest, or meet all of the different farmers,” said Klassen. Alberta 1 Fencing runs until midDecember and they said their biggest challenges are being a seasonal job, working through the freezing weather the grass on the hills becomes slippery in the rain. He said family and being immersed in the countryside are the biggest factors making it all worthwhile.

“Sometimes you go into the woods off the beaten path and you see wild animals – deer, moose or even bears have come to check out our work a couple of times,” said Klassen. They converted part of a pick-up truck into a fencing machine by mounting a Heavy Hitter post pounder on the chas sis. On the side pieces from a swather and a truck include a hydraulic motor to run the transfer case, and a little diesel engine to run the hydraulic pump. “My wife and I usually pound the posts and my son and parents usually tighten the wire, etc.” said Klassen. Servicing within a two-hour radius, Alberta 1 Fencing has clients in Edmon ton, Athabasca, Bonnyville, Lac La Biche, Wainwright, etc. They provide mostly barbed wire fencing, but also do page wire, rails, and buffalo fencing. Other jobs are always the same old he said, but working out in the coun try in this region they get to meet new people every week. They even have some succession farm families as return clients who they are “definitely super grateful” to. To find out more about booking fencing jobs, you can call 587-280-1566.

Vermilion Allied Arts Council Submitted The Vermilion Allied Arts Coun cil has supported arts and culture since the 70’s, under the leadership of community-minded people like Art Boggs, Irene Smith, Linda WebbJacobsen and Brenda Ritz, to name a few. The VAAC seeks to bring a vari ety of live music, dance and theatre to our community. Canadian legend Rita McNeil, the Edmonton symphony and the U of A mixed chorus have graced the stage at Lakeland College’s Alumni Theatre along with the multi award winning play “Jake’s Gift”, Tupelo Honey, and the Sultans of String. In past seasons, sea shanties were shared with UK’s The Young’Uns, audiences jived along with Johnny Summer’s Little Big Band, and tapped their toes with Brad Johner, Brett Kissel, and Duane Steele. We played host to Canadian folk music artists John Wort Hannam, Maria Dunn and Scott Cook. And Christmas shows with John McDermott, Jimmy Rankin and the Heebee -Jeebees or the trib utes to Abba, the Beatles and Paul Simon were unforgettable. The vari ety and quality is always spectacular. The 2022/23 is no different and offers something for everybody. The season starts Sunday, October 16th with the Derina Harvey Band. A native of Wabush, Labrador, Derina’s powerful voice belts out lyrics from familiar east coast tunes, while her bandmates keep this kitchen party lively with jigs and reels! This Celtic infused show is sure to have toes tapping and heads nodding. In early November, Luke McMas

With his strong tenor voice, Luke shares original songs, deeply influenced by early soul, and sing-along opportunities with favorite Motown hits like “My Girl” or “Signed, Sealed, Delivered, I’mOurYours”!annual Mistletoe Gala is scheduled for Sunday November 27. Sponsored by long-time patron of the arts Lil Sweet, we welcome “A Horizon Ridge Christmas”. Get your family and friends in the holiday mood with traditional carols and hymns! The tight harmonies and polished a cappella of this fine group of multiinstrumentalist and seasoned musi cians are spectacular! This year there will not be a dinner prior to the performance, show only. In February, our series resumes with a return performance of Martin Kerr and friends on the 12th, for our Valentine performance. It’s quite fitting as he has written and covers many songs on the topic of love. Genre-hopping from folk to hip-hop, pop, soul, funk and back to his inti mate singer-songwriter vibe, Martin is often compared to the best of the 1970s troubadours - Cat Stevens, James Taylor, John Denver. His soul ful voice and lyrics connect with listeners of all ages and backgrounds. Our season comes to a close with a visit from the Slocan Ramblers, on Sunday, March 26th. A tremendously gifted group of Canadian musicians, this Toronto based bluegrass group delivers incredibly tight instrumen tation and spot on harmonies. Not a group to miss!

creep in Alberta has resulted in an increase in income taxes without an increase in real income. In taxation we only ever want to tax real income. Income that has been adjusted for inflation or indexed. This is not a new concept. Over the course of the previous 20 years, both federal and provincial policymak ers agreed that whatever the rate of inflation, citizens would be protected. The income tax system and benefits would be indexed. There would be no tax on inflation. Nearly all taxed income is indexed but not in Alberta. Not since Budget 2019 when the UCP government made the decision to not protect Albertans from inflation through indexation. Alberta was the only major province to re-introduce “bracket creep”. In Budget 2020 the UCP confirmed that provincial income tax and social benefits would remain “de-indexed” through 2025. Under this decision consider the impact on even one area of the income tax code, the provin cial basic personal exemption, or the amount that Albertans can earn before paying any provincial income tax. Basic Personal Exemption in 2019 prior to Budget 2019: $19,369 Basic Personal Exemption (de-indexed) through to 2025: $19,369 Basic Personal Exemption (if indexed) in 2025: $22,219 If the income tax system had remained indexed all Albertans would have seen an increase in the basic personal exemption as inflation numbers increased. Income needs to be indexed against inflation as money earned as a result of inflation does not reflect an increased ability to pay additional taxes. Had the amount been indexed, as is normal policy, then the basic personal exemption would have increased each year by inflation. This plan, by the UCP govern ment since Budget 2019, has also affected key benefits like the Alberta Child and Family Benefit, the Alberta Seniors Benefit and AISH because these programs are not increasing to balanceDe-indexationinflation. should never be used. Period. Its one of those things that can turn around and bite you in the butt. The UCP government has kept this quiet for 3 years. And now they would have you believe that this was necessary until royalty resources stabilized but, Albertans have never been able to count on this in the long term. This past week, August 31st, with the coffers overflowing, the UCP government announced the end to de-indexing but not for all areas and for how long? This UCP government constantly gambles with our money –yours and mine. Dawn Flaata

Dear Editor In Alberta we are used to rhetoric about the Federal government giving Alberta the short straw but here’s a new one and its not the Feds. It’s called “bracket creep” or de-index ation and this Alberta government is using it on the backs of everyday hard-working Albertans. Inflation is when the general price of goods and services increases across the economy, reducing purchasing power. The same paycheque covers less goods, services, and bills. Infla tion is a “hidden tax,” as it leaves taxpayers less well-off due to higher costs and “bracket creep,” while increasing the government’s spend ingBracketpower.

Tax Payment Deadline is September 30, 2022. If you have not received your Assessment and Tax Notice, please contact our office to ensure your Alberta Land Title address matches your mailing address. All taxes unpaid after the due date of September 30 will have a penalty of 8& imposed the day after the due date. A further 12% penalty will be imposed on outstanding balances not paid by January 16, 2023

There are a couple fire schools, but this one was my first choice; the program here is remarkable, and there are a wide variety of courses. The instructors are also great; they are both super knowledgeable and personable.”

Reporter Angela Mouly The Platoon 2 fire training students from Lakeland College will be host ing a Car Wash on September 9, at the Emergency Training Centre from 3 – 6p.m. Even though it was not required for their course, Dean Shawn McKerry, said Emily Bartz along with Rebecca Smith and Courtney Daley took it upon themselves to improve community relations and plan the event.“Ithink it’s so important for all first responders to hold a higher standard in the community because we are the ones seeing people on their worst days,” said Smith. “We all want to be people that the community trusts. The way we see the fire service, they are out in the community and are a part of it. And if I’m having a bad day, I want to trust the people that are coming to fix it,” saidTheBartz.newly appointed dean was a student of this school in 2006 and said they put a lot of pressure on themselves because they want to make sure they have exceptional people going out; including highly trained firefighters with some outside components that build extra charac ter and in turn great quality people. Coming up with the idea for a car wash Bartz said, “We have to wash the trucks every Friday, so I figured we have the facility and the manpower to do it. There are 20 of us, and we get to do it in the spirit of firefighting wearing our bunker pants; it makes sense to do something with water as a firefighter group. We also hope to put on a demo for children, showing them around the trucks and hopefully inspire some younger people.”

Learn More About Shingles

LOCAL
11The Vermilion Voice | September 6, 2022

AHS Submitted Shingles is a painful skin rash. It is caused by the varicella zoster virus. Shin gles usually appears in a band, a strip, or a small area on one side of the face or body. It is also called herpes zoster. Shingles is most common in older adults and people who have weak immune systems because of stress, injury, certain medicines, or other reasons. Most people who get shingles will get better and will not get it again. But it is possible to get shingles more than once. What causes shingles? Shingles occurs when the virus that causes chickenpox starts up again in your body. After you get better from chick enpox, the virus “sleeps” (is dormant) in your nerve roots. In some people, it stays dormant forever. In others, the virus “wakes up” when disease, stress, or aging weakens the immune system. Some medicines may trigger the virus to wake up and cause a shingles rash. It is not clear why this happens. But after the virus becomes active again, it can only cause shingles, not chickenpox. There is a small chance that a person with a shingles rash can spread the virus to another person who hasn’t had chick enpox and who hasn’t gotten the chick enpox vaccine. What are the symptoms? Shingles symptoms happen in stages. At first you may have a headache or be sensitive to light. You may also feel like you have the flu but not have a fever. Later, you may feel itching, tingling, or pain in a certain area. That’s where a band, strip, or small area of rash may occur a few days later. The rash turns into clusters of blisters. The blisters fill with fluid and then crust over. It takes two to four weeks for the blisters to heal, and they may leave scars. Some people only get a mild rash. And some do not get a rash at all. It’s possible that you could also feel dizzy or weak. Or you could have pain or a rash on your face, changes in your vision, changes in how well you can think, or a rash that spreads. A rash or blisters on your face, especially near an eye or on the tip of your nose, can be a warning of eyeCallproblems.yourdoctor now if you think you may have shingles. It’s best to get early treatment. Medicine can help your symp toms get better sooner. And if you have shingles near your eye or nose, see your doctor right away. Shingles that gets into the eye can cause permanent eye damage How is shingles treated? Shingles is treated with medicines. These medicines include antiviral medi cines and medicines for pain. See your doctor right away if you think you may have shingles. Starting antiviral medicine right away can help your rash heal faster and be less painful. And you may need prescription pain medicine if your case of shingles is very painful.
Good home care also can help you feel better faster. Take care of any skin sores, and keep them clean. Take your medicines as directed. If you are both ered by pain, tell your doctor. Other treat ments may help with intense pain. Who gets shingles? Anyone who has had chickenpox can get shingles. You have a greater chance of getting shingles if you are older than 50 or if you have a weak immune system. There is a shingles vaccine for adults. It lowers your chances of getting shin gles and prevents long-term pain that can occur after shingles. And if you do get shingles, having the vaccine makes it more likely that you will have less pain and your rash will clear up more quickly. Call Health Link at 811 to find out more, or speak with your family healthcare provider.

The Vermilion Music Festival has been dormant for the previous three years and is now being revived. The purpose of music festival is to promote excellence in music education. The local festival is part of a much larger system that leads from the development of beginning students right into professional ranks. More importantly, though, music educa tion is undervalued in terms of what music does for the developing brain. Music was on the curriculum in ancient Greece and remained there to the present day because musicians tend to do better in mathemat ics, tend to be more socially conscious, tend to work better in groups. There was a time when enrolling your child in music lessons was as ubiquitous as enrolling them in Sunday school. And they got lots of singing because they were also in Sunday School and people sang at home or in the car. Our society is poorer because we stopped doing that. Music Festival is set up to encourage people to engage in music, but also to foster excellence in its creation. The local festival committee is needing people for all aspects of their organiza tion. A reorganization meeting for Vermilion Music Festival will be held in the Vermilion Elementary School Library, September 20 at 7:00 PM. For more information phone Bernie at 780 464 2933.

Karen King Submitted Welcome back everyone. We are so excited to be starting the 202223 school year. Teachers were back at work on August 24. They made the trip to Wainwright, where they took part in a Professional Learning Day with all the other teachers from Buffalo Trail School Division. They started the day with keynote and motivational speaker, Darci Lang. They were each given one of her books called Focus on the 90%. The second keynote speaker was Gerry Varty. He was also their speaker in an afternoon class regarding the new Mathology. The other after noon session was led by Lana Lane and was about implementing the new Language Arts curriculum. School at VES started for students on August 30. There was so much excitement from every one, with lots of smiles and laugh ter and many summertime stories told. We had our first assembly of the year in the gym. We started with the land acknowledgement and O Canada. Mrs. Doherty introduced all of the staff members. Then we had a group activity before we went over the playground rules. We are sad to hear that both Mrs. Fuller and Mrs. Prill retired this summer from our school. We wish them all the best in their retire ment. New to our staff are Educa tional Assistants, Devorah Brown and Sawsan Elkadri. VES would like to extend a warm welcome to these two wonderful ladies. BTPS Central Office and Board have been busy over the summer preparing for another school year. Parents can expect to see a contin ued focus on literacy, numeracy and assessment practices this year, along with visible support for students and teachers engaging in the new English Language Arts and Literature, math, and physi cal education and wellness curric ulums. A variety of engagement activities also have been planned to help BTPS develop a new educa tion plan for 2023-2027. During these sessions, our stakeholders will come together to work collab oratively to identify priorities unique to our rural learning communities.

Sumbitted Anna Svenungard Welcome Back Spartans! Another school year at St. Jerome’s is off to a great start. Students were warmly greeted on the first day of school by student council members offering juice and granola bars to help power us through the first day. These awesome Spartans came in early to deco rate the entrances in our school colours and chalk the sidewalks with encouraging messages. It was a lovely way to start the day, so thank you to student council for their efforts. Teachers spent the days leading up to the start of this school year engaging in professional development and travel ing to Wainwright for our division’s Mission & Ministry Day. East Central Catholic Schools (ECACS) believes in grounding our work in our Faith. On Thursday, August 25 all staff of ECACS joined together in a Mass lead by the priests from our local parishes and Reverend Cristino Bouvette, our guest speaker for the remainder of the day at Blessed Sacrament. Father Cris tino is an Indigenous Albertan ordained in the Diocese of Calgary in 2012. He over sees the St. Francis Xavier Chaplaincy for young adults and is passionate about fostering reconciliation between the Cath olic Church and Indigenous Peoples. He was central in the Papal visit and we were blessed with the opportunity to hear him speak about how we can use our Catholic Faith to work towards truth and reconcilia tion on our personal faith journey’s. We have many new faces teaching at St. Jerome’s this year. Welcome to the St. Jerome’s School Family! Here is a little bit about each of them: Mrs. Nicole Riedel: “I was born and raised in Clandonald and now live in Vermilion with my husband Duane, and our two kids Oakland and Boston. I previously taught in Mannville and have been teaching for 16 years. I am very excited to be teaching at St. Jerome’s this year and look forward to a year full of fun and learning!”
Miss Taylor Heinrich: “Being raised in Vermilion, I am very excited to be return ing to Vermilion to continue my teaching career here at St. Jerome’s. I am looking forward to a great year with my grade 3 class.”Mr. Cain Collins: “Hello! My name is Mr. Collins and I am a new math/science teacher here at St. J. Although I am new as a teacher, this is actually my 14th year in the building since I was here all the way from kindergarten to grade twelve. I finished university during COVID, and taught for one year at Blessed Sacrament School in Wainwright. It was an awesome experience down south but, it is good to be home. Once a Spartan, always a Spartan.”
Mrs. Tracy Snider: “Having graduated from St. Jerome’s a “few” years ago, I am excited to be here and grateful to find the warm welcoming atmosphere has remained. I live outside of Clandonald where I was raised. After working as an EA and raising my four children, I practiced what I preach about lifelong learning and went for my education degree. I’m looking forward to a fantastic year in grade 5!”

The Vermilion Farmer’s Market ran August 30, and is held every Tuesday as well as one Saturday each month at the Elk’s Hall. The next Saturday market will be on September 17, from 10 a.m. –3 p.m. with lunch available. Eight vendors provided a variety of vegetables, Watkins, eggs, sewing, honey and baking. Breanne Orton said, “Shopping at a farmer’s market rather than a store is great because it provides an opportunity to cut out the middle man, and there is such a variety of items as well as coffee and visiting.” Orton was welcomed as the new market manager on July 1. Since then, she said things have been going very well and she is already looking forward to the Christmas season coming up. “Last summer I had an abundance of eggs, and began Farm Fresh Butt Nuggets as a way to sell them. The opportunity arose to take the manager position, and it’s a family affair,” said Orton.Kathy Naciuk with Home Sweet Novelties added that regular members often try to help one another out. Naciuk has been creating and selling her sewing and crochet wares for the past six“Iyears.lovethe interaction with people and getting out,” said Naciuk. World Suicide Prevention Day
• Diagnosis of a serious physical illness. Warning signs may include:
Talk about the situation as openly as possible.
• Planning or saying they want to hurt or kill them selves or someone else.

• Barriers to accessing social and health services.
• Traumatic life events, such as the death of a partner or friend, divorce, or financial issues.

It’s hard to know if someone is thinking about suicide, but recognizing the risk factors and warning signs is an important step in helping to prevent suicide. Some risk factors include:
• Talking, writing, reading, or drawing about death, including writing suicide notes and talking about items that can cause physical harm, such as pills, guns, or knives.
LOCAL NEWS
• Mental illnesses, such as severe depression, bipo lar disorder, schizophrenia, or anxiety.
• Call 911, a suicide hotline (see telephone numbers below), or the police.
AHS Submitted September 10 marks World Suicide Prevention Day, an initiative of the International Association for Suicide Prevention (IASP) in partnership with the World Health Organization (WHO), which aims to increase aware ness, build knowledge, and spark conversations about suicide.Suicide is an ongoing societal and public health concern. • Saying they have no hope, they feel trapped, or there is no point in “going on.” It is important to take any mention of suicide seri ously, and to get help right away if someone you know is in immediate risk of suicide:

• Don’t argue with the person (“It’s not as bad as you think”) or challenge the person (“You’re not the type to attempt suicide”).
• Tell the person that you are there to support them.
• Stay with the person or ask someone you trust to stay with the person, until the crisis has passed.
