The East-West Chapter of the Alberta Carriage Driving Association (ACDA) held a Triple Drive Event at the Vermilion Ag grounds on August 27 and 28. There were two Continuous Drive competitions held on August 27 in the morning and afternoon and a third compe tition held on the 28th; each day consisted of dressage, cones, and a derby course. The competition was organized by Chapter members and was judged by Kathleen Winfield, President of the Jury (Dressage Judge), and Byron Crook, and Technical Delegate (Derby Judge). A highlight of this year’s event was to have three generations of a family partic ipating over the weekend, grandmother Shari Weigel from Thorhild, her daughter Kelly Wagar, and granddaughter Tayten Wagar from Redwater. “I have been with the association since 1992 and this is the first time we have had three generations in the group, we have had two generations but not three,”

commented Irene Smith, member of the East-West Chapter of the ACDA. The weekend long event was a success and everyone enjoyed the competitions and“Itcamaraderie.wasawonderful weekend, and everyone seemed to have fun. We had participants from Okotoks, Stony Plain, Cold Lake, Edgerton, Viking, and Vermil ion. We are so thankful for all of our volun teers and sponsors. The volunteers come out and help in any weather, we certainly couldn’t do it without them,” said Smith.

The East-West Chapter is one of the driving chapters under the ACDA Associ ation and is a non-profit organization that services northeastern Alberta and north western Saskatchewan. The association provides carriage driver enthusiasts driv ing competitions, clinics, and many fun activities each year. The East-West Chapter is now in its 32 year and holds annual events each year. AND WHEREAS, Council deems it necessary to amend the ASP for R’Ohan Industrial Park; NOW THEREFORE, the Public Hearing for the proposed Bylaw will be held on:

The old fire station had an infrastruc ture needs assessment and an engi neering study performed as part of the municipality’s community facilities report and one of the major findings was that the building which was built in the 1940s had reached the end of its serviceable life. The construction of a new station was approved by the Council in April of 2020. “The much-anticipated new station allows the Lloydminster Fire Depart ment to better provide public safety services to the Lloydminster community of over 34,000 people and will meet the City of Lloydminster’s needs and growth demands for years to come,” said Mayor Gerald Aalbers. The groundbreaking ceremony of the new station located at 3752 47 Street was held in April 2021 to kick off the construction of the $10-million enhanced fire station which was funded by the Government of Canada, the Government of Alberta, and the City of Lloydminster.

In designing the new two-storey, 16,522 square foot building which is double the size of the previous build ing, the health, safety, and well-being of the firefighters were considered in each room and space right down to the corri dors. The new Station 1 has areas that are designed specifically for bunker gear storage, cleaning and drying equipment, and gear so that no cross contamination can occur in other areas of the build ing. The building also boasts a modern training room that is equipped with fire fighter educational technology as well as a four-storey training structure with three deck levels, that includes interior stairs, sprinkler props, standpipe props that can simulate high-rise buildings and techni cal rope rescue, while the exterior of the building includes a balcony for practicing aerial ladder rescue.

A1 protein experienced increased stom ach discomfort, unusual stool constancy, less desirable fatty acids were produced in their digestive tract, and they had increased beta-casomorphine in their blood. These children also had increased inflammation markers in their blood, and their cognitive performance was impaired. This study is important in that it confirmed the findings of other studies. There are so many recipes that use milk. Using a A2 milk for cooking can be a good idea for ease of digestibility. I have found that very few local grocery stores carry A2 milk, so it may require consum ers, speaking with the employees that order the dairy for the store, to be asked to bring it in. I have been using A2 milk for about two years, and I really prefer it. Currently, the only A2 dairy products that I have found are 1 percent, 2 percent, and 3 percent milk in 2 liter cartons. Every new video game release brings new play ers, many of whom will play a game and move on. However, with every game comes a select group of players who will stop at nothing to beat the game with the fewest mistakes possible and achieve the perfect playthrough. These play ers specialize in completing games in record breaking times. This community of gamers has been growing over the last decade along with the increased popularity of online social platforms. These self described “Speedrunners” compete to find new inventive ways to complete their favorite games as fast as possi ble. By replaying a game over and over these especially gifted individu als are able to find exploits in the game design and find the patterns that will allow them to abuse these exploits to achieve things even the developers didn’t know was possible. Speedrun ners are well known within the larger gaming community as people who abuse “bugs” or simple game malfunc tions in order to gain a special edge over the regular player. These bugs can be anything from the game char acter being able to phase through a wall in certain places or as strange as jumping on a wooden crate, grabbing it and using it to propel yourself through the sky at astronomical speeds. Very strange, yet fascinating gameplay can arise from these speedrunners. With an online database of the fastest times achieved in any game recorded and maintained by volun teers, it’s easy for speedrunners to compete in an asynchronous manner. Runners are even able to watch video clips of the competition. This social aspect of speedrunning makes it a very unique experience in between two players in a game called “fancy pants”. This quarrel went on for years between these two players, with neither one knowing the other person ally before it began. But when they would go back and forth beating each other’s time trying to finish the game in the lowest possible time it allowed the multi year long rivalry to grow into a lifelong friendship built on a shared interest in their favourite game. For anyone interested in speedrun ning, it’s really quite simple to start, just open up any game with a clear ending and try to finish it as quickly as you can. The Perfect Play-through Braxton Hoare Columnist

Dawn Hames Columnist You may have noticed that there is now A2 milk available in some of the grocery stores. A2 milk is the original gene that milk protein had centuries ago. Modern dairy is a combination of A1, or A1/A2 dairy proteins, specifically betacaseins. What we know about milk that contains A1/A2 proteins is that this milk is harder to digest and for some people it can cause inflammation. Digestive prob lems include stomach upset, and indiges tion. The reason that A1/A2 mixed proteins cause inflammation is that on ingestion a pro-inflammatory compound called betacasomorphine is produced. Beta-caso morphine can produce symptoms such as bloating, gas, and pain. Beta-caso morphine is not easily produced in milk containing only A2 protein. The breeds of cows that are more likely to be A2 are Jersey, Charolais, Brown Swiss, Guernsey, and Normandy. Milk cows that are genetically A2/A2, will only produce A2 milk. To determine if a cow is A2, the hair from a cow is geneti cally tested. The results will be any of the following, A1/A1, A1/A2, or A2/A2. Currently, there is testing and breeding to develop dairy herds of the Holstein breed that are A2/A2 to deliver A2 milk. In 2019 a paper was published in Jour nal of Pediatric Gastroenterology and Nutrition, that showed that the protein of A1 milk, caused more negative effects in preschool children than the milk with A2 protein. This study found that the children consuming the milk that contained the

As the years moved on Frank, and Florence, established a pet boarding business, a trail riding business, and a small campsite. A family friend even had a wedding there that turned into a ‘shotgun wedding,’ with Frank holding the shotgun. It was a great time had by all.

Vito was born in Scott, Saskatchewan in 1930 as a twin to sister Mary and younger brother to Elsie. Growing up on a farm in the Lloydminster area as the only son of immigrants, Vito was a true self-reliant prairie-boy. His high school years saw him do one-year of school by correspondence while honing his farming skills, developing his athletic prowess, and even winning a dance competition. His working life progressed from 13 years as a station-operator with CN (morse-code was his second language), to a mechanics shop business owner, a farmer, a gas-plant operator, and to a semi-retired ‘golf-course builder’. Vito settled in Mannville in 1966 as a single father to 3 children (Greg, Gail and Kelly), a highly unusual undertaking at that time. A stock parade was held at the end of the parade and it covered one kilo metre of track and was greatly enjoyed by everyone who watched it. William Steel of Vermilion won a special prize for the best herd pure bred bull. Steel was also the president of the Vermilion the perfect way to forget the problems of the day, or the fact that they had loved ones fighting overseas, or the looming election that was dividing the country. OBITUARY - Frank Gannon

In the year 1934, on January 11th, Frank was born, with Mrs. Shattuck being the mid-wife. He was the middle child of seven children. His school years were at Kokanee School. His rst job was with Jack Tucker west of Vermilion. During this time, he picked up the saying ‘Judas Priest’ which stayed with him for his lifetime. Later he was a rig hand in Drayton Valley. In 1953, on the advice of Jack Wright, Frank joined the Royal Canadian Air Force at the age of 17. His basic training was in Eastern Canada. After training, he served at Trenton where he serviced aircrafts that ew troops, and supplies, to Korea. During his posting in Penhold, Alberta he met, and married, Florence Tattersall in 1956. During their 65 years of marriage, Frank and Florence were posted to several locations by the RCAF. Initially they were posted to Winnipeg for 12 years. Here they started their family of Lora, Virginia, and Derrick. While in Winnipeg, Frank represented the RCAF in several boxing competitions. In 1967, he spent nine months touring Canada with the Armed Forces Tattoo. Frank also participated in the boxing at the 1967 Pan Am Games. After touring with the Tattoo, the family was posted to the Air Force base in Baden Baden, Germany for three years. While posted to Baden Baden, Frank enjoyed travelling Europe with his family, square dancing with Florence, and making new friends. After ful lling his commitment in Baden Baden, Frank was posted back to Canada in Edmonton. He completed the remainder of his 28 years of service in Edmonton. While in Edmonton, Frank worked hard to build a nest egg for his family by working extra hours xing vehicles at a local garage. During this period, he took some breaks enjoying the odd shing or hunting trip. When he retired from the Air Force in 1980, Frank returned to his roots. He bought some land in the Vermilion area and began living his dream. This dream was later named ‘Hidden Lake Ranch.’ On the ranch he trained horses, helped neighbors with their cattle round ups and brandings, and essentially everything that was cowboy living. Having cows of his own Frank would practice cutting and competing in Saskatchewan. He also enjoyed Team Penning, and Team Sorting at the local events in Vermilion. However, he most enjoyed working with the up-and coming cowboys at the Lakeland College Rodeo Club. Throughout the years of Frank helping, many students became extended family.

The 1917 Vermilion Fair

Franks grandchildren were a great joy to him, even if his nickname was ‘Grumpy,’ he loved them all. Frank enjoyed taking the grandchildren camping, teaching them the love of animals, watching parades, and having a good game of dice. On one occasion the grandkids were visiting and having fun in the rainwater. Frank was worried that all the water might run out, and he got a little annoyed. Later Avery told her mother that Papa got a little upset and Grandma gave him a ‘time out.’

PAUKSZTO, Vitold (Vito)

Frank passed away on August 22, 2022 in Vermilion at the age of 88 years. He is lovingly remembered by his wife of 65 years Florence; children Lora Gannon (Nick Marcetta), Virginia Barlow, and Derrick (Brigette) Gannon; grandchildren Edward Shawn Hampton-Gross (Julie McCarron), Amber Charland, Chelsea Barlow, Christopher Barlow, Bryan Blanchette, Emily Gannon and Kayla Gannon; great grandchildren Adeline & Evelyn Hampton– McCarron, Dylan & Avery Thomas and Louis Pellerin; as well as numerous relatives and friends. He was predeceased by his parents Thomas & Kathleen Gannon; siblings Dorothy McLean, Bill Gannon, Sheila Falyk, Leo Gannon, Gloria Kusher, and Kevin Gannon; and nephew George Gannon.

Vito eventually found his true love in Doris (nee Syer/Laurenceson), in Mannville. She and her sons Brad and Darrel widened his circle of loved ones with their families; he found his ‘home’ with them, where his mischievous sense of fun had found a match. He deeply loved his family… his 3 children, two step-sons and the many grandchildren and great grandchildren. Nothing brought him more joy or pride than talking about them all!

Vito loved music… all types of music. To pin him to a favorite genre was near impossible, but since he played the trumpet (self-taught) he might say he leaned to Herb Albert and the Tijuana Brass. Many fun- lled trips to the Big Valley Jamboree with ‘the gang’ might rival that though. His children can attest to his love of reading and learning; he went through an Encyclopedia series one winter! His grandchildren were the bene ciaries of his great story-telling; he had some good ones! While Vito has been described as easy-going, those who knew him well would acknowledge he could be quite stubborn - when it counted. That said, in his retirement years he would meet daily with his co ee-buddies at the Café to choose a headline to debate, and if there were none of interest, they would switch sides to re-debate the previous day’s headline! His nal years were spent at the Vegreville Care Center, where he created bonds with a most kind and caring team of healthcare experts, to whom his family is ever-grateful. To sum, Vito was a good man. May you all take a moment to reminisce on the times he made you smile. And Dad, while you’re ‘Swingin’ on a Star’, looking for ‘A Taste of Honey’ know that ‘You Are Always On My Mind’. There will be no service by request, a celebration of life will be held at a later date. In lieu of owers, please donate in his memory to the Mannville Minor Hockey Association, Mannville Riverview Golf Course or Patient Comfort Society - Vegreville Care Centre

Frank and Florence were also able to enjoy their love of travel. They travelled to Alaska, Ireland, and South Africa. These are just a few of the many places that they travelled together, along with many camping trips.

Frank’s last days were lled with quad rides to go check on the cows, and the campsite. He completed a lot of word nd puzzles, and especially enjoyed visiting with friends and telling stories.

A Celebration of Life will take place Saturday, September 3, 2022 at 1:00 pm at the Vermilion Royal Canadian Legion, 5144 Railway Ave, Vermilion. Re ections Funeral & Cremation Services in care of arrangements. Memorial Donations may be made to the Friends of Vermilion Health Center, The Kidney Foundation or charity of one’s choice.

Frank was also Louis’s ‘Sea Horse,’ pushing Louis around on his walker.

Vito was a natural athlete, evidenced by his Chailey Picnic foot-race victories, against much younger men. And let’s not forget the “Who can kick the chandelier?” contests! He loved hockey, having played as a goalie, and was an avid fan at minor hockey games. He excelled at golf, having won a few tournaments in his day, and he was a regular at the Mannville course, which he was so proud to have helped build. A great dancer, he taught his daughters by having them stand on his feet until they learned the steps. A favorite memory for them. The boys, on the other hand, had many adventurous trips with him, learning to sh and hunt.

Death Is Nothing At All Death is nothing at all. It does not count. I have only slipped away into the next room. Nothing has happened. Everything remains exactly as it was. I am I, and you are you, and the old life that we lived so fondly together is untouched, unchanged. Whatever we were to each other, that we are still. Call me by the old familiar name. Speak of me in the easy way which you always used. Put no di erence into your tone. Wear no forced air of solemnity or sorrow. Laugh as we always laughed at the little jokes that we enjoyed together. Play, smile, think of me, pray for me. Let my name be ever the household word that it always was. Let it be spoken without an e ort, without the ghost of a shadow upon it. Life means all that it ever meant. It is the same as it ever was. There is absolute and unbroken continuity. What is this death but a negligible accident? Why should I be out of mind because I am out of sight? I am but waiting for you, for an interval, somewhere very near, just round the corner. All is well. Nothing is hurt; nothing is lost. One brief moment and all will be as it was before. How we shall laugh at the trouble of parting when we meet again! We miss you Cowboy!

“This is one of those ‘if you build it they will come’ things; now there are more talks of people of building hangers in town. As we move forward, I think there is quite a good potential for growth,” said Balaneski. He also said that pre-COVID, Vermilion would only see five MedEvac flights per year, where now they have seen up to 94 MedE vac flights per year including transfers. As an example, a flight to Calgary takes 45 minutes he said, while an ambulance would take them five“Twinhours.engine air-crafts will not land here anymore because it is so rough. We are extremely fortunate that Beechcraft King Air MedEvacs still continue to pick up passen gers,” said Bingham. “MedEvac are larger aircraft and more susceptible to damage on their langing gear.”

The Vermilion River Flying Club hosted five aircraft and five drive-in members at their first fly-in for coffee event on August 27. Three of the planes were local from within the County of Vermilion River, one from St. Paul, and one fromChairViking.of the Town of Vermilion’s airport advisory committee, Larry Bingham, said events like these are common on weekends throughout the summer just as a destination for someone to go and pursue their hobby of flying, have a coffee and a visit. “It’s a social occasion and helps flyers brush up on their navigation, etc.,” said Bing ham.Two years ago the flying club took the initia tive to begin grant applications for surface improvement to the runway and were thrilled that the airport advisory committee was able to make it on the town’s strategic plan. After communicating required improvements and future opportunities, the committee feels it is an achievement to be on the list as far as capital expenditures. He said the town is planning to earmark money on a feasibility for the overlay by completing core drilling to understand what the base is like underneath, and whether it is structurally sound enough to withstand a top coat of pavement. A previous study adopted by council recommended that the overlay be completed in 2023 or 2024. The study also showed

zoning for residential use and more industrial lots.“The airport lighting which is an important component is in good condition and won’t require updating, which is a relief,” said Bing ham.Flying Club treasurer, Darcy Balaneski, owns the airport fuel service, Belairus Fuels. Operational since early spring, he said they are doing better than expected so far, and although fuel prices have gone through the roof he hopes once they come down Vermil ion will continue to see more air traffic. Since the flying club started up and since the fuel has been added, he said there has been quite an increase with two or three oilfield survey planes stopping in every week. Pilots appreciate the fuel and being able to access business in town. He said they see a wide variety of people from all over Alberta and Saskatchewan, often as a stopping point from one place to another. “Vermilion is well situated, and guests have been using the courtesy bikes to ride into town for supper or a ball game. Two planes from Manitoba took advantage of the overnight camping and liked it so much they stopped again on their way back. Vermilion even had a new resident move in from the Northwest Territories because they have family in Mannville but wanted access to the airport and fuel,” said Balaneski. The fuel is set up with a self-serve cardlock system, meaning those who fly in can access it in the middle of the night without calling someone in like is the case at many other locations. Some flyers travel from Lloydmin ster, and one came from Cooking Lake in the middle of the night excited they did not have to wait an hour for someone to arrive. Balaneski is excited that this could get more flight schools talking about the Vermilion Airport and it’s self-serve accessibility. Because it is located at a secured airport, race cars or snowmobiles can also access the fuel by call ing Belairus Fuels at 780-853-0926.

Geoff Hancock, owner of Hancraft Aero motive, is a past MedEvac pilot and said the larger turbo-prop airplanes are heavily loaded.“Loaded with life support systems, para medics, etc., a heavier airplane requires a smoother surface; they are also faster. They have to continue to roll down the runway faster and further than a small plane,” said Hancock. “We are short of ground ambu lances in this province and this is a way to take the pressure off them. There are two MedEvac operators in Alberta and about 13 MedEvac aircraft spread throughout the prov ince, and fortunately they have chosen to use Vermilion for the time being.” A part of the town’s existing infrastructure, he said the airport is ‘absolutely an essential service in Vermilion,’ they just need to main tain it. Much like the library, hospital, arena or streets, will not increase revenue, but is of value to residents. He said the cost to main tain is considerable, but not wild and that emergency services is just one aspect of use, that the economic benefit and spin-off to the community for having an airport is huge.

Vermilion River Flying Club Hosts First Fly-In For Coffee

“The Vermilion Airport is far from just a recreational spot, it just needs a little face lift right now. For example people in Brit ish Columbia were cut off by a flood, and small aircrafts were able to move people and food, etc. during those times. That is unlikely here, but you just don’t know why you might need it,” said Hancock. “We currently have one local operator for agricultural use, but if we ever had a bad outbreak of something, it could be very useful to our local producers to bring in other pilots because outbreaks can sometimes not be controlled fast enough by groundMembersrigs. of the club continue to enjoy working with the town to identify small main tenance projects, and enjoyed watching an entry in this year’s fair parade. They hope to continue having larger annual fly-in events earlier in the year, but may even schedule one post-harvest.

Man Van Is Back On September 10

A good way to monitor your pros tate health is through a simple blood test called a Prostate Specific Anti gen (PSA). PSA is a protein made by the prostate which is found mostly in semen, but can also be found in the blood. The PSA blood test checks the level of PSA to see if the level is high and can inform a physician on whether further investigation is required; early detection of prostate cancer is very treatable.TheProstate Cancer Centre is dedicated to educating men about the importance of early detection and is excited to announce the reopening of the MAN VAN. The MAN VAN is a mobile men’s only health clinic that offers free PSA blood testing for men aged 40-80 throughout Alberta. The MAN VAN will be in Vermilion on Saturday, September 10 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Vermilion Heri tage Park (5320 50 Avenue) where you will receive a free baseline PSA blood test for men ages 40-80. Men over 18 will receive blood, blood sugar, waist circumference, and stress check measurements. There is no appointment necessary to visit the MANTheVAN.clinic is sponsored by Inter pipeline, and the rural MAN VAN is proudly sponsored by AGAT Labs, Bayer and Nutrien.

Did you know that in Alberta 1 in 6 men will be diagnosed with pros tate cancer in their lifetime? Pros tate cancer is sneaky as it often don’t produce symptoms in the early stages. While many men who develop prostate cancer do not have elevated risk factors there are some factors that increase the risk of developing prostate cancer: The risk of prostate cancer increases as men age. Also, if there is a family history of prostate cancer it increases the risk depending on the relationship to a relative with the disease. Men with prostate cancer should encourage their sons over the age of 40 to get checked. A high fat diet can also increase the risk. While the risk is higher in black males than in Caucasians and Asians the disease can develop in any male. Symptoms of prostate cancer can include problems with bleeding and/or urination or inability to urinate due to the invasion of the cancer in the area of the prostate. These symptoms can also be caused with benign enlarge ment of the prostate but should not be dismissed as such, and needs to be investigated. Advanced prostate cancer usually invades the bones and may cause bone pain, most commonly in the lower back and pelvis.

“Some of our options this year are adult mixed leagues Monday, Tues day and Wednesday evenings. We have a ladies league on Tuesday after noons. There is a club 55+ on Monday and Friday afternoons. We also have special needs Monday and Friday after noons. Plus we have our youth league that runs Tuesdays after school for ages 3-19,” said Abrams. They will also be hosting glow bowl ing every Friday and Saturday evening. Regular public bowling will take place Saturday and Sunday afternoons and at various times available during the week.“Bowling is a great sport for all skill levels whether you just want to come and get in some socializing and meet new people; or if you are more compet itive, we host cash tournaments and also competitive tournaments that you can advance to provincial and national tournaments. If you advance to national tournaments flights, hotels and bowling fees are all paid for by Bowl Alberta and Bowl Canada,” said Abrams. All of their fall leagues beginning in September run until mid-April, so she said it is a great way for people to stay active through the winter months or as a way for them to just get out of the house and visit. On Monday, August 22 a few members of the VIBE (Vermilion Is Being Empow ered) staff were stationed out on main street on the corner near Long’s Value Drug Mart with an ice tea stand. The girls were giving away free ice tea in paper mugs to spread the message “Mental Health Matters.” They shared the senti ment that it’s important to spread mental health awareness and by offering ice tea and talking with people they are doing just that. The girls working at the free ice tea cafe said they had been doing many different things for the community throughout the summer as well as the rest of the year, and went on to say, “it’s a nice way to end the summer”.

Rolling Into Fall Bowling

Photo Braxton Hoare Peavey Industries has been supporting 4H clubs and youth for more than 50 years. Peavey Industries offer a daily discount for youth involved with 4H to purchase items for 4H projects. Annual 4H days raise a significant amount of money and the money stays in the province of where it’s raised. 4H BBQ money goes directly to the club volunteering at the BBQ. This year Peavey Industries was approached by Jessica Flanders and her club members from the local 4H Sheep club to volunteer. Peavey Industries supplied them with the food and condiments; they did the cooking and the selling with great enthusiasm. Peavey Industries would like to sincerely thank the 4H Sheep club for all their hard work and everyone who purchased from the BBQ or gave a donation. They managed to raise over $450 for their club thanks to all the wonderful folks who came out to support them.

“We established as Striker Lanes in 2004, but originally opened in 1963 as Vermilion Bowl,” said owner Kim Abrams. “Bowling is a great sport for anyone at any age (starting at threeyears-old and up).” To keep a great atmosphere, they strive to provide great customer service, and participants can enjoy their huge selection of music on the jukebox and the fact that they are fully licensed. They even have a party room for birth day parties or other special events.
