The CPCA Chuckwagon finals which were sponsored by the New Lloydmin ster Nissan had spectators on the edge of their seat from August 17- 21 as the fastest drivers and horses thundered around the track each night. Tickets were available for prepurchase or could be purchased at the gate for $20 per night for anyone over the age of 12, with 12 and under being admitted for free, making it a very afford able family event. Each nightly event had a theme with the first night themed Wild West Night, the second was Family Fun Night which had face painting and a bouncy slide, and more! The third night was Pink Night which was in support of breast cancer research. A special pink drink was offered and a portion of the gate admission for people wearing pink was donated. Each night pony rides were available for $15.
On Saturday there was a pancake breakfast held at the New Lloydminster Nissan in support of Big Brothers Big Sisters, and Sunday there was a pancake breakfast at the Lloyd Ex Grounds that provided attendees the opportunity to chat with some of the drivers and outfit ters on both occasions. Driver Calvin Fiddler commented on the events so far during one of the pancake breakfast. “It’s been going alright so far. I wish I had a little better show from myself, but all of that aside, the Lloyd Finals is a big show. It’s one of the bigger ones for the year and it’s nice to come out for the events like the pancake breakfast and interact with the fans,” commented Fiddler.Saturday evening attendees could attend the Chuckwagon Cabaret which featured Billy Dean with special guest the Rivertown Saints at 9 p.m. In night one of the five-day event Preston Faithful set the pace with a time of 1:14:45. Night 2 of the New Lloydmin ster Nissan CPCA Finals is in the books and Jamie Laboucane took the fastest time of the night with a 1:13:20. Night 3 was not quite as fast as night two, but was still pretty impressive with Jamie Labucane taking the fast time again with 1:13:69. Night 4 certainly didn’t disappoint with Logan Gorst coming out on top with a time of 1:14:27. (Continued on Page 2).

Letter To The Editor Dear ThereEditorare few among us who haven’t been touched by cancer. Many of us have had it ourselves, many of us have stood by while family or friends fought it, and sadly, many of us have lost loved ones to the disease. Yet Danielle Smith the lead ing UCP candidate has stated publicly that “Cancer is within your control until stage 4.” Does she really believe this about young children who have been diagnosed with or are fighting cancer?Ms.Smith is also advocating for the privatization of health care, stat ing that user fees and implementing co-payment systems will help to reduce the financial burden on the province. Anyone who is in intensive care or on dialysis would soon be broke. She has cited and promoted the health benefits of smoking cigarettes, as well as iver mectin and hydroxychloroquine (both of which were proven ineffective) for treatment of Covid. With a clear lack of regard for science, facts and the medi cal establishment, Smith’s views and perspectives are troubling to say the least. On matters of education, such an important pillar of our society, Smith advocates for user fees and has stated openly, “if parents aren’t willing to pay out of pocket to support the education of their own children, why should I?’’

Dawn Hames Columnist For various reasons processed carbs, such as flour, junk fats and white sugar are culprits in derailing health. That’s where a healthier version of dessert comes in. Here is a dessert that reduces insulin swings. The sweetness comes from monk fruit sweetener, which unlike sugar, has almost zero calories. The crust is made of very low-carb almond flour and cocoa powder pressed into a pie shell, that will be filled with creamy goodness.Monkfruit has historically been used for medicinal purposes going way back to the 13th century. It is a naturally sweet gourd that contains mogrosides that are sweet. This sugar is beneficial for those suffering with diabetes, as it does not cause the highs and lows in blood sugar, as other sugars do, and it helps improve insu lin secretion. Mogrosides are antioxi
In 2012 she advocated that E coli contaminated meat could be fed to the poor. One can only speculate what she would do to AISH, the homeless and other vulnerable, marginalized groups if she became premier. Unfortunately, not unlike Donald Trump just a few years ago, she is speaking to a broad base of supporters in this province and gaining momentum. Her thoughts, views and beliefs are dangerous and should be frightening to all Albertans. I think we can, and we must, do better than this Alberta.

dants that help lower inflammation in the body, thereby reducing cancer risk. The sugar in Monk Fruit feeds healthy gut bacteria, fights unhealthy microorganisms in the gut, and reduces the severity of seasonal allergies. Eating dark chocolate and cocoa powder has many health benefits, so go ahead and enjoy some every day. Studies have shown dark chocolate to be heart-healthy by reducing the risk of heart disease and stroke. Choco late consumption helps to raise good cholesterol and reduce bad choles terol. A compound in chocolate called anandamide delivers feel-good bliss, reducing depression, while also stim ulating areas of the brain responsi ble for memory, a positive mood, and higher thought processes. Scientists at Harvard Medical School recom mend drinking 2 cups of cocoa a day to help preserve memory and keep the brain healthy. Flavonoid compounds in chocolate aid in the delivery of more cerebral blood to the grey matter in the brain. Norman Hollenburg, a professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School, and researcher, has discovered that the Kuna people of Panama, who drink 35 - 40 cups of cocoa a week, (yes that is a lot of cocoa) have less than 10 percent incidence of stroke, heart disease, diabetes, and cancer. He believes this is because of the epicat echin, which is the bitter component that naturally occurs in cocoa. Epicat echin also helps prevent clotting and inflammation in our bodies. Cream contains both calcium and phosphorus. Phosphorus helps the body make use of calcium, plus it helps with healthy: red blood cells, and to protect the brain from diseases like Alzheimer’s. Cream also contains vita min A for eye health and other fat-solu ble vitamins such as D, E, and K which need fat to be properly absorbed. Who knew eating dessert could be healthy and delicious?

A Brief Look At Breage In 1905
The community of Breage was short and sweet. It came and it went, rela tively quickly in the grand scheme of things. Nonetheless, it existed and for a time it was home to various people. So, this week we are going to dive into the community as it was, during the brief year or so of its life, in 1905. The Breage post office was opened on April 1, 1905 with Matt Brimacombe serving as the postmaster out of Ross’s Store. The store did very well thanks to its location. According to Syd Giles, the store was the nearest one without going to UpLloydminster.untilSept.

Letter To The Editor
1, Breage was in Saskatchewan, North West Territories. That changed on that day when the community found itself in Alberta. Dealing with the first ever mail from the area was not an easy task. It was a postcard but with no postal supplies, there was no stamps. John Brimacombe had to draw a circle with a pen and ink and cancel the stamp with a signature. By late April, the community had its own doctor with Dr. Burris, who came from Edmonton on his way to Battleford. He liked what he saw in the area and decided to stay put and set up his prac tice.Several tidbits of information about Breage came out of the Lloydminster Times. In the May 16 issue, it was stated that Mr. Brimacombe and Mr. Ross bought a business and Alex Miller had taken up the management while Brim acombe served as a clerk. That same issue, it was announced that a Presby terian church had been formed with a Mr. Harley serving as pastor.

In the May 30 issue of the newspa per, there was even more news from BreageWilliamincluding:Rosshad travelled to visit the Grand Truck Pacific Survey. Mr. Radditz started up a tent black smith shop. A June 15 concert was going to be held through the Presbyterian church. The building of a school was proposed in the district. George Hunt had dislocated his right shoulder while taking a horse to water.Another issue, July 25, stated the following:“Perhaps the party who replaced their blankets in the rig after getting rig repaired in the blacksmith shop at Breage, found a coat mixed with them. Owner would be glad if coat would be returned to the post office in Breage.” Unfortunately, Breage soon began moving to a new location, Vermilion, around that time and many of the buildings would make the trip. By March of 1906, Breage was no more. As W.B. Cameron said, “almost before it was born the old hamlet of Breage died.” The Breage Post Office changed to the Vermilion Post Office on March 1, 1906.Contact Craig at craig@canadaehx. comSupport Craig by donating at

People are all self-conscious, but she said taking classes helps because it reinforces the things you are doing well. She is currently taking a class in Camrose and said when you paint with other people you get into a zone. Also if you aren’t sure what to do about something you are working on, she said one of the others may have a suggestion. When you get around art people, they do not have to like the whole painting but can notice some thing you did right and she said that is a good feeling. “I don’t know if I’ve found my style yet,” said Arthur. “Oil blends well. I’ve learned there are ways of correcting your mistakes. It takes a week or two to dry so nothing is permanent; you have time to adjust.”
She enjoys spending time paint ing in her studio lots or even while in Arizona during the winter. Retired from nursing last year, she said the next step for her is to look into the business end of things more. For a while she said you are really attached, but now the items she has created are piling up. Now she sees the value in letting go and allowing other people to appreciate her work in the same way she enjoys purchasing work from other artists in styles that she is unable to do. She has items at the Upper Level Pottery and Art Gallery for sale and said, “It’s a bit of validation, but it is very hard to put a price on.” For more information you can follow ‘.urbanart.’ On Instagram or ‘Urban Art’ on Facebook.

The Vermilion Public Library welcomed Kerri Arthur as their new Artist of the Month on August 15. Her collection will continue to be on display through the month of September. Having grown up near Vermilion, Arthur took a class in 2004 from Sandra Miller and said she’s been hooked ever since. She is known for her oil portraits but is branching out trying acrylics, watercolour, and sculpting.“Iwasjust so thrilled that I could actually paint. I drew a bit in school but never thought I was very good,” said Arthur. “First of all, if you are a young artist starting out, you should do it for yourself; for a while I got thinking I should do things other people liked. It could be drawing or scribbling – but do what you like to do; my best work is what I like to do. And try everything; you don’t know what your specialty is. You may get a lot of criticism, but nobody starts out really good. Keep going because you lovePerhapsit.” in years past and even now, she said people in the city may have more access to extras, and she wishes there were more opportunities for art, but it is getting better. Seeing others from the area come out and paint helped her be willing to put her work there.out

The Vermilion Voice would like to remind everyone that road safety is a shared responsibility. Do your part this back to school season to make sure students and adults get to school and work with out a scratch. Here are some great safety tips I have found. As students head back to the classroom, keep these safety tips in mind. Drivers It’s back to school and school zones are in effect. The speed limit within school zones is 30 km/hr. Drivers should familiarize themselves with the specific times during the school day when the school zones in their area are in Driverseffect. should remember to slow down in school zones and be particu larly alert for students during school hours, especially when dropping off and picking up children from school. When a school bus activates its alternately flashing red lights, it is signaling that it is going to stop. Driv ers must stop too. It is illegal to pass a stopped school bus as long as its red lights remain activated. Drivers should watch for students at crosswalks and obey the signals of crossing guards and traffic control devices.Driver distraction is a major factor in all collisions. Put away electronic devices, beverages and food while driving. Avoid distracted driving and focus on the road and traffic. Be on the lookout for children and students walking to school as you pull out or back out of your garage and driveway. Students If waiting for a school bus, stand in an area which is safe, well-lit and away from the road. If walking to school, walk on the side walk and cross roads and streets at marked crosswalks and controlled intersections.Ifthereare not any sidewalks, walk on the left-hand side of the road, facing oncoming traffic and staying as far away from traffic as possible. Stay alert when crossing the street and watch for traffic, even if you have the right of way. In the dim early morning hours or on dark evenings, wear brightly-coloured clothing, a reflective arm band or cloth ing with reflective strips which will help you to be seen by motorists. If riding a skateboard, scooter or roller-blading to school, ensure that you are wearing your safety gear. In Alberta, youth under the age of 18 years, must wear a helmet when riding a bicycle at all times. Don’t be a distracted pedestrian. Listening to loud music on headphones or texting on a smartphone while walk ing may make you less aware of the traffic dangers around you. Parents Show your child a safe route by which to walk to and from school. Make sure they know how to use safely a crosswalk and obey all traffic control devices and crossing guards. Discourage your child from taking shortcuts through parking lots or jaywalking to and from school. If waiting for a school bus, ensure your child is aware of the traffic hazards which may be present near the bus stop. Show them a safe place where they may wait to catch the bus. Instruct your child never to run after a school bus in an effort to catch it as neither the bus driver nor other motor ists may see them on the road. As a pedestrian, do not always assume that you have the right of way. If you decide to meet your child at the bus stop after school, wait at the bus stop itself: not across the street from it. Children may forget traffic safety rules in their excitement to see you after their school day and dash across the street.

Submitted According to psychologists, children as young as nine years old can walk home alone from school. As long as they have the cognitive ability needed to cross the street safely and there’s a responsible adult waiting at home, entrusting kids to commute on their own will have positive results. As a parent, however, it’s up to you to determine whether your children have the maturity needed to make the commute without adult supervision. Start by talking to them. Do they seem excited by the prospect? If they appear worried or reticent, they may not be ready.

Things to consider Even if your kids seem mature enough, there are some things to think about before sending them out on their own.Are there laws in your area that dictate when children can commute to school on their own? How close is the school? Are there busy or dangerous streets on the way? Are your kids familiar with pedestrian safety rules? Do they respect these rules when they walk with you? Are there crossing guards in the area?Ifthe school is very close to your home, you’ll likely feel more comfortable letting them walk on their own. You can also talk to other parents who live nearby to see if their kids and yours can make the trip together. Take it slow When first letting your chil dren walk to school on their own, it’s a good idea to start with a trial period. For exam ple, your kids could begin by coming home alone one day a week. Ask them how it went. If they like it, you can add another day each week.

“The maze started out during COVID as a safe way for people to get out with no one around and share some time with their family. It’s blossomed from there with a lot of good feedback. We just sort of felt like during these challenging times with inflation, not many activities were afford able anymore, and this is completely free other than gas to get here,” said Caleb Sunderland.TheSunderlands operate a multigenerational family run farm, and simply ask that participants try not to damage the corn by tramping it down or ripping it out. The corn doubles as feed for their cattle during winter and keeping the corn in good condition keeps the mazes fun for everyone else as well. He added that getting outdoors and being active is important to boost physi cal and mental health, and that dogs can even participate if kept on a leash.

reasons; it’s an activity you can get a bit of both physical and mental exercise with no obligations. Children can run and play and feel safe,” said Sunderland.
The 3rd Annual Sunderland Corn Maze is well underway and will remain open through September and October. The maze is free, open to all ages, and the public is encouraged to try out their hand at the clues and trivia found throughout. Two mazes are set up this year; one a 15 minute to half an hour trek with the same entry and exit; and a second more challenging maze with Edmonton Oilers trivia and a separate exit expected to take 1 – 3 hours. In the hot weather, partici pants are reminded to bring water. When guests arrive at the Sunderland Hog Farm just north of Paradise Valley along Highway 897, they will find a checkin area with a blue bin (inside are game sheets visitors can play along with). Scav enger hunt clues will lead participants through each maze. Their furthest trav ellers so far were a couple from Poland who had been doing a cross Canada trek and saw the corn maze on Google maps. Even though they weren’t familiar with the Edmonton Oilers, Sunderland said they were still able to solve all of the clues and mazes.
Adding a bit of competition for attend ees, the Sunderlands have put up an eight man tent as a grand prize at the end of the year. All attendees are awarded points as well as additional points given for solving maze 1 or maze 2.

On Saturday, the family welcomed approximately 250 visitors with families travelling from all over the province to visit the farm which included more local visitors and also more families with young children than in previous years. Visitors were able to meet the family, plus their guardian livestock dog Lizzie and cattle puppy in training Chief, and go on guided livestock tours where they were able to hold newly-hatched chicks and ducklings.
Submitted The Wasylik family — Rick and Johanna, Charlotte and her fiancé Rob McClymont, Nick, and Alex — welcomed visitors on Saturday, August 13th to Chatsworth Farm northwest of Vermilion for Alberta Open Farm Days (OFD). It was the farm’s third year participating in the province-wide program which is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year; OFD is a part nership of Alberta Agriculture, Travel Alberta, and the Alberta Association of Agricultural Societies which gives Albertans the chance to experience a day on a farm and understand where their food comes from. It is an opportu nity to meet the people who grow and raise food in Alberta and taste some local foods directly from the farm.
The day also featured tours of the family’s garden, machinery demonstrations (making small square bales and unloading large round bales), and hands-on farm activities including a Ukrainian stone flour mill (“zhorna”) with samples of the family’s heritage Red Fife wheat, learning how to put ear tags in cattle, a rope-making machine for kids, a crop ID station with sheaves and grain (extra thanks to Caribou’s Corn Maze in BC for the additional crops and forage informa tion), and a New Holland pedal tractor, and machinery displays from Highline Manufacturing, Ireland Farm Equip ment, and Webb’s Machinery. This year, the farmers market was expanded to include Berry View Farms (Lloydminster), Bonne Vie Bakery (Edmonton; baker Larry Harris may be familiar to readers from The Great Canadian Baking Show), Chatsworth Farm, Copper Cork Distillery, Familia Brewing (Pigeon Lake), J6 Baking with Isabelle Jacula (Derwent), Pottery by Dellaney (Mannville), and Wilds Acre Micro greens (Beaumont). To keep every one cool, The Scoop Lloydminster and the Icycle Bicycle were on hand serving up ice cream treats. For the first time, the day included a BBQ lunch, featur ing Chatsworth Farm’s own all-beef hot dogs, custom made in Edmonton with the farm’s own beef roasts, with Bonne Vie Bakery buns, and farm-made relish, pickled red onions, bread and butter pickles, and quick pickled cabbage.
The Wasylik family would like to thank all of their sponsors and part ners who made Open Farm Days at Chatsworth Farm possible: 840 CFCW, ATB Financial, Alberta Beef Producers, Cornerstone Co-op, Crowd Design Inc., Highline Manufactur ing, Ireland Farm Equipment, Klassen Industries, Pentacon Energy Services Inc, the Snelgrove Family, Town of Vermilion, UFA, Vermilion, Vermil ion Chamber, Vet Clinic, and Webb’s Machinery. And a very special thank you to all of the volunteers who came from near and far. See you next year!
