Honouring The 151st Battalion C Company

In honour of the 151st Battalion C Company of the Canadian Expeditionary Force the Royal Canadian Legion Field Marshal Alexander Branch No. 11 in collaboration with Robert Snelgrove is building a memorial site at the Vermilion Public Cememtery next to the veteran plot.

Four years ago the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 11 received a Community Facility Enhancement grant to help improve the cemetery plots of veterans buried at the site.

“We have worked on repairing some of the headstones that are currently here, straightening them out and refacing them ac c ording to the spec ial re q u ire m e nt s s et o u t by veter a n s affairs as each headstone has a standardized layout,” said Legion member Bruce Marriott. He also mentioned that the Legion has worked with the Town

of Vermilion to secure more land for veteran burial spots as they currently only have one row left available.

Rober t Snelgrove who has a personal interest in the 151st Battalion C Company due to his great uncle Thomas Snelgrove being a member of that company has taken on the role of technical advisor for the project and has secured an iron memorial sign which has been placed on the site in honour of those that served in the company. He has also donated equipment and time to help level the area where a gazebo has been built with benches donated by Anton Krys.

“It is our hope to find information on as many of the soldiers which served with the 151st Bat talion so we can erect plaques to honour them. I feel it is important to recognize the sacrifice they made to provide us the freedoms in which we have today,” said Snelgrove.

construction it is the groups hope that when finished it will have a peaceful aura with grass, trees the plaques and benches where family members and members of the public can visit to learn of, reflect on and honour those who

served.

Town Council Update

A Regular Town Council Meeting was held on November 2. Here are some of the highlights: Sgt. Dunsmore of the Vermilion Detachment attended council to give the quarterly report. He reviewed the detachment staffing and indicated that they are fully staffed at present. Sgt. Dunsmore explained The RCMP Provincial Policing Report template that the Sgt. is now submitting to the Town for reporting is used throughout the province and provides an easier to read and consistent format.

The three area goals that the detachment will focus on over the next year are: Crime Reduction - Property Crime, Police/Community Relations - Consultations and Connections, and Traffic Enforcement.

Sgt. Dunsmore commented that property crime is an issue throughout Alberta. He also indicated that the decrease in property crime is a result of prevention efforts by members.

The Council voted to cancel the November 16 regular meeting to allow for the council members that will be attending it, to travel safely to the Alberta Urban Municipalities Association (AUMA) 2021 Convention in Edmonton that evening.

Council moved that Council for the Town of Vermilion approve the use of $8,100 in funds from future building reserve for concrete work and engineering fees to increase building accessibility of the Vermilion Public Library. The money will be used to extend the ramp on the North side of the building by the main entrance. This extension will provide easier accessibility into the library for mobility scooters.

Meetings can now occur in person at the Town office, with members of the public invited to join the council. You can also continue to watch Council meetings through the Town’s YouTube channel which you can access through their website. The next regular Council meeting is December 7, at 7 p.m.

Rocky Mountain Equipment Names Recipients Of 2021 Ag Society Grant

Rocky Mountain Equipment launched its Right by You Ag Society Grant in May of 2021. The grant program was to demonstrate their commitment to doing Right by You across the Prairie provinces.

They received 120 applicants who had projects that would enhance the lives of community members and the decision to narrow down the successful recipients was extremely challenging according to a news release from Rocky Mountain Equipment.

The following four agricultural societies have been chosen as recipients of $10,000 each toward their initiatives: the Marwayne

Ag Society and Drumheller Stampede and Agricultural Society in Alberta, the Melfort Agricultural Society in Saskatchewan, and Manitoba’s Hamiota Agricultural Society.

The Marwayne Ag Society in Alberta is using the grant to purchase a new hockey score clock for their arena.

“The arena is a place for the whole community to gather,” says Carolyne Clayton of the Marwayne Arena Board.

“Making the hockey experience better for the kids and community is something we’ve been wanting to do for years.”

In Saskatchewan, the Melfort Agricultural Society will be increasing accessibility to the grandstand for patrons with mobility issues. “In addition to installing a paved pathway from the fairgrounds, we’ll be rebuilding a user-friendly ramp and viewing platform,” Melfort’s Kim Eskowich says.

“The ones that were existing were aged and in need of a lot of TLC. For the safety of the kids and the community, a new structure would be very helpful,” says Hamiota’s Kristi Argue.

Buffalo Trail Public Schools Fall Updates

Buffalo Trail Public Schools (BTPS) shared the new School Board members with their communities this past week.

They have six new trustees this fall, and three returning members. At their Organizational meeting on October 27, the Board of Trustees voted Stephanie Spornitz as the BTPS Board Chair with Darla Yonkman as Vice Chair.

Student enrollment as of September 30th, 2021, was at 3840. This is a very small decrease in enrollment from the previous September, when there were 3904 registered students. BTPS stated that enrollment over the year always seems to be fairly stable within the schools.

Schools have been very active this

fall, with plenty of extracurricular activities taking place. Several volleyball games and cross-country events have occurred throughout the division. There have also been many virtual awards ceremonies hosted by the schools to celebrate student learning and achievement.

Many of the student leadership groups held Hallowween activities for their fellow students, and were very creative in their planning. Please check out the schools’ social media accounts for pictures and updates of things happening in the buildings.

War Amps Supports Call For Prosthetic Funding Reform In Alberta

OTTAWA, November 2, 2021 – The War Amps is supporting a call by Alberta amputees and advocates to reform prosthetic funding in the province.

The situation was recently highlighted by CBC Edmonton, which reported on Angela Oakley’s struggle to receive funding from the Alberta Aids to Daily Living (AADL) program for the artificial limb prescribed by her medical professionals after losing her leg to a bone infection.

“Unfortunately, we’ve seen countless similar cases,” said Alexis McConachie, who directs The War Amps Advocacy Program. “We’re certain that the average Albertan would be shocked to know that if they or a family member lose a limb, they could be faced with a personal balance of thousands of dollars for even the most basic artificial limb that will restore only a semblance of their previous function.”

Alberta Health spokesperson Carolyn Gregson responded in an interview last month that, the “Alberta Aids to Daily Living program is intended to meet basic needs to help Albertans remain independent.”

McConachie points out that this statement does not reflect the reality of the impact of Alberta’s policy towards amputees. “In our many years of experience, we would stress that, in Alberta and indeed across the country, both public and private funding agencies create and adhere to policies that do not reflect a realistic assessment of living with amputation, and that these inadequate policies prevent amputees from being able to access prosthetic care that is medically prescribed and essential to their everyday functionality.”

For those who cannot afford to pay thousands out of pocket, few alternatives exist. For many, crowdfunding has proven necessary, a veritable canary in the coal mine pointing to a distressing state of affairs for Canada’s healthcare system. It is also only a stop-gap solution, given that amputees will understandably be reluctant or simply unable to repeatedly appeal to friends and family for the subsequent replacement limbs they will need during their lifetime.

“It is unimaginable in the 21st century that seriously disabled amputees would have to rely on their families and communities in this way to cope with the basic financial requirements,” said McConachie.

“Hence, as part of The War Amps Crusade for Reform for prosthetic funding, we endeavour to hold all funding

agencies, including Alberta’s, to a full accounting on material issues and, case by case, challenge inadequate funding where required,” McConachie said.

BACKGROUNDER: Access to Funding: A Systemic Problem Across Canada Due to Canada’s constitutional framework, healthcare is a provincial responsibility. The Canada Health Act mandates that all provinces must cover the cost of “essential healthcare services,” defined as those administered by doctors in hospitals. Anything outside of essential services are deemed to be provided “at the discretion of the province.”

As a result, provinces and territories in Canada have used their discretionary authority to create no less than 13 different public regimes for covering the cost of prosthetic care. Some provinces offer no funding at all, unless the amputee is on social assistance. For those that do provide funding, each one of these systems fails in a unique (and creative) manner to adequately respond to the reality of living with amputation and relying on prosthetic care. As a result, the lack of access to quality mobility aids, devices and assistive technology at an affordable cost remains a barrier to accessibility for Canadian amputees.

While the up-front cost of an appropriate, medically necessary prosthesis appears expensive, in the long term it will save costs. Prostheses have been demonstrated to increase safety and security, and to reduce the incidence of additional conditions associated with amputation. Subsequently, a decrease in concurrent conditions translates to a decrease in the costs associated with them.

Unfortunately, public and private funding agencies do not realize this economic consequence when they create limiting prosthetic policies or issue coverage denials.

Indeed, the choice is to pay now for the prosthesis, or pay later for the additional health issues.

A UN Violation It is The War Amps position that Canada is in violation of its international obligations under the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.

Brian Forbes, Chair of the Executive Committee of The War Amps, points out that “Article 20 of this convention clearly provides that state parties must take steps to facilitate access to quality mobility aids, devices and assistive technologies, including making them available at affordable costs, to ensure personal mobility with the greatest

possible independence for persons with disabilities.”

Canada ratified this Convention in 2010, while seeming to completely overlook this international legal obligation.

Amputees, and others who rely on assistive technology for their mobility, do not have access to the mobility aids they need at an affordable price.

“Canada’s failure to appropriately fund artificial limbs for amputees is even more shameful when we consider that the World Health Organization (WHO) has identified artificial limbs as a “Priority Assistive Product” through the GATE Initiative (Global Co-operation on Assistive Technology),” said Forbes.

“If Canada were to truly follow through on their commitment as a signatory to this convention, it is our position that they would be obligated to make sweeping changes to funding for artificial limbs across the country,” he said. “As it stands, there is little doubt that this Convention remains an important and underutilized tool to improve funding for artificial limbs in Canada.”

The War Amps has a longstanding status of a nongovernmental organization in the United Nations Human Rights system and has brought a number of claims to United Nations committees to gain proper recognition of significant human rights violations affecting Canada’s Thalidomide survivors, Hong Kong veterans, and Indigenous veterans.

Forbes concluded: “Should Canada and the individual provinces fail to comply with the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities by providing adequate and equitable funding to assist Canadian amputees, we will not hesitate to initiate appropriate action in accordance with the human rights protocols available under this UN convention so as to compel Canada to live up to its international legal obligaAlexis McConachie. Remembrance Day Poppy

The poppy is a sym bol of remem brance for those that fought tyranny.

Remembrance Day is a time to acknowledge the brave men and women that fought for the freedoms that we have often taken for granted, the freedom of thought and speech. The fight was for the right for democracy and honest elections. They gave us the gift to live in a land of peace.

The fight was for human rights. Our freedom is precious. We have enjoyed freedom because of the great sacrifices, suffering and sorrow that were made by unknown others. Mothers lost sons, wives lost their

husbands and children lost their fathers.

Gone were brothers, sisters and unborn grandchildren. The news often came as a telegram beginning with: “We deeply regret to inform you…” The ones that did come home were never the same, haunted by the memories of war. It was a time of heart break on an in-imaginable scale. When I think of all the great gifts, they have given me, I am moved to deep gratitude. We can never let our freedoms be lost, when those that have gone before us have paid such a great price. May we all have the courage to stand against tyranny when it rears its ugly head, and opens its sneaky evil mouth filled with propaganda, lies and deceit. May we always be able to say to tyranny, …Never again. “God keep our land glorious and free.” “Canada, we stand on guard for thee.”

Poppy seeds are a source of fiber and high in both oleic and linoleic acid, with help lower bad cholesterol. They also contain many B vitamins and are excellent source of minerals such as calcium, copper, iron, magnesium, manganese, phosphorus, selenium and zinc. This is a very good cake recipe. Serve and enjoy with gratitude, and when we see all the little poppy seeds, may we be reminded to count our many blessings, be filled with courage for the road ahead and always be ready to fight the good fight.

For decades stand ar d p r o c e d u r e s during surgery have been rarely challenged, with a general consensus that the “best” way to perform an openheart surgery had been found. Many professionals believed that the safest way to perform heart surgery was to open the ribs and expose the heart through a large incision on the chest, and to their credit, they had found a remarkable technique that resulted in consistently successful surgeries. However, the healing process for a surgery like that is quite slow and painful. Whenever bones are broken it will take months for a full recovery, and with many patients, they never fully recover to the point where they have no pain at all.

The Future Of Surgery

The Da Vinci surgical robot is the solution to almost all of the last generations’ surgical problems. This robot allows surgeons to delicately perform tasks with enhanced precision while also showing on a screen what is seen through microscopic cameras on the tips of the robot’s arms. By allowing a surgeon to use controls not unlike what could be seen in a video game, they are able to control a series of robotic arms no larger than a pinky finger. The intentional movements of the surgeon are mimicked perfectly by the robotic arms while tremors of the hand are filtered out through a 6hz motion filter.

The small scale of the robot’s appendages allows for new non-invasive surgeries to be performed. For heart surgeries rather than creating a large pen-length incision in the centre of a patient’s chest, surgeons can create three tiny incisions just large enough to allow the robot’s

arms through. These incisions are placed deliberately so that the robot can sneak in between the ribs and make it possible to avoid breaking the rib cage. By using this new method patients will have their open wounds close up on their own and heal in about three days.

Although this is already incredible this robot will have much more impact on the medical world than just enhancing surgeons. The Da Vinci robot is capable of performing some tasks autonomously.

What does this mean? Well, the robot can, without a human operator, perform certain surgical tasks. The Da Vinci Robot can already perform hair transplants and remove cancerous tumours in certain cases. Although the autonomous capabilities have not yet been approved for all use cases. The question is, will people really be able to trust a machine to perform surgery on them? Many already

Soon the black and white bovine was suspended from the rafters of its sturdy plastic barn. It swung to and fro, a pleased smile of contentment plastered on its solid face.

Perhaps, in the end, the question is not, “Have you ever seen an elephant fly” but rather “Have you ever seen a Holstein hung?”

Being A Military Family In The 21st Century

My wife and I have been together for 15 years and in that time, we have raised a blended family, survived 4 tours and one IR posting (imposed restriction means that we live apart in different provinces) for 3 years. All of our time together has been directed by the military.

Serving one’s country is never easy but all too often those family members who stay behind and run the home are overlooked. One parent has to step up and run the home and pilot the family throughout the absence of the serving member.

In my own time in the service (30 years and counting), I have seen many changes when it comes to communication - including what is and is not allowed. My first time in Afghanistan had me waiting for parcels and letters to arrive. On my second tour to Afghanistan, we had a satellite phone with a fancy code we had to very carefully punch in because one wrong number would lock

us out. The phone would then have to be reset by the signal platoon (yes... I know this because I screwed it up and locked us out of the phone). Following that, we had access to email in order to communicate with family back home. With the latest advancements, we have the internet and smartphones to keep in touch in real time.

I will agree that communicating with loved ones has become way easier, convenient and allows real-time conversations. That being said, there is a cost and a caution to real-time communication. There is no longer a “cooling off or thinking period” from being upset with what is going on in the world or just being lonely and missing your family. There are less filters which can lead to hurt feelings during an extended absence. There is also a caution that with access to various platforms and social media security can be breached. If used correctly, the benefits of today’s meth-

ods of communication far out-weigh the negatives.

We have two children currently serving in CAF; our son posted in New Brunswick and daughter posted in Wainwright. We have a weekly Sunday “fam-jam” which is a group google duo (FaceTime) call so we can see each other while we catch up with how everybody’s week went. This method of communication was able to keep us together while I was on Tour in Latvia and Poland (even during a Pandemic). I do believe this form of communication has helped maintain our mental health and relationships.

3 Ways To Support Canada’s Veterans Year-Round

On Remembrance Day, Canadians across the country commemorate the brave men and women who died in the line of duty as well as those who currently serve in the Armed Forces.

However, your recognition doesn’t have to be limited to November 11. Here are three ways you can support Canadian veterans year-round.

1. Donate to a reputable charity There are a number of charities, including the Poppy Fund, VETS Canada and Wounded Warriors Canada, doing critical work to empower and support veterans from coast to coast. Donating even a small amount to a reputable organization can help improve the circumstances of those who risked their lives for their country.

2. Volunteer at a Royal Canadian Legion There are more than 1,300 Legion branches across the country. As Canada’s largest veteran service organization, the Royal Canadian Legion (RCL) offers outreach and assistance programs for veterans and their families as well as community services and support. Volunteering at your local Legion branch is a great way to make a real difference in the lives of those who served.

Canadian Women’s Army Corps. (CWAC) 1941 to 1946

The Canadian Women’s Army Corps (CWAC) being established during the Second World War is a significant point in Canada’s military history.

Canada was called to war as a British Colony in September of 1939, and shortly thereafter Canadian women organized and ran dozens of unofficial corps across the country. In the west and Ontario, the Canadian Auxiliary Territorial Service, joined the Women’s Volunteer Reserve Corps in Québec, Ontario and the Maritimes. These courageous women learned military related skills like Morse code, map reading as well as infantry drills and physical conditioning.

Many women in Canada were eager to sign up and contribute to the war effort, they believed that the Second World War was a war that required support from every citizen, not just men. They lobbied Ottawa relentlessly to form an official women’s auxiliary in the Canadian Armed Forces. Using Britain’s enlisted women as a worthy example they demonstrated the vital roles that women played in the Canadian Armed Forces.

The fight against centuries old military stereotypes was aided by a shortage of men able to be sent to the front, and the perspective that women could replace men in non-combat duties, thereby freeing up soldiers, helped change Ottawa’s mind.

Supporting the British Empire’s troops was not a new venture for Canada’s women; they had served as nurses in the Northwest Rebellion (1885), the South African War (1899-1902) and the First World War (1914-1918). On 13 August 1941, the government formally authorized the creation of the Canadian Women’s Army Corps (CWAC) enlisting several thousand women who had been volunteering, to be paid in supporting roles for the Canadian Armed Forces. It was not until March 13, 1942 that the military authorities integrated the Canadian Women’s Army Corps into the Canadian Army. In doing that, the Corps began

using army rank structures and insignia.

Elizabeth Smellie, formerly Matronin-Chief of Canada’s Nursing Sisters, and an experienced military administrator, was the first Officer Administering, CWAC. Lieutenant-Colonel Joan Kennedy succeeded Smellie in the fall of 1942 with the new title of Director, CWAC. In May 1943 National Defence Headquarters (NDHQ) replaced the position of Director with two separate positions: Kennedy became the General Staff Officer in charge of CWAC training and Lieutenant-Colonel Margaret Eaton, of the well-known Canadian family, served as Assistant Adjutant-General, CWAC. In April 1944, Ottawa returned to a single leadership position for the CWAC and Eaton, a 31-year-old acting colonel, assumed command as Director General until October of 1945.

Women signed up for the corps for several reasons. Patriotism was one, a sense of adventure another and in some cases, like infantry men, because their friends were signing up too. A advertisement in the Edmonton Journal in February of 1943 noted that prospective recruits had to be in excellent health, at least five feet tall and 105 pounds (or within 10 pounds above or below the standard of weight laid down in medical tables for different heights), with no dependants, a minimum of Grade 8 education, aged 18 to 45, and a British subject, which Canadians were already.

Many of the tasks assigned to women’s corp members paralleled women’s gender-specific employment in civilian or domestic life. Service in the CWAC did allow uniformed women in the corps to learn skills and acquire training unusual for women at that time. These skills included ciphering and decoding, vehicle maintenance, and signalling.

CWACs engaged in range-finding and spotting duties for anti-aircraft units stationed in Canada. Most however held military versions of office jobs.

Basic training was in Kitchener, Ontario or here in Vermilion at the temporarily closed Vermilion Agricultural College.

Advanced officer training took place at Ste-Anne-de-Bellevue, Québec.

Many women in the CWAC were very proud to be serving, and felt they became more self-confident and believed that military life exerted a positive effect on their health and moral outlook. The post war employment potential with their newly learnt skills was also very enticing.

Still, it was not all positive though, even when replacing men and often doing the same work as men, they were not receiving equal pay or dependants’ benefits. A CWAC private received just two-thirds of a soldier’s wage for similar work (about 90 cents a day versus $1.30). In 1943 this proportion was raised to 80 percent. The salary issue was handled fairly according to CWAC leadership as CWACs did not have to stand on guard duty nor be exposed to the training or operational hazards which many male soldiers faced on a daily basis.

CWACs did serve outside Canada, some in Washington D.C. and some were sent to Britain in 1942. Eventually, three CWAC companies were in London,

a handful of CWACs in Laundry and one company in Aldershot, England. The utility and professionalism shown by CWAC members exceeded the expectations of many of their male colleagues.

In all, approximately 3000 served Canada overseas. The first members of the Canadian Women’s Army Corps to enter a theatre of war, were four who were part of the Canadian Army show which landed in Italy in May of 1944. In the months following the Allied victory, Hundreds of CWACs assisted in Europe on repatriating the army to Canada after the Allies won the war.

In August 1946, the powers that be announced that women’s services were no longer necessary in peacetime and disbanded the Canadian Women’s Army Corps effective September 30, 1946.

They also stood down the women’s services in the Air Force and Navy. At the end of the war, there were 636 officers and 13,326 members of all ranks in the Women’s Service. In all, 21,624 women served in the Women’s Corp during the six-year duration of the war.

Dear Editor, As we approach Remembrance Day, I’d like to pay tribute to the veteran members of The War Amps.

The War Amps was star ted by amputee veterans returning from the First World War to help each other adapt to their new reality as amputees. They then welcomed amputee veterans following the Second World War, sharing all that they had learned.

These founding members then established the Key Tag Ser vice, which is still going strong today, to fund the Association’s many vital programs including The War Amps Child Amputee (CHAMP) Program.

Rookie quarterback Corbiere scored five touchdowns, passed for 2 more and rushed for over 300 yards. Veteran Herzog, who was a league all-star in grade nine, resembled a search and destroy missile on defence. Primary tac k le more than d ozen times, he provided the final smack down hit several more times as well as added muscle in some tackles by committee.

Final score Thursday was 59-6 for the Marauders against the Dray ton Valley Warriors.

That 53-point lead made it easier for the officials to whistle game over with three minutes remaining in the final quarter. A late start – the Warriors arrived after the fans – meant a five minute half time and straight time for the second half.

Offensive success came from determined, per sistent and unrelenting defensive pressure. The Marauders defence stopped the Warriors seven times allowing the offence to take over on downs.

The number 4 figured prominently in that pressure and those tackles led by #44 Herzog and complemented by fellow senior Skylar Dary (#14), and rookies Hunter L’Heureux (#4) and Harley Harms (#40). Also making their presence felt on the opposition were veter an Hunter C o nlin an d ro o k ie Regan Sargeant.

Offensive support allowed Corbiere along with rookies Jonas Atkinson and Kolten Sheppard to gain more than 500 total yards.

The red machine’s first touchdown

demonstrated that prowess on both sides of the ball. The Marauder offence star ted the series on their own 30 following a forced fumble by Herzog.

The three-play drive was capped by a 67-yard scramble when Corbiere escaped a blitz to score. His kicking foot provided the two-point convert.

The Warriors only points followed that kickoff. Quarterback Kade Schwab eventually scored on a four yard rush.

The longest play was a 25-yard pass reception. The convert was low and blocked making the score 8-6 for the Marauders with 2:36 left in the opening quarter.

Vermilion answered with a major of their own featuring a 17-yard passing play to Sheppard and finished with a 14-yard romp into the endzone by Corbiere with just 1.3 seconds left in the first quarter.

Before the half ended, the Marauders scored three more touchdowns.

Sheppard caught the ball at midfield, then slipped by defenders for a 70-yard TD. On their next possession Corbiere turned another broken play into six points from an 80-yard score.

The final TD of the half came with just 3.9 seconds on the clock. Sheppard, on a 2nd and 13 play, evaded sloppy tackling, including escaping a hand on his foot, for a 67-rumble into pay dirt. There wasn’t a convert as a fake kick with a pass from ball holder Herzog to Corbiere wasn’t executed legally. Half time score was 38-6.

Three more major s c ame in the straight-time second half. Two were in the third quarter. The first series started with Herzog fielding the opening kickoff on his own 10 and bringing the ball up to the 31. Atkinson’s pass reception brought the ball to midfield.

Sheppard snagged a quick outlet pass before Corbiere called his own number

twice. He stepped out of bounds on the Warrior 30 after a bootleg down the left sideline. Before most players caught their breath, on the next play he reversed field several times while quick stepping around defenders to find both daylight and the endzone.

Corbiere’s final touchdown came with just 3 8 seconds remaining in the third quarter. Atkinson and Sheppard led the attack on the ground with Corbiere finishing off the drive. Drayton Valley bought the fake right while Corbiere went lef t to the endzone.

Herzog powered into the endzone for a single point convert.

Af ter trading possessions, the Marauders ended the game as the daylight faded. The bench anticipated a razzle dazzle play and fans brought out cell phones. But the play fizzled, and an alert Atkinson fought upfield where he was clotheslined. The 15-yard unnecessary roughness penalty put Vermilion first and goal from the nine.

A flurry of first downs followed two illegal procedure calls against Herzog and two defensive offsides. When the play finally ran without a flag, Herzog was the endzone target of an incomplete pass. On the next play, fellow defender Dary hauled in the ball on the 10 and continued into the endzone.

That score washed away the miserable Monday when the Marauders were on the other end of a lopsided score, a 78-15 loss to the north division leading Millwoods Royals.

Millwoods scored on the opening kickoff, then turned a fumble recovery into another touchdown and had a 12-0 lead with less than two minutes off the clock.

On the ensuing kickoff the Marauders got six back as Herzog returned it for a touchdown following some big blocks up the field. But 12-8 was a close as the Marauders would come.

Part of their struggle was corralling fluttering short kick offs that were difficult to field. The charging Royals were more often successful pouncing on loose balls.

The half ended 48-8 for the Royals and Herzog hobbled by injury on the bench.

War Amps

War Amputee Veterans Started 100-Year Legacy

Of the thousands of Canadian soldiers who were wounded while serving in the First and Second World Wars, many returned home missing limbs. United by a common bond of amputation, these veterans not only served their country during wartime, but they made a difference in the lives of generations of amputees that continues today.

In 1916, on the battlefields at Ypres in Northern Belgium, Sidney Lambert (1887 – 1971), a Lieutenant Colonel and Army Padre, lost his left leg above the knee.

While recovering at a hospital in Toronto, Lambert conceived of the idea of a national association to bring together, support and fight the battles for amputee veterans, today known as The War Amps.

In 1920, he became the first Dominion President of the Association and worked tirelessly to bring veterans issues before the government.

It was these First World War amputee veterans, like Lambert, who welcomed the new contingent of amputee veterans following the Second World War, helping them adapt to their new reality and sharing all that they had learned.

One of these was Neil Conner (1918 – 2012) who served as a navigator with the Royal Canadian Air Force. He was injured when his plane was shot down near Bremen, Germany, resulting in the loss of his right leg below the knee.

Another was Bert Coulson (1921 – 1979) who served with the Canadian Army and lost both of his legs below the knee due to injuries sustained while serving in Emmerich, Germany.

Along with their fellow War Amps

members, these veterans went on to provide support to civilian amputees. Coulson said the best way to help was to “roll up my pant leg and show them we can dance, bowl, hold down a normal job. It’s what you have left that counts.”

The War Amps veteran members established the Key Tag Service, which is

still going strong today, to fund the Association’s many vital programs for amputees across Canada.

Rob Larman, a Director at The War Amps and a leg amputee himself, said Mr. Lambert, Conner and Coulson proved that they would not let their amputation hold them back in all aspects of life.

“Though they considered themselves to be ‘ordinary guys,’ our founding veteran members have left a legacy for generations of amputees that has gone on for 100 years and counting,” said Larman. “On Remembrance Day especially, but also throughout the year, we pay tribute to their sacrifice and service.”

National Senior Safety week is this week and the Canada Safety Council has provided tips on how to help keep the seniors in your life safer at home.

It ’s s ad to k n ow t h at a s e n i or s’ home can become a dangerous place because of the ever- changing status of their aging bodies.

According to Gareth Jones, president and CEO of the Canada Safety C o u n c i l fa l l s ar e t h e n u m b er o n e cause of injur y hospitalizations for seniors over 65 years of age.

“These can happen anywhere, at any time. Home is meant to be a safe place, and for seniors a place where they can live safely, comfortably and without fear,” said Jones.

In 2017-18, 137,568 seniors were hospitalized due to injury, with a staggering 81 per cent being due to falls.

Installing grab bars in the bathroom near the toilet and bath will help with stability and should be anchored to the wall. It is also a good idea to ensure handrails are installed along staircases.

are non-slip sur faces. Any where in the dwelling that has slcik surfaces should be altered with a tex ture to help prevent slips, for example, the bottom of bathtubs. Be careful with mats and scatter rugs, if you are using these types of rugs be sure it does not have a slippery backing, it should have a form of rubber backing and the corners taped so tripping is less of a possibility. Inside sneakers are also good to help prevent slips.

Clut ter around the house is also very dangerous and can cause falls.

ping so make sure they are put out of the way from walking areas. Furniture, garbage, piles of clutter can block a pathway that can cause injur y and falls, do routine checks to ensure all pathways are clear.

Lastly, always maintain good lighting. As seniors age, their eyesight is often one of the first things to fade, making it important to ensure there is proper visibility and lighting especially in stairways where depth could b e m i sju d g e d an d c au s e a fa ll. A nightlight in a hallway is another good option.

New Tool Provides Free, Simple Resources To Drive Farm Safety In Alberta

“We really worked hard to design a tool that is easy for Alberta farmers and ranchers to access and use,” says Executive Director Jody Wacowich. “The most compelling thing about the FARMERS CARE course is that it doesn’t require major time or effort commitments from users, but it stands to have a huge impact on the safety of their farmers, the success of their businesses and the morale of their staff.”

The FARMERS CARE course is a component of a larger AgSafe Alberta campaign, which aims to familiarize farmers with the eleven most common types of farm accidents and provide them with easy steps to prevent them. The name “FARMERS CARE” is an acronym representing lifesaving opportunities for farms and ranches(you can view them all on the website listed below).

Dry Wildfire Season Comes To An End

October 31 marked the end of the legislated wildfire season in Alberta and despite the hot summer conditions it was noted that Alberta’s 2021 wildfire season saw less area burned than average.

During the season there were a total of 1,307 wildfires which burned 52,955 hectares or 130,855 acres. This is in comparison to the five-year average of 1,123 wildfires burning 317.326 hectares or 784,129 acres between 2016 and 2020.

Although the wildfire season is coming to a close conditions are still dry and Albertans are encouraged to continue taking caution through the fall and winter months.

VES held our November assembly on November 3, which was also Jersey/Spor tswear Dress up Day. Mrs. Doherty led the assembly by playing the Indigenous version of O Canada and the land acknowledgement from Chief Willie Littlechild, both of which were used during the Oilers hockey game on November 1. She also showed us the turtle island Oiler emblem made by Lance Cardi-

nal and the dance performed by Darrell Brertton Jr. (again, from the Oilers game on November 1). We were informed that VES’s November virtue is perseverance. Because of the closeness to Remembrance Day, we watched a video about why we wear poppies. Mr. Haslehurst went through his Golden Book Picks. He also told us that Theo Visser and Penelope Donily were the AR Readers of the Month.

Parent Teacher Interviews were held on November 3 and 4 from 4:30-7:30 pm. They were held by phone or google meet. Teachers called parents from numbers other than the school number due to a high volume of phone use. Thank you all for making time to meet with your child’s teacher. We know it takes a village to educate children, and when parents are actively involved in the school process, we can see the biggest impact.

The week of November 8-12 is a week of no school for our students. On November 8 and 9, teachers will be attending professional learning sessions.

November 10 and 12 are days in lieu for staff meetings and parent teacher interviews. November 11 is Remembrance Day. We hope you enjoy your week together and have some quality family time.

VES will be having our Scholastic book fair from November 15-29. We will be hosting this as a virtual event. The fundraiser proceeds will go towards new books for our Learning Commons. Scholastic will have complete details for us soon and we will send more information home to families.

Students dressed up for Halloween on Friday, October 29. At the end of the day, students had the chance to participate in classroom activities including pumpkin carving and a scavenger hunt.

Remembrance Day Ceremonies were held on November 5 during our period 3/4 regular instruction block within our individual classrooms. May we take this opportunity to reflect and thank those who have sacrificed their time so we may live the life we enjoy in Canada today. It was also Formal Day to honor our veterans.

Grade 10 and 11 Phys. Ed. Students had the chance to go scuba diving at Lakeland College on Thursday, October 21.

Grade 9 - Take Your Kids to Work Day scheduled for Wednesday, November 3, 2021 has been cancelled for the 2021-2022 school year. Students will work with their teacher to complete some virtual experiences.

On November 16th, we will be handing out our academic student awards for last year. Unfortunately we are not able to celebrate as usual and so cannot invite parents and guests to this celebration. We do plan

Next up is playoffs quarterfinals on Nov. 12th or 13th.
