McDonald’s Now Open

May 25, 2021 crews broke ground for the new McDonald’s restaurant in Vermilion. The restaurant was scheduled to open in late September but due to delays in construction materials the restaurant opening was delayed a couple of days until October 1.

Currently the restaurant is open 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. for Drive-thru. Dine-in hours will be 7 a.m. to 10 p.m., but currently have no sit in dining due to restrictions.

They do have Curbside delivery which star ted on Monday, October 4. The restaurant will be going 24 hours in the Drive-Thru starting Nov 1.

Franchisee James Richer has been a part of the McDonald’s family for over 40 years. Along with his wife Tamara, they currently live in the Vegreville area

and have been McDonald’s Franchisees since 2007. They also operate McDonald’s restaurants in Vegreville, St. Paul, and Wainwright.

James and Tamara look forward to becoming a part of the Vermilion community, building strong relationships and getting involved in local activities.

“I would like to thank Koralta Construction for the superb job in building Vermilion McDonalds. I would also like to thank the Mayor and town planning for allowing Koralta to use the adjacent site to store tools and machinery, it’s very much appreciated,” stated James.

James previously said that they always thought it would be great to have a restaurant in Vermilion and that McDonald’s has been looking at how best they can serve smaller communities, and that Vermilion was the best spot for them.

It was also c ommented that the current new restaurant lo cation is employing approximately 60 individuals.

“The vast majority of our hires are from Vermilion or close surrounding areas. We are definitely hiring both full-time and part-time staff, including assistant managers. We are excited to staff our Vermilion restaurant with enthusiast i c lo c als who love fo o d and engaging with their neighbours,” commented James.

Two Candidates Running For Mayor This Year

At the Municipal election October 18, Vermilion residents will have the opportunity to cast their votes and select who will occupy the Mayor’s chair in council for the next four years. Greg Throndson and Caroline McAuley have both announced their intent to run for Mayor. The Voice sat down and talked to each of them about their plans if elected, and why they think they should be Mayor.

Incumbent Caroline McAuley is very proud of the accomplishments the residents of Vermilion and the Town Council have achieved together in the past four years.

“It has been a hard four years, I admire and applaud the businesses in our community for their perseverance the past two years, and want to thank not only them, but the community for supporting them,” commented McAuley.

McAuley would like to see the council’s goal of community engagement continue and expand in the next term.

“We had started making progress, but then had a difficult time when the pandemic arrived.” said McAuley She feels this is a vitally important component of success. A major goal will be to continue ensuring present important services remain in Vermilion, and advocating for the town with the various branches of the provincial government that municipalities deal with. McAuley says she is very passionate about Vermilion, and would like to continue on as Mayor to help Vermilion to continue to grow and expand. She notes the monumental infrastructure projects that have been realized in the past four years, like the Waste Water Treatment Plant, supported downtown revitalization and expanded recycling services, as well as the aerial fire truck and the attainment of

the Ice Plant, and wants to help Vermilion reach more of those types of goals.

“I’m not going anywhere.” states candidate Greg Throndson, “you won’t find me at 85 retired in Hawaii, Vermilion is where I will be.” Born and raised in the community, Throndson has very strong, deep roots in Vermilion and plans to continue to let those roots grow. He has had direct involvement with many facets of the town, including the trade businesses, the farming community and the small business owners, giving him a “grounded sense of priorities for the town and everyone in it.” If elected, Throndson knows it will be a learning curve for him, he is entering the race with his ‘eyes wide shut’, he believes he will be bringing a positive and less biased perspective to the office.

He does not have a huge grandiose plan for his time in office, the wants and dreams of a community cannot just be the Mayor’s, they are every citizen’s in Throndson’s perspec-

Get To Know The Candidates For This Year’s Municipal Election

October 18 is approaching quickly, and the Voice would like to give people the opportunity to get to know the multitude of people in the area running in this year’s municipal elections. The next issue will introduce the remainder of the Town councilor candidates as well as the School Trustee candidates, and the people running for the County of Vermilion River Council.

Each candidate was asked three questions: What do you want the residents of Vermilion to know about you as they head to the polls on October 18?

Why did you choose to run for Town Council?

If elected, what is something you would like to see accomplished in your four year term?

Kevin Martin wants Vermilion to know he is a community supporter, a strong advocate for volunteering, and was locally born and raised.

“I would like to see Vermilion continue to grow, with both business and families, and enhance our presence in the province for the right reasons,” said Kevin Martin.

He believes there is a need to establish a forecast for Vermilion’s long term future, not just the short term.

“Being on the Vermilion Facility Enhancement Board highlighted the need for continued facility enhancement in our community. We have an excellent community of volunteers, I believe the town can continue to grow working collaboratively with them,” commented Martin.

If elected, Martin would like to work on a new direction for housing in town, whether that be the development of land for new housing, or incentives to improve the aged housing in town.

Candidate Amr Rezk feels that his moderate perspective on social and political issues, and his willingness to listen to all points of views are important traits people should know about him. Coming to Canada as an adult, Rezk was eager to learn more about our community with no prejudgment or bias regarding a certain point of view.

“I am running for council because I witnessed a great deal of polarization which started to divide people in town, and the pandemic made the issue worse. I believe a moderate position and sensible ideas from the council would be beneficial for building a better community and bringing people together,” said Amr Rezk.

Rezk continued, stating, “I hope to be the voice for people in town who otherwise feel they sometimes aren’t heard. I can encourage them to speak up, be active and engage in productive discussions regarding the future of our community.” If elected, Rezk would like to see the council revisit their plans for the establishment of a field house centre in Vermilion, a facility that would provide space for activities all year round.

“I am all about humanitarianism,” states candidate Brad Gallamore, “I will gladly volunteer if there is help needed.

I want to build a stronger community.” He started a local not for profit organization and street team that regularly collects and distributes food, water and clothing to unhoused community members. Gallamore wants townspeople to know he has a big goal of attracting some indigenous based businesses to Vermilion. He feels Vermilion is an inviting community to everyone and can be a town that makes people want to live and invest in, thereby growing the local economy and building a stronger community.

Gallamore decided to run for council after a local incident involving a very sensitive issue occurred and he felt that the town did not actively respond.

“I decided I wanted to be part of the decision making process that could have done something about it,” commented Gallamore.

Incumbent Councilor Justin Thompson feels voters should know he has learnt a great deal in the past four years, particularly the importance of infrastructure in promoting the growth of a community. Returning to town after his post secondary education, Thompson has been presented with many opportunities to be successful in his hometown, and being on council is one way to give back to the community.

“I seek to be able to offer a voice for the younger generation and the marginalized,” commented Thompson.

Justin has a 25 year vision for Vermilion, and is only on year four with the end of this term, so would like to stay on council and continue working on a number of projects he has been fortunate to be a part of.

“The first two years were really about learning and gaining a greater understanding of the role of Town Councils and the strengths and limitations they have. Despite the pandemic, the last two years have seen a number of successes, and I would like to continue with a proactive approachm,” explained Thompson.

If re-elected, Thompson would like to focus on a couple of things, including a long term financial and timeline plan regarding the replacement and maintenance of the existing infrastructure in Vermilion. Also, “I would like to see the town establish a more robust, fully realistic plan to start the construction of a field house and rebuild the beach.”

Kirby Whitlock is “very excited” to be running for Town

Council this year, he wants to make a difference in the community, and feels that being on council will let him do that. He intends to work hard for taxpayers, and wants to contribute to the growth of the community. Whitlock wants residents to know he is here to listen to them and values their input on the subjects that matter to them. A third generation business owner in town, Whitlock enjoys volunteering in the community that he was born and raised in. Like all residents in the community, Whitlock has a personal investment in Vermilion successfully growing and getting stronger. Being on town council seemed the logical step for him to participate in some of the changes that need to happen for continued community growth. If elected, Whitlock would like to establish a stronger voice for the younger residents, plus at the same time attract more of that demographic to the area to stay, establish roots and raise their families. He would also like to look at ways to stabilize taxes, see further development and growth of the two industrial areas that have been started.

Erwin Warkentin wants people to know he values their contributions and insights into town issues, he is very open to learning from others who have maybe more experience and history with things Vermilion has dealt with over the years. He believes that thinking outside of the box is not always the best option, sometimes a practical Vermilion solution could be the best course of action.

“There are some very intelligent people in this community with lots of experience to educate me on things I am still learning about, and I am here to learn,” explained Warkentin.

He says he is very invested in the success of Vermilion, with a new family and his wife being the owner of an established local business, Warkentin is planting roots and wants to contribute to Vermilion’s growth. He wants voters to know he believes in fiscal transparency. An active Rotarian member, Erwin strives to follow Rotary International’s Four Way test in his everyday life, particularly the fourth point of ‘is it beneficial to all concerned?’ when thinking of community issues. Warkentin was encouraged to run for town council by several acquaintances, and found he had an interest in working with council and town administration together after attending several/numerous council meetings and having committee involvement. If elected, he has three areas he would like to focus on. Attraction and retention of services not offered in town, to promote not only staying local to meet the needs of townspeople, but also to attract others to town is something he is focused on. The establishment of a succession framework for local business owners for when they are ready to retire or need to pass their business on, is something he feels would help Vermilion’s continued economic development and stability. Finally, as an aviator, building on the airport’s economic contributions to the town’s growth is vitally important to Warkentin.

The second incumbent councilor eager to stay on to support Vermilion is Robert Pulyk. A Vermilion resident for 22 years, Robert and his wife have raised six children and have well established volunteer roots on many levels in the community. They love living here, and Pulyk recognizes that it is a combination of volunteers, businesses, and all other organizations that make a community.

“It is a community that sets the direction a Town takes.

It’s council’s role to support that direction through a strategic plan, advocating and seeking new economic opportunities,” explained Pulyk.

He says he is running again because he is passionate about the work he has done on council, and wants to see a few of the projects through to successful completion. He states that his experiences advocating for Vermilion have proven invaluable, and he would like to continue doing so for Vermilion’s continued successes. If re-elected, Pulyk will be focusing on several projects, including the broadband initiative (a passion of his), the continued development and enhancement of the town’s airport as an economic contributor the to towns growth, the future development of the North Brennan subdivision in particular inclusion of affordable housing, and focusing on the future recreational needs of the community identified in the Recreational Master Plan. Pulyk believes input/collaboration with the community on deciding the future location(s) and footprint of all of our recreational needs over the next 20 years is crucial in this planning.

C a n d i d a t e H ay w a r d Vaters enjoys meeting new people, and has not met anyone in Vermilion he hasn’t liked. A resident in

Vermilion for seven years, Vaters likes the community and enjoys volunteering for local causes, including being a part of the Lion’s Club. He believes Vermilion is a great place already, and wants to help it get even better. Vaters feels that being a council member, he can help make a difference in the long term. He is hopeful that some of the decisions made in the next four years will have lasting impacts on Vermilion’s successes to come. As a senior in the community, he is hoping to represent that population, and give them some voice in community growth. Seniors have unique perspectives on life, and the specific needs of the older population needs to be included in town development. Vaters states he does not have a real agenda if elected, but would like to further contribute to developments around the Heritage Park, the airport, and local businesses.

It is with great unbelievable sadness, that our Gail was killed in a vehicle accident on Sept 10, 2021 in her 30th year.

Gail will be forever loved by her parents Bernie & Elizabeth Verleysen of Vermilion, Brother Peter Verleysen of Cobourg, Ontario, Partner CJ Best of Vermilion and all of the Davidson families.

Her celebration of life was held at the WLS Stockade Convention Centre, who catered a light lunch.

It’s pumpkin season and pumpkin month, with Thanksgiving right around the corner. Last year I baked nine pies for Thanksgiving, and because of COVID and restrictions, none of the families were able to come. What I learned is that three people can eat nine pumpkin pies. A slice for breakfast, another one for lunch, and then later, another one, just because you walked by the pie. You know how it goes.

I recently helped organize a Pumpkin Fest in downtown Lloyd. It included a Biggest Pumpkin Contest. It turned out that the biggest pumpkin there was 1,200 pounds. It came from Airdrie, Alberta and was grown by Eddy Zaychkowski. The second-biggest pumpkin was 800 pounds, and there also were pumpkins that were 300 pounds and several that were homegrown in local gardens that were well over

100 pounds. That is some serious pumpkin growing. The kids loved climbing on them and having their photos taken by parents.

They were truly amazing to see. Atlantic Giant pumpkins can grow as much as 50 pounds a day, during peak growing season.

While it seems that you could make a lot of pumpkin pies with a giant pumpkin it turns out, that the flesh is watery and bland in flavour, but great fed to livestock. For pies it is better to stick with a smaller, garden type pumpkin.

During the Pumpkin Fest, a local church, the ARC 4 Square, did a pumpkin pie with whipped cream and coffee venue, with gospel music. It was a big hit, and the next day I had a lady in my shop telling me of the most amazing pie she had there, and wondering how she could get the recipe.

She described it as very creamy and so delicious. It turned out that I happened to know the lady that made the pie, and she graciously shared her recipe with me, to share with you. This is the pastor of the church, Lisa Heapes divine Pumpkin Pie

recipe. Pumpkin Pie is the perfect way to finish off any Thanksgiving meal. Pumpkin is high in many nutrients, antioxidants and vitamins, especially beta carotene forms of vitamin A, so feel free to enjoy a nice slice, guilt-free.

Even though we are all going through uncertain times we still have so much to be thankful for. Aside from the great meal with people your care about; which we may or may not be allowed to have this year, the joys of Thanksgiving Day are won by doing the mental work of being thankful.

I am thankful for the farmers that do the work so we can all eat and to God who gives the farmers the rain and sunshine for the crops to grow, and my daily breath of life. I am thankful to wake up in the morning as each day is a gift. I am thankful to have something to do and to be able to do it. I am grateful for kind people in life, as they are truly the cake and the icing. Scientific research shows that the more we focus on what we are grateful for, the happier, healthier and more optimistic we become.

Research studies found that heart patients that scored the highest on gratitude had better quality sleep, less inflammation and sunnier moods. As proverb 17:22 goes “a happy heart is as good as medicine”, being thankful makes us happy, and being happy helps us be healthy. Wishing you a healthy and happy Thanksgiving.

Creamy Pumpkin Pie 1 – 15 ounce can pumpkin puree 1 – 14 ounce can sweetened condensed milk 2 eggs 1/2 teaspoon salt 2 teaspoons pumpkin pie spice 1 pie crust Preheat the oven to 425 degrees.

Combine the pumpkin puree, canned milk, eggs, salt and spice, and blend well. Pour the mixture into the pie shell and bake at 425 degrees for 10 minutes, and then reduce the temperature to 350 degrees, and continue to bake for another 30 - 40 minutes, or until almost set in the center.

Chill and serve with whipped cream.

The Belgian Land Syndicate Sells Its Land

In January of 1910, Vermilion was only a few years old, but things were already starting to change in

the area.

That month, on Jan. 22 specifically, the Belgian Land Syndicate, which owned 50,000 acres of land in the Vermilion area, announced that it had sold its holdings to several English capitalists.

The English capitalists had the plan to locate a colony of experienced English and Scottish farmers on the land. Over the previous two years, the land around

Vermilion had been bought up by a growing number of Americans who had migrated to Canada looking for a better life. With hundreds of settlers pouring into the area on a yearly basis, the new owners of the land wanted to take advantage of this and gain some money in the process. Land was described as having a demand that was greater than the supply, which was why the new owners wanted to bring in English and Scottish settlers on land that was previously unavailable to them.

At the time, Vermilion was described as a new town that was going to be a thriving city at no distant date and that it was the main marketing centre for the entire district thanks to holding a stra-

major impact on the district. With all that land bought, a large number of settlers from the British Isles would come to the Vermilion, where their families still live to this day. In the process they altered the entire cultural fabric of the growing community and helped make Vermilion what it is to this day.

Ring is a home security company that for years has been modernizing the home security business. Ring was the fir st c ompany to create a video doorbell, a doorbell lock hybrid that would replace the handle of your home’s door. They created a product that would allow people to be notified when someone is at their door.

Not only that but by just checking the Ring app you can see who’s on your doorstep and unlock the door if they are friends or family. Ring recently announced its next product for home security, a security drone.

The Ring security drone also known as “The Always Home Cam” is a small indoor only quadcopter with a friendly design aesthetic. When not in use the drone nests itself flush in its charging dock allowing for it to subtly camouflage as a decor piece. The Ring home

security drone is capable of navigating its environment automatically, including lifting itself out of its charging bay and moving to where there may be an intruder. Though it can only navigate on a single stor y at this time, Nest plans to expand this functionality to allow it to go up and downstairs in the future. However even in its current state it works remarkably well at what it is designed to do.

The Nest home security drone was designed to fix one of the main concerns associated with traditional home security systems, privacy. The security drone offers a solution; by removing the need for many alwayson recording systems in a home, you remove that feeling of being watched.

Museum Treasures: Jack Baddock’s Barber Shop perform card tricks when the opportunity arose. His phone calls to “The Wizard” to confirm which card someone had picked was correct is well remembered, he was of course, always right. Jack passed away fair weekend, July 1989.

One of the museum’s displays is the setup of Jack Baddock’s Barber Shop. From the original pole from outside the shop to the chair that patrons sat in to receive their haircut in, the display takes museum goers back in time to the business that Jack ran for 50 years. Located at 5034-49 Avenue in the Charles E. Henry building, Baddock had his barber shop in the front of the building, his residence in the middle, and a bike repair shop at the rear of the building. Jack and his wife Ann raised four children in the building, which still houses a residence in it today. Open for exactly 50 years, from May 8, 1927 to May 8, 1977 Baddock was slightly ahead of his time, providing scalp massages with “stinky stuff”. More than one customer waited patiently in the chair up front while Jack ran to the back shop to grab someone a bike part. One relative recalls that Jack had at least one devout customer Barber tools of the trade. in Nellie Brass, a local resident who always kept her hair in a shorter cut. a little angel, far too soon. Often this is a time that remembering becomes a lonely journey, as those around are uncomfortable with how to support grieving families. There often is an uncomfortable feeling in recognizing that the infant was part of a family and someone the community never got to know. Those who have suffered such a great loss may feel that they don’t have a right to grieve (disenfranchised) and their grief is turned inward.

This is a time for the community to become aware of those who grieve and “seek to understand” the impact of such a loss for parents and also siblings and grandparents.

For you, the parents, we honour you as you remember the anticipation of being a parent, to now having empty arms. This has become the beginning of an emotional “roller coaster” of; anger, fear, guilt, blame, depression, anxiety and so many more. You have experienced one of life’s greatest losses and you “grieve.” For grandparents you are experiencing a double grief as you grieve with and for your children but also for the grandchild you were to enjoy.

Some thoughts: your grief will take time to work through, it is a journey you must make and hopefully you will have found those who will companion you on the journey.

Suicide Walk Of Remembrance

The regional area came together once again for the 11th year to honour the memory of a loved one who died by suicide.

This event took place at Bud Miller All Season Park in Lloydminster where some 150 people gathered. Mayor Gerald Aalbers and Lloydminster-Vermilion- Wainwright MLA Garth Rowswell, welcomed those who came. Mayor Aalbers said, “We’re here to pay remembrance, and to hopefully help others that may be on the journey, and we will help change that course.”

Maxine Desjarlais opened with prayer and Dylan Hansen and the Roughcuts band provided several appropriate songs for those who gathered. A thank you to Curt Price who helped at the mic to guide the activities.

Special Guest Speaker, Desiree CornnetWile spoke of the bullying that can be fatal and how there needs to be a move to be a “buddy not a bully.” Desiree’s 15 year old son Jayden completed suicide in 2019.

As people began the walk they received a resource bag, a carnation and a small tear cup.

After a reflective walk around the lake snacks were provided and an open mic was available.

A number of people donned hockey jerseys to honour the memory of Chad Crawford, a much loved hockey coach who completed suicide July 20, this year.

Shirley Scott, one of the committee members and founder of Walking Through Grief Society said that this event is organized to allow families to come together to honour the memory of those they loved, who completed suicide. It is not just to honour the memory of a loved one but to promote awareness. Loss by suicide is a big tragedy and needs to be talked about. The stigma needs to be taken away and people need to come together to support each other. Talking is very important, but we all need to become good listeners to those who are crying out and to those who grieve.

Scott is just one of a very active committee who passionately believes in the value of the Walk of Remembrance and how awareness is so important. Other members are Neil and Laurie Harris, Jennifer Gordon, Gloria Fairley, Bernadette Yelland, Chasity Orr, Kara Barnes, and Kelvin Knorr.

Submitted Spring and summer calls for emergency help have returned to normal this fall . Food drives and donatio ns were suf fi c ient to meet our needs and Christina’s Home Furnishings weekly BBQ’s for the month of September really helped to improve our purc hasing p ower. With Fall and Thanksgiving our thoughts have once again turned to the anticipation of colder weather, and our FREE WINTER WEAR including coats, long underwear, sox, hats, mitts, and quite a selection of boots. We have a good supply of all sizes of coats for adults, youths, and children.

All are washed or sanitized. This year we will be located at the Lakeland mall next to the physiotherapist.

We will be open TUESDAY to FRIDAY from 11a.m. to 5p.m. starting OCTOBER 15th. Covid protocol for sanitizer and mandator y masks will be followed. We hope to see you there.

Vermilion Deputy Fire Chief Talks Fire Prevention

This week is Fire Prevention Week, and while every day and every week is important in fire prevention, this week provides a special moment in time for everyone to take a step back from their daily routine and put some emphasis on fire prevention. It is a time to implement escape routes, it is a time to check fire extinguishers and smoke detectors, and it’s a time to check for any fire hazard that may be lurking in your surroundings.

This year’s Fire Prevention Week campaign, “Learn the Sounds of Fire

Safety!” works to educate everyone about the different sounds the smoke and carbon monoxide alarms make.

Knowing what to do when an alarm sounds will keep you and your family safe. When an alarm makes noises – a beeping sound or a chirping sound, you must take action.

Fire Prevention Week is not just a great time to make a plan, it is an excellent time to practice your plan so you can stay calm in case of a fire.

Knowledge and planning is key.

Fire Prevention Week is also a great time to recognize the contributions our local fire department make in our

communities. Firefighters not only put out fires, they are also members of first responders on accident scenes and it is important to allow them to do their jobs.

“Whether on the scene of an accident or a scene of a fire we are there to do our jobs. We are there to hopefully save a life and someone’s property depending on which scene we are called to. That is our focus.

COVID continues to be a unique situation this year that we have to deal with on every call. Safety of the patient is very important as well as the safety of the fire department members.

Lloydminster Fire Department Encourages Everyone To Learn The Sounds Of Fire Safety

Submitted N at i o n a l Fire Preve nt i o n We e k , October 3-9 Lloydminster, AB/SK – The Lloydminster Fire Department is teaming up with the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA)—the official sponsor of Fire Prevention Week for more than 90 years—to promote this year’s Fire Prevention Week campaign, Learn the Sounds of Fire Safety. This year’s c a m p a i g n, O c to b e r 3 - 9, wo r k s to educate ever yone about simple but impor tant actions they can take to keep themselves and those around them safe. “ W h at d o t h e s o u n d s m e a n? I s there a beep or a chirp coming out of your smoke or carbon monoxide alarm? Knowing the difference can save you, your home, and your family,” said Lorraine Carli, vice-president of outreach and advocacy at NFPA. The Lloydminster Fire Department encourages all residents to embrace the 2021 Fire Prevention Week theme.

“It’s important to learn the different sounds of smoke and carbon monoxide alarms. When an alarm makes noise —a beeping sound or a chirp-

ing sound—you must take immediate action,” says Leigh Sawicki, Chief, Lloydminster Fire Department. “Make sure ever yone in the home understands the sounds of the alarms and knows how to respond.”

To learn the sounds of the specific smoke and carbon monoxide alarms within the home, check the manufacturer’s instructions that came in the box, or search the brand and model online.

The fire department wants to share safety tips to help people Learn the Sounds of Fire Safety A continuous set of three loud beeps means smoke or fire. Get out, call 911, and stay out.

A single chirp ever y 30 or 60 seconds means the battery is low and must be changed.

Replace all smoke alarms after 10 years.

Continuous chirping after the battery is replaced means the alarm is at the end of its life, and the unit must be replaced.

▪ Sleep with your mobility device, glasses, and phone close to your bed.

▪ Keep pathways like hallways lit with night lights and free from clutter to make sure everyone can get out safely.

The County of Vermilion River Fire Services consist of 8 fire stations (4 Contractors and 4 County-owned), 1 rescue squad and a dedicated County staff that includes the Director of Protective Services/County Fire Chief and the Protective Services Co-ordinator/Clerk.

As of August 2021, the County Fire Services has responded to 303 calls.

Of these calls, 14 involved structures, 56 were wildfires, 16 vehicle fires, 28 Motor Vehicle Collisions, 71 medical calls and a variety of rescues, specialized responses and even a plane crash and railroad incident.

After every fire, an investigation must be completed to determine the cause and origin of the fire. If deemed suspicious, a full team of investigators are assigned, including from the RCMP. The County Fire Service works alongside our community partners at the RCMP (Vermilion, Kitscoty and Onion Lake Detachments), County Peace Officers, Alberta Health Services EMS, STARS and our dispatchers at EC911 in Wainwright, to provide a high level of service to our ratepayers.

On behalf of the Fire Chiefs, Council, staff and myself, THANK YOU to all of our FIREFIGHTERS. Your commitment to the safety and protection of our communities is a critical component in public safety.

There was a somber tone throughout the halls of St. Jerome’s on Thursday, September 30, 2021. Students and staff took the opportunity to recognize and honour the lost children, the Survivors of residential schools, their families and communities. We began the day with prayer and a Happigram performance from Mrs. Depins grade 4 class. They performed the song “300 Sleeps” written by Jen Whiffin, who was inspired by Phyllis Webstad’s story. Their singing sounded beautiful and the performance ended with students holding up signs reminding us all that “Every Child

Matters!” Students throughout the school read stories, watched testimonials from survivors, and wore orange shirts symbolizing our solidarity and support.

It was a beautiful sunny day to mark our first walk to church. Students from grades 1-12 attended Mass in two groups, with the older students attending in the morning and the younger ones in the afternoon. For our Grade 1 and 2 students this marks the first time we have been able to attend Mass, due to covid restrictions last year. Father Joy masterfully capitalized on this division of age groups, adjusting his Homily to engage all students at an appropriate age level. September 30 was the perfect day for our school to come together in prayer, faith, and nourishment of the soul.

Students in St. Jerome’s Cross-Country Running Club gave it their all competing at the Runnin’ Riverdale event on September 24.

Our cross-country running team, grades 6-12, have been training hard to compete in various races over the past few weeks.

We had 19 runners from grades 6-12 compete at the Runnin’ Riverdale event on Friday, Sept 24. It was a beautiful day and the students put forth full effort in their run and cheered each other on. We had a number of students place in their age category including: Grade 6 girls Taylor Farkash 4th, and Brittin Willis 5th, Grade 8 boys Simon Dary 2nd and Dane Willis 5th, Grade 8 Girls Keyonna Zacharias 6th, and Grade 10 girls Jaden Nowosade 3rd and Tayla Zacharias 5th. Congratulations to all of our runners and a HUGE thank you to

their dedicated coaches Mrs. Zacharias, Kaylan Zorn, and Nadine Farkash.

We would like to say a heartfelt thank you to Mrs. Yvonne Hynek for her generous donation to our school’s “Feed the Hungry” program that provides healthy food and snacks to students in need. We had various sessions during the day that were grade appropriate, including a virtual tour of Head Smashed In Buffalo Jump, learning about the Cree animal alphabet, and Indigenous games and stories. Kohkum Helen John wrapped up the day by talking about her life experiences as a Residential School survivor.

We are so grateful to the organizers for

making this day such a success.

Ever y Friday morning, we have a Google Meet with all of our Very Important People at VES. This is our time to “see” each other, share activities being done in classrooms, and participate in an activity or game together. Lastly, and probably most importantly, we crank up our “Try a Little Kindness” song. If you listen to it, it will be stuck in your head, too.

Mr. Kobi Neureuter will be joining VES for a nine week student practicum in Grade 1B with Mrs. McLaughlin. He will

begin on October 4. We welcome him to our school and send him our best wishes as he works to become a teacher. We also have Miss Allecia McDonald coming to our school to complete a 30 hour observation practicum with Mr. Harvey in Grade 4. Best wishes to her as well.

October 3-9 is National Newspaper Week. All of our staff and students would like to thank The Voice for all they do for our school.

You have helped us by promoting our school and its programs, and for that we are very grateful. Our students also love seeing themselves in the newspaper, so thanks for continuing to share photos of our school and our kids.

VES had 25 students attend the Riverdale Cross Country run on September 24. These students represented our school well and they had a great time.

Big congratulations goes out to Anna Pawlak who placed 5th in the Grade 5 girls category and Mckenna McLachlan who placed 6th in the Grade 6 girls race.

We are so proud of all of our participants.

In 5B Art, they’ve been reviewing the secondary colors with an optical illusion art project. In addition, they’ve been focusing on Digital Citizenship on Fridays through the Common Sense Media site.

Mannville School At-Home Learning

Mannville School in Buf falo Trail Public Schools received notification of their first positive COVID-19 case on Saturday, September 26, 2021.

The principal, Kim DeFord, knew that it was important to be transparent with her staff and parents and sent a letter to notify her school families about the positive case in the school. Buffalo Trail Public Schools relies on their parents/guardians to inform schools of symptoms of respiratory illness and positive COVID-19 cases which helps inform their students, staff, and fami-

lies.

Fr o m S a t u r d a y, S e p t e m b e r 2 6 to Thursday, September 3 0, 2021, Mannville School saw a daily increase of COVID cases and also students at home sick. Schools are monitoring daily attendance closely. Mannville School had already moved the Grade 6 and Kindergarten classes to at home learning due to the number of COVID cases in those classrooms. After the n u m b e r o f C OVI D c a s e s r e a c h e d double digits in such a short amount of time, the division worked with Alberta Education to receive approval to move to at- ho me lear ning for t he ent ire

school for two weeks.

R h ae -A n n H o l o i e n, S u p er i nte n dent of Buffalo Trail Public Schools, indicated that “ the move to at home learning is a difficult decision as this impacts students, families and staff; however, we really felt that we needed to minimize the risk of spread and keep students and staf f safe. Our staff are amazing at being flexible and providing learning opportunities when students are at home, but this takes a toll on everyone when students are moved to at-home learning. We are hoping to see the number of COVID cases and people home sick decrease

over the next two weeks, so we are able to return to in person learning at Mannville School.”

Buf falo Trail Public Schools also reports they have had COVID-19 positive people affiliated with the majority of their schools and facilities. They continue to rely on parents or the individual to let their principal and supervisor know so the division is able to be transparent to others who are in the buildings. September has been a challenging month in the division and BTPS thanks all the parents, families, and stakeholders for all of their continued support.

Submitted Bears have a curious, investigative nature, an important trait that helps them find new food sources. This also means that bears can easily become used to human camps, garbage dumps, residential areas, ranches and farms when they learn these locations can provide easy meals.

Once a bear gets used to an area that is also frequented by people, the chances of a bear-human encounter increase.

During the spring and fall, bears are more susceptible to taking advantage of unnatural food sources, such as garbage.

They are either just exiting hibernation, or about to enter it, and the availability of natural food sources are limited.

It is critical that individuals living within close proximity to forested areas and lakes be diligent in ensuring attractants are reduced or eliminated during these times.

on unnatural food sources is a public safety risk because they are easily habituated and may defend the food source.

There are steps you can take to help keep bears out of your backyards: Any possible attractants should be cleaned up and removed as soon as possible, if not immediately, to avoid habituation of bears and other wildlife.

Keep your garbage and recyclable bottles and cans in bear-resistant, airtight containers.

Keep your compost indoors. Outdoor compost attracts bears. Look into using an indoor composter.

Consider installing electric fences to help protect livestock such as chickens, swine and those confined to smaller easy access pens.

Remove bird feeders from your yard in the months when bears are active – usually from the beginning of April until the end of

Clean your barbecues. Scrub your barbecue clean after each use and store it in a bear-resistant building, such as the garage or shed.

Consider removing fruit trees and berryproducing bushes from your property.

Bears are attracted to the fruit and berries.

If you must keep the trees, pick the ripening fruit as early as possible and store them in secure, airtight containers.

Never leave food out for wildlife.

Pet food should never be left outside or stored in areas accessible to bears.

Talk to your neighbours. Let your neighbours know if you’ve seen a bear in the community, and talk to them about being BearSmart at home.
