The Vermilion Public Library and the Vermilion River Watershed Alliance hosted a Wetland Explorers – Buggin’ out Down by the River, for children aged 5-12 on August 14.

Under fairly hot conditions the children had the opportunity to do net dipping for all kinds of water creatures, participate in outdoor activities, and listen to a story about a beaver that learned from his mistakes how not being careful in the environment he lives in can harm the environment. Attendees also had the opportunity to watch a demonstration put on by the North Saskatchewan Watershed Alliance on what a watershed

is and how humans can impact the water that flows into waterways like the Vermilion River. The children in attendance were full of excitement and eagerness to participate in the activities and to learn about the species which thrive in watersheds and to learn about how the water enters the watersheds and how pollution can disrupt and pollute these important waterways.

Sheila Heit, Programs Coordinator for the Vermilion Public Library stated that they partnered with the Vermilion River Watershed Alliance to put together this event.

“The Vermilion River Watershed Alliance organized the experts you see at this program today. Volunteers included:

Sheila Heit (Vermilion Library), Greg Barr and Michelle Gordy (Vermilion River Watershed Alliance), summer students (North Saskatchewan Watershed Alliance) Rick Passek (Government of Alberta, Vermilion Environment & Parks), Chris Elder (County of Vermilion River, ALUS program: Alternative Land Use Services). We combined forces to put on some relevant outside summerfun programming for the children in our community area”, explained Heit.

Heit also expressed her delight in the turnout for the program.

“It’s a fantastic turnout! 18 children came today and around 10 adults as well,” said Heit.

There is one more partner program

scheduled for August 18 called ‘Fur, Feathers, and Fun’ that it is taking place in front of the Heritage Museum. Registration for this program is full.

“Partners for this program are the Vermilion Watershed Alliance, Vermilion Heritage Museum, Metis Nation Region 2, the Vermilion Librar y, and VIBE (thanks for sharing the Heritage Park space with us and starting the outside oven for Bannock-making).

There was also a partner program in July with VRWA called: “A Walk in the Park” that had approximately 25 children in attendance. So, that is a lot of community groups coming together to put programs on for the kids in our community area!” said Heit.

Team Vermilion Ride For Cancer Event

On August 10, Team Vermilion Ride for Cancer held their main fundraiser at the Vermilion Heritage Park.

“This is our main fundraiser and all the guests here this evening is by private invite as we are serving pizza and beer and we had to acquire a special license for the event,” explained Team captain, Darren Bratrud.

Bratrud and his team members worked hard baking pizza that was purchased through Express Pizza for the anticipated 120 guests, of which some were previous donors and others were new faces to the fundraising event. Like last year, the team will be completing their ride in Vermilion on August 28. The fundraiser was a success as the team raised $1,400.

Each team member has their personal

reasons for participating in the ride, but Bratrud has several reasons why he has been completing the ride since 2018 as stated on his ride for cancer webpage.

“I will Ride for this cause! It is near and dear to my heart because of the great and strong people it has taken. Most recently, my friend Murray Westman lost his battle with cancer in a short and intense fight.

From the time he had been diagnosed, he not once had a break, he kept his hopes up for the next test, the next hurdle, and even till the day he died, he did not give up.

In 1995, my brother Dale had a similar type of fight. After a simple tear duct surgery, he was called a few hours later and was told that he needed to be at Cross Cancer Institute Monday morning.

Six months later, we were saying goodbye to him.

In 2000, my Dad lost his battle with

cancer at age 63, he was able to live with cancer for 5 years but wasn’t able to make the all-clear mark which was 5 years.

My Grandpa and my 1st cousin both died too young from Cancer as well. My cousin at 55 years old and Grandpa at 62.

There are way too many people that

I have known throughout my years that have gotten cancer and lost their battles, and there are so many living examples of people who have conquered cancer.”

In a few hours it will be your birthday.

Another one I celebrate in silence as I’ve done in the last 9 years. I may not be able to play the wild crazy jokes or send you 60 plus cards in the mail a day apart, I may not be able to buy you that witch for Halloween or that snowman for Xmas, but if I close my eyes I can still hear the excitement in your voice and see the look in your eyes as you unravel the wrapping paper. I celebrate all these little moments in my mind. Remember the time we bought each other presents and wrapped them and then tried to look surprised when we opened them. I still think about that. A day does not go by that I don’t think of you or speak your name. I have to admit the season holidays are not the same as it used to be , it just doesn’t put that smile on my face like it did when we were together heck shopping isn’t even the same anymore however thanks to COVID we would not be allowed in the Pennington dressing room to pull off the antics that we did in the past. I took a little tour to you stomping ground last year. Had a wonderful visit on the phone with your dad and as usual I had a come back for every comment he made. Dawn and I had a wonderful visit with a tear or two. Had a shot of whiskey with the rest of your family. Would have loved to have stayed all night. You would be over the moon excited with the new addition to the family. He is handsome. You would be so so proud of your family. Your nieces and nephews are all grown up, each of them on their own journeys. Everyone is going forward but I am sure we all can agree. It is not the same without you.

Whether you are the ladybug that appears on the railing or the rain falling gently on our face or the wind breezing through on a bad day or the sun that is shinning so bright to guide us or whether your are just above in clouds looking down on us. Each and every one of us hold a piece of you deep with in our hearts and smile when your name is mentioned. So Ma as you so hated me for calling you that---thanks to Hawaii 1990. I will crack that beer and clam and raise a toast to the greatest chick I know. You will be in spirit with me on your birthday, as you always are. If you see my yorkie crew be sure to tuck them under your wing and share that last piece of donut with them as you did in the past. Happy Birthday Brenda…aka Ma

On the second evening of the Bonnyville Chuckwagon Championship 4-time World Chuckwagon Champion Kurt Bensmiller driving the Versatile Energy Services Ltd outfit won the number one spot after a run of 1:17.02 and Bensmiller’s second wagon placed third.

According to WPCA on Championship Sunday Kurt Bensmiller’s Reita Creek Scoreboards wagon, which was piloted by his brother Chance Bensmiller,

along with outriders Rory Gervais and Hayden Motowylo, won the $25,000 Championship Final heat and the 2021 Bonnyville Chuckwagon Championship.

An average train moves at about 100 km/h although capable of reaching higher speeds of around 300km. This although faster than what is legal with a personal vehicle, is still not exceptional compared to other options like planes that travel at 800-1000 km/h. For most of the historical relevancy of trains, they have never been able to go fast enough to compete directly with air travel. However, one key technology that is slowly making its way to the west could change that.

Maglev trains are capable of over doubling what a current locomotive is capable of achieving. This is because of one major advancement in how Maglev trains operate; they hover in the air. Now I know what you are thinking, trains don’t fly, and I understand why this probably sounds like a feature in a sci-fi film.

However I assure you it is very real, and I’ll do my best to explain how it works.

magnets, something many people have played with as a kid and using them in a way that is much more extreme. These trains abuse the simple fact that magnets either attract or repel each other depending on which side they are facing. Different sides attract (ex. North/South) same sides repel (ex. North/North). These trains harness the power of very large magnets to lift the train off of the track and allow it to hover in place. Furthermore, they use a special electromagnetic rail on the outside of the train as a sort of propulsion device. By swapping the electrical current flow direction in each magnet along the track in an alternating pattern they can create a forward or backward force on the train. This is possible because as many people say, opposites attract. So, as the train moves along the track the magnet along the rail just in front of the train’s own internal magnet will be switched to the pole that would pull the train forward and the one behind will switch to push it. By changing the frequency of these switches train operators can control the speed of the train both accelerating it and causing it to slow or stop if desired. However, this

still leaves one question, what stops the train from going off the tracks on sharp turns if it isn’t connected to anything? The answer is simpler than you may expect.

The aforementioned magnetic rails are not just for propulsion, they also stop the train from swaying back and forth. If the train starts to get too close to either side of the track the magnets will simply push it back in place naturally as the force increases relative to the distance from the magnet. This means that there is no friction acting on the train from contact with the wheels to the ground, only air resistance. That is how these trains are able to go at a much quicker speed than regular trains.

Honestly, these trains aren’t the newest technology available. Although, they are new to the western hemisphere. Both the United States and Canada have plans to build these trains in the near future. There are even plans to build a Maglev between Edmonton and Calgary, a trip that would normally take about 3 hours cut down a mere 30 minutes. Unfortunately, this project has not begun yet and is estimated to take about a decade to complete once

started. So, we won’t be riding these super trains anytime soon.

Stabilize Live Music Grant Is Sound Money

Submitted Grants up to $1,500 are still up for grabs for musicians and other live music professionals. Launched on May 14, the Alberta government provided $2-million to Alberta Music to manage the Stabilize Live Music Grant. Two streams in the grant program are supporting the live music industry adapt and relaunch following the devastating impact of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The Individual Micro-grant stream supports live music professionals with innovative content creation, education,

promotion, and management projects.

“Music is an economic driver as well as a balm for the soul,” says Ron Orr, Minister of Culture. “The live music industry is an important part of Alberta’s economic recovery and rebuilding community spirit after trying times. We need to protect and support musicians, producers, managers, promoters, and other live music industry professionals in Alberta, because there wouldn’t be an industry without them.”

An independent panel is evaluating applications based on artistic merit,

project scope, benefit to the community, and creativity. A successful project could be funds to promote a socially distanced event, or to livestream a concert, or even new mics for a recording studio. Content creation, business expenses, professional development, and professional artist fees are also eligible for funding. You just need to show how the funds will help the live music industry in Alberta.

Due to overwhelming demand, the second grant stream is now closed. The

Music Business Innovation grant is helping for-profit venues and other music industry business get back to staging live concerts, and in turn, it’s protecting and creating jobs for artists and other art professionals in Alberta.

The individual grant for music professionals is open until August 31, 2021, or until all funds are claimed. So apply now for an individual Stabilize Live Music Grant before the money is gone.

Morton Water Wells Demolition On July 7, tones dropped for the Vermilion Fire Department to respond to an industrial structure fire on Railway Avenue at 5211 45 Ave #1. The structure involved was Morton Waterwell Drilling and on August 10 the owners of the business had begun cleanup and demolition with the assistance of Snelgrove Construction Ltd. The Owners commented that the fire was of an accidental nature and are planning to rebuild in the future. Snelgrove Construction Ltd. demolishing the burnt-out remains of the building. Wow, harvest came up fast this year. As I write this the sky is smoky, and my eyes are burning. I have been busy making saskatoon pies, and I have discovered that there is a different recipe needed for making a saskatoon pie with fresh berries, than with frozen berries. Using the same recipe, the pie made of fresh berries was much drier. This recipe is for use with frozen Saskatoon berries, and makes a delicious and juicy pie. You can

use premade crusts or made your pie crust from scratch.

The word Saskatoon is derived from the Cree word, mis-sask-qua-too-mina meaning many branched tree. Saskatoons have been used for hundreds of years by the native people of the prairies for medicine, food and specifically pemmican.

Saskatoons are full of beneficial antioxidants, vitamins and minerals. They are a good source of calcium, magnesium and fiber, but their greatest benefit is in the anthocyanins that make Saskatoons their bluish-purple color. Anthocyanins are not a vitamin or mineral, but rather a flavanol

that is highly protective as an anti-inflammatory antioxidant. Saskatoons have twice as many antioxidants as blueberries, and their own unique flavour. They truly are a prairie treasure.

Saskatoon Pie 4 cups of frozen saskatoon berries 2 1/2 tablespoons cornstarch 1/3 cup sugar Stir the cornstarch into the berries to coat them. Pour the berries into the bottom pie crust. Sprinkle the berries evenly with the sugar. Wet the edge of the bottom crust, and add the top crust.

Pinch around the edges to seal. Bake at 425 degree for 15 minutes, and then at

350 degree for 50 minutes.

Plain Pastry Crust for double crust 1 1/2 cups flour 1/2 cup lard (not shortening) 1/2 teaspoon salt 3-4 tablespoons iced water Put the lard and the flour into a bowl, cut or flake the lard using a knife, or a fork, or your fingers or a pastry blender to work the lard and the flour together. Add 3 tablespoons of the iced water into the flour mixture and gently mix until moistened. Once the water is added do not over mix or your pastry will be tough.

Divide the mixture into two balls and roll each ball of pastry out to fit a 9” pie pan.

Lumber Prices Better, But Not Everything Is Back To Normal

L i ke m a ny b u s i n e s s e s t h at a r e “open for business”, Rona is one of many local retailers looking forward to getting back on track after the financial constraints of the past 18 months.

While some costs of construction have dropped in recent weeks, not everything in the industry is back to what is considered the average norm. On August 11, Natural Resources Canada’s benchmark pricing index lists 2x4 eastern spruce-pine-fir (Canadian dollars) with a market value of $670/1000 board feet, down from $685 on July 30, and at almost half the cost of the 52 week average of $1233. OSB board, a hot commodity during the home renovation trend of 2020 is down to roughly $32/sheet, not back to preCOVID prices, but getting closer. Not all materials have taken significant changes just yet, some products, like treated lumber used for building decks will most likely not show big changes for roughly another six months, due to

the cost of treating the wood at time of production. Next spring will most likely be the soonest a substantial price change happens in those materials.

Rona store owner Patrick Willis and his team recently made the decision to “follow the market and help stimulate some local projects to proceed.” This has allowed the store to lower the prices of some of the raw material stock they have in store and a few local projects to get back to work. Willis stated that some materials are still costly however, and in high demand, so can be hard to obtain. Many metal and steel products such as siding for aluminum buildings, are not only hard to get, but also experiencing multiple cost increases this fiscal year, anywhere from a 10 to 20 per cent per increase. Wait times for some material to be delivered have not changed, and he finds he is shopping around for suppliers more than usual as some of the businesses they dealt with no longer exist due to financial constraints during the pandemic lockdowns.

BTPS staff is excited to welcome our students back to school. We are looking forward to a new school year. We know that 2021-2022 will be amazing!

BTPS wants to assure our families that we are preparing a safe re-entry to school for our staff and students. We will continue with enhanced cleaning throughout the day, we will have sani-

tization stations at our entrances and in our classrooms, and we continue to ask that staff and students stay home when sick.

We have shared these guidelines and a Frequently Asked Questions document with our parents/guardians for returning to school. All Back to School Guidelines and information are posted on our BTPS website. We know from last year that

the guidelines can change throughout the year and we will continue to post all updates to our website.

BTPS thanks our parents/guardians as they play an essential role in keeping our schools safe as they support actions in the home (such as keeping children/students home when sick and accessing testing if symptoms develop) that ultimately keep other students and staff safe. At the current time, we are recommending mask use for students in

Grades 4-12 and for parents and visitors who come into the school. We will have these available at each of our entrances for convenience.

We are expecting updated guidelines from Alberta Education before school starts. BTPS will continue to share information and updates when they are available. You can find all of our communications on our BTPS website.

County Of Protective Services July Update

The County of Protective Services once again had a busy month with wildfire/structure fires, medical calls, and motor vehicle collisions. In the numbers reflected some calls within the Town of Vermilion, Villages of Kitscoty, Marwayne and Paradise Valley are not included. An example of such would have been the commercial/industrial fire in Vermilion. According to County of Vermilion River Fire responded to 55 calls for service in July.

They responded to one structure fire, nine wildland fires, two vehicle fires. One gas-electrical/hazmat, four alarms, 16 medical, five mutual aid requests- CVR, one regional assistance, three provincial assistance, three public assistance and four motor vehicle collisions, one rescue and five fire investigations.

July 3 and 4 there were two fire calls, the first was for an outside fire found in a small field and some hay bales in which Marwayne Fire and Rescue responded and the second was for a motor vehicle collision on Dewberry Highway #45 for a multi-vehicle collision in which Dewberry Fire and Rescue as well as, Clandonald fire responded. RCMP and EMS were also dispatched, with only minor injuries reported. During the same weekend, firefighters were on stand-by for the Dewberry Chuckwagon events.

During July 7 – 11 Vermilion Fire responded to an industrial fire in Vermilion at Morton Waterwell Drilling. Clandonald Fire and Dewberry Fire and Rescue responded to an outside field fire due to sparking hydro wires. Crews worked quickly to knock down the head and flanks of the fire and mopped up any hot spots. The fire straddled a Ducks Unlimited parcel so extra care was taken to prevent the fire from extending into the marshes. Growing For Stars

Growing for STARS is an initiative star ted by local farmers to donate money generated from cro ps they har vest to help fund the Star s Air A m b u l a n c e s er v i c e. R e c e nt l y t h e Derwent Fire Department has decided to carry on this service and plant their own crop. They stated that they will donate all of the proceeds from their cro p to the STARS air am bulan c e ser vice. The Der went Fire Depar tment is asking the community for help in collecting donations for this cause.

Anyone who donates before August 31st will have their name recognized with signage at the site of the field. For those who miss the deadline, they will continue taking donations after August 31st with all donators receiving credit on their social media pages. There are 4 tier levels for donations 1/4 Acre, Silver, Gold, and Platinum all getting their own space on the trailer to show proper appreciation.

Originally founded in the 1940s the Der went Fire Depar tment has been serving the Hamlet of Derwent and the surrounding area for almost 80 years.

In the early days, the Department had a water cart that was pulled to fires in town. Then, in the 1950s Derwent got its first Fire Hydrants. “The fire department has gone through many changes over the years and is currently the largest fire department in the County of Two Hills with 26 active members on its roster. The longest-serving member has been in the department since 1981, and there are 12 members with 10 or more years of service,” said Ed Mailhot of the Derwent Fire Department.

According to Mailhot the department and its members have done several fundraisers to support the community over the years.

“ This year we have taken on the task of raising money for STARS. We have planted 21 acres of canola along highway 45 on the northeast corner of Derwent. We will also be asking for additional donations for the #growingforSTARS program (as listed in the poster). The deadline to get your name on the trailer is August 31st, however, we will be accepting donations right up to October 31st. All proceeds will be donated directly to the STARS Air Photos submitted ambulance,” explained Mailhot.

Jolan Wong Heading To Paralympics Wong has been on the national team for 13 years and has competed in one previous Paralympic Games in Rio, two world championships in the USA and Netherlands as well as two Para Pan American Games (Toronto – Bronze medal, Lima – Bronze) and numerous other tournaments around the world.

Wong also went on to explain that the Paralympics are a gateway to equality and said, “When I lost my leg I didn’t know the Paralympics existed, or that there were adaptive sports for that matter. Parasport in any form provides sport on a level playing field where everyBODY can play. The Paralympics are a time for all athletes, regardless of their physical impairment to show the world how capable we are, and how we can chase and accomplish our dreams by overcoming adversity. The Paralympics are a time to show off our incredible talents that may be overlooked because our body isn’t the “ideal” body type presented in the media and society. My hope is that the

generations to follow will know all humans are equal and capable; that having a prosthetic is just a simple difference between your body and mine.”

Throughout the pandemic Wong was able to train at her home in her home gym for her off court training and had access to a local gymnastics facility where her coach made her a makeshift court.

“I really bought into making the best of every opportunity to train, regardless what it looks like. We have been able to run a total of eight training camps in the last 18 months and compete only once in preparations for the games,” explained Wong.

When Wong is not training and competing, she helps her husband run Two Hawks Brewing Co. in Pembroke, Ontario and homeschools her two children which are 11 and 8 yearsold. She also spends

“Tokyo will be my 2nd Paralympic Games where I’m embracing a different role as a back row specialist, the libero. The Canadian Women’s Sitting Volleyball team qualified for Tokyo at the Last Chance Qualifier in Halifax in February 2020 where the team went undefeated to take home gold and earn a berth to the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games.

Our final roster was announced through the Canadian Paralympic Committee on July 22nd. We don’t have a large athlete pool, so we had anticipated who would be representing Canada, but seeing my name on the announcement made me so proud - I’ve been working towards this goal since we came home from our last Paralympics in Rio 5 years ago. And for it to finally be here and knowing how much I’ve committed to this is really gratifying,” said Wong. She also went on to say that they will have some very tough competition, “With world leaders USA, China, and Brazil in the mix it will be competitive, but we are currently ranked number 5 in the world,” stated Wong.

Wong’s athletic career began in her childhood years as she was an avid soccer player who played competitively until she was 12 years old. She was diagnosed with Osteogenic Sarcoma (bone cancer) which resulted in the amputation of her right leg, but that did not deter her from reaching her dreams.

“I didn’t think I would be able to achieve my goal of playing for Canada, but when I was 18 my high school volleyball coach, Gord McNeill, reached out to volleyball Canada to see if there was a program for athletes with a physical impairment. Sitting volleyball was just in its grassroots at the time, and I’ve been with the National team Canadian Women’s Sitting Volleyball team member Jolan Wong. program ever since!” explained Wong.

Municipalities Association And National Police Federation Call For Transparency From The UCP

The UCP government is being called out by both the Alberta Urban Municipalities Association (AUMA) and the National Police Federation (NPF) in regards to their actions around establishing a Provincial Police force in Alberta. One of the recommendations in the Fair Deal Panel Report released last spring, the provincial government hired PriceWaterhouseCoopers to conduct an $2 million independent assessment into the feasibility of creating an Alberta exclusive police force. The intent of the study was to allow the government to make an informed decision as to whether a dedicated provincial police service is in the best interests of Albertans. The study was to consider operational requirements,

processes and potential costs for creating a provincial police service. It was set to be released to the province on April 30, 2021.

No date as of yet has been set to release it publicly.

In a series of town hall meetings held at the end of July, Minister of Justice Kaycee Madu stated that the opportunity for communities to not only express their concerns regarding crime in the communities, but to also “discuss ongoing work to modernize the Police Act, as well as updating Albertans on the progress of the government’s study on the feasibility of establishing a provincial police service to replace the RCMP in Alberta.” would be the focus of the sessions. AUMA is concerned about the amount of money that will have to come out of taxpayers pockets to cover the cost of a provincial police force, particularly those communities who at present rely solely on the RCMP to take care of their community. They stress that the government’s refusal to release the results of the independent assessment is a failure of the Kenney government on a promise they made in the fall of 2019 to hold a referendum on both this issue and the establishment of an independent pension plan. In a press release on July 29, AUMA reminded Albertans that in mid-June, Minister Madu hinted the report would be released when “it’s time to release the report.” In mid-July, Premier Jason Kenney said the report would be “released at the appropriate time.”

Alberta. On their website they have broken down four key components that they state are crucial factors to consider in the discussion of provincial policing. These components include: the increased cost to taxpayers, with less service provided, risks to community safety, Albertans support the present programs with the RCMP, and the need for transparency, something both AUMA and the NPF claim the UCP are not following through on.

Many municipality councils have written letters to the provincial government stating their concerns and emphasizing their support of the present relationships they have with the RCMP, and in some cases that they would like to see money and time put into strengthening the RCMP presence in the province instead. Both the County of Vermilion River and Town of Vermilion councils have received copies of various municipalities’ letters over the last several months as information sharing. The Voice attempted to contact Minister Madu’s office this week with a few questions regarding the report and the Town Hall meetings, but as of press time, have not received a reply.

Strathcona Vintage Tractor Pull And Show

The Strathcona Vintage Tractor Association (SVTA) is a non-profit organization that was formed in 2005 to provide a club for residents in and around Strathcona Country interested in the preservation of Alberta’s agricultural history.

The Strathcona Vintage Tractor Association is pleased to announce that they will be holding their 15th Annual Vintage Tractor Pull and Show this year after having to cancel the event in 2020 due to COVID. “We started 16 years ago out of Sherwood Park/Ardrossan area and we stick to antique tractors that are 1960 and older, so when we go into pulling competitions 1960 is the newest tractors that can enter into the regular competition. That would mean everything including the 2- cylinder John Deere tractors, the 4-cylinders that John Deere called the new generation became 4 and 6 cylinders so they are too new to be involved in our competition,” explained Bob Beveridge, director of the SVTA. According to Beveridge, the annual event has been extremely popular in the past with years boasting more than 2000 attendees and up to 122 tractors participating throughout the 2-day event.

“For our pull event, we have had up to 122 tractors enter our competition in 2018, and this year we expect 100 tractors and maybe as many as 120, there is a pent up demand for people to go out and do things because nothing has happened for almost 19 months so we have a feeling there will be more than 100 tractors this year. We have drawn competition from as far as southern Alberta, Lashburn, Sask.,

Grand Prairie, Dawson Creek, BC as well as other locations. We are known as the premier western Canadian Tractor Pull event,” stated Beveridge.

Beveridge also commented that they have the safest record of competition in Alberta and that they are quite strict with their rules. He also mentioned that they have an electronic weigh scales within 100 meters of their track and they are certified and that there will be 10 different weight classes.

“Each of the tractors compete based on their weight, so let’s say you have a 2500lb tractor that would be a class where there are six to eight tractors in that class. If you have an 8000lb tractor that weight class might have 14 to 15 tractors and if you have big tractors there could be eight to 10 in that class, so everybody competes within their weight class right up to 14,000lb tractors,” explained Beveridge.

The 2-day event not only showcases vintage tractors, but also provides attendees the opportunity to enter a 50/50 draw each day, go on wagon rides, participate in the silent auction, and the Ladies Lawnmowing Rodeo. Visitors can also watch threshing demonstrations, antique equipment displays, and demonstrations, plus peruse the garage sale and trade show.

Children can enjoy the children’s activity

area and bouncy castle and everyone in the family can enjoy delicious eats at the food trucks, and three tents and grandstand seats are setup.

The event will be held at the Bremner Historic Mansion site located at 53452 Range Road 225 (watch for well-marked

signs) from August 28 to 29 and the tractor pull will start at 10 a.m. on Saturday and 9 a.m. on Sunday with a $5 admission rate per day, and children 14 and under entering for free. For more information, you can contact Leo at 780-6926486 or Mike at 780-467-6973.

Long Ears Days

Participants were ready to take part in the Annual Long Ears Days event on August 14 and 15 put on at the Crosshair Springs Arena. It is under new ownership owned

by Krista and Logan Hunter.

This is the 1st event held at this location which was formally Sage Hills Stables.

Krista said this is the 1st year held in eastern Alberta and the 1st year open for horses as well as donkeys and mules. There were lots of classes with people of all ages winning ribbons and

other events for the children including games and prizes and a silent auction rounded out the event.

Krista went on to say that it was a really good turnout for the 2 day event and, even though it was hot outside, it was cool in the arena.

Participants came from southern and northern Alberta and Saskatchewan.

There were lots of spectators to enjoy the day as well.

Branded also brought out their tack shop so that people could check out their stock.

Some of the many events to participate in were Halter classes, Showmanship, English Pleasure, Driving, and Driving Patterns, a Log Pull, Barrel Racing, Sock Race, Egg and Spoon Race, Trail, West-

ern Pleasure, Obstacle and more including the popular Costume Class. Some of the costumes included a road worker crew, 101 Dalmatians, a horse and rider with wings and more.

Krista would like to thank the one and only Blair Mcnab for mc’ing the event and the volunteers helping out and for registration.
