Regardless of the rain accompanied by some thunder and lightning that hit Vermilion the morning of July 29 (but cleared before the parade began), the Vermilion Parade was still a success.

According to Parade CommitteeChairman Russ Cameron, he estimated that the parade had approximately 90 participants and he was surprised by the number of outof-town entries they had.

“There were entries from Islay, Derwent, Mannville, Marwayne, and Lloyd I believe,” commented Cameron.

Cameron also mentioned with great enthusiasm the appreciation he felt towards Heather MacMillan who helped with the

parade this year.

“Heather MacMillan, who I am calling the co-chairperson of the Parade Committee now needs a lot of recognition for all the hard work she put into organizing the parade with me this year, she was amazing!!” said Cameron. He also said, “the parade was more successful this year than we thought it would be thanks to all of the support from the Town of Vermilion, the Vermilion Ag society, and all the volunteers and participants that made it possible.”

The 2021 Parade results are as follows, Decorated Cars, 1st place was Cutting Edge Hair/ Pink Peony, 2nd place Upper Level Pottery and Art Gallery, and 3rd place went to Vermilion Chrysler. Fourth place was awarded to Harbrook and Paisley, 5th

Burnt Rock Adventure Co., and 6th Agland.

Out Of Town: 1st Something Sweet Coffee & Bakeshop, 2nd Derwent Fire Dept. 3rd Klassen Cattle Equipment Ltd, 4th Islay Fire Dept. and 5th was won by The Shriners.

In the Junior Organization, there were just two entries, and 1st place was shared between Vermilion Vipers Swim Club and Vermilion Skating Club.

Attendees of all ages were seen with smiles and laughter as they watched the parade from the sidelines and following the parade they had the opportunity to enjoy music at an open stage located on Mainstreet as well as hamburgers sold by Christina’s Home Furnishings.

When Vermilion Tried To Save Its School

B a c k i n 19 3 3 , times were tough as The Great Depression was raging across the land. The tough times meant that the Vermilion School of Agriculture was in danger of closing, and that worried many in the district as it was a good employer and brought people to the town.

The school had opened in 1913 and had been a fixture in the area since then.

An idea was spawned by the Vermilion Board of Trade and that was to create a school that would focus on a different type of student. W.H. Scott, the president

of the board, led a delegation that would speak to Premier John Brownlee and two other government officials. The proposal was to create a school for the individuals who were deaf or blind, at the time called a school for the “Deaf, Dumb and Blind” Brownlee would listen to the proposal and stated that it was an interesting one, and that it would be studied carefully. He would agree that the province had a duty to the deaf students and that it had to provide adequate service for them.

The delegation would state that Alberta paid $50,789, or $1 million today, for the education of its blind and deaf children to schools in Winnipeg, Vancouver, Brantford and Montreal during 1931-32 alone.

At the time, there were 65 Albertan

students in these schools, costing $501 per head on average. Scott stated that Alberta could enjoy substantial savings by having its own school, something that Saskatchewan was already looking to do with its own school for the deaf in Saskatoon.

Scott stated that Vermilion was ideal for the school location as the building was already adapted well for vocational as well as farm training. By operating the school on a dual basis, it was possible to keep permanent staff through the year and the overhead cost would be cut down heavily. His proposal was for it to operate five months as a farm school and seven months as a school for the blind and deaf.

The premier then promised that the

proposal would be considered by the government.

Nothing of course came of it, and it is not known how much the province actually considered the proposal. Thankfully, the school would not shut down though and today continues to operate as Lakeland College.

Using Laser Drones To Zap Rain Out Of The Sky

Cloud seeding, though it has been around for over a decade, many people still haven’t heard of it, and for good reason. Cloud seeding is a bit of an obscure science, it has been used by many countries over the last decade to try and control the weather to some extent.

However, at least until recently, hasn’t had much media attention due largely to its lack of success. Cloud seeding technology typically involves releasing chemicals from a plane or hot air balloon into the atmosphere. They do this with asperations to alter weather conditions, either to create more rainfall or reduce it. Many areas in the United States already use this technology regularly, and over the last few years has started showing signs that the technology is improving.

drones was used in an attempt to help soothe the 50-degree Celcius scorching temperatures the area is facing. This technology funded by the UAE (United Arab Emirates) is hoped to offer a solution to the area’s drought problem as well as offer a cleaner alternative to traditional cloud seeding. Achieved not through a mix of chemicals, but rather with drones that can produce an electric shock. By flying up into the atmosphere and targeting clouds, these drones are able to release large electrical bursts into the air to stimulate the water particles, convincing them to condense and create rainfall. Not only does this new method save tremendous amounts of money by cutting out chemicals and by using drones instead of man piloted vehicles, but it is also way more effective at altering the weather. Forecasters estimate that this technology can enhance rainfall by as much as 30% in a clear atmosphere and 15% in a turbid one.

However, this technology is not a perfect solution to the drought for every

Lakeland College Precision Ranching

Last week Dr. Susan Markus was at the Vermilion Lakeland College pastures completing GPS Tags on bulls.

Dr. Markus took on the role of Livestock Research Scientist with Lakeland College in the winter of 2021 after spending 25 years with Alberta agriculture.

She is the lead researcher on the two year project entitled ‘Precision Ranching; Remote Assessment of Bull Activity on Pasture’ which is funded through Results Driven Agriculture Research (RDAR).

grazing land during the breeding season it has lead to cow open rates as high as 15-20 per cent. This is because bulls may not be able to find cows in estrus due to the visually-obstructed terrain or distance they would have to travel.

She also said that when bulls complete breeding soundness evaluations they typically only get semen quality and quantity measured, but does not have their libido (sex drive and mating ability) assessed therefore they don’t know if a bull is a proven breeder until after the breeding season has ended.

“Our project will track bulls through GPS enabled ear tags with accelerometer using Australian technology - CERES ear tags. These tags provide location direct from satellite (no need for towers or other infrastructure to capture data)

and activity levels that we are measuring to collect data to relate to actual breeding events. Not only will the owner know where the herd is and specifically where the bulls are, but our research project intends to also track if bulls are actually mounting and breeding the cows,” commented Dr. Markus.

According to Dr. Markus beef producers spend significant money on superior genetics in their bull battery and this new technology is capable of providing the reassurance that the bulls are siring calves early in the breeding season and that any bulls who are not completing the task can be identified and removed so the cowherd pregnancy rate is maximized.

The cattle were tagged at two locations which was one of Lakeland’s herds and the other with an industry collaborator in late July. “ With the recent launch of the new bachelor of agriculture technology program at Lakeland College, this research project will provide students and industry with a true show and tell opportunity into new remote sensing technologies available for adoption on the ranch,” Markus commented.

New Vaccine Lottery Has Great Outdoor Adventure Prizes

By getting vaccinated, Albertans can win lifetime hunting licenses, camping experiences and other chances to enjoy the bounty of Alberta’s wilderness.

The Outdoor Adventure Vaccine Lottery gives Albertans another incentive to get vaccinated as soon as possible.

This includes fishing licenses, Canmore Nordic Centre ski passes and a once-ina-lifetime opportunity for a special license hunting tag for bighorn sheep, trophy pronghorn, elk or turkey.

Albertans can have a chance to win these outdoor prizes by receiving their first and second dose of COVID-19 vaccine and registering in the Outdoor Adventure Vaccine Lottery by 11:59 p.m. Sept. 10.

Due to the unique nature of these prizes, Albertans will be required to register separately for their chance to win.

Anyone who already registered for the Open for Summer Lottery will need to register again specifically for the Outdoor Adventure Vaccine Lottery if they want to win these prizes. Winners are expected to be announced on Sept. 17.

To date, 74.2 per cent of eligible Albertans have received their first dose of vaccine and 55.9 per cent are fully protected with two doses.

“Alberta is going the extra distance to get as many people vaccinated as possible. That means adding more targeted, unique prizes to our vaccine lottery. The Open for Summer Lottery has moved our vaccine numbers up and these new prizes should appeal to some folks who have not yet got around to being vaccinated.”

Jason Kenney, Premier stated, “Hunters and anglers know that it is critical to follow the rules and to look out for one another in order to stay safe. I encourage them to apply this mindset to COVID19 and book their shots if they have not already done so.”

Tyler Shandro, Minister of Health added, “Getting vaccinated is the best way to ensure that Alberta is open for summer and I encourage all Albertans to do their part. Alberta is a premier destination for outdoor activities like camping, hiking, hunting or fishing and this opportunity is one of the many ways to enjoy our beautiful backyard this summer with ease.”

Jason Nixon, Minister of Environment and Parks commented, “Every year, hundreds of thousands of Alberta hunters and anglers spend time outside with their

families, enjoying the natural splendor of this province. A lifetime hunting or fishing licence is something anyone who is an avid outdoors person would be happy to win. Hopefully a chance at this lifelong prize will be an incentive for more people to make the decision to get their COVID19 vaccination.”

Todd Zimmerling, president and CEO, Alberta Conservation Association stated, “We know Albertans are eager to start planning their summer adventures. Let’s all do our part by continuing to follow public health guidelines and getting vaccinated now so that we can get back to normal this summer.”

Bonnyville Chuckwagon Races And Chuckwagon Beerfest

Bonnyville will be holding chuckwagon races on August 5-8 and a chuckwagon Beerfest on Saturday of August 7.

The chuckwagons will be held at the Bonnyville Rodeo Grounds and will feature four days of hoofpounding excitement. On Thursday the grounds open at 5 p.m. with races starting at 7 p.m. Friday will be an action-packed day of fun with the Chamber Chili Cook-off from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. in downtown Bonnyville. The grounds will once again open at 5 p.m. with the races starting at 7 p.m. A dance will be held starting at 9 p.m. featuring Kendra Kay. Saturday morning will be kicked off with a pancake breakfast at 8 a.m. at the rodeo grounds, (sponsored by Fountain Tire and Bonnyville Regional Fire Authority), the grounds open at 5 p.m. with an Old-

Glen Partridge and his wife Elli from Sherwood Park stopped by the Vermilion Voice on July 26 to visit the old Bell building as Dr. Bell adopted his half-aunt. When his grandmother Mary Stonhan came from England in 1907, her husband Frank Irwin passed away in 1908 leaving her with three very young children. Mary gave her three young children up for adoption as she could not provide for them. Mary’s oldest daughter Victoria was adopted by Dr. Bell.

New Holland Agriculture And Lakeland College

(Vermilion, Alta.) Lakeland College is excited to announce that New Holland Agriculture will remain the college’s exclusive agricultural and utility equipment supplier until 2031.

The two organizations recently finalized a 10-year, multi-million-dollar agreement that will see New Holland continue to provide equipment to Lakeland. New Holland equipment is used on Lakeland’s student-managed farm as well as for college-wide grounds maintenance plus applied research and other programming initiatives. New Holland provides tractors, swathers, skid steers, and combines, among other equipment.

In recognition of this support, Lakeland’s student-managed farm will remain named the Student- Managed Farm – Powered by New Holland.

“New Holland remains committed to supporting the student-managed farm at Lakeland College,” says Mark Lowery, Director of Commercial Marketing for New Holland Agriculture North America.

“We thank the faculty, staff, and students at Lakeland College for recognizing the importance of production agriculture in North America.”

New Holland and Lakeland began their partnership in September 2011. At that time, Lakeland served 295 agricultural sciences students. This past academic year, 533 students took agricultural sciences programs.

“Since our partnership with New Holland Agriculture began, we’ve grown to become one of the largest providers of agriculture training in Western Canada.

We know that the innovative learning model available through our StudentManaged Farm – Powered by New Holland is a big factor in our growth,” says Dr. Alice Wainwright-Stewart, president

and CEO of Lakeland. “Our thanks to New Holland for ensuring our students have access to the latest equipment and technology. We’re proud to showcase New Holland’s products to the people who will be at the forefront of Canada’s agricultural industry for decades to come.”

As part of their second year of studies, animal science technology and crop technology students manage commercial-scale crop, livestock and ag research enterprises. Students work together to make decisions that are applied to the Student-Managed Farm – Powered by New Holland. With access to modern ag facilities and equipment, purebred and commercial beef cattle, dairy cattle and bison, plus more than 3,000 acres of crop and pasture land, the real world comes to Lakeland’s ag students before they graduate.

“This partnership allows us to coach our students in real-life scenarios, outlining the decision-making process and allowing them the opportunity to develop industry relationships,” says Geoff Brown, dean of agricultural sciences and environmental sciences at Lakeland.

Brown thanked both New Holland Agriculture and Webb’s Machinery, the local New Holland dealer, for their expertise and support. “They are active partners in educating students on the latest advancements in equipment and technology,” he says.

In addition to equipment, New Holland is contributing $450,000 to further agriculture technology programs. Of this amount, $150,000 will be used immediately towards Lakeland’s Agriculture Technology Centre, which will officially open this fall. These funds will help develop the new bachelor of agriculture technology curriculum, support research projects, and provide technology and materials for the labs. The remaining $30,000 annual

contribution will support ag technology initiatives at Lakeland. In recognition of this support, a lab in the Agriculture Technology Centre will be named Agriculture Technology Lab – Powered by New Holland.

New Holland also provides student awards from an endowment fund created early in the partnership.

Terrence “Terry” Francis Slattery born October 2, 1938 in Brantford, Ontario passed away on Thursday, July 21, 2021 in Stratford at age 82.

Marilyn Bouck of Kitscoty, AB passed away peacefully on July 28, 2021 at the age of 83 years.

Son of the late Gordon James & Kathleen E. (Smith) Slattery. Predeceased by his beloved wife Carol Ann (Wilson) Slattery and his sons Timothy and Wayne Francis Joseph Slattery.

Terry will be lovingly remembered by his daughter Mary Lynn Jesso, his sisters Gail Slattery, Theresa (Dan) Brookes&Lyla(Camiel) Van Poele. Along with his brothers James (Jim) Kurt,William Slattery, & Michael Kurt and his many nieces and nephews and close friends.

Terry was a cheerful and witty man who worked for many years as a self-employed carpenter and machinist in the Clinton, Seaforth and Mitchell area. He met and married his soulmate, Carol, shortly after meeting in the late 70’s. Terry moved to Mannsville, AB in the early 90’s with his wife as the “high plains drifter” with whom he shared the love of nature and gardening, painting, photography and all animals - especially cats. Terry returned to the Stratford area in the late 20’s after Carols passing to be closer to family.

Terry’s wishes were to be cremated and laid to rest in the family plot next to his beloved wife at the Mount Pleasant Cemetery and Crematorium in London, Ontario.

She was born in Lloydminster, Saskatchewan on December 29, 1937 to Robert and Borghild Adams. Marilyn married Ralph Marvin Bouck on April 25, 1959 and bought land between Kitscoty and Paradise Valley and started their family farm. There Mom worked

by Dad's side to build a great but simple life for our family.

Marilyn is survived by her loving family: sons, Duane (Charlene), Keith (Arlene) and Rod (Jackie) of Kitscoty; daughter, Gloria (Keith) of Pickardville; grandchildren, Chantelle (Ryan), Brandon, Justin (Amanda), Ian (Kelsey), Mark (Dakota), Shelbey (Austin), Ara (Ty) Aidan and Rees; and five great-grandchildren, Austin, Zane, Blake, Everly and Alice.

Marilyn was predeceased by: her loving husband, Ralph Bouck; parents, Robert and Borghild Adams; sister, Violet Toews and brother, David Adams.

Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, August 7 at the Clinton Lions Park Pavilion (77975 London Rd, Clinton, ON N0M 1L0). No funeral home visitation, the family will hold a small private funeral in London on August 14 @ 10:30am. RSVP; 416-300-8098.

Vermillion RCMP Vehicle Stop Leads To Seizure Of Drugs, Money, Weapons And A Stolen Travel Trailer

Vermilion RCMP Submitted

On July 29, 2021, at approximately 6:15 p.m., an officer with Vermillion RCMP Traffic Services was conducting routine traffic patrols on Highway 16 near Mannville in Minburn County, Alberta.

After conducting checks on a vehicle pulling a travel trailer, the officer observed that the licence plate did not match the trailer and a traffic stop was initiated. Further checks revealed that the trailer was stolen out of Parkland County and the driver was prohibited from driving.

As the officer was conducting checks, both the vehicle driver and passenger fled on foot into a wooded area. Additional officers from Verimilion, and Vegrerville detachments along with police dogs from both Cold Lake and St. Paul were

called to the scene and both individuals were located and arrested. A search of the trailer revealed two additional people inside who were also arrested.

The investigation into the contents of both the vehicle and trailer resulted in a significant seizure of drugs, weapons and Canadian Currency.

The following items were seized: - Nearly $8000 in Canadian Currency - Approximately 78 grams of suspected Cocaine with an estimated street value exceeding $4,000 - 68 grams of suspected Fentanyl with an estimated street value exceeding $13,000 -Approximately 1.7 kilograms of suspected Methamphetamine with an estimated street value exceeding $83,000 -9mm pistol ammunition -Concealed carry pistol holster

-Imitation Glock 19 handgun -Brass knuckles (prohibited weapon) -Stolen travel trailer valued at $60,000 Lance Larin, age 44 of Edmonton, has been charged with 8 offences including; possession for the purpose of trafficking in a controlled substance, possession of stolen property over $5000, and possession of a prohibited weapon. He has been remanded in custody with his next court appearance on August 3rd in Lloydminster.

Karley Rylaarsdam, age 33 of Edmonton, has been charged with 7 offences including; possession for the purpose of trafficking in a controlled substance, possession of stolen property over $5000, possession of a prohibited weapon, and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose. She has been remanded in custody with her next court appearance on August 3rd in Lloydminster.

Kelly Sanderson, age 28 of Sherwood Park, has been charged with 3 offences including; possession for the purpose of trafficking in a controlled substance. She has been brought before a Justice and has bail set at $1000 with conditions. Her next court appearance is set for August 16th in Vermillion.

Weather Wreaks Havoc On Local Area Crops

Agnes Pahl grew up on the farm in the Wiesenthal District near Leduc and Millet, Alberta. She had eight sisters, seven who survived to adulthood. Her parents, August and Freda Pahl joked they had their own girls ball team. Mom loved the out of doors and daily chores with the farm animals and crops. She lived that strong work ethic throughout her life.

The family eventually moved to Edmonton and Agnes found employment at Irving Kline Jewellers on Jasper Avenue. There she met the love of her life and in 1950 married John Kinniburgh, a watchmaker and became Aggie Kinniburgh to all who knew her.

John and Aggie established their first jewellery store in Vegreville, Alberta, a later location in Coronation, Alberta and eventually Kinniburgh Jewellers in Vermilion, Alberta in 1963. In Vermilion, they raised three children and were very active in the community with their jewellery business and as members of multiple organizations which for Aggie included church and choir. Mom loved to sing and play the piano. She sang in several choirs, volunteered extensively and was an active life-member of Eastern Star.

Mom was the heart and soul of our family and the successful multi-level business she helped to establish. With warmth and humour, Mom gave generously of her time and talents. She was a devoted and loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother, dearly missed by her family and friends, always in our hearts.

Agnes is forever loved and remembered by her Daughters Gail Brindle of Vermilion, Dawn Flaata (Rod Zaharko) of Vermilion, Daughterin-law Karen Kinniburgh of Edmonton, Grandchildren Carmen Brindle (Nathan), Darin Brindle (Whitney), Jaclyn Flaata (Suzanne), Matthew Flaata (Janae), Luke Flaata (Kelly), Kristen Kinniburgh (Rob), Nathan Kinniburgh, Great Grandchildren Isla Brindle, Dexon, Leighton, Rory Flaata, Thorian, Astrid Flaata, Jacksen, Ryder Kinniburgh.

She was predeceased by her Husband John, Son Lee.

It has not been an easy growing season for farmers across the Canadian prairies this year, and the struggles do not seem to be going away anytime soon. With record setting and breaking temperatures occurring throughout Alberta this summer, the agriculture industry has had to contend with stagnated growth of many crops, and many producers are facing lower yields than predicted at the start of the growing season. The hot weather is back, with temperatures in the high 20’s and low 30’s coming through the region this past weekend and no significant amount of rain predicted to arrive.

According to the July 27 Alber ta Crop Report put out by Alberta Agriculture and Forestry (AF), only 20% of the annual crops are rating as good or excellent, first cut hay is at average 1.0 ton per acre, and 50 per cent of the pasture acres are rated as poor.

Many grain crops have been reported as being turned to pasture or cut for silage. Region Three, which includes Vermilion and the surrounding areas have reported that overall, crop conditions are 63 per cent, (below the fiveyear average of 83 per cent) good or excellent. Crop stages for spring cereals are mostly in the early to mid-milk stage, while fall-seeded cereals have started to ripen. Canola is 73 per cent podding and dry peas have finished podding. Pasture is currently rated as 67 per cent poor, 18 per cent fair, and 15 per cent good. First-cut dryland hay is reported as 95 per cent completed with estimated yields of 0.9 ton per acre and quality rated as 78 per cent good or excellent.

Some farmers in the region will have to file insurance claims to help compensate for the loss in crop yields this fall. At this point, all some rain will do is help fill the heads out on crops that are still viable, but the window for that moisture to be effective is shrinking rapidly.

Conditions have become so extreme

that several counties and municipalities in the province, including the Counties of St. Paul and Minburn have declared States of Agricultural Disasters in their areas. An Agricultural Disaster Declaration is used by municipalities to bring awareness to issues surrounding excessive moisture and drought, which are having an impact on agricultural production. The declarations inform the provincial and federal governments that aid is needed by municipalities to get through a particularly horrible farming season. The intent is for declarations to encourage governments to initiate the necessary programs of relief for local producers.

At this time Alber ta has a verbal commitment from the federal govern-

ment that a joint AgriRecovery program will be created to support Alberta Ag producers. On July 22, Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food, the Honourable Marie-Claude Bibeau announced the early designation of the Livestock Tax Deferral provision for prescribed drought regions of British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Ontario.

Minister Bibeau also announced federal suppor t to all Prairie provinces for immediate bilateral adjustments to the cost-shared AgriInsurance program to make drought-damaged crops available for feed. These measures will increase the amount of crops available for livestock producers in this time of need, thereby helping offset the increased cost of feed.

How can I help a hurting child is a question as adults we ask ourselves at times when we feel so helpless in supporting and easing the emotional pain of the children.

Children experience so many losses in their lives that impact them with a grief response. “Change, Loss, Grief” It could be; a move, a pet loss, a new sibling, a broken home, physical loss of a parent or grandparent, peer, beginning school and now the change and losses caused

by COVID-19.

It is reported in an article from “Kids Hospital,” Toronto that the stats for mental health during the first wave of COVID -19 Februar y 2020 being 70 per cent worse in children 2-18. Social isolation and lack of social interaction seemed to be the lead cause for the decrease in mental wellness. Children experienced more loneliness, sleeplessness, worrying, overall sadness, feeling overwhelmed and irritable.

The Vermilion 4-H Sheep club held their Achievement Day and Sale on July 27 at the Sheep Barn on the Vermilion Ag Society grounds. Throughout the year, members learned how to communicate with each other in different ways,

completed workshops both virtually and in-person on grooming, nutrition, parasite management, pathology etc. The day provided club members the opportunity to show their market lambs and goats at 1 p.m. Final market lamb and goat show classes were held at 5 p.m. with the sale at 6 p.m. at the same location.
