T h e d i s c ove r y of 215 c h i l d r e n s remains at the Kamloops Indian Residential school was announced by the chief of the Tk’emlups te Secwepemc First Nation.

The Town of Vermilion lowered its flags on May 31 to half-mast in a show of solidarity and to mourn the loss of the 215 children found buried at the former Kamloops Indian Residential school, as well as in memory of the thousands of children who were sent to residential

schools.

“For those who never returned, and in honour of the families whose lives were forever changed.

It is absolutely devasting to hear that the remains of 215 children have been discovered on the grounds of a former residential school in Kamloops,” stated Mayor Caroline McAuley. “The community of Vermilion holds the victims and their families in our thoughts.”

The flags flew at half-mast for eight days and 23 hours.

SIGA has announced that beginning June 20, they will be re-opening all of their seven casino properties at 10 a.m. with the exception of the Gold Horse Casino that will open at 11 a.m.

The casinos will start with a reduced capacity of 150 people maximum while maintaining the regulated physical distancing requirements set by public health guidelines. SIGA stated that it operates in a highly regulated industry and that even before the pandemic, the organizations cleaning and safety protocol were of the highest standards.

According to SIGA, last summer, they implemented an enhanced health and safety program which increased the frequency of cleaning and sanitation throughout its properties while managing physical distancing practices. SIGA will still continue with contact tracing processes and guest are required to check-in prior to entering the casino through the guest’s Players Club card or by providing a name and contact

number. All visitors will also have to particpate in a simple screening process before entering the casino.

The casinos will offer select gaming and food service, and will enhance their services offered as restrictions are lifted.

Farm Curl - Old Timers Cabin - Reunion Hall

One yearly event I always look forward to is the farm curl. Hosted by The Vermilion Agricultural Society in partnership with the Vermilion Curling Club the farm curl is a great way to celebrate our farmers with fellowship and sportsmanship.

Starting more than 65 years ago and continuing annually since the farm curl is now considered tradition by many. While

some of the events surrounding the farm curl have changed, the event itself has stayed true to its roots by encompassing our community and members from the surrounding area with an agricultural influence, it continues to be an appreciation for the farm component of the community.

With a banquet and entertainment, the farm curl is always a good time enjoyed by many. The Reunion Hall at the Vermilion Fairgrounds is also a service enjoyed

by many. It is an air-conditioned meeting room located just above the Vermilion Ag Society main office, that plays host to livestock meetings, school reunions, and exhibitor meals. Located directly above the Agricultural Society Office. This space offers seating for approximately 200 people with room for a dance floor.

For those looking for a change of pace from the beer gardens there is also a fully licensed bar as well. Reunion Hall is open all three days of the Fair and welcomes anyone to stop in, have a drink and enjoy the comfort. By the way, please bring along your friends! Across the fairgrounds lies another “hidden gem” of the fair in the Old-Timers Cabin.

The Old Timers Cabin is a place for our seniors to sit and reminisce with oneanother. Venture within and you’re bound to end up receiving an impromptu history lesson. The Old Timers cabin is also host to new washrooms that are always

The 1948 Vermilion Plane Crash

In May of 1948, Viscount Alexander Governor General of Canada was visiting Vermilion with his wife Lady Alexander in order to attend an air show in the community. Sadly, that air show would result in a tragedy.

Cyrill Wetterley was piloting an aircraft towards Vermilion in order to see the air show. As he approached the Vermilion field, the plane suddenly plunged to the ground and crashed into the farmland owned by William MeGinnes.

The plane was owned by Wetterley and was completely destroyed. The crash occurred half an hour before the air show was about to start. The air show would go on as planned with no one aware of the deaths that had happened nearby.

An airfield control tower employee reported quote: “It appeared the pilot lost control of the aircraft or it suddenly lost airspeed and plunged into the ground.”

Wreckage was scattered around the field but the plane did not catch fire.

Also present on the plane was a 15-year-old boy named Walter Baranec, who was on his way to see the airshow with Cyrill.

High-Speed Internet Anywhere In The World

The modern world relies heavily on the internet, whether it’s work or play everyone is spending some time online, because of this it’s hard to believe that so many people still have such outdated service from their providers. In some areas of rural Alberta, the internet can be as slow as 100kbps (too slow to load a web page reliably) and can even be inconsistent with its connection. Many people are forced to endure the annoyances of satellite internet with its high price and still mediocre

service. However, a new age of satellite internet is on the horizon, boasting high speeds and low latency, this new internet will bring everyone into the modern age.

Starlink is a company specializing in satellite internet, promising they can give connection to everyone regardless of country or location, at speeds that were never possible before. Over the last year, Space X (Starlink’s parent company) has launched over 1000 satellites for their internet service. Starlink varies slightly from the traditional techniques of how satellite internet has been done in the past, rather than the standard distance from the surface they opt to launch their satellites into low Earth orbit (about 500km in the

For those who don’t know, latency is how long it takes for the information requested by the computer to fly up to the satellite, reach the tower on the ground, then return back through the satellite to your house. So, given that it takes time to travel those distances, even for radio waves, it should be obvious that having a shorter path to follow would result in snappier service and lower loading times. This is especially important for those who partake in online gaming where a maximum of 50ms of delay is required for a smooth and lag-free experience, something Starlink is able to provide where the traditional satellite solutions are not. This has allowed Starlink to not only lower latency but also increase its speeds to about 150mb/s, about 6 times faster than its competitors.

Although Starlink has considerable improvements over its competition some

do have concerns. Notably, due to the satellites being 60 times closer to earth than what has been typically done people are worried that they will pollute the night sky with unwanted lights. And while at first, that was the case, Starlink has since made improvements to help lower the visibility of its satellites. Now rather than leaving the brightness of the light full they dim them once they know they are in proper orbit and functioning correctly, they have also worked with astronomers to ensure that they will not interfere with stargazing. So if you’re lucky in the first week of a new launch you may see a line of lights sliding across the night sky, but after that, they are dimmed until they are virtually invisible to the naked eye. Unfortunately, not everyone will be able to use this new satellite internet yet, as Starlink has not yet finished launching its satellites into orbit.

Though, once it has completed its plan they are sure to offer the service everywhere regardless of geographical location as well as improve the speed and reliability even further.

A Safe Future For Canada’s New Crop Of Farmers

With more and more farmers reaching the age of retirement, Canada’s agricultural industry needs more young farmers.

However, farming is a demanding occupation, both mentally and physically, and few agricultural workers have access to the support they need.

A lack of new blood In the last 25 years, the proportion of farmers under the age of 35 in Canada has fallen by 70 per cent. Despite the steady stream of graduates from agricultural sciences programs across the country, millennial farmers remain few and far between. This is in part due to high land prices, meaning that many young farmers start their careers with a financial disadvantage.

A volatile market To make matters worse, the grain market is notoriously volatile. Economic and political tensions often impact the price of cash crops on which many producers rely to make ends meet. Combined with the demands of farm work and the inherent uncertainty that comes with an increasingly unpredictable climate, young farmers face many sources of stress.

An isolated population By and large, young farmers are isolated

from their peers. According to the Canadian Young Farmers’ Forum (CYFF), there simply aren’t enough young producers to support effective networks. Isolation worsens the negative psychological impacts of job-related stress and also reduces the resources young farmers can draw on if they have questions or need help.

A safety problem Mental health directly impacts workplace safety. High stress is correlated with increased accident risks. For young farmers, who are likely to be raising children on

the farm, this higher risk can have devastating personal and professional consequences.

The CYFF works to build links between provincial organizations and young farm-

ers. Millennial producers should make it a point to find out what support they can get from their local organizations. This will help ensure a safe and productive agricultural future.

Spreading Awareness About Mental Health In The Agriculture Industry

In recent years, the topic of mental healt h in agr i c ulture has b e en an area of increasing public concern.

Due to unpredictable weather, unstable markets, heav y workloads and increasing environmental concerns, people who work in agriculture are at high risk for stress, anxiety, depression and burnout.

According to a study done by the University of Guelph, 35 per cent of farmers in Canada demonstrate symp-

toms of depression, while 58 per cent meet the criteria for anxiety. An additional 45 per cent of those working in agriculture are experiencing high levels of stress. Suicide rates are also higher in agriculture than in any other profession.

One organization in Canada that is working to create awareness about mental health in agriculture is the Do M ore Ag Found ation. Do M ore Ag recognizes that some of the indus-

tr y ’s c ore valu e s — su c h a s har d work, resilience, strength and selfs u f f i c i e n c y — c a n b e c o m e we a knesses when they inhibit farmers from sharing their struggles and asking for help. The foundation seeks to break the stigma surrounding mental illness and encourage those in the agriculture industry to “Talk More, Ask More, Listen More.”

Do More Ag operates according to three pillars: awareness, community and research. The nationwide nonprofit is working to educate the public

about the state of mental health in agriculture, foster an inclusive, empathetic community among agricultural workers, and promote research that examines mental health issues in the industry. Recently, the organization par tnered with the company Bayer CropScience to launch a “ Not-So Silent Auction” to call attention to the high suicide rates among farmers and raise money for creating more awareness and resources.

3 Small-Scale Farming Ideas

Small-scale farming is a great opportunity to add an additional source of income to your operation. Here are three types of ventures you may want to consider.

1. Beekeeping Beekeeping has become increasingly popular as demand for raw honey, beeswax and royal jelly has multiplied. Just one or two hives in your backyard can produce several pounds of surplus honey to share with family and friends or to sell at farmers markets.

2. Microgreens Microgreens require very little effort to grow and can rake in up to $63 per pound. They can be grown indoors or outdoors on a covered porch

or in a shade house. Unlike traditional vegetable crops that take two to four months to grow, microgreens are ready to sell in just 10 to 14 days.

3. Mushrooms Oyster and shiitake mushrooms are proven sellers that are frequently in high demand. Although traditionally grown on logs outdoors, they can be grown in a small barn or greenhouse, or even in a basement or spare room. They don’t usually take very long to mature and can be grown and harvested in about six weeks.

Spring Babies Have Arrived, Here’s What You Should And Shouldn’t Do

People often come across baby wildlife during the spring months, and it can be hard to determine if mom is away for the day, or has left for good. Here are some steps from Alberta Parks to take to ensure you are making the right move when you see baby wildlife in your neighbourhood.

1) The best thing to do is leave it be Unless the animal is injured, clearly in distress, or you know for a fact the parent is dead, don’t assume the animal is orphaned.

Most mothers hide their young and return periodically to feed and care for them. If the parent hasn’t returned in several hours - up to a day—then there could be cause for alarm. But don’t assume they haven’t returned just because you haven’t seen

them. Mother rabbits, for example, only visit dens sites to feed their young at dusk and dawn. Many baby animals, such as deer, are odorless and camouflaged and will be nearly invisible to predators when hidden by mom.

2) For nestlings (chicks without feathers), if you can see the nest nearby, gently return it to the nest (contrary to popular belief, touching a baby bird will not cause the mother to abandon it). If you can’t find the nest, place the bird in a small box or basket and hang it from a high branch. Young chicks with feathers, called fledglings, need to learn to fly and have to leave the nest to do so. They should be left alone. If you have pets, keep them on a leash or out of the yard. Keep an eye on the fledgling and if it hasn’t left in a few hours, you may want

There is no update from Municipal Affairs as of yet regarding the Intermunicipal Collaboration Framework (ICF) arbitration that needs to happen. The Ministry at present is drafting the municipal order required for arbitration to proceed.

Seniors’ Week in Alberta is always the first full week in June and it has been a tradition dating back 35 years.

This year Seniors’ Week is June 7-13.

It provides community members, family, and friends the opportunity to celebrate and recognize all the seniors of their communities and the contributions they make to society.

to support each other, their families, and their communities.

As we start to see the end of the pandemic, I would like to acknowledge the many seniors who have endured this difficult time with grace and fortitude. Seniors are the strength of Alberta.

Retirement Community Living: How To Create A Budget

Have you recently moved into a seniors’ residence, or do you plan to make the transition in the near future? If so, creating a budget will help you avoid unpleasant surprises, enable you to treat yourself on occasion and ensure fi­nancial security during this chapter of your life. Here’s how to do it.

Identify your sources of income To determine how much money you’ll have available each month, add up your various sour­ces of income. These may include:

• A registered pension plan (RPP) • Canada pension plan (CPP) payments • An old age security (OAS) pension • A registered retirement savings plan (RRSP) • A tax-free savings account (TFSA) Calculate your monthly expenses Start with the price of housing at your seniors’ residence, which may include the costs for heating, electricity and meals.

The amount might also cover expenses for nursing care, television, leisure activities and more. Additionally, list any monthly

expenses that aren’t included in your rent like laundry services, parking and haircuts.

Give yourself some leeway Once you’ve determined how much money you’ll have left each month after paying for your various expenses, remember to set your remaining income aside in a savings account. This way, if your rent

increases or you have an unexpected expense (car repair, new medication, etc.), you can cover the cost without experiencing financial hardship.

Lakeland Joins Giving Challenge To Support Student Success Lakeland College Submitted

L a ke l a n d C o l l e g e i s l o o k i n g t o enhance student success supports with the Great Canadian Giving Challenge.

Every dollar donated throughout the month of June will support Lakeland students and bring the college one step closer to winning $20,000. Charities and non-profits, like Lakeland College, receive an entry to win $20,000 for every dollar donated. Overall, the funds raised through the Great Canadian Giving Challenge will support Lakeland’s largest fundraising campaign to date, Leading.

all the additional stress of the pandemic, they’ve needed extra supports for their mental health and wellness, as well as finances. A major pillar of our Leading.

The power of donor support has been transformative for Zoe Quinney. After competing the esthetician program in 2020, Quinney returned to Lakeland this year to enhance

her wellness skills and complete the hairstyling program, with support from Lakeland’s student awards program.

“Receiving a scholarship was amazing because it helped me go to school,” says Quinney, who hails from Frog Lake, Alta.

“Supports like this are so important. They give students the drive to get high marks, to finish school, and they increase the accessibility of post-secondary education. Lakeland’s student supports have been so helpful too. When I was struggling, the wellness advisor gave me a lot of resources to reach out to for the help I needed for my mental health. It all ended up working the way I needed it to.

The staff at St. J e r o m e ’s w e r e s o excited to have our Spartans back in class for the last month of the school year! We have had beautiful weather and the kids have been enjoying playing outside. In gym class, many students are practicing and preparing for the year-end school track meet. Obviously, things will have to be run a little differently this year, but nonetheless we are excited to be learning and playing together again!

On May 28, we proudly celebrated our graduating Spar tans with an in-school grad ceremony. The tradition of an in-school ceremony for graduates started many years ago as an opportunity for current students and staff to recognize this wonderful achievement!

This year, it was held virtually, through Zoom. The students loved hearing stories about the graduates and enjoyed watching the slide show of the students over the years. After the ceremony was finished, the graduates paraded through the halls, where the students and staff were lined up cheering and holding signs! Graduates, wherever your road in life leads you, don’t forget that… “Once a Spartan, always a Spartan!” We are wishing you all the best for a bright future ahead!

Grade 10 students at St. Jerome’s are very blessed to be able to participate in CTS classes at Lakeland College

for the month of June. Keith Martin, a former teacher at St. Jerome’s started the program many years ago to allow students the opportunity to earn credits while being taught by experts in the field of carpentry, mechanics, and welding.

Students attend classes at the college all day, everyday, for three weeks. This is an invaluable experience for these students as they work on many projects such as building an Adirondack Chair, changing the oil and doing maintenance on cars and trucks, and even welding bird houses. Thank you to the professors at Lakeland College for investing their time and energy into our students, what a wonderful opportunity for our Spartans.

Congratulations to Austin Laurence for placing second in VIBE’s high school mental health art competition. Austin’s unique and deeply meaningful image competed against art submitted from all entries from VIBE high schools! Austin will receive a cheque for $150 from VIBE for his placement! Congratulations Austin!

Following in the footsteps of the grade 12 students, our littlest Spartans are preparing to walk the stage as well.

The Kindergarten students will be doing their graduation ceremony this year via livestream! They have been practicing hard and are ready to sing their hearts out for you! The Kindergarten Graduation ceremonies will livestream on the school website June 17 & 18 at 1:30pm.

Then Mrs. Joa recognized the students who dressed up for our “dress for any season or holiday” day, and then ran a quick activity online. Mrs. Moses informed us that June’s virtue is respect and then presented us with a video on that topic. We congratulate Hunter Cusack for winning the virtue draw.

Mrs. Tomkins enlightened us on the AR points for June – 810.3, which brings our total AR points for the year to 14 500.6

points. Mats Tjares was the division 1 top reader and Edwin Sanford was division 2’s reader of the month. 3A and 5B were the top achieving reading classes for the month of May. Wow, this year has been a year full of hard work on the part of students and families.

We wanted to take the time to recognize and thank you for all the hard work this year. We received some MyBP cards from Boston Pizza and are having a random draw for our VES families.

Each card is loaded to receive 5 free kid’s meals, valued at $7.99 each. The cards can be registered to a MYBP account, which then would award you for a sixth free meal. You can redeem

your free kids’ meals in-store, or phone orders for take out by providing your card number. These cards do expire June 30, 2021 so please use quickly.

Leading up to the Indigenous Day on June 21, VES will be partaking in a week of Indigenous activities and mini workshops from June 14-18. Each class is signed up for live virtual tipi teachings, where they will learn the meaning behind each pole of Cree style tipi, while one of the interpreters builds a tipi with that class. Other activities during the week will include reading Indigenous stories, playing Indig-

enous games, trying their hand at art projects, and learning how to do cultural dances, such as the Metis jig and the Chicken Dance. As well, each student will get to try some homemade bannock.

We are so super excited about all the learning and fun that will take place.

The WOW and VIBE mental health programs will be running summer live virtual programming in the mornings from July 5 to August 20 for all preschool to Grade 6 students. If you register by June 15, you will receive a kit for the crafts on Fridays. Weather And Spraying; A Turbulent Relationship

Wrapping up a conversation with my neighbour two weeks ago about the difference between soil and dirt (see Issue 876) I made a statement along the lines of a ‘few quiet weeks’ in his life while the growing season took hold and progressed. His response? An extremely amused laugh. I am learning quickly that farming never has downtime.

Next on the farming calendar? Spraying, if needed. According to the Royal Society of Chemistry, crop protection chemicals can provide a cost-effective way of improving the yield and the quality of crops. They also make harvesting more straightforward and support the maintenance of consistent yields from year to year.

There are three central groups of crop protection chemicals, herbicides, insecticides and fungicides. Selective herbicides can help control the growth of weeds which grow among a crop, competing with it for water, nutrients

and sunlight. Insecticides are utilized when needed to deal with harmful bugs, like flea beetles, cutworms and armyworms. Fungicides help stop the spread of fungi and their spores on plants. Without crop protection chemicals agriculture would be less efficient.

Like so many aspects of farming, weather has a direct correlation to the need for spraying a crop. It can determine the intensity of spraying, type of chemical, and amount of times a crop is sprayed in a season. Temperature and rainfall are the central weather factors of spraying possibilities in Alberta. In combination with the growth stage of the crop, these two factors can determine what chemical protection is best, and whether it is bugs or weeds that will grow and prosper in a field. Fungicide use is highly contingent on the weather, as a dry year sometimes does not require application of them. Around these parts, spraying is more often tied to weed control, as pesticides are harmful to all types of bugs, and farmers will try to preser ve the habitats needed

for helpful insects, such as ladybugs.

Spraying of a crop can happen more than once a year, and can be for a different reason. A farmer may have to spray for weed control early in the season, then go back with an insecticide later in the growing season if an invasive bug moves in.

The third weather factor that can affect spraying is the wind. Farmers have to be aware of wind speed and direction when spraying their crops due to the possibility of spray drifting.

The Alberta Government agriculture website defines spray drift as “the aerial movement and unintentional deposit of pesticides outside of the target area.” If spraying is done under less than ideal wind conditions, neighbouring crops and floral life can be destroyed. Farmers are required to spray responsibly,

taking care to not endanger the areas surrounding their crops. The combination of these factors can provide a very small window of opportunity to spray a field, meaning a farmer has to be available to literally hop into the sprayer when the time is right.

As gardening season begins, the first things to pop up always seem to be the weeds.

Instead of just pulling them up, trying to kill or eradicate them, have another think.

These plants thrive just about anywhere in the world especially in places that humans have disturbed the earth. They are full of nutrients that make them resilient and able to survive just about anything that we throw at them. We can use these qualities for our own well-being, in these times we should be looking at anything that brings more sustainability to our lives.

Here I will just give a very basic look at a five of our least loved weeds and hopefully change your mind on how they are viewed.

Dandelion – this bright yellow flower has to be one of the most hated weeds.

the spring so it is essential to them after a cold winter. From a health point of view, the leaves are high in vitamins and minerals, making them an excellent addition to your salads. They are also anti-inflammatory so help in any health condition where inflammation may be an issue, such as arthritis.

The root contains properties that can help with insulin productions, pancreatic health and balancing blood sugar as well as acting as a liver and gall bladder cleanser so a cup of dandelion root tea is a great daily health boost. The stalk, when broken produces a latex sap, which is renowned for its, qualities in getting rid of warts. Nettles can improve prostate function and are high in iron. They are easy to pick if you wear gloves and use scissors, after being left to dry on a counter top for half an hour they lose their sting. The easiest way to use nettles is in a cup of tea; simply infuse a tablespoon of fresh nettles in a cup of hot water for 10 to 15 minutes for full health benefits. They can also be dried and added to soups and stews or used in any recipe that you would use spinach.

Thistles – Another plant that most people hate due to its prickly spines.

The thistle has a wide range of medicinal purposes; its usual use, however, is as a liver and gall bladder tonic. Thistle roots can be dug up and dried for a liver function boosting tea, the stalk and leaves can be juiced. It is antimicrobial and the tea can be used as a wound wash.

Plantain – This can be so annoying, popping up on driveways and paths.

However, plantain is another plant that has been used for medicinal purposes since the time of the ancient Greeks. Plantain is full of high levels of calcium, protein, iron, vitamins and minerals. It can be added to salads and eaten raw or dried and blended into a powder to add to smoothies or soups for a touch of green in the winter. It works great as a poultice for any sting or bite, grab a leaf, chew it up and put it on your next mosquito bite!! A tea can be made for soaking aching blistered feet in after a long

day and used as a skin wash for spots or acne. The leaves can be juiced for internal healing or just drink the tea.

Purslane – another weed that pops up everywhere. Purslane contains more Omega-3 than any other known plant. It is high in vitamins A, B, C and E, B-complex, iron, beta-carotene, magnesium, calcium and potassium. In fact, it contains 6 times more vitamin E than spinach. All this makes it one of the most nutritious of all known plants. Purslane is best used internally when juiced along with plenty of water and maybe an apple, it can have an unpleasant slimy texture used alone. Although a couple of leaves chewed will help to heal sore or receding gums It can also be used externally as a skin wash made from tea for burns, including sunburn, cuts and wounds.
