Cornerstone Co-op Fuel Good Day Supports Food Bank

Cornerstone Co-op along with other Co-ops throughout Western Canada held their annual Fuel Good Day on September 15. During Fuel Good Day 5 cents of every litre of all grades of gasoline and diesel fuels purchased was donated to a local charity or non profit organization and this year Cornerstone Co-op has chosen to

donate the proceeds to the local food bank. “This year we are donating to the local food banks,” said Vermilion Cornerstone Co-op gas bar assistant manager Arleigh Reid. During the day Co-op had volunteers such as Mayor Caroline McAuley, CAO for the Town of Vermilion, George Rogers, Community Economic Development Officer for the Town of Vermilion,

Mary Lee Prior as well as volunteers from the community including the Vermilion Credit Union, Victim Services, Vermilion RCMP etc. whom helped pass out free coffee coupons and $2 off Booster Juice coupons. With gas prices at Co-op set at 96.4 it was definitely enticing as other local gas bars were priced higher. Up until midnight on September 15 many community members fueled up or topped up their

tank which gave Cornerstone Co-op Gas bar in Vermilion the opportunity to donate $750 to the Vermilion Food Bank and raise over $2,700 combined for local food banks in the Cornerstone area! “We really want to thank our community for all their support for this event.” said Assistant Manager Arleigh Reid. Since its launch in 2017 across Western Canada the Co-op Fuel Good day has raised nearly $1.9 million.

Midwest Family Connections Programming

Reporter

Midwest Family Connections (MFC) hosted a “Play and Learn” Event at Vermilion’s Heritage Museum Park on September 16. MFC is based out of Lloydminster and offers yearround programming within a 100-kilometre radius. Due to COVID-19, the Play and Learn event is the first event MFC has hosted in Vermilion in six months. The Play and Learn event consisted of a story, activities, some developmental information, and a take-home craft. “Play and learn is basically based on bringing the community together, and empowering parents,” explained MFC staff member Desiree Gatin. MFC is currently offering additional programming through Zoom, and hope to resume regular programming in the future. “We’re just figuring out logistics right now,” said Gatin. As well, MFC offers Parent Education programs in oneon-one and group settings, and referral based in home services. Midwest Family Connections is also organizing “Craftastic Fridays”, where parents are able to pick up takehome crafts at the Regional Centre from 9:30-11a.m. At the end of the month, there will be a Zoom show-and-tell meeting where children will be able to show off the crafts they’ve made. Registration is required. For more information on MFC programming, visit their facebook page or on instagram @midwest.family.connections.

On Monday June 29, 2020 Mr. & Mrs. Walter & Genevieve Stoyko celebrated their 70th Wedding Anniversary at the extended care facility in Vermilion. Despite the cool rainy day the Bride & Groom were as excited as the day they were married. Looking their finest, their smiles were contagious throughout the home. Everyone was treated to Tim Hortons coffee and to round out the celebration, Chocolate Cherry Cake was served (to everyone) as well. Although the Bride is now 91 and the Groom is 93, the Love they have for each other is as strong as their ages and reflects and sparkles in their eyes still and when they met many years ago and fell in love. Congratulations to you both and May God Bless You Always with much health, happiness and love guiding you both forever. We are extending thanks and God's Blessing to all the Health Care workers involved who made this day so very special.

Pumpkin Oatbran And Flax Muffins

A h eal t hy mu f fin is great to enjoy for break fast or your morning coffee break. Yo u c an s e n d i t in school lunches, take it to work or out to the field for harvesters. This muffin recipe makes 12 muffins. One of the main ingredients is pumpkin. Pumpkin is high in the antioxidants alpha and beta carotene (vitamin A) which are known for their benefits for your eyes, reduce the risk of certain cancers and their anti-aging properties. Only 1/2 cup of pumpkin supplies 100% of your daily vitamin A requirement. A unique carotenoid, beta-cryptoxanthin is also found

Elaina John

in pumpkin and it may reduce the risk of lung cancer in smokers. Pumpkin is a good source of fiber, iron, vitamin C, vitamin E & potassium. Pumpkin is low in calories and a source of calcium. Oats contain a special fiber called beta-glucan, which has been proven to have the beneficial effect of removing cholesterol from the digestive track, before it can enter the blood stream. Recent research has discovered a compound in the oats called avenanthramides which helps to protect the good LDL cholesterol from oxidation. This protective effect lasts longer if you have a food that contains vitamin C along with your muffin. There is vitamin C in the pumpkin but a large percentage of it is lost by cooking. The oats, oat bran, ground flax seed and cinnamon help to stabilize

blood sugar, which may be beneficial for people with diabetes, insulin resistant metabolic syndrome and obesity. The pumpkin, oat bran, oat flour and ground flax seed are all excellent fiber sources. Flax is a very good source of healthy omega 3. I like using unbleached flour instead of white wheat flour because then the immune system in our gut does not have to deal with the bleaching agents in the flour. You can enjoy these muffins guilt free and reap all their benefits from their nutritious ingredients. Pumpkin Oat Bran and Flax Muffins 1 cup unbleached flour 1/2 cup oat bran 1/2 cup ground flax seed 1/2 cup ground oat flour 1 teaspoon baking powder

It is with deep sadness that the family announces the passing of our mother at 96 years of age on September 11th. Alice will be lovingly remembered by her children, Gail (Herm)Hordal, Betty Anne (David)Rostrup, Linda(Brian)Lovig, Bill (Pat)Soldan, 13 grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild. Also on the very day Alice left this world a new great grandchild was born. Alice will also be missed dearly by her brother, Harry Brant. She was predeceased by her husband Samuel Soldan. Alice was a nursing graduate of St Pauls School of Nursing Saskatoon, graduating in 1946. She nursed in Fort San-Fort Qu’appelle, Sask.,Red Cross Outpost in Loon Lake, Sask.,Vermilion and Oyen, AB. She was a beautiful soul and always had a positive outlook on life. Singing, music, travel and her faith were so important to her. We were so blessed to have her in our lives. She was steadfast in her love of family and left a lasting impression with those fortunate to meet her. She will always be remembered for that very special smile. The depths of sorrow we cannot tell, Of the loss of one we loved so well; And while she sleeps a peaceful sleep, Her memory we shall always keep. Amidst these unprecedented times the family will have a private celebration of life.

When I write these columns, I often deal with history from the early 20th century, and occasionally from the late 19th century. Today though, I am changing things up and going a bit farther back in time. When I say a bit farther back, I mean millions of years to when the area of Vermilion looked very, very different. The history of Vermilion and nearby Mannville only goes back to the late-19th century, but the ground beneath our feet has a long and amazing history. First, we are going to go back roughly 140 million years when Vermilion was much closer to the coast than it is today and was

in a semi-foothill area. The world was much warmer at this point, and our earliest ancestors of mammals were small, while large reptiles dominated the area. Flowers may be a beautiful part of our landscape now but back 140 million years ago, they were just starting to evolve. The land that Vermilion would be located on at this point would form the Mannville Formation, and the Lower Mannville of this era is made up of chert pebbles, fine-grained sand, quartz sand and the animal and plant life would form into coal over millions of years. This part of the formation measures 230 feet. Above that layer we have more fine grained sand, with the layer measuring 100 to 130 feet. The Lower Mannville layer is capped off by sandstone, limestone, shale and fossils of ostracods. These were small seed shrimp found in freshwater, of which there seemed

to be plenty in the Vermilion area. By 105 million years ago, a huge inland sea stretched down from the future Arctic region, covering nearly all of Manitoba and Saskatchewan, and Vermilion being on the shores of this water body. Dinosaurs are evolving at this time and several would be found in the region including Dromaeosaurus, Anodontosaurus and Thescelosaurus. This part of the Mannville Formation features fine grained quartz sandstone. This area encompasses the Upper Mannville Formation layer, which includes marine shale and sandstone, thanks to that huge sea that cut straight through future Canada. All the life, plants, dinosaurs, insect and more would be compressed over time in this formation and produce the oil industry that is such an important part of the economy of the area today. Today, all that oil comes from the

Did you know that September is Acne Awareness Month in Canada? Acne, or acne vulgaris, is a skin problem that starts when oil and dead skin cells clog up your pores. Some people call it blackheads, blemishes, whiteheads, pimples, or zits. When you have just a few red spots, or pimples, you have a mild form of acne. Severe acne can mean hundreds of pimples that can cover the face, neck, chest, and back. Or it can be bigger, solid, red lumps that are painful (cysts). Acne is very common among teenagers. It usually gets better after the teenage years. Some women who never had acne growing up will have it as an adult, often right before their menstrual peri-

ods. How you feel about your acne may not be related to how bad it is. Some people who have severe acne are not bothered by it. Others are embarrassed or upset even though they have only a few pimples. The good news is that there are many good treatments that can help you get acne under control. What causes acne? Acne starts when oil and dead skin cells clog the skin’s pores. If germs get into the pores, the result can be swelling, redness, and pus. For most people, acne starts during the teenage years. This is because hormone changes make the skin oilier after puberty starts. Acne can run in families. If one of your

parents had severe acne, you are more likely to have it. What are the symptoms? Symptoms of acne include whiteheads, blackheads, and pimples. These can occur on the face, neck, shoulders, back, or chest. Pimples that are large and deep are called cystic lesions. These can be painful if they get infected. They also can scar the skin. How is acne treated? To help control acne, keep your skin clean. Avoid skin products that clog your pores. Look for products that say “noncomedogenic” on the label. Wash your skin once or twice a day with a gentle soap or acne wash. Try not to scrub or pick at your pimples. This can make them worse and can cause scars. If you have just a few pimples to treat, you can get an acne cream without a prescription. Look for one that has adapalene, benzoyl peroxide, or salicylic

acid. These work best when used just the way the label says. It can take time to get acne under control. But if you haven’t had good results with non-prescription products after trying them for three months, see your doctor. A prescription gel or skin cream may be all you need. If you are a woman, taking certain birth control pills may help. If you have acne cysts, your doctor may suggest a stronger medicine, such as isotretinoin. This medicine works very well for some kinds of acne. What can be done about acne scars? There are many skin treatments, such as laser resurfacing or dermabrasion, that can help acne scars look better and feel smoother. Ask your doctor about them. The best treatment for you depends on how severe the scarring is. Your doctor may refer you to a plastic surgeon.

FALL Renovation

Top 3 Home Renovation Scams – And How To Avoid Them

(NC) Home makeovers and repairs are on the rise, as we try to make our spaces more livable and functional. But even if you prefer to DIY most projects, some inevitably require the help of a professional. Finding a reliable contractor is where you can run into trouble, as there are many contractor scams in the industry. “While on the ground supporting our customers, some have told us that they have been approached by contractors going door-to-door to offer repair services with deals that seem too good to be true,” explains Bryant Vernon, Chief Claims Officer at Aviva Canada. “It’s important for everyone to protect themselves against contractors who may be taking advantage of homeowners especially after a severe weather event.” Here are some of the most common scams to beware of, and some tips on what you can do about them: The storm chaser. These nomad roofers go across the country chasing hailstorms and other natural disasters. They are quick to show up on your doorstep after a severe weather event. Familiar with how insurance companies work, these contractors charge a hefty amount using inferior quality products and promise to help you close your file quickly with the insurance company. But they are nowhere to be found should you find yourself with a

leaky roof a few years later. The unbelievably low bid. This roofing contractor will offer a bid that is far lower than any other construction companies in the area. But once the job starts, unexpected costs and unforeseen problems may suddenly appear. Some contractors may even resor t to removing the old roof or threaten to leave the roof bare if additional payments aren’t made. The door-to-door free roof inspection. Similar to the storm chaser, this doorto-door salesperson will come knocking offering a free roof inspection. They will

go up on your roof and possibly fabricate damage to mimic storm damage or show you a photo with roof damage from a different home and claim it came from your roof. What you can do Always do your research and get a couple of quotes from reputable companies to compare before deciding on the one to hire. Be cautious of those asking for upfront deposits and make sure the

payment structure is clear from the beginning. Ask about all the steps of the project, completion times and liability insurance. While not required by law, a company that does not have liability insurance means any damage to property resulting from the renovation may not be covered by them. Celebrating Six Years At Elevation

Elaina John Reporter

On September 19, Elevation celebrated six years of business with pop up shops, sales, and prizes. Seven designers such as Velveteen Vintage and Spruce Metal Concepts featured on a consignment basis in Elevation set up shop in front of the store with products for sale. Many designers featured in Elevation are local, from Lloydminster to Edmonton. Various draws were held throughout the day with prizes donated by local businesses and designers, including merchandise, gift cards, facials, and more.

Elevation also had a sale, in which regular priced items were 25 percent off, and sale items were an additional 20 percent off. Elevation owner Tanis Henderson’s daughter also set up a booth at the pop-up shop, with her jewelry brand called Grace. “I’m super grateful to be in such a supportive community, said Henderson, “and of course, we would not be a business if it weren’t for our clients, who feel like family. Henderson commented on the evolution and development of Vermilion, with new and successful local businesses throughout Main Street and the rest of the town. Staff and students are excited that we will be continuing to practice our virtues throughout this school year. Each month at Vermilion Elementary School we focus on a different virtue and try to inspire our students to practice them in their day to day life. When a student is spotted by a staff member or another student practicing any of the virtues we focus on, they will receive an entry for a monthly draw. At each of our assemblies, starting in October, one virtue practicing student will be drawn to win a prize. We are very excited to create a culture of character within our school by learning about and practicing virtues such as respect, compassion, perseverance, and responsibility to name a few. Our September virtue is Goal Setting. With all the restrictions, the Learn-

Our school participates in the Accelerated Reader (AR) program for Grades 2-6. Most of our book collection is labelled according to the reading levels. This will help students choose books to complete quizzes and earn points and prizes and to do fun activities. If you have a book at home and want to know if it is an AR book, you can go to AR Book Finder and input the book title, or ISBN number, to retrieve the quiz if there is one. All of these websites are located at the VES website. Meet The Council: Implementing Management Practices That Pay Off

BCRC

Submitted

The following is part two in a series to introduce you to this group of innovative thinkers that set BCRC’s direction by sharing practices, strategies, or technologies that they have integrated into their own operations. Conditions and circumstances across the country may vary but these three beef producers have found value in adjusting common management practices to work successfully on their operation. Utilizing Different Calving Seasons Fred Lozeman – Alberta Fred and his family own and operate a mixed farm near Claresholm, Alberta at the base of the Porcupine Hills. Along with a spring and fall calving herd they operate a feedlot, finishing their own calves, as well as around 1,500 head of purchased cattle. They also grow most of the feed required for the feedlot and cow-calf operation. The spring calving herd is managed very extensively. They combine cattle with a neighbour who manages the whole herd on pasture in the Porcupine Hills. The fall calving herd is managed at home on pasture along with oat-based swaths and corn grazing. If needed, a total mixed ration (TMR) supplement is provided which is possible since these cows are located near the yard site. Fred does point out that managing a fall calving herd is much more hands on but it has worked for them as it allows them to split their labour as well as have animals finished in March and April which gives them access to a different market. Lozeman notes that the body condition of the fall calving herd does seem to fluctuate more than the spring herd. Since cows are often on green lush pasture when they aren’t supporting a calf, Fred finds that they gain weight easily but because they are

in calf and lactating during the cold winter months they often lose condition during that time period. He attributes these seasonal changes in condition to the reason that the cows in the fall calving herd on average get culled sooner than those in the spring calving herd. Having the ability to follow calves all the way through to the packer has provided Fred with some unique opportunities to base his cow herd culling decisions. When carcass reports are received, each animal is ranked in order of gross revenue (a combination of carcass weight, yield and quality) and that ranking is attributed to the cow. The cow receives a ranking based on the sum of all of her calves. For example, if a cow has had three calves that were ranked number 8, number 22, and number 10 in their respective carcass groups, the cow would be assigned an average score of 13.3. The lower the score for the cow, the higher they rank. Fred then uses this information to make culling decisions. If a cow in the spring calving herd is in the top 25% of the herd but comes up open, she might be moved to the fall calving herd based on her age and past performance. But a cow that is open and in the bottom 25% would simply be culled. Fred comes at his operation with a unique perspective. He earned his PhD at the University of Oxford in diabetes research and worked as a scientist in a Nobel Prize-winning lab at the University of Washington. This education and unique experience allow him to look at new technologies and current research with a bit of a different view, and to see their operation in a different light when making management decisions. Extending the Grazing Season Michael Spratt – Saskatchewan Being able to extend the grazing season

and keep cows out on pasture longer has been beneficial for Michael Spratt. Spratt, along with his family, owns and operates a 6,000 acre grain farm and 140 head seedstock Maine Anjou herd near Melfort, Saskatchewan. They also background their own calves as well as do some custom backgrounding. The area where Spratt farms is very fertile with highly productive land resulting in high land prices, so making the best use out of the land is a priority. Crops like corn are very high risk due to the short growing window and limited heat units available in this part of the province. This is also a high moisture area meaning that crops grow very well but it can be challenging to get them put up dry. For these reasons, the family relies on swath and residue grazing to keep cows out on pasture as long as possible. For over 20 years they have been swath grazing and refining their system. Since the Spratts also grain farm, swath grazing crops are usually selected based on what seed is left over after the grain crops have been planted. They have found that oats and barley grow best in their location and provide a high-quality feed source. In late October, Michael brings cows in from summer pastures and weans the calves. The cows are then turned out onto a stubble field to graze until the ground is frozen and then will be moved to the swath grazing. Since they calve in February cows are in their third trimester when swath grazing, but they have found that the feed is usually able to meet the cows’ high nutrient demands. Michael feed tests his swath grazing for nitrates and quality to ensure that it can meet the needs of the cow herd. They have also found that cows seem to have less trouble calving and have attributed some of that to their fitness level due to them having

the space to walk around in the extended grazing system. Swath grazing cows are pastured near the yard site and are given access to about a week to ten days worth of feed at a time using cross fencing. Since cows are located near the yard they have access to water but Michael says that if they have a lot of fluffy, loose snow some of the cows will choose to just eat snow and don’t come down to the yard site for water. By the end of December, they like to move the cows off of the swath grazing and into the drylot so they are closer to home for calving. When it comes to the drylot side of their operation Michael says that he would not want to do it without their feed wagon. Having a feed wagon with a scale allows them to accurately formulate rations as well as know exactly how much feed each pen is getting. Both backgrounding cattle and cows close to calving get a total mixed ration (TMR) that is balanced for their specific nutritional needs.
