Cheering On Frontline Workers

Joining people around the world, residents at The Maples Condos in Vermilion have been on their balconies at 7 p.m. daily since March 24, cheering on frontline workers for their efforts to combat COVID-19.

Participant, Lil Wilson said, “The people here are so happy to show their appreciation and cheer on health care workers, paramedics, RCMP, and front line staff

at grocery, pharmacy, and gas stations.

They are working very hard and it is so important to keep our economy going in some way, and keep people supplied with the products they need.”

She noted that Ontario, Quebec, Saskatchewan and Alberta have closed all unnecessary businesses. With regulations becoming more restrictive, she went on to say that they were also showing their appreciation to all of those who were staying in 14 days after returning

home, because they had heard of many who were not.

“We want to show appreciation to all of those putting their lives at risk on the front lines. I worked in a hospital for years and it can be pretty tough when you have a siege of things going on; moving beds, and being masked up, having emergencies come and go. Hopefully it will end.

I remember going through the Polio epidemic and it took a long time for them to find something to help it. I remember my

poor mom stuck out on the farm because only one person from each family was permitted to go to town to do any shopping. At that time (in the 1940’s) my mom didn’t drive. There are some people living in our community who survived Polio, and many in the area died,” said Wilson.

Community members have responded to the recent cheers by waving in return.

According to CAO and Returning Officer, George Rogers, Vermilion was not

alone and other communities were facing similar circumstances. In light of the news, he contacted each of the six nominees and said, “I would encourage you to consider your options, and if you are so inclined, please consider running in the General Election in 2021.”

In his letter of response addressing Mayor Caroline McAuley, Minister Kelechi (Kaycee) Madu said, “I am pleased we were able to work together to find an effective solution, which meets the operational requirements of your municipality and ensures the well-being of Albertans.”

Where do we stand? That is my biggest question. Ever y day when I go to work I look around and our town resembles a scene from a movie, the only thing missing is the boards on business windows. The eerie quietness is sometimes a little too eerie. I never thought I would see the day when half our town is closed and the other half that is still offering their services is doing so behind closed doors. I never thought I would feel fear to go to grocery store or to work. I never thought I would see the day that I would not be able to go visit my family because it isn’t safe to do so. I never thought I would see the day the world was held captive by an invisible enemy. As you can see there are

a few “I never thought I would see” in this paragraph and for me it raises the question ‘Where Do We Stand?”

The world has been thrown into unprecedented times with a novel virus spreading like wildfire. Every day there are new cases and new deaths, and while it appears to be staying away from our area I’m not sure how much we actually know about the status of this virus. It has been said that we do not have any cases in Vermilion, but how do we know that for sure? The medical officers on the news who provide updates on a daily basis say that some do not present with symptoms and from my understanding it is always said that if you start showing symptoms you should just self-isolate and only go to the hospital or care centres if absolutely needed, so how do we know there are no cases? There could be, but we just don’t know about them because they are not documented.

What happens if someone in our area is diagnosed, would we be informed and do we have the resources in our hospital to treat it?

I was posed the question the other day whether we as citizens are just in panic mode and overreacting? And my response in a nutshell and to be frank was “Yes we are panicked and no we are not overreacting.” Fear is the one thing, which I hope, will keep people doing what needs to be done!! if we relax for even a minute we could easily end up like other towns and cities with numerous cases on our hands. We have to think about our neighbour and our loved ones. Vermilion has a large elderly population, Vermilion has residents who have compromised immune systems, Vermilion has children and pregnant moms to be who are considered high risk and if we don’t all work together they are at risk. This virus does not care who you are and does

The words of the day are “Stay home”.

It is important for us to change many of our habits. Those that are used to going to the grocery store every day or every few days, need to now plan a menu to have supplies for a least two or more weeks. For those that have never done a menu plan, it is easy to do on a few sheets of paper. To start, decide on breakfasts for two weeks, compare what you will need with what you have in your pantry, and write the missing items down on your shopping list. Do this for lunch (dinner) and supper. You now have an easy to execute plan. Keep in mind that in a two-week plan, you will want to plan to use the more perishable fresh ingredients at the beginning of the plan, and the less perishable fresh ingredients at the end. For example lettuce is more

perishable and carrots are less perishable.

If apples and oranges are kept in the fridge, they will last longer. Frozen fruits have very similar amounts of all the nutrients that fresh do. Milk can be frozen, but cream will curdle more after being frozen. Milk can also be purchased in canned or powdered form for use in cooking or coffee. We may have to adjust our standard of living, make less trips to the grocery store and make do with what we have in order to protect our community, our families and ourselves.

Currently dentists, hair dressers, and those that work in close contact, have their businesses shut down. The dine in portions of restaurants are closed. Non essential retail businesses were ordered shut on Friday, with only online or curbside pickup being allowed. Economically, the country is in ruins and the threat to our health care system is very real.

Submitted I am wondering just what the state of preparedness Vermilion is in re: the Corona virus pandemic.

I read a letter in The Voice from the radiologists of Alberta and information about how businesses are temporarily closed and a by-election is postponed and all sor ts of things about social distancing and self-isolation.

And there’s a sandwich board outside the clinic saying if you have symptoms to call 811.

What nobody seems to know is: 1. Does the hospital have any ventilators?

2. Do the hospital workers have Personal Protection Equipment?

3. Where does one have to go to get tested for the virus?

4. How long would one have to wait for a test result?

5. If it’s a positive result, can the Vermilion hospital handle the patient or is it an automatic ride to Edmonton or some other facility?

In short, I would like to think the Town is taking some sort of responsibility in informing the public about its ability (or lack of same) to care for its citizens.

Simply telling everybody about office hours being curtailed doesn’t do the trick.

I would like to see a detailed status summary in The Voice.

With yeast shortages, here is another yeast free recipe. It is for dinner rolls that use mayonnaise and other basic ingredients. It is more like a biscuit, and delicious hot, and buttered. It is easy to make with only one bowl.

Mayo Dinner Rolls 2 1/2 cups flour, plus additional 2 1/2 teaspoons baking powder 1/2 teaspoon salt 1 1/4 cup milk 1/3 cup mayonnaise Grease 12 cups in a muffin tin. In a bowl combine all the dry ingredients, add the mayonnaise and the milk and stir, until all the ingredients are combined. Allow to set for 15 -39 minutes. Preheat oven to 375

The First School

It was on a beautiful spring day in May of 1910 when a group of people came together for the greater good of the residents and children of the area.

It was in that month and year that the Uneeda School District was formed with A.G. Lee serving as the very first secretary for the organization.

The board did not waste any time in the building of the new school and there is a report of John Clarke building the chimney into the school in -40 degree weather in the middle of December. He did a good job though, as that chimney lasted for many years.

One of the board members of the early school district was an Ar thur Haddon, who lived just north of the school and was the first person to file a homestead south of the Blackfoot Hills.

Uneeda was one of the first schools in the entire area and as a result, children from many districts throughout the area came to the school.

The need for a school may have been exemplified by the name itself.

According to legend, the district was called McDonaldville at one point after the McDonaldville Post Office. At an organizational meeting for the school though, it is said one man stood up and said “you need a school. Well let’s organize a school district”. Someone else then stood up and said, “ Yes, and there’s the name for it, Uneeda

School.”

True or not, it makes for a great story.

The Uneeda School District was not just about education, it also provided a form of government to residents. One early settler to the area was Walter Collins, who came and homesteaded on a flat area near a lake. He bragged that he had the most level land in the country. Of course, when spring came he quickly found his entire homestead was now under the lake.

Fires were always a danger in the district and sometimes those fires were started by children. A Miss Henson, the school teacher, relates about one prairie fire.

“I blamed it on a cigarette from a passing motorist. It was a windy day and the grass was dr y. Only by the

grace of God and the lake were we able to stop it. All the men were at a sale in Moyerton. By the time Mr. and Mrs. Henry got there, we had it out. I never knew until I came back in 1933 that the boys had set it.”

The school served as a focal point for the area. Dances were held many times and one story in the Lloydminster Times relates that on Feb. 14, a dance was held with 200 people present and a collection of $10 was put together.

The school would operate for 32 years in total, finally closing its doors for good in 1942.

As the COVID-19 situation continues to evolve in Alber ta, so too do our response measures and supports across the Central Zone. We must ensure we have the capacity to handle the anticipated surge in patients with COVID-19, and to do that means we will have to change the way we do some things.

Facilities have begun implementing screening for anyone coming to the site, be it to receive care, to visit a patient or to work. We are also restricting visitors to help prevent the spread of COVID-19.

We must also create capacity in our

hospitals to meet the increased acute care demands resulting from COVID19. Efforts to create capacity include the postponement of all scheduled and elective surgeries, which enables us to not only create and repurpose care spaces, but redeploy frontline staff and resources to other areas as well. We are also looking at options like moving seniors out of hospitals and into more appropriate care settings in the community, or discharging those who are most stable to return home with enhanced supports. Consolidation of specialized services to specific sites to protect vulnerable patients, and redeploying frontline staff and resources to

We anticipate there will be labour challenges, as staff are forced to selfisolate, or need to stay home to look after children and loved ones. And that’s understandable. This will be an ongoing challenge across the system, and it means that difficult decisions have to be made when it comes to how we deliver services. Services will need to be offered in different ways, such as over the phone, through telehealth, or with limited hours.

We recognize that these are difficult, stressful times and that any change in ser vice may be concerning. Our number one priority is protecting the health of Albertans, and in this extraordinary situation, we must take significant steps to do so.

Those in need of urgent, emergency care will continue to receive it.

Yes, all healthcare workers have the appropriate Personal Protective Equipment. Alberta Health Services (AHS) currently has a sufficient inventory of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) equipment for staff including gloves, masks, isolation gowns, N95 respirators, goggles, and face shields. In addition, we are also monitoring stock levels of coveralls, surgeon hoods, disinfectant wipes, and hand sanitizers.

AHS was prepared in advance and had been working to ensure we have a large supply of PPE when we needed them.

AHS would like to stress that there is no immediate shortage of supply items – every order is being filled. AHS is working with the Government of Alberta and the federal government to procure additional supplies to continue to build its inventory.

A new approach to testing for COVID-19 was implemented in Alberta on March 23, and prioritizes groups at

highest risk of local exposure, as well as at-risk populations. As of March 23, travellers who returned to Alberta from outside of Canada after March 12, and have mild symptoms are no longer being tested for COVID-19. Instead, the same advice applied to all Albertans applies to them - self-isolate at home and away from others.

T h i s c h a n g e i s e f f e c t i ve g o i n g forward, so anyone who had already been told by Health Link that they’ll be tested will still get tested. Staf f are working to provide test results as quickly as possible. Positive COVID-19 test results are being prioritized at this time in the interest of public health.

Currently there are three assessment centres established in the Central Zone for COVID-19 testing – in Red Deer, Camrose and Lloydminster. Of course testing takes place through a referral process, and AHS determines the most appropriate location for the testing, based on demand and resources in any given community. We do continue to provide testing in - home, where needed, to ensure testing is completed rapidly for those who are eligible. A public health nurse completes in-home testing – this is not a self-testing option.

There is no self-testing for COVID-19.

To protect patient confidentiality, we do not break down cases further than the data available on the map, which shows confirmed cases by geographic area. According to Alber ta.ca AHS Central Zone had 43 confirmed COVID19 cases as of March 26. March 26, 2020 COVID-19 Update

Yesterday, the Federal and Saskatchewan governments made impor tant COVID-19-related announcements that will impact employers and employees.

We set out a summary of these changes as follows in our ninth COVID-19 update.

Saskatchewan Expands Workplace Closures to All Non-Essential Businesses The Saskatchewan government has announced, effective today, Thursday March 26, 2020, the closure of all workplaces deemed non-essential. A list of the businesses that may remain open is set out here: https://www.documentcloud. org/documents/6819048-Critical-PublicServices-to-Address-COVID-19-and. html.

The government also announced all public gatherings in Saskatchewan will be limited to 10 people, down from a previous limit of 25 people.

We will provide more updates when further information is released.

Employee Access to Emergency Funds

The Federal government established the Canada Emergency Response Benefit (CERB). This benefit provides $2,000 a month for up to four months for workers who lose their income as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. The CERB is designed to assist workers, whether eligible for Employment Insurance or not, who have lost their job, have been laid off, are sick, quarantined, or taking care of someone who is sick with COVID-19. It also assists working parents who must stay home without pay to care for children who are sick or at home because of school and daycare closures. The CERB applies to wage earners, as well as contract workers and self-employed individuals who would not otherwise be eligible for Employment Insurance.

The CERB replaces the previously announced Emergency Care Benefit and Emergency Support Benefit, which we detailed in our fifth update. It is expected the portal for accessing the CERB will be available in early April. CERB payments are expected to be made within 10 days

It is unclear how the CERB may affect current or planned Supplemental Unemployment Benefits and Work Share programs. Neuman Thompson intends to address these and other issues arising from the legislation in a future update.

The new, federal legislation also amends the Income Tax Act to provide eligible employers with a wage subsidy for the period between March 18, 2020 and June 19, 2020. It also amends the Canada Labour Code (applicable only to employers and employees in federally regulated industries such as: interprovincial transportation, grain handling, banking, and telecommunications) to allow for medical leaves and leaves for Compas-

sionate Care and Critical Illness without the need for the employee to provide a certificate from a health care practitioner. It also provides federally governed employees with up to 16 weeks of job protected leave related to quarantine. For those employees, pension, health and disability benefits and seniority continue to accumulate during the leave.

SERVING YOU Canada Safety Council Encourages Proactivity In COVID-19 Containment Efforts

It seems as though almost overnight the novel Coronavirus COVID-19 has changed the world. Spread containment efforts have led to restrictions in travel, public events and social gatherings of all kinds. It has created closures of restaurants, schools, sports events and theatre productions and, as the spread extends, restrictions deepen and become more defined and entrenched.

But there is good to be seen in every difficult situation and, although this virus knows no boundaries or borders, it has most certainly brought the world together in a unified approach to meeting this challenge head-on.

At the core of the issue is public safety.

While we may be inconvenienced by changes to routine and ever y thing we rely on in our daily lives, the steps we take now will ultimately define the extent of the spread and the impact to the health of people in Canada and around the world. With this in mind, the Canada Safety Council fully supports the direction being provided by federal government and public health officials

as well as the measures being taken

by Canadian industries, organizations and individuals in preventing the spread of the virus, which has been declared a pandemic by the World Health Organization <mailto:https://www.who.int/ emergencies/diseases/novel-coronavirus-2019>.

The CSC has also taken steps to limit spread in restricting access to the office, in relying on virtual meetings and in enabling remote work arrangements that ensure continuation of services from the contained environment of home.

“At times like these, there’s a real need - an imperative - to prioritize the health and safety of the communities we work and live in and more specifically each other,” said Gareth Jones, President and CEO of the Canada Safety Council. “Coronavirus is highly communicable and has demonstrated its lethal potential particularly to the elderly and people with comorbidities and compromised immune systems around the world. And in the absence of a vaccine to immunize the population perhaps we should behave as though everyone

around us has the virus. Even those in good health who are seemingly unaffected should be mindful of habits so we don’t port the virus and infect others.”

Frequent hand-washing is one of the best ways to be diligent and proactive in curbing spread. Regular washing with soap or an alcohol-based hand rub will kill viruses that you may have picked up through contacting a public surface.

Social distancing is also an effective mitigating practice - by maintaining a minimum of one metre between yourself and anyone who is coughing or sneezing, you lessen the likelihood of breathing in the virus.

Respiratory viruses, including COVID19, can be transmitted by touch. This makes it important, too, to avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. These are all potential points of entry for the virus.

If you feel ill If you’re experiencing fever, coughing or difficulty breathing, don’t take any unnecessary risks. Work from home if you’re able, and call your local public health authority. Many provinces have set up an 811 information line, including British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatch-

ewan, Quebec, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, Newfoundland and Labrador and Yukon.

Virtual care may be a good first step in assessing your symptoms before taking action.

Do not visit the emergency department at the hospital unless you are ex p er i e n c in g severe s h or t n e s s of breath. You risk putting other patients at risk of contracting the virus. You should also phone ahead if you intend on speaking with your doctor - do not s h ow u p u n a n n o u n c e d a n d u n expected.

Self-isolation is also an effective way to limit the spread of the virus.

This should include staying home, limiting the number of visitors and, if possible, containing yourself to a separate room from any housemates.

Prevention is most effective when it’s proactive. Don’t wait until you start exhibiting symptoms to take precautions. Wash your hands, avoid touching your mouth, nose and eyes, maintain social distancing and remember to look out for each other as we continue global efforts to contain this virus.

Craft & Puzzle Room / Valley Lodge Deck Projects

Vermilion & District Housing Foundation Submitted

At Vermilion & District Housing Foundation, we are pleased to announce the completion of our Craft & Puzzle Room and our new oversized Outdoor Deck.

These two renovation projects were completed on time and on budget under the direction of our Facility Manager Mr. Ryan Leahy. As with so many other projects our Facility Manager fulfilled our commitment to hire local contractors and purchased available building supplies from local businesses.

We would like to express our thanks to Vermilion Masonic Temple #24 and Order of the Eastern Star #22 for sponsoring the Craft & Puzzle Room. This special project will not be possible without their generous donation. We also want to say a big thank you to The Snelgrove Family and The Walden and Dorothy Westman Family for their contribution, sponsoring the Valley Lodge Outdoor Deck Project.

sewing corner, library and a variety of tables for social gatherings, boardroom activities, painting and puzzle building where residents can gather together. The Craft & Puzzle Room has a beautiful and modern décor with large floor to ceiling windows that overlook our new oversized deck and courtyard.

Vermilion Valley Lodge Outdoor Deck Project was an ambitious project, proudly designed by our Facility Manager, Ryan Leahy. The oversized outdoor deck designed as a deck and boardwalk connecting our newly constructed Wing-B to the new renovated Craft & Puzzle Room (Sunroom), and wraps around the existing Wing-E. The deck is large will have enough space to accommodate all of our residents at one time with ample built-in bench seating areas. The Lodge residents are excited and looking forward to enjoying the deck. As of March 24, we have officially opened the deck to our residents to step out and take in the sunshine and enjoy the fresh air in small groups.

Pharmacy Services During The COVID-19 Pandemic

March 26, - Your pharmacy team provides an essential service and is fully committed to helping you during this unprecedented time of COVID-19 pandemic. Pharmacy teams want to ensure that you have access to the right information to make good decisions about your health, including how to prevent the spread of COVID-19, and what to do if you start feeling ill. Pharmacy teams want to make sure that everyone has access to the medications they need.

Demand for pharmacy services is high! To ensure that you, your family, and your community continue to get the care you need from your pharmacy team, we all need to work together. Our college is engaged with the Chief Medical Officer of Health and her team and are working to support her direction as the status of COVID-19 changes daily.

What do I need to know and what do I need to do?

• DO NOT go to your pharmacy if you are feeling ill, particularly if you have flu-like symptoms including fever, cough, or shortness of breath.

Complete a self-assessment using the tool provided by Alberta Health

Services and, if appropriate, call 811.

• DO call ahead, if you have questions for your pharmacist or require medications to be refilled. Pharmacists can provide an assessment of your needs over the phone. As demand is high, this will allow your pharmacy team to prepare your prescriptions in advance so that you spend a minimum amount of time at your pharmacy.

• DO discuss how you are feeling with your pharmacist or pharmacy technician. If you are experiencing flu-like symptoms or if you are self-isolating, your pharmacy may be able to arrange to have your medications delivered to you.

• DO practice social distancing. If you must go to your pharmacy, respect the distance between you and other individuals at the pharmacy. Try to maintain two (2) meters between you and other individuals at all times.

Most importantly, practice this at the pharmacy counter. Allow space between you and your pharmacy team members, and provide additional space so that a degree of confidentiality can be respected for patients in front of you when they are engaging with their pharmacy team member.

• DO practice good hand hygiene.

Wash your hands regularly with soap and water for at least 20 seconds each time.

• DO keep you and your family informed by regularly checking on new information for the public on the Alberta Health Services webpage.

What do I do if my pharmacy temporarily closes or if I cannot access my pharmacy?

For various reasons, some pharmacies might need to close during the COVID-19 pandemic or shorten their hours. However, your medication needs can still be met.

If your pharmacy closes temporarily, we have requested that signage be posted on the pharmacy entrance to inform you about the closure, including contact information to assist you access alternate care. Pharmacies that temporarily close have been encouraged to leave a telephone message that will inform you about the closure, it’s duration, the location of the nearest licensed pharmacy, and other information to assist you access pharmacy services during the closure period.

In single-pharmacy communities, alternate arrangements for patient care

must be made with local prescribers or pharmacies in nearby communities.

If you visit a new pharmacy, pharmacy staff will not have access to your regular pharmacy record, so a new assessment of your health and related medication needs will be completed. The pharmacist may ask about your health history, current health status, current drug therapy, and then check your electronic health record to support them in making an informed decision about your drug therapy. They will know whether they can issue a prescription to continue your therapy or if they need to consult with your doctor or other health professional. The bottom line is that they will want to make an informed decision to ensure you receive the medications that are most appropriate for you, in as timely a manner as possible.

We know that this time is hard for you and your family. Your pharmacy team is prepared and committed to support your health and medication needs. Your experience may be a little different during the pandemic but be assured that your pharmacy team is doing their best to meet your needs and the overall medication needs of your community.

Submitted March 25, - Ottawa, ON - The Honourable Andrew Scheer, Leader of Canada’s Conservatives and of the Official Opposition, issued the following statement: “Since the beginning of this crisis, Conservatives have been focused on Canadians and getting them the support they desperately need. We recognize that these are unprecedented times and that urgent action is needed. Almost a million Canadians have already been laid off, stores and restaurants have been told to close their doors, and Canadians have been told to stay at home. We also know that this crisis has hit our economy hard and that the months to come will be difficult.

“That is why Conser vatives have been flexible in our approach, while also continuing to ensure government oversight.

“When we agreed to the extraordinary suspension of Parliament, Conservatives

insisted that the government be subject to substantial accountability measures including that the Auditor General would audit any new spending, that parliamentary committees would be able to review all of that spending when Parliament resumes, that parliamentary committees could be recalled at any time, and that the government must immediately inform the Opposition of any spending and make it public within seven days.

“We also agreed to bring back the House of Commons this week with only a small number of Members present. We were prepared to quickly pass the measures that the Prime Minister had announced to date. What we were not prepared for was the government’s attempted undemocratic power grab.

“The Liberals shamefully tried to use a public health crisis to give themselves the powers to raise taxes, debt and spending without parliamentary approval until January 1, 2022. But after hours of

negotiation, the government has backed down.

“Conser vatives have secured the following concessions: We demanded that the government remove the section that would have allowed them to raise taxes without parliamentary approval. They agreed.

We demanded that the government walk back their unlimited spending powers and that special warrants expire on June 23, 2020 instead of September 30, 2020. They agreed.

We demanded that the government include explicit reference to putting taxpayers’ rights first. They agreed.

We demanded that the government put sunset clauses in their legislation.

They agreed.

We demanded that the government be accountable to Parliament through regular reports to the House of Commons Health and Finance committees and that the Finance Committee have the right

to recall Parliament if we identify any abuses. They agreed.

“Our effective Opposition has also gotten the government to reverse course on other policies.

“Conservatives called for stronger action to protect our borders and the government responded. We asked about the impact of the border closure on the temporary foreign worker and seasonal agricultural worker programs and the government made exemptions.

We called on the government to stop the flow of illegal border crossers into Canada, particularly at Roxham Road, and the government listened.

“We will continue to use all of the tools available to us to hold the government to account. And we will continue to use our strengthened Opposition to ask tough questions on behalf of Canadians and put forward constructive solutions to ensure that no one falls through the cracks.”

FCC Lending Capacity Increases By $5B To Alleviate Industry Financial Pressure

Regina, Saskatchewan, March 23, 2020 – Farm Credit Canada (FCC) has received an enhancement to its capital base that will allow for an additional $5 billion in lending capacity, MarieClaude Bibeau, minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada announced today.

Minister Bibeau’s announcement follows Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s announcement earlier today outlining more details on the Government of Canada’s plan to support the economy during the COVID -19 pandemic. In that announcement, the government made a solid commitment to the agriculture and food industr y to ensure producers, agribusinesses and food processors continue to have access to necessary capital at this challenging time.

“Farmers and producers work hard to put food on tables across our country, and they should not have to worry about being able to afford their loan payments or having enough money to support their own families,” the Prime Minister said. “We are taking action now to give them more flexibility to meet the challenges ahead.”

“Like many Canadians, I am truly grateful for our farmers and food business owner s and employees, who continue working hard so we all have q u a li t y fo o d o n o ur g r o c er y s tore

s helves an d k itc hen t a b les. T heir continued work is essential to our plan to manage COVID-19,” Minister Bibeau said. “The measures announced today will provide farmers and food producers across the countr y with important financial flexibility they will need during these challenging times.”

Hoffort adds that FCC will use its resources to find solutions that offer the best chance for recover y going f o r wa r d s o t h e i n d u s t r y e m e r g e s stronger. Initially, the focus will be on assisting the industry in addressing cash flow challenges so that businesses can remain focused on busi-

ness- critical functions rather than worrying about how to access funds to keep operating through this difficult time.

“Supporting the industr y will also take strong collaboration bet ween banks, credit unions, FCC and other financial institutions,” said Hof for t. “ FCC has ser ve d as a stro ng an d stable industr y presence for more than 60 years, and this current situation is no different. We will be working in partnership with other financial providers to offer the solutions needed by the agriculture and food industry to take on the challenges ahead.”

As part of its ongoing support efforts, FCC also is asking existing customers who have cash flow or other financial concerns to contact the organization to discuss alternatives, such as loan payment deferrals and products available to assist with cash flow needs.

“Each business’ financial situation is unique, so there may be a combination of options considered,” Hoffort said. “The bottom line is that FCC is being supported by our shareholder

The Cost Benefit Of Using Vaccines In Beef Cattle

Vac c ination is a proven tool for disease prevention. Vaccination recommendations vary by region and by farm as the environment, production, and management practices can increase or decrease the amount of risk cattle are exposed to. Disease exposure occurs in numerous places including community pastures, fence line contact with neighbouring cattle, auction markets, and breeding cattle, such as bulls, purchased from other herds. However, vaccinating breeding females for reproductive disease and calves for respiratory disease are recommended practices across Canada. A vaccination program should be developed in consultation with a veterinarian who can determine which ones are necessary for your area.

In western Canada, one in ten producers surveyed are not vaccinating their cows for infectious bovine rhinotracheitis (IBR) and bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVD) (Waldner et al., 2019) and more than a quarter of producers do not vaccinate cows for other reproductive diseases (Beef Cattle Research Council, 2019). One third of Ontario producers do not vaccinate their cows for BVD and far fewer vaccinate for other reproductive diseases. In Atlantic Canada, 27% of producers reported not administering general vaccinations. This leaves herds vulnerable.

Why Vaccinate for BVD?When a cow is infected with BVD in early pregnancy, the offspring may be born persistently

infected (PI). PI animals are generally considered to be the primary source for transmission of the virus.

BVD i nfe c t i o n c a n l e ad to p o or conception rates and both BVD and IBR can cause abor tions in cat tle.

Blood tests show exposure to these diseases is common in unvaccinated herds. There is evidence from several experimental trials that these vaccines are effective. When multiple studies are analyzed, the outcome shows that on average there is an 85% decrease in fetal infection, 45% decrease in abortions and a 5% increase in pregnancy rates in BVD-vaccinated herds. Field studies in western Canada have shown improvement in pregnancy rates and a decrease in abortion rates for vaccinated cows compared to unvaccinated cows on community pastures.

In the U.S., total annual losses have been estimated at $20 million for every million calves when modeling for lowvirulent BVD strains and $57 million when modeling for a high-virulent BVD strain (Houe, 1999). If we take Canada’s breeding herd at 3.9 million beef cows, estimated BVD losses here would be in the range of $78 and $220 million (Clarke, 2014).

The Cost Benefit of BVD Vaccinations tool allows producers to input their herd size, expected price, animal weights, cost of vaccine and labour to see the potential savings from vaccinating cattle for BVD specifically from changes in reproductive performance caused by abortions.

Why Vaccinate for BRD?

Bovine respiratory disease (BRD) is one of the costliest health issues facing the beef industry today. While a lot of research on BRD has been focused at the feedlot stage, the disease is also the most common cause of death for nursing calves older than three weeks.

BRD can impact any producer, including those who retain ownership of their calves to background, feed, or finish cattle.

Research by USDA ARS Meat Animal Researc h Center that trac ke d the annual incidence of BRD in pre-weaned calves over a 20-year period found that the annual incidence varied from a low of 3% to a high of 24% with an overall annual average of 11%. On average, the mortality rate of calves suffering from pre-weaning BRD was 13%.

Once calves are affected by BRD, there are both immediate and longlasting effects on performance. Studies have shown that calves challenged

by BRD could weigh up to 36 pounds less at weaning than their healthy herd mates (Wittum and Perino, 1995).

Vaccinating for BRD can help producers manage the disease, enhance animal welfare and reduce the need for antibiotics whether they are backgrounding or finishing a few cattle of their own, retaining ownership of their calves for a longer period of time, or simply wanting to create a reputation for supplying quality calves. While it may seem like the main beneficiary of BRD vaccines are feedlots purchasing vaccinated calves, other segments benefit as well.

The Cost-Benefit of Feeding BRD Vaccinated Calves tool allows producers to input their own numbers of feeder cattle purchased (or retained), feeder and fed price, weight, cost of gain, days on feed and treatment cost to calculate and compare the expense of feeding calves that have not been vaccinated for BRD. The tool itemizes costs including death loss, treatment costs, and performance losses due to lower average daily gain and lower quality grades, that arise from feeding calves that were not vaccinated for BRD. This calculator can help determine the potential premium that could be paid for BRD-vaccinated calves, assuming the vaccines are effective.

Students Adapt And Overcome For Beef Day

March 26, - Beef Day 2020 was a success, despite students facing unprecedented challenges during the final weeks leading up to the annual event.

Beef Day gives students with the Student-Managed Farm – Powered by New Holland (SMF) purebred beef, commercial beef and livestock research units the opportunity to gain first-hand knowledge when it comes to weaning, preparing, marketing and selling cat tle. In the past, this event brought farmers, ranchers, industry representatives and students together for a dinner and live auction.

This year’s sale wasn’t like previo u s ye a r s . O n e w e e k b e f o r e t h e event, which took place on March 20, the Government of Alberta cautioned against holding events with more than 50 people in an ef for t to slow the spread of COVID-19, putting the sale in jeopardy.

“Preparing for Beef Day this year was incredibly stressful,” Robert Geis, general manager of the SMF purebred beef unit, says. “At the beginning of the year, we were given this herd and were responsible for weaning the calves and getting them ready for the Beef Day sale. Marketing them was tough because, with COVID-19, people didn’t want to come out to actually look at them.”

their options to see whether having Beef Day was going to work at all. “ We sat down and thought about our different options,” he says. “We could tr y to sell the c at tle private treaty, which is always difficult when you’re just coming in off the cuff. But we thought about how we already had everything lined up to go through with Beef Day, and after consulting with other producers in the industr y, we decided to hold the sale online.”

Moving online itself wasn’t a daunting prospect, because online bids always ran in conjunction with the live auction and the infrastructure for it was already set up. The main concerns they had, according to Geis, was that people wouldn’t be willing to spend money in such a delicate economic environment and that some of their potential customers weren’t comfortable with the online technology. The students added the ability to make phone bids to help mitigate that.

Austin Partington, Beef Day staff advisor, is incredibly impressed with how well they handled the dif ficult circumstances of the sale.

“Even though most of them returned home, they were still engaged and made phone calls to potential bidders to stir up interest. Three students stayed at the college to make sure everything went according to plan. It was such a team success,” Partington says. “We are so thankful for the bidders and buyers working with us to make this sale such a success.”

In total, the students put 14 Black

Angus bulls, six Black Angus replacement heifers, four commercial Angus breds and three Pens Simmental x Angus replacement heifer s up for auction. At the end of the day, the bulls went for an average of $4,400, t h e p u r e b r e d h e i fe r s we n t fo r a n average of $4,280, the commercial replacement heifers averaged $1,500 and the research-bred heifers averaged $2,050. That’s higher than average for the college.

“It went amazingly well,” Geis says.

“We were ecstatic with how it turned out. There are so many producers out there who helped the college out, which is amazing. This entire experience has been really eye-opening.

The marketing tactics I’ve learned, the people skills that I’ve picked up – it’s great for the students to learn this way. When I’m done at Lakeland, I’m going to go back home and use these skills on the farm. It ’s such a valuable hand-in-glove experience to go through.”
