Hundreds of students visited Lakeland College as they held an Open House at both Lloydminster and Vermilion campuses on October 25 - 26.

Prospective students had the opportunity to tour the College and experience demonstrations at the farm, in different trades, and at the Emergency Training Centre.

“The students have been really engaged! Some have never welded or even seen it, and others wanted to see the facilities and program options,” said Instructor Doug Ewing during a hands-on welding demonstration for prospective students.

Current students led tours, and encouraged joining clubs or staying in dorms as a way of making new friends.

“The hands-on learning makes Lakeland College better than anywhere else in the country. I came here instead of staying in Ontario, and have made

more industry connections than I would have sitting in a classroom. There are opportunities that I may not have gotten at home on the farm by being able to work with sheep, and dairy,” Animal Science Technician students, Denver Bolton and Jenna Olson.

As part of the event, during the 16th Annual Career Fair in Vermilion, students enjoyed networking with industr y representatives and seeing what was available for universities and exchange programs; agriculture, oil industry, and interior design positions; as well as government, human, and health ser vices. Fourty-seven companies participated and one representative, John Stephen from Elanco Animal Health said, “For an employer this is a wonderful place to come. There are a lot of opportunities and careers of all sorts in agriculture including Ag Business and Animal Health. My message would be to get more people involved because agriculture has always been a very steady industry.”

The Vermilion River Flying Club hosted a Recurrent Training Seminar on October 26, at the Easter Star Hall in Vermilion.

Approximately 25 pilots gathered to refresh their knowledge, learn about new changes in the industry, and available services. Pilots were able to count the experience towards their two-year licence requirements. Representatives from NAV Canada, Transport Canada, a local instructor, and a local engineer gave presentations throughout the day.

One of the customs brought with them was the Jack-O-Lantern and this past weekend my family and I had fun carving our Jack-O-Lanterns for outside, and it was a lot of fun, with a bit of humour.

Halloween is Thursday and I can’t wait to see all the ghouls, goblins, monsters along with the princes and princesses run from door to door. I also enjoy when the parents dress up; they are often funnier than the children. Yay! I love Halloween.

Not all children will be accompanied by an adult so as a community, we will have to be very aware of our surroundings while we drive through the streets.

We also have to remember that even though we live in our safe little community, it is still very important to check all the treats our children receive before they eat anything. Also, we need to monitor the activities our children are involved in, because let’s face it when they get out with their friends, a night of fun can quickly turn into a night of destruction. Cars, houses, and buildings can and will be pranked or vandalized. Speak to your children regarding being respectful of the property of our community members, remind them on the consequence of their actions if they feel the need to succumb to peer pressure.

Healthy Drinks During The Holiday Season

With Christmas, Hanukkah and other major holidays around the corner, many people think about the food celebrations that may come with it, but not the drink choices. Rethinking your drink can be helpful since what you drink doesn’t help you feel full. This makes it easy to consume extra sugar from drinks and not even notice.

What is a healthy drink?

The 2019 Canad a’s Foo d Guide i n c l u d e s h e a l t hy d r i n k s . Wate r i s encouraged as the “drink of choice” to

keep you hydrated.

Other healthy drinks include unsweetened lower fat white milk, unsweetened fortified plant-based beverages such as soy beverage and almond beverage and unsweetened coffee and teas.

Since many celebrations include d r i n ks t h at h ave a h i g h er fat a n d sugar content, here are a few ways to c ut b ac k o n o n e or b ot h.

Choose black coffee, tea or herbal tea (with or without two-per-cent, one-percent or skim milk).

Instead of a sugary drink like pop or juice, add flavour to water with cucum-

ber slices, cranberries, sliced oranges or other fruit.

If you choose to enjoy regular pop or fruit punch, cut back on the amount by alternating each sugary drink with water.

For hot chocolate, you can try adding less chocolate mix or mixing ½ hot chocolate with ½ coffee or ½ steamed milk. For eggnog, you can try ½ egg nog/ ½ lower fat milk.

Alcohol I f yo u c h o o s e t o d r i n k a l c o h o l, remember alcohol adds extra calories to your diet, along with the potential for

other health risks and harms. There are lower risk drinking guidelines for Canadians which if followed can reduce health risks: Limit of 10 drinks a week for women with no more than 2 drinks a day most days.

Limit of 15 drinks a week for men, with no more than 3 drinks a day most days.

This is a vintage desser t recipe that is sure to become a family favourite. It uses simple ingredients and is quick and easy to make. While this dish is baking an amazing thing happens. The thin sauce you poured on the top forms into a pudding at the bottom of the baking dish and the cake batter you placed on the bottom goes to the top. This type of pudding cake is also called a sauce cake and historically it was called a

cottage pudding. Older versions of this recipe usually call for 1 cup of raisins instead of the chopped apple, and the olive oil would often be lard or butter.

It was also called hard time pudding, referring to its popularity during the great depression of the 1930’s. Its popularity among pioneers arose due to the use of basic and economical ingredients and the fact that it is a cake that does not require eggs. Sauce cake recipes have been passed from generation to generation and has been part of our history of cooking on the prairies.

Apple Cake with Carmel Sauce 1 cup all purpose flour

2 Tablespoons sugar 2 teaspoons baking powder 1 teaspoon cinnamon 2 tablespoons olive oil 3/4 cup milk 1 apple, cored and chopped into small pieces (I leave the peel on) 3/4 cup brown sugar 2 tablespoons butter 1 3/4 cups water Preheat the oven to 375 degrees.

Grease your casserole baking dish, I use butter. Mix together the flour, sugar, baking powder and cinnamon. Stir in the olive oil, milk and apple. It will be a very thick batter. Spread the batter in

the bottom of a casserole dish. You can use a round or a square. In a separate bowl or 4 cup glass measuring cup add and mix together the sugar butter and hot water. Pour this mixture over the batter, leaving it to float on top of the batter. Do not stir. Bake at 375 degrees for 30 minutes. You can serve it hot with cream or ice cream. It can also be served cold, with the caramel sauce spooned on top of whipped cream or ice cream. The brown sugar can be cut back to 1/2 cup or increased to 1 cup depending on how sweet or rich you like to live. The apple can be substituted for 1 cup of raisins.

Burkedale School Takes Awhile To Get Going

I n 19 2 0 , t h e r e were enough people living in the Burkedale area that it was decided that there needed to be some sor t of schooling for students in the area. A total of 17 ratepayers attended a meeting on March 20 to vote for the formation of a school district. A site was selected and a building that was for sale through George Hines was purchased to use as a temporary school.

The Depar tment of Education would approve the establishment of the district but the establishment of a permanent school wouldn’t happen quite yet.

In 1921, another annual meeting was held and an estimate for the purchase of a school was debated. Tenders for the school were put out and debentures were issued for $3,000. Unfortunately, people in the area had decided to put a concrete basement under the school and that held up the building of the school. A tender was then issued for the concrete, but the board then had second thoughts regarding the school and wanted to explore securing the building originally offered by George Hines.

By May of 1921, the board decided not to open the school at all, before deciding to go ahead with the alteration of a house to be used as a school.

Things moved quickly by this point and in late fall, a year-and-a-half after originally deciding on a school, the renovated school house opened and Mrs. W.H. Irwin took over as teacher.

In 1922, the move to a permanent school continued and George Berry was contracted to build a stable for the school. The attendance at the school was small at this point and Mrs. Irwin decided to take only half her agreed at tendance. The lower at tendance was because of a whooping cough epidemic.

I n 19 2 3 , h o t c h o c o l a t e w a s purchased for the winter so that the children could receive hot chocolate ever y d ay at n o o n. Im provem ent s were also made to the building, with the idea of a permanent building abandoned, through volunteer labour. Mrs. Irwin would resign at Christmas, and M. Waldron was hired to replace her.

One of the biggest issues for the school during this time was a lack of a reliable source of fresh water.

Having a child responsible for bringing water did not work great, so the board looked into building a well. Once this was done, it was then brought up the idea of a permanent school. Seeding and plowing was done at the permanent school site to prepare it for the new school. The tender of W. Smith was accepted for that work, and the school was closed this year in July and January.

In 1925, Miss Spurrell was hired as a teacher and the well that was dug

continued to have problems.

Finally, in 1929, nine years after the original meeting for the school district, it was decided to go ahead with the building of a new school. A plan was selected and the $2,500 contract was awarded to Superior Lumber Yard.

Before long, the new school site was completed and in use by the students.

The school would operate until 1953 when it was closed and the students

were bused into Marwayne. The building itself was sold to V.C. Hines, who would use it as a machine shop.

VES – Hot Lunch Dance

The Vermilion Elementary School hosted a Halloween Dance for families as a fundraiser for their Hot Lunch Program on October 24.

“VES Hot Lunch Program Society loves putting on the annual Halloween Dance.

It’s great fun for the whole family. We had 267 people attend this year raising just over $1,000! It was a huge success and we appreciate all the support from the community.

This fundraiser ensures that we can continue to provide parents an inexpensive and convenient alternative for lunch, promote good nutritional education and encourage proper eating habits, as well as ensure that all VES students have access to the meal program regardless of their parents’ ability to pay,” said Chantel Betz – VES Hot Lunch Program Treasurer.

VIBE’s Just Say Hi Campaign has been running for approximately 10 years and encouraged children to interact with the community from October 21 - 24.

According to VIBE, the program is based on the premise that all students need positive connections with adults, which is one of the 40 developmental assets. Students collected buttons by going to participating partners, exchanging with students from other Vermilion schools and visiting Vermilion School offices, and offering to shake their hand and introduce themselves.

Participating businesses included Vermilion Voice, McDonald’s Family Foods, Co-op Gas Bar, the Bargain Shop, Your Dollar Store With More, the RCMP, Addictions and Mental Health, Victim Services, Vermilion Public Library, VES, St. Jerome’s School, J.R. Robson School, Vermilion Outreach School, School of Hope, Lakeland College Pool, and the Town of Vermilion.

It has been brought to our attention that the date on the tickets for Fall Supper is incorrect. Fall Supper will be on Wednesday, November 6 and NOT on Thursday, November 7.

Awards Night is taking place on Friday, November 1. It is a chance to celebrate our students’ academic, athletic and citizenship achievements.

Halloween is on Thursday and activities are planned for the last two periods of the day. We look forward to seeing the creative costumes students will be wearing that day.

J.R. Robson’s Student Vote before the federal election happened on October 18. Here are the results: 194 votes for Shannon Stubbs - Conser vative Party of Canada (winner), 16 for Jeffrey Swanson - NDP, 7 for Mark Watson - Liberal Party of Canada, 6 for Alain Houle - People’s Party of Canada, 4 for Kira Brunner - Green Party of Canada, 1 for Rober t McFadzean - Liber tarian Party of Canada and 0 for Roberta Marie Graham - Veterans Coalition Party of Canada. Each Grade 5B student filled out a Postcard for Peace to be sent to someone in the military. This year they’re sending them off to the Cold Lake Air Force Base.

SCHOOL NEWS Anna Svenungard Submitted

The month of October has flown by!

Students and staff came back refreshed a n d re ad y to t ac k l e more learning after a lovely Thanksgiving break. Many elementary students have been having fun and keeping fit with the first session of our school swim lessons done. The kids enjoyed this learning experience and the opportunity to better understand how to stay safe in the water.

Our new playground is finally open and the students are having a blast playing on it! A big thank you again to everyone who donated their time and energy to see this project through. Even our older Spartans have been eager to go on and play. Miss. Penner’s Grade Ten Health class spent part of their day enjoying the fresh air and fun new structure.

Mr. Greg Smith visited the Grade 2 /3 classroom to give a presentation for their Rocks and Minerals unit.

Students engaged in hands-on learning as they sorted rocks based on colour, tested their streak, and explored rock characteristics. Mr. Derek Young, the Director of Infrastructure and Planning Services for the Town of Vermilion, visited the Grade 4 students to talk about solid waste management in our town. Students understand better now why plastics are no longer accepted in recycling, the importance of the future organics program, and what they can do to increase diversion rates and reduce the amount waste going into our landfill. Our school greatly appreciates it when local experts give their time to share their expertise with our students, we feel very blessed.

Grade 5 students had the privi lege of participating in the dog reading program. Four dogs came from Lakeland College and each student read to a dog for 15 minutes. Grade 5’s described the experience as ‘fun and cuddly’, ‘comforting and peaceful’, they loved getting to meet the dogs and the students from Lakeland College! They are very excited for the dogs to come back!

Another year of Vibe’s “Just Say Hi” is in the books. Spartans loved meeting with VES students to exchange buttons and say “Hi” at recess on October 22.

The Public Library, Town Office, Lakeland College, and Coop Gas Bar, just to name a few, were part of many of the participating locations in town where students could stop by, say “Hi”, and collect a button. Constable Flynn came to visit us and hand out buttons. The Grade One students felt very special, as she took the time to say ‘Hi” to each of them and learn all their names. Way to go Constable Flynn! Students were excited to hand in all their buttons on October 24 and have their name entered to win a prize.

Congratulations to the High School Cross Country Runners who competed at Provincials on Saturday October 19 in Medicine Hat. The course was a mix of flat prairie and challenging hills, and the competition was tough! Well done, runners!

Marauder Spirits Strong As They Look To The 2020 Season

The Vermilion Marauders football team had just lost a playoff game 52 - 35, but were ebullient not delusional when they sang We are the Champions as their bus chugged away from Edson’s Holy Redeemer High.

With a roster full of grade 10s the team could be forgiven for looking forward and not backward. It’s been their modius operandi this season as they learned and grew in every game.

The Marauders backed into the playoffs when the division leading Hinton team was bumped to the 3A playoffs. Their reward was travelling to Edson for the second consecutive week for the Rebel’s first ever playoff game.

Leading the scoring with five majors was the Rebels all-purpose offensive machine Ryhker Lamabe who is quarterback, kick returner, kicker, receiver and rusher. But the Marauders were in the game until late in the third quarter.

Just after scoring to pull to within 5 points, the Marauders couldn’t stop Lamabe from returning kickoff for a touchdown. Although there wasn’t a convert, Edson took an 11 point 30-19 lead and didn’t look back scoring three more touchdowns to the Marauders two.

In the first half the teams traded touchdowns. But it’s end, the Marauders trailed 16 -12. The four-point difference came from Rebel converts.

Vermilion responded to Edson’s first major in just 38 seconds. Logan McNabb took the short kick off across midfield to the Rebel 45. On the first play, and his first carry, Ryland Fougere looked left and saw black jerseys, so cut back up the middle and found a lane. He was clear of tacklers from the 35 yard line to the endzone.

The Marauders didn’t score again until the clock ran out on the first half. The 9-play drive was riddled with penalties and big plays.

Fougere started the drive by reversing his field three times and was finally tackled on the Rebel 26. A screen pass to him picked up 2 more yards. Rookie quarterback Tylin Vold was forced to run and came up with flying elbows. The Marauders were flagged for blocking from behind making them 2nd and 18. On the ensuing play they lost 10 more yards when Tanner Stone sacked Vold.

Gambling on 3rd and 28, Vold connected with Jayben Gamaracy, playing in his first game since the season opener, who got behind the Rebel coverage for a 29 yard gain.

There was still a fight to the goal line.

Vold was shoved hard to the ground with a four yard gain. He tried to get a screen pass to Fougere but had to run and stepped out of bounds at the eight, still two yards from the first down. The siren sounded as the ball was snapped. Fougere drove to the endzone for the major.

Play was in the trenches through the beginning of the second half. Each team forced a take over on downs. There was no scoring until 4:20 of the third when Lamabe scrambled 48-yards into the endzone.

Although a blatant illegal block was missed by the officials, the Rebels had doubled their total 24 -12.

Not discouraged the Marauders persevered with a major of their own. After missing Fougere on a long pass, Vold scrambled to the Rebel 25. After another unsuccessful pass, Herzog joined the offence and tanklike bulled through bodies to the endzone.

Riley Cronin slipped tacklers for the convert making the score 24 -19.

Then came Lamabe’s disheartening kickoff return touchdown followed by two more touchdowns. The second was a pick six by Lamabe for a 44 -19 lead.

The Marauders would add two majors in the final quarter. The first drive following a kickoff taken by Logan Tupper. On the initial play Fougere was thrown out of

bounds by Stone and then hit. The resulting penalty moved the ball to the Rebel 35.

Vold looked downfield for Fougere. The pass was incomplete, and the Marauders were flagged for holding.

On the next play Herzog tracked down a wobbly throw while being covered by Tayte Zaporosky, The Marauders declined the pass interference call against Zaporosky to scrimmage first down on the 17.

Vold looked to pass but had to duck rushing Rebels and found daylight to the endzone. Cronin furnished the two-point convert to make the score 44 - 27.

Lamabe scored again at 2:45 to make it 52 - 27.

Vermilion’s final touchdown was Fougere’s third, a 10-yard run where he reversed fields and found a blocker to make the endzone with 1:49 on the clock. The drive started with Zac Bodie returning the kickoff to the Rebel 28. He was hit out of bounds

by Stone, his third unnecessary roughness penalty. A reverse from Bodurka to Herzog resulted in a six yard gain, then Vold swept to inside the 10 for first and goal.

Cronin added the two-point convert to make the Marauder total 35.

The Marauders would get one more chance to move the ball after a Bodie interception with 47 seconds left on the clock.

On what could have been the last play Fougere was deliberately and unnecessarily whacked on the head by Lamabe. That unnecessary roughness call was offset by a Marauder hold. The head ref was ready to call the game, but the Marauders wanted a last opportunity.

Marauder points after: Steven Bodurka and Zac Bodie played their final high school football games. Bodurka played on both sides of the ball with rushing yards and tackles. Bodie had at least five tackles, a knockdown, interception and a long kickoff return. He also brought down Rebel Jaden Langridge who is double his size…

Fougere had a combined offensive total

of nearly 220 yards with 75 passing yards and another 138 rushing…For the first time all year both teams dressed an the same number of players – 14…Edson took 12 penalties and Vermilion just 4. There could have been more. For example, a late hit on Vold wasn’t called on Lamabe’s pick 6…The wind was a major factor in the first half but died down in the second…It might have been an omen. Although the Marauders recovered their short kickoff to start the game, on the next play the Rebels forced a fumble and got the ball back…Herzog was a tackling beast even with attempts to double team him…Kudos to coach Lorne Maier who also was the bus driver.

Tylin Vold dodged blitzing Edson rebels and often ran when no receivers were open. Above he looks downfield as Jayben Gamaracy looks to where he could provide blocking support.

What’s Really Scary For Bat Week? Losing Our Bats!

It sounds like a creepy scary Halloween story: An introduced fungal disease spreading westward and wreaking havoc in its wake.

But it’s a dreadfully true story. The disease is White-nose Syndrome (Pseudogymnoascus destructans) and it’s already killed millions of bats in eastern North.

They’ve died during hibernation.

Now White-nose syndrome (WNS) is spreading westward through Manitoba and will soon be killing Alberta bats.

Currently there isn’t a medicine or other treatment to treat WNS. A probiotic treatment to help protect bats from WNS is being developed and tested by Canada’s finest bat biologist, Dr. Cori Lausen (a former teacher in Vermilion), says Darcey Shyry, a Lakeland College environmental science instructor. “It’s hoped that it could be applied at bat houses to inoculate our bats, but more rural participation in reporting bat roosts and installing and monitoring bat houses is needed to help battle WNS” said Shyry.

Bat Week will be celebrated internationally from October 24-31. The Lakeland College Environment Club and the Alberta Community Bat Program would like to celebrate bat week with an invitation to the public, particularly rural landowners,

to participate in bat conservation and to provide an update on a local bat conservation cooperative initiative.

Lakeland College’s Environment Club has already started to help bats by building bat houses. The club built four nursery bat houses, then donated them to Alberta Parks in 2016.

“The club’s goal was to provide safe roosting habitat for bats and to help monitor provincial populations and distributions,” says Robin Lagroix-Mclean, another Lakeland instructor and faculty advisor for the club.

The bat houses were installed at Dillbery Lake Provincial Park,85 km south of Lloydminster, in 2016. Since then the Alberta Community Bat Program monitored the house for bat occupancy and abundance.

“The deployment of these large nursery bat houses at DLPP has been very successful as all have been occupied by colonies of bats since 2017,” says Shyry.

Among the findings: DNA from collected guano and a bat carcass indicate that the endangered little brown myotis (Myotis lucifugus) is primarily occupying the bat roosts; only one guano sample from a bat house in 2016 contained DNA from a different bat, the big brown bat (Eptesicus fuscus).

Bat pups have been observed in all the nursery boxes since 2018.

In 2019 all these nursery bat houses are occupied by maternity colonies of 37-89 little brown myotis including pups.

All bats in Alberta are insectivores and eat mosquitoes and crop pests, especially those with a moth-stage like bertha armyworm and diamondback moths. Installing nursery bat houses in the proper location can help reduce pest abundances.

Increased monitoring of rural bat colonies is needed.

“If you’re a acreage owner or farmer, Bat Week would be a good time to show your gratitude for these sky puppies that help keep pest insect numbers down,” says Shyry. “Consider installing a nursery bat house in the correct location and monitoring bats that occupy using counts and guano submissions.”
