St. Jerome’s 2019 Graduation Ceremony

Congratulations and encouragement was shared as St. Jerome’s School held their graduation ceremony at the Vermilion Regional Centre on May 25.

‘You had to be there,’ was the theme of the event, and as graduates approached the stage their favourite memories and plans for the future were shared. Principal Allan Chase emceed the event, and Vice Principal Allan MacMillan sang a special song to the class.

Congratulatory speeches were given from Mayor Caroline McAuley, deputy superintendant Dwayne Zarichny, School Board member Alan Rogan, and Guest Speaker Bryn Lewin. The 2019 Valedictorian was Ashley Corbiere.

He encouraged the graduates to continue sharing their gifts and passions with other people.

HOT 6 Talks At Lakeland College

As a way to share Indigenous awareness, Lakeland College hosted HOT 6 Talks on May 22, as part of their ‘Meet the Inuit’ Spring Gathering which continued throughout the week.

In collaboration with the Heart of Treaty 6 Reconciliation, the Learning Network of Alberta, and Lakeland College, the session included Inuit, Metis, and First Nations presenters and performers. The Heart of Treaty 6 Reconciliation is a group of municipalities and organizations within the Lloydminster region that collaborate for cultural awareness events. This session highlighted presenters from Nunavut, Edmonton, Little Pine First Nation and Onion Lake Cree Nation, and Vermilion.

Lakeland College’s manager of Indigenous support services, Clint Chocan, welcomed everyone and emceed the event saying, “Today we are creating awareness.

With awareness comes understanding, with understanding comes acceptance, and with acceptance comes unity.”

Presenter, Neil Sapp (or ‘Little Feather’ in Cree), is a Heart of Treaty 6 member as well as a member of the Little Pine First Nation. He described three shocks that he received in his life; being dropped off at residential school, being placed with a foster family (a German couple), and when he went back to his reserve.

“I remember my brother telling me he got taken just walking down the road.

My grandfather walked the river banks all summer looking for his body. I didn’t even recognize my parents when I first saw them. Now, the more I’ve read about spirituality, the more similarities I see and I find that Indigenous and non-Indigenous cultures run parallel,” said Napp.

Heart of Treaty 6 member, and Onion Lake Cree Nation member, Bernadene Harper (‘Yellow Thunderbird Woman’ in Cree), shared issues and causes that she and other First Nations people have faced.

“Thank goodness our parents and grandparents were strong in our traditional ways and taught their children in secret. Some people lost who they were all together, there were certain places we weren’t allowed in, and certain things flash back memories for me. We are nehiyawak.

Before contact in 1492, we had our own governing system and healing system. In Residential School, we were told we were not even human and needed to be civilized. At 10 years old, I became ill and was sent to the infirmary, and they didn’t even tell my parents. A friend told her parents, who later told my parents, and later a principal attempted to not allow my dad to see me. By the time my dad pushed past, I was unconscious, and when brought to hospital, after three surgeries, he was told if I had been brought in an hour later, I wouldn’t have made it.

Goota Desmarais, is an Inuit from Cape Dorcet, Nunavut who lives in Sherwood Park but returns every summer. Desmarais explained that igloos were only used for short term accommodations when moving or hunting. She went on to say that many in the arctic had winter homes made of stacked stone with seal skin roofs (because they were waterproof); and summer homes made of skins (now canvas) and 18 foot ropes around for protection from animals.

“Sadly when the Government of Canada destroyed all of winter homes and hunting tools it crippled the Inuit for a period of time.

However, we’re very adaptable, friendly and giving. At first contact, my grandfather died of Tuberculosis and my grandmother was left with 17 children. Being given her first home with a furnace and lights, she said it was much easier. We used to use qulliq (lamps made of a stone bowl, arctic cotton, and seal oil) for heat, light, and they were the way we cooked our food.

My grandmother also stayed with me and my 10 siblings. Each morning she would create new art and bring it to the Co-op to help support us.”

She went on to say that everything in the north is very expensive, her flight last summer costing her $5,200. She shipped relatives a turkey and ham for $400, but said that it would have cost $500 - $600 there, and as a result trades for traditional food. Stating that basic needs are outrageous, she estimated that laundry soap would cost $96, two litres of milk would cost $20, that a loaf of bread would cost $21 if you could find one.

“Hunting is a very important part of our lives. Things caught on the land are shared with the entire community. At Arctic Bay, a bowhead whale caught took 11 people 11 and a half hours to harvest, and it was hard, hard work. However, it fed the whole community (1,036 people) for the entire year and everything was used including the bones,” said Desmarais.

She concluded by saying that Inuit people have so much resiliency, and suggested that if others want to become more involved with Inuit communities to get involved with Indigenous celebrations; that Inuit thrive on those connections. Mimicking sounds of sleds and geese, Desmarais and elder, Mini Freeman, competed in a traditional, friendly Inuit women’s game of throat singing.

shared that many people have a different idea about what reconciliation really is; and that now is a time of Indigenous resurgence, with Indigenous people rebuilding relationships, reclaiming ceremonies, and their connections to the land. Cheryl Devin, from Edmonton, encouraged audience participation as she performed the Red River Jig, and shared about Metis culture.

“We joined the Iron Confederacy as a Nation. Following the history of the Northwest Rebellion including the Battle of Batoche, and the Red River Battle, it is hard to maintain your cultural identity when you are described as the forgotten people.

Through the script process we lost land with only two per cent given, but Alberta is the only place in the world where 12 Metis settlements were granted (4 plots were deemed unsuitable and rescinded so 8 remain). We are reclaiming the kitchen table and remembering what it is to be Metis,” said Devin.

Member of Onion Lake Cree Nation from Vermilion, Kevin John shared that in his experience, there are no wrong questions, and that both sides of the treaties need healing.

“Racism often comes from unanswered questions, and we can misappropriate our feelings regardless of ethnicity. Reacting instead of responding is a major problem in humanity. Every person on the planet needs security, significance, and strength and healthy relationships can foster all three of those things,” said John.

The Learning Network of Alberta’s Dan Nash noted that the ‘Meet the Inuit’ Spring Gathering had been a powerful event; that teachers don’t often get the opportunity for such a deep experience.

The celebration ended with a round dance, known as the dance of unity with both speaker and audience participation.

Guests stayed to enjoy a meet and greet and refreshments following the presentation.

I have been working on this recipe for several weeks, and it is finally amazing.

This is a pie that has a creamy custardy base, with peaches, and topped with whipped cream. It is with a graham wafer crust, as the juicy peaches made a regular pastry crust soggy. I also tested this recipe with both fresh and canned peaches and I found that the fresh peaches made a better pie, but the canned peaches were acceptable as well, however, they made the pie much sweeter, even when I used the peaches that are canned in only pear

Peaches and Cream Pie

juice with no added sugar. If you are allergic to dairy products then this recipe can be adapted for you by using coconut yogurt instead of the sour cream in the pie, and using a non dairy whipped cream for the topping. The butter in the crust can be substituted with coconut oil instead.

Peaches are high in many beneficial polyphenols. In a study of post menopausal women, it was found that the consumption of 2 - 3 peaches or nectarines a day, showed a 41 percent lower risk from breast cancer. Other studies suggest that peaches: 1) may reduce allergies symptoms by preventing the release of histamine and 2.) Increase the detox of nicotine in smokers via the urine.

Peaches contain compounds that seem to help balance blood sugar and may help prevent insulin resistance. Their orange color shows that they are full of beta carotene, a form of vitamin A. Peaches & Cream Pie Graham Wafer Crust 1 cup crushed graham wafers 1/4 cup melted butter.

Combine the melted butter and the graham wafer crumbs, in a bowl, and then press into a 9 inch pie plate.

Filling 1 cup sour cream 2 eggs 1/4 cup sugar 1 teaspoon vanilla 1 Tablespoon flour

4 peaches peeled and sliced Combine the sour cream, eggs, vanilla, and flour and stir until blended. Gently stir in the peaches until covered. Pour into the graham wafer crust and bake at 350 degrees for 55-60 minutes. Allow to cool and then refrigerated before covering the pie with the whipped cream topping.

Whipped Cream Topping 1 1/2 cup whipping Cream 35% 2 Tablespoons sugar 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract Whip the cream and sugar together until peaks can be formed. Do not over beat or the whipped cream will separate and you will have butter and buttermilk.

Spread the whipped cream in the cooled pie.

Vermilion RCMP Locate Driver Fleeing From Stop

Vermilion, AB - In the late afternoon of May 25, 2019 Vermilion RCMP responded to a request for assistance from EMS. They were responding to a report of

an unresponsive driver in the area of 44th Street and 47 Avenue, in Vermilion. On scene police entered in to an impaired driving investigation. During the course of that investigation the driver fled the scene in his vehicle, at a high rate of speed. Police followed the driver and ultimately located him in

his residence, where he was arrested without incident. During his flight from police, the driver lost control of his vehicle and damaged a fence, thus disabling his vehic le. No one was injured during the driver’s flight from police.

A 55 year old Vermilion resident is

charged with several offences including: Impaired driving Refusal to provide a breath sample Flight from police The male was released from custody and will appear in Vermilion Provincial Court on July 15, 2019 at 10:00 am.

As the person is impacted by losses (identity, memory, dreams, relationship, mobility, recognition of the familiar, and so much more), causing fear, depression, anger and physical illness. comes to those who are part of that life of a loved one. From the beginning of the journey with the diagnosis until the physical death grieving begins. Loved ones experience the grief of loss too; of relationship, remembering the past, the personality changes, saying good-bye often to the person that was known and loved and meeting a new and changing person.

A Hard Winter Leads to The Hay Loss Event

The winter of 1919-20 in Vermilion was a tough one, there is no doubt about that. Lead ing up to that winter for several years, feed had been quite scarce throughout all southern Alberta.

Bringing in the harsh winter just added to the problem. With scarce feed, cattle were shipped to areas where they could graze.

In 1918, much of the crop had been frozen so Vermilion district borrowed $5,000 from the bank to make loans to ratepayers for the purchase of seed grain.

As well, 1919 was a dry year and that made local supplies of hay inadequate.

Nonetheless, farmers did what they could until Oct. 8, 1919 when many farmers were caught off guard by frozen rain and snow. This only made matters worse and Vermilion County council had to do what they could to help the area farmers with feed.

Shipments of hay were arranged from as far away as Manitoba. Unfortunately, the hay that arrived was poor-quality, spoiled and reedy.

Chris Robinson had been in charge of getting orders of hay into Vermilion district and A.E. Ronaghan took orders in the Islay district. Huge line-ups of farmers came to get hay with teams and sleighs.

Both Vermilion and Islay had an influx of people come into the community. Unfortunately, many left without any hay and some took only a few handfuls of mouldy hay because that is all they had.

When spring came, the price of cattle bottomed out and many farmers could not pay for the hay they had ordered. The entire event became known as Hay Loss.

A meeting was held at Morrison School after the winter was over and councilors knew that the Hay Loss event would come up in discussion. The council decided to take control of the entire matter. H.J. Ronaghan stood up and said “Do you blame me for the hay loss?” Arthur Lord then answered, “No I blame myself.”

No more was said about the issue and

council made the decision to write off the amounts that were not paid.

As many left that meeting in the spring of 1920, they did not know that the winter was not yet over and there would be two more months of cold and many would be near broke by the time the next annual meeting came around.

Reflecting on D-Day 75th anniversary

Dear Editor, On June 6, 1944, I arrived by boat on Juno Beach in Normandy, France, with the Canadian Scottish Regiment.

My role was in the mortar platoon. On June 17, I was based in a barn, anticipating an attack that never came. I went into a nearby shed to disarm the grenades when one exploded, resulting in the loss of my right arm.

When I returned to Canada, I In Normandy, many Canadians died it’s important that we never forget. became a member of The War Amps, or suffered wounds that they had to Sincerely, which was started by amputee veter- carry for the rest of their lives. As we Allan Bacon ans returning from the First World mark the 75th anniversary of D-Day, Toronto War to help each other adapt to their new realit y as amputees. Through LIONS-CNIB the years, we have made it a goal to remember and commemorate our fallen comrades, and to educate youth 22nd Annual Texas Scramble about the horrors of war.

Old Rivers Western Produc tions Ltd. will be hosting Sons of the Pioneers at the Vic Juba Theatre in Lloydminster on June 13, from 7:30 p.m. – 9:30 p.m.

T h e S o n s of t h e Pi o n e er s were created in 1934 by Roy Rogers. The band has since been playing continuous iconic entertainment for the past 8 5 ye ar s. T h er e ar e c ur r e nt l y s i x members, and throughout the years there have been approximately 40 all together.

“In 2018, Roy Roger’s son joined and we are glad to have him. We love playing the Midwest of Canada and the United States as people recognize all of the songs passed down from generation to generation. We are excited to come play in Canada because we always have good crowds,” said guitarist and vocalist, Tommy Nallie.

The group will be per forming 11 shows in 10 days, and often receives compliments on listeners being able to hear the same instrumentals and harmonies as when the group began.

They will also be releasing a new CD, and later this fall will play on the Grand Ol’ Opry stage once again.

For the past four years, Sons of the Pioneers have raised money for food banks or children’s charities while touring in Canad a. L ast year they supported the new Children’s Hospital in Saskatoon, and this year they will support the Rose Garden Hospice in Prince Albert and Ronald McDonald Houses in Alberta. Mike and Andrée Sheedy from Derwent shared a local kind service report, naming Danny Farkash a guardian angel.

“While heading into Lloydminster last week, we had a tire blow out on our trailer on Highway 16 near Range Road 42. I had no tools and no spare, so we unhooked the trailer and left it on the side of the road,” said Mike.

The couple drove back to Derwent to retrieve tools and a spare tire and returned a couple of hours later. As they pulled in, the trailer was still there, so they backed in to hook it up.

“A gentleman heading westbound turned around and said, ‘Seeing an older gentleman, I stopped to check and see that you were okay.’ He couldn’t see the tire or why we needed help at the time. The nuts were

seized on, and there is no way I could have gotten them off,” added Mike.

The couple noted that Danny Farkash not only took the initiative to turn around and pull over, but to proceed to go retrieve more tools from another truck and continue helping them.

“He changed our spare and sent us on our way and we felt that he should get recognition. It was raining a little bit, and the ground was wet. It was just amazing! He was a guardian angel as far as I was concerned.

Without his assistance, we would have had to get it towed,” said Andrée.

The couple went on to say that the local businessman, (Noralta Farms Ltd.) had given them a piece of his latest product – fence posts that never deteriorate. According to the Sheedy’s they are made from hay bale wrap which is made to withstand the Photo submitted sun.

Congratulations to the 28 amazing young adults who graduated from St. Jerome’s this past weekend. We are so proud of everything you have accomplished during your time at St. Jerome’s and are honoured to celebrate with you.

The Graduation Celebrations began on Thursday, May 23 with the In-School Graduation Ceremony as well as Cap and Gown pictures. As our Grade 12 Spartans entered the gym they were welcome with “high fives” from staff members who have seen them grow from kindergarten students to the fine young adults they have become. The graduates were introduced by Mrs. Roth and Mr. Whelan as they came onto the stage. Four young man from the graduating class led those gathered in “O Canada” followed by a message from Father Roger reminding the students that as they journey forward to always remember their roots here at St. Jerome’s and at Holy Name Church and that these roots will keep them

grounded. Mrs. Sanson presented Maria Pottle, representing the graduation class, with a donation of $200 towards another stained glass window on behalf of the Catholic Women’s League. Taya Henderson and Connor Bardoel acknowledged the staff for their support and encouragement over the years and for helping the grads to achieve their goals, followed by Mr. MacMillan who replied with an analogy of how teachers are like bridges, helping students overcome obstacles so they are able to continue their journey. Past Student Council President, Ashley Corbiere, passed the gavel on to new President, Matthew Beaudette, with words of wisdom and encouragement.

Cheradyn Bessette and Paul Dahoy delivered each graduate a memor y of their time spent at St. J through a “Remember When”. As Graduates exited the stage Mr. Chase moved their tassel from left to right and each received a gift from the leadership 10 class. The celebration ended with a slide show of photographed moments from their high school career and as babies.

Graduation Day, May 25, began with

a beautiful Mass led by Father Roger at Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Church, with the highlight being the exchange of light from the Graduating student to a sibling or other student at St. Jerome’s.

A delicious supper was enjoyed by all at the elegantly decorated Regional Centre followed by the official ceremony. The Graduating Class of 2019 looked stunning in their gorgeous dresses and formal suits as they were introduced to the stage by Mrs. Roth and Mr. Whelan.

This year’s theme “You Had To Be There” was expressed during the dignitary addresses, as guest speaker, Mr. Bryn Lewin, shared words of wisdom and inspiration and Valedictorian, Ashley Corbiere, shared insightful thoughts with the graduates. The ceremony ended with Mr. Chase presenting each graduate with their diploma. The evening ended with the Grand March, giving those attending one more time to celebrate and honour these amazing young people and all they have accomplished. Thank you to Mrs. Clark and Mrs. Forsyth for helping the students organize this incredible day.

Ms. Svenungaard’s grade one/two class went on a field trip to the Vermilion Public Library on Tuesday, May 21.They learned about the life cycles of bugs and all about the five senses. It was a wonderful learning opportunity and the students thank the library for organizing this event.

St. Jerome’s gathered together on Wednesday, May 22 at Holy Name of Jesus Church for our monthly mass.

Father Roger emotionally shared that he would be leaving Vermilion in July as he has been transferred to another parish.

Students were shocked and sad to hear this news as Father Roger has been part of our family for six years. We will miss Father Roger’s weekly visits to our school, his spiritual guidance and his tremendous love for our staff and students. He has been a wonderful blessing to our community.

On May 21, the Grade 1 students went on their science field trip by walking to the Vermilion Public Library. At the library, the students learned about the life cycle of bugs. They created either a ladybug or butterfly lifecycle using playdoh, pipe cleaners, and tissue paper. Using their five senses, they participated in a variety of activities. The students guessed objects in a bag through touch, guessed a

scent with their sense of smell, and taste tested water that was either salty, sweet, bitter or sour. They would like to thank the public library staff for making this event an enjoyable one.

Gr ad e 6 stu d e nt s re c e nt ly s o l d sausages to raise money for their field trip. Mrs. Myshaniuk drove to Mundare to pick up the Stawnichy’s Ukrainian sausage on May 22. The sausage was then sorted and sent home with Grade 6 students and parents. They greatly appreciate the support they received with this fund raiser.

Many of the Grade 6 students attended study hall throughout the past couple of weeks. It ran during lunch recesses in the VES Learning Commons and after school at the J.R. Robson VIBE Office for several days. Miss Alana, the VES VIBE Coach, and the J.R. Robson VIBE Coach partnered to run study hall, which was open to all Grade 6 students. The goal of the study hall was to provide an opportunity for students to practice study skills as they prepare to write Provincial Achievement Tests from June 14-19. Many thanks to those two ladies.

For 6 years I played and I started at age 7.

Forward because I like to help people to score goals.

It would be red and it would be like the jerseys we have now.

If you’re cleaning your yard and find mice, be careful.

Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome (HPS) is a potentially fatal respiratory illness. It is caused by Hantavirus, a virus found in the saliva, urine and droppings of deer mice.

People can get Hantavirus by breathing in contaminated dust or particles from the mouse urine or droppings, or by being bit by a deer mouse.

Symptoms occur two to three weeks after being exposed to the virus. They are similar to the flu and may include headache, fever and chills, muscle aches and shortness of breath, as fluid builds up in the lungs.

If you or someone you know shows symptoms and has been exposed to deer mice, seek medical care immediately.

And try to avoid exposure in the first

place.

“The best way to prevent Hantavirus is avoiding contact with deer mice. Eliminate their potential food sources. Keep garbage covered in pest-proof containers and set traps to catch rodents at your home and workplace,” says Alberta Health Services public health inspector Nicole MacIntyre.

“If there is evidence of rodents, you may need to call a professional exterminator.”

If you have to clean the area where deer mice have been, do not stir up the dust by sweeping or vacuuming the nest or droppings. Wear rubber or vinyl gloves and spray the urine and droppings with a disinfectant. Use paper towel to pick up the waste and dispose of promptly in the garbage. Thoroughly wash your hands with soap and water once you’re done.

Myrnam 4H Club Report April And May

In the month of April the 4H kids were very busy. There were lots of events happening in the club over the last couple months. The beef club had calf tour in the middle of April. We went out to all the beef families’ farms. The members were proud to be able to showcase their animals.

Showing their progress throughout the winter months there is going to be some great animals come show day.

The 4H members all became certified first Aiders. The club had received a grant from the University of Calgary 4H alumni,

and we used it towards getting all our members certified in First Aid and CPR. Thank you to Brad Straty for teaching our members. Thank you as well to the University of Calgary for their generous grant. Another grant we need to mention, we received was from the cornerstone co-op, thank you Co-op for your generosity, it will be used towards member related events.

A Fundraiser we hosted a chili supper and Pie Auction. We had a large attendance from the community and eager pie buyers. Miles Wowk was kind enough to donate his time to help the baking girls

showcase and sell their pies. With a Blueberry being the highest selling pie had sold for a whopping $110. It was great to have the support we do for our club. We sold a total of 10 pies for a profit of $675.

Overall it was a great fundraiser.

The First Saturday in May was 4H highway clean up. We spent most of the morning picking garbage, afterward we had a meeting finishing out the fine details of the upcoming show and sale. We finished off the day with Halter making. The members had a great time learning to make breaking halters which are longer so you can hold on! Our Growing smiles flower fund-

Vermilion Alberta Treasury Branch (ATB) hosted a pancake breakfast and silent auction raising funds for the Stollery Children’s Hospital for Mental Health on May 24.

According to www.stollerykids.com, research shows that 70 per cent of mental health problems begin in childhood and adolescence, affecting one in two Canadians by age 40 (half of those who develop chronic mental health disorders show symptoms by age 14).

ATB saw 80 pre-orders and were very thankful for the great support from local businesses. ATB’s across the province participated for their 20th year supporting the Teddy for a Toonie campaign to help children.

NOTICE OF ROADSIDE SPRAYING AND NO SPRAY ZONES The County of Vermilion River will be spraying weeds and brush along road allowances starting in June 2019. Roadside spraying will focus in Spray Area 1, but we will be selectively spraying noxious weeds and brush throughout the County.

If you want to control weeds and brush in front of your property rather than have the County spray, complete the annual No-Spray Agreement by May 31, 2019. Agreements are available at www.vermilion-river.com or by phoning the County Office.

ROADSIDE MOWING & HAYING CVR will be mowing all developed roads between July 15 and August 31, 2019.

Mowing assists with weed control, enhances road maintenance and improves visibility and public safety.

A permit is not required to hay County roadsides, however, all work must be completed (hay cut, baled and bales removed) before July 15 to allow for mowing.

2019 Roadside Hay Permits are available if you would like the roadside left unsprayed until July 15 for haying.

Permits are available on our website or by phoning the Office at 780-846-2244.

Roadside Hay Permits must be received by May 31 so we can schedule roadside spraying.

Eco-Buffer Planting Workshop Eco-Buffers are diverse, high-density shelterbelts that look and act like natural forest! Join the Agroforestry and Woodlot Extension Society and the County of Vermilion River for a handson Eco-Buffer design and planting workshop.

WHEN: Wednesday, June 5th 5:00pm – 8:30pm (doors open at 4:30pm) WHERE: Renewable Energy Learning Centre, Lakeland College We’ll start with a presentation on the benefits of Eco-Buffers and how to design one, then travel to a nearby site and plant and mulch an Eco-Buffer!

Light dinner provided. Participants should dress for the outdoors and bring their own work gloves and spade/shovel.

This is a great workshop for agricultural producers and rural property owners looking to increase forest cover on their land.

Please note that CVR will not spray adjacent to maintained yardsites and maintained tame shelterbelts.

Agreements are valid for the season in which they are issued and expire on Sept. 30th. If you would like to enter into an agreement or renew one that has expired, please contact the Ag Team at 780-846-2244.
