1st Annual Snowmobile Drag Races In Vermilion

The Vermilion Ridge Riders Snowmobile Club hosted the first SSRA race of the season at the Vermilion Airport on January 27.

Even with poor snow conditions, approximately 75 sleds registered, and Straightline Snowmobile Racing Associate (SSRA) owner, Dale Roger said, “We’re thrilled to be here in Vermilion.

I was here for the vintage show, and raced here many years ago. Vermilion has always been a great place to come!”

The weather created poor snow conditions, leaving a soft track and racers facing wind gusts up to 60 kilometers per hour. Unable to use their light trees, the SSRA opted to use a green light – go system, and went down to two lanes per race instead of four to ensure everyone’s safety.

Professional racer, Jason Rowland, from Meadow Lake, Saskatchewan began racing two years ago when his father started racing again. After he saw how fast they were going, his father let him try it off the track.

“When I went full throttle I realized

that I liked going fast, and I have been doing it ever since. Snowmobile racing is very exciting with a lot of adrenaline, and it’s a very friendly sport. I enjoy visiting after; everyone is really helpful and offers assistance to one another with their sleds,” said Rowland.

Amateurs also had the opportunity to try racing, and Derwent’s Brendon Tomusiak said, “I ride sleds a lot and figured I’d have fun and fire it up to see how it works.”

Five-year-old Luke Jaremco from Rusylvia was excited to race his ZR 200 Arctic Cat. He has been snowmobiling since age 3 – 4 and said, “I love it because they go fast!”

Entering her first race ever, Vermilion’s Leah Beaudoin added, “There are some nerves, but I’m very excited and hope to have fun.”

Ridge Rider s president, Warren Young thanked the volunteers for their effort, and sponsors for their contributions. He also thanked Alberta Parks for donating a snowcat with an operator for two days and said, “We couldn’t have done it without that thing! Thank you also to everyone for attending.”

With all of these great benefits it is no wonder that some researchers are wondering if it is actually the onion, which is responsible for the French paradox, which allows the French to indulge in so many rich foods while remaining heart healthy. Onions are one of Julia Child’s favourite ingredients and are a staple in French cookery. Onions add a lot a flavour and health benefits to so many dishes, making it a favoured ingredient in Canadian prairie cooking as well. Speaking of Canadian cuisine, this recipe can be a great topping for

January is always a great month for warming soups. This one is ver y filling and it tastes great. Onions are a great sourc e of the nutrient quercetin, and the good news is that cooked onions retain this beneficial nutrient, undamaged by the heat, and cooked onions are easier on the breath than raw onions. Quercetin is a flavonoid that may inhibit the growth of certain cancers. Quercetin has been shown to lower bad cholesterol al, raise good cholesterol and be protective of the cardio-vascular system. Onions are a natural source of both querctin and chromium, which both assist in blood

If you are eating dairy free, you can sub out the milk for coconut milk, use bacon fat or margarine for the butter, and it will still be filled with creamy goodness. You could add a little crumbled bacon, for even more flavour.

Cream of Onion Soup 2 chopped golden skinned onions 2 cloves garlic chopped 2 tablespoons of olive oil 4 tablespoons butter 4 tablespoons flour 3 1/2 – 4 cups milk

1 teaspoon sea salt 1/2 teaspoon pepper 1 tablespoon of chopped parsley or green onion tops (optional) Cho p the onion into s p o on size pieces, and finely chop the garlic. Sauté the onion and garlic and a fry pan in the olive oil until cooked. In a second pot, melt the 4 tablespoons of butter, add the flour and stir until thick and slowly add the milk while stirring. Each time after adding 1/2 cup of milk, let the mixture cook until it thickens and then add the next 1/2 cup of milk and so on.

You will have a thick cream sauce; add the, salt and pepper. Add the sautéed onions and garlic, and finally stir in the fresh parsley. Taste it and adjust the salt and pepper to taste. Makes four serving.

Meeting Up With the Middle

Now emptying the tank of gas through December preparing for the holidays could have something to do with feeling a bit spent in January. Admitting that managing energy and rest feels like not be able to find the charger cord for my phone for a couple days, it’s not something I’ve quite adjusted to yet. When you drain the tank over one long day, it’s now a couple before you even think about making a call

During last spring for me was one of anniversaries that signify a milestones in a p er s o n’s l i fe, what you would call a marker that squarely places you into the middle of that period called ‘Middle age’. Now it’s not like a cliff that sneaks up on you as you drive headlong toward it, flying straight off like Wile E. and you are suddenly at the bottom in a puff of desert dust. It’s more like one long January toboggan ride down a slight prairie slope, through the odd patch of sage brush and silver willows, windi n g d ow n t hr o u g h t h e g u l l i e s a n d draws where the hill is just descending gradually enough that the wind is not

or using any apps because that little battery icon is barely holding at 10% on your forehead.

This spring I had been invited in December to try out again for Team Canada at the Mini-World Cup tournament in March, but a fluke sprain injury on the knee within t wo weeks has managed put me on the shelf for this spring. The body just doesn’t recover from all those bumps, bruises, and sprains like it used to and participating at a high level at this age, it takes far more time to work back into shape and fitness. It’s rather telling that half the team from 2 years ago aren’t back for this time around. Maybe that toboggan ride is faster than I thought.

Now one thing I’ve noticed is that w h e n yo u a r e t h i s ag e t h e r e i s a tendency for people to start looking at you a bit more (hopefully) for input on

your experiences. You’ve been around long enough to have a few winters under your belt. You might not be able to do something quite as quickly so you aren’t playing for example… but you can still show how it’s done, explain the details, and perhaps have en oug h c o nfi d en c e lear ne d b eing around people to do it properly. So people my ‘age’ become those who are directing or running the show because they have the experience to know how things work. The councillors, teachers, coaches, generals…if you look at some historical ages they usually fit nicely into that middle age range. Not so bad right? So when I got an email back asking to be the forwards/power play c oac h instead this spring?…I think my toboggan might have a different run to go down but at least I’m not at the bottom yet.

Mannville’s Lord Mayor Of London

Many famous people have come from Mannville, i n c l u d i n g h o c key players and actors, but there was one individual who was born in the community on June 28, 1929, that would go on to have a great deal of success in life.

Peter Drury Haggerston Gadsden was born in Mannville when his father, Basil Claude Gadsden, was serving as a missionary priest in the community. Basil and his wife Mabel would have three children, of which Peter was the oldest.

Prior to coming to Canada, Basil had been ordained in Australia and served in the East End of London.

For the first five years of his life, Peter would live in Mannville with his family before the entire family moved back to England and began living at a rectory in Shropshire.

Educated at several schools and at Wrekin College, Peter would serve in the National

Service and study geology and mineralogy at Jesus College, Cambridge.

In 1952, after graduating, he began working for Fergusson Wild and Company as a minerals trader. Known as Trader Gadsden, he would be very successful in his position and would set up his own mineral consultancy in the 1960s and then become a managing director of an Australian mining company.

In 1955, he would marry Belinda Ann Haggerston, the eldest daughter of Sir Carnaby Haggerston, and they would have four daughters together.

Through his life, Peter would serve as an honory Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Marketing, the Institution of Mining and Metallurgy and a member of both Lloyd’s of London and the London Metal Exchange.

He was also a member of seven livery companies and served as the founder master of the Worshipful Company of Engineers from 1983 to 1985.

In 1969, he was elected to the Court of the Common Council and was appointed as the Sheriff of the City of London in 1970.

In 1979, he was appointed as the Lord Mayor of London and would remain in the position until 1980. On his election, he was invested as a Knight Grand Cross of the Order of the British Empire. This has now become a regular feature of the event.

From 1984 to 1986, he was the chairman of the Private Pensions Plan, and he would be awarded an honorary Company of the Order of Australia, the highest honour in the country, for his work on the Britain-Australia Bicentennial Committee.

Despite living in England for most of his life, he would always retain his citizenship to Canada, and he worked hard to foster a better relationship between Canada and England.

He would die of a heart attack on Dec. 4, 2006.

We have written Senators asking them to kill the current version of Bill C-69 and send back to the House of Commons so this flawed attempt at re-working Canada’s environmental assessment regulations can be re-done. We have sat down with politicians in our capital to call for change.

We have been invited to the Prime Minister’s Office to hear our side of the story.

We have been constructive, offering solutions and ensuring the perspectives of resource sector working Canadians finally gain a voice. We have an impact. Because you now have a voice.

Vermilion Writer’s Group – Start Up Meeting

The Vermilion Public library hosted a Start Up Meeting on January 24, as a way to see if there would be enough interest in Vermilion to have a writer’s group.

Programs Coordinator, Sheila Heit led the meeting as a way to initiate it, and noted that in the future, the library could work together with the group. With approximately 10 people attending and more who may join in the future, she was thrilled with the turnout.

“The Vermilion Public Library targeted local writers throughout January and held a book display which people really enjoyed,” said Heit.

Participants of all genres and experience levels discussed what they would

like the group to offer. Possibilities discussed included a dedicated time for writing, using prompts, sharing tips, hosting guest speakers or presenters, networking and sharing ideas. Ultimately participants decided that the group was a good idea mostly to offer support and encouragement to one another, whether members were looking for consistency, accountability, or to improve their craft.

The new Writer’s Group in Vermilion will be meeting every three weeks beginning February 21 from 6 - 7 p.m. at the Vermilion Public Library’s meeting room.

Many noted that they already look forward to the group, and Heit said, “I’m so thrilled that so many people attended, and to the others that have shown interest. Carrying Charges In The Crop Markets

Some producers in Alber ta have questions about the price spread for crops between delivery months. Neil Blue, provincial crop market analyst with Alberta Agriculture and Forestry, looks at its cause and how to take advantage of it.

Blue says that a spread between future month prices for crops with a futures market is particularly noticeable. “The price spread is most often one where prices are progressively higher in forward futures months within a crop year. When crossing over into a new crop year, the supply-demand situation may change so the spreads between months have a different interpretation.”

Sometimes that progressively higher price spread is termed a carrying charge market. Within a crop year delivery period, the amount of carrying charge is a measure of what the market is paying to store the crop from one period to the next.

“A strong carr ying charge market - one where that price difference is large - is saying that we don’t really want that product near-term, but we will pay you to store it to deliver later on,” explains Blue. “A carrying charge market - or higher price going forward should not be interpreted to mean that

prices are expected to move higher in the future.” “ When the spread, or carr ying c harg e, is low or may be even the nearby crop price is higher than the deferred price, the market is saying, ‘we want that product right now.’ So, the spread between months of futures or cash prices is within a crop year is part of market analysis,” he adds.

The spread in prices is often measured against what the commercial costs of storage and interest are for the actual crop in a facility. “ That varies somewhat for eac h crop,” says Blue. “ For c anola, the commercial carrying charge is about $5.50 per tonne per month. The market seldom pays that much of a carr ying charge, but some market analysts follow the ratio or percentage that the market is paying of that full carrying charge.”

“For example, on January 17, 2019, the futures spread bet ween March and May canola was $8.50 per tonne.

Compared to full commercial carrying charges of $5.50 per tonne per month - or $11 per tonne for that two-month period - it calculates to a price spread of just less than 80 per cent of full carry. Analysts watch for a change in that carrying charge percentage as a signal of change in market demand.”

Blue says that for producers to take

advantage of the spread on price, by capturing that carrying charge in the futures or cash market, they have to lock it in. “That can be done with a deferred delivery contract, a futures sell position or by using an option strategy.”

“Again, the carr ying charge does not necessarily mean that prices are expected to rise in the future. However, c a r r y i n g c h a r g e s c a n p r ov i d e a n opportunity to have the market pay a producer to store crop while waiting for the delivery period. That payment advantage can be greater than inter-

est saved or earned by having the sale proceeds on hand earlier.”

As for using a crop payment advance while waiting for that delivery period, Blue says that is a good marketing strategy to consider. “That advance, of which the first $100,000 is interest free, is available from a few sources, including the Canadian Canola Growers Association and the Alberta Wheat Commission.”

Tips For Keeping Your Cows Happy And Healthy This Winter

Before the cold weather sets in, it’s important to come up with a plan for keeping your cows comfortable and well fed during the winter months. Beef and dairy cattle alike can become sick and stressed when they get too cold. As you prepare your farm for winter, make sure your cows have everything they need to stay warm.

1. Provide adequate shelter. Cattle are fairly hardy, but they still need protection from the elements, especially during snowstorms. Make sure your cows have access to shelters that they can access

when needed.

2. Keep cattle well fed. Cows generally eat more in the winter because they have to burn more calories in order to stay warm.

And although cows can graze through the winter, they won’t be able to find much to eat if the fields are covered in snow. Make sure you’re providing your cattle with other nutritious sources of food, such as high quality hay and energy supplements like corn or soy hulls.

3. Ensure cows have access to water.

Cattle need lots of water to stay hydrated,

but many water sources freeze over or become difficult to access during winter.

Make sure to provide cows with unfrozen water a few times a day and consider installing tank heaters in cattle water sources.

4. Attend to pregnant cattle. If you have any pregnant cows in your herd, keep a close eye on them during the winter, especially during storms and intense cold spells. New Technologies In Farming

When you think of farming, you probably don’t think of drones and robots. Nevertheless, farmers everywhere are using these technologies to increase the productivity of their farms and the quality of their crops.

Here are just a few of the latest types of technological advances that are currently shaping the agricultural industry.

Drones. Also known as unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), drones are one of the most important new technologies in agriculture today. Farmers use them to spray fertilizers and pesticides on crops, thereby reducing the amount of manual labour involved in performing these tasks.

Drone technology can also be used to monitor crop fields and livestock, and create aerial maps using GPS technology to help with crop planning and land management.

Agricultural robots. Agrobots are increasingly being used to harvest crops and carry out other simple tasks. Unlike human workers, robots are not in danger of hurting themselves when working long hours and performing repetitive tasks, and can be used when there are labour shortages.

Air and soil sensors. Sensors are installed on farms to monitor temperature

The 8th Annual VIBE Day was held at St. Jerome’s School in Vermilion on January 24.

Nearly 130 Grade 6 students from Mannville, Kitscoty, Clandonald and Vermilion participated in seven sessions that promoted mental wellness.

Alber ta Human Rights provided a Community Inclusion Grant which supported a First Nation session. The session was delivered by Debbie Semeniuk and Kevin John from Asokanihkewak (They Build Bridges), who shared Nehiyaw Iskwew Tipi Teachings (Cree Woman Tipi Teachings). During this lesson, while students helped one another construct and decorate tipis, they learned that each of the 13 tipi poles has a corresponding virtue, and an additional two for the smoke-flap poles (humility, respect, obedience, faith, strength, happiness, sharing, cleanliness, kinship, good child rearing, love, as well as thankfulness and hope).

One of each of the completed tipis will be going to one of the Grade 6 classrooms who participated.

Be Fit for Life and AHS ran an obstacle course, led by Curtis Gorkoff and Joanne Stewart. Leslie Bakker from the Lloydminster Interval Home discussed healthy relationships.

Cornerstone Coop sponsored the lunch and snacks, and the Crisis Line provided the water for everyone. Snack Attack was led by the Primary Care Network’s Caroline McAuley and AHS Nutritionist-Elizabeth Fraser.

AHS Addictions and Mental Health’s Lorelee Marin discussed mindfulness with the students with assistance from AHS School Health’s Fallon Stafford.

“Finding ways to bring mindfulness to your day can be very powerful,” said Marin.

Students learned helpful ways to let go of strong emotions, such as breathing or Debbie Semeniuk (l) and Kevin John (r) with Grade six students at VIBE Day in Vermilion.

At 1:10 we will head outside to celebrate Winter Walk Day, walking around the perimeter of the school until 1:50. After we come inside, we will enjoy a healthy snack in our classrooms. O u r CA L M c l a s s e s h ave h a d a busy final few weeks, and would like to thank Jonan from Learning Clicks for presenting on the process of transitioning to post-secondary, Chelsea from Self Centered Yoga and Wellness for introducing us to the power of meditation, Lakeland College and Por tage College for program overviews, and Stuart from the Vermilion Public Library for highlighting all the resources the library has to offer. He even treated students to a sample of a general interest course from the library by teaching us how to make espresso.

ship projects. We have been learning that together we can make a difference. This year we have decided to join the Northern Birthday Box Project as our global citizenship project. This also meets our goals of infusing First Nation, Metis, and Inuit perspectives, and understanding that where we live affects how we live. The Northern Birthday Box Project provides birthday parties for children in the far northern communities of Canada. Northern birthday parties are often a community event and can be very expensive simply because of where they live. The cost of groceries is so high in Northern Communities that one cake mix can cost as much as $12. We would like to help make birthdays special for the children in the far north of Canada. We are estimating that we will need $30 to fill and $25 to mail each

box. Should you wish to make a donation of over $20, you or your business will be recognized in the school newsletter. We are asking that each VES child bring $3. If everyone helps a little, we can make a big difference.

Each VES student has an AR goal for their grade. All students who reach their halfway goal get to have their picture taken with their favorite book, which is posted on the AR Wall of Fame in the Learning Commons. Students who reach their yearend goal get a Gold Star on their photo.

The best part is, when a student reaches their year end goal prior to January 31, the student gets to order a new book for the Learning Commons. Once the new book has arrived and been catalogued, the student signs the inside cover of the book showing it was their choice, and then they

get to be the first person to read the new book. We are fortunate to have the Vermilion Credit Union supporting our reading program with funding used to provide this reading challenge. As a second reading bonus, for our April 2-9 book fair, we are offering our students Book Fair Bucks according to how many AR points they have. The more AR points they have, the more bucks they will receive to spend at the Scholastic Book Fair.

Most Alberta farm operations are family-based businesses where farmers live, work and play. Because of this, it can be hard to get away from the daily grind.

Daily chores, inclement weather, business planning and financial management can be a lot for a person to handle. It is important that farm owners and family members know the signs and symptoms of fatigue, anxiety and depression. “When you begin to feel overwhelmed or burnt out, one of the best things you can do is call a timeout, step back and take a moment for yourself. When you take time for yourself, you are giving your mind and body a break and time to re-energize,�

The Surprising Benefits Of Cattle Farming And Ranching

(NC) Although sometimes challenged, cattle farming and ranching plays an important role in preserving biodiversity and the habitats of local wildlife, while also supporting healthy soil. Just as the bison kept grasslands healthy and viable for centuries, cattle grazing has the same effect.

According to Dr. Christian Artuso of Bird Studies Canada, grassland bird species — such as the Burrowing Owl, Baird’s Sparrow and Chestnut-Collared Longspur — require a variety of grazed grasslands to survive in the wild. So grazing cattle helps to maintain the habitat of species at risk.

Grazing rather than cultivating crops is less disruptive to the landscape and helps sustain native grasses and grassland bird

populations, which ultimately benefits the ecosystem. Recognizing the importance of cattle’s contribution to preserving native prairie and wetlands, environmental groups such as, Bird Studies Canada and Ducks Unlimited are working to help develop programs like, Graze On, to encourage and support cattle ranching as initiatives for conservation and environmental benefit.

Beyond the prairie landscape, much of the land used to raise cattle is not suitable for farming crops and vegetables. Therefore, beef farming allows land that is too rocky, hilly or dry for growing crops to become an important resource to raise nourishing food.

In many rural areas, raising cattle is the most environmentally beneficial use of the land.
