Vermilion Farmer’s Market – 40th Anniversary

Approximately 250 people attended the Vermilion Farmer’s Market on September 11 at the Elk’s Hall, helping them celebrate their 40th Anniversary.

The first Farmer’s Market in Vermilion was held outdoors in the Town Parking Lot on the first Tuesday of September, 1978 and featured eight vendors. A few weeks later, they moved indoors to the Elk’s Hall, and have remained there ever since.

“Today we can celebrate because of a few local women who wanted a place to sell their plants, produce, baking, and crafts. Thank you to our new and longtime vendors...For instance, Jason, from Kathy’s Greenhouse, is a third generation vendor. Thank you also to our patrons; today we have two visitors from Mexico

during their first visit to Canada, Alberta, of the seasonal gems in our community. As a dietitian; it is a subject near and dear and Vermilion. Thank you to Virginia Keep supporting local production of food. to my heart.”

Guests enjoyed coffee and cake as well as a lunch and shopping from approximately 20 vendors. Throndson was thrilled with the growth of the market over the past few years and the variety of products.

Vermilion’s newest dance school, Celtic Jewel Irish Dance, held its first class at Lighten Up Therapy in Vermilion on September 12.

Instructor, 15-year-old Sidney Uden, led the class beginning with the importance of stretching, followed by the introduction of several techniques. This is Uden’s 3rd year instructing, and she attends Grade 10 at J.R. Robson School.

Owner, Joanne Uden, said that her maternal great-great-grandparents and her paternal grandparents had both emigrated from Ireland to Canada.

“I’ve always loved Irish dance, but never had access in a small rural area. The final deciding factor in opening this school was that on June 29, my mother had her third major stroke. On the 12 hour drive to visit her, Sidney and I discussed the idea. My mother doesn’t have all of her memory, but surprising even the doctors, is still walking and talking; her name is Jewel.

We are thrilled and nervous; everything that comes along with doing something outside of your comfort zone.”

Old School Cheesery – First Économusée® In Alberta

Several government and industry representatives met at the Old School Cheesery Ltd., to congratulate the family business on being the first économusée artisans in Alberta on September 13.

Patrick Dupuis and his family were thrilled to be selected, and to join a network of bilingual artisans in seven provinces and eight countries. With the help of Économusée®, their newly decorated boutique features bilingual placards that describe their process of cheese making, as well as making traditional and modern references to the industry in Alberta and Canada. Their cheesery is located south of Vermilion and delivers to the local area through markets; 28 grocery stores in Vermilion, Elk Point, St. Paul, Bonnyville, Cold Lake, Mannville, Wainwright, Paradise Valley, Lloydminster, Vegreville, Beaumont, and Edmonton; as well as eight or nine restaurants. Clients from as far as Airdrie routinely make the trip out for their delectable handmade cheese. During Alberta Open Farm Days, they hosted 140 people including some from Calgary. Étienne Alary, director of Conseil de développement économique de l’Alberta,

gave an address saying, “For a Francophone entrepreneur in Alberta, it is an undeniable advantage. Joining the network differentiates you from your competitors and allows you to share your passion with your customers. In addition, the concept also aims to ensure the economic development of rural area by focusing on local tourism to artisans.

In this sense, Économusée® remains an interesting hybrid between tourism, agriculture and economic development.”

In promoting their cultural heritage and cheese making skills, the family continues to love sharing a wide array of cheese flavours with people all across Alberta.

They have hosted tour buses of school groups and seniors from all across the province. They often make suggestions for travellers to visit other area producers, and even make a beer flavoured cheese with product from an area brewery.

Mélanie Dassylva, from Économusée® travelled from Quebec and said, “You have been selected because of the quality of your product, but more because you had a fabulous story to tell. I wish you every success for the future.”

“I believe in the agriculture industry strongly. I think everyone needs to know

where their food is coming from, and with what passion it comes. This is a great opportunity for us to showcase what we are doing, and it is always fun to see people coming into our shop. Their interest and questions are what drive us,” said owner Patrick Dupuis.

Guests enjoyed sampling their many cheeses and touring the facility. On the tour, Dupuis noted that their customers dictated their flavours; and they don’t use any preservatives, powders, or colourants.

Guests learned that with so many cheese options to taste, 70 per cent of Canadians only eat cheddar or mozza. People all across the province have responded well to the Old School Cheesery’s flavours, curds, and brie. Future plans to grow their business include a milking parlour in the back where they hope to house goats and expand into more fine cheese.

‘Growing Up On The Prairies’ – Book Launch

The Book Launch for ‘Growing Up On The Prairies,’ recollections written by the late Nell Charlwood (nee) East, was held at the Vermilion Senior’s Centre on September 12.

Family from Australia, Edmonton, and the surrounding area attended to celebrate the launch.

According to family, Charlwood was the last baby born in the old Vermilion Hospital on June 30, 1919, to Neil and Dora East. She was raised nine miles south-west of Vermilion in a house (built by her father) that still stands today. After marrying and moving to Australia, Nell wrote her recollections for her grandchildren so that they would know what life was like during those years in Alberta.

The book tells tales of her father’s gold mining expedition in the Australian desert (where he met her mother), her mother’s nursing background which proved useful on many occasions on the

prairies, escapades with her brother, and the hardships of the early years. It also details her teaching career, how she met her husband (a member of the Australian Defence Force), and later moved to Australia where she went back as a librarian for 25 years and lectured at Melbourne University on children’s literature.

“She had so much energy; mom was always very hard working,” said daughter, Sue Brown.

“After 72 years of living in Australia, she never applied for an Australian citizenship. As she aged, her Canadian anthem meant more and more to her.

Our mother missed her homeland, and now we feel like we’ve brought a part of her back,” said daughter, Doreen Burge.

Homemade Cookies

H o p efu l l y by t h e time you read this the weather is sunny and the farmers will finally be able to be in the field combining, instead of waiting for a week of rain to subside. Back to school and harvest time are both exciting and busy times when it is handy to have some home made cookies on hand.

Some of my favourite cookies for fall are soft chewy gingersnaps, and peanut butter cookies. These gingersnaps have a wonderful flavor and aroma. I have gotten many compliments on these cookies. The molasses in the gingersnaps is a good source or iron.

This is a perfect vintage peanut butter cookie recipe from my very old Five Roses cookbook. It is my very favourite peanut butter cookie recipe. Interestingly, peanut butter has many health benefits. It is a very good source of antioxidants. The mono-saturated fat in peanut butter includes oleic acid, the kind found in olive oil, that has been found to be Mediterranean diet heart healthy .

Peanuts are also a source of resveratrol.

Reveratrol is the beneficial substance found in red wine. In the nurses’ health study, which involved 86,000 women, it was found that there was a correlation between nut consumption and a reduced risk of cardio-vascular disease.

Many of the nutrients found in peanuts have anti-cancer properties. Studies have shown peanuts to reduce the risk of colon cancer, gall stones, weight gain and Alzheimer’s. Peanut butter is an excellent source of biotin, which is good for better blood sugar balance, lowering cholesterol and healthy hair and nails.

Both of these recipes will definitely put you into the Suzy homemaker category.

The best thing about homemade cookies is zero dangerous Trans fats. Before you send anything peanut butter, with your kids to school, be sure to check with your school to be sure that peanut butter and nuts are allowed, Some school have a no nut policy if there is a child that has a severe peanut or nut allergies.

Cream the but ter and both sugars together. Cream the in peanut butter and then the egg and vanilla. Stir in the flour, baking powder and salt. Roll into balls larger than a walnut but smaller than a golf ball. Press the cookie ball with a fork in two directions to slightly flatten.

Bake on a greased cookie sheet for 10 minutes.

Soft Gingersnaps 1 cup sugar 3/4 cup butter 1 egg 4 tablespoons of cooking molasses Pinch of salt 2 cups of flour 2 teaspoons baking soda 2 teaspoons cinnamon 2 teaspoons ginger Add the dry ingredients to the mixture of sugar, butter, egg and molasses.

Shape into small balls, about 1” – 1 1/4 “ in diameter. Roll the balls in white sugar.

Do not flatten, or flatten only slightly.

When the cookies have cooled, store them in an air tight container to retain the soft chewy texture. For the traditional, harder gingersnap, or ginger bread men bake the cookies at 350 degrees for 15 minutes. At Christmas when making gingerbread men, roll out the dough on a well floured surface, dusting the top of the dough with flour as well, to prevent the rolling pin from sticking.

Historically gingersnaps have their roots in being an English and European cookie. They would be served with tea and cucumber sandwiches which provide a cooling contrast to the warm spices in the cookies. In England ginger snaps are often called ginger nuts. These cookies are also nice with coffee, hot cocoa or how my boys always like them, with a big glass of cold milk.

This week’s c olumn st ar ts of f with thinking about frogs and perhaps a couple stories about frogs you may be familiar with. One that offers the idea about if the said amphibian gets into water of a comfortable temperature but then it is slowly and gradually heated, well that frog will be either too unmotivated or too distracted from the gradual change to make the necessary decision to get out before it’s too late and gets cooked. Boiling The Singing Frog

villian act of all time only when alone with the discoverer, but revert to the inertly lifeless croaking toad when observed directly by anyone else. Great comedy…that is if you’re not trying to make a fortune off the frog.

Now I wouldn’t say I’ve spent a whole long time dwelling on frogs here, but obviously lately they have come to mind. I do remember as a kid we had a pond down by the runway that would fill up with runoff, where my brother and I would spend time finding and catching them each spring, perhaps making their lives far more perilous and difficult than they would have been prior to making our acquaintance.

Catching a bullfrog and putting it in the big cow water trough comes to mind. Now other than the fact these two story ideas intersect really just on the frog…they do have an awful lot to say about a lot of things going on lately in my little world, and the bigger one too. Last Saturday I

was actually mowing the lawn and even thought it was far too dry for them to be about, was constantly dodging all the hopping frogs trying not to end their lives prematurely by wheel or blade.

But after all that push mowing on foot through that day, I met up with my ‘boil the frog’ moment overnight. My knee that had been bothering me most of the summer, and had not been giving sufficient TLC enough to in getting it better, swelled up like a balloon and I spent the next evening and early morning in emergency getting fluid drained out of it. Unfortunately, the knee had also been performing as my ‘Singing Frog’ all summer too, being well enough to help play with my soccer team cashing in on that adrenaline of being out on the stage of the field, but the rest of the week away from the team reverting to the lifeless limping version of itself. So that very Sunday we won our last game and the league with it, me and my boiled

singing frog on the sidelines watching on crutches. Sigh.

There is something awfully important to be said for not putting off tough decisions, ones that you can predict and know you will have to make, and be better for you to do sooner rather than later. And in the end, finally getting to cash in on everyone finally seeing your version of the singing frog. Mine will be physio and a more restful off season…and maybe playing again next summer when my team gets its promotion back to major league. Now around here on the bigger stage than mine, our ongoing saga with that Trans Mountain Pipeline project is one long mixed up version of the boiling and singing frog story too…each side of it seeing only their own version of the singing frog.

I’m really hoping we can find an outcome soon where everyone’s frog gets to sing to its hearts content, and nobody’s frog gets boiled out of it.

His departure means the Marauders will have a new quarterback in the backfield.

Vermilion Elk’s - Hall Renovations

Over the past six years, the Elk’s Hall has undergone renovations including the roof, foundation, wainscoting, and re-leveling of the floor. The $80,000-floor project was in part possible with the help of a CIF grant from the provincial government, as well as their own fundraising, and volunteer labour.

“The new flooring was completed this summer, and the building looks dramatically different. We wanted to keep it modern and current,” said Secretary, Allan Chase.

The building was built after the 1918 fire, and purchased by the Elk’s in 1921, with the kitchen portion being purchased in 1959. In 1986, the hall portion was expanded backwards, and the bathrooms moved upstairs.

According to Exhaulted Ruler, Greg Young,

Elk’s provided public bathrooms to the community until the late 60’s or early 70’s.

In the 1940’s, there was a dance held every Saturday evening. The building was originally the Mitchell Motors (car dealership) showroom.

Their new upgrades include new round and rectangular tables, new chairs, a new sound system, and projector. Future fundraising will go towards kitchen upgrades.

To book the Elk’s Hall for functions including everything from safety meetings to Christmas parties and weddings, you can call Greg Young at 780-853-0147, or Allan Chase at 780-581-0734. There is seating capacity for 370 people, it also has a dance floor to accommodate comfortably 150.

A Cheque Presentation To The Morritt Family

Submitted A cheque for $3,944 was presented to Brian and Kim Morritt of Mannville in support of their son Kaiel from the Royal Purple Elks in conjunction with the Elks Lodge #395 Mannville.

From the August 18th Roast Beef Supper, funds where raised to help suppor t Kaiel’s family expenses for trips to Edmonton and Calgary to see specialists in the hope of finding what ails Kaiel.

The funds raised are a combination of private and business support.

All the door proceeds and donations were given with the meal preparation expenses paid for by the Royal Purple Elks.

Major Gift Announcement For Métis Students

Lloydminster, AB (September 11, 2018) — Today, the Rupertsland Institute and the Métis Education Foundation have announced a significant gift to support Métis student success and leadership at Lakeland College.

This gift builds on a previous commitment made in 2015 by the Métis Nation of Alberta and its affiliates – the Rupertsland Institute and the Métis Education Foundation – in partnership with Lakeland College, to provide financial support to Métis students.

To date, nine Lakeland Métis students have received financial support from this partnership.

There are currently 167 self-declared Indigenous students at Lakeland, of which 38 are Métis students.

Muffin Morning At VES

All the students at St. Jerome’s are thoroughly enjoying our newly update Library. The library has several new seating options that are comfy, functional and fun. There are also several new bookcases and a new layout to explore.

Our librarian, Mrs. Jackson, is excited to welcome new students and we appreciate all she has done to make our library amazing.

Thank you to Mr. and Mrs. Decker for the outstanding job they did to get the school in top notch shape to start the new school year. We would also like to welcome Mr. Terry King and Mrs. Lindsay Williams to our secondary teaching staff. Mrs. Kristen Clark will be return-

Thirteen Early Childhood Lakeland College students visited St. Jerome’s on Wednesday, September 12 in the afternoon. They will be observing and assisting in the elementary classrooms for the next three weeks and we are excited to work together with young energetic adults.

St. Jerome’s Annual Fall Supper is just around the corner on Thursday, September 27. There will be two settings, 5 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. at the Vermilion Regional Centre. We would like to Wel c ome Lisa Wright as our new Hot Lunch Cook.

She has had a very successful first week and the meals are delicious! Hot lunch is available Monday to Friday this year. Mondays and Fridays are FREE, but we ask that you still go online to pre order your meals for the month in advance. Just a reminder that the Breakfast Program is now a simple “Grab and Go” style. There will be a breakfast station on the elementary side and one on the secondary side available at 8:45 a.m.

The elementary will be doing a trial “Reverse Lunch” this year. Elementary students will go outside to play from 11:50-12:18, and then eat their lunch from 12:20-12:35. Hopefully this

allows students to finish their lunches, allows less rush with the hot lunch program, (secondary students will eat at 11:50), and encourage our elementary students to come in faster at the bell. We are open to feedback on how it is working once it has been in place for a couple of months.

We are going to be expanding our break fast program, as Mrs. Moses received a sizeable grant to help fund it. Breakfast will be served to students every morning that they are at school and the breakfasts will now include things like sausages and waf fles. This breakfast is to support any child who comes to school hungry or just needs a nutritious snack to start their day.

We graciously accept donations and volunteers to help keep our breakfast program running. Please contact Sharleen Moses at the school if you would like to help out in any way.

This year JR Robson students are joining up with VES kids to par ticipate in the Terr y Fox Run together.

JR’s students will come over to VES, watch a short video about Terry Fox and then walk laps around our school with us. This will take place at about 1:00 on September 26. Please join us if you are able. If you feel like donating to the cause, we will be having a silver

Orange Shirt Day is on September 30, but because that is a Sunday, VES will acknowledge it on September 28.

Students across BTPS will be participating in Orange Shirt Day - a day to honor the FNMI (First Nations, Metis, Inuit) children who attended residential schools. This day will begin with the learning of the story about Phyllis Webstad, a girl who at tended a residential school in BC and had her brand-new orange shir t taken away from her. Students are encouraged to wear orange that day. Orange Shirt Day is an opportunity for First Nations, local governments, schools and community agencies to come together in the spirit of reconciliation and hope for generations of children to come.

Prior to the day, students will be learning about residential schools in class.

SOS: Save Our Snakes - Gartersnakes Are Important To A Healthy Environment

A l o c a l b i o l o g i s t a n d L a ke l a n d College instructor is raising awareness about one of the main sources of snake mortality: roadkill. As 65 per cent of the reptiles in Canada are now species at risk, reducing the number of unnecessary deaths is very important for their conservation. “ Gar ter snakes are an im p or t ant member of our wildlife biodiversity,” says Darcey Shyr y, an instructor of Environmental Sciences. “But unfortunately in the spring and fall they have a habit of warming their bodies on roads and will cross roads near hibernacula (the underground chambers where snakes communally overwinter) and at travel corridors that cross roads, which leads to excessive numbers getting run over.”

Shyr y is raising awareness af ter encountering a single intersection with a dozen snakes dead on the road last weekend. “Such a substantial number of breeding adults and young-of-theyear snakes being killed and removed from the local population could threaten the persistence of snakes in that area,” says Shyry. “I think our children deserve the opportunity to have a similar natural inheritance that we were given by our parents and grandparents.”

Gartersnakes are predators on land

and in the water and like to eat small animals such as amphibians, worms, leeches, slugs, minnows, small mice and grasshoppers. So they help maintain the balance of nature by controlling the numbers of their prey. Adult female snakes are much larger than the males. Gar tersnakes don’t lay eggs; rather they give birth to litters of baby snakes. They’re not aggressive and don’t bite unless you grab them.

They don’t have venom that affects people so they are harmless to us if you leave them alone.

Alberta has three species of gartersnake but only the plains gartersnake (with the bright orange stripe down the back) is present in east-central Alberta. Unfortunately there isn’t much information about their populations.
