Guts And Gusto - Lea Park Rodeo

Cowboys were brimming with guts and gusto during the 64th Annual Lea Park Rodeo held June 8 - 10.

Award-winning cowboys and livestock gathered to compete, providing an entertaining weekend for spectators.

Announcers Brett Gardiner and Doug Young thanked the sponsors, volunteers, and the fans. Tickets were purchased throughout the weekend for 50/50 draws, and a Dodge Ram Truck.

Twelve-year-old Avery Roberts led the singing of “O’Canada,” and the Lea Park Riders performed the Grand Entry as well as carried flags between each

event.

Bullfighters on June 8, were Jordan Swanson and Monty Phillips, and pickup men were Jeff and Jason Resch. The Canadian Pro Rodeo Sports Medicine Team and Lloydminster Animal Hospital were also on scene. Events included Bareback Riding, Barrel Racing, Tie Down Roping, Saddle Bronc Riding, Steer Wrestling, Team Roping, Bull Riding, a Wild horse Race, as well as novice events.

“It was good the weather held out, and everything went really well. When Mother Nature cooperates, it helps quite a bit,” said Lloyd Gray, Lea Park Rodeo Committee President, after the perfor-

mance on June 8.

Throughout the weekend, thousands of rodeo fans enjoyed a range of food and beverages while watching the show.

Top notch timed and rough stock performances captivated the audience, and the atmosphere was full of rodeo spirit with a rich history of rodeo traditions that began right in Lea Park.

“What a picturesque part of the world it is where the North Saskatchewan and Old Vermilion River meet,” said announcers Brett Gardiner and Doug Young.

Skate Park Grand Re-opening

Approximately 75 people gathered with excitement at the Vermilion Skate Park on June 5, as the Vermilion Wellness Coalition hosted the park’s Grand Re-opening.

Director of Community Services, Shawn Bell thanked everyone for coming; The Parks, Recreation and Culture Board for approving the project; and Town Council for finding the funds.

“Without them, we couldn’t have done it,” said Bell.

He also thanked Boardom for coming from Lloydminster to provide a demonstration, VIBE for the graffiti wall, and Adam Steen and other community members for their input on what equipment they wanted to see at the park.

“We were thrilled to be invited. It was a fantastic event, and nice that it never rained. We look forward to continuing to

serve the area,” said Boardom’s Shawna Intwert.

Boardom is located on Highway 17 in Lloydminster and has a service shop for skateboard and scooter assembly or grip tape, as well as a large selection of clothing and accessories.

Tim Hortons Camp Day

Hundreds of people visited the Vermilion Tim Hortons on June 6, in support of their 7th Annual Camp Day. Mayor Caroline McAuley, Councillor Justin Thompson, and Northern Light’s Realty’s Ron Roth suited up and volunteered to serve customers. The staff also volunteered to wash car windows for customers as a way to help raise extra funds.

Council carried a motion supporting the nomination for Mayor Caroline McAuley to be appointed to the board for Start Up Lloydminster (formerly the Regional Business Accelerator).

One project from the Street Improvement Program had previously been held over due to being over budget. Assured that no funds will come out of reserves, council carried a vote awarding the contract to ASL

Paving for $561,204.29 + GST and a 10 per cent contingency.

The Airport Advisory Committee is interested in applying for grant funding as soon as possible to improve the airport. The first step would be to get a current analysis of the runway, apron, taxiway and avionics done and also to develop a masterplan for future use of the airport. The cost of this would need to be moved in to the 2018 budget, as this was originally anticipated for 2019. Council authorized $25,000 from capital reserve for the development of an airport masterplan in order to apply for

grant funding.

“There is a limited amount of grant funding ($2 million for the whole province). This process will give us a head start,” said Councillor Pulyk.

There was ongoing debate about the St. Jerome’s Playground Resurfacing project. Not included in their budget and not on their property, part of council was hesitant even though the outcome would be a worthwhile cause. Knowing other upcoming applications will be presented throughout the year, they also recognized that they could not say ‘yes’ to everyone.

According to Councillor Henderson, the project is aimed to benefit accessibility for community members and would allow both crutches and wheelchairs. She said that the $20,000 would not cover the full cost of re-surfacing, that grants are being applied for, and that community groups are being approached for additional equipment pieces.

“We would be getting a $100,000 park in our community for $20,000,” said Councillor McCullough who urged Mayor McAuley to call the vote.

With four Councillors for the motion and two opposed, the motion was carried.

A motion was carried for a fountain to be installed at the Vermilion Regional Center

by Twin D Plumbing and Heating.

During round table discussions, Councillor Pulyk said that the federal government had released their communities chosen for the next phase to receive the $25,000 in the Smart Cities broadband application.

“Unfortunately Vermilion was not one of those communities. I think we learned a lot from going through that process, and we’ll continue to look at how to connect our communities,” said Councillor Pulyk.

At the Federation of Canadian Municipalities Conference, Councillor McCullough felt there was a lot of valuable interactions and information including discussions on Cannabis, and Fire Marque.

“It might change the way fires are looked at all throughout Canada,” said McCullough.

He also noted having seen the melted vinyl on roads avoiding having to paint annually, and he looks forward to sharing more as the weeks go on.

Councillor Thompson enjoyed participating in Recycle Awareness Day at Lakeland Mall and showed community members what items could or could not be placed in blue recycle bags and participants entered a draw for a bee house. He also noted the prospect of a crime mapping program that both police and civilians can upload where crimes happen, and that Citizens On Patrol may make use of it.

Mayor Caroline McAuley won a $5,000 draw prize for Simple Cast Emergency Operations and Engagement at the Federation of Canadian Municipalities Conference. She also noted that it was announced that new capital projects will receive 60 per cent federal funding and one third provincial funding.

Lions-CNIB Golf Tournament

Thirty-nine golfers participated in the 21st Annual Lions-CNIB Golf Tournament at the Vermilion Golf and Country Club on June 8.

Participants were challenged by a blind putt and blind drive, and had the opportu-

nity to win a $10,000 hole-in-one prize. They also had the opportunity to try on glasses that simulate macular degeneration, cataracts, glaucoma, and diabetic retinopathy.

With a beautiful breeze and sunny skies, the Interact Club of Vermilion held their first Long Table Community Supper on June 7 aiming to bring more awareness to the community of Vermilion’s Interact Club.

Rotary Interact Clubs are designed to bring together young people ages 12-18 to d evelo p lead er ship sk ills

while discovering the power of Service Above Self. Kadin Morritt and Rhys Rac in e a p proac h e d t h e Ver m ili o n Rotary Club three years ago in regards to setting up an Interact Club as there wasn’t one for Vermilion and it is now 12 members strong. The clubs operate under the same motto and philosophy’s as Rotary International.

Nathan James, a first-year Interact Club member, suggested the idea for the Long Table Supper in the hopes of raising community awareness of the club. “ We s t ar te d p l a n n i n g t h e eve nt

in Januar y or Februar y be c ause I wanted to get our name out to the public because not many community members know of the club and us. The more people know about us, and what the club does the easier it is to fundraise for our different projects,” said James, who went on to say, “This is my first year in the Interact Club, and I really like it. It helps me become a better person.”

Summer is the perfect time to make a batch of homemade mango salsa. Salsa has its origins in Mexico and Central Amer i c a. It is t y pi c ally mad e with tomatoes, and seasonings such as lime, cilantro and salt. I just made this wonderful salsa and I want to share my recipe with you. In Mexico this type of salsa is referred to as Salsa Fresca, meaning a fresh salsa. I served it with taco chips and celery, but it is also a great accompaniment to fish. Enjoying this salsa today has me craving for a fish taco and a margarita in the Mayan Rivera.

Mangos have a large stone, and it is best to just slice around it, cube the mango and the tomato into pieces that are about 1/3 of an inch. Cut the onion into 1/4 inch pieces. The jalapeno pepper is ver y hot. Take care not to touch your eyes if you have been slicing this hot pepper. Cut the top off the pepper and then cut it in half. Remove the seeds, which are the hottest part. Cut the pepper into fine strips, and then cross cut into fine small pieces. Be sure to wash your hands after handling the hot pepper.

When eating hot peppers, remember, drinking water increases the burn, you need to have milk or sour cream to cool the heat. I have found that one jalapeno pepper is the perfect amount of heat to balance the sweet and salty

flavours in this recipe. If you want your salsa really hot, you can add about half of the jalapeno seeds into the salsa, but fair warning, that is where all the heat is.

Research has shown that mangos are filled with antioxidants that help protect against several t ypes of cancer, they are a good source of vitamin C, A and E, and the fiber and enzymes in mangos aid in digestion.

Tomatoes are a great source of lycopene, which also helps prevent cancer.

Tomatoes are a good source of many vitamins and antioxidants. Onion not only add great flavor but also onions have so many health befits that a book could be written on this topic alone.

What I love about cilantro is that it aids the body in detoxing, and that

is so impor tant. Both limes and hot peppers contain vitamin C and antioxidants that research has shown to boost immunity, help prevent cancer and aid in heart health. It’s amazing to know that this recipe is filled with great foo d s that have so many ama zing health benefits. It is a great summer or party dish.

Mango Salsa 1 mango, peeled and cubed 3 roma tomatoes cubed 1/2 cup cubed red onion 1/4 cup finely chopped cilantro Juice of 1/2 lime 1/4 teaspoon salt 1 jalapeno pepper – deseeded and finely chopped.

It’s not always easy to get much of that time due to the myriad of work and chore issues at home or the engagement from the kids being distracted by their electronics or social occasions with their friends. There just never seems to be enough time to distill the quantity you can find down to the quality you hope for. A symptom of the age we live in? Perhaps it is. It is certainly a different time for them to grow up than I was used to because the rela-

tive remoteness and lack of distraction to (any) other things my siblings and I had, and maybe growing up on a farm, meant that you were tagging along with your parents helping them out invariably…building fences, carry pails of chop, watching gates, riding on the tractor, carrying fence posts… or just riding in the front seat of the ‘Old Red ’ truck listening to CFCW on the radio or Dad sing Gene Autry tunes. I could go on infinitely on that subject alone. At any rate, you just seemed to be around them a lot when you weren’t at school.

These days once kids start getting old enough to par ticipate in those extramural type activities like Guides or Scouts or perhaps a communit y spor ts team, you begin to build in those scheduled self-contained little moments of the day where your kids

ar e i n te r s e c te d w i t h yo u i n c l o s e proximity, for just long enough, for a decent amount of individual engagement. Not saying that every opportunity there is a delightful bed of roses being locked in a car where nerves are frayed from lack of <fill in the blank>, b ut fin d in g o ut h ow yo ur k i d s are doing currently…the good, the bad, and the ugly…is often the result and that is a good thing. Maybe it is just an age thing, but recently the short trips have been less about quiet part-time distractions they bring to fill the time and more of the engaged with interesting questions variety. It’s one thing to be going off into the world in a vehicle as a kid and be overwhelmed by the blur of visual input going by and not really making sense of your place in it all. It becomes another when instead of playing the “Jeep” game coming

back after soccer practice just to get eyes looking out the window for once, things in their mind have begun to slow down for them, they’ve begun to break off digestible pieces of how the world works, and they start asking open-ended questions like “Were all the continents at one time attached together?”. It is the things like that that bring a guy like me, into science and knowledge and how everything works, together with your kid in a way that I find difficult to create otherwise. The half-hour conversation wound its way through Pangaea, plate tec tonic s, the Earth’s magnetic field, Northern Lights, and meteorology…amongst other things. They make for not just g o o d b ut s p e c i al m e m or i e s t h o se conversations…and the song ‘You are my Sunshine’ in the front seat of ‘Old Red.’

Celebrating Seniors’ Week

Approximately 160 people gathered at the Vermilion Senior’s Centre and gazebo to enjoy a barbeque honouring seniors in Vermilion on June 5.

Residents from Vermilion Continuing Care, the Vermilion Valley Lodge, a n d m a ny ot h er s e nj oye d v i s i t i n g during the meal.

“Vermilion is on the map because of the seniors here. For 18 years, the

town has hosted similar events to recognize the people here and their contributions to the community,” said Shirley McRobert, Town of Vermilion Senior Support Coordinator.

Town staff volunteered to barbeque and ser ve side dishes and dessert.

Mayor Caroline McAuley said, “What an amazing turnout celebrating Senior’s Week; they’ve built our town, and this is a small way of saying thank you.”

Vermilion RCMP Execute Search Warrant For Drugs Tarp Maker

Vermilion RCMP Submitted

On June 8, 2018, at a p proxim ately 12:30 a.m., Vermilion RCMP executed a Controlled Drugs and Substances Act (CDSA) search warrant at a residence in Vermilion. A female was arrested prior to the search warrant with-

out incident. Police seized cocaine and marihuana from the residence. 30-yearold Christy-Ann Schroeder of Vermilion has been charged with two counts of possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking. Schroeder has appeared before a Justice of the Peace and was released on an Undertaking.

Schroeder’s next court appearance is

scheduled for Monday, June 18, 2018, in Vermilion Provincial Court.

Members of the public who suspect drug or gang activity in their community can call local police, or contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477). Crime Stoppers is always anonymous.

As this matter is now before the courts no further information will be provided.

The Vermilion and Area Crisis Line will be hosting their 7th Annual Walk/ Run Event on June 21, at the Vermilion Provincial Park.

The Crisis Line has been operating since 1983, and local volunteers continue to raise funds to keep the service in our area. Local Crisis Line members continue to host the walk in memory of long-time Chairperson of the board Susan Howard who initiated the walk/run.

The Crisis Line is available to anyone of any age looking for support at any time, and their contact number is 1-800-661-4606.

Calls placed in Vermilion are answered in Edmonton. For those looking to volunteer and make a difference for someone in crisis or to donate, you can contact Judy at 780-853-5117 or Shauna at 780-853-6996.

“We started the walk to raise awareness that the Crisis Line is available. If we can only help one person, that would be amazing. For some people all they need is to have a listening ear,” said Chairperson, Amber Howard.

The walk welcomes everyone from all fitness levels and provides a 2-kilometer walk, 5-kilometer walk and run as well as a 10-kilometer run. The race will offer racers the option to be timed with the top

three finishers in each category receiving a medal. There will be water stations along the route, and refreshments to follow.

“Ideally we would like for everyone to register online, but we do understand that not everyone can do that, so they are welcome to register before the walk starting at 5:45 p.m.,” said Howard. Registration is $25, and Registrants are recommended to bring bug spray.

UNDERSTANDING HARDINESS ZONES Hardiness zones are geographical areas in which a given cate gory of plant can successfully be grown. The concept was first de­ve­ loped by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), and countries around the world have since adapted the system to their own territories. But while hardiness zo­n es can be quite useful, both for the casual gardener and the agricultural world, the mo­d el is far from perfect.

H a r d i n e s s zo n e s a r e l a r g e l y decided on a gi­ven plant’s ability to survive in each zone’s lowest winter temperature, without factoring in summer time data or snow cover.

As a re­s ult, t wo areas that have s imilar winter tem p eratures but vastly different amounts of snow — or summers that have nothing in common — can end up in the same

zone. With so many variable factors, hardiness zo­n es aren’t always true to reality.

Furthermore, climate change is an unpredic­t able force that modifies weather conditions around the world, which means that hardiness zones are always evolving. In 2012, the USDA updated its map of hardiness zones in the U.S. to reflect the warmer weather of the previous three decades, but even this newer data will likely be obsolete before long.

The bot tom line is that hardi ness zones are useful tools when it comes to choosing plants adapted to a certain area, but they should be taken with a grain of salt. Find o u t w h at yo ur area’s h ar d i n e s s zone is, and do your own research to see how accurate — or not — the assessment actually is.

Vermilion 4-H Beef Club – Another Season In The Books!

This season we started off in October at our first meeting. We had 30 members (12 new) plus 5 Cleavers.

Our Club President was Cavin Jones, with Kaylie Krys as our Vice President; as well as Ashley Jones as Secretary and Avary Hickman as Treasurer. We were led this year by Kris Lehmann, with the help of Assistant Leader Lee Selte. We always met once a month, usually in a Lakeland College classroom.

Our Cleavers, led by Nadine Farkash, usually had their own meeting s, as they slipped into another classroom. They learned everything from judging to making halters.

New to our club this year, we added a n ew pr o j e c t – B e ef Pr o d u c t i o n.

A few of our member s, along with some members from Outdoor Club and Sheep Club, were led by Project Leader Deanna Krys. They had a full season filled with guest speakers and workshops. This was a creative options project. The group did not have any animals but learned so much about beef production; including things like feed testing, nutrition, animal safety and Genomics DNA. This group held their Achievement Day April 17, presenting all they learned over the year. Great job for this new Project.

D e r e k J o n e s , o u r B e e f Pr o j e c t leader, had his work cut out for him with us having so many new members.

We had our weigh in at North Central L i ve s t o c k o n N ove m b e r 19. H e r e all our steer projects were weighed in, with some heifers coming for the ride to check out how they measured up. With our projects weighed in, our members then headed home to start feeding.

T h r o u g h o u t t h e ye a r, we h a d a

variety of guest speakers, field trips and workshops. We completed our C o m m u n i c a t i o n D a y i n J a n u a r y, followed by our Mock Achievement in April. Then our all-time favourite fundraiser – picking garbage on the Highway clean-up Day May 5! Then the time had arrived for all our work to come to a close and we had our Achievement Day on May 27.

Considering our club was so young, our Seniors lead the way and were awesome role models and leaders throughout the whole year, especially on Achievement Day. Once we came together Sunday morning for our 4-H pledge, and our group Judging competition, our Seniors led with their steers, followed by the Intermediates, then the juniors. Then came the Cleavers, they led their newborn calves. This group stole the hear ts of ever yone in the crowd. Next up was our female projects. Our numbers are small, but the animals are mighty. The heifers lead the way, followed by the 2-year-old and the 3-year-old cow/calf pairs.

After the show we started our Awards celebration with a potluck lunch with all the members, leaders, judges, sponsors, our family and friends. Then our Leaders presented us with all the awards we received throughout the year and through our Achievement Day Show. This was an awesome way to end a pretty good year. We are all looking forward to next year’s group (and animals)!!!

Walking Through Grief Submitted

June is the month that we honour and remember fathers. A father has a great responsibility in the role modell i n g o f t h e M a n i m a g e. T h ey a r e teacher, provider, fixer and need to be both strong and yet kind and compassionate and a good listener. In their strength, they are a safe place, not a place of fear or harshness. They are to be a balance of strength/gentleness and teacher/learner and fixer yet know their own limits. This is a big role, and some will be remembered for the positive role they modelled and some will remembered for their harshness. This is a time to reflect and to deal with

the negative relationships that are still causing mental anguish.

When the world is turned upside down and inside out the strongest of men can be shaken by the death of a parent, child, spouse, family member, friend or a relationship that ceases and is broken. When dreams die, there is the thought of what the future might have been or what the past could have been. When losses are experienced one is left vulnerable and naked, so to speak. How can strength be modeled in the midst of such loss and pain?

The myth in society is that big boys don’t cry and tough it out. That is an impossible demand when one’s heart is broken.

It is known there are different grieving patterns between man and woman and many factors that affect how one grieves. Take heart, there is no one way to grieve nor is there a right or wrong way or specific time to be over grieving. There are good coping skills to learn so that one never needs to stay stuck on their grief journey.

Never be afraid to reach out and learn some skills to help heal and become healthy and whole again. Don’t stuff your emotions but find a healthy way to work through your grief. (there is strength is what appears weakness).

Find understanding friends, read, and seek out a counsellor or support group.

Refrain from self-medicating with substances for it only delays the grief process. A process that will need to be dealt with, sometimes years later.

On June 1 and 2, several athletes competed in Provincial Track and Field events in Red Deer. Ty Stenhouse (Grade 11) competed in Long Jump and High Jump; Sydney Crowe (Grade 11) in 1500 Meter and 3000 Meter; Dylan Eremko (Grade 10) in 100 Meter, 300 Meter, Hurdles, and Zone Relay.

Samuel Ree (Grade 10) also qualified for Provincials but was unable to attend.

With exam season coming up in less than two weeks and another school year concluding in time for the summer

break, students are beginning to review their year’s academic work and prepare for finals. The final exam and diploma exam schedule is posted at the school and in the Marauder Newsletter.

St. Jerome’s School News

As tradition, Mr. Chase asked the grade twelve class to stand, he reminded them of the importance of keeping Christ close as they continue their journey and that they will always have a home at Holy Name Parish and St. Jerome’s School. The graduating students left the church to the applauded of the student body.

It was a beautiful day for a ball game on Thursday, June 7 as the St. Jerome’s Annual Slo-Pitch Tournament took place.

There were two divisions: grade six-eight competing against each other and grade nine-twelve making up teams. Teams walked over to the ball diamonds excited to see what the day would bring. Lots of fun was had during the day and a lunch of hot dogs cooked by the Knights of Columbus, Paul Corbiere, Larry Bingham, Ron Roth, and Diane Sanson, were enjoyed by all.

defeated Mr. Whelan’s team in the MiddleLevel division finals and Mr. McCormack’s team went undefeated throughout the tournament to become the High School division champs!

Butterflies!!! The grade three and two/ three classes have been patiently observing their caterpillars eat, cocoon to chrysalis, and finally on Thursday, become butterflies. The students have been enthralled with watching the life-cycle of the Monarch Butterfly and are excited to release these amazing creatures back into nature.

A big thank you to CWL for their generous donation of $300 to our “Feed the Hungry” program. This program provides a quick lunch for students who were not able to get a lunch together for the day, forgot their

lunch at home or on the bus, accidentally split their lunch or any other incident. This is a vital program at St. Jerome’s and we greatly appreciate the support of the CWL. Grade 10 students have become College students for the next three weeks during June. They will try three different trades; carpentry, interior design, welding, electrical, or mechanics. This experience is a wonderful opportunity for students to get hands-on experience and to explore skills and opportunities they don’t usually get to.

June is a very busy month at St. Jerome’s with exams, field trips, kindergarten graduations and orientations, and many other events. The school website, stjschool.org and our Facebook page are the best places to get information about these events.

Indigenous Culture Day took place at VES on June 1. Kevin John orchestrated an amazing day for us. We started at 10:30 acknowledging Treaty 6 territory, introducing guests, giving an offering of protocol (tobacco) and delivering the blessing (done in Cree

Drum Group Treaty 6 singers (Quinton Tootoosis, Shonan Awasis, Winterskye Baptiste, Shaun Singer, and Larron Oxebin) provided the music as the Pewasenakwan Primary School Dancers showed VES some of their dances.

Dorcean Ryane, Kiera Whitstone and Kiana Whitstone danced the Women’s Fancy Shawl Dance, Trina Waskewitch performed the Women’s Traditional Dance, Braden Pahtayken showed us his Chicken Dance, Austin Wolfe danced the Men’s Traditional Dance, and Teagan Dillon was the Men’s Fancy Dancer. At the end of the Pow Wow, the drum group played and sang while students, staff and guests were encouraged to get up for an Intertribal Dance as well as a Round Dance. A potluck meal made by VES staff was provided for our guests. After lunch, the students were grouped with their buddy grades and attended eight different stations. These stations included bannock making with Helen John, counting in Cree with Debbie Semeniuk, Indigenous artifacts with Kevin John and two of his daughters, Inuit games, traditional healing songs with LaBrea and Linda Harris, moss bag teachings with Hannah Semeniuk, jingle dress dancing with Emry John and drummer Edward Okanee, and traditional storytelling with Ivy MacDonald. We would like to send out a huge thank you to all involved in

Our last regular assembly for the school year was held on June 5. We started with an acknowledgement of Treaty 6, and the singing of O Canada and our VES song.

A standing ovation was given for our hot lunch ladies – Karen Hughes and Donna Niedzielski. The Grade 6 classes walked around the gym modeling the masks they made in their art classes. Mrs. Tupper talked about our June virtue of respect and Mrs. Tomkins informed us of our 16 539 AR points total.

May was a big month for VIBE. They had their annual Mental Health Art Gala and were pleased to connect with many families and members of the community and surrounding area. They had 54 entries from VES students. Five of these students placed in the top ten for their age group: Anna (1A), Emma (2B), Taylor A. (3B), Reese (5B), and Olivia (6A). Congratulations to everyone who entered.

The last day to return library books is June 15 and the last day to enter AR quizzes for student points is June 22. Students are able to use books from home and their classroom libraries to complete quizzes until June 22. Parent volunteers in the library for the past year have been phenomenal. Thank you to Deanna Zubiak, Shannon Leonard, Mellissa Gunther, Debra DeRoo, Katie Clevenger, Linda Romeo, Nikki Ryan, and the wonderful Library Club members. Library Club consists of students from Grade 4-6 who donate their time to help with shelving, cataloguing, and keeping the Learning Commons in order. These students also benefit by learning how a library works. Also, a special thanks to Lorraine Moet and Britt Feist who came in for a half day every week all year.

Graduation Day For Vermilion Outreach

Vermilion Outreach School recently celebrated their graduation with eight students being honoured.

Graduation is a highlight of our school year. This year there were eight graduates from Vermilion Outreach School.

The students and their family celebrated with a supper and ceremony on May 25. Trustee Jim King addressed the students on behalf of Buffalo Trail Public Schools and Thomas Laurence spoke on behalf of East Central Catholi c S c ho o ls. The re c ipient of the Vermilion Rotar y Sc holar ship was Jake Glasgow. Two students received the Vermilion Outreach Scholarship of $500 each sponsored by the Vermilion Youth Justice Committee. This year the award went to Brandi and Shayne.

We want to thank Jess Kennedy for the

wonderful pictures, Lasting Impression Catering for the great food, School of Hope for the use of the hall and all our guests and speakers.

The school year has been a strong year for our program. We had a large number of registrations and quickly we were helping around 35 students per d ay. Our po pulation is always diverse as students bring dif ferent talents, personalities, and goals. This year, the group of students connected very well with each other creating a lively atmosphere. The students took on an assortment of activities, many organized by Jodi our VIBE coach.

Several students became mentors for young people at Vermilion Elementary School. The mentors planned lessons with growth and learning for both the mentor and mentee. The highlight of the year was our Kindness Blooms

project where the students partnered with Cornerstone Coop and Decals a n d S i g n s to p r o m o te c o m m u n i t y members to help each other.

The graduation was an excellent opportunity to celebrate a great year.

Thanks to the all the organizations who supported us this past year: the Edge, Strikerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Bowling, Lakeland College, Vermilion Elementary School, Vermilion Public Library and our neighbors downtown. We would also like to thank the two school districts for the tremendous support from both Buffalo Trail Public Schools and East Central Catholics Schools, who operate the school in par tnership. Our program will be continuing to operate and provide educational oppor tunities for those who require a flexible, independent program beyond a traditional classroom.

The Myrnam 4-H Beef and Multi-Club hosted the Two Hills 4-H District Interclub Show & Sale on June 4th at the Myrnam Arena. We had a great day with all district members trying their best and showing off all of the hard work they’ve put into their animals and projects all year. Breakfast was sponsored by Crop Production Services, Sobey’s St. Paul, Grace Gardens Funeral Chapel, Maddigan Chrysler, Bumper to Bumper Two Hills and Cameron Mortgages. We had multi-club displays from the Myrnam and Willingdon clubs for our guests to enjoy in the lobby, with lunch sponsored by Richardson Pioneer. Our cattle judge was Owen Legaarden and our auctioneer was Miles Wowk, with ringmen Connor Yackimec and M.J. Wowk. Our emcees were Jade Yackimec and Laurel Trynchuk.

Myrnam 4-H Beef and Multi-Club members and brothers Taylor Pashulka and Riley Pashulka of Derwent, Alberta made a clean sweep of the Supreme Championship banners, winning Grand and Reserve Champion Steer and Supreme and Reserve Champion Females. The Pashulkas also swept the Senior Judging and Senior Showmanship categories and took home scholarships from the Logozar Memorial Awards. Their steers were among the four animals that took home the district’s Group of Four Award, together with another sibling pair from the Myrnam club, Jaeanna and Harlen Saskiw of Myrnam, Alberta.
