Mannville-Minburn-Innisfree Family and Community Support Services (MMIFCSS) hosted their 20th Annual “It Can’t Happen To Me” mock motor vehicle collision in Mannville on May 25.

Several area students, staff, and community members looked on with horror as fellow students, and emergency crews worked together to enact a roll-over at the Mannville School. “’It Can’t Happen To Me’ aims to connect attendees with people in the community that can help, and encourage people to avoid the risks of texting, drinking, or using drugs while driving,” said Jannette Riedel, Director of MMIFCSS. Zane Polishuk, Mannville School teacher and volunteer firefighter in Mannville gave a detailed account of the mock motor vehicle collision as it unfolded and said, “Often we don’t know how many patients are involved as a passing driver will call it in and then leave the scene. Sometimes it

takes a bit of time to find the patients who may be underneath other vehicles, and we use thermal imaging cameras to scan the ditches.

Both victims and department members can suffer from sleep disorders or posttraumatic stress symptoms following an emergency situation. In a small town there is a good chance that we know you, and with graduation season approaching, I cringe every time I hear the radio go off.”

Several presentations were also given at the Mannville Elk’s Hall including that of an emergency room, RCMP, Battle River Victim Services, Physiotherapy, Lakeland Funeral Home, and Alberta Health Services – Community Addictions and Mental Health in partnership with FSL and VIBE. Presentations also included roleplaying and an ambulance presentation at the Mannville Fire Hall along with a lunch provided by the Mannville Village Council.

“During the past 20 years, 900 students have experienced this project. Having 25 volunteers each year multiplied by 20

years equals 4,000 hours of volunteer service,” said Riedel.

Riedel thanked students for taking part, as well as the community partners for their support, and everyone took a moment

to listen to the song, “It Can’t Happen To Me,” by Charlie Major. Overall, a powerful impact was made, and students were able to examine their social responsibility and impact of their potential actions.

New Location For StudeBaker Industries Ltd.

As of May 1, Studebaker Industries Ltd. will be located five and a half miles north of Highway 16 on Range Road 80.

Having a shop location will allow the company to offer stationary services as well as continue their mobile mechanic repair for an area covering between Lloydminster, Vegreville, Wainwright, and Two Hills. The owner, Ryan Baker, has been in the industry since 2005, and with the help of his wife, Joanna, opened StudeBaker in 2011. He began with school buses and grew by fixing other buses, before expanding into trucks.

Seeing the need and demographics in the area, he then purchased a service truck and has received compliments on his ability to blend servicing both the old school and modern day technology.

“I definitely appreciate machinery. It’s always a challenge, but I like figuring things out and working with people,” said Baker.

Speakers included AAA Academy’s Rana Nakhal from Lloydminster, Alberta Apprenticeship’s John Klatt, Alberta Health Services-Addictions and Mental Health’s Keily Stetson, Alberta Labour’s Jean Vidal, and Alberta Works’ Joan Kaziechko.

“Cannabis Let’s Talk Alberta”

Two sessions of the “Cannabis Let’s Talk Alberta” meeting were held at the Vermilion Regional Centre on April 24.

Carol Coleman and Keily Stetson shared information and resources, and community members and representatives had the oppor tunity to openly discuss the new legislation and what they would like to see for Vermilion.

According to Alberta.ca, the province aims to limit the illegal market for cannabis; keep cannabis out of the hands of children; protect public health; and promote safety on roads, in workplaces, and in public spaces.

Cannabis retailer s will have to be located 100 meters away from schools and provincial health care facilities.

Legislation will only allow consumption of the leaf or bud portions of the plant; oils are currently not included.

The Province of Alberta has released that upon legalization, the minimum age for cannabis purchase or possession will be 18 years of age. Minors caught with 5g, or less will face sanctions similar to underage possession of alcohol or tobacco, and for amounts over 5g would continue being subject to federal criminal charges.

For adults, 30g will be the weight permitted for possession, and both in-store and online purchases. Adults can grow up to four plants per househ o l d p e n d i n g l an d l or d an d te n ant agreements or condo bylaws for grow-

ing and consumption. Pending these same arrangements, adults will be permitted to smoke, or vape cannabis at home or in some public places; but not in vehicles, any cannabis retail outlets, anywhere smoking or vaping tobacco is already prohibited, or in specific areas frequented by children including school and hospital properties and within five metres of skate parks, spray parks and playgrounds.

Driving while impaired by cannabis will result in license suspensions and vehicle seizures, and those with a Graduated Driver’s License will have zero tolerance.

Throughout the meetings, participants shared positive, negative or indif ferent cannabis use experiences of themselves or people they k n e w. S o m e d i s c u s s i o n i n c l u d e d health benefits, health risks, ensuring comfort and respect in different scenarios including at home or in the yard, at work, campgrounds, etc. Many were able to understand better other perspectives surrounding cannabis.

According to the Lower-Risk Cannabis Use Guidelines, Canada has among the highest cannabis use rates in the world and is common especially among adolescents and young adults.

They have well documented immediate and long-term risks from cannabis use. With brain development not completed until the mid 20’s, they noted mental health and education problems associated with cannabis

use in youth, and pulmonary-bronchial problems associated with smoking combusted cannabis.

Noting that ever yone is af fected differently, they recommend people not drive for six hours after use. Their recommendations include that individuals with a predisposition for or a firstdegree family member with psychosis and substance use disorders as well as pregnant women should refrain from using cannabis.

At the end of the sessions, quest i o n n a i r e s we r e s u b m i t te d vo l u n tarily to be pooled across Alberta and Canada into one final document. In Alberta, Lloydminster Drug Strategy and Alberta Health Service’s Provincial Addiction Prevention team part-

nered together and will be submitting the area information to Health Canada and the University of Victoria’s Canadian Institute for Substance Use Research.

Areas of responsibilit y following the federal legalization of cannabis, for municipalities, will include educat i o n, t a x at i o n, r e t a i l l o c at i o n a n d rules, public consumption, as well as land use and zoning. Councillor Pulyk mentioned the possibility after a municipal draft is made, that they may seek public opinion.

Overall, attendees enjoyed learning more about the subject and look forward to more details as municipalities divulge what will come into place in the area.

- Burn only natural vegetation or untreated wood products.

- Burn piles should be at least 50 feet from structures and 500 feet from any forest slash.

- Clear the area around the burn pile of any flammable debris.

- Keep firefighting equipment handy a connected water hose or at least five gallons of water and a shovel should be nearby.

- Don’t burn if it’s too windy to burn - if trees are swaying, flags are extended, or waves appear on open water it isn’t safe to burn.

- Be prepared to extinguish the fire if it

becomes a nuisance.

- Attend the fire until it is completely out.

- ATV’s and machinery must have proper exhaust systems when operated in or near forest land. Exhaust spark arresters are a requirement on certain machines.

- Call 911 if a fire becomes uncontrollable.

- Smoking should not be done while moving from one place to another in forest land. Make sure your butt is out - “dead out!” and don’t be foolish enough to toss cigarette butts out the car windows.

If we all do our due diligence, we can prevent fires caused by mankind (oops I mean by peoplekind LOL).

Healthy Chocolate Pudding

When selecting cocoa powder, it’s good to know that there are two types. One is called dutched, such as Frys and the other is natural, such as Hershey. When the cocoa powder is dutched, it has been treated with an alkalizing substance. This gives the chocolate a darker color and removes some of the bitterness. Unfortunately it removes many of the beneficial antioxidants. Natural cocoa, like Hersey has a lighter color, and is slightly bitter, but it is full of the beneficial antioxidants and nutrients that have caused heart doctors to advise their patients to eat dark chocolate.

Studies have shown dark chocolate to be heart healthy by reducing the risk of heart disease and stroke. Chocolate consumption helps to raise good cholesterol and reduce bad cholesterol. A compound in chocolate called anandamide delivers feel good bliss, reducing depression, while also stimulating areas of the brain responsible for memory, a positive mood and higher thought processes. Scientists at Harvard

Medical School recommend drinking two cups of cocoa a day to help preserve memory and keep the brain healthy.

Stevia is a naturally sweet plant that is now being used as a sugar substitute. It is a great alternative to replace all or most of the sugar. I have found that in this recipe, a very small amount of sugar, added the right amount of sweetness when combined with the Stevia.

Egg yolks provide additional thickening, while adding lots of extra nutrition. The egg yolk is the most nutritious part of the egg. Eggs are a good source of cholesterol, which our bodies need to make hormones.

Coconut oil is a natural saturated fat that increased good cholesterol and helps to convert bad cholesterol to good cholesterol.

Coconut oil is also known to be beneficial to the thyroid, which controls metabolism. So yes, you can get healthier eating dessert, well at least this dessert.

Healthy Chocolate Pudding 3 cups unsweetened almond or coconut milk 2 egg yolks (optional)

3 tablespoons cornstarch 2 tablespoons cocoa powder 1 tablespoons sugar 6 single serve packages of Stevia 1 teaspoon vanilla 2 tablespoons coconut oil.

Combine all the ingredients in a heavy bottomed saucepan. Whisk all the ingredients together until blended, over medium low heat. I use the 4 setting on an electric stove. You should stir this frequently, but not constantly, as it required brief periods without stirring to gather the required heat to thicken. Once the mixture begins to bubble, stir constantly to prevent the pudding from scorching or burning. If the pudding is to thin it has not been cooked enough. If it is too thick, it has been overcooked. Stir in the coconut oil at the end. Pour into 4 or 5 desert bowls. What can go wrong with this recipe includes insufficient stirring, which allows the cornstarch to separate and fall to the bottom of the pot, which will cook into a lumpy mess. Also too light weight of a pot makes it difficult to cook any milk and starch dish without burning or scorching.

I do think spring has finally decided to arrive, it was a long wait, and it is now the four th week of April, almost overnight decent weather has remembered us, and the snow is disappearing fast. Again almost overnight with the snow disappearing, yard work appears with a big list, but I am looking forward to getting through that list quickly, I even had a lone mosquito buzz me, I wasn’t sure if it was a nuisance or a welcome sound.

The Robins are singing, and big flocks of geese are flying north, the only thing I haven’t heard yet is the song of the evening frogs, it is then spring will officially arrive for me, last year at this time we had leaves on the trees.There is green out there as the grass is quickly turning in spots, I still haven’t seen my spring Crocus yet, but the snow was so deep we couldn’t get out there, I have a plan to take a couple of older pups out and look for antler sheds this weekend. The Crocus, the first flower of spring is a beautiful sight; it is a stunning flower and never ceases to amaze me, sometimes blooming right out of a snow bank, I will get to see one this weekend if not sooner I am itching to get out there.

A good friend sent me a couple of outstanding pictures of the great Sharptail grouse dance. When the time is right each spring they will return to the same spot and perform their amazing dance; I went out early one morning a couple of springs ago to watch this spectacular ritual. It is something that only happens here in the Midwest Alberta, so if you get a chance to watch this it is worth the loss of a few hours of sleep, contact one of your local wildlife societies for more information.

Around The Campfire

My new puppies are not so happy with the disappearance of the snow and are wondering what’s up with this heat wave for them; they are already doing a lot of sleeping in the midday shade looking for a cooler spot to nap.

The bigger dogs are already swimming in the now full duck pond, the quick runoff of melting snow filled it very fast, they love this pond and spend a lot of time there, in between their adventurous search for field moles in the back 40. The older dogs are also catching more mice than all the farm kitty’s catch in a year I am sure, the mice that were trapped under all the snow for so many months are now everywhere, so I am happy with the dogs work.

The new litter of pups are very active now and almost fully weaned from Momma and are eating like grizzly bears fresh out of the den; they can pack away a lot of food now that they know how to chew on things. They seem to change every day even though I am home and spend almost all my time with them, in looks, size and personality’s, several are getting huge and very woolly, others are quite the clowns with adventurous personalities.

They have full run of a huge kennel and are itching to make a break into the big world, every time I open the kennel dog one or two try their best to escape, but although they are ready for adventure Momma herds them back in, she is not ready. I have been introducing Daddy and the full-grown dogs to them slowly, and they are all getting acquainted with each other, soon we will have several of those fur balls joining us on many walks every day.

We have found outstanding forever homes for all the pups we were willing to let go, which will get to be with us until they are eight weeks or older. So, I am enjoying them while I can, I wanted to get a group picture of them in the dogsled

with some snow, but that disappeared too quickly with the nice weather.

My pups, Thunder and Lighting, and the two the wife claimed Sir Snownose and Princess Pututi are all spoiled already as are the rest, but until the others go to their forever homes all will be treated with equal affection and time.

to home. That being said, I will still enjoy it as the company is very affectionate and fun to be with, folks with the longest winter-like conditions on record I don’t think I have to tell you to get out there and enjoy!

When The Smoke Clears The funny thing about work is if you thoroughly enjoy what you do... you will never have to work a day in your life!!!

Pumping Water And Pumping Tires

It never ceases to amaze me some times how preparing for, or perhaps even knowing, that something is about to happen that we can still be taken by surprise when it actually does. Maybe it has something to do with the first two times checking, everything fine and nothing happens, and the third time “boy crying wolf’ has set in your thinking and you lean your head out the door to see where the wolf is…and he promptly has your head for lunch. Well…at least that was how I felt after taking down and apart the fire detector to change a battery (not the actual reason but a

reasonable facsimile) and with it firmly in hand testing it was receiving no auditory response. Needless to say in leaning in closer to examine it, my wife and I got firmly caught in its cleverly laid trap when it then went off abruptly on the next button press and scared both of us into jumping out of our socks…and both into a fit of laughter. LOL indeed.

S o i t i s t h at s pr in g t im e c o m e s around and you expect certain things to happen…themes of the season as it were. If you haven’t had to deal with water in your yard you might be one of the few that hasn’t. Certainly pumping water is one of those themes and seems self-evident…melting snow is accumulating in one place where you don’t want it and the water needs to go somewhere else you do. As it happens the sump

pump the last couple weeks had ‘cried wolf’ a couple times on us by allowing a small amount of water to build up in the cold room but not really causing any grief after getting it going again. So it was that not having to retrieve a jar of pickles (or any other reasonable facsimile) from the cold room for a couple days coincided with two warmer days and the next trip for raspberry jam soaked my socks the first step off the bottom stairs.

Laughing out loud I was not, as I chastised the pump (and myself) in putting that water someplace else more appropriate.

Well having dealt with that, on to theme #2: pumping tires and not of the “inflate the ego” kind, although at the end of things there was some of that. Spring time usually means a long list of tasks

which include bringing dormant items out or back to life…such as devices of a mechanical nature that often have wheels attached. Never seems to fail that I’m looking for an air compressor (or complaining it isn’t working) the first 2 weeks days of spring I spend any decently measurable time outside. So in short order after swapping off the winter tires for summer on and making sure they were sufficiently inflated to do the job, next on the list was a flattened lawn tractor and a few bicycle tires. And after one of my daughters stuck with me through all those jobs including running the impact wrench and the jack, any 11 year old that could do that, and learn how to change not one but eight tires in the process, deserved to have her tires pumped a little too.

Councillor Clint McCullough Receives Recognition

He was very active in building relationships with not only his Alberta municipal colleagues but among his peers in the other TCYHA Provinces as well. Lakeland Student Among Top Apprentices In Alberta

Beloin took Lakeland’s parts technician 1st period online in 2013, and then finished his 2nd and 3rd period at the Vermilion campus. He received his journeyman certificate in 2017.

“I knew I wanted to get into a trade and I was aware that Lakeland offered courses. My experience there was great.

Lakeland’s facilities are good but the instructors were great.

They care about their students and are passionate about what they are teaching. To sum up my experience, it comes down to the staff and instructors - they made the biggest influence on my education.”

His instructors were Randy Hobbis, Mark Okrainetz and Chris Noster.

(Vermilion, Alta.) – Parts Technician Lance Beloin was among 61 recipients to receive the 2017 Top Apprentice Award from the Apprenticeship and Industry Training Board.

Beloin received the award on April 13 during the 21st annual Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training Board Awards. The Top Apprentice Awards honour the apprentices in each trade who achieved the highest overall marks in their final period of training and received strong employer recommendations.

“We are proud of all our students and when students like Lance are awarded top honours in Alberta, it shows the level of dedication and commitment from him during his time as an apprentice. I just want to congratulate him and everyone else who was involved in his education.

It is truly a special relationship between the apprentice, the employer and Lakeland College,” says Dave King, dean of Lakeland’s School of Trades and Technology.

Beloin, who is employed by Vermilion Chrysler Ltd. in Vermilion, Alta., says he’s honoured to have been selected.

“I was quite happy and surprised. I am very proud that the dedication that I, and my instructors, put into my education has awarded me with the honor of being the top apprentice parts tech in 2017,” says Photo submitted

“I must be doing something right. I want the students to learn and have fun in class. I use my previous work experience and experience with students – students can teach you so much – and pass on that knowledge to all my new classes when they come in. I strive to provide a positive learning experience for all my students,” says Hobbis.

A nominee for a Top Instructor Award performs beyond the requirements of the average instructor; has excellent presentation skills; and is fair, friendly and firm, according to Alberta Advanced Education.

“Randy has a huge impact on all his students year after year. He is very passionate about his trade and he relays that passion to his students,” says King.

The Vermilion Wellness Coalition hosted an Owls In Alberta session complete with a walk in the Vermilion Provincial Park on April 26.

Lakeland College Ornithology Instructor, Chris Olsen, led the discussion for approximately 30 participants of all ages.

According to Olsen, there are 11 owl

species commonly found in Alberta. He shared their different colouring patterns, and physical adaptations that often compliment a sit and wait hunting style. He noted that they are mostly nocturnal, even though some can be seen more active during daylight.

“The Great-Horned Owl is the provincial bird, and a fierce predator that is widely adaptive. It has substantial lateral ear tufts

with horizontal vermiculations (wavy lines) across its abdomen. They feed on small mammals, including rabbit, muskrat, cat, or skunk. They are the most heavily bodied owl in North America,” said Olsen.

Olsen named many others and pointed out that the Burrowing Owl is really endangered, and is the only burrow dwelling

Hobbis has been working at Lakeland as an instructor for parts technician and auto service technician since 1986. Over the last 32 years, he says Beloin is one of those students a teacher hoped to teach every year.

“Lance is a very sharp student. He knew his stuff and what he didn’t know, he accepted it.

He had a positive attitude and was sharp academically.”

Beloin added, “I had Randy as an instructor in my second and third years, and he was very dedicated to my education. He really cares and it showed in his instruction.”

Hobbis was nominated once before and won the North Region Top Instructor for Parts Technician in 2010. Since 1987, 10 Lakeland students have won the Top Apprentice Award for parts technician.

Participants enjoyed learning about the different kinds of owls in the area, as well as hot chocolate, tea and cookies as they walked through the park listening and looking for owls.

LANDSCAPING AGAINST WILDFIRES Ever y year in Canada, wildfires devastate an average of 2.5 million hectares of land. While the sheer destructive power of this force of nature isn’t something we humans have much control over on a large scale, there are a few measures individuals can take to help protect their property against fire. Here are

a few tips for fire-resistant landscaping.

Maintain a defensible space The areas closest to your home and other structures are most critical when it comes to defending against fire; this buffer zone of sorts is known as “defensible space.” Depending on the size of your proper ty, your

defensible space should be between 10 and 30 metres surrounding your home.

Keep it clean There should be as lit tle plant fuel as possible within your defensible space. Get rid of any dead vegetation, including dead shrubs and trees, dried flowers and grass, and fallen leaves and needles. Move piles of firewood outside the defensible space during fire season.

Keep it lean Landscaping should be minimal within your defensible space.

A grass lawn with few trees and shrubs is a good barrier against fire

— plants that grow low to the ground are preferable. Trees should be at least three metres apar t at crown level. Prune away any bran c hes within three metres of your home or other structure.

Keep it green Proper irrigation is essential for plants within the defensible space.

Inspect your plants regularly and get rid of any dry or dead material.

Choose fire-resistant varieties with low water needs, such as herbaceous plants (bulbs, groundcovers, annual and perennial flowers) and deciduous trees. Avoid evergreens, which are highly flammable.

Dancing with heart, the Vermilion Dance Association members held their 2018 recital at the Lakeland College Alumni Theatre in Vermilion on April 28.

Instructors, Miss Taylor Phillips and Miss Sidney Kay-Uden along with dancers of all ages performed a variety of solo, duet and group ballet, lyrical, modern, Irish, tap, jazz, and hip-hop dances. Each performance captivated the audience and received abundant applause.

Municipal Conservation Coordinator The County of Two Hills Agricultural Service Board is seeking a highly motivated person to join our team as Municipal Conservation Coordinator.

Key qualifications include a Post-Secondary Degree or Diploma in Agricultural or Environmental Sciences (with equivalent experience considered). The Coordinator will deliver the Agricultural/Environmental programs set out by the Agricultural Service Board. Expertise in riparian area management, soil conservation, grazing management, nutrient management, climate change, and extension activities would be an asset.

Key components of the position include: • Aid in development and adoption of management practices to improve environmental sustainability of agriculture producers.

• Develop and recommend practices to help landowners better manage their land and water resources.

• Assist landowners with developing Environmental Farm Plans and support Growing Forward applications.

• Liaise with agribusiness and industry and coordinate and conduct environmental programming.

• Use tours, workshops, written articles, and one-on-one work (including farm calls) to inform producers about environmentally sustainable agricultural practices.

• Coordinate and administer an agricultural recycling program.

• Implement and co-ordinate the ALUS program with County residents.

J. R. students’ life experiences have been enhanced and reinforced with several field trips and off-campus visits lately!

This year’s senior high Art students spent a day in Edmonton on April 18 along with our bus-driving principal, Mr. Bates and myself. Our first stop was at the brand new Allard Hall, the MacEwan’s fine arts building downtown. We saw the modern structure in its first year running as well as the students’ graduate exhibition displaying their favorite finished pieces. For lunch we got in touch with our Japanese side, eating at Mikado trying various sushi dishes like salad, rolls, nigiri and sashimi, bento boxes, and Japanese drinks. Most of the afternoon was spent in the arts district of 124 St where we visited nearly a dozen galleries. Before returning home, we stopped off at Delta Art and Drafting where many of us fulfilled art supply lists of “wants” and “needs”.

Mr. Maier’s Grade 10 Social Studies class visited Blue Quills First Nations College last week. There they learned that it was built in the 1930’s and originally a church-operated residential school before becoming Canada’s first Indigenous-controlled education centre.

Grade 11 and 12 Multimedia students Lleyton Bates, Meaghan Stewart, Megan Holm, Tessa Hartwell, Kyle Murray and Brandon McGuckin toured Newcap Station in Lloydminster with Mrs. Zelenka last week. There they saw behind the scenes of TV broadcasting, the radio room, and got to see how pre- and post-production technologies such as green screen work.

Our Sr. High Spartans Badminton team participated in Zones Badminton on Wednesday, April 24. Congratulations to Shae Collins and Janyl Bardoel who won gold and will represent St. Jerome’s at Provincials this weekend. Also congratulations to Cody Jackson and Trista Minish for winning bronze in Mixed Doubles. We are so proud of all our Spartan competitors for their efforts! Once again, many thanks to Mr. Wasylik, Mr. Lewin and Mr. Martin for their tips, tricks and strategy sessions!

Congratulations to our Jr. High Badminton players as they competed at the ECACS Championships in Wainwright, last week. We are so proud of your efforts and attitudes!! Special acknowledgements going to these Spartans: Clay Corbiere and Landon Reiniger for winning Gold in Boys Doubles, Kaiden Chase for Winning Gold in Boys Singles, Dexter Fajarito for Winning Silver in Boys Singles and Dixie Allen for Winning Silver in Girls Singles.

Each baby was given a food they had experienced before, and one they had not yet tried. It was exciting to watch baby Hendrix’s first reaction to lemons, and Baby Blakely’s first reaction to yogurt.

The 2018 Alberta Regional Skills Competition took place on April 27 at Lakeland College, Vermilion. Cavin Jones, Meaghan Stewart and Lleyton Bates, Elizabeth Irvine, and Austin Axley demonstrated their abilities in welding, video production, baking and carpentry respectively.

On April 18, eight students competed at a school-level competition to represent J. R. Robson School at the upcoming annual Superintendent Public Speaking Competition. Speakers included Haley Tovell, Madison Tovell, Maren Abuzukar, Carter Farrell, Cody Westling, Alexis Garnier, Breanne Gourley, Ziqi Shang,Jocelyn Brady.

Congratulations to Carter for third place, Maddy for second place, and to​A ​ lexis who competed in the Grade 7-9 division and represented J. R. Robson on April 27.

Mrs. Hart’s Grade 10 Career and Life Management class recently invited guest speakers to talk about “real life” topics: Megan Balaneski from Advantage Insurance & Investment Advisors Inc. spoke of the importance of investing wisely; Constable Melanie Flynn from Vermilion’s RCMP detachment talked about distracted driving, Mrs. Laryssa Speck, our VIBE coach, spoke about employee rights, healthy relationships, and 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens; and Danielle White from Lakeland College talked about post-secondary opportunities and planning.

Students’ art were recently featured at the district’s fine arts night, “MAD” (Music, Art, Drama, Dance) this year hosted at Wainwright High. Over 50 Marauder artworks were on display there. Other student talents shown off at the annual event included junior and senior bands.

Wednesdays with Mr. Maier and so has track and field training. Grade 7, 8 and 9 badminton athletes competed at Highway 16 tournament finals on Thursday April 26.

Grade 7 single Amaya Myhovich, Grade 8 single Caleb Ree, and doubles teammates Kamryn Oddan and Adyson Bates attended J. R. Robson hosted District badminton on April 19. As doubles, senior boys Denver Budzilka and Tanner Shaw won gold, seniors Logan Stepanick and Morgan Tkachuk won silver, juniors Alyx Ward and Jackson Livingstone won silver. Single players included intermediate player Jordan Jones winning silver, intermediate Quentin Rehmann winning silver, and junior Kent Jackson winning silver. For the third year in a row, Coach Mr. Campbell took these athletes to the next round in Lac La Biche to qualify for Zones on April 25. There Logan

and Morgan won 3rd in their pool, Jordan Jones was fourth overall, Jackson and Alyx won Bronze, Denver and Tanner will take their silver win to Provincials, and Kent’s silver will send him to Provincials. “We get to bring home the 2A Zone Banner this year,” Coach Campbell proudly declares.

Provincials will take place in Grimshaw.

The 2017-18 yearbook is currently under production and captures the smiles, memorable moments, and achievements of the Marauder crew. Students may purchase their own hardcover, 68-page full-color copy of their own for a limited time. Order forms are available at the office.

was held on Thursday, April 26. There were numerous Jr. and Sr. High students who bravely shared their amazing talents. Singing, dancing and various musical instruments were played during the show. The 2018 show was kicked off with a performance from one of our School Board Trustees - Thomas Laurence!

“Teacher-Look-ALike Day” took place on Tuesday, April 24. Students and staff dressed up like their favourite “teacher”, with Mr. Wasylik being the most popular to emulate. We had many Mr. Sader and Mr. Chase duplicates as well. Terrific effort was demonstrated by all the students who dressed up trying to imitate the teacher of their choice.

On May 2, Albertans are invited to wear a hat to raise awareness of the importance of good mental health. St. Jerome’s Catholic School will relax their “No hat” policy and encourage students and teachers to build understanding by wearing hats to school.

Not only were there signs of spring outside our school, but within Mrs. Roth’s Grade 4 class, as well. In conjunction with their Science learning, these curious Spartans planted bean seeds and will watch

them grow over the weeks to come.

Our Leadership 10 class has been busy organizing activities and building projects to improve the already wonderful atmosphere within our school. One group has planned a 2-week ball hockey tournament for our Sr. High Spartans to take part in during their lunch hours. Another has created a schedule for our Grade 6-8 Spartans to compete in a Dodgeball Tourney - for “House” points. While a third group is hosted a Spring Dance on Friday, April

20 for students from the community from grade 5-8! These hard working gals have reserved the gym, booked a DJ, planned a pop/candy store, created tickets and sold them during their lunch hours! Also, they have touched base with Mr. Decker for cleanup plans. Whew!

St. Jerome’s will be joining the community of St. Olga’s Ukrainian Church on Thursday, May 3 to celebrate mass at 10:30 a.m. We always appreciate the warm welcome they extend to us when we visit.

to the new food. People are the same in many ways, but there are also many ways in which we are all different. We all have a unique temperament which affects everything about us, including eating. We are so lucky to have our Tiny Teachers in Roots of Empathy to demonstrate these important lessons to us.

Mrs. Zaharko’s 1B class had a blast collaborating with their 4B buddy class to construct a boat using recycled materials. It was the perfect project to celebrate Earth week as well as to kick off their new

science unit called Building Things. Pairs worked together to build, test and make modifications to their design. Floating them in the school yard puddles was the best part by far.

Grade 6A has been learning all about latitude and longitude coordinates as a mini map skills unit. They have been learning this skill in order to go Geocaching during some of their DPA (Daily Physical Activity) periods. They are excited to venture out to find of some of Vermilion’s Geocaches.

May is the month we recognize mothers. What are all the emotions and memories the word Mother evokes? Are all thoughts of Mother positive? If one should say, NO does that cause feeling of guilt when we think of how we should feel. Do we stuff feelings or hide real emotions?

There will be memories to share, but there will be pain to be felt upon thinking of Mother and Mother’s Day. For the Mother who has experienced the death of a child, whether prior to birth or in their senior years the pain or loss remains and both are often overlooked in their loss and painful memory journey.

For the mother who experiences the “death of a dream” of being a parent and

are often overlooked, as well, and they are expected to carry on with no sense of sadness and anger at their loss.

For the child who has experienced the death of a mother when they are very young to the adult child who feels very much like the small child, abandoned and needing that nurturing person in their lives.

For the child or adult child who has experienced the death of a Grandma, who was filling the role of mother and grandmother, that child experiences a double loss, of both Grandparent and Mother.

For some, the loss of mother will not cause feelings of sadness but rather pain, anger, guilt, and blame as they remember abuse, neglect, fear, abandonment and physical and emotional

neglect. They will also experience the death of a dream of what their mother could have been.

It is a good time to remember Mother, to recognize and address the emotions that surround the name Mother, and recognize that each person is on a unique journey, just as each person’s relationship with their mother was unique.

What can be done with all the emotions that death loss and dream loss evoke? The anger, guilt, blame and sometimes shame that is carried.

Sometimes these emotions are carried for many years dragging a person down and causing not only physical illnesses but mental anguish.

This year could we give ourselves permission to accept the emotions and

will represent us at the Superintendent’s Public Speaking Competition.

On April 13 Vermilion Chrysler held a Tailgate BBQ in support of the Humboldt Broncos.

With the generous donations from attendees of the BBQ Vermilion Chrysler raised $385, Vermilion Chrysler matched the donation and auctioned a print to raise an additional $300 for a total of $1070. All proceeds were donated to Stars. Photo submitted

Cheque Presentation Mannville Golf Wes Sargent on behalf of himself and his two sisters, Marabee and Jae, have donated $1000 to the Mannville Riverview Golf Course & RV Resort, in honour of their late father Jim Sargent. This spring marks 25 years since construction began at the golf course which is located in the Vermilion River valley. Jim was willing to sell the land to the Village of Mannville to support the development of a golf & camping facility. This project has evolved from the original 9 holes and 12 campsites to present which boasts a 63 site, camping facility to compliment the golf course. You don’t have to be a golfer to enjoy the golf course and all it has to offer. Come sit on our deck and enjoy the view while having a beverage of choice and experience what the menu has to offer. The monies will be used in enhancing the facility.

National Summer Safety Week – The Importance Of PFD’s On The Water

Water-related deaths aren’t preceded by a lot of warning. Drowning can happen in seconds. And fortunately, Canadians seem more aware of this fact in recent years and the statistics continue to trend in the right direction.

In 2014, 428 people were reported as having drowned. This figure, according to the Chief Coroner and Medical Examiner’s office of Canada, is the lowest reported amount of water-related fatalities in 25 years.

Despite the statistics demonstrating a gradual reduction, drowning continues to be a serious issue, being the third leading cause of unintentional fatalities worldwide. The Canada Safety Council is marking this year’s National Summer Safety Week – May 1 to 7 – by reminding Canadians to exercise caution around water.

Water safety, in general, can be a wide-reaching topic. Many factors play into each and every incident, including the use of personal floatation devices, the type of body of water, the victim’s age, gender and more. The activity on the water can also play a part, as well as whether the person ever had any intention of even being in the water.

With all these elements at play, there’s a lot to unpack. The best place to start the discussion, then, is to focus on where the majority of drownings occur – during recreational activities. These account for 61 per cent of all drownings, with the most common activities being swimming, walking/running/playing near water and boating, including kayaks, powerboats and fishing boats.

Personal floatation devices (PFDs) are essential any time you board a boat.

And while Canadian law requires that you have a lifejacket on board for each

person on board, the Canada Safety Council highly recommends not only that you have the PFD, but that you wear it at all times. A PFD won’t help you if it’s sitting on the seat while you’ve fallen in the water.

When purchasing your PFD, make sure it’s approved either by Transport Canada, the Canadian Coast Guard or Fisheries and Oceans Canada. Regularly check that the fastening devices work properly and are unencumbered.

You should also invest in swimming lessons. Aside from being an important life skill, knowing even the basics of swimming can make the difference in an emergency situation. Your children, too, should be taught to swim from a young age.

As proud members of the Canadian Drowning Prevention Coalition, the Canada Safety Council knows that drowning remains one of the most avoid-

able types of fatalities. It’s through awareness, education and pre-emptive safety measures that you can do your part to help keep drowning at bay.

Knights Of Columbus Pancake Breakfast

The Knights of Columbus members w e r e b u s i l y p r e p a r i n g p a n c a ke s , sausages, scrambled eggs, and hash browns for the buffet-style pancake breakfast while attendees enjoyed their breakfast and visiting at the final breakfast of the season on April 29 at the Father Cordeau center at St. Jerome’s school.

The Knights of Columbus hold their

Pancake Breakfast the last Sunday of each month from the end of September until the end of April with only a break during the Christmas season.

Proceeds from each monthly pancake breakfast are donated to different organizations, and this month the proceeds will go to the St. Jerome’s Kindergarten class.

“I would like to say thank you to the Knights of Columbus for donating to us.

We use the funds to help with field trips

and supplies for our classroom. I would also like to thank the parent volunteers that are here today, “ said Kindergarten teacher Arianne Lewin.

The breakfast has been very successful this year as with previous years.

“Wayne Hemauer and I are co-chairs for the pancake breakfast, and we would like to thank the community for all their support; we are pleased to be able to support so many groups,” said Jim Sanson.

Erin Kay Shines In Vermilion

Her friendly personality sparkled on and off stage as Erin Kay was hosted by the Vermilion Folk Club at the Vermilion Legion on April 28.

Kay had previously performed in Vermilion with other artists, but wowed the audience during her “Silver and Gold” CD release performance. A mystical instrumental opening drew the crowd in right away.

In March, Kay had a lot of fun attending Juno Week in Vancouver, but admitted just how much she appreciates small towns and said that even with the nice weather, she wouldn’t rather be anywhere else than on stage in Vermilion.

“I was very excited, and everyone was so attentive. I feel there is a lot of gratitude in a small town,” said Kay who is from William’s

Lake, British Columbia.

Born in Edmonton, Kay now also resides in Edmonton where she flourishes as a performer and a mother. Singing and playing edgy, roots/Americana music, Kay has received compliments depicting her as a mix of Janis Joplin and Joni Mitchell.

Able to turn her challenging experiences into positive messages, Kay is very encouraging with her lyrics, and even worked to support women and children during her tour via performances at “She’s So Brave” and “I Am Enough” events in Calgary and Edmonton.

Her warm, lofty voice and genuine personality kept the audience engaged, including the Vermilion Folk Club’s Rod MacMillan who said, “We were thrilled to have Erin again. What a powerful voice, and a powerful writer! We would like to

Canada’s Conservatives Issue Statement On The Prime Minister’s Defence Of Anti-Trans Mountain Expansion Campaign Funding

Ottawa, Ontario – Shannon Stubbs, C o nser vative S had ow M inister for Natural Resources, issued the following statement to d ay reg arding the Prime Minister’s defence of Canada Summer Jobs Program funding being used to support an anti-Kinder Morgan pipeline campaign: “Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said a year ago, and again last week, he wants to “phase out” Canada’s energy sector. His policies and laws and have caused more energy investment to leave Canada than under any other Prime Minister in seventy years. And

yesterday, Canadians learned he’s using their tax dollars to fund antienergy activists’ efforts to block the Trans Mountain Expansion.

“The Liberal government is funding a position that is explicitly dedicated to ‘stop the Kinder Morgan pipeline’.

People who want to shut down this pipeline don’t care about the jobs that will be lost, or the families broken by their actions.

“Justin Trudeau should champion Canada’s energy sector and the men and women who work in it. But from day one, he has failed their families and continues to threaten their livelihoods. The Trans Mountain Expansion

is at serious risk, but he still has no plan. “ U n d e r t h e L i b e r a l s , C a n a d a ’s energy sector has lost more than $80 billion in investment, and more than 110,000 workers have lost their jobs.

ronment Minister announced that they would be coordinating a panel to deal with environmental concerns. This kind of action is long overdue, and yet another example of their inaction and failure of leadership to ensure that the expansion can go ahead.

“Canada’s Conservatives will keep fighting for the hardworking men and women in the energy sector across the country, and for First Nations communities who pursue economic opportunities and social benefits through responsible resource development.

Vermilion 4H Club – Mock Achievement Day

Children had fun preparing their animals during the Vermilion 4H Beef Club’s Mock Achievement Day at the Lakeland College Equine Centre on April 29.

“The children have really worked hard all year. They’ve spent approximately 190

days feeding, leading, and caring for their animals and are all looking forward to Achievement Day,” said Chris Lehman.

Lehman is the General Leader, and Lee Selte is the Assistant Leader of the club.

grooming methods. Throughout the day, they taught 4H members how handle their cattle in the ring, as well as how to clip and fit their calves - meaning to cut and glue hair in the right way. Several leaders and family members volunteered to assist throughout the day, and 4H member, Ashley Jones said, “I love helping the younger children.

The Vermilion 4H Beef Club will host a Club Show on May 27, followed by an Interclub Heifer Show at the Vermilion Agricultural Grounds. On May 28, the festivities will continue with an Interclub Steer Show and Sale.

The North Eastern Alberta Hockey League (NEAHL) Annual General Meeting was held on Saturday, April 14 in Vermilion.

The NEAHL membership, comprised of 26 Associations representing approximately 100 hockey teams ranging from Atom to Midget players, were encouraged to wear Jerseys at the AGM in support of the tragic Humboldt incident. It was well received, and participation was a great success by the members and league executives. At this year’s AGM, the North Eastern Alberta Hockey League also made a motion to donate $5000 to the Humboldt Broncos Junior A Hockey Organization. Photo submitted

Town of Vermilion Submitted

On April 24, 2018, Council for the Town of Vermilion gave 2nd and 3rd reading to the 2018 Tax Rate Bylaw which gives approval to the 2018 Operating and Capital Budget. Council wrestled with the need to address inflation, the carbon tax, low assessment growth, and planning for the replacement of aging infrastructure. Council also responded to the need to encourage sustainability and growth in local business.

The Town of Vermilion collects the education tax on behalf of the province and remits them to the province but has no control over establishing the School Tax Rate. The Provincial School requisitions have increased 2.73 per cent a $45,207 increase from 2017 to 2018. This is after a 9 per cent increase the two previous years.

In total the Town of Vermilion tax payers will pay $1,703,838 for School Requisitions in 2018. In December 2017, Council had proposed a 5 per cent increase in both the residential and non residential municipal tax rate at first reading. Council revisited the budget and was able to reduce the municipal portion to 2.7 per cent residential and 3.8 per cent non residential. As a result, the combined (municipal + school) tax rate for residential properties is 2.23

Mayor McAuley stated “We are fortunate to have reduced some of our expenses to accommodate a reduced tax rate from the original budget review. Therefore the Municipal tax dollars collected was reduced from a potential 5.45 per cent increase to a 3.52 per cent increase.”

The municipality is collecting $5,134,347 for municipal services. In addition, Council has committed to $22,211,964 in capital expenditures including the $16 million Waste Water Treatment Facility of which is support by $10 million in Government Grants ($8 mil Federal, $2 mil Provincial).

The assessment increase includes growth and market value increases for

the Town of Vermilion at a negligible 1per cent. As a result, most properties will see a small increase in their 2018 taxes.
