Firefighting Alumni Wins Olympic Gold

John Morris, a Lakeland College Emergency Training Centre Alumni, won a 2018 Olympic Gold Medal for Curling Mixed Doubles in Pyeongchang, Korea on February 13.

The win made teammates Morris and Kaitlyn Lawes the first curlers to bear two Olympic Gold Medals; his first acquired in Vancouver - 2010, and hers in Sochi - 2014.

Instructor, Ed Gadbois, remembers Morris from when he completed the Firefighter Training Program in 2006 and was named Lakeland’s Distinguished Alumnus in 2011.

According to Gadbois, during Morris’

course in Vermilion, he had asked for a Friday off of classes.

“Because of the itinerary of the course being so demanding, I recommended that it only be for something special. He assured me it was, and the time was granted. On the weekend I found out that he was curling with Kevin Martin, and when he returned the following week, I asked him, ‘Why didn’t you tell me who you were?’ We had a little laugh about it, and things carried on,” said Gadbois.

Morris and Lawes attended the medal ceremony on February 14, and according to their “Team Canada Pyeongchang 2018 Blog: Kaitlyn Lawes and John Morris” on February 13 said, “It was wonderful to get out there on the ice and

hear the crowd cheering, and know there was so much support for us at home!”

Also stated on the blog, team members stayed involved in Pyeongchang by cheering for fellow Team Canada curlers.

According to Gadbois, both Morris and Ben Hebert (Men’s Curling Team Canada Lead) took fire training in Vermilion. He noted that an ‘A’ personality type is required for both fire training and Olympic training.

“These are the best of the best. It’s awesome, it’s the Olympics, we’re 4-0, and I’ve got a big smile on my face going into tomorrow,” said Hebert in his “Team Canada Pyeongchang 2018 Blog: Ben Hebert,” on February 16.

Valley Lodge Valentine’s Tea

Hundreds of residents and community members enjoyed a Valentine’s Day Tea hosted by the Vermilion Valley Lodge on February 14.

While visiting residents, guests savoured angel food cake with strawberries and whipped cream along with their tea. A raffle was held with donations made by residents and community members for several prizes, as well as a quilt and a grocery hamper.

On Saturday, January 13, 2018 Mrs. Arleigh Stone passed away in the Red Deer Regional Hospital at the age of 92 years. Arleigh is loved and remembered by her Daughter Lynda (Bernie) Olsen of Red Deer; Grandsons Derek (Cleanne) Olsen of Red Deer, Brett (Sharon) Olsen of Red Deer; Granddaughters Amber (Drew) Millen of Victoria, B.C., and Ashlee Reis of Comox B.C.; Great Grandchildren Emma Riley Olsen and Simon George Millen. She was predeceased by her husband, Kenneth Mayson Stone and her sons: Mayson Kenneth Stone and Roy Lee Stone.

A Memorial Service was held on Saturday January 20, 2018 in the Vermilion Elks Hall at 1:00 p.m.

The Vermilion Elementary School received recognition for being a Common Sense Digital Citizenship Certified School from Common Sense Education.

The non-profit organization’s mantra is ‘committed to creating a culture of digital learning and citizenship.’ By providing free, research-based classroom tools for teachers and schools, Common Sense Education helps students harness technology for learning and life, enabling them to make safe, smart, and ethical decisions in the digital world. Working to ensure all children have the opportunity to thrive in the 21st century, Common Sense Education is dedicated to helping families and educators thrive in a world of media and technology.

“Vermilion Elementary School deserves praise for giving its students the foundational skills they need to compete and succeed in the 21st-century workplace and participate ethically in society at large,” said a Common Sense Education representative.

It is said “Little Love requires little pain, but “Great Love” requires great pain. You may beginning a journey that is often frightening, painful and sometimes lonely, it is the Grief journey. No words written nor kind words said can take the pain away.

When someone you love dies, or a life loss occurs, the emotion of love necessitates that outwardly, you must embrace the pain. Grief cannot be denied, minimized or escaped.” You must feel it to heal it.

Grief is a process not an even and so

it will take time. Be patient and gently with yourself the pain will lessen in time.

Remember each person’s journey is uniquely theirs and will be felt and dealt with in their own unique way.

There are some social myths that well controlled people stay rational all the time and if you are doing well you are considered strong and under control. On the other hand if a person openly expressed their grief, they are thought to be immature, over emotional, or if intense, crazy.

The tears shed when someone loved died or any other life changing event occurs is the beginning of the healing process.

The outward expression of tears allows

your grief wound to start healing. Tears are alos the physical healer for what the person goes through in the trauma of loss.

While the pain you experience by the death of someone you have loved or the life loss that changes you forever but denying the pain will not make it go away.

Moving toward your pain and through your pain helps with the healing and reconciling of your grief.

Death may separate you but love will never go away. Memories live on.

At the Derwent FUNspiel, a good time was had by all! The two-day event started on February 2, at the arena and ended on February 3, with a nice roast beef supper.

A dozen teams were to participate, but one had to cancel because of road conditions. The 11 teams were from Derwent and the surrounding areas.

Guns And Severe Mental Illness

S eve n te e n people lost their lives last week at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida during the 18 th school shooting in the U.S. since the beginning of 2018.

It crushes my heart deeply and angers me beyond belief that there were so many signs missed that Cruz had the potential and ability to commit such a massacre. Let’s have a look back at just a few of the signs.

According to many news repor ts Nickolas Cruz was adopted by a loving family but suffered the loss of his father when he was young, the death of his mother only 3.5 months ago leaving himorphaned and that Cruz was

in a deep depression. Cruz has been described by his former classmates as a loner with a temper, gun fanatic and someone who they thought could commit such an act. So, my question is, if students thought that Nickolas Cruz could perpetrate such a horrendous deed why didn’t any of them speak of it before now? Or did they? And it was ignored by school professionals or counsellors?

Jim Gard, a math teacher of Cruz, was quoted as saying that “We were told last year that he wasn’t allowed on campus with a backpack on him.

There were problems with him last year threatening students, and I guess he was asked to leave campus.”

In the case of Nikolas Cruz, I think a lot of balls were dropped by an awful lot of people (the FBI especially), and seventeen innocent people lost their lives. Severe mental illness such as in this case and guns were a lethal combination.

Councillor Pulyk noted that a recent networking oppor tunity in Whistler, British Columbia, was one of the best events that he has attended.

“We were fortunate enough to meet and have key interactions with five developers and restaurant industr y people. They will be coming to Vermilion within the next month to have a look at our community, “said Pulyk.

Councillor Henderson noted that a WOW event is scheduled in Vermilion on April 25. This event will engage local businesses and is still looking for additional committee members.

After Councillor Thompson noted his enjoyment of the strategic planning Mayor, Caroline McAuley, followed up by saying, “We’ve set another ambitious course for Vermilion.”

This dip is quick a n d e a s y t o m a ke with everyday ingredients and a can of c r a b m e at . I t i s perfect for entertaining year round whether it’s a casual get together or something a little more elegant like a bridal shower, this dip fits the bill. I recommend using the zero fat sour cream or a 2% fat or less Greek yogurt. The low fat allows the delicate flavour of the crab to come through. I have made it both with the sour cream

and the Greek yogurt with good results.

This is a chilled dip that is lightly crab flavoured, with a refreshing taste from the red pepper and green onion. What I really love about this dip recipe is that it does not need heavy cream cheese yet it has a creamy, fresh and light taste. It is low in calories and high in nutrients, so feel free to indulge, guilt free. You can mix it up and ser ve it immediately or chill for a few hours in advance.

Crab is a good source of low fat protein, selenium, vitamin B12, niacin, vitamin B2, zinc, folate, iron and omega 3 fats. Crab is also high in phosphorus

and combined with the calcium from the sour cream, this dip can provide bone strengthening benefits. The high levels of phosphorus found in crab can aid the liver and kidneys in detoxification. The Omega 3 in crab meat is the long chain variety, which can help protect against heart disease. Crab is high in selenium, which is important as an antioxidant, for our immune system an d for the met ab olism of thyroi d hormones. Crab contains 12 times more selenium than beef. Crab is a sea food that is found all along our Canadian coastal waters. Using canned crab meat makes this dip a snap to make.

I’m not sure how much introspection into the nature of “ family” has taken place over the years during what has become our A l b e r t a n “ Fa m i l y Day weekend,” but I certainly hope it has, given how popular it has become across the board here. The ability to make that journey in to knowing about family is far more available to us than it has ever been given the access of the internet and sites like Ancestry.com, where you can so easily find access to a depth and detail of family history that were unheard of for most of us not that long ago. The holiday may have been somewhat controversial when it was first brought into being back in 1990, but I think we Albertans can be a little bit chuffed now that so many of our fellow Canadians have since followed along with our lead. The word ‘Family’ itself can be such a loaded word too…sort of like thinking about the word bread triggering thoughts of the warmth and aroma emanating from the opening door of an oven as Mom takes out a fresh batch of dinner rolls. Family has so many dif ferent meanings depending on the context it is used in and the funny thing is

that the majority (I hope, but there are always exceptions) could agree on the narrative behind them if you were talking about the phrases like, i.e. family life, family background, family name, family ties, family business, the ‘family car’, family room, a ‘ family man’, a family movie...and even the abovediscussed family tree.

I suppose in a way I was blessed and lucky, after all, to be brought up in an environment where the larger family that was my parent’s generation, with most of their siblings also having larger families, that each of my rather huge group of cousins childhoods was spent constantly around and with each other which, by today’s standards, would seem rather amazing. It didn’t seem to matter what the occasion was…whether it was a ball game, a visit to aunts or uncles on weekends or for some farm work, and even picnics in summer….there was always a built-in connected “crew,” always someone to play with or a relative watching out for you. And even since then I’ve come to look at my thoughts of the family tree, which still in my case the roots are rather long and deep in my hometown, to a web of interconnectedness that takes us not just to neighbors across the street but to little places across the world like Catawissa, Missouri, Plush in Dorset, England, and Varste in Nied-

Crab Dip 1 cup zero fat sour cream 1/4 cup mayonnaise 3 tablespoons finely chopped green onion 3 tablespoons finely chopped red pepper 1/2 teaspoon black pepper 1/2 teaspoon sea salt 1 can 170 grams of flaked crab meat well drained.

Drain the crab meat well, if there is too much liquid left, the dip will be runny. Combine all the ingredients and stir. Serve chilled with crackers, veggies or your favourite chips.

Vermilion Youth Attend VEX Robotics Provincial Championships

Two Vermilion teams will compete against the elite in Alberta during the VEX Robotics Provincial Championships in Edmonton on February 19.

Each team will be trying to qualify to attend the VEX Robotics World Championship in Louisville, Kentucky. There will be lots of excitement as the provincial competition is held at the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology.

For the past 11 years, VEX Robotics has encouraged students to challenge themselves in the fields of science, technology, robotics, engineering and math, through the fun of hands- on applied learning and critical thinking.

“Every year, we design a different engineering challenge that students play in the form of a game,” says Grant Cox, Global Competition Manager for VEX Robotics. “ The par ticipating student teams must design and program their own robots in hopes of

winning the challenge. Competitive robotics is a really exciting way for kids to learn how to collaborate and solve problems through designing and programming. VEX Robotics and VEX IQ students begin with a hobby and end up with critical learning skills that will benefit and shape their future education, teamwork skills and career paths.”

It is no secret that in the robotics community, Canada is known for producing world champions. The Innisfree-Minburn 4-H Beef Club held our monthly meeting in Minburn on February 7. Our Leader’s Tour was held on February 11. Everyone’s projects are looking good. On February 16 we had our public speaking competition at the Minburn Hall. There were some very interesting topics and everyone did very well. Thank you to all the judges who came to judge our speeches. In the Junior category Camille Kassian placed first, Bradley McLaughlin

placed second and Madeline Nott placed third. In the Intermediate category Tyson Rudolf placed first, Carson Kassian second and Alex Nott third. In the Senior category Megan Rudolf placed first, Morgan Nott placed second, Logan Nott placed third and Courtney Cannan placed fourth. Our first place speakers will be moving on to the District Communications Competition in Vegreville on February 24. District curling will be held in Innisfree at the curling rink on March 4. Our next meeting will be March 7 in Innisfree.

Bull Market Pasture Blends

Most forage seed companies offer a pasture blend. Some customize their blend to the customer’s situation, but others use a least-cost formulation to produce a more attractively priced blend.

Ideally, the blend should contain grasses and legumes that grow well together, are well-adapted to the environment and soil type they will be seeded in, will tolerate grazing, and produce good animal performance. Seed companies often don’t have all the information they need to formulate these ideal blends.

As one example, forage breeding plots are typically far too small to graze, so forage yield is evaluated using a plot harvester. This means that forage varieties are being selected for their ability to produce and recover from mechanical harvesting rather than grazing. Forage improvement programs that integrate the breeding, agronomics, and grazing management research programs to gather the data needed to develop effective pasture blends take a long time and are very costly.

To help address this issue, the Beef Science Cluster has been supporting research led by Dr. Yousef Papadopoulos at Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada’s Experimental Farm in Nappan, Nova Scotia. Par t of this research program is examining long-term trends

in forage yields, nutritional value, animal performance and species composition of complex grass-legume blends.

What they Did: Four different combinations of timothy, meadow fescue, reed canarygrass, Kentucky bluegrass, tall fescue, meadow brome, and orchardgrass were seeded with either birdsfoot trefoil or alfalfa in the spring of 2010.

The grass-legume paddocks were rotationally grazed from May through October starting in 2011 through 2016.

Grazing began when forage was at least 25cm high, and allowed to recover until it was 25cm tall again. Depending on rainfall and temperature, cattle were cycled through each paddock two to seven times per grazing season. Small sections were clipped before each grazing cycle began to estimate forage yield and quality (e.g. total digestible nutrients, fiber, crude protein, sugars). The proportion of grasses and legumes was also determined at least twice per grazing cycle.

What they Learned: Five full grazing seasons at Nappan have been completed. Generally speaking, the legume that was included in the blend had a much greater impact on forage yields, forage quality and animal performance than the specific grasses in the blend.

Average forage yields between 2011 and 2016 averaged 10 to 20% higher for the seed blends that included alfalfa as

the legume than for those that included birdsfoot trefoil. In terms of forage quality, crude protein averaged 18 to 25% higher and total digestible nutrients averaged 3 to 4% higher for the blends that contained alfalfa than for those that included birdsfoot trefoil. The ratio of sugars to crude protein averaged 50 to 78% higher for blends that contained birdsfoot trefoil than for those that contained alfalfa.

In contrast, average animal performance between 2011 and 2016 was better on the blends that contained birdsfoot trefoil than for those that contained alfalfa. Daily gains on the birdsfoot trefoil stands averaged 2 to 6% higher, adding up to 30 to 44% greater total animal gains per acre over the grazing season.

The researchers attributed this to the higher sugar:protein ratio on the birdsfoot trefoil blends, suspecting that rumen bacteria may digest and synthesize protein more efficiently when an readily digestible sugar is available. Birdsfoot trefoil also contains condensed tannins, which may reduce protein digestion in the rumen. Having that protein digested in the small intestine instead of by the rumen bacteria may contribute to more efficient animal growth.

Legume persistence: Initially, all of the forage stands contained 25 to 30% legume, but the alfalfa and birdsfoot trefoil had virtually disappeared from all of the stands by the fifth year of graz-

ing. Not surprisingly, forage yields fell by 20% to 30% as the legumes dwindled.

Because the legume component of the forage blends appeared to explain most of the differences in forage yield and animal performance outlined above, it’s not surprising that differences in forage yields and animal performance between the blends that contained alfalfa and birdsfoot trefoil were also much smaller by year five.

What it Means: If you’re in Nappan and want a seed blend for grazing, consider one that contains birdsfoot trefoil. If you’re growing hay to sell by the ton, a blend containing alfalfa may be a better choice. But some of the growing season length, soil pH, moisture, and temperature conditions that are common in Nappan don’t represent conditions elsewhere in Canada. In fact, this trial originally had additional AAFC sites in Kapuskasing ON and Brandon MB until those sites were shuttered in 2012 and 2013.

That’s unfortunate, because the legume and grass blends used in this study at Nappan would probably rank differently in other locations. That emphasizes the importance of having regionally appropriate research and extension activities throughout Canada to develop forage establishment, management, and grazing strategies that will optimize beef production per acre while finding ways to maintain or reestablish legumes in older mixed grass stands.

There were people in attendance from BC, AB, SK, MB, ON and the US. We had changed our Charity last year. We are now selling pictures for the Stollery in Edmonton and the Children’s Hospital in Calgary. We did well this year but need all to work at selling these pictures, rather than leaving it to the same members every year.

Another new and exciting project we as an association are going to have two $500. Scholarships a year.

“This winter’s presentations featured interesting topics on farm business management in the Alberta cow-calf business,” says Rick Dehod, farm financial specialist, Alberta Agriculture and Forestry (AF). The series brought a lot of information, ideas, and opportunities for producers to add to their management “tool kit” to help them make better choices based on better information.

Topics and presenters included: Cattle Market Situation and Outlook Ann Wasko, market analyst from Gateway Livestock, spoke about the cattle market situation and outlook, focusing on the conditions of November 2017. Ann included a forecast of what the market outlook could hold, moving forward.

The Use of Risk Management Tools in the Beef Industry - Brenda Hagen, project coordinator for the Western Livestock Price Insurance program, explained the use of risk management tools in the beef industry. She outlined the various tools available to protect your profit, and how different tools work in different market situations.

Business Structure for New Entrants Joel Bokenfohr, AF, presented material to benefit anyone who is entering the business. Joel reviewed what business structures could allow you to retain your profit, grow your business, and transition partners or family into your business.

Production and Enterprise Analysis - Herman Simons, AF, reminded the attendees that most farms have numerous enterprises, but sometime we do not realize which one is more profitable than another. Herman included how conducting an enterprise analysis will give you the information needed to increase the profitability of your entire farm while

using the same amount of resources.

A Farmer’s Guide to Agricultural Credit - Rick Dehod, AF, spoke about agricultural credit. Agriculture is a capital intensive business, and debt is a tool to enhance the opportunity for profit.

Like any tool, you need to understand its use and features to get full benefit for your farm. Rick included what you need to consider when taking on debt, and why its cost/interest rate is not the only factor to consider before you sign on the dotted line.

The Value of Having a Mentor Melissa Hermanson - a Canadian Cattlemen Young Leader participant, reflected on the value of having a mentor and her experiences that led her to become involved in the Canadian Cattlemen Young Leaders program. Mentorship is important to that program’s success.

Basis: An Important Part Of Marketing Your Cattle

Knowing how basis levels affect the part of a successful marketing approach livestock market analyst, Alberta Agriprice of your fed and feeder cattle is one for your cattle. Jason Wood, provincial culture and Forestry, explains the current factors affecting cash-to-cash basis levels, current Alberta basis levels, and what you need to know moving forward.

Due to strong packer demand for cattle in Western Canada, Alberta cash prices for slaughter steers have lately been higher than the Nebraska cash price.

“Our beef cow herd number have been flat compared to the expansion of the US beef cow herd, “says Wood. “This has been a big driver to keep more cattle here and driver of strong basis levels.”

“Current slaughter steer cash-to-cash basis levels are at some of the strongest levels in 25 years,” explains Wood. “For the week ending February 2, 2018, the Alberta/Nebraska slaughter steer cashto-cash basis was very strong at 8.65 over. By comparison, the cash-to-cash basis for slaughter steers was 1.71 over for the same week in 2017 and the 5-year average is 10.21 under.”

Basis levels fluctuate over time as prices react to changing market conditions. For example, slaughter steer cashto-cash basis levels typically strengthen in late spring/early summer and weaken in the fall. Meanwhile, feeder steer basis levels typically weaken in late winter and then start to strengthen in late summer to early fall.

“Keeping an eye on basis levels are one important part of your marketing plan,” adds Wood.

St. Jerome’s welcomed Pure Witness Ministries on Monday, February 12, to facilitate two half day retreats, grade 6 to 8 in the morning and grade 9 to 11 in the afternoon. This seven member team of Youth leaders, ages 18 to 22, enthused our students from the moment the retreat began until the very end. Through music, games, skits and inspirational talks our students’ hearts were revived throughout the day. The story of Ian McCormack reinforced the message that only true happiness and joy can be found through a relationship with Jesus, the one who gives our lives meaning and purpose.

This semester’s hot lunch chef will be Grade 12 student, Parker Carlson. He’s no newbie to the position as he prepared daily meals last year as well. Parker will ensure that students and staff are able to

buy a fresh-prepared meal from the cafeteria; upcoming menu items include salads, stir-fry, barbecue beef sandwiches, sloppy joes, and more.

In Mrs. Zelenka’s Grade 11 and 12 Multimedia class, students conducted an social experiment via Facebook to find out the speed and effects of information transmission online. Within 1 day of posting a photo, just under 30,000 people were reached and 600 comments, and 2200 reactions were observed!

Celebrating Ash Wednesday with our parish community is always a meaningful moment. Celebrating the beginning of Lent with receiving ashes on our foreheads helps us to prepare our hearts and minds for forty days of reflection, turning from our sins, and drawing closer to Christ. Father Roger reminded us how the Israelites spent

40 years in the desert and how Jesus spent 40 days in the wilderness drawing closer to God, as we should do during this season of Lent.

Wow! What beautiful students we have at St. Jerome’s especially when they all dress up in their Sunday best for Formal Day. Elementary students enjoyed celebrating Valentine’s Day on Wednesday, February 14, sharing treats, passing out Valentine Cards, and playing a variety of fun games in their classrooms. The Middle Level students shared snacks together before enjoying a Valentine Dance in the gym.

The High School students participated in “Find Your Match” competition throughout the day. Congratulations to the winners, Daegan Kissinger and Sophie Whelan, Kadyn Bardoel and Angelica Bosgra, and Austin Starko and Joshua Bogoya.

The class is already preparing for the carnival and are looking for prizes for the Jr. and Sr. Hoop-la and Fish Pond. If you have any clean, gently used toys, stuffies, puzzles, jewellery, etc. please drop them off at the school office or contact the school.

In the ski hill on February 14, despite Mother Foods she will be introducing them to Nature’s attempt to change our plans! Blue the basics food groups, and kitchen skies were on the menu! Thanks to our bus and cooking safety, as well as preparing drivers for getting everyone to and from simple foods. Her message is “Be kind to others, we only have one world, share it.” All of the VES entries are displayed on the VIBE bulletin board for the month. On February 28, wear pink and choose kindness.

The first round of art club is underway, and the second round will be starting soon. Mrs. Doherty and Mrs. Tomkins are working with the amazing artists that have come out to explore new techniques. One of the techniques explores the concept of fluid paint-

ing. This is a non-representational (abstract) art technique that has the students pouring paint on a canvas and watching the magic happen. The second technique is using ink to create a beautiful tile. These inks are a little unpredictable, but the students are embracing their creative and imaginative par ts of their brain to create masterpieces. The third creative technique that they are exploring is digital art. Students are using a google app called Sumopaint to create art on the computer. Some are choosing more abstract pieces to create and others are choosing to create more concrete pictures. They are having a blast being creative together. Come check out the art show in the library after the second round of art club is finished.

Basketball Club is up and running once again this year. Thir t y-seven students are enjoying learning basketball skills and playing half-court games.

They’ve been learning how to dribble with their heads up, how to shoot properly, and the important role that passing and playing as a team has in the game of basketball. The group of students this year is very positive, respectful, and enthusiastic. Mr. Beecroft is extremely happy to have Mrs. Seymour help out this year, as she brings a lot of knowledge and skill with her to each practice.

The club will close out the season in early March with some games against the staff.

tans with a carbon tax would buy us so-called “social license” for pipelines.

This new news on TransMountain shows yet again how that strategy is in tatters.

Why is this important to me? First, I’m an Albertan and want to see our province once again be the envy, not only of this nation, but of the world. As the United Conservative Critic for Property and Surface Rights, oil is Albertans property and doggone it, I’m going to fight for it.

I’m curious to see what moves the NDP will make on behalf of TransMountain in the coming weeks, but it’s clear to me that the carbon tax ‘social license’ scheme gets a failing grade with Albertans.

Conservatives React To Liberal Government’s Environmental And Regulatory Changes

Submitted Ottawa, ON – February 8, 2018, Conservative Shadow Minister for the Environment and Climate Change, the Hon. Ed Fast and Shannon Stubbs, Conservative Shadow Minister for Natural Resources, responded to the release of the Liberals’ proposed Impact Assessment Act and the Canadian Energy Regulator Act. “Since the Liberals were elected in 2015, major capital investments in Canada’s resource sector have significantly declined due to regulatory uncertainty,” said MP Fast. “Now the Liberals are proposing the creation of new regulatory burdens, which when combined with a federal carbon tax, will impede Canada’s global competitiveness without enhancing environmental protection.

Instead of ‘no surprises and no drama’, what Canadians are actually getting is no development.

Mr. Fast explained that existing legislation provides a science-based approach that ensures both environmental protection and economic growth. The Liberal government’s proposed changes will impose new hurdles to growth and reduce transparency while doing little to actually improve environmental protections.

“The world benefits when Canadian resources are competitive because of our world-leading environmental regulations and social responsibility,” said MP Stubbs.

“The Trudeau Liberals need to start championing Canada’s natural resource indus-

tries instead of putting road blocks in their way.”

In 2016, Canada’s natural resources sector accounted for 16 per cent of Canada’s economic activity and 38 per cent of its non-residential capital investment.

However, regulatory uncertainty and red tape have resulted in Canadian energy investment declining more in the past two years than in any other two year period in the last 70 years. Canadian businesses are also facing major competitiveness challenges, as the United States moves forward with its plan to reduce regulation, lower taxes, and invest in coal and natural gas fired electricity to reduce energy costs.

“The Liberals must ensure that energy investors and proponents have confidence that their job creating projects will be able to proceed in a timely manner and that projects won’t be delayed indefinitely by legal and bureaucratic roadblocks,” continued MP Stubbs. “The Trudeau Liberals must champion Canadian energy projects and provide regulatory certainty, predictability, and clarity to ensure the viability of major projects.”

The Bill tabled today provides no assurances that future projects of national and local significance will proceed. Instead, it builds on the Liberal record of increasing red tape and over-regulation. The proposed Impact Assessment Act adds a new planning phase that extends consultations and provides the Minister with the

to see how this legislation will speed up the approval process or provide investors with enhanced certainty and confidence.

“Canada’s Conservatives will continue to stand against onerous regulations that destroy jobs, economic growth and global competitiveness,” said MP Fast. “We will continue to review this lengthy bill to determine what other negative effects our resource sector could experience from its proposed changes.”

Vermilion Rock Wins B Consolation Playoffs

During their final game of the year, the Vermilion Rock won 9 – 2 against the Neilburg Monarchs, making them the B Consolation Playoff Champions.

Vermilion had faced Kitscoty in the semi-finals and Neilburg in the finals, winning 3 - 0 in the semi-finals and 4 0 in the finals.

During their final game on February 17, two goals each were scored by Eric Fadden and Scott Roland; and one goal each were scored by Kyler Anderson, Stephen Simmons, Dallon Byrt, Trent Dutchak, and Reid Roland.

Prior to the game, Rod Boutin, President of the SaskAlta Hockey League,

presented two awards. Each team had nominated members of their own team for various awards and other teams voted.

Eric has been on the team seven years, and it was his fourth time winning this award. Darcy has been coaching for six years and it was his second time receiving this award.

How much physical activity do you need for health-related fitness?

Experts say your goal should be at least 2.5 hours of moderate to vigorous activity
