The Vermilion Chamber of Commerce hosted their 3rd Annual Small Business Awards Gala on October 18, at the Pomeroy Inn & Suites.

“We had a lot more nominations this year which was great to see. We would like to thank the business community for their participation within the chamber and in the community throughout the year,” said Brett Flanders, Chamber of Commerce President.

N e w C a p R a d i o ’s Ky l e P h i l l i p s emceed the event, Red Feather Ridge catered the meal, the Vermilion Rotary Club provided bartending, and floral arrangements were provided by Fantasy Flowers and Lakeland Country Florists.

“I’m impressed with the resilience of the small business community. You’ve soldiered through tough times, and in terms of giving back, your employ-

ees have gone on to volunteer in the community. You are all winners for contributing to your community, and you not only provide employment, but are prepared to take risks, and provide services with passion,” said MLA Dr. Richard Starke.

County of Vermilion River Reeve, Lonnie Wolgien said, “Congratulations to the nominees and small business community on becoming innovative entrepreneurs and community leaders, and for thinking outside the box. We are looking forward to our continued partnership with the Town of Vermilion.”

“I am honoured to recognize the value that you provide to our community. There are people here who champion Vermilion when in other communities, as well as for making Vermilion a great place to work and live,” said Caroline McAuley, Mayor of Vermilion.

An update was given from Lakeland College’s Mike Christie who thanked the business community for their support of students at Lakeland College, as were updates from Community Future’s Phyllis M ak i, and the Cham ber of Commerce Group Insurance Plan’s Tim Dyck.

“This is an amazing community; you should be proud,” said Dyck.

Lakeland College Open House

Vermilion’s Lakeland College held an Open House on October 20-21, hosting prospective students and their families to tour the grounds and find out more about their courses of interest.

First-year EST students, Brianna McMaster and Jesse Plamondon, led a tour of the Fire Training Centre on October 21. Prospective students were shown stations where they would learn how to be safe with chemicals, practice on a smoke tower or pumping skills, as well as a vehicle extrication. According to McMaster, an advantage of the Lakeland College Fire Training Centre is that they use a variety of training co-ops from industrial to commercial, as well as a lot of hands-on training and book learning.

Tours were provided for agricultural classes and some hands-on demonstrations were given for different programs in the trades.

“It is neat to see everyone’s different

talents and ideas come out when working with different students,” said CST Instructor, Don Speck, who assisted prospective students in building and finishing coat racks in the carpentry department on October 20.

“It has been so easy getting information that I was looking for. Seeing things first hand is a bonus instead of online,” said prospective student, Kamryn Dobson.

In the hopes of having current students, Lakeland College in Vermilion also hosted their 14th Annual Career Fair on October 20.

“We would like to thank participating companies for their ongoing support of Lakeland College,” said Student Employment Advisor, Leanne Griffiths who noted that many of the companies currently have Lakeland Alumni as staff.

Jovial Night At Folk Club With Steve Poltz

The crowd was dazzled as the Vermilion Folk Club welcomed singer-songwriter, Steve Poltz, at the Vermilion Legion on October 21.

As he opened the show, Poltz noted that the cold weather in Alberta had strained his Taylor guitar that had been given to him by Bob Taylor, owner of Taylor Guitars. Sixteen years ago, Poltz

had been given the opportunity to play at the National Association of Music Merchants. There, Taylor had suggested that Poltz pick one to play from his selection, and Poltz had chosen one not meant for advertisement, but he insisted.

With him ever since-cracks and all, Poltz said, “It gets treated so mean and has never let me down.”

A mix of emotions rang through his lyrics as some songs were comical, and

some heavier with a hopeful message.

Topics varied from baseball, to animals, and himself; all full of experience.

Poltz has been playing music since he was six years old, and his craft is genuine.

“I love performing because it is always new; it is fun,” said Poltz.

“It was a magical show; quite a joy to watch,” said audience member, Dean Barr.

Bruce MacDuff Says Goodbye To Town Council

After four years as Mayor of Vermilion, Bruce MacDuff says goodbye to Town Council after the municipal election on October 16.

“I fought a good battle, played by the rules, and lost. I’m a little disappointed,

but the voters have made their choice.

I’d like to congratulate all of the people elected,” said MacDuff.

MacDuff noted that highlights of his term included working with the council and administrative team, working towards the rebuild of the Vermilion Valley Lodge currently underway, and working to get

financing for the sewer treatment plant scheduled in 2018.

“I’m going to miss being involved in council. I’d like to thank my wife Marilyn, and all of my supporters. Thank you to all of those who came out to vote.

MacDuff plans to spend more time visiting family including his grandchildren,

and is eager to be able to go away a little more often.

Unable to continue his work on any of the municipal boards MacDuff said, “I’ll miss working with the citizens of Vermilion. It is a great town noted mostly for its volunteerism and its people who are warm and friendly.”

Elk Point RCMP Investigate Attempted Car Jacking And Break And Enter 3” wide version

On October 16, at approximately 7 a.m., Elk Point RCMP responded to a report of an attempted car jacking near the community hall in Frog Lake.

A black truck tried to force another vehicle off the road. One of the occupants of the truck brandished what was believed to be a firearm at the victim. The truck with several occupant’s then sped away.

Prior to the attempted car jacking, a

truck matching the same description was involved in a break and enter in Laurier Lake.

How would you define the word “Teamwork?” Most people if asked would describe it as c o o p er at i o n between those working on a task. While this is a true definition, you have to look at teamwork as a much broader definition.

I once attended a seminar on teamwork and the way it was explained to me was by breaking the word “Team” down to each letter and giving it meaning, and it went like this. “T” is for “together,” “E” was for “everyone,” “A” meant “achieves” and lastly “M” meant “more,” so, in the end, we had a sentence which stated, “together everyone achieves more.” It is a statement which has stuck with me throughout my working life, and I truly believe it has to be incorporated into a teamwork environment.

ability to get along with your co-workers or teammates it has to be the willingness and eagerness to help, support, and work together to succeed in the goals your team has set forth.

Each individual in a team or working in a team environment brings forth their own set of skills and by combining these skills and working together is what makes a “team” work. Without the support of your team members, without the cooperation of your team members, without the members of your team caring about the common good of your team and the goals you have set, your team and your teamwork are already on a path to disaster.

During the Candidate Forum I heard the question asked “What does leadership mean to you?” and as I listened to each answer presented I thought to myself can the term Leadership be broken down the same way I heard the word team? So, of course, me being me I had to go and look it up, and sure enough, it can be, and it goes like this. “L” is for ‘lead” anyone

can be named a leader, but you have to lead to succeed. “E” is for ‘encourage’ encouraging people around you is one of the most important things within leadership. “A” is for ‘act’ as a leader; you should act when that’s needed. You can’t just share your vision on things without acting on it. “D” is for ‘dream’ dreaming about the future is essential for leaders.

To be a good leader, you have to dream a lot about how things could be and should be. The next “E” is for ‘expect,’ when you take the lead, you have to expect things from yourself and the people around you.

“R” is for ‘respect,” respect is everything.

As a leader, you should respect yourself, the people around you and their opinions. Without respect, you can’t be a good leader for people you lead. “S” is for ‘share,’ great leaders share a lot. Share your vision, passion, and knowledge. “H” is for ‘honour,’ honor people when they are doing well. People love it and need it. It will inspire them to get the most out of everything. “I” is for ‘inspire,’ the greatest leaders in the world are always

leaders who can inspire other people.

“P” is for ‘protect,’ a great leader always protects the ones he/she leads, without their leader a group can be venerable, a leader protects the people who are helping develop their visions and goals.

I have worked in a few dif ferent careers; ranging from owning/operating a hair salon, to working in the medical field where leadership and teamwork is an absolute must, to now working in an extremely busy newspaper business where I can tell you if each member in leadership roles and team roles didn’t understand how they both work the consequences can be disastrous.

The team in which I have worked with over the past four years (even though the members have changed) have all brought strengths with them, and we all learn new things from each other on a daily basis. Our team may not always work like a well-oiled machine, but we understand the meaning of “Team” work, and we know “together everyone achieves more.”

Wainwright RCMP Seek Assistance In Identifying Suspects

Wainwright RCMP Submitted

Wainwright, AB - On October 12, 2017, the Wainwright RCMP were notified of damage to the front door of the Irma Convenience Store. Once on scene, it was determined a pickup truck was used to smash through the front doors. Access was gained to the business by two suspects who proceeded to steal a large quantity of cigarettes and other goods including hats, sunglasses

and lighters.

One suspect was observed on video surveillance wearing a distinctive motocross helmet with a cow skull on the top/ front and cross revolver pistols on the back (a Fox logo is also noted below the pistols).

The second suspect was wearing a Black Label Society sweater.

Based on evidence located on scene, the vehicle used is believed to be a 20132018 Dodge RAM ¾ Tonne pickup, red in colour. The vehicle will now have exten-

sive rear end damage, and be missing a mudflap and driver’s side tail light cover.

The same two suspects were subsequently involved in a Break and Enter at Flag City Foods in Hardisty, AB. Video evidence from the break in showed the same Dodge truck backing up into the front door, smashing down the door frame. The suspects then proceeded to enter the business and steal consumable goods. Both suspects wore the same disguises in both incidents.

I am invited to a house concert in which a local recording artist is hosting Jacob Moon. Jacob Moon is a talented Canadian song writer and recording artist. I am asked to bring an hors d’oeuvre . I decided on a cheese ball with crackers.

I have never been to a house concert before, but let me tell you it is an entirely elegant way to entertain. The room is dimed with the exception of a spot light on the performers. The host is a remarkable good at opening remarks and introductions. The hostess, singer Elnora Pittman opens the show singing three songs, one of which she had personally written and recorded. That is followed by Jacob Moon

You could count the number of times I’ve actually been on the saddle of a horse to about the same amount of fingers as the ‘V for Victory’ sign outstretched on one hand. Figuratively being in the saddle meant being in charge of where you were going and the freedom of choices to do it, but all the horror stories Dad had about riding horses cured me of acting on the reins of that idea. Horses were a love-hate relationship he seemed to have that was always enigmatic to me considering he always identified with and was a cowboy. So I guess it is that personal DNA from growing up on a ranch that this particular expression it is embed-

with a set of about five songs, an intermission and an additional seven songs. Their kitchen island is covered with an amazing selection of party foods, in which guests are invited to enjoy prior to the show and during intermission. Jacob even adds a homemade apple pie to the mix that was given to him from his last performance.

The concert is amazing, as Jacob is basically a one man band, playing guitar prelude after prelude that will be looped back into his song, and layered with more of his own guitar and vocals. Finely chop the pineapple, if you are using fresh, or you can use canned crushed pineapple. Whichever type of pineapple you choose be sure to squeeze most of the juice out. This can be wrapped in plastic wrap and stored in the refrigerator. It is best stored for several hours for the flavors to blend and the ball form to stiffen. It can be used right away or even popped into the oven, in an oven safe dish, to serve warm and soft.

Mental Health And PTSD

Vermilion Citizens on Patrol hosted a Mental Health and PTSD Presentation at the School of Hope on October 18.

Speaker, Bernie VanTighem shared life experiences of his past trauma, the stigma around mental health, and his ongoing recovery and living with PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder).

According to VanTighem, his journey began 30 years ago when he was called to a severely disturbing truck and train accident. At the time, the accident had not fazed him, but ten years later he was diagnosed with depression and anxiety.

Another eight years had passed before a couple of fellow firefighters had died by suicide, and VanTighem sought appropriate treatment for the PTSD that he had been suffering all along.

According to VanTighem, researchers estimate that as many as 45 per cent of Canadians will experience a mental illness at some point in their life. He also noted that the stigma associated with mental health concerns often cause people not to report them, not seek help, not get better, and sometimes even lead to suicide.

“The stigma is towards all mental health issues, but the reality is that trauma can affect everyone. I believe that programs which address resilience and normalizing physiological reactions will do more for people than any training I have taken in my 30 years in Fire, Ambulance and Search and Rescue. We need to accept normal responses to abnormal events and let people feel,” said VanTighem.

VanTighem went on to explain mental illness affects us all and that if practicing

the appropriate treatment, people can grow from trauma. He suggested that people acknowledge illnesses and offer to listen to their peers, keeping in mind that it is okay for everyone to react differently. He also suggested that people seek positive coping methods, and if necessary, follow up with professional help.

“Do not isolate people. No one should walk alone,” said VanTieghem.

He also noted that mental illness is not a weakness, and referenced a popular sport psychology phrase, “The difference between good athletes and great athletes is the Psychologist in the dressing room.” “ This makes mental health cool again,” said VanTighem who noted that support of your peers does not need to be complicated and it is not therapy, and Bernie VanTighem delivered a presentation that sometimes the simplest actions are on PTSD at the School of Hope on October 18. Teal Pumpkins For Halloween

On October 17, the Interact Club of Vermilion met to discuss the Teal Pumpkin Project.

T h e Te a l P u m p k i n Pr o j e c t i s a Halloween program that offers alternatives for children with food allergies, as well as for children where candy is not an option while keeping Halloween a fun experience for all trick-or-treaters. People in the community place their teal pumpkin on their doorstep on Halloween to indicate that they have none food treats.

The Interact club will be painting and selling Teal Pumpkin along with a sample give away bag. The clubs goal is to sell at least 30 pumpkins to

help give as many children as possible a fun and safe Halloween. Pumpkins can be ordered from Kirby at Christina’s Home Furnishings up to October 27 for pick up on Oct 30.

The Interact club is an International Rotar y ser vice club for ages 12 to 18 and is sponsored by local Rotary clubs who provide support and guidance. Each year, the Interact club must complete at least two community service projects, one local project and one international. Both projects are to help learn the impor tance of leadership skills and personal integrity, demonstrating helpfulness and respect for others as well as learning to understand the value of individual responsibility and hard work.

County Wetland Restoration And Upcoming Beaver Workshop

Submitted The County of Vermilion River is one of two Wetland Restoration Agencies in Alberta. Ducks Unlimited restores wetlands over much of the province, and the County of Vermilion River restores wetlands within the County. As a Wetland Restoration Agency, we restore or create wetland habitat to replace the habitat that was lost to development.

Alberta’s Wetland Policy requires anyone who drains or fills a wetland to replace the wetland habitat that is lost. While most wetland losses currently result from industry or development, most potential wetland restoration sites are on private land. The Wetlands Restoration Agency wants to work with landowners to replace lost wetlands. The County of Vermilion River Wetlands Restoration Agency uses provincial Wetland Restoration Fund money to restore wetlands. The Wetland Restoration Fund collects monies from those who drain or fill wetlands and need to compensate for removing wetland habitat. For more

Wetlands are a significant feature in Alberta’s landscape, and particularly in northeastern Alberta. A wetland is any low-lying area of land that holds water long enough to support aquatic plants and wildlife for at least part of their life cycle. Wetlands are highly diverse, productive ecosystems and include bogs, fens, swamps, marshes, potholes and ponds. Wetlands are valuable to society – they sustain healthy watersheds by protecting water quality, providing water storage and infiltration, reducing flooding, and providing habitat for wildlife, fish and plants.

In northeastern Alberta, many wetlands are either created or modified by beavers.

Beavers have been building and modifying wetlands in this area for thousands of years.

building wetlands. Unfortunately they don’t always build them in the right place for their human neighbors, or they damage desirable trees to construct their dams. Where beavers create ponds and slow water flow in the right place they are very desirable.

Where they flood roads, homes or fields, or cut down shelterbelt trees they are a concern.

The second workshop in the County of Vermilion River Wetland Series is “Beavers in our Landscape” at Red Feather Ridge on November 8, at 9 a.m. This workshop will cover both benefits and concerns with beavers and their projects. The goal is to find a compromise between the benefits and problems so we can share our landscape with these natural wetland engi-

‘Total Solar Eclipse, A Chronicle’

A s tr o p h oto g r a p h er, R o b B ar o n, shared a recent collection including the 2017 total solar eclipse at the Vermilion Public Library on October 17.

Baron shared a video and g ave demonstrations with a telescope to community members wanting to learn more about the galactic display. He acquired the interest as a child when he received a telescope for Christmas and had always been interested in photography.

“In 2003 I began using larger telescopes to prove to myself that the things seen in magazines do exist,” said Baron.

He described astrophotography as being a challenging form of photography with hours of exposures and image processing. His master’s degree in

image processing for remote sensing in agriculture comes in useful, and he continues to challenge himself to get photos that are technically correct and to create images that are visually pleasing.

Baron and his wife, Sandra Sturton, travelled to Alliance, Nebraska to be able to capture the 2017 total solar eclipse on August 21.

“There hasn’t been a total eclipse in North America since 1979, so 2017 was quite an opportunity for people. The next expected one will be visible from the eastern United States in 2024, and in 2044 one is expected in Lethbridge, Alberta,” said Baron who noted that Vermilion would not see one for more than 200 years.

After travelling over 1,500 km, the couple noticed airplanes landing every

90 seconds at an airport that doesn’t usually see two planes in one day, given that the size is similar to Vermilion.

According to the couple, a farmer had opened his field to approximately 700 guests, where they were able to camp and take in the two and a half minute eclipse.

“Everyone gasped and cheered as the sun reached the diamond ring phase and was just about to be revealed. If I was ever to do it again, I might spend more time enjoying it and less time taking pictures,” said Baron.

was able to watch the eclipse was the pink sparkly edge that appeared just before the sun moved from behind the shadow of the moon.

According to Baron, the hobby is quiet and solitary but provides him a lot of fun.

“It’s a pretty cool universe. You never run out of things to take pictures of because the universe is ever expanding,” said Baron.

AHS Influenza Immunization Program Has Started

Starting today, Monday (Oct. 23), Alber tans have the oppor tunit y to protect themselves and others against influenza through Alber ta’s annual influenza immunization program.

Offering influenza immunization, free of charge, to all Alber tans six months of age and older, the vaccine will be available at hundreds of Alberta Health Ser vices (AHS) public influenza immunization clinics, as well as at many pharmacists and physician offices around the province.

“We have seen cases and outbreaks

of influenza already,” says Dr. Digby H o r n e, M e d i c a l O f f i c e r o f H e a l t h Central Zone.“You may be healthy now but, without immunization, everyone is at risk. Prevention is your only protection.”

Immunization is the most effective means of protecting against the strains of influenza virus circulating each season. Because those strains change from season to season, Albertans are reminded they cannot rely on having been immunized in years past.

“Last season, influenza immunization cut Albertans’ risk for influenza by just more than 40 per cent. That’s

great, but last year’s immunization won’t protect you this season. You need this season’s immunization to be protected this season.”

Over a six-month period last season, more than 1,600 Albertans were hospitalized and 64 Albertans died with influenza. Influenza causes more emergency depar tment visits than hear t attacks and strokes, not to mention significant downtime from work and leisure activities.

“Influenza does not discriminate,” says Dr. Horne. “Though some Albertans are at greater risk of severe complications, no one is naturally immune to

influenza. Please don’t take the risk.

Influenza can be one less thing we battle this winter. For yourself, and your loved ones, get immunized.”

National Amaryllis Campaign

A table of vibrant Orange Sovereign Amaryllis bulbs welcomed patrons to the Vermilion Farmer’s Market on October 18, as part of the National Amaryllis Campaign for Huntington’s disease awareness.

Huntington’s disease is a fatal, hereditary brain disorder that causes progressively devastating effects to one’s mind and body. The Huntington Society of Canada (HSC) mentions that patients with the disease suffer symptoms similar to those of

Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis simultaneously.

Vermilion’s Lil Wilson has volunteered for the fundraiser for nearly 40 years.

Approximately 20 children registered for the Stay Safe course in Vermilion held by the The Western Institute of Emergency Education on October 20. The course offered children valuable knowledge and skills for when they are at home or out in the community. Children aged 9 – 13 received basic first aid training and practiced a variety of situations and procedures including how to use an EpiPen, bandages, asthma inhalers, and how to perform CPR or the Heimlich maneuver. “Many hands made light work,” says Fall Supper spearhead Mrs. Hart even though she spent weeks ahead of time planning the major fundraising event, from equipment, food​​ordering, food prep, proper sanitation, crew stations, and more.

The event, manned by a huge volunteer group of students, parents, and staff, ran like an annual event of almost 30 years and fed mouth-watering meals to approximately 650 people. Many thanks go to

The AGM for School Council was well attended and there was babysitting available for children to play in the gym while the meeting was happening. The annual election of officers took place with Kathy Crowe continuing on as chair, Sabrena Clark accepting the position of co-chair, Danielle Eriksen remaining as secretary, and Darcie Maier becoming treasurer. A huge thank you to all the parents who filled those roles. Jim King and Bruce Marriott are our school board trustees. Jim King shared information from the board and Mrs. Webb shared school items and talked about how all students in Grades 1-6 participate in a makerspace class each week. She then gave parents the opportunity to take part in a makerspace challenge, which gave them a better understanding of the course as well as bringing about a few laughs.

In sports news, two weekends ago Bray Crow (Grade 10), Sydney Crow (Grade 11), and Samuel Ree (Grade 10) qualified to compete at the Provincial level in Edmonton’s Rundle Park. They competed with other cross-country runners last weekend.​ ​(Next year our school will be hosting Provincial Cross-Country Champion-

ships!)​​The 6-man football team recently played against Cape Breton and last weekend played at Edmonton’s Millwoods Christian Academy.

Proceeds of this fundraiser go directly towards obtaining new books for our Library Learning Commons. You will find hundreds of quality books with a wide assortment for all reading levels. Our Roots of Empathy program is in full swing. The Grade 2 students are having a wonderful time watching their babies grow. They are thrilled each time

they witness their baby reach a new milestone and are always excited to celebrate each one with mom and baby. While they are witnessing the growth and development of their baby they are learning about emotional literacy, baby development, different temperament traits, the mother/ child bond, and so many other valuable lessons. This “emotional literacy” taught in the program lays the foundation for more safe and caring classrooms, where children are the changers. They are better able to understand their own feelings as well as the feelings of others (empathy), and are therefore less likely to physically, psychologically, or emotionally hurt each other. Roots of Empathy focuses on raising levels of empathy, resulting in more respectful and caring relationships and reduced levels of aggression. We are so fortunate and thankful to be able to offer this program at VES. The babies are truly the teachers in the classroom. We thank Baby Hendrix and her parents Sean and

Shannon for visiting 2A, and Baby Blakely with her parents Jeremy and Erica for visiting 2B. Without these tiny teachers we could not have Roots of Empathy in our school. Financial support thank you goes to the Town of Vermilion FCSS and County of Vermilion River FCSS. VES will be celebrating Halloween on October 31. Parents are welcome to join us for our costume parade. Students will be in costumes from 12:30 to 1:55 in the gym. After recess, students will participate in individual class activities. Please remember that costumes cannot include weapons and dangerous accessories.

As par t of the high school physical education program, students are expected to be introduced to alternate environments and activities outside of the school gymnasium. Our PE 10, 20, 30 students will be heading to the Vermilion Aquatic Centre on October 31 to complete their boat construction and racing then to scuba dive plus will head to Lloydminster Explosion Gymnastics on November 1.

Our team of healthy, active leaders, Ashlyn Hinton, Elise Demas, Roisin Dalton, Terri Ladouceur and Hailey Pidruchney, took advantage of the HASS Conference by brainstorming ways to make our school even better! Our HASS crew spent the day collaborating with other schools across East Central region and started on an action plan

Life is all about s m a l l s t e p s . We made baby steps before we could walk and we learned to walk before we could run. Steps are an integral part to evolving and lead to achievements.

As Stephen Guise said, “Every great accomplishment rests on the foundation of what came before it; when you trace it back, you’ll see one small step that started it all.” Many small steps taken led to the remarkable per formances of several Dewberry sports teams over the last few weeks.

To quote Lorii Myers,“True sportsmanship is excellence in motion! ” The Junior Girls’ volleyball team were a motion to behold; they excelled, in more ways than one in the Innisfree tournament. Not only did they take away the gold but they received the team sportsmanship award. What an amazing quality to be recognized for.

They made Dewberry School proud!!

Senior High Girls’ know what it takes for accomplishments to become a reality…it requires teamwork. The team definitely exhibited a harmonious effort in the Lloydminster Composite High tournament and brought home a silver medal. Wonderful job, working together

Our grade nine students will be participating in the Take Our Kids To Work program where they have a chance to go to work with parents or other community members for the day as part of a different learning opportunity In conjunction with Bus Safety Week, Cindy House will be presenting her Safely on Board program to our elementary students.

Secondary report cards will be going out on November 8 and Elementary report cards go out on December 8. Parent Teacher Interviews for both elementary and secondary will be on November 15 and 16 from 4:30 p. to 7:30 p.m.

The Senior Boys Volleyball team played at Paradise Valley, and will have two more tournaments and then will be off to Zones.

Although the Junior/Senior Cross Country Team only consisted of two members, they still showed lots of integrity. Brenton Romanchuk participated in the Junior High BTPS Cross Countr y Finals, tackling 3 km trail with a challenging and very long hill to take ninth place in the Under 14 category with a time of 19:16:00. Fabulous work, Brenton! Savana Deibert competed in the junior girl’s division at Zones through the trails of Muriel Lake Provincial Park. She ran 3 km in 21:47:87, taking 22nd place! Fantastic results for your first Zones competition, Savana! These two have shown perseverance and dedication over the years, and Dewberr y School applauds the ever-growing achievements you both continue to demonstrate!

Some small steps begin with a full belly. Dewberr y School recognizes that not every child comes to school nutritionally prepared to learn, so they provide breakfast to any student that requires a nutritional start to their day.

The breakfast program depends on and is grateful for donations to keep it readily available to all students. This last week, CPCA wagon driver BJ Carey, made a $200 donation to our break-

fast program! Thank you for thinking of us -- this should cover a few weeks of breakfast!

On October 12, Dewberry School was honored to take part in Fire Prevention Week. Our local heroes of the Dewberry Fire & Rescue Squad gave the students demonstrations and a tour of the fire station after providing a hot dog lunch. Thank you for an awesome

afternoon and being an integral part of keeping our community safe.

High School and Jr. High students are encouraged to dress up for the full day.

There will be costume contests and a variety of activities planned for the students. Students from kindergarten to Grade 5 wait until after lunch to dressup. There will be a Costume Parade in the gym at 1:00 pm for the elementary students and classroom parties to follow.

Elementary Happigrams will take place in the morning.

On October 4, ten students from St. Jerome’s Catholic School and J.R. Robson School travelled to Edmonton to take part in the Ford Driving Skills for Life (DSFL) Program at the Expo Centre. Ford DSFL was set up to be a critical step in the lifelong learning process of skilled driving.

The program addresses the inexperience of young drivers and helps young drivers improve their skills in four key areas that are critical factors

in vehicle crashes, including; Hazard recognition, vehicle handling, speed m a n ag e m e nt a n d s p ac e m a n ag e m e nt a s we ll a s i s su e s surroun d i n g d i s tr ac te d d r i v i n g. Tr a i n i n g i s conducted using a hands-on curriculum, and the entire program is available at no cost.

The students really enjoyed the d ay and the hand s - on ex per ien c e of learning by driving vehicles on a closed course. Special thanks to Ford and Webb’s Ford of Vermilion for the opportunity!
