Clandonald Country Fair

Under sunny skies and hot temperatures the Clandonald Ag Society held their 40th annual country fair on August 12 titled ‘Let’s Celebrate.’ The day kicked off with a pancake breakfast that included bacon, sausage, eggs and of course pancakes. Webb’s Machinery Scott Webb and Webb’s Ford Mike Webb were in attendance flipping pancakes. “ We come to the Clandonald Fair every year. I have been coming off and on for years,” said Mike Webb. The parade started at 11:30 a.m. and
continued for approximately 30 minutes as parade-goers watched on and children scrambled for goodies that were tossed from the passing floats. Cara Van Tighem and her son Alban were in attendance and commented that “Parades are our thing this year, we have been to a lot including this one, Myrnam, Vermilion and one in Virden, Manitoba.” Once the parade was finished, the crowd dispersed to continue enjoying the fair activities. The t wo person band ‘The Prairie Dogs,‘ entertained the crowd with upbeat country music, while attend-
ees had the opportunity to participate in various activities. Activities throughout the day included a 25-second timed watermelon eating contest, bingo, face painting, tractor pedal pushers, Clandonald’s amazing race scavenger hunt, children’s races and laser tag. New to the fair this year was mutton busting and a pig catching contest. Phillip Richards and his son John both participated in the face painting; with Phillip having a watermelon slice on his cheek, while John had his face painted as a Cheetah. “We live in Vermilion now, but try to come back home for the Clandonald fair
every year,” said Phillip Richards. A concession booth was available all day, as well as the exhibit hall which was full for everyone to enjoy. T h i s ye a r ’s e n t e r t a i n m e n t a l s o included Magician and Illusionist Sean Watson who has won great acclaim with performances at such casinos as the Las Vegas Hilton, MGM Grand and Mandalay Bay, as well as state fairs, corporate events, and product launches. Watson works his audience, and involves them in on-stage and close-up entertainment that elicits a wonderful combination of amazement and laughter. See more pictures on page 2

Minburn & District Agricultural Society’s 24th Annual Heifer Show & Bench Fair

It was a beautiful day for the Minburn & District Agricultural Society to hold its 24th Annual Heifer Show and Bench Fair on August 12. This included 8 - Heifer Calves Pen of 3 and 12 Yearling Heifers Pen of 3. The judges this year were Melissa Hall from Vegreville and Paige Wildman from Sangudo.
There were 252 Bench Fair exhibits from 26 exhibitors with a payout of $829. The Winner of the best double crust pie was Colleen Berg with a Saskatoon pie. Over the past 24 years since inception, Merial Canada has sponsored this event. This year the Overall Grand Champion received $250 plus 2.5 L of Ivomec a pour on for Cattle. The Overall Reserve Champion received $100 plus 1 L of Ivomec.

First of all, I have to apologize for the terrible writing in my last editorial. I typed my editorial on my daughter’s Chromebook thingy while sitting around a fire pit in my backyard on Saturday evening, and while I did proofread like I always do, I didn’t notice some of the backwardnesses. I had two other people read it before I emailed it to the office and they didn’t seem to notice either, so, I blame it on the itsy bitsy font on that tiny little screen; we just couldn’t see it clear enough. LOL. My son was on holidays in Newfoundland for 15 days, and early Sunday morning I was rushing off to Edmonton to pick him up from the airport

Pretty Bad, But Lesson Learned
and didn’t have time to stop into the office for a second look on the page. By the time I returned from Edmonton the paper was already sent for printing and I was mortified when I looked at the final version. Usually, I spend Sunday morning reading every word in the paper and doing final edits. I texted Sue when I saw my editorial and said “OMG I must have been drunk when I wrote that. LOL” (joking of course). Anyway, I feel horrible and can admit when I screw up, and that was certainly a screwup. Another lesson learned, never write when you are not completely focused and always proofread at least three times! I was expecting a lot of feedback from the public for the boo-boo’s, but surprisingly I didn’t receive any at all, not even from my Mom who reads every single word and has no qualms in telling me
when I mess up. I do appreciate her for it though as I learn something each time she points it out to me. Since I am on the topic of last weeks editorial, I can let you all know about another scam that popped up in my Mom’s email this past week supposedly from Netflix. The email was asking her to confirm her payment information. The kicker to this one is she doesn’t even have a Netflix account, but at the same time, she still forwarded the email to me to ask me if it was a scam. I can understand why she questioned it, it looked very much like an email Netflix would send, so please never reply to an email even if it is coming from a service you subscribe to, it is always better to pick up the phone and speak with them in person. So, again sorry for the mess I placed
in front of your eyes, but I certainly hope the topic of the numerous scams out there informed you of some of them, I wouldn’t want anyone of you to get ripped off by these scumbags. Second, the Vermilion Voice is celebrating our Agricultural community this week as fall is approaching and soon farmers will be out harvesting their fields. Remember to thank a farmer for all the hard work and dedication they put into providing the food we eat every day.

Animal shelters across Saskatchewan are joining forces to find new families for homeless pets this summer. Participating Humane Societies and SPCA’s will help hundreds of pets in need find their happily ever after during the Empty Our Shelters adoption event, August 18th – 20th, 2017 with hopes to find homes for more than 500 pets province-wide. The initiative of the Saskatchewan Federation of Humane Societies comes at a critical time as shelters reach seasonal capacity. Early this morning under a cloudless sk y and fullish moon, both our dogs spontaneously leapt to five alarm bell barking at a coyote yipping tight to the garden side of the yard in our loop. It bounced me abruptly out of REM sleep at an eye heavy 3 a.m., not nearly long enough prior my lids being finally brought down by the last pages of the Battle of Shiloh in “The Civil War” narrative by Shelby Foote. Generally, I am firmly in atten-

dance within the ranks of the night owl population but Murphy’s Law it wasn’t this morning. Just last Sunday my daughter Chelsea and I had spent most of a day readjusting the temporary fence of our outer ‘free range’ chicken run…so needless to say I did not get back to sleep well the rest of the night with fitful visions of a ransacked coop, debris in the yard like a feather pillow fight, and Wile. E. with a fat belly of my Leghorns and Red Rocks, curled up in the grass by the railroad tracks to the south sunning himself later that morning. Half asleep I got downstairs briefly to let the dogs out the door to reinforce their sovereignty in a cursory growling once around patrol of the house before smugly making a wagging “We showed him” return to the door. Only a couple weeks before we were informed with news of friends by the Fort, newly into poultry, having their flock practically eliminated by a ‘known’ thuggish pair of neighbour dogs, our planned

Out After Dark
Thanksgiving Turkey amongst the casualties. It had me home tonight in vigor re-inspecting the outer coop defences like I was Davy Crockett at the low wall of the Alamo. Perhaps an example with a better outcome needed here. Growing up on the farm I kind of got used to the occasional night of critters sneaking around out to do harm after dark. We always used to have trouble keeping our cats around very long back then with the yard flanked on three sides by Coulee…any coyote general would love an attack strategy based on those conditions. What the coyotes did not end up getting, the Great Horned Owls around would clean up. The last month our yard here beginning at dusk until day break has been the domicile of a pair of continually screeching Barn Owls, alternating the tops of our strategically tallest pine trees with their home base being the triangular metal plate at the very top of our HAM radio antenna. A full night’s sleep during this time has been sort of

tough to come by as a consequence. Last Saturday morning the base of the mast was piled with the fur and bone evidence of owl pellets…they mean to stay apparently which also means at least some unwanted rodents around here had a real bad night. I suppose the odd bat circling within our trees doesn’t hurt either…while checking out our owls from the back deck with a flashlight, I spotted a pair of bats strobing through the light beam between the roof and the massive Black Poplar tree in the back yard. Hopefully our new bat house put up at the barn agrees with them and keeps some around thinning out the mosquito population. Hopefully, our bats don’t get thinned out by the owls in the meantime…the night time is getting just a little crowded around here. All things above being considered, I’ve always enjoyed the quiet time I get late in the evening with the rest of the household asleep. Night time is one of my favourite parts of the day.
Overdose Prevention Awareness
August 31 is International Overdose Awareness Day, a global event to raise awareness of overdose and reduce stigma of drug-related death. In Alberta, opioid related overdoses are oc curring at an alarming rate. For tunately, many overdose deaths are preventable if medical help is given when you first begin to notice any symptoms. Here are the signs of an opioid overdose: - Their breathing is slow or they may not be breathing at all - Body is very limp - You can’t wake them up
- Blue lips and nails - Skin is cold and/or clammy - Gurgling or snoring sounds - Choking or throwing up - Pupils are tiny - Seizures If you come across someone or are with someone who may be overdosing, call 911 and, stay with them until we arrive. They may need your help while the ambulance is on its way. Due to the Good Samaritan Drug Overdose Act people who experience or witness an overdose and who call 911 for help will receive some protection under the law. While you wait for help, keep checking on them. Are they breathing? If not, begin rescue breathing. Are they

responding or breathing on their own? If they are still unresponsive and you have naloxone – follow the step by step instructions and administer naloxone. Naloxone can temporarily reverse the

Garden season is in full swing, and we have been eating fresh potatoes for some time. I really enjoy the food that comes straight from our garden to the table. Back when I was a kid, I grew up with lots of chores that included garden planting, berry picking, weeding the garden, picking peas and shelling peas ect. I often worked right alongside my parents or grandmother and aunt, and while I would have rather been playing, I learned how to stick with something I really didn’t care to do for the greater good. In those days the child labor law was that whatever your parents told you to do, well that was pretty much the law. While I was growing up, my family always had a garden, I believe to offset the cost of food for a large family. Today in addition to financial savings,

the main benefit of a garden is that it a source of healthful food, free of chemicals and therefore full of nutrients. If you don’t have a garden and think you would like on, you can begin by working up a plot in your yard, to get it ready for next spring. It that is not an option, lots of people container garden, growing tomatoes and produce on their balcony. You can also pick up fresh garden produce at the local Farmers Market. Do ask if it is organic, free from chemical sprays. On the farm, the raspberries and the nanking cherries are ready. We made some raspberry freezer jam and have frozen lots of raspberries for later use. I picked some naking cherries for a gelatin desert topping on a ricotta based cheese cake. You could also use raspberries, strawberries, mangos or any fruit of your choice that is juicy ( not pineapple or papaya). Both pineapple and papaya have enzymes that will destroy the gelatin structure and it will not set. Ricotta cheese can be used
as an alternative to cream cheese for a dessert with a lower fat content and higher protein content. Ricotta is made from whey and has t wice as much calcium and zinc as cottage cheese and four times more vitamin A, making it a healthy choice worth trying. If you don’t want to make the gelatin and fruit topping, a can cherry pie filling will work just fine. The oat base is gluten free and adds some heart healthy beneficial oats. It is not a very sweet dessert, so feel free to add more sugar to suit your taste. Riccotta Cheese Cake Bars Base 1/4 cup melted or soft butter 1 1/4 cup quick oats 3 tablespoons golden yellow or brown sugar Filling 2 cups ricotta 4 tablespoons sugar, I used golden yellow 1 teaspoon vanilla 2 eggs

4-H Fever celebrations were held in Olds, the birthplace of 4-H in Alberta, from August 3 - 7. Vermilion’s Bill and Shirley McGrath attended the Hall of Fame Luncheon on August 5, and d aughter s Ellen McLennan of St. Albert, and Catherine Lee of Edmonton joined them for the dedication of the cairn. The luncheon celebrated 2016 Hall of fame recipients, Corine Verbeek and Helen Andrews from the Northwest region, as well as Golden Clover recipients. According to Bill McGrath,
the luncheon honoured both past and present induc tees, many of whom were in attendance. McGrath was inducted into the 4-H Hall of Fame in 1995 for his many years of previous involvement with the Preston Beef Club, and 4-H in general. According to McGrath, another local H all of Famer is Irene Smith for her immense involvement with the Vermilion Horse Club. The cairn rededication served as a monumental celebration of 100 years

Topping 1 envelope of Knox gelatin 1/4 cup water 1/4 cup boiling water 1 1/4 cups mashed fruit and juice 1 tablespoon sugar, or to taste. Whipped cream for garnish. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Combine all the filling ingredients and press in the bottom of an 8” x 8” metal cake pan. Bake at 350 degrees for 10 minutes.Combine all the filling ingredients with an electric egg beater. Pour in the pan on top of the base. Bake at 350 degrees for 35 minutes, or until the center is done. Remove and cool. When cool prepare the topping. Add the contents of the gelatin envelope to ¼ cup room temperature water and stir. Add the boiling water and stir. Add the fruit and stir and then pour on the cake and refrigerate until set. Top with a dollop of whipped cream. Serve by cutting into squares makes 9, 12 or 16 servings.

The Little Cowpokes Junior Rodeo Association held their third of five events at the Lakeland College Arena on August 9. In the organization’s sixth year, little cowpokes aged 3 - 15 years old gathered to compete and have fun. “ We are ver y proud; the children have been tr ying so hard and have been having so much fun this year,” said Rebecca Fletcher. Events included barrel racing, pole bending, goat tail untying, goat tying, break away, and team roping. This year, the club has approxi mately 8 0 member s. The Hobman family travelled from Paradise Valley to attend, and so far has loved their first year of being involved. Siblings Katie (14), Anna (7), and Lily (7) all competed. “It teaches you life skills; not just how to work with hor ses, but how to work with people too,” said Katie Hobman. To support women and families living with Ovarian Cancer, the Vermilion Walk Of Hope will be held at the CN Station in the Vermilion Provincial Park on September 10. Registration beginning at 9:30 a.m. will be followed by the 10 km walk at 10 a.m., and the 2.5 km and 5 km walks at 11 a.m. Prizes will be given to the top
individuals and top teams. In order to participate, you can choose to volunteer, walk, or donate. There is a $25 registration fee for walkers over 18 with the option of joining a team. Ovarian Cancer Canada will provide tax receipts for donations over $20. Cash or c heque donations will be mailed receipts by December 31, and electronic receipts will be issued to those donating online.
It is expected that approximately 3,000 Canadian women are newly diagnosed with Ovarian Cancer each year. The Vermilion walk remembers Lyla Fee, a local resident who succumbed to the disease after fighting it for 12 years. There are only four walks supporting Ovarian Cancer in Alber ta, and according to www.ovariancanada.org, the disease is the fifth most common women’s cancer as well as the most

fatal. There is no reliable screening test for Ovarian Cancer leaving it often undetected until the later stages and resulting in a 55 per cent death rate within five years of diagnosis. (NC) It may come as a surprise that farmers are among the most innovative business owners in the country. They take managed risk. Rather than going all-in on a new idea that could potentially fail, they try something new in a managed scenario to see if it could lead to major gains down the line. The key is to try it on a small scale before investing heavily. 4. They are not afraid of failure. Farmers experiment all the time. Learning
from a failed experiment, recalibrating and moving on will make for better decision-making in the future. 5. They are persistent. They will not give up when the first try doesn’t go as planned. If they have an idea, they will use trial and error to find a way to make it work. 6. How To Weather Financial Risk For Your Farm
(NC) Risk is a given for any farming operation. Many factors — from weather conditions to political changes to market pricing — lie beyond a farmer’s control. But that does not mean they are left to the mercy of the elements when it comes to risk management. “Farming comes with inherent risk that needs to be managed,” explains Gwen Paddock, national director of agriculture and agribusiness at RBC. “But how much do farmers think about and plan for risk? So many factors can affect revenue streams and net profits beyond weather and markets, from employees to interest rates. The key lies in planning, starting with determining the worst-case scenario you are willing to accept in any given year.”
The best risk management approach starts with knowing the facts. Once you understand the risk factors, you can consider what actions for managing each loss or risk are appropriate for your operation. Here are three strategies: 1. Make risk planning part of your business strategy. The more you understand the types of risk you are exposed to, the more likely your decisions will be based on fact and analysis rather than emotion or instinct. Follow a systematic assessment and analysis process in order to arrive at a proper strategy. 2. Know your baseline for risk and be comfortable with it. Ask yourself how much you could afford to lose in your very worst year. For example, if weather takes out

How To Establish A Good Succession Plan For Your Farm Business
(NC) Family is often the greatest strength of a farming operation, but it can also be its greatest weakness. It is never easy to run a family business, especially when the interested parties may not have the same goals and aspirations as the owner. “A key challenge is figuring out what fair and equal means to all family members,” explains Gwen Paddock, national director of agriculture and agribusiness at
RBC. “This becomes particularly important when succession planning. Splitting assets equally is rarely feasible, as some family members may not be interested in being involved in the business and simply want their equity. Often fair and equal can be two very different things.” It is possible to have a fair and equal succession plan if you reward those who are working in the business at market value and give options to buy-in over
time. Make sure to value sweat equity and reward it annually rather than taking the “work hard now and you’ll be rewarded down the line” approach. It’s also important to develop a buy-sell agreement that addresses both value of the business and terms of the transition. Su c c es sio n planning shoul d be conducted as a business function, not a family social gathering. Here are three key questions to help start the conversation: 1. Do you really want the operation to continue after you exit? 2. When do you want to make the transition of assets and skills and how will you do that? 3. Who can truly take on the responsi-
bility of the business? Do they understand and can they manage the finances, risks and production sides of the business? Once you’ve had these discussions with all the relevant parties and considered their concerns, draft a will and a buysell agreement to review with them. Then everyone will know the rules of the game. Finally, you need a team of financial and legal advisors who can offer unbiased advice on possible options and make sure everyone keeps talking and working well together. Approximately 4,500 people attended the Haying In The 30’s event in Mallaig from August 5 – 6, fundraising $240,000 for victims of Cancer. Volunteers suited in historical costumes manned different buildings to give demonstrations to visitors. At the site there is a blacksmith shop, weaving shop, general store, saloon, North West Mounted Police station, and a CN station where visitors could learn Morse Code. New this year was a Hudson Bay Trading Post with artifacts and a trapper’s cabin. This year’s event included a barber, pre-cut birdhouses, and field demonstrations of binding and thrashing as well as a horse-drawn baler. The elaborate show is run by a 14 member board and approximately 300 volunteers. The crowd enjoyed a silent and live
auction as well as the teamsters and their horses. “It was amazing; very well organized. My children loved the homemade ice cream and bannock. I loved seeing the horses, plowing, harrowing, and harvesting. It was so nice to see all of the seniors doing the polka and two-step for hours on end. They also had a bazaar and live auction with all of the proceeds going directly to the families with cancer,” said Lorraine Kochan. Aside from all of the historic activities, meals were a large hit with speedy service. “For the August 5 supper, we fed 1,850 people in 58 minutes. Overall, this was the best event we’ve had in 18 years,” said President of the Haying In The 30’s Volunteers serve lemonade outside the saloon at the 2017 Haying In The 30’s event. Taking charge, seven ladies enrolled in a Women’s Self Defence Seminar held at the Kitscoty Legion on August 12. Nor-Alta Jiu-Jitsu Instructor, Dave Woods reviewed safety tips to ensure the women would make an effort to be aware
of their surroundings. He also taught the women skills on how to use their bodies as a weapon if ever in a situation where they were unable to avoid using words. His suggestions included knowing a family or friends phone number, knowing your address, keeping eye contact, and downloading safety apps to your devices.

Woods stressed the importance of letting someone know where you are, whether leaving a situation from frustration, or going for a hike. With assistants Carmen Stredwick and Sheena Neil, Woods delivered vocal and physical practice with padding for students to learn palm heel strikes, football kicks, elbow strikes, and knee strikes. “Elbows and knees are two of the strongest parts of the body for weapons, and the skull is harder than cement,” said Woods. Important tips were given for pivoting and helping the women to learn that in a dire situation of attack, their goal is to disable and escape. Woods said that he had initially joined Karate to avoid bullying, but learned through his training, self respect. With Karate, Law Enforcement, and Jiu-Jitsu training, Woods knows that he can fight if he has to, but certainly doesn’t need to as he can usually de-escalate situations by talking. “Think; your best defensive tool is your brain. No one is allowed to touch you without your consent. Period. As the assault situation unfolds ask yourself, ‘Where are my targets to hit,’” said Woods. With Woods wearing full protective gear, women had the opportunity to increase the intensity of their training. They did as was requested and responded explosively like firecrackers,
and when simulating an attack from their instructor, he found it much like grabbing a tiger by the tail. When asked what they learned, Rachel Zacharuk said, “I feel confident!”

Tradeshow Success During The Fair

Everywhere you looked attendees were buzzing around checking out the numerous vendors as they displayed the multitude of products. Local business owner Terri Hara-
siuk from Simple Pleasures Salon and Boutique was in at tendance at the Tradeshow and offered a wide array of products from dresses, shirts, scarves, accessories such as jeweller y and sunglasses, and beauty products and said it was an awesome turnout. “Traffic was really steady throughout and sales were really great. The Ag Society really organized the event very well,” said Harasiuk.

Harasuik also commented on how great the weather was this year in comparison to a couple of years. “I’m pleased that the heat didn’t keep people away, and thankful that it didn’t rain. A new shelter overlooks the Vermilion Gun Range, and with safety being a priority, the Vermilion Gun Club is home to approximately 350 members. “We try to do one big project every year, and the shelter was this year’s. On hot days in the afternoon and during rain showers we have somewhere to escape the weather. With the range open since 2002, it has been really good for us,” said Dave Moore. According to Moore, a few members

The Vermilion A & W will be hosting a Cruisin the Dub and Silent Auction event on August 24. In 2016, the event paired with Burgers To Beat MS, selling over $3,000 of A & W merchandise throughout the month of August. In 2015, the Vermilion location raised $18,000, and in the past eight years of hosting, they have raised over $8 million going towards MS. According to the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada, one in 340 people are living with the disease. The society notes that in the whole world, the neurological disease

A member of the Lloydminster Chapter of the MS Society and person living with MS, Brett Coe attended last year’s event noting that long term treatment is a touchy, underdeveloped area. “This is why we are seeking funding for improvements. The need is ongoing. It is a guessing game trying to improve symptoms. There has to be a better alternative than taking medications that neurologists aren’t sure will work for my condition.
