Chiefs, counsellors, gaming and government dignitaries gathered in Lloydminster to celebrate the sod turning ceremony at the site of the future Lloydminster Casino on June 12.

Blaine Favel emceed the event, and Poundmaker First Nation’s Elder, Jim Tootoosis, offered an opening prayer. Little Pine First Nation’s Chief, Wayne Semaganis, shared welcoming comments along with his hopes for creating something better for first nations’ youth.

“For many, they’re image of Lloydminster is wrong; it is the warmest community.

Thank you for helping to make our future better,” said Semaganis.

Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nation’s (FSIN) Second Vice Chief, Robert Merasty, shared his love of making positive announcements, and congratulated members on behalf of the 74 First Nations of Saskatchewan.

“To create jobs and training takes vision, commitment, and the building of partnerships. As a result, everyone will benefit by creating a better lifestyle for our people, while incorporating traditional values and

alleviating disparity within our communities,” said Merasty.

ML A of Lloydminster, Saskatchewan, Coleen Young, shared supporting comments, saying that in addition to employment, the project would provide economic development for the surrounding communities both during construction, and after when the casino is open for business. She also noted that the investment will benefit other sectors including health care, infrastructure, and education.

City of Lloydminster Mayor, Gerald Aalbers, congratulated members on the monumental occasion and wished them every success in their exciting and inspirational venture.

According to SIGA Director of Communications and Media Relations, Melody Lynch, the casino is expected to employ 140 people, and will disperse 50 percent of its revenue to Saskatchewan First Nations communities through the First Nations Trust. The remaining revenue will be split: 25 per cent to local initiatives through regional Community Development Corporations, and 25 per cent to the Saskatchewan Government’s General Revenue Fund.

ity (SIGA) Chairman, Chief Reg Bellerose, said that the casino will not only generate revenue, but continue helping communities for the long haul by funding areas like youth and elders.

The ceremony was redirected outdoors, where Seekaskootch Drum Group from Onion Lake Cree Nation performed a traditional honour song. Dignitaries were eager to grab a shovel and participate in the sod turning ceremony.

A luncheon was held in the afternoon at

the Lloydminster Days Inn, where Onion Lake Cree Nation’s Chief Wallace Fox, and SIGA’s President and CEO Zane Hansen, joined honoured guests in sharing their remarks. The celebration continued on June 13, at the Stockade Convention Centre with a complimentary barbeque for interested community members. Patrons enjoyed the cultural performances, and SIGA shared information on employment opportunities as well as information and displays on casino site development.

Linda Webb Jacobson Scholarship

The 2017 Allied Arts Linda WebbJacobson Scholarship was awarded to Bret t Miller- Bar ton at Vermilion Elementary School on June 13.

According to Allied Arts Chair, Keri Pullyblank, 11-year-old Miller-Barton is only in his third season with the Vermilion Samotsvit Ukrainian Dance group and has worked incredibly hard on his duet, solo, and two group routines. She noted that he had competed in three festivals this year: Lloydminster, North Battleford and Vermilion, receiving the award for Most Outstanding Male Solo at each one, as well as awards for outstanding group and duet routines.

Miller-Barton plans to use the $500 scholar ship towards at tending the Shumka Summer Dance Camp in July and is also excited to perform at Vermilion’s Canada 150 Celebration on June 30.

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE CANADIAN? Submitted By Vermilion Elementary School People from Canada welcome other people from different regions and cultures. Even if they’re different colours like brown or black, we don’t really care.

Those people live in a way different region. They get treated differently.

They have to hunt or catch their food, and we just have to drive to the grocery store. They sleep in little, tiny wood houses, and we sleep in big houses. I like to learn about other people and how they live.

Conclusion: I hope you guys feel the same way about these people; you might be one of them.

The sun finely came out on Saturday, June 17 for the ride for “Treads for Life”. This is the 2nd year the Treads for Life, from Lloydminster have organized this ride and fundraiser.

Steps for Life walk was in Lloydminster for previous 4 years - Threads of Life is the flagship for the Steps for Life

The group started out on this 340 km charity ride from Lethal Motorsports in Lloydminster and proceeded north on Hwy 17, then took Hwy 45 west and then 41 south to the Vermilion Co-op Gas station for a lunch time break. The afternoon ride went on to Hwy 16 to Mannville, south to Irma followed by a stop at Fabyan where Big Valley Sales

was hosting another checkpoint for Treads for Life. The last leg of the ride took them back to Lloydminster.

To date the group has raised approximately $34 000 and has held a raffle of only 400 tickets for a brand new motorcycle.

TD Bank Donates To Summer Reading Program

The TD Bank in Vermilion made a $500 donation to the Vermilion Public Li br ar y in su p p or t of t he Sum m er Reading Program on June 15.

“The TD Summer Reading Program is Canada’s biggest reading program for c hil dre n. T hi s fre e pro gr am i s offered at 2,000 public libraries across Canada. The Club celebrates Canadian authors, illustrators and stories, and inspires children to explore the fun of reading their way. This is key to building a lifelong love of reading. Children can take part anywhere—at their local public library, at home, online, or wherever summer takes them. Chil-

dren can sign up for the summer reading program starting June 27 at the Vermilion Public Library,” said Vermilion Public Librar y Manager Stuar t Pauls. “ This donation from TD will help us provide summer reading program prizes, including some great gift certificates to the top readers in this very popular program. Minister Aubrey Bell recently celebrated 50 years of service as an Anglican Church Minister.

He was ordained in Vancouver and Bell served there before moving to Ontario, where he served in many different communities.

“I retired, and then I got busy! My wife went off on a mission to Belize in South America, then came back and said we are moving Belize. I had always wanted to do mission work so I just went along with the plan and we were there for 4-5 years. We had a house in Scotland for many years, so then we decided to move to Scotland to

retire in 2001, but then I found myself busy again. We have always considered Scotland home because of our Scottish and Irish heritage. We moved back to Canada in 2007 because we missed our friends and family here, and you miss the Canadian seasons oddly enough,” said Bell.

Bell said the highlight of his 50 years as a minister was the work he did in Belize.

“When we left Belize, we had a crowd of friends to say goodbye. The people of Belize were some of the most developed people I have ever met. You never know if you made a difference, you hope you do.

It’s a calling, not a vocation. I was a banker, and voices inside me kept telling me to be a minister. It’s what I am to do,” added Bell.

The Battle River Trestle was completed on December 10, 1908. It is 2772 feet long and stands 195 feet above the river. Three men working on the trestle were drowned after their scow was swamped in mid-stream; their fellow workers erected a cairn in their memory.

The first train to cross the trestle was the construction train, bringing supplies for the railway to continue its westward crawl to Edmonton. By November 1909 that part of the line was finished, and trains could travel all the way from Wainwright to Edmonton. Photo Marie Conboy

Over the last 16 days my family has been cursed with an asbestos problem in the house we lived in for the last 7- 8 years. I always knew that asbestos was extremely harmful to you, but I never realized just how dangerous it could be until I had to deal with it.

Asbestos is a naturally occurring fibrous mineral which was popularly used in building materials because it is an insulator, has good fire protection properties, and is resistant to chemical erosion.

However, asbestos fibers, cause damage after they are inhaled, it can cause cancer and diseases like: Asbestosis – scarring of the lungs, which makes breathing difficult. Exposure to the mineral can also cause mesothelioma, a cancer of the

Of ten the world is turned upside down and inside out and the strongest man is shaken by death of a parent, child, spouse, family member, friend or a relationship ceases and is broken.

A dream dies for the future ,or what could have been. If their father had been a more positive role model, if there hadn’t been abuse, if their family was still whole and not fragmented. If life could have handled in a more positive way. When these losses are experienced one is left vulnerable, shaken and ‘naked’ so to speak. How can one model strength in the midst of such

Asbestos has been classified as a carcinogen by the WHO (World Health Organization). As I watched the men and women from Bioclean dress in protective suits and ventilators, it quickly became evident to me that this mineral is not something to monkey around with at all.

Those guys were very serious about taking precautions, not only for themselves but for myself and my family who were still living in the house. They would explain to me step by step what they were doing and all the regulations they have to follow when I asked. I’m sure I drove them all crazy with my endless questions, but they were so amazingly supportive and understanding of my concerns and answered them all very clearly and effectively.

Although Asbestos mines have been

closed since 2011 here in Canada Canadians are still exposed to asbestos without even knowing it. Asbestos can be creeping in many forms such as spray applied fireproofing, mechanical insulation, Linoleum, floor tiles, drywall taping compound and mud, Vermiculite, asbestos cement board and tiles, asbestos cement pipes, textured decorative coating and car brake pads and that is just to name a few.

I know many people have heard the commercials regarding Mesothelioma caused by asbestos exposure, but I never thought it would be something I would ever have to worry about, until now! Whether you are a homeowner or a business owner and plan on doing any form of renovations on your premises that was built before the 1990s make sure to have it checked by a professional before beginning any work.

You may think it is something you can do yourself, but believe me since watching this all unfold, I have learned that asbes-

The myth of Society is that “big boys don’t cry” and “ tough it out.” That is impossible to do with a broken heart.

It is known there are different grieving pat terns and many factors that affect how one grieves, but take heart there is no one way to grieve nor is there a right or wrong way or a specific time to be “over grieving.” One thing to note that one never need to stay stuck in grief, there are always supports and counsellors to assist in finding good coping skills through the grief journey to a “new normal” state of life.

Never be afraid to reach out and learn some coping skills to heal and to be healthy and whole. Don’t stuff your emotions but find a healthy way to work through your grief. (There is strength in weakness) . Find supportive friends ,who are understanding, read information on the grief process, listen and seek out counsellors or a good support group. Self medicating with substances is not a healthy way to process grief, it only numbs grief and one still has to face the impact of

grief, sometimes years later.

• Find routine in your out of control world that helps normalize your life • Your loss is unique and cannot be compared to anyone else’s. ( Your per so nalit y, other los ses, coping mechanisms, age, attitudes to death loss and grief, social supports and acceptance of myth of expectations that Man is strong and does not feel deep emotions.)

If I did not already have some knowledge of Asbestos, I might have put my family at risk. I may not have sought out the help of a professional and considered cleaning it myself, that would have been a humongous mistake! One thing I learned in this process which blew my mind was that one particle of asbestos in the air is so lightweight that it takes 12 hours for it to drop eight feet from the ceiling to the floor and one little breath of air can make it airborne again. I’m not be happy about having to move out of the house I have lived in for the last 7-8 years, but as someone who has been working with me throughout this process said: “It may be a blessing in disguise.” and I am beginning to think he was right! You are the only one who can protect your family from asbestos contamination when it it is found. Never let anyone tell you they remove it if they are not a professional restoration company.

Every day there is something new and interesting to learn, and the littlest unseen things can be some of the most important things. In our digestive tract are trillions of bacteria, with over 500 species. They have a huge impact on our health. It is remarkable how much science is learning about how our bodies really work.

Most of our immune system (over 70 per cent) is in our gut. Many researchers believe that up to 90 per cent of all diseases can be traced back to the health of our micro biome in our gut.

Our individual micro biomes are shaped by us, by the food we choose to eat, the amount of sleep we get, the stress in our life and the environment we are exposed to. Sterile lives of anti-bacterial

You may know this feeling too…going along in body but thoughts have you somewhere else to the point people can’t help but notice you, more often than not, coming to a stop in what you are doing and be staring blankly off in space.

I see a lot of that in people these days…an astronomic level compared to what I observed when I was growing up.

It was pretty hard for your body, mind, and focus to not be all in the same place (unless you were a pretty talented day dreamer). We weren’t carrying a smartphone around constantly so you couldn’t fire off a text/call to say ‘Hi…how is it going?” every time that thought (invariably) popped to mind…or be always available to the reception of that from everyone else. I suppose the ability to project presence existed then too but you had to be far more patient for opportunities to express it (snail mail, land line phone, etc) and it wasn’t something you were only restricted in by your conscious will from within: it just didn’t exist for you at all. Technology allows us, perhaps fools us, into thinking that we can really be two places at once…our body in a place we don’t want to be at the moment while our phone or device whisking our consciousness away to place where we really want it to be. That state of ‘distracted’… it really is ubiquitous now and I wonder if we humans are designed to be jacked

Gut micro biome plays an important role in obesity and leanness as well.

Researchers have discovered that when lean mice are implanted with the same gut micro biome as obese mice, they suddenly begin rapidly gaining weight without increasing their food intake. This is because the gut biome influences hormone production, like insulin and fat storage. The researchers then transferred the gut biome from lean mice to obese mice, and the obese mice became a healthy weight. The same result has happened with humans. What science knows is that the micro biome of lean people has more variety, more bacteriodetes and less firmicutes. On the other hand the micro biomes of obese people have more firmicutes, less bacteriodetes and less variety of species. Specific cultures that have been studied and

have proven to be effect for healthy weight and micro biome balance are bifidobacerium, lactobacillus gasseri, lactobacillus fermentum and lactobacillus amylovorus. Rebound weight gain is thought to be caused by the memory of the gut biome directing our food to be stored as fat, and it may be the root of the thrifty gene. There is research to suggest probiotics like acididophilus may increase weight gain.

Antibiotics contribute to the degrading of our micro biome, and even though we are not taking prescription antibiotics, we may still be getting them through the meat and dairy that we consume. Foods to avoid for a healthy gut flora are: sugar, processed food, omega 6 oils and food fried in them or made of them. When it comes to the micro biome, there is a direct correlation with the consumption of bad fat and fat storage.

Mannville Tornado Startles Locals

Mannville Farmer Troy Bader was only a half mile away from the landspout tornado when it touched down on his land on June 9.

“It was in the field and thankfully it didn’t do much damage. It was very stagnant; it sat on top of the hill for ages and it didn’t move. It looked like an oversized dust devil,” said Bader, who was sitting in his truck ready to take off in case it moved in his direction.

Bader said it lasted for 15 minutes in total.

“It sucked up all sorts of dust and that’s why it looked so dark. The clouds above us were very dark and it looked like something was going to happen.

When the rain started it covered it up and we couldn’t see it anymore,” added Bader.

It is not easy to measure wind speed in a tornado because a tornado usually destroys local measuring equipment,

and also because tornadoes only exist for a short time at random places and they are gone before meteorologists can study them.

Environment Canada confirmed it was a landspout tornado afterwards.

According to Environment Canada’s website funnel clouds, which usually appear with little or no warning, should be treated seriously, and nearby residents should be prepared to take shelter.

Funnel clouds are generated by weak rotation under rapidly growing clouds of weak thunderstorms. They do not normally pose a danger near the ground, however there is a chance they could intensify and become a weak landspout tornado.

The teens in the Interact Club are once again hosting a for t building contest at the Credit Union Parking Lot on June 30, during the Canada Day festivities in Vermilion.

Last year they had eight teams and according to parent, Kim Morritt, it was a complete riot - the forts were incredible!

The fun event had a team of students from J.R. Robson School take home the

champion fort builder crown.

“We’d love to get more folks involved this year,” said Morritt.

For those interested in ongoing activities, the Interact Club of Vermilion is a group for teens ages 12-18 that fosters community leadership and volunteering to help social concerns in our community and the world at large. It is the teen version of the Rotary Club.

Kathr yn Hotte, delivered a range of marketing strategies as she was h o s t e d b y t h e Ve r m i l i o n R e g i o n Speaker Series on June 14, at the Pomeroy Board Room.

The Town of Vermilion, County of Vermilion River, and Alber ta Works sponsored the Rural Alber ta Business Centre’s Small Business Advisor from Cold Lake, to share her expertise with the community; approximately 20 community and business representatives were in attendance.

Her suggestions inc luded being prepared by profiling the people you want to meet, and always having business cards on you. “ You can net work any where and everywhere; even the laundry-mat or

grocery store,” said Hotte.

S h e r e m i n d e d p ar t i c i p a nt s t h at how they look to others online is very impor tant, and referenced the Jef f B ezos quote, “ Your bran d is what other people say about you when you are not in the room.”

Hot te challenged par ticipants to create an elevator pitch; a sentence or two highlighting their skills or what they do.

“Every time you communicate with someone, you are selling your brand.

There is no one else like you in the world; use that,” said Hotte.

She went on to share a comical video that displayed different forms of communication, and she stated that 90 per cent of communication is listening. She suggested actively listening to improve understanding, allowing

you to find out the other people’s needs as well as to build respect, openness and collaboration.

Hotte suggested participants work to build relationships rather than to sell products. She suggested exercising generosity and doing things for others without expecting anything in return, as well as following up within 24 hours after making connections. “ I didn’t have any upcoming net working events scheduled, and while at the Speaker Series was invited to at tend a Rotar y Break fast - which could create a p o s i t i ve n et wor k i n g ex p er i ence with many community and business representatives in the future,” s ai d par t i c i pant , J o d i Kathryn Hotte speaking in Vermilion on June 14.

Upcoming Crisis Line Walk

The Vermilion and Area Crisis Line will be hosting their 6th Annual Walk/Run Event on June 22, at the Vermilion Provincial Park.

The Crisis Line has been operating since 1983, and local volunteers continue to raise funds to keep the service in our area. Local members continue to host the walk in memory of long-time member Susan Howard.

The Crisis Line is available to anyone of any age looking for support at any time, and their contact number is 1-800661-4606. Calls placed in Vermilion are answered in Edmonton. For those looking to volunteer and make a difference for someone in crisis or to make a donation, you can contact Judy at 780-853-5117 or

Shauna at 780-853-6996.

“We started the walk to raise awareness that the Crisis Line is available. If we can only help one person, that would be amazing. For some people all they need is just to have a listening ear,” said Judy.

Judy did go on to say that calls had been received in regards to suicide or elder abuse.

The walk is expected to be low-key; some with strollers, but runners are welcome to run a distance of 2, 5, or 10 km. There will be water stations along the route, and refreshments to follow.

Pre-registration is not required and will begin 6:30 p.m. at the CN station with the walk beginning at 7 p.m. The $25 registration fee will include a t-shirt or speedometer. Mistahiya Fun Run Success

Runners who attended the Denwood Outdoor Athletics Running Club Fun Run warmed up afterwards at the Mistahiya lodge.

Runners braved the heavy rain at this year’s Mistahiya Fun Run on June 10.

“Congrats to Michael Desaulniers-Guitard for having the best poker hand and winning our pair of brand new Under Armour running shoes from Marty Yurchak and Armstrong’s Sports Excellence in Wainwright. Thanks to San Marcos Pizzaria in Wainwright for their prizes and thanks to Mistahiya Retreat Centre for their hospitality. Kitscoty 4-H Beef Club Report

The Kitscoty 4-H Beef Club held our achievement day on June 3 at the Kitscoty Arena. We had a successful show with 11 members who showcased their steer projects, heifers, and cow/calf pair projects.

We also had 13 Cleaver Kids who showed off their spring calf projects. Our show began with a judging class for all members including the Cleavers. Judge Kurt Pederson demonstrated what he looks for in a finished beef steer, and then the members judged a group of four steers based on his criteria.

The show began with the Cleaver Kid program. We have 13 Cleavers this year so the ring was full as they showed off what they learned in grooming and showmanship workshops they had prior to Achievement Day. All of the kids worked hard and

persevered showing spring calves who only wanted to get back to their mommas!

The winner of the bull/steer class was Julia Bogucky and the heifer class was won by Brooklyn Labiuk.

Following the Cleavers, we moved into the rest of the show beginning with the grooming classes. Then the steer classes, female classes and breeders herd. This year we had three breeders herd groups.

This includes a steer, heifer and a cow/ calf pair, all belonging to one member.

We then ended the show with the showmanship classes. The Grand Champion steer was won by Cheyenne Porter and Reserve was won by her younger brother Austin Porter. Cheyenne also won Grand Champion female and breeders herd.

Luke Wennekamp won Reserve Female and Austin Porter won Reserve in breeders herd.

After the show we hosted a roast beef supper open to all guests which was followed by awards presentations. The day was finished off by our steer sale and slave auctions. It was a very successful day and we want to send out a huge thank you to all the steer buyers, trophy sponsors, slave buyers, volunteers and everyone who came out to support.

Our general leader Wanda Labiuk, has been a 4-H leader for 20 years and the club presented her with a gift for her many years of leadership. Wanda has been part of the club long enough to lead her own kids and then lead her grand kids as Cleavers and move into full membership. Wanda has remained a leader for many of those 20 years without having any direct family involved. She loves to mentor all the kids who chose to be in 4-H and so many have benefited from her guidance. She was the

driving force to get the Cleaver program running again in Alberta and Kitscoty was the “test” club for the program when it started back up in 2009/10. We are so grateful to have her and can only hope for many more years! Thank You Wanda!

Kitscoty Beef will be taking part in “100 Years of 4-H” celebrations that the Vermilion River District 4-H has planned for the Vermilion Fair. We are looking forward to getting together with all the other clubs within our district to promote and celebrate this milestone. We are also planning to be part of Kitscoty’s celebrations for Canada’s 150th in Kitscoty on July 1. Summer is time for 4-H camps and shows and several of our members will be attending various programs. We hope everyone has a great summer and look forward to start up again in October!

Mitch Visser, Fish and Wildlife Officer from Lloydminster, said that at this time of the year eggs are hatching and the adults are protective of the young ones they have.

“I would ask people to be patient because it will last for two weeks until the chicks get to water and they can fly a bit better. Franklin Gulls are considered a migratory bird and game bird, and they are protected,” said Visser.

Their nests are floating masses of rushes, cattails, and grasses built in shallow water and usually attached to emergent vegetation. Franklin’s Gulls form monogamous pair bonds for the duration of the nesting season. The Friends Of Vermilion Health Centre Society held their annual Garden Party in the Dr. Stewart Hunter Room of the Vermilion Health Centre on June 14.

Rain in the morning had the party moved indoors, but the community and volunteer support had everyone smiling

According to Recreation Therapist, Darlene Dary, all of the hospital departments donated silent auction baskets.

With an overflow of things to choose from, attendees were kept busy while visiting and enjoying the strawberry shortcake, coffee, and juice.

were awarded with prizes. Kirby Whitlock enjoyed wearing a fresh flower hat and tie creation to the event, and had residents laughing at his leafy ensemble.

“The Garden Party is an excellent event that brings the community to our home and reminds residents how important they are to our community,” said Dary.

Lea Park Cattle Association To Divvy Out $390,000

Following the 2013 sale of their land, the Lea Park Cat tle Association (LPCA) will be disbanding and dispersing of $390,000 on June 21, at Lea Park.

The LPCA will be hosting a supper for t he pu b li c as they g at her wit h the recipients. Sevent y per cent of the funds will be staying within the surrounding community including Tulliby Lake, Heinsburg, Marwayne and Haying In The 30’s. The remaining 30

per cent will be given to the Stollery and STARS. According to Secretary/ Treasurer, Tracy George, the LPCA has been operating 64 years with local members volunteering their time.

“In 1949, a group of farmers donated funds to build the sale grounds as an alternative way to sell their cattle so they did not have to go to auction. The challenge arose because the cattle in the area had to be ferried across the North Saskatchewan River,” said George.

According to George, the operation worked well in the past as it was created to service smaller ranchers, but now with farms being larger and people being able to fill their own liner loads or find alternative sale methods it was becoming less efficient. George said that the non-profit societies past sales had been recognized by others

who said, “There’s no sale like it in all of Alberta.”

“I can’t express enough how unique it was. It was a total community event whether you were involved with the cattle or making the many homemade pies,” said George. “ In t h e e ar l y ye ar s, c at t l e were trailed in on horseback before being trailed to the ferry, and to Marwayne’s train station. It was the outcome of a bunch of ranchers wanting a better way to sell their cattle,” said President, Lanni Bristol.

The 64th Annual Wainwright Stampede and Rodeo is all set to open a n ot h e r a c t i o n p a c ke d S t a m p e d e running June 22 - 25 at the Wainwright Ro d eo Ground s, hosted by Wainwright Stampede and Rodeo of Alberta. Stampede President Murray Bretzer encourages everyone to turn out for this year’s special 150 Stampede.

“All around it will be a great event for the whole weekend. We will have the rodeo slack and the chuckwagons starting on Thursday and running right through until Sunday. We have events ever y d ay and they are all good! We have a bunch of the big names entered and coming in for the Battle of the Buckles finals. Hopefully, we’ll have some good weather and that the CPCA chuckwagons will get four days of good running. Our sponsorship has held its own this year, it’s been a little tighter all around, but we have the same great sponsors who have stuck by us through thick and thin. Student Enterprises At Farmer’s Market

As part of their Enterprise and Innovation option class, 51 J.R. Robson Grade 8 students joined community entrepreneurs at the Elk’s Hall for the Vermilion Farmer’s Market on June 13.

The new option class was a hit as many of the students reported both learning new business skills, and having a lot of fun working with their classmates. Teachers Myvahna Ishaq and Monique Hart connected students with many community members throughout the trimester to encourage their entrepreneurship, marketing, and advertising, as well as helping them to create business plans.

“Seeing how their projects have come together has been an awesome turn of events,” said Hart.

According to Hart, students had to create their own product lines which were required to have a multicultural

theme to incorporate with Canada’s 150th Birthday. Homemade products available included lip balm, a card game, candles, Oreo Cheesecake Cupcakes, wooden coasters, wildberry juice, popcorn balls, dream catchers, bath salts and bath bombs.

“The best par t was the feeling of accomplishment we had after getting the juice into the jars. The hardest parts were getting the labels the right size, and managing money and investing in the right stuff,” said Owen Atkin who was part of the team that made Kompot (a wildberry juice originating in Eastern Europe that can be served warm or cold).

Students worked together having the opportunity to be creative and making products that many would have used themselves.

“It was really fun being part of a group that got to create something that is ours,” said Allecia McDonald.

Vermilion Army Cadet Awards

The 2645 Vermilion Army Cadets, Loyal Edmonton Regiment, held a parade and awards ceremony at the Vermilion Agricultural Grounds on June 17.

The corps saw 15 – 20 cadets this year aged 12 - 18. A couple of the local members will be attending cadet camp in Whitehorse this summer.

Lt.-Col. Rob Tesselaar shared his feelings of Cadets being an excellent program, giving children opportunities to learn and develop leadership skills.

“Whether or not you choose a life in uniform, it sets you up for success. The corps in Vermilion did an excellent job

preparing for their parade today,” said Tesselaar.

The Vic Tillet Memorial Award was presented to Cpl. Johnson. Training Officers Recognition was given to Sgt. Moyen.

Best Overall was awarded to Warrant Officer Gannon. The Command Officers Award for Diversity was awarded to Sgt. Yaceyko. The Captain Henry’s Award for Leadership along with a Commanding Officer’s Coin was awarded to Chief Warrant Officer Thomas.

“The skills you learn today will help you throughout the rest of your life. Congratulations on making the effort and commitment needed to be a cadet,” said Tesselaar.

From my point of view, nature is the buffalo that roam where we have hunting-free spaces on the land we call Canada. The fish that we fish in our lakes live a life before we bake or fry them.

Even the bears, racoons, birds, rabbits, and hares are in nature. We also have plants. For example, roses silver birches and caraganas are nature. Think; what does being Canadian mean to you?

On Tuesday, June 13th the Grade one and one/two classes traveled to Elk Island National Park for their year-end field trip. While at Elk Island, the students had the opportunity to go pond dipping, go on a nature hike, make grass whistles, play at the large playground and have a picnic lunch. The pond dipping was a highlight of the day, as the students caught and saw many different kinds of bugs, insects, frogs and birds. It was a great, fun-filled day that everyone enjoyed!

The Grade 6 class welcomed our mayor, Mr. Bruce MacDuff, as he explained his role in our local government. The students were informed of the various roles and tasks that it takes to be mayor. He also offered them insight as to how they can help Vermilion be the best that it can be and how to become involved in our local government. Thank you for your time and wisdom Mr. MacDuff!

The Grade 7 classes received the opportunity to go to Fort Edmonton and experience life in the past. The students started off with a tour of the fort and the chance to build a travois and make bannock. The kids then toured through time and experi-

Alumni Kevin John co-facilitated the Kairos Blanket Exercise with his cousin Glenda Bristow. The Blanket Exercise is an interactive workshop designed to help participants understand how colonization of the land now known as Canada, impacted the people that lived here long before the first settlers arrived. Grade 9 students took on the roles of Indigenous peoples within Canada. Standing on blankets that represented “Turtle Island”, our students were walked through pre-contact, treaty-making, colonization and resistance, under the direction of the facilitators.

Glenda narrated, while Kevin portrayed the role of a European colonizer. Each student was given an item (beadwork, moccasins, sash, moss bagged baby, travois, snowshoes, etc) to help them identify with a First Nations, Métis or Inuit person. Also, colored cards were handed out, which ultimately determined their outcome (tribe extinction, smallpox victim, residential school survivor, 60s Scoop child, etc). As historical events were presented, blankets were folded smaller to demonstrate the loss of land. It was followed by a debriefing session, in the form of a traditional talking circle, where students were able to share thoughts and feelings about what they had

learned. This powerful ceremony educates with the hope of increasing empathy.

Elementary students gathered for the final Happigrams of the year in the Gathering Area on Thursday, June 15. The Grade 5 students entertained the large crowd with a variety of songs played on the recorder. The grade five students have only been playing the recorders for a few months and they sounded amazing. “Hot Cross Buns”, “Ode to Joy”, and “This Little Light of Mine” were some of the songs performed by the entire class, small groups of students or individual

students. Well done, Grade 5! Congratulations to all the June Happigram winners for their patience, for their hard work throughout the school year, and for all they have accomplished.

The grade three room was full of trepidation these last week as all of their caterpillars metamorphosis into beautiful Painted Lady Butterflies. On Tuesday, June 13, Mrs. Martin brought in a Butterfly Cake for the students to decorate. In the afternoon the students took the butterfly houses outside and with sadness and excitement they released the butterflies.

Grazing School For Women Alberta Agriculture and Forestry held the 15th annual Grazing School for Women at Lakeland College from June 13-14. Day one consisted of a tour of the Lakeland College GrowSafe project, where participants took parts in plant identification and a judging workshop. The second day was a classroom session which outlined important benchmarks in operation, AUM’s, pasture health along with a producer marketing panel.

Producers who follow the MIG system manage for both the benefit of livestock and forage. The women observed livestock graze in each pasture long enough to harvest the forage but are moved before eating too much of the leaf area.The Original Grazing School for Women is a 2 day workshop for ranching and farming women, and was sponsored by the MD of Wainwright, Smoky Lake County, Vermillion River, Lamont County, Beaver County, Battle River Research Group, Cows and Fish, Two Hills County and County of St. Paul. The Grade 4 classes travelled to Edmonton on June 7. They toured the Hudson’s Bay trading fort, Fort Edmonton. Students learned how to grade beaver pelts in the grading room and they toured John Rowand ’s impressive house. John Rowand was the Chief Factor (manager) of the Fort. Many students realised how life was ver y different back then. Students then toured some of the buildings of 1905, which was the year Alberta became a province. They had an awesome experience and are grateful for all the parent volunteers that joined their trip.

J u n e 8 a n d 9 s aw t h e G r a d e 6 students go on their field trip to Camp Encounter for two days and one night.

It was another successful year. All campers stayed in cabins with their friends, and ate delicious meals in the mess hall. The smiles of the students told many stories of rock wall climbing, tipping canoes, shooting bags of chips with an arrow and being hunted in the rain. Songs were sung and skits were performed around the campfire, resulting in many laughs. A great time

Who would have thought that a whole school year would come and go so quickly? Here we are wildly finishing up curriculum, planning final exams and field trips. Our staf f is organizing many yearend activities for students in all four divisions such as track, Canada 150, baseball games, AR Celebrations and swim trips. We want to thank the many community members who have suppor ted our students in the building and while they are off campus. The learning that takes place through these par tnerships is invaluable.

Grade 7 to 12 students were lucky to hear a power ful stor y of choices and consequences from Greg Drew out of Fort Langley, B.C. His touching story of loss and growth impacted all who were in attendance. We can only hope that his message will remain with our youth for many months to come.

You might want to be on the lookout this summer for an orange shirt for your children. On September 29, all schools in Buffalo Trail Public School will be acknowledging Orange Shirt Day. This day has been set aside to recognize the harm the residential school system did to children’s self-esteem and wellbeing. It is a day to demonstrate our commitment in ensuring that ever y child matters. For ty-two years ago, Phyllis, a 6-year-old girl, was getting ready to go to school for the first time.

Phyllis came from a family that did not have a lot of money, but her grandma

managed to save enough to buy her a new orange shirt for school. When she arrived at the residential school, they took her shirt away and made her wear a uniform. She never saw her shir t again. From that point on, the colour orange led Phyllis to believe that her feelings did not matter and that no one cared; she felt like she was worth nothing. We will be learning about the 150,000 plus indigenous children, who from 1831-1996, attended residential

schools. We will be educated on the history of residential schools in our country, so that we may learn from it, and know that every child matters.

Our ‘End of the Year’ Barbeque will take place on Friday, June 23 followed by soccer games for Grades 1- 4 and ballgames for Grade 5 and up.

Our elementary classes will be holding their Track and Field day on Tuesday, June 27. If there are any parents who would like to come out and help, please let Mrs. Hinton know. And then there is the elementary trip to Vegreville to watch a movie and have a swim in the pool there on Wednesday, June 28.

The last day of regular classes for students in Grades 7- 11 is June 22.

During exam week students need to hand in permission forms in order to leave the school after exams. A little reminder to our bus students that once you have left the school, you cannot return to take the bus home.

The Vermilion Roar Peewee Team held their Year End Tournament combined with a Novice Team held a Festival on June 9 -11.

The arena was bustling as several teams gathered to compete and enjoy the festivities.

“I like that it is an indoor sport, and it’s great exercise for the children,” said

parent, Shelley Fillion.

The Peewee teams entered a 10-team double elimination with the top team going to provincials, while the novice teams had a mini tournament. Vermilion hosted teams from Cold Lake, Bonnyville, Lloydminster, and Flagstaff.

“We’re grateful for all of the community support and the many donations for our draws,” said parent volunteer, Roralee Bucharski.

They have to hunt or catch their food, and we just have to drive to the grocery store. They sleep in little, tiny wood houses, and we sleep in big houses. I like to learn about other people and how they live.

Learn To Play Baseball U-16 Soccer Strikers Win Gold

The Vermilion U16 Boys soccer team brought home gold from the Camrose Soccer Tournament on June 3 and 4. Diarmuid Dalton, Vermilion Soccer U-16 Boys Coach, said the squad of 17 players played well and have potential to do well at the Provincials this year.

The team is currently unbeaten in their league this season and has not conceded a goal.

The Lakeland Cup league final will be the next big challenge for the team, and Vermilion has played and beaten three out of the five teams in their group so far. Photo submitted

St. Jerome’s Elementary Track Angela Mouly Reporter

Cheering and excitement flowed outdoors at St. Jerome’s School on June 16, as elementary students began their track and field early to avoid the poor afternoon weather forecast.

Older students assisted at different stations, and children were bursting to put their best efforts forth.

Vermilion Strikers U14 Boys Team 2 faced Cold Lake’s Team 1 on June 16, during the 2017 Lakeland Cup Soccer Tournament for U14 and U18 girls and boys from June 16 - 18. “They’ve been working hard with Mr. Wasylik in gym practicing for the various events. We are very proud of their effort today,” said Teacher’s Assistant, Robyn Roshuk.

Roshuk went o n to say that the students had been patient between events and gave lots of encouragement to one another while watching the races.

People from Canada welcome other people from different regions and cultures. Even if they’re different colours like brown or black, we don’t really care.

Those people live i a way different region. They get treated differently.

They have to hunt or catch their food, and we just have to drive to the grocery store. They sleep in little, tiny wood houses, and we sleep in big houses. I like to learn about other people and how they live.

Conclusion: I hope you guys feel the same way about these people; you might be one of them.

A penalty is if you trip someone, you will go in the box for two minutes. The box is a little room and your partners or someone’s partners will be in there doing the penalty minutes. And the goals; to get a goal, you will have to shoot in the net but there will be a goalie in the net.
