It Can’t Happen To Me

The passenger, Courtney Brea Hames, was pronounced dead at the scene of a mock-accident held to create awareness for students about dangerous driving habits on April 24 - 25, in Vermilion. Fellow Grade 12 St. Jerome’s student, Gabriel Quickstead, also acted a part; being the driver in the same car who screamed in pain and eventually acted unconscious due to loss of blood during the ‘It Can’t Happen To Me’ presentations at Lakeland College Emergency Training Centre. When Emergency crews arrived, they determined that the driver of the other (green) car had fled the scene. “The hardest part of this situation is waiting for help to arrive,” said Prairie EMS Paramedic and Supervisor, Rob Snow. Much work goes into the preparation of the mock-accident and the additional
presentations geared to send a valuable to all of the students that attend. The presentation has been hosted by the Mannville - Minburn - Innisfree Family and Community Support Services (M-M-I F.C.S.S) for the past 19 years. Grade 9 students from J.R. Robson School attended the presentation on April 24, while Grade 9 students from St. Jerome’s School attended the performance on April 25. With blood dripping down the side of the car, and very real visual and audio account of what can take place at the scene, students were gasping and noticing just how cold the morning was. Additional presentations were given by the RCMP, Fire, EMS, and Lakeland Funeral Services. Students also had the opportunity to see how physiotherapy, x-rays, and hospital services are used in such an event. “It can take up to 45 minutes to cut
people out of a car. It’s not just you, and it’s not just drinking and driving. The reality is: it’s not just the girl died; it is a person’s family and friends lives that change forever by drivers’ texting or talking to their friends, etc. It is all of us that have to be making smart choices when behind the wheel,” said Snow as he gave a detailed description of what can happen at the scene of an accident. Firefighters peeled back the windshield and worked with the Jaws of Life to remove the roof of the car so that the EMS crew could safely get the bodies out of the damaged car. The failing but surviving occupant was put on IV while still in the car, then loaded onto a stretcher and gurney, incubated and loaded into the ambulance. The deceased actor was removed, placed in a body bag, and loaded by A student gasps at the sight of the mockfuneral home staff into the coach. accident scene in Vermilion on April 24.
