Children spun wildly with excitement during the Space - themed Carnival at St. Jerome’s School on March 2.

As part of their Leadership Class, Grade 10 students organized booths, decorated the school, contacted businesses, and volunteered to run the Carnival. The Carnival is a service project that provided the students practical, hands-on life lessons on how important it is to give back to where you are from according to Teacher, Allan MacMillan who remembers attending the Carnival in 1971 when he was in Grade 1.

“It’s a kid-run Carnival. The big focus is on what the children learn and the positive feeling they get when they complete a job so well done,” said MacMillan.

People of all ages ventured out to support and enjoy the festivities. Chil-

“Businesses in the community have been ridiculously supportive. Ever y year I am always amazed at the quality and quantity of items donated. Without them, this wouldn’t be possible,” said MacMillan in reference to the silent auction items.

MacMillan went on to say that for the last number of years, the Carnival has raised enough funds, allowing them to take every Grade 10 student that wanted to attend the Provincial Leader- Jillenna Bangun enjoyed having her face painted at the St. Jerome’s Carnival.

Town Manager Dion Pollard Leaves Vermilion

To w n M a n a g e r D i o n P o l l a r d announced last week that he would be leaving his position at the Town of Vermilion to start a new position as the City Manager at the City of Lacombe in April.

Pollard said it was not an easy choice for him and his family to make.

“Vermilion is a great community, and it has been a great place to raise our kids and a great place to work,” said Pollard.

Po ll ar d, w h o b e g an h i s mu ni c i pal career with the Town of St. Paul’s Department of Parks and Recreation in 1998, started as the Director of Communications in Vermilion in 2003, until he was promoted to the position of CAO in

2011.

He says he is excited about the new position which will be in a city three times the size of Vermilion with four times as many staff and a police service that operates a city police.

“There will be a lot of similarities in the new job, but it will be on a bigger scale. From a professional standpoint, it’s a nice step up for me. Lacombe is a part of the Province that we always thought would be a nice place to live.

It was my first interview for a job in 14 years.

Looking back on my time here, the building of the Vermilion Regional Center is one project that I am proud of.

I am also proud of the development of the Town in the last five years that we

Informative and interactive Environmental Sciences sessions were held at Lakeland College’s ‘Go Enviro’ Seminar in Vermilion on March 3.

Vermilion’s Lakeland College offers four majors in Environmental Science including Conservation and Restoration Ecology, Wildlife and Fisheries Conser vation, Water Conser vation and Management, and Environmental Conservation and Reclamation.

Participants had the opportunity to get hands on experience by trying two mini-labs focused on any of the four majors. Prospective students and their families were also invited to listen to guest speakers (alumni students now working in their field of choice), and attend campus tours of the residence and recreation facilities.

Guests enjoyed celebrating World Wildlife Day (March 3), during the Wildlife and Fisheries Conservation mini-lab session. Participants were quizzed by being asked to identify mammal, bird, and fish species during the session.

Photos included that of an Elk and a Great Blue Heron taken in the Vermilion Provincial Park. Alberta’s provincial fish (Bull Trout) and Alberta’s provincial mammal (Bighorn Sheep) were also

included in the photos, sharing that students in this program had taken a field trip to the mountains and were within a few feet of Bighorn Sheep. “ Yo u h ave to l e ar n Bighorn body language,” said a current student, explaining that because t h ey are n ot s hy yo u don’t want them to treat you like one of the herd.

Gary Laursen On Thursday, February 23, 2017 Mr. Gary Laursen of Cold Lake passed away in the Bonnyville Heath Centre at the age of 71 years. Gary will be forever loved and remembered by his two children Mary Konieczny of Vermilion, and Dale (Linda) Laursen of Pierceland; 5 Grandchildren Dellaney Konieczny (Travis Klym), Raylynn, Larissa, Leanne, and Renay Laursen; Siblings Connie Wyss, Evelyn Drake, Alan Laursen, Faye Lepine, Bud Laursen, Ronald Laursen, Pat Lefebvre, and Glen Laursen; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Vermilion Mayor’s Prayer Breakfast

MC Brad Shellenberg welcomed the crowd who attended the Mayor’s Prayer Breakfast at the Vermilion Regional Center on March 1. A letter from MLA Dr. Richard Starke was read. Jim Storch recited The prayer Unity and Harvey Hussey read the Perseverance and Courage prayer. Lynda Moses read the Family prayer, Ken Farkash read Clear Communication, Brad Shellenberg read Patience and Grace, Andrew Kinoti read Balance and Openness and Dave Kenney said the Wisdom prayer. In two months time, I will be standing by my best friend while she marries the man of her dreams in a dress she picked out for me. I swore I would try and lose 50 pounds in the six months before the big day, but so far I have failed miserably. Partly because I very seldom have the time or energy to drag my ass to the gym or out for a walk and partly due to the cost of buying all the healthy food I should be eating every day.

I am pretty sure I am not the only person who has noticed the humungous increase in their grocery bill over the last while, and even though I try to eat healthy most of the time it has become increasingly difficult to do so with the price of food.

Eating Healthy Is Hard

T h e ot h er d ay I wa s wa n d er i n g around the grocer y stores tr ying to find the best deals on meats, vegetables, and fruits and to be completely honest it didn’t matter where I went in town the prices were pretty much the same. Vegetables such as broccoli, lettuce, tomatoes and the such were priced crazy ranging from $5.97 for a bunch of broccoli to over $6 for four tomatoes and lettuce was over $3. I also looked at some boneless skinless chicken breast that would cost me over $35 for six, a roast of beef about the size of one and half of my hands (so maybe 2-3 pounds) was over $20.

A small little pack of blackberries was over $4 and not even enough in it to give each member of my household more than five or six each. I guess it wouldn’t seem so bad if I didn’t have a family of four to feed and only had to worry about myself, but am I going to do that? No. I would want my family to

be able to eat healthy as well if I am.

So, when you look at the cost of feeding a household of four on prices like that, it is going to cost you an arm and a leg for one meal. One evening, I purchased the items needed to make tacos, and by the time I left the grocery store it cost me almost $60, and that didn’t include the items I would need to make a side dish to go along with the tacos. I think that is ridiculous. I can just imagine how much it cost families of six or seven.

I want to eat healthily, and my family wants to eat healthily, but with prices like that, I don’t think many people can afford it any more than we can. I think it is sad when a family wants to make better health choices but are forced to make the less healthy choice due to the price of food. Maybe they should consider raising the price of junk food and lower the price of healthy food, or maybe our Premier should have

thought about the bigger picture before burdening us all with a carbon tax that will ultimately make our grocery bill even higher.

The long and shor t of it all is if eating healthy breaks your bank you’re not the only one feeling the pinch.

Check out the net and see if you can find alternate recipes for feeding your family healthy on a pauper’s budget I have found a few healthier choices that may not break the bank.

Kids: Help Name 14 RCMP Foals For Canada 150!

Hey kids, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) has a contest just for you!

This year, in celebration of Canada’s 150th anniversary, the RCMP needs your help to name 14 foals born this spring at the RCMP breeding farm in Pakenham, Ontario. A winner will be selected from each of the 13 provinces and territories in Canada. In addition, for the first time, an entry submitted by a school class will be selected.

“Here’s a chance for kids to be a part of history, by coming up with a name for one of

the 14 foals,” says Inspector Patrick Egan, Officer in Charge of the Musical Ride. “This year with adding the school class entries, it gives a great opportunity for students to work together and come up with a name.

Wouldn’t it be cool if your class submitted the winning name and the foal becomes part of the world-famous Musical Ride some day? It’s possible if you send in an entry to the 2017 RCMP “Name the Foal” contest.”

To qualify, entries must meet the following criteria: · names must begin with the letter “O”; · an individual entry must include a child’s first name only, school, city, province or territory and email address; · school class entries must include the

teacher’s name, school, city, province or territory and email address; · entrants must be 14 years old or younger; · only one entry per child will be eligible; and · online entries must be received no later than April 30, 2017.

In the event of duplicate winning names, the first entry received will be accepted.

Winning names will be chosen by instructors of the RCMP Musical Ride Branch.

Contest winners will be announced in May, along with the foals’ names, on the RCMP website. Winners will receive a number of great RCMP prizes such as a 2017 Musical Ride pennon, a framed picture of the foal, a t-shirt and pins.

Our new additions to the family have been a handful. However it’s a good way, of course, they sure know how to rule your heart, and one just can’t help but smile watching them.

I have been getting a lot of exercise as they love their walks, and every walk is an adventure. Sir Mukluk and Miss Noel are growing so fast they don’t follow me anymore, I follow them now.

Sir Mukluk who is a big ball of fur can move like the wind when he likes to run; Miss Oohohh also enjoys the pups, and they are constantly playing. Miss Oohohh is doing much better with them now, she plays a little more gentle now, at the rate the pups are growing that’s a good thing as I am sure they will both be bigger than her. It’s not that Miss Oohohh is small by any means, in fact, she is a perfect size, a true working sled dog size. I am not sure where the AKC and CKC, [American Kennel Club and Canadian Kennel club] got their size standards from, as both organizations register the breed standard and desired size for Alaskan malamutes of 23 inches (58 cm) tall [at with-

I just had the crew at the Vet Clinic for a checkup and had them all weighed.

Normally we all think that dogs hate going to the veterinarian, but here in Wainwright, we have an outstanding clinic.

Dr. Judy as we call her has an allfemale staff so the pups get a lot of attention and they like it there, which makes it an easy adventure instead of a dreaded trip. The pups also weighed in the big category, although the kennel club’s that set all the standards, also recognize some of the Alaskan Malamutes known as ‘giants”. There are many out there that are 150 lb plus and huge, in my humble opinion, probably a lot closer to the original breed that was working dogs, some of these dogs can pull thousands of pounds or over 1000KG by themselves.

The Alaskan Malamute was a freight dog known for their extreme power pulling those weights on wheeled carts, snow and even natural ground surface. Years ago I sledded moose out of the wilderness with my team.

I think what impresses me most, other than their awesome loving personality’s and desire to please their owners or handlers, is their ability to handle almost any kind of harsh weather. In fact, they love the snow and cold weather and are much more active in those conditions.

Just last night it was minus 20C with it being approximately minus 30C with the windchill. I felt concerned for the pups being outdoors in their kennel. They have an indoor house lined with fresh straw and wool blankets to lay on, and I take them into the heated shop quite often, which they don’t mind for a short time, but regardless how cold it is they want to be outdoors.

I love watching them play in the snow, Miss Oohohh has been teaching the pups the comical mouse pounce, which they can hear mice under the snow and will jump straight up into the air and dive head first into the snow. They will plow around under the deep snow and at times totally disappear under the snow; although Miss Oohohh is quite successful at the catch, the pups are still a little slow on the mouse count. Some of the windblown in snow drifts are so hard that I can walk on them just like solid ground, it’s very amusing to watch all three of them pouncing on the hard snow trying

The pups are big enough now for little further walks and many of the deer, moose and elk are starting to lose their antlers now, so as one of my favourite activities I will have lots of help finding antlers. Antler shed hunting is not only a challenge but a great way to spend the day outside and get a lot of exercise, mostly I love exploring the woodlands, finding an antler is like a treasure hunt. It is even more rewarding if your dog finds it, Miss Oohohh is good at finding antlers and was easy to train, I have been indirectly training the new pups, simply but giving them antlers to play with and chew on, when they get older we will get into the serious training. Right now although I have lots of plans for the pups, I am just letting them be pups and enjoying that stage, Miss Oohohh has been great on training them…I’m sure it’s all the bad stuff though.

I suppose sitting at Dad’s shoulder over the years at many a small town coffee shop and listening in on the latest fishing prospects at some lake or debating the merits of one make of farm machinery over the other strained me beyond my adolescent level of patience with the whole affair. Well… occasionally there would be some ongoing banter between his pals or n e i g h b o u r s o n s o m e g ove r n m e n t program that would crash the economy or in my adult years the conspiracy theories like Y2K disaster outcomes that would have me more interested in c o nne c t ing t he d ot s of t houg ht processes that arrived at the obtuse conclusions. The Y2K ones were so

My grandmother was born as “not a person”. Fortunately due to the work of brave men and women, she became a person in her own lifetime.

Sadly aboriginal women are three times more likely to suffer abuse and violence, and they are also more likely to die as a result of it. This needs to change.

Working from home for a few years I manag ed to ac quire a routine of making tea in the morning to start my day. That may be some of my English background finally percolating to the surface in adulthood. It seems to have brought me more into the fold of joining in on the ‘going for coffee’ excuse.

So…whatever cup gets you through the day is fine in my books.

In truth…Dad drank so much coffee I got to the point I could no longer stand the smell of the stuff. It’s funny that… the ubiquity of it all. For a time while I worked on the road around Alberta… the drive thru wasn’t as established yet and going into a café in the morning for breakfast and not wanting a coffee it got you an initial incredulous look in mid-tip of the pot to cup before the realization hit you might actually want something else. OJ was my drink of choice (because I wasn’t into caffeine yet) but that sure never built you any cred at the table —with wait staff or

Changing deficiencies in equality requires recognizing and correcting the faulty thought patterns. We can celebrate how far we have come as a country in gender equality and continue to press forward for the benefit of all.

Tragic House Fire Strikes Second Vermilion Family

On Sunday, February 26 the family of Jean-Claude and Danielle Rousseau, located a few kilometers southwest of Vermilion, lost their home tragically in a fire.

According to Danielle Rousseau, the fire began in the laundry room of the house, inside the dryer. Both the Mannville and the Vermilion Fire Departments attended the scene and Firefighters had to demolish the house to quench the flames.

“They got out with only the clothes on their backs,” said one Mannville Fire Fighter who was on the scene.

“Our t wo young sons, four-yearold Daxton and five-year-old Hudson, were luckily not at home at the time. My husband was outside when he first saw the smoke. He called 911, and then went into the house to see if he could save any of our animals, and he managed to save

Children were bursting with excitement during the many activities that took place at Vermilion Elementar y School (VES) from February 27 - March 3.

On February 27, 28, and March 3, VES hosted their first set of Talent Shows for many years throughout the lunch hours. The Talent Shows were organized this year to replace the previous Air-bands held at the school and showed promise for positive change.

“This is the first time in many years we have had this much interest with approximately 20 students volunteering to share their talents. Though the

The Reid family from Vermilion, who also lost their house to a fire on February 8, have been in contact with the Rousseau family and say that they will be giving the family any extra donations which they received and are not using.

“We have been in contact to talk about our losses, and it’s like we are part of an exclusive club that nobody wants to be part of. It’s heartbreaking, especially when you go back out there and you see the devastation of what is left. We are lucky that we still have most of our family photographs because we had them backed up on my husband’s laptop,” added Rousseau.

The family has since been staying at the home of their in-laws in Vermilion.

Excitement At VES

project. Staff and students who made donations were allowed to wear a hat inside of the school. KIVA is a nonprofit organization with a mission of connecting people through lending to alleviate poverty.

To raise awareness, all three Grade 3 c lasses par tic ipated, with some students making posters and a broadcast to remind ever yone in school about Hat Day. Grade 3 students were in charge of counting the proceeds from Hat Day. The students will lend the $207.55 raised to a KIVA member from one of the countries they are studying (Peru, India, or Ukraine), and will track the progress of the repayment throughout the year.

On March 2, the VES Basketball Club held a game against the VES staff. Approximately 35 participants registered for the club in early January, and have been practicing twice a week since then.

Lakeland College will be hosting Little Royal from March 10 - 12, complete with rodeo performances, a judging competition, ranch, stock, and dog demos, minilabs, tours, and dance.

“Little Royal has a really strong history with Lakeland College going back over 40 years,” said Dean of Agricultural Sciences, Josie Van Lent.

The two main focuses of Little Royal are showcasing what Lakeland College’s Clubs do, and showcasing the school to prospective students. Prospective students and their families are invited to spend the weekend gaining a firsthand view of residence, academic, and club experiences.

Students from approximately 15 other post-secondary schools will be competing in the CIRA rodeo and the 29th Annual Western Canadian Judging Competition.

On March 10, the Equine Centre will hold the judging competition at 9 a.m., an Agility

Club demo at 4 p.m., Stock Dog Demo at 5 p.m., and a Ranch Rodeo demo at 7 p.m.

Ag-citing mini-labs and tours will be held at the Mead building from 9 a.m. - 4 p.m.

On March 11, the Equine Centre will hold the Stockman’s Club Junior Steer and Heifer Show at 10 a.m. followed by the Open Show, Rodeo slack at 3 p.m., and Little Royal Rodeo at 7 p.m. The Rodeo Dance will begin at 10 p.m. in the Lakeland College Gym. Rodeo Tickets are $10 per person with those aged 10 and under being free, and dance tickets are $15 per person.

On March 12, the Equine Centre will hold rodeo slack at 10 a.m., and the final performance of the Little Royal Rodeo at 2 p.m.

Tickets will be $10 per person, with those aged 10 and under being free.

With so much action in one weekend, Little Royal will likely see plenty of competition as well as plenty of opportunity for current students, club members, and alumni to share their experiences of what life is like at Lakeland College.

Myrnam 4-H Multi Club Communications Competition

On Tuesday, February 21 the Myrnam 4-H Multi Club held their annual public speaking event at the Derwent Community Hall.

Brodie Pashulka started the event with the 4-H pledge. The event continued with all other members giving their speeches or presentations. The night included eight speeches from Junior and Intermediate members and three presentations were given from Intermediate and Senior members. All members did a wonderful job and presented on topics ranging from “A Man’s Best Friend” to “Goose Hunting.” Judges for the night included Jodi Gueutal, Jai Buck, Bree Patterson, Kelsie Peterson, Marie Lychak, and Donna Lopaschuk.

The hall contained many family and friends who came out to support our public speakers.

A special thanks goes out to Altalink, Nick Yanitski, and Diana Saruk for sponsoring the event. Thank you also to the Derwent Community Hall for allowing us to use the facilities for our functions.

Prevention is the best management strategy for both diseases. A long rotation between canola crops (1 in 4 years) is the single most important preventative strategy for clubroot.

Fields that have clubroot problems have a history of a short (often 1 in 2 years) canola rotations. Equipment sanitation is very important: clean dirt from equipment, including tires, when moving between fields or when equipment is crossing your land. Use extended rotations with broadleaved crops between cereals/corn crops. Treat seed with fungicide before planting.

Submitted According to Canadian Agricultural Injury Reporting (CAIR) statistics, more than 100 people die every year in Canada from agriculture-related incidents, and many more are injured on the farm. Annually during the third week in March, the Canadian Agricultural Safety Association (CASA), in conjunction with the Canadian Federation of Agriculture (CFA), organizes Canadian Agricultural Safety Week with the goal of keeping farmers, workers and members of farming communities safe. This year’s campaign, which takes place March 12 to 18, is the second installment of the three-year theme Be an AgSafe Family and will focus on the wellbeing of adults.

Understanding safety protocols Safety is everyone’s responsibility.

Farmers need to clearly communicate which procedures workers should use

when handling machinery, livestock and hazardous materials. Workers need to follow protocols and provide feedback when amendments should be made to procedures. A simple safety policy that’s shared with all workers should be implemented in every workplace, and ongoing training is another necessary step towards diminishing hazards. All members of the farm team need to participate in safety initiatives and follow best practices.

Be prepared Sometimes all it takes is a split second for an agricultural incident to occur. Being prepared can save a life. Members of farming communities can better equip themselves for dealing with emergencies by doing the following.

• Keep first aid kits handy in tractors and other vehicles, at home, and in workshops.

• Enroll in fir st aid and CPR

Making Family Farms Safer For Kids

Submitted As of the 2011 Canadian census, there were nearly 105,000 farm families in our country making a living from crops, livestock and market garde­ning. That makes for a lot of parents and kids who live, work and play near potentially unsafe environments. And that is why this year, the Ca­na­dian Agricultural Safety Association is launching a new three-year theme for Canadian Agricultural Safety Week: Be An AgSafe Family. For 2017, the March 12-18 campaign will focus on the tagline Keeping Kids Safe.

According to Canadian Agricultural Injury Reporting, a national safety program,

preschoolers living on family farms are twice as likely to die from an accident as regular children. These fatalities are most commonly the result of being run over, falling from equipment or drowning. Keeping an eye on the kids at all times is probably the greatest single thing farm parents can do to help keep their kids safe.

Tips for keeping tabs on kids 1. Talk with your child and ask them to identify the dangers on your farm. Help them see hazards they might not be aware of.

2. Explain the rules for safe play and repeat them often.

3. Keep children out of the farm yard unless there is a parent with them.

4. Set aside a safe play area (such as a lawn) that is clearly defined. If you leave your children alone outdoors to play, consider enclosing the area with a fence and using a gate with a safety latch.

5. When assigning farm chores to kids, make sure the tasks are age-appropriate, especially when it comes to using equipment and vehicles.

Dr. Nelson Visits Vermilion Play

Submitted On February 21 and 22, Dr. John Nelson and his assistants, Lori King and Brenda Hager came to Vermilion Play Development. Dr. Nelson demonstrated how to brush your teeth properly with his model teeth and toothbrush. The children were then given a chance to try themselves. Dr. Nelson asked the children questions about their teeth and talked about what food harms their teeth. He then stressed how important it is to brush their teeth in the morning and at bedtime and make sure we floss once daily. The children then participated in a couple of fun activities and were each given a special bag of a toothbrush, flossers, and some sugar-free gum. The children were very excited about their visit from Dr. Nelson and continued to talk about their visit during the day.

Lubeck says the ribbon was always about helping the industry help itself where safety is concerned. Often they hear great concern from farm owners and operators about the health and safety of their workers or their children, with less concern for their own wellbeing. “But it’s not just about the workers being safe,” she says, “owners need to lead by example; don’t just talk the talk, walk it.” Wearing the AgSafe ribbon, like the proverbial string tied on your finger,

serves as a reminder that everyone plays a role in ensuring safety is practiced on a farm. “And, sometimes, we just have to celebrate the things that we do right,” Lubeck adds.

Anderson agrees, clarif ying that even though these ribbons serve as a reminder and conversation starter, this is not a remembrance campaign. “It’s a hopeful message, to work towards that ideal where no one is hurt farming,” she says.

As the ribbons are released in Februar y and people star t to wear them through March, Anderson believes much will be learned from the resulting discussions. “Anybody from your ag equipment rep, to grandmothers, to farmers from British Columbia to Newfoundland, to government representatives, anybody can show their support for farm safety,” To find out more about the AgSafe Ribbon campaign or to order ribbons, visit agsafetyweek.ca.

The Innisfree Minburn 4H Beef Club held its February meeting in Innisfree on February 1.

The Leaders Tour was held on February 5. On February 10th we had our club Communications Competition in Minburn. Everyone did a great job on their speeches. In the Junior Competition Camille Kassian placed first, Carson Kassian placed second and Chase Forsyth placed third. In the Intermediates, Tyson Rudolf placed first, Courtney Cannan placed second and Dylan Cannan placed third. In

the Seniors, Megan Rudolf placed first, Logan Nott placed second and Triton Nott placed third. In Senior presentations, Morgan and Madison Nott placed first. Good luck to those moving onto Districts, which will be held at the Innisfree Rec Centre on February 25. Some of the members will be participating in District Curling which will be held on March 12 at the Innisfree Curling Rink. If anyone has Ivomec or Eprinex Pour on jugs, they would like to recycle, please contact one of our members by the end of February. The next meeting will be on Photo submitted March 1 in Minburn.

The money raised from the Carnival helps Grade 10 students attend the Alberta Leadership Conference held annually in May. St. Jerome’s students and staf f, wearing their pajamas, were treated to delicious pancakes with whipped cream and strawberries and sausages. This Shrove Tuesday Pancake Breakfast was put on by the High School Student Council and cooked by members of the Knights of Columbus on Tuesday, February 22. Thank you for your gracious and generous kindness. A special thank you to Taylor McNeil, Mrs. Dieken and Mrs. Forsyth for all they did that morning to make this a very successful meal.

communit y of Holy Name of Jesus Parish and the students and staff of St. Jerome’s gathered to celebrate the beginning of Lent. Father Roger reminded each of us that God desires us to repent from our sins and to turn back to Him. During these 40 days of Lent we are encouraged to spend more time in prayer, doing charitable work and fast.

Heart and Stroke representatives will be at St. Jerome’s on Wednesday, March 8 for the Jump Rope for Heart Kickoff. Grade 1 to 5 students will have the opportunity to raise money and win prizes.

Last Thursday, March 2 we experienced an alarming afternoon as the fire bell rang throughout the school shortly after the lunch break. We’re proud that our students calmly and cautiously evacuated from the sc hool before emergency personnel arriving. False alarm!: the event was triggered by a faulty sensor in the system; students and staff resumed classes shortly after the conclusion.

In basketball news, the junior boys won their home tournament at J. R. with a close game against Marwayne.

Marauders also won the Northern Playoffs and brought home the banner of victory. Senior boys won at Kitscoty by

more than 50 points.

We have some extra yearbooks left from years 2001, 2004, 2006-2012, and 2014-2016. If you’d like one for a cost of $20, please contact the office. The yearbooks are hardcover and full-size.

This year’s yearbook is currently under construction with work being done by a young group of students and is also for sale. Cost is $37, and order forms are at the office.

We popped with happiness as our crew lent a hand to other crew members in need last Friday. Several students and staff helped prepare, bag, and sell buttery popcorn at lunch, donating proceeds to one of our Marauder families in a time of need for help. Coming up, we’ll be selling snow cones at lunch in efforts to further help this family.

A group of our Archery students are refining their skills and training for a trip to the National Archery Tournament in Edmonton on March 17.

Elementary report cards will be coming home on Thursday, March 23. Parentteacher interviews are scheduled for March 30. Classroom teachers will be requesting to see some parents, but you are also more than welcome to book an

interview if you would like to discuss your child’s progress. Please note the school is having a “Celebration of Learning” in May. All children and parents will be invited to come to the classrooms and see what your child has been learning!

A huge congratulation goes out to one of our Grade 11 students, Crystal Steel, who has been selected to represent the Vermilion Rotary Club in the 2017 Rotary Adventure in Citizenship Program.

Crystal has been awarded an expensepaid trip to Ottawa from April 30 - May 3, where she will gain first-hand experience “behind-the-scenes” at many of our National institutions.

Fifteen elementary participated in the elementary Cooking Club with Mrs. Campbell this past month. The students were able to prepare and enjoy a variety of dishes including four types of pancakes, stuffed baked potatoes, pizza bread, apple muffins, and mini taco nachos to name a few. Important skills that were worked on included reading a recipe correctly and measuring ingredients properly. Cooking Club was a lot of fun!

In Mr. Martin’s CTF course they are learning about the importance of First Nations, Metis, and Inuit games. The students have a chance to research what games were played and the importance of them. The students will be taking turns teaching their peers how to build and play many traditional games throughout the term. The students have been eager to learn new games and to eventually teach them to our elementary students.

VES raised $380 for p ur p l e p i n k i e day last week. This support contributed to the community raising over $700 to help eradicate polio. That is truly Being the Best We Can Be, VES. Teachers in VES spent February 24 without students for a school-based professional learning day. These days are focused on school wide professional learning that addresses the needs unique to our school. Mabyn Grinde and Sandra Beres were able to be at our school to increase our understanding of Truth and Reconciliation.

They had us participate in a Blanket Exercise that focused on the experience of First Nations peoples.

individuals participated in that. Then on March 1, it was Hat Day, put on by the Grade 3 classes to raise money for their Kiva project. They raised $207.55. Kiva is an organization that allows you to lend money to people in other countries to improve their quality of life. Grade 3 students will work in groups to select a person or group to lend money to from the countries studied in social (Ukraine, India, Peru or Ukraine). For the remainder of the school year, students will track how much of the loan has been paid back.

The loans from last year have all been repaid. Global citizenship is part of the grade 3 social studies curriculum.

The Friends’ Committee also organized a talent show. They had approximately 20 entries that spanned over three noon hour recesses. The talents ranged from singing, dancing, and i n s tr u m e nt p l ay i n g to c ar d tr i c ks,

Rubik’s cube solving and a short play.

The staff even entered a jug band.

March’s virtue is Sportsmanship. The goal in sportsmanship is not simply to win, but to pursue victory with honor by giving one’s best effort. Ethics in sport requires four key vir tues: fairness, integrity, responsibility, and respect.

At our assembly on Tuesday March 8, VES will once again be participating in the Great Big Crunch. The Great Big Crunch is a healthy eating promotion which sees schools across the country simultaneously taking one great big crunch of a healthy fruit or vegetable.

In 2015, VES crunched apples, last year it was carrots, and this year we will be crunching celery. This healthy eating promotion teaches the importance of healthy snacks as well as provides information about the healthy fruit or vegetable we are crunching.

March 8. Please feel free to join us for our Great Big Crunch, as there will be plenty of celery for everyone.

We are well into the new year and many of you may already be struggling with your new year’s resolution commitments to get more exercise this year. Still others might be waiting until spring to get more active. You may have lots of reasons to include more physical activity in your life like physical health benefits, socialization, to increase energy levels, to lose weight, or just to fit into those old jeans. You may be surprised to know that regular exercise is also a wonderful way to reduce the symptoms of depression and to boost your overall mood.

when we experience an imbalance of these chemicals, we can be left feeling sad and depressed. Alberta Health Services reports that, “exercise can change the function of chemicals in our brain, similar to the effects of medications and therapy.” This means that exercise can assist in improving mood in people who are suffering from mild to moderate depression. One in eight adults report experiencing depression and depressive symptoms at some point over their lifetime so this is great news for many of us.

When we exercise, especially aerobic exercise like jogging and walking, we stimulate the chemical norepi nephrine which may help the brain to deal with stress more efficiently. Any

exercise can help and even you are only active for 10 – 15 minutes you can feel the positive effects like increased mood, bet ter sleep, and increased energy. For optimum results, exercise at least 3-5 times per week. So if you are feeling as though you may be depressed (feeling sad or down for 2 weeks or more and/or this feeling is beginning to negatively impact your life) talk to a health care or mental healt h profes si o nal. T hen c h o ose an activity you enjoy like swimming, walking, yoga, gardening, cross country skiing, snowshoeing or whatever appeals to you and get moving. Enjoy both the physical AND mental health benefits while doing something you love.

The Mental Health Capacity Building in Schools Initiative (MHCB) is an integrated, multidisciplinary team approach providing promotion, prevention and early intervention addiction, health and mental health services to children, families and communities.

Hypothermic Half Marathon Run In Edmonton Runners braved the minus 12 weather conditions on February 26 for the 2nd Hypothermic Run in Edmonton this year. Runners from the Wainwright Denwood Outdoors Athletics Club (DOAC) running group travelled to Edmonton to attend the event. Premier Notley also participated in the race and braved the piercing winter winds.

Baby Elle and Baby Rian were at Vermilion Elementary for Roots of Empathy last week. They are both growing so much and the students are thrilled to be able to watch their development and growth. This week the students learned about how as the babies reach new milestones in their development safety becomes a huge responsibility and worry for parents. Now that the babies have reached the gripping objects milestone they want to learn about the world around them by using their 5 senses, one of which is taste. Since they haven’t learned what should and shouldn’t be tasted everything goes into their mouths. The students shared what they have learned about baby safety as well as asked the babies' moms questions about how they make things safe for Baby Elle and Baby Rian.

Being A Hockey Mom Is Hard Work But Totally Worth It

Hockey mom Carla Myshaniuk has her three children in minor hockey this year, and she says it is busy on the road every weekend during hockey season.

“It’s great. I love the social aspect to it, you get to chat with other parents in the stands, and we get to talk about our kids. It can get very passionate. Sometimes parents from opposing teams can get very feisty,” laughs Myshaniuk, who works at Hardy Financial in Vermilion.

Despite the long hours driving up and down the Province to hockey games as far away as Olds and Rosetown, this hockey mom says it’s all worth it.

“Watching the game is the best part of being a hockey mom. You get to scream out proudly or cowbell in happiness when your child scores a goal, and you get to be there and watch it happen, and there are lots of hugs and high fives from the teammates and other parents.

Myshaniuk says the biggest expense is the gas because of all the driving to games.

“Last weekend I filled up my car three times. I don’t find the gear too expensive because the children can pass it on to the next and it lasts a long time. The sticks break a lot, so you are constantly buying sticks. Fast food is expensive too when you are on the road every weekend, so we try to picnic as much as we can. You get sick of rink burgers by the end of the year that’s for sure.

If your kid is constantly winning, like mine is right now, then you will be on the road even more with playoffs. My eldest daughter has five games in the next week,” said Myshaniuk.

She added that as crazy and hectic as hockey is she wouldn’t change it for the world.

“My children love the sport and watching them participate in a sport they love Hockey Mom On The Road makes me so proud of them.” she said.

7th Annual Greenspiel Courtenay May and Jaida Freeman had a blast during the Greenspiel in Vermilion on March 3.

The Enviro Club held a fun curling bonspiel at the 7th annual Greenspiel at the Vermilion Curling Club on March 3 and 4.

The limit number of teams was 20, with 5 curlers and only 4 people on the ice at one time.Team costumes were worn and cash prizes were awarded.
