NetScience Goalie Coach
Angela Mouly Reporter
Lloydminster’s Steven Larry, Owner of NetScience Goaltending, began his hockey journey with the Lloydminster Blazers. At 16-years-old, as a midget goaltender, he began his coaching career working with a younger cousin’s team during practices. I played my minor hockey in Lloydminster for the Lloydminster Blazers. He went on as a goalie coach assisting a peewee team in Kitscoty where the team won provincials, and he was listed as a goalie coach on the championship banner. “I coach because I love to help kids feel confident,” said Larry. According to Larry, the lessons that he learned from being involved in hockey are comparable to the ones he learned from his parents and older relatives. He wanted to help children love hockey as much he does, and build them up to be confident in whatever else they venture to do. “Hockey has helped me to become who I am, and I believe sports to be a huge part of any child’s success as a person. I have learned from hockey that hard work and persistence most certainly pays off; that anyone can develop any skill they are willing to work at, and that doing what you are passionate about is always worth the risk!” said Larry. Larry’s objectives as a coach include being fair, a good role model and preaching fun. Appreciative recipients of his methods are Yasin family. The family was introduced to Larry in the spring of 2016, while Salem Yasin was goaltending in grassroots hockey in Lloydminster. “At that time, Salem had aspirations of

joining mainstream hockey, and we were concerned with his ability to compete and be successful at that level. Upon meeting with Steven and explaining our desire to have Salem prepared for competitive league hockey, Steven went all in tailor designing an eight-week program specifically for Salem. The program was focussed on increasing his physical ability, mental ability and knowledge of technical aspects of the game to help Salem be prepared for the upcoming season. To our surprise, Salem was committed to the program which included on and off ice sessions. Steven has gone as far as to accommodate our needs and scheduling included but not limited to picking Salem up from home when my wife Nettie and I could not make it due to work or other commitments. Steven also held a goalie camp in August to which Salem registered and participated. Salem gained extensive training and worked with some other instructors on the ice that Steven had assisting him during the camp. Being in the camp secured a lot of the technical skills that Steven had worked on with Salem previously during his eight-week training. With all the other goalies that were in this camp, we were able to see how Salem had grown his game. Salem was competing! Shortly after Steven’s goalie camp (Netscience) Salem was in another goalie camp put on by Mind the Net Goaltending School at Steven’s advice. Again Salem was exposed to top training with instructional, visual, on/off ice training. Travis Harington is the director of Mind The Net Goaltending Schools and Clinics and

participated during the training along with Steven. The main focuses were on head trajectory, positioning and repetition of the save sequence. Salem has also joined the Hockey Academy with Steven’s recommendation through Bishop Lloyd School which is run by former NHL player. Lance Ward. Steven is also an instructor for the goalies in this program. Also attending one of the recent NetScience goaltending camps, Salem is now in Peewee Tier II Hockey, and is extremely happy and excelling with his performance. Since meeting Steven and participating in his programs, Salem has become more active and has noticeably
become more sociable with his teammates, as well as at school and in general. Overall his confidence has grown immensely in all aspects of his life. Steven has done an amazing job with Salem, and he is developing at a rate that we could only dream of a short nine months ago. I believe Steven is a great trainer and individual, and genuinely cares about his students and will always go the extra mile! Steven has been an instrumental piece in Salem’s development on and off the ice, and we will continue to use his services and recommend him to others. Steven is always prepared for every session and always has the right people on his team,” said Salem’s father, Tarek.
