Over 150 people gathered at the Vermilion Senior’s Centre on January 6, to celebrate Ukrainian Christmas Eve (Sviaty Vechir). This is the second year that Senior’s centre has held the celebration, and it has already become a major fundraiser. Many ladies in the community volunteered to bake traditional Ukrainian dishes in order to provide the full menu -cultural meal. Babas (grandmothers) were encour-

aged to bring their family for an ‘authentic as possible’ meal without having to m ake it them selves. The menu included Kutia (wheat), Borsch (beet soup), Nachinka (corn meal), Holubtsi (cabbage rolls), Pyrohy (dumplings), Nalysnyky (crepes), Pidpenky (mushrooms), Kalach (Christmas bread), Pampushk y (fruit filled dumplings), Kubasa (sausage), baked salmon, pickled herring, meatballs and gravy, mashed beans with garlic, along with homemade buns, salad and pickles, stewed fruit, and a variety of desserts. A candle in the window represented

the desire for relatives to find their way along with a star in the entryway, an extra place setting to represent deceased members of the Ukrainian community, hay under the table representing Christ having been born in a manger, and the Kolach (Christmas bread) was braided in three strands representing the Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. The Kutia (boiled wheat with poppyseeds and honey) is also called, ‘God’s food,’ and was the most important part of the meal. Twent y-t wo of Elsie Quickstad ’s family members came to celebrate with her including grand and great-grand-

children. “I am thrilled the whole crew was able to make it. Some travelled from Edmonton, Lloydminster and Clandonald to join in the celebration; including a couple of dancers,” said Elsie Quickstad. After enjoying the meal and visiting, families stayed to enjoy presentations of song and dance. Kate and Sarah Lychak from Sherwood Park memorized and sang two songs in Ukrainian, and members of the Vermilion Ukrainian Samotsvit Dance Club performed several traditional dances.
