Costumes and dancing filled the stage at the Lakeland College Alumni Theatre on De c em ber 21, as VES Grades 1 – 3 students performed their Annual Christmas Concert. The evening show included Christmas carols by the VES Choir and soloists, Chloe Maxwell and Olivia Elder. It also featured a theatrical musical stor y about saving Christmas af ter Santa suffered a head injury. Kane Fadden played Santa Claus and Chante Ford played Mrs. Claus, w h i l e s eve r a l s t u d e nt s h e l p e d by taking turns narrating parts of the story so the audience could understand. With several costumes of bakers, carolers, and elves, per formances were enj oye d im m ensely by fami lies in the audience. An addition to this year’s concert was the explanation of ‘mummers’. Grade 2 students
re-enacted the Newfoundland tradition of visiting homes dressed in elaborate disguise, and dancing. Having moved to Vermilion from Newfoundland this year, VES’s newest music teacher, Ashley Taylor, led the students on piano and guitar. “I am happy to have the oppor tunity to share what the students have practiced during their two months of preparations. It’s nice to see their love for music, entertaining, and how determined they are to be the best that they can be,” said Taylor. M any of the stud ents have also enjoyed their time this year in music class. “I liked learning about music and dancing. Thank you Miss. Taylor for helping us practice,” said Grade 3A’s Cas sie Cam ero n, who m em or ize d carols, a gingerbread song, and a mistletoe song. “I like singing. I had fun learning and
dancing in music class this year,” said Grade 1B’s Ryker DeFord. With only a few sleeps until Christm as, t he stu d ent s were al so ver y
eager to spend time with their families during the holidays; and looking back at how good they had been, they were very eager for Santa’s arrival.
