Making Christmas Wishes Come True

Santa’s Anonymous is a communitywide initiative, and that’s why it has been around for over 20 years. It was started because of a simple wish to see every child receive a new toy at Christmas. Every year volunteers from the community work together before the delivery day at the ATCO Gas warehouse to make Christmas dreams come true. Head Elf Dolores Coates-Lingley, who has been a Santa’s Anonymous Committee member for the last 21 years, says that the reason she remains involved is for “The Spirit of Christmas.” “There are families that don’t have things, and this is one way we can help them have a better Christmas. We have 60 families and over 100 children this year, and we are delivering earlier on December 17. It is a very hard time right now in Alberta. The families are overwhelmed and grateful

for the help every year especially on delivery day. It’s all about the children and Christmas,” said Coates-Lingley. “The number of hampers we can give out all depends on the amount of food and donations we get in. It’s the real spirit of Christmas, and it’s almost like the real Santa Claus except we don’t deliver on Christmas Eve,” said Santa’s Anonymous member George Matechuk. There were many volunteers involved from the community that raised money and donated toys. Volunteers from the Outreach School filled the children’s wish list on December 15. Every child will get one item off their wish list. The fire department and the Lion’s Club helped with the delivery of the toys on Saturday, December 17. “The families don’t know what they are getting until they get their boxes delivered. Delivery day is a very emotional time when you see the reactions of the recipient. Without all of the individuals, businesses,

community organizations and donations this of money to put it on,” added Matechuk, who would not be possible because it costs a lot has been a volunteer for 11 years.
