Kicking Off Candy Cane Countdown
Wide-eyed and eager for Christmas, hundreds of people gathered in Vermilion on November 24, to take in the Christmas festivities. Spectators lined up along 50th Avenue to watch the twinkling Christmas lights in the annual Night Light Parade; a tradition in Vermilion for approximately 20 years. Christmas and cartoon characters highlighted the tops of this year’s floats, and Santa greeted families at the finale. “The Night Light Parade kicks off the Candy Cane Countdown to encourage shopping in Vermilion. I felt the parade was a huge success. Even though we had fewer floats this year, there was lots of excitement and a great turnout of spectators,” said Chamber Member, Marlene
Beattie. The Jr. B. Tigers once again hosted a hot dog fundraiser at the Atco building during the parade. Each year, the Jr. B. Hockey Team volunteers their time cooking and interacting with the public. “We would like to thank Leckie & Associates for the donation of hot dogs and hot chocolate, the parent volunteers that helped organize the event and ATCO for letting us use their building. We would like to send out a huge thank-you to the community for coming out to enjoy the parade & refreshments,” said Jr. B. Tigers’ Director of Advertising, Brenda Farkash. The Jr. B. Tigers sold approximately 300 hot dogs; with the proceeds going to support meals during their out of town games. “Children are always thrilled to have the
opportunity to talk with the Jr. B. Tigers and interact off the ice, as many of them look up to the team as role models,” said organizer Neil Zack. Upon completion of the parade route, families congregated to visit and shop at the Lakeland Mall. The Rotary Club offered hot chocolate and homemade cookies for donations to the Haying In The Thirties Cancer Support Group from November 24 - 26. Between the refreshments and their entry in the Festival of Trees, the Rotary Club had raised $10,000 over the last four years for the organization. Dragon Hare Studios offered photos with Santa at the Lakeland Mall from November 24 – 26. “We like seeing the children’s reaction to Santa,” said Brian Morritt who has been

Also at the Lakeland Mall were Lakeland College Animal Health Technology students, who hosted a hot dog sale with proceeds going toward the Lloydminster SPCA. The Chamber of Commerce hosted the Festival of Trees at the Lakeland Mall from November 24 - 26, with a silver donation going towards Santa’s Anonymous. Spectators had the opportunity to view the 15 trees entered by businesses and non-profit organizations as well as vote for their favorite, or bid to purchase the trees. “It’s nice to see so many people coming to the mall by combining the two events. I’d like to thank the community for their support,” said Chamber Office Manager, Paige Jaremco. See more on page 10.
