VES And J. R. Robson Celebrate Terry Fox

Reporter

On September 29, Vermilion Elementary School (VES) students took part in a Terry Fox Run, while J. R. Robson held theirs on September 30. In an attempt to put some perspective on the accomplishments that Terry Fox achieved, VES students spent a couple of weeks running approximately 5,000 laps of their track. They understood the cause and

were happy to help raise awareness. “The children all identified and had lots of fun participating,” said Brian Harvey. On September 30, J. R. Robson School hosted a full afternoon of activities along with their Terry Fox Walk. Students had donated approximately $300 in change towards the Terry Fox Foundation. Many students wore orange shirts as they took part in the Every Child Matters Safe and Caring Campaign.

After their kicking off of their Annual QSP Magazine Fundraiser, they had a presentation by African drummer Jacky Essombe. Full of excitement, children proceeded to dance outside as they began a 2 km walk taking the time to show their respect for who Terry Fox was. “For the last eight years, with a few staff and a student affected by cancer, this is the one charity that our school consistently

promotes. We’re pleased that our students took the time to celebrate a great Canadian and all that he stood for, as well as to donate to further cancer research,” said Nicole Polishuk. Some of the cross country students went on to host a training event at the Vermilion Provincial Park. They were hosting North East Alberta cross country running students to ready themselves for the upcoming finals.
