Excitement Soars On First Day Back At School Marie Conboy Reporter

The students of VES arrived back at school to the start of a new school year on September 6. Under a mix of sun, cloud and cool temperatures the atmosphere was filled with excitement and warmth as the children excitedly exited school buses and others were dropped off by their parents. Children were eager to meet up with their friends and fellow students they had studied with the previous years, while some started school for the first time. Sporting new and colourful clothes with a variety of backpacks and new lunch boxes it resembled the walk of a children’s runway show. “What an exciting morning! It’s my favourite time of the year,” said VES Principal Michelle Webb, as she greeted students outside the school and welcomed them back for another year. “Including our kindergarten numbers, there were 47 new students this year,” said Webb. “We are really excited about our goals for this year and we are looking at inquiry based learning, and we are continuing to build relationships with students and staff. Student connectedness is something we are very focused on.” Evan Ferguson was excited on his first day of Grade 1 at VES. Photo Marie Conboy More pictures on page 11.

New General Manager At Eastalta Co-op

Eastalta Co-op welcomed Graham Getz as their new General Manager on August 2. Originally from rural Saskatchewan, Getz appreciates the similarities of the Lakeland area. Raised on a grain farm, and with much business experience, Getz is able to connect with the Eastalta Co-op board, employees, members and community members. Getz spent several years working for Federated Co-op in Saskatoon, and managing the Watrous Co-op and Davidson Co-op. He spent the last few years as the General Manager of the St. Paul and District Co-op; and recently celebrated 20 years of service with Co-op. Getz lives with his wife Camille, son Kelton (13), and daughter Kayla (11) in St. Paul. He will spend two or three days per week at Eastalta locations and the Administration office in Vermilion. “With technology and computers, much can be done between the two Co-ops. levels of the 13 Eastalta Co-op locations, and seven St. Paul and District Co-op locations, it’s all about communication,” said Getz. Eastalta Co-op entered into a finance agreement with St. Paul and District Co-op on June 6, allowing for Getz to manage both areas, as well as share Finance Controller Brad Belton. The joint partnership since August 2015 allows for both Co-ops to share Health and Safety Coordinator Eric Kohlman as well. Getz went on to say that the mindset of both Co-op boards are fundamentally the same. They are both community focussed, and share many of the same values keeping employees and Co-op members in focus. “Ultimately, it’s all about the service. We are looking to continue to enhance the Co-op member experience and ensure that it remains consistent and efficient; allowing us to continue to compete in all of the grocery, gas, and building commodities that we offer,” said Getz.
