Canada Day In Vermilion

Angela Mouly Reporter

Swarms of people bustled through the streets, taking in all the festivities offered to celebrate Multiculturalism and Canada Day in the Town of Vermilion on June 30. Children’s activities were held from 11 a.m. – 5 p.m. in the Vermilion Credit Union parking lot. Alberta Health Children’s Rehabilitation Services provided several fine motor, gross motor and language development activities including Kerplunk, licorice necklaces, an obstacle course, hopscotch and chalk and bubbles. The Vermilion Masonic Lodge sold ice cream to raise funds for Brighter Beginnings and Summer Fun provided bouncy castles, paper crafts, and family draw prizes. A Beef on a Bun lunch was held between Craig’s and Long’s while Ribstone Creek Brewery was on site to provide a Beer Tasting. Always a highlight, the Bucket Brigade followed with the 2016 Champions being the Webb’s Team. Lakeland College provided the sound system for the Open Stage performances that took place at the Telus Park on Main Street. Rick Dees, who coordinated the Open Stage performances sang the original version of ‘Oh Canada’ accompanied by Bob Palinka on guitar at the Beef on A Bun lunch before heading over to the Open Stage. The lineup of stage performers included Bob Palinka, Rick Dees, Jim Votour and ‘Road Kill’ from Elk Point, Hannah Dupuis, Makenna Gallagher, and Jordan and Elaina John. Music included Canadiana, country, and both traditional and contemporary songs. Lakeland Mall was also host to several events. Inside, an Art Show was held with several local vendors showing a mix of handmade products and artwork. Artisans showed and sold their images, paintings, stepping stones, knives, soaps, and body products. Outside, several activities took place including firefighters volunteering to help children experience operating a fire hose. The Rotary Interact Youth Club hosted both a Build Your Own Ice Cream Sundae stand with the toppings sponsored by Shoppers Drug Mart, and a Fort Building Contest that included 10 teams and 50 participants. ‘Team Cardboard’ whose fort included a car, carport, a cat named Kevin and several rooms won the contest which was judged by Justin Thompson. “The wind and working together were both challenges, but the fact that there are no rules made it fun!” said Florence Pasay of the Fort Building Contest. Mainstreet Hardware provided a dunk tank, pie toss, and big ring toss with proceeds going to the Vermilion Girl Guides. Lynnal Miller was the lucky winner of the
