Excellent Steers Round The Ring

Angela Mouly Reporter

Members of the Vermilion and Clandonald 4-H Clubs gathered at the Vermilion Fairgrounds on May 30 for the Interclub Steer Show and Sale. Miles Wowk from Beauvallen was invited to be the Master of Ceremonies and to Auctioneer the event, while Jessie and Dwayne Emery from Barrhead were invited to Judge the event. Members from both clubs entered the ring in groups of 3 and 5, with Clandonald winning with a more uniform group of 3 steers, and Vermilion winning the group of 5. Members then showed their steers in 4 weight classes. Logan Garnier and Rylan Lehmann had the top 2 steers in the 1st weight class, and Cavin Jones and Grace Leland had the top 2 steers in the 2nd weight class. Emma Cleland and Wyatt Jacula had the top 2 steers in the 3rd weight class, and Ashley Jones and Justin Chase had the top 2 steers in the 4th weight class. Steers were then shown in 3 showmanship categories where Judges had to take their time deliberating. Competitors were even made to swap steers to lead around the ring in order to show how the animals would respond under different leadership. Charlotte Wasylik was awarded 1st place in Senior Showmanship, with Brie Watson in 2nd place. Paul Dahoy was awarded 1st in Intermediate Showmanship, with Kamryn Oddan in 2nd place. Wyatt Jacula received 1st in Junior Showmanship, and Robyn Axley received 2nd place. Both Vermilion and Clandonald 4-H Beef Clubs tied for their Barn Display entries. “We select our steers at the end of October, and perform regular chores until spring, when we help the younger members at the Mock Achievement Day,” said Senior Member, Justin Chase from Vermilion. “It was nice to see the senior members supporting the junior members with grooming and leading through the show and sale,” said Vermilion Leader Derek Jones. “I love public speaking and the camps because the people you meet in 4-H are lifelong friends. 4-H teaches us a lot of valuable lessons; like our motto, ‘Learn to do by doing,’” said Senior Member, Emerson Livingstone from Vermilion. “I enjoy working with all the animals and fitting and clipping them which I was shown by my dad and uncle. I like 4-H in general because I have gone to summer camps, and in the 1st day judging class I broadened my judging skills, which has taken me to the provincial level 2 years in a row. I will be saving to buy more cattle and get a beginner farmer’s loan so that I can go on to farm,” said Senior Member, Nicholas BBQ b y Habit at For Huma nity

Wasylik. The Grand Champion Steer was awarded to Ashley Jones, from Vermilion. Jones was presented the award by Sponsor, Phil Tovell, from Crop Protection Services. The Reserve Champion Steer was awarded to Wyatt Jacula from Clandonald. Jacula was presented the award by Sponsor, Jason Clampitt, from Vermilion Insurance. The 4-H Sale began with auctioning Ashley Jones’ Grand Champion steer. The other members followed showing their prime Alberta beef specimen to prospective buyers with an

average price of $2.67/lb. “The children had excellent steers, and it was nice to see how they all worked together to make the whole day happen,” said Vermilion Leader Derek Jones. Webb’s of Vermilion provided a pancake breakfast for the participating clubs, and Cargill sponsored a lunch held in the Butler Building for 4-H members. A large crowd gathered at the Vermilion Golf Course for the 49th Annual beef dinner provided by the Stewart family for the perspective buyers, 4-H leaders, parents and families of the members.
