Donations Flow In For Fort McMurray Lorna Hamilton Reporter

As the wildfire began to ravage its way into the City of Fort McMurray on Tuesday, May 3 more than 80,000 residents had to flee their community and homes, most with nothing more than the clothes on their back. Vermilionite Justin Reid, leapt into action Wednesday morning posting on Facebook that he was organizing a donation drop off area at the Lakeland Mall parking lot for the evacuees of Fort McMurray, until Sunday, May 8. He was met with some Facebook responses telling him the Red Cross didn’t want people collecting, but that didn’t deter him. “I was not collecting to ship it to the Red Cross; I knew they didn’t have the manpower to sort through and distribute vast amounts of items. My plan was to do exactly what I did; collect items and bring them to areas and centres that were in need of help,” said Reid. Reid stated that when he saw that Fort McMurray was getting evacuated, he knew there was going to be a high demand and need for supplies, especially in centres and shelters all over Alberta where evacuees would have to go. “It doesn’t matter what the circumstances are; it could be just one person who needs help or assistance or in this case a whole city and its residents that have been devastated by this fire. It was the right thing to do period,” Reid said. What started out as a thought, quickly grew into a community event. Businesses such as Shawn Jacula from RE/MAX and Kirby Whitlock from Christina’s Home Furnishings donated the use of their trailers to store and transport supplies. Tim Hortons owner Greg Whitney volunteered his time and supplied coffee; A&W provided condiments; Len’s Party Bus brought out his bus to play music, so people were entertained while at the site, and the Vermilion Rotary Club collected the cash donations so people could obtain a tax receipt at a later date. Many businesses in the area also donated cash to help the residents of Fort McMurray, along with a BBQ that was held to help raise funds. “The response has been phenomenal, the residents of Vermilion and Area even in these tough economic times have opened their hearts and wallets for the people of Fort McMurray. I honestly can’t believe the response we have had. People came and asked us what we were in need of, and they went and got it, no questions asked! If we said, places needed blankets they went and got blankets either from their homes or

bought them; If we said we needed water they went and got water; if we said we needed baby items then they came back with baby items. They have donated cash and gift cards. The people of Vermilion are awesome, and I am proud to call Vermilion home. That is all I can say.” said Reid. Each evening after a day of collecting Reid or other volunteers like Rob Horton, Dez Johnston, and Justin Payne left Vermilion to deliver the supplies to different centres in Alberta who were in need of supplies and housing evacuees. The trailer loads of supplies have went to The Fraser Community Hall in Edmonton, The Boyle Community Centre and The Bold Centre in Lac La Biche. “The volunteers in each of the centres we distributed to were amazing; they had people waiting there to help us unload and the appreciation they expressed would bring tears in your eyes. It’s heart aching to see the hardships the people of Fort McMurray will have to face over the next while, but the people of Alberta are in full force to help and even now that our collection area is complete, I will continue to help anyone I can,” said Reid. Reid would also like to extend his deepest appreciation to Rob Horton, Sergio Raposo, and Kirby Whitlock, who volunteered from start to finish and to everyone who came out and donated and volunteered their time as there are far too many to list. He would like to send out a special thank you to his parents. “Growing up in a small town in Nova Scotia my parents would make me get involved with grocery drives for the fire hall, as my dad was a fire chief and on the town council, they would also make me do things for their bingos. Back then I thought it was stupid, but look how it turned out today, if it weren’t for them I would never have been able to organize this because I wouldn’t know how to. I

owe it all to them, said Reid. At print time there was over $12,400 in cash donations and approximately $40,000 worth of supplies transported to various centres in Alberta. If you are interested in donating there are several ways: It is now possible to donate to the For t McMurray Fire Relief Fund through ATB Cares. ATB Cares matches contributions with an additional 15% at http://atbcares.com/bcart/add/cause/12488988602RR0001. Also, the Rotary District 5370 Charitable Foundation has established the “Fort McMurray Fire Relief Fund” to assist in rebuilding of the city following this tragic fire. The Charitable Foundation is now ready to accept donations for which tax receipts will be issued. The Foundation will rely on an independent committee of Fort McMurray stakeholders (including the Rotary club and the municipality) for advice on disbursal of the funds. Donations may be from individuals or corporations. You can forward a cheque to Rotary District 5370 Charitable Foundation c/o Rotary District 5370 Office, 16030 - 104 Ave. NW, Edmonton AB T5P 0S3 and annotate cheques “Fort McMurray Fire Relief Fund.” If you wish to make a donation using Visa, MasterCard or American Express, you may do so by using the Canada Helps website and the Charitable Foundation’s link at: http:// www.canadahelps.org/en/charities/rotarydistrict-5370-charitable-foundation/ in the comments section; please indicate that the donation is for the Fort McMurray Fire Relief Fund. Donations can also be made to the Red Cross. You can also check with local businesses in the area as some are also holding fundraising efforts. See more pictures on page 3.....
