The Alumni Hall at Lakeland College burst at the seams on Saturday, March 12 with three hundred and ninety-four seats sold. As promised, Celtic Fusion Illusion with the Celtic Ceilidh dancers took Vermilion by storm. CFI, a ten-member celtic rock band pitched the wailing voices of the bagpipes against electric guitars, keyboards and drums, producing a unique fusion of sound at once vivid and exciting yet deeply haunting— enough to set one’s Celtic blood a-boiling. Vocalists Sarah Kuntsen and Mark Lepine belted out pure energy with “Voices” by Sting, as well as Bruce Springsteen’s “Death to my Home Town”, and an original piece titled “The Deep” which CFI recorded and dedicated to those who have served their country. Then the stage filled with the beauty, precision, glitter and hair of the Celtic Ceilidh dancers—the fluid movements and colourful swaying kilts of the traditional highland dancers in striking contrast with the rapid leg movements, rigid upper body and dark costumes of the Irish hardshoe step dancers. It was magical. “Walk the Tweed” from Celtic Fusion’s 2013 CD, as well as “Copperhead Road”, and the “Sword Dance”, kept the audience clapping and tapping. The timeless voice of the bagpipes pierced our souls with “MacCrimmon’s Lament”, a song of deep sorrow for for he who went away and will never return. After the intermission, CFI cranked it up with

“Whisky in a Jar” and the dancers received a heartfelt applause from a loving crowd. Before the performance, the Wine and Cheese party took a life of its own with the Ratté family members—Cameron, Emma and Beth on violins, and Chantal on cello. The young musicians played classical and popular works with their customary skill and personal charm, showing us once again that music frames us and tells us who we are.
