Two Ministers Walk Into A Room What do you get when the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development and the Minister of Tourism and Recreation walk into a room? Well, if you’re the County of Vermilion River you get a $213,750 grant for the Final Mile Rural Community Program to improve Internet service in the area. That’s a heck of a punch line. T h i s p ro g ra m i s i n p a r tn e r s h i p with Service Alberta. The goal is to ensure at least 98 percent of Albertans have Internet access. “If you’re not connected you’re at a disadvantage. We want people in rural Alberta to h ave th e s a m e a d va n t a g e s a s people in urban areas,” said Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Verlyn Olson. H e p ointed out that this access can even assist schoolchildren when doing their homework, or keep families connected if a family member moves away. The Minister of Tourism and Recreation, Richard Starke, reiterated the
impor tance of Internet access for Albertans when he said, “The ability to have internet access that is strong, that is reliable and that is fast is incredibly impor tant to the competitiveness of our province.” T h e C o u n t y o f Ve r m i l i o n R i ve r applied for the grant and it is one of 23 projects that the government will spend $5 million on in order to e x p a n d I n te r n e t s e r v i c e s a c r o s s the province. The grant covers up to 75% of the cost of infrastructure expenses such as building towers, which is what the County of Vermilion River will be spending the money on.
