Vermilion Is One Of The Luckiest Towns In Alberta

Reporter

Alberta’s physician shortage has been a longstanding concern, with over 650,000 residents across the province lacking access to regular healthcare providers. Vermilion, too, has faced its share of challenges, including 2 periodic closures of its emergency department due to staffing shortages. The Vermilion Health Care Centre’s emergency department has often been strained by nonemergency cases, leading to long wait times and overburdened doctors.

However, the tide has finally turned, marking a new chapter for the town. Thanks to a dedicated recruitment effort, Vermilion has welcomed not one, not two, but three new family physicians, with one more coming in 2025.

Area Manager of the Vermilion Health Centre, Darlene McQuid, proudly stated that, “We have recruited four new doctors—three who are already here and a fourth arriving soon. We are extremely lucky to have these physicians join our community. They will provide comprehensive medical care for people of all ages, from preventative health to palliative care.”

McQuid emphasized the vital role of family physicians, who offer both acute and chronic care while fostering long-term relationships

with their patients. They are trained to work across all care settings, including primary care clinics, emergency rooms, hospitals, and long-term care facilities.

Residents of Vermilion and its surrounding communities have long called for a resolution to the physician shortage, and their cries have not gone unheard. The Health Care Providers Attraction & Retention Committee has played a pivotal role in bringing these much-needed medical professionals to town.

“We worked very hard to recruit these new doctors,” said Kirby Whitlock, a member of the committee. “Vermilion no longer faces a shortage of family physicians, and they are taking on new patients. By bringing in these doctors, we aim to reduce visits to the emergency department for minor issues.”

Whitlock encouraged community members to take full advantage of the new physicians to ensure their practice thrives and that they remain in Vermilion. “Our doctors are excited to build their practices and connect with the community. You don’t have to live in Vermilion to have a family doctor here.”

The waitlist to see a doctor in Vermilion has significantly improved, with some patients able to secure same-day appointments at Midtown Medical Clinic.

Each of the new physicians brings a wealth of experience and a personal connection to rural life:

Dr. Akrm Krimeed: graduated in 2010 with his MB BCh and practices family and emergency medicine covering the 24 hour emergency department, acute and longterm care, and the clinic. He is accepting new patients.

Dr. Omar Abugharsa: graduated in 2008 with his MB BCh and practices family and emergency medicine covering the 24 hour emergency department, acute and longterm care, and the clinic. He is accepting new patients.

Dr. Ashraf Al Oud: graduated in 2008 with his MB BCh and practices family and emergency medicine covering the 24 hour emergency department, acute and longterm care, and the clinic. He is accepting new patients.

Dr. Maulud: graduated in 1993 with her MB BCh and is the owner of My Medical Clinic for many years. She practices family and emergency medicine covering the 24 hour emergency department, acute and long-term care, and the clinic. She is accepting new patients. She is eager to welcome new patients she can provide long-term care for in the community and area.

Dr. Louw: who graduated in 1977 with his MB ChB and practices family and emergency medicine covering the 24 hour emergency department, acute and long-term care, and the clinic and is accepting new patients. as well as Dr. Khan who graduated in 1982 with a MBBS and brought with her years of family and emergency medicine experience, covering the 24 hour emergency department, acute and long-term care, and clinic.

It is also important to note that all doctors practicing in Vermilion are also available every day until 10 p.m. for in-patient and long-term care by phone.

The recruitment of these physicians signals a brighter future for Vermilion, addressing a critical need and strengthening the foundation of the local healthcare system. With passionate doctors ready to serve, residents can look forward to better access to care and improved health outcomes. To schedule an appointment with Dr. Maulud call My Medical Clinc at 780-853-6655. To schedule an appointment with either Dr. Krimeed, Dr. Abugharsa, Dr. Oud, Dr. Louw or Dr. Khan please call, Midtown Medical Clinic at 780-853-2809.

Indeed, Vermilion is one of the luckiest rural towns in Alberta with currently six family physicians that are accepting new patients and another one possibly two on the way.

Alberta Sends Wildfire Support To California

According to Cal Fire, California is currently grappling with a series of devastating wildfires, with Los Angeles County among the hardest-hit areas. As of January 13, the Palisades Fire has consumed over 23,654 acres and remains only 14 per cent contained. The Eaton Fire has also ravaged approximately 14,117 acres, with a containment level of 33 per cent. These catastrophic fires have destroyed more than 12,300 homes and buildings and have tragically claimed lives.

In response, Alberta is sending much-needed support to assist California’s firefighting efforts. This comes as an act of reciprocity after 115 California firefighters and support staff aided Alberta during its own record-

breaking wildfire season in 2023.

Now, Alberta’s wildland firefighters are heading south to provide assistance as California battles deadly blazes driven by dry conditions and powerful winds.

As stated in an Alberta Alberta Wildfire, following a request from the Canadian Interagency Forest Fire Centre, has deployed two fully equipped wildfire crews. The contingent includes 40 skilled wildland firefighters and two agency representatives. They departed from Edmonton on Monday, January 13, and are expected to arrive in California within days.

Premier Danielle Smith emphasized Alberta’s commitment to international cooperation during crises.

“Our hearts go out to everyone in California who has been impacted due to these devastating fires. Good neigh -

bours are always there for each other in times of need, and we will assist our American friends in any way they need during this crisis. We are sending 40 highly skilled and experienced wildland firefighters to assist in the response efforts. Alberta remains committed to providing support and expertise to help protect lives, property, and communities,” she said.

Minister of Forestry and Parks Todd Loewen also highlighted the strong partnership between Alberta and California. “In 2023, California firefighters bravely supported Alberta in a time of great need. Now, Alberta is answering the call and stepping up to assist our neighbours. I have spoken directly to Cal Fire and to the Governor’s Office of Emergency Services to assure them that Alberta is prepared to

support them in their ongoing efforts. Alberta has experience and expertise in battling wildfires, and we’re committed to supporting our friends and partners in the United States.”

California’s wildfire management agency will oversee the deployment of Alberta crews and determine their areas of operation. In addition, Alberta Wildfire has prepared further resources, including Type 1 firefighters, Incident Command personnel, water bombers, pilots, and contracted night vision helicopters, which can be dispatched if requested.

As Alberta’s firefighters join their counterparts in California, the bond of mutual assistance continues to strengthen, showcasing the importance of solidarity and cooperation in the face of natural disasters.

including it will give you an abundant amount of Vitamin B12, B6, B3, A, E, iodine, zinc, and omega 3. The iodine contributes to a healthy thyroid and the zinc helps to regulate leptin, and both nutrients aid in healthy weight regulation. Shrimp is a good source of important antioxidants selenium and astaxanthin as well as anti-inflammatory sterols. Selenium is an important mineral, and studies have shown that people with a higher intake of selenium, have a lower rate of cancer. The body requires a delicate balance of selenium and zinc, and both of these nutrients are provided in shrimp. The combination of zinc, astaxanthin, and omega 3 found in shrimp

contributes to the anti-aging of skin and hair. There are very few foods that contain Vitamin D, however shrimp does. This makes shrimp an important food choice for Canadians from December to March when vitamin D levels dip. No wonder shrimp is so popular for winter holiday entertaining. For this recipe, I used precooked and frozen large shrimp in a bag. About 10 Large shrimp will make 1 cup of chopped shrimp.

Baked Shrimp Dip

1/2 brick cream cheese, 125 grams 1/2 cup sour cream 1/2 cup mayonnaise

1 cup of precooked shrimp, chopped 3/8 teaspoon salt

1 tablespoon dehydrated onion

1 tablespoon finely chopped red pepper

1 teaspoon finely grated lemon peel

1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice

Remove the tails of the shrimp by just pulling them off. If there are any black sand veins, remove them as well. Combine all the ingredients except the shrimp. If you are using canned shrimp, drain the shrimp and pat dry with a paper towel, to prevent the liquid around the shrimp from making the dip too liquidly. Stir in the shrimp. Bake at 350 degrees until hot through about 25 – 35 minutes depending on if the shrimp were still a bit frozen.

A Luncheon For Vermilions

Hockey Players in Edmonton

men of Edmonton decided to hold a special luncheon for the Vermilion Farm School Hockey Team.

The entire hockey team was treated to an informal luncheon from the businessmen of the city. The main person

behind the idea was a man by the name of M. Esdale. Others present at the lunch included Mayor Henry, Dean Howes of the University of Alberta, H.A. Craig, the deputy minister of Agriculture, Dr. Talbot and several members of the Rotary Club and the Vermilion Agricultural school staff.

The event was held at the beautiful Hotel Macdonald in the city.

Esdale said at the luncheon that the purpose was to extend a welcome to the boys from Vermilion and was made possible by the fact that several businessmen wanted to show their interest in the work of the school of agriculture. There was also a hope to recognize the friendly spirit which prompted the boy’s visit to the community.

Mayor Henry also spoke, extending his welcome to the visitors and mentioning the introduction of hockey to the Edmon-

ton area a quarter-century previous when the games were played on the river, rather than in a rink. Several other gentlemen spoke briefly as well.

That night, the boys were then the guests of the University hockey team at a large banquet at the Selkirk Hotel. After the banquet, they enjoyed speeches and music and then had a theatre party at the Empire Theatre where the play, Second in Command, was performed.

All in all, it was a very good visit for the young hockey team to Alberta’s capital, where they were made to feel very important.

One thing we have in our small part of the world is a very distinct four seasons. Over the last couple months, we watched our landscape change from green to brown to white with the temperature dropping sometimes daily, and now we have just passed the winter solstice, the shortest daylight hours of the year. Because of the lowest angle of the sun on December 21st at noon, the sun will cast the longest shadow of the year. Our precipitation has changed to snow (with the odd exception) but for the

most part, snow! We are dressing in layers and it takes a while to get ready to go outside. We are complimented by people from other provinces who are envious of our beautiful Alberta clear blue sky winter days, even with cold temperatures. Make no mistake, Old Man Winter has his own agenda and cannot be influenced by anything we say or do. He doesn’t care if we’re not prepared. He limits our daylight hours. He blows in from the north and changes the skies to icy cold clouds that cover the panoramic blue as quickly as the dropping of the curtain at a theatre production. The chilly wind is his opening act. It whistles past our ears and numbs our fingers and toes right through warm gloves and

insulated boots. He stretches out his arm and ice forms across the bodies of water and the rivers trying to run away are blocked with ice until only a trickle is seen trying to escape. On his command the snow starts coming down from the great north arsenal. It appears like curved white missiles with the intensity to cover the ground in short order. Then it stops. Now the landscape is pristine, completely covered in a white blanket of sparkly snow. It tantalizes our senses. We can’t take our eyes off it. A pure white landscape with no tracks! Are you kidding? When we were kids the first thing we thought of was playing fox and goose. Wait! What is that a video game? No it is not! That’s an Alberta “fresh air and sunshine” game to get

the blood pumping and cheeks pink! Get out there kids!

Old Man Winter sends Jack Frost his icy cold temperatures. Jack Frost begins painting his beautiful pictures. He breathes on the trees, the buildings, even the tall grass that’s sticking out of the snow and forms the most exquisite frosty detail. Everything is thick with stunning white ice. (albeit not healthy for our power lines) Single paned glass windows have detailed design all over them from his icy white paintbrush. We can only imagine that the frosty swirls look like flowers, trees, snowflakes or maybe it’s his signature! Like magic, his masterpieces disappear with the first breeze. Yes, it’s winter! We count down the days until spring!
