Now Trending Men Who Wear a Face Mask Are Sexier, According to U.S. Women Sexual Wellness Brand Royal Reveals New Perk of Mask Wearing

88 percent of adult women in the U.S. find men who wear a face mask in public during the COVID-19 pandemic sexier than those who do not. Perhaps more notable – this sentiment holds true, even for women who are currently in a relationship with a non-mask wearer.

Want to attract more women? Wear a face mask. A recent survey conducted by sexual wellness brand Royal revealed that 88 percent of adult women in the U.S. find men who wear a face mask in public during the COVID-19 outbreak sexier than those who do not.

“Largely because of societal conditioning, some men view masks as a sign of weakness,” said Neil Mehta, M.P.H., CEO

and founder of Royal. “When you see how the majority of women perceive men in masks, however, it should be a game-changer for lots of guys, especially those who want to stay sexy in the eyes of their partner.”

Will masks be making their way into the bedroom, too?

Public health and sex experts recommend face coverings as a new guideline for partnered sex, and – according to the 500-person survey – this sentiment may be catching on among women, too. While only six percent of U.S. women have had sex with a face mask on during the COVID-19 pandemic, approximately 25 percent are open to the idea.

“Health and hygiene are supremely important to women as it pertains to their romantic relationships,” added Mehta. “Just one year ago, no one was thinking about having sex with masks on, and now, a shocking one in four women are either neutral about or likely to do it.”

How a converted closet became a performance space amidst the pandemic.

Theater in Quarantine, a project by Joshua William Gelb, utilizes a converted closet to explore the boundaries of theater while embracing social distancing and remoteness It’s March. Word of the coronavirus is spreading, and people are starting to take warnings seriously. Businesses begin to shut down. Broadway shuts down.

Thousands of people are instantly out of work, wondering how long this will last and what they should do. Actors, directors, choreographers, stagehands, and more are no longer able to contribute to their shows. Performances are being canceled or rescheduled. People are told to stay home, stay inside.

What is a creative person to do amidst such a time?

New York-based director, performer, and librettist Joshua William Gelb had an idea. He began to ask the question, “How can theater practitioners artfully push against these new boundaries of social distance to embrace the limitations of remoteness?”

“I have the immense luxury of having a New York closet,” he says. “All of the stuff went under my bed when I realized that the aspect ratio of my closet was similar to my iPhone. All the theaters were closed, no work was being done, and I had nothing to do. That’s how it started.”

Theater in Quarantine was born.

Gelb turned a 4x8x2-foot closet into a white-box. And this tiny spot became his new performance space.

“I was excited by the fact that we were trapped in boxes, and there was some excitement about literalizing that,” he says.

Gelb chose white because he wanted a space where the full body could be emphasized. He says there’s a lot of forgiveness as long as it gets enough light, whereas black box depends on the lighting of the performers more.

Theater in Quarantine streams live performances on YouTube every other Thursday at 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. CST. Following each performance is a chance to talk to Gelb about the challenges of creating the piece.

Gelb describes the subject matter for each performance as “quarantine adjacent.”

“We try to respond to the crisis, but we try to do it through adjacent ideas about isolation, loneliness, and about what it feels to be trapped in moments of crises,” he says.

Gelb collaborates with others to make each performance a reality. However, working in isolation poses some challenges not traditionally encountered.

Katie Rose McLaughlin, a New York-based choreographer originally from Minneapolis, works with Gelb to create movement sequences for the performances. But with stay-at-home orders in place, this instruction has to happen virtually, adding another dynamic to the task.

“It’s all through Zoom,” she says. “The only thing that’s really affected is that I can’t

help Josh physically. I can’t jump up and say, ‘I’ll hold that for you.’”

Gelb utilizes several apps to program specific aspects of each performance.

“Once you take Zoom out of the equation, you realize how much the other apps are doing for you. You realize your Macbook just isn’t enough,” he says.

Being able to physically rely on only himself poses some challenges and can slow things down.

“There’s only one Josh, and Josh can only be in one place at one time, so there’s no multitasking,” says McLaughlin. “If something comes up in the space, he has to do it himself, which is really time-consuming.”

Despite the challenges posed by creating a theater out of a closet, Gelb and his collaborators have successfully entertained audiences with several performances, including “The 7th Voyage of Egon Tichy,” a space adventure inspired by Stanislaw Lem’s Star Diaries; “Closet Works,” an installment of short dance performances; and “Hypochondriac!” an adaptation of Moliere’s The Imaginary Invalid.

Creatively pushing the limits of technology in isolation and the boundaries of small-space performances, Theater in Quarantine is more than a series of shows. The dynamic use of movement, sound, and imagery will have you questioning the confines of traditional theater and leave you impressed with how these talented folks continue to create amidst the unpredictable climate of the pandemic. - Angela McLaughlin

The book dives into the world of death, loss, and methods for healing.

Living With Grace

T

he emotions surrounding loss are complicated and, at times, indescribable. Often, there is an external pressure for those going through the grief process to follow a specific timeline or handle loss in a particular way.

Marita Rahlenbeck’s book “Living with Grace” takes readers on a journey through grief, finding grace, and the healing process

In 2019, Marita Rahlenbeck released “Living with Grace.” The book dives into the world of death, loss, and methods for healing.

Her journey began with the loss of her cat, Grace, when she felt compelled to write their story. From adopting Grace, to losing her and finding a connection and peace following her death, Rahlenbeck’s tale is a complex journey that navigates the inner emotions surrounding grief.

“It’s a story with so many different levels to it. It’s a story about a cat, but it’s also a book about death and honoring the death process,” she says.

“Living with Grace” tackles complex emotions around loss and grief

Rahlenbeck says she didn’t set out to write a book – it began as a process to deal with grief by connecting her to her Grace. Partnering with an animal communicator allowed her to understand the situation in a more distinct way.

What started as purely a personal endeavor, turned into something more.

Rahlenbeck has found that in sharing her process of finding grace (and finding Grace) in the course of grieving, she has been able to help others who may also be experiencing a similar loss.

“Whether you do the exercise or not, you can’t unread the question,” she says, adding that the questions have a greater impact because readers will often consider them in the backs of their minds as they continue reading.

As a follow-up to her story, Rahlenbeck has offered her readers the option to sign up for free “Grace Notes,” which are one-sentence emails sent out regularly.

Though written about the loss of a pet, Rahlenbeck’s book transcends any boundaries, creating a meaningful tool for those experiencing different types of loss, from the loss of a loved one to the loss of a job or relationship.

“We are so bereft when something or someone dies,” she says. “Everything and everyone that is in our lives bleeds into our story. We have to have the grief so that we can find the joy.”

Throughout the book are “Your Turn” sections that shift the focus onto the reader. Thought-provoking questions with blank space to write answers help those who wish to participate find a deeper meaning in her words.

Environmental Collapse Leads Drive into Eliminating Fast Fashion

Eliminating Fast Fashion How stores are now finding creative ways to reduce their environmental waste.

Have you ever wondered how your favorite clothing brand created your flowy summer, mini dress for as little as $10? Odds are, your clothing is fast fashion.

Sounds nice right? Clothes for cheap, since me up!

However, there are many consequences for this type of production and pricing. Many apparel stores are now finding out ways to change their quality and eliminate this type of production.

If you were asked what your go-to shopping outlets are, odds are at least one of the stores you mention is going to be from a fast fashion retailer. These familiar fashion retailers include ASOS, Forever 21, H&M, Urban Outfitters, Zara, etc. All of these outlets share a commonality- stylish, inexpensive clothing that is easily attainable, which suits our modern world where individuals are constantly living on the go.

Considering how often an individual buys clothing within a year, statistics show Generation X spends the most, typically $2,300 per year. While these individuals spend thousands of dollars on newer apparel, approximately 80 pounds of used clothing are thrown away annually. That is nearly 160 pairs of jeans, or 250 t-shirts thrown into textile landfills per person every year.

Clothing prices have dropped dramatically throughout the decades, allowing consumers to purchase more clothes, which ultimately affects the planet and the factory workers producing the garments.

However, as more and more individuals and companies become aware of the consequences of fast fashion, they discover new ways to create a positive change. One trend that has started for many young adults during quarantine is upcycling old clothing. A common theme is changing an old, baggy polo shirt into a two-piece matching set. Need an idea? Maybe the pair of distressed jeans sitting at the bottom of your drawer could use a little TLC and be cut into a pair of mom shorts for this humid summer; the possibilities are endless.

Some key factors to look into are purchasing clothing made of natural or organic fibers, where chemicals are not needed to produce the material. Some fibers that can be avoided are synthetic, such as polyester, that cannot decompose for hundreds of years. Please take a look in the morning when you get ready for your day, you would be surprised how many garments contain these fibers in them.

Although it may be challenging to focus on the clothing material when wanting to shop at your favorite stores, it is also essential to recognize the stores that are beginning to make a change toward more sustainable options. These stores include Nordstrom, Tentree, Everlane, Patagonia, H&M Conscious collection, and many more. Companies are taking a stride to help the planet by planting trees for every item purchased, upcycling worn clothing, sharing with customers where their products are coming from, etc. Next time you plan a shopping spree, take a look at the garments your purchase and be cautious about where it is coming from. - Hannah Harms

The Secret to Living a Long, Healthy, and Beautiful Life

By Lauren Beaubaire The secret to longevity and living an abundant, full life lies on the island of Okinawa. Here’s how the Okinawan concept of “moai” will transform how you live your life.

For many of us, the constant pursuit for longevity and the fountain of youth tends to end with piles of moisturizers, creams, and a hoard of unused exercise equipment shoved into a corner. (I still remember an old exercise bike in our basement made for a great place to hang our wet laundry.) However, you may be overlooking one key ingredient that leads to a longer, livelier, and healthier life — your social connections.

Creating a close, trusted circle of friends, or finding the right tribe, is one of the core practices found in Blue Zones, regions around the world where people live the longest and healthiest.

A quick background: Dan Buettner, National Geographic Fellow, author, and Blue Zones founder, expanded on the demographic work done by Gianni Pes and Michel Poulain who noted Sardinia, Italy was home to the world’s highest concentration of men living into their hundreds. Buettner went on to identify four other longevity hotspots where people were living happy and healthy lives well into their hundreds.

The Blue Zones are Sardinia, Italy, Ikaria, Greece, Nicoya Peninsula, Costa Rica, Loma Linda, California, and Okinawa, Japan.

A common thread found throughout each Blue Zone is a strong social connection with a small group of people.

And Okinawans especially seem to have mastered this longevity practice.

Okinawans have the concept of “moai” (pronounced mo-eye), a lifelong group of friends or social support group who supports your social, financial, health, and spiritual wellbeing. Sounds pretty nice, right?

The initial Okinawan notion of moai stems from the practice of pooling money into a communal fund to support each other financially for life events and emergencies. The idea has since expanded where moai groups meet daily, weekly, or monthly to chat, gossip, share advice, eat a meal, exercise, and to simply experience life together.

On average, Okinawan women live eight years longer than American women.

The typical life expectancy for Okinawan women is around ninety whereas American women, on average, live to see around seventy-eight years. And Okinawan women aren’t slumped over, shuffling around the house, but are active — gardening, cooking, going for walks, and of course, hanging out with their moais. So not only will your moai help you live longer, but the life you live will be more vibrant and more fulfilling.

For Okinawans, traditionally parents put their children into moais when they’re born, giving the kids a built-in support system before they can even walk or talk. For the rest of us not automatically bonded with others at birth, creating a moai can take work.

To create your moai, seek out others with shared interests and values. You might be familiar with the idea that you turn into the people you hang out with most. The Framingham Study, a long-term health research project, shows that smoking, obesity, happiness, and loneliness are contagious.

If loneliness and obesity can be contagious, you want to ensure you’re hanging around people who are happy and healthy. So if you want to start eating better, you may not want to hang around people who make daily late-night runs to Taco Bell. I’m not suggesting you ditch your current friends entirely, but maybe spend more time with the friends who always make you happy and embody the habits you value.

As Dan Buettner says on his site, “Your group of friends are better than any drug or anti-aging supplement, and will do more for you than just about anything.”

5 Fall Recipes Chilly weather and baking were made for each other. That’s why these sweet and savory baked apple dishes are just what you need for those crisp fall mornings. Serve them up solo, or with a bowl of hot soup.

So you picked a bunch of apples, and you’re not quite sure what to do with them. Well, look no further. These baked apple recipes are the perfect way to put your freshly picked produce to good use. Whether you’re eager to bake up a sweet treat, or you want to incorporate your apples into a savory dish for supper, there are so many ways to bake with this versatile fruit.

1. Stuffed Apples This one is super simple and perfect for a cold winter morning.

Start by coring two of your picked apples. Then, combine ½ cup of oats, 2 tablespoons of brown sugar, a dash of cinnamon, and two tablespoons of roughly chopped butter. Add in your favorite chopped nuts for a little crunch!

Divide the mixture between the two apples, and bake on a pan for thirty minutes at 350 degrees.

Breakfast is served!

That Call for Apples 2. Sweet Apple Chips These three-ingredient cinnamon apple chips are the perfect snack. First, thinly slice three or four apples. The thinner, the better! Place them on a non-stick baking sheet in one layer, and sprinkle the apples with cinnamon and sugar. Bake them at 200 degrees for one hour, then flip them and bake for another hour or so. Turn off the oven. Let them cool in the oven for one more hour. The result? Sweet and crunchy apple chips! Nobody said chips HAD to be made of veggies.

3. Apple Donuts These healthy donuts are whole-wheat, and sweetened with just maple syrup! Be sure to use a donut pan for the best results. Begin by combining ¾ cup of whole-wheat flour; four tablespoons of maple syrup; and a dash each of salt, nutmeg, and cinnamon. Mix in two tablespoons of melted butter. In a separate bowl, mix a ½ cup of diced apples, ¼ cup of your choice of milk (I use almond milk), and one small, beaten egg.

Add to the flour mixture and stir until they’re combined. Spoon the batter into a non-stick donut pan, and bake for ten minutes.

This recipe will make six donuts. Transfer the donuts to a wire rack to cool. Serve these baked treats with a sprinkle of cinnamon and sugar, or a drizzle of homemade icing!

4. Sausage and Apple Quiche For this fall-inspired apple recipe, feel free to use storebought or homemade pie crust! First, bake the crust according to the instructions. Let cool. Then, sauté a ½ cup of chopped onions in a drizzle of olive oil. Toss the onions with two cups of diced apples and a ½ cup of shredded cheddar cheese. Cut your choice of sausage (I like turkey sausage) into small slices, and add it to the mixture. Spoon the mixture into the pie crust. In a bowl, beat together two eggs, one cup of cream or your choice of milk, a dash of sage, and a sprinkle of nutmeg. Pour this over the top of the apple mixture, and bake for 45 minutes until the quiche is firm. This recipe makes four hearty servings or eight mini slices!

5. Apple Pie Last, but certainly not least! Baking an apple pie in the fall is a must. Like with the quiche, using a store-bought crust is fine, and way easier! Bake the crust according to the instructions. Let

Combine six cups of peeled, thinly sliced apples; ¾ cup of sugar; two tablespoons of whole-wheat flour; one tablespoon of lemon juice; a dash of cinnamon; and a sprinkle each of nutmeg and salt. Spoon the filling into the pie crust, and cover with another pie crust, pinching the two crusts together to seal the pie. Cut slits in the top for ventilation. Bake the pie for 45 minutes at 425 degrees. Let cool. Serve with fresh whipped cream or ice-cream!

Whether you’re baking up an apple pie for a family get-together, or a savory sausage and apple quiche for breakfast, these baked apple recipes are just what you need for the frostier months.

Dry brushing has become the latest trend for those desiring both a beauty and wellness boost. The practice requires you to stand stark naked, brushing your full body using a firm-bristled brush. And apparently, the tradition of shedding your clothes and running a bristly brush over your skin has been in practice for thousands of years.

Dry brushing is a 5,000-year-old Ayurvedic ritual that’s seen a recent resurgence in the beauty world.

So why all the interest?

Dry brushing helps exfoliate, resulting in soft, glowing skin. The stiff bristles help slough off the dead skin cells which otherwise give your skin a dull appearance and rougher texture. After, you’re left with brighter and more radiant skin.

The practice also promotes blood flow and improved circulation. Similar to pinching your cheeks to give your face a rosy hue, sweeping a dry brush over your skin creates a youthful, flushed glow. Plus, increased circulation is always a bonus during those cold, Minnesota winter months!

Dry brushing stimulates your nervous system, leaving you feeling invigorated. If you’re feeling sluggish in the mornings, dry brushing can help you wake up and provide that much-needed extra energy boost.

You’ll find dry brushing also allows for

better absorption in the skin by removing clogged pores. So that moisturizer you spent a fortune on? The moisturizer, lotion, and other products will readily get absorbed, giving your skin that enviable, velvety smooth feel.

However, a couple of purported benefits of dry brushing have been met with skepticism.

One belief is dry brushing helps move your lymphatic system. Your lymphatic system, (in the most simplified terms) is a network that helps rid your body of toxins.

The lymphatic system transports lymph, a fluid comprised of white blood cells, which helps fight off infections and other unwanted intruders in your body. While movement and exercise are proven to effectively move the lymphatic system, there’s disagreement if dry brushing has the same significant impact.

Dry brushing’s other claim to fame is that the practice will diminish cellulite.

While studies are scarce to confirm dry brushing’s cellulite-reducing power, dry brushing does help to temporarily plump up the skin and increase light reflection, giving the illusion of less cellulite.

To get started with your dry brushing practice, you’ll need to find the right brush.

You’ll want a brush with stiff bristles that

won’t damage your skin or be too abrasive. Popular dry brushes typically use boar bristles, but you can find natural, plant-based brushes as well. The only other decision you’ll need to make is if you prefer a brush with a long handle or without. The handle will help you get to those hard-to-reach spots on your back, though others prefer the compact size and control of the handless brush. Your choice!

Once your brush arrives, gently sweep the brush over your body, starting from your feet and working your way up. Brush in long strokes always moving in the direction towards your heart to help promote circulation and blood flow. Next, brush over your hands, continuing with your arms, and again move towards your heart.

You don’t need to apply firm pressure when brushing as it can cause micro-cuts, leading to possible irritation or infection. You want to avoid dry brushing if you have super sensitive skin, skin conditions like eczema, or cuts or sunburn. Dry brushing shouldn’t be a painful experience!

Because dry brush bristles are rougher, you’ll also want to skip running the brush over your face where the skin is more sensitive and delicate. If you want to exfoliate the skin on your face, you’ll find plenty of softer brush options that won’t be as harsh as a body brush.

The practice only takes a few minutes, making dry brushing a quick and easy addition to your beauty ritual. Ideally, dry brush right before you hop in the shower so you can easily rinse off the dead skin cells. Then, follow up with a high-quality moisturizer to rehydrate the skin.

Sure, dry brushing isn’t a magic bullet to perfect skin, but adding the practice to your beauty routine can produce desirable beauty and health benefits, giving you that radiant glow and silky, smooth skin.

Tyanna man One aspiring fashion designer aims to change how we engage with the bridal industry.

As we begin our interview over Zoom, Tyanna Man adjusts her camera as she settles back comfortably onto her bed in the Lakeville home she grew up in. Since Man is currently on summer break from college, she’s staying at her parent’s house. To not be interrupted, she’s chosen her bedroom as the spot for our interview. However, Man is planning on moving into her sorority house Alpha Phi once classes at the University of Minnesota get going again. A sophomore at the U of M majoring in fashion design, Tyanna Man may not yet be a household name, but she’s one you’ll want to watch for.

Man’s passion is in bridal wear. “I love the ivories, whites, and neutral tones. I’m also obsessed with flowers, and I’m drawn to the elegant material and over-the-top style in bridal wear,” Man laughs.

I can see Man’s attraction to bridal fashion extends onto her bedroom walls. Beautifully decorated, above Man’s bed are large and small white roses fixed onto a clean white wall, with her initials T.M., also in the ivory/white color, placed elegantly amongst the flowers. Undoubtedly, Man’s bedroom decor could be lifted straight into a wedding venue without any complaint. A far cry from what my old bedroom looked like growing up with glow-in-thedark stars plastered to the ceiling and a Johnny Depp poster hanging on the wall. But unlike me, Man has always had an eye for fashion and knew fashion design was what she was going to do in life.

Growing up with her parents, younger sister, and grandmother living close by, Man was raised in

a tight-knit family, supportive of her dreams and ambitious goals in fashion. Man’s grandmother has always been a big influencer in her life. Her grandmother taught her how to sew and knit when she was younger. Man would often enlist her grandmother to help her make outfits or clothes that caught her eye as well as creating original ensembles from her own innovative designs. “It was our fun thing to do together,” Man smiles, “She’s pretty artistic herself, I kind of got that from her.”

towards ball gowns and beautiful dresses translated into Man’s love for bridal wear, her passion for bridal fashion goes well beyond the allure of Cinderella dresses and ivory hues.

“Weddings are such an important day in your life. The bride feels so loved and beautiful. A dress really contributes to that feeling, making that person feel special on that one day, especially if they don’t have a lot of money to spend on themselves,” Man explains.

Man’s genuine warmth and outgoing nature shine through during our interview particularly when she speaks about helping brides during one of the biggest moments of their lives. “These moments,” Man says, “are about so much more than the dress. There’s so much stress and everyone has their own stories.” Man is all about a personal connection, revealing an innate desire to learn people’s stories and hear what they have to say and offer. Working this past summer at David’s Bridal, Man

Connection recalls one bride who had exceptional difficulty finding a dress.

“One bride came in who was really self-conscious about her body. She tried on a bunch of dresses and couldn’t find one. But then, I pulled one dress and said, ‘I know you’re not going to like this, but you’re going to try it on anyway.’ She tried it on, loved it, and then instantly started crying. She opened up to me, explaining how her dad recently passed away, how she wished he could be here, and how she doesn’t talk to her family anymore.”

Man provides support, compassion, and kindness during one of the most vulnerable and deeply personal moments for a bride. So even though working at a bridal store isn’t her dream design job, Man loves the one-onone connections, getting to know each bride, and helping them find that one dress to make them feel extraordinary.

Man shares with me, “My grandmother has always told me that no matter people’s beliefs or opinions, or even if you think

they’re doing something that’s not right, always love others before everything else. Take care of people and make sure they’re alright because you never know what they have going on. I’m always carrying that with me from her, and am always treating others with respect, loving your neighbor as yourself.”

Caring for others comes naturally to Man. “I’m super into volunteering,” she remarks. On a mission trip to Guatemala and Haiti, one woman’s story struck a chord with Man. “I was talking with a woman about her wedding.

She didn’t have enough money for a dress so she resorted to draping fabric they had lying around the house and added a random hat.”

The experience inspired an idea in Man to create a future non-profit that would donate wedding dresses to those in need globally, as well as locally, for those in Minnesota who also struggle to afford a wedding dress.

Establishing a non-profit is only part of Man’s vision for her future.

Ultimately, Man wants to create her own bridal line and open her own bridal shop named Tyanna Lee Bridal. (Lee is her middle name.) While Man didn’t have any of the pieces she’s designed on hand to show me, one design Man’s particularly proud of is a bridal sarong, inspired by her Cambodian heritage. “I’m half Cambodian,” says Man, “and I’m really into bridal loungewear. Cambodians wear sarongs, pieces like that, so I’m interested in combining both to create high-end loungewear for brides.”

While Man’s heritage inspires many of her designs, Man’s creative process begins with fabric. “I am very visual and my inspiration comes from seeing different fabrics. So if I see a fabric that I really like, now I’m super into the satiny material, I’ll be inspired and think ‘I want to make this from that.’ I’ll go to the fabric store sometimes to just look at fabric because I have trouble doing it the other way around, designing in my notepad first. I do it a little bit backward.”

One major concept Man wants to incorporate into her bridal business is sustainability. Man’s classes at the U of M opened her eyes to the unsustainability prevalent throughout the fashion industry. In her personal wardrobe, Man limits her consumption and tries to avoid brands and retailers involved with fast

fashion, a term used to describe the process of rapidly mass-producing inexpensive and usually cheaply-made clothing to keep up with the latest fashion trends.

Fast fashion cuts environmental corners to speed up production and rake in higher profits, earning themselves the title of second largest polluter of clean water globally after agriculture.

Man’s sustainable fashion vision involves creating a rental business with her bridal line. “I’ll have pieces that you can buy and pieces you can rent and return like veils, so there’s less waste. A wedding dress is a lot of fabric — dresses can use up to fifteen yards of fabric per ball gown. Millions of yards of fabric are being wasted that could be reused,” asserts Man. She’s right. With over two million weddings held in the U.S. each year, and approximately fifteen yards of fabric per

dress, the amount of fabric used to make wedding dresses adds up to around thirty million yards which will only be used for one day and then carefully stored away in the bride’s closet.

Man becomes more animated and excited as we discuss her business plans. With seemingly unlimited drive and ambition, Man expects to begin building a startup bridal line this year. While the pandemic has halted plans to attend a fabric trade show, Man’s turned to the internet to begin the search for the perfect fabrics and inspiration for her line. There won’t be an official launch this year, but Man wants to get things rolling.

Entrepreneurship isn’t foreign to Man. Both her parents are successful entrepreneurs. Growing up, Man’s parents owned an auto body shop before shifting focus to open a pressure-washing company. Employing a more eco-friendly approach, Man’s parents acquired major contracts with corporations like Kemps, Country Hearth, and FedEx. Man tells me that while her parents recently sold their pressure-washing company, watching her parents navigate running a business motivated her to do the same.

“I grew up with the idea of being your own boss, seeing my parents have a loose schedule and working hard. I was inspired by my parents to want to do something on my own,” says Man. With her parent’s full support of her going after her vision, Man’s not necessarily planning to go the “normal route” instilled in many of us growing up — going from college to a company job isn’t the path Man plans to take.

In preparation for her business launch, Man devours books and podcasts related to fashion, marketing, and business. Man reflects, “A lot of time [building a business] is halting and startling at first, but sometimes you just have to go.” Man listens to TED Talks Daily, TED Talks Business, and seeks out fashion podcasts. Man also turns to Netflix, searching for fashion and design documentaries, even watching documentaries on architectural design. “Watching architectural design docs helps in fashion design,” explains Man. “Although it’s different, it’s helpful to learn about all kinds of design that can apply to clothes.”

Shopping of course is one of Man’s great loves.

Man typically heads to the mall either once a week or every other week perusing stores like Lululemon, Urban Outfitters, Cotton On, and her new favorite discovery, Von Maur.

When asked to describe her style Man is stumped. “I feel like my style changes because one minute I’m like ‘puff sleeves’ and another minute I’m like ‘leather.’ Sometimes I’ll wear sundresses and sometimes I’ll wear sporty clothes. I wish I had one style, but I incorporate everything and like them all,” says a playfully exasperated Man. For a typical daily outfit, Man dons either jeans, jean shorts or a jean skirt with a tan or ivory top, paired with gold jewelry. While Man gravitates towards neutral tones, her style is by no means plain or boring. Man angles the camera over to her closet to show me her favorite piece, a white, feathery sweater that looks so soft you want to reach out and pet it.

“It’s the best sweater ever,” Man says excitedly, “I typically crop this sweater, wearing it with jeans and a leopard or cheetah belt, along with black, platform boots. Super cute for the winter.”

Although Man’s a seasoned fashionista, she does fall victim to what many of us experience when standing in front of our closets — the defeating sensation when you feel you have nothing to wear.

Man loves simply hanging out with her friends, constantly swapping clothes with her sorority sisters who frequently raid her closet and capitalize on her sewing skills with requests to quickly mend a dress or shirt — Man is only too happy to help. While at home, Man plays with her German Shepherd puppy Eva and cat named Clover Joe. You’ll also rarely find Man without her boyfriend by her side, who provides welcomed input and helpful insight when Man’s scoping out new fabrics for designs. Granted, Man says when trying to decide on her day-to-day looks her S.O. isn’t much help, declaring everything she wears looks great. I’d say that’s a good answer on hubby’s part.

Man’s younger sister, who’s entering high school this year, has developed her own style, wearing more adventurous and creative pieces. With a big smile Man laments, “Sometimes I’m like, dang, I wish I was that stylish when I was her [sister’s] age.”

fit, then you’re having a good day. You look good, you feel good. That’s how I see it. So when I go to the mall I love to dress up in one of my favorite outfits or every time I go out to eat I love to dress up — you feel better. When you look good, you feel good and that’s where that confidence comes from. Once I started getting into fashion and embraced it, I felt better about myself.”

On Man’s blog, she states, “One of the reasons I am so passionate about fashion is that I believe it can do so many things for you. While confidence key to living your best life, fashion is the key to confidence.

What you wear defines you, and it speaks volumes.”

As of now, Man plans to stay in Minnesota to build her bridal fashion empire. “I love Minnesota so much! It’s such a good place to live,” expresses Man. While the thought of heading out to the coasts has crossed her mind, Man verbalizes what many aspiring fashion designers feel, “There are so many designers out there, especially in LA or NYC. With so many ideas out there, it’s hard to create your own unique style. Something you design is probably already out there in some way, shape, or form. Putting your own unique twist on

By Hannah Harms This past week I met with the founder, designer, and creative genius behind the company, Urban Undercover, Sairey Gernes. I have to admit, before speaking to her, I was a bit nervous and intimidated.

There has always been this “norm,” at least in the movies, of CEO’s and business owners being these frightening, high and mighty people, and that it is a privilege to be able to interview one. However, hearing the inside scoop about Gernes’ life and the company, I could not have been more off about a statement.

Within the first five minutes of speaking with Gernes, I felt an instant connection. It could have been the fact that both of us were wearing matching white tank tops and had similar nose studs or the way we bonded over the love of travel and sustainable fashion.

However, her cheery, striking personality, grabbed my attention and made me want to hear everything about her life and the business she created.

When I first asked Gernes the tough questions about what made

her want to become an entrepreneur, she mentioned how owning her own business was never the end goal.

“I didn’t necessarily set out to start a business. I really didn’t.”

The direction behind Urban Undercover began with Gernes’ love of travel. It all started when she took her first trip out of the country during her senior year in high school. Since then, her adoration toward traveling grew even more. Gernes had the opportunity to study abroad in Spain and continually moved to different states since graduating.

Gernes first received an undergraduate degree in Spanish at the University of Michigan. However, she wasn’t sure about what type of career she wanted to pursue.

Therefore, a few years later, Gernes decided to move to Miami to chase a Master’s degree in Advertising.

The journey doesn’t stop there. Like many other recent graduates, she hit a roadblock again, where she was unsure what path she wanted

to follow. With a few freelance positions in advertising and serving jobs to pay off the loans, Gernes was on the move always until she found her next calling.

Similar to many others in current society, Gernes is a go-getter. Between balancing multiple jobs every day and having a social life, she was always on the move.

Gernes described how she would leave her home at six a.m. and not return until after 10 p.m.; she needed to bring multiple outfits with her to change into between jobs.

However, one aspect always was not meeting her criteria in comfort and style. Underwear.

During the early 2000s, Gernes set on a mission to design a new market of underwear. At the time, the major undergarment companies solely focused on a “one size fits all” market, which left individuals who were not the intended size struggling.

Gernes discussed with me that she is a size 12, which is considered to be average.

Therefore, how could the underwear not fit?

Due to this, she set out to find the perfect pair of underwear that made women look and feel their best.

“This brand is for everyone, and she wants it to be for everyone; it’s very inclusive,” said Gernes close friend and staff member Lizanne Dooner.

For nearly four years, Gernes went through trial and error to build her brand. From designing the garments to working with manufacturers, the company had its ups and downs. However, in 2014, Gernes rebranded her company and began to see a positive difference. Urban Undercover became a brand that married travel and portability of intimate garments into one.

Since her relaunch, Gernes has been focusing on making changes that benefit her and benefit the company and consumers who buy her products. One aspect Gernes wholeheartedly follows is wanting to make a difference. If she feels she is not doing something beneficial or positive for others, she will make a change until she does. From focusing on bringing in more quality material, to becoming a more sustainable company, Gernes is shifting her focus into a reality.

“I knew this brand was the perfect fit for her. When she added the travel aspect, sustainability and continues to get more into that it keeps making sense, this company is becoming her own,” said Dooner.

Within recent years, there has been a massive drive with companies to switch to more sustainable options. Due to Gernes love for traveling, she has had the opportunity to see firsthand how humans have impacted the environment worldwide. Therefore, one of her main projects is to reduce the amount of waste her company uses in its resources and materials.

“As a traveler, the amount of waste and plastic that you see is devastating. It’s really easy to live here and not know about it. This is something I believe in sharing. We are trying to eliminate our use of plastic in any way that we can, as well as educate,” said Gernes.

Although Gernes had no intention of opening her own business, she has set out to impact women’s body images and the environment positively. With a company that has been held together by a strong group of womenfrom employees to designers, to manufacturers, and all points in between, there is no doubt Urban Undercover will continue to blossom.

It all started in January of 2017 with a trip to India. At the time, Kaylie, a Twin Cities native, had an established fashion blog and was about to complete her Fashion Merchandising program at Saint Catherine’s University in Saint Paul, Minnesota. Through a school travel program, Kaylie spent two weeks visiting over a dozen garment factories in India, and it was then that she was exposed to the harsh realities of the fashion world. She hadn’t yet realized that this marked the beginning of her journey into becoming a fashion influencer and marketer with an important purpose.

Kaylie began her online presence as a fashion influencer in 2014. She created a look-book to impress her professors at Saint Kate’s, and it quickly turned into a blog. She typically wrote about popular topics, like where to find deals on clothing, or the best “dupes” for expensive brands. She was promoting stores like H & M, Forever 21, and Charlotte Rousse, not fully understanding what she was supporting. Back then, fast-fashion brands like these were simply seen as affordable to her. However, she felt like something was missing. “I wanted something that had a little more purpose.”

That’s when the opportunity to go to India arose.

While in India, Kaylie spent two weeks visiting factories and learning about the ethical and sustainable production of shoes, clothing, and accessories.

Although the collapse of the Dhaka garment factory in Bangladesh in 2013 gave Kaylie insight into the poor conditions factory workers face, seeing firsthand what these conditions are like, and how the industry is beginning to address these issues, inspired her.

“I came back to the United States after those two weeks and I was, this is what I’ve been looking for,” Kaylie explains. “There’s a misconception that sustainable clothing is expensive, but it’s just been branded and talked about incorrectly.” Now, as a 25-year-old with a newfound perspective on the fashion industry, Kaylie has transformed her blog, Instagram, and entire marketing strategy into a medium that allows her to share her knowledge and beliefs.

Since her trip to India, Kaylie has adapted a new set of standards. When it comes to who she collaborates with, Kaylie aims to partner with brands that are at least one of her four ideals: local, ethical, sustainable, and charitable. “They don’t have to have all of those things, but I make sure that they have at least one.”

With a growing list of followers, Kaylie cares about the messages she sends to her fans. She undoubtedly loves the fashion industry and equally cares about the impact it has on our world. “I like to promote brands that create their clothes ethically, pay their workers a livable wage, and have a safe building. I also like sustainable creation, when they focus on not only how they affect people, but also the planet.”

Kaylie has the gift of promotion, and she knows it. It’s refreshing to see how quickly her focus shifted once she realized what she can accomplish. She transformed her platform into a place that not only promotes the ethical creation of clothing, but things like body-positivity, faith and spirituality, and embracing your natural self. Simply put, Kaylie promotes what she believes in. “I feel like I’m at a comfortable medium where I can share a lot about myself, but then also be selling things because people trust my opinion and trust the brands that I like.” She even has a Tiktok account dedicated to posting her “Thursday Thoughts,” where she talks about something she recently learned, her faith, or a brand she likes.

When asking Kaylie what it’s like finding local businesses that care about the same causes she does, her answer is simple. “Working with businesses in the Twin Cities is easy.”

One of Kaylie’s favorite brands to collaborate with currently is Spoonful Apparel. Located in Minneapolis, Spoonful Apparel donates half of their profits to fight childhood hunger, and Worldwide Responsible Accredited Production (W.R.A.P.) certifies them. Kaylie delves into what she loves about

working with Spoonful Apparel. “The woman who started it is involved in give-back programs, and she’s a woman of faith like me.” In the past, Kaylie struggled to find ways to mix fashion and faith, and working with businesses like Spoonful Apparel has helped her bridge that gap. She partners with Spoonful Apparel every month, promoting their shirts on her Instagram (IG) account @kaylie.n.oconnor. You can find her modeling tee shirts that have positive phrases on them like “I Choose Happiness” or “A thrill of Hope.”

Another brand that Kaylie loves to collaborate with is Oktober Kissed. Based out of Minnesota, Oktober Kissed is a non-profit Christian company that sells women’s apparel and handmade earrings. A portion of their profits goes to Operation Underground Railroad (OUR), who help rescue victims of human sex trafficking. “Every job and collaboration is a blessing, so why would I not try to incorporate my faith into my business?” Kaylie points out.

Kaylie is genuinely grateful for her opportunities. She is thoughtful in every stage of her job; carefully choosing who she partners with, what messages she sends to her followers, and how her work impacts others. All the while, being her authentic self.

With a firm grasp on the fashion market, Kaylie plans to expand. A quick look at her IG reveals her makeup skills, and she hopes to do more within the makeup world.

This year, Kaylie began a partnership with Beautycounter, a cosmetics brand that promotes clean beauty and sustainability. Benefit Corporation, Leaping Bunny, Carbonfund, Chemical Footprint Project, The Environmental Working Group (EWG), and American Sustainable Business Council certify them.

Not only does Kaylie promote their products on her Instagram, but she also works behind the camera snapping photos for their feed.

Kaylie plans to further pursue photography. As someone who takes most of her IG photos herself, it makes sense that Kaylie has gained an interest in photography. She has already worked with a handful of businesses this year including coffee shops and chiropractic offices.

It may seem like Kaylie has her work cut out for her, but when you have the gift of promotion like she does, the only way is up. With an established blog, an ever-increasing social media following, a long list of collaborators in her back pocket, and extensive knowledge of the fashion and beauty industries, having ambitious goals is simply what comes naturally to her. With so much passion in her heart, I have no doubt that Kaylie will achieve them.
