Welcome to the 2016 VERDEXCHANGE Green Marketmaker’s Conference January 24 - 26, 2016
6
Dear VX2016 Conference Participants, Welcome!
David Abel Chairman VerdeXchange verdexchange.org 213-623-3801
Clean Energy and Sustainable Practices Acquire Market Scale & Respect
VerdeXchange’s 9th annual California Green Economy Marketmakers conference attracts again, under one roof, decision-makers shaping the future globally and as well as in California- CEO’s and senior managers, utility executives and regulators, venture funders and technologists who are driving markets in energy, water systems, nextgen transport, infrastructure finance, resiliency & the built environment, sustainable agriculture, carbon pricing and innovation/research. The VX2016 Agenda includes over 50 cross platform expert panels. Among the presenters are: SCE President Dr. Pedro Pizarro, architect Frank Gehry, Tesla’s Diarmuid O’Connell, Lyft’s Emily Castor, LA Metro CEO Phillip Washington, David Kramer - developer of Cornell’s “game-changing” residential high-rise in NYC, NEDO Chairman Kazuo Furukawa, CARB Chairwoman Mary Nichols, NACWA’s President Adel Hagekhalil, Inglewood’s James Butts host City Mayor of the NFL’s “resettling” Rams, Berkshire Hathaway Energy’s Jonathan Weisgall, California IBank CEO Teveia Barnes, AECOM Board member Linda Griego, Solar City’s Sanjay Ranchod, Renovate America’s Eliot Abel, Ontario Provincial Cap-and-Trade expert Robert Fleming, CAISO CEO Steve Berberich, Mayer Brown P3 Attorney David Narefsky, NASDAQ’s Evan Harvey, LA County Chief Deputy Director of Public Works Mark Pestrella, Assistant Secretary of the Navy Dennis McGinn, and BMW’s Frank Breust. VX2016 affords each of our 700 registrants an opportunity to learn, share and leverage world-class technologies and sustainable practices. In attendance today are an array of market influentials: software app designers; wastewater, storm- and ground-water managers; battery, solar & wind developers; electric & natural gas & autonomous vehicle companies; hydrogen and fuel cell entrepreneurs, waste-to-energy pioneers, grid operators, energy distributors & micro-grid innovators; pension and venture investors; legislators & regulators; carbon traders & environmental stewards; shared economy start-ups & public transport operators; utility executives; builders of resilient infrastructure/facilities; leading architects & city planners; corporate sustainability reporters; as well as international investigators and licensors of ground-breaking research and technology.
Propelling interest and growing attendance is that clean-energy investment has quadrupled over the past decade. Over 60 percent of the new power coming online is renewable. The curve is going up, because the cost of renewables continues to go down. The result is a world that is going to be driven by renewable energy. With respect to the sharing economy, six months ago there were over 100,000 such companies, now the number is doubling every 90 days. If testimonials from past VX Conferences are an indicator, evolving public policy, more often than not led by California, continues to drive demand for new applications and services to balance energy needs and economic constraints while meeting evolving climate change targets and regulatory requirements. But China and Canadian Provinces are also evolving their climate policies. Governor Brown’s State of State message captures the moment: “The Paris climate agreement was a breakthrough and California led the way. Over 100 states, provinces and regions have now signed on to our Under 2 MOU. The goal is to bring per capita greenhouse gases down to two tons per person. This will take decades and vast innovation. But with SB 350, we’re on our way.” Governor Brown also referenced the state’s $7.5-billion water bond— the single- largest investment ever—in water recycling, conservation, storm water capture, desalination, groundwater remediation. Additionally, California’s PUC this week is addressing California’s grid and net metering; Los Angeles’ San Pedro Bay Ports’ recently voted to approve new funds for investment in technology and sustainable goods movement; Metro is continuing to build out a half-dozen new rail lines; Los Angeles City and County are re-engineering their public works systems to better address El Nino and the region’s resiliency challenges; and local governments are continuing to green their planning and building codes to meet environmental goals. All are consistent with global trends. In closing we welcome you to VX2016. Do not hesitate to share your suggestions for improving VerdeXchange 2017—as well as our upcoming fourth VerdeXchange Arizona Conference set for December 7-9, 2016 in Phoenix. 6
