Bloomberg New Energy Finance now reports that investment in the clean energy economy exceeded $322.1 billion in 2018. These investments are an integral and growing portion of the world’s present and future economy. For example, corporate interest in clean power is surging; as of November 2018, 155 companies had pledged publicly to fuel their operations with 100% renewable energy. Clearly, the “verde” marketplace is benefiting from ubiquitous innovation, new investment and B2B collaborations, along with growing consumer adoption of low-carbon products and practices worldwide. VX2019’s array of 50+ panels—whose topics have evolved since our first event in January 2008—are heavily focused on the marketplaces for distributed renewable energy; zero-emission vehicles; decarbonized and net-zero buildings; smart city implementation strategies; organic waste management; blockchain’s impact on the supply chain; and blue technologies accelerating a now thriving ocean-based economy. VX2019 panels will showcase how utility regulations and the grid are adapting to the growth of renewables; how tragic climate events have created a new “abnormal” planning scenario for buildings; how new digital technologies are revolutionizing mobility; how sustainable supply chains are incorporating cybersecurity & blockchain; and, how resilient infrastructure and advanced energy & water storage technologies are attracting record investments.

Our 12th annual VerdeXchange California Conference affords attendees an intimate opportunity to assess the evolution of the clean and green economy—both globally and subnationally. Whether as the result of technological innovation or well-funded energy research, or simply in response to successful private-sector investment, the clean energy economy has scaled exponentially.

Conference Map

A decade ago, VerdeXchange captured a significant turn from climate change policy advocacy to the execution challenges of meeting marketplace opportunities. Twelve years later, it is safe to affirm that despite the headwinds of competing U.S. federal policies, a multi-trillion-dollar green economy continues to grow—especially in California and the Pacific Rim. The inaugural address of California Governor Gavin Newsom’s articulated the importance of today’s moment in history: “California has always helped write America’s future. But what we do today is even more consequential because of what’s happening in our country … The water we drink, the air we breathe—they all hang in the balance. The country is watching us. The world is waiting on us. The future depends on us. And we will seize this moment.”

California remains a model for global cities and regions wishing to incent collaborations to reduce carbon emissions and spur innovation and economic growth. In closing, I welcome you to VX2019. Enjoy the Conference.
