Originaire de Budapest, Gábor Takács-Nagy s’est formé auprès de Milstein, Rados, Mihaly, Székely, Végh et Kurtág. De 1975 à 1992, il est membre fondateur et leader du célèbre Takács Quartet, fondant par la suite le Takács Piano Trio, le quatuor à cordes Mikrokosmos, puis son propre orchestre à cordes, la Camerata Bellerive. Directeur musical du Verbier Festival Chamber Orchestra, de la Camerata de Manchester ainsi que Principal chef invité de l’Orchestre du Festival de Budapest, il est également professeur à la Haute École de Musique de Genève et titulaire d’une chaire internationale de musique de chambre au Royal Northern College of Music de Manchester. Nommé membre honoraire de la Royal Academy of Music de Londres, le Hongrois a reçu le prestigieux Prix Béla BartókDitta Pásztory et plus récemment le titre d’Artiste Émérite de Hongrie. Born in Budapest, Gábor Takács-Nagy trained with Milstein, Rados, Mihaly, Székely, Végh and Kurtág. From 1975 to 1992, he was a founding member and leader of the famous Takács Quartet, later founding the Takács Piano Trio, the Mikrokosmos string quartet, and then his own string orchestra, the Camerata Bellerive. Music Director of the Verbier Festival Chamber Orchestra, the Manchester Camerata and Principal Guest Conductor of the Budapest Festival Orchestra, he is a professor at the Haute École de Musique de Genève and holds an international chair of chamber music at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester. He is an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Academy of Music in London and has been awarded the prestigious Béla Bartók-Ditta Pásztory Prize and more recently the title of Emeritus Artist of Hungary.
La direction fluide et la musicalité pénétrante de James Gaffigan fascinent les orchestres (Philharmonique de Los Angeles, Tonhalle de Zurich, Orchestre royal du Concertgebouw, Orchestre de Paris…) et les maisons d’opéra (Metropolitan Opera de New York, Bayerische Staatsoper de Munich, Wiener Staatsoper, Opernhaus de Zurich…) du monde entier. Alors qu’il est Chef assistant du Cleveland Orchestra auprès de Franz Welser-Möst en 2004, il remporte la même année le Premier Prix au concours international Sir Georg Solti. À la direction remarquable d’opus lyriques de Mozart, Rossini, Puccini et Strauss, le chef américain a également contribué à la renommée internationale du Luzerner Sinfonieorchester, dont il a été Chef principal. Il est depuis cette année Directeur musical du Verbier Festival Junior Orchestra. James Gaffigan’s natural ease and compelling musicianship put him in high demand with orchestras (Los Angeles Philharmonic, Zurich Tonhalle, Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, Orchestre de Paris...) and opera houses (New York Metropolitan Opera, Munich Bayerische Staatsoper, Wiener Staatsoper, Zurich Opernhaus...) around the world. In 2004, he was Assistant Conductor of the Cleveland Orchestra under Franz Welser-Möst, and the same year he won the First Prize of the Sir Georg Solti International Competition. In addition to his outstanding conducting of operas by Mozart, Rossini, Puccini and Strauss, the American conductor has also contributed to the international reputation of the Luzerner Sinfonieorchester, where he has just concluded his tenure as Principal Conductor. This is James Gaffigan’s first year as Music Director of the Verbier Festival Junior Orchestra.
