Venus exists to help women achieve freedom through business. It is so fundamental to all that we do as a business community that it’s become our mission in the world. We are here to support you to determine your own course and life direction. We’re committed to you creating financial and personal freedom so you can continue creating work you love and living your life on purpose. This is why I chose freedom as our theme this issue. Freedom comes down to having the power to choose. And like every other magazine I’ve published, I’ve gone on a journey of discovery. I’ve been called to choose what I do with my time on a daily basis, where Venus will grow, what we offer women in business and what we stand for as a company. I’m enjoying the freedom of becoming more than I could ever imagine. Until this summer I didn’t realise I was such a talented creator. It was after completing the talent dynamics test that I truly explored my ‘Creator’ strength and allowed myself to listen and trust that what I was creating was good. I had to let go of what I thought I was good at to allow this newly discovered strength to blossom. I have loved creating the Sassy Business Training programme, and the Business Team modules along with all our meeting topics and education pieces. How would your life be different if you let go of what you thought you were and allowed who you are meant to become to flourish?

I chose to start my business because I wanted the freedom to choose what I filled my day with, who I worked with and what difference I made in the world. In this issue you’ll hear from some of our amazing members about why they started their own business and what they’re up to in the world. Along with awesome and relevant articles on legal, insurance and financial matters. Denise, our cover girl, is an inspiration to me and embodies all things Venus. She’s passionate, committed and is building a successful company alongside building a charitable organisation. I’d like to express a heartfelt thank you to you for being part of the Venus family. I’d like to share how proud I am of the women who are Venus regional managers around New Zealand and how grateful I am for the love and energy they pour into Venus to make it a thriving network. I’d also like to say how blessed I feel to be working with the Venus HQ team and our business managers, those women who I chose to share my days with and who are my soul sisters. FROM VENUS HQ NETWORKING GROUPS - VANESSA DAVEY We are thrilled to have a full regional management team of twelve passionate women. We launched Auckland CBD, Howick and Te Awamutu networking groups to kick the year off bringing our group total to 47. We’re set to launch a new group in Christchurch, Auckland and Tauranga and have plans to launch into Nelson, Taranaki and Taupo this year. We’re developing more resources and education to support our members to thrive in business.

auranga woman Denise Arnold is co-director of a law firm, the founder of a charitable trust that works with the poorest of the poor in Cambodia, a student of International Development and a supporter of the World Justice Project. Kathryn Overall meets Denise and discovers a woman who is ambitious and compassionate in equal parts and who is an inspiring voice for global sisterhood. A quick google search of Tauranga woman, Denise Arnold, is enough to reveal that she is no couch potato. The topranking search result reveals Denise’s profile as co-director of Bay of Plenty law firm ‘Lyon, O’Neale, Arnold’. Denise looks elegantly professional in a navy dress with black lace trim, a floor-to-ceiling bookcase of gold-embossed legal texts behind her. Wander just a few links down the search results and you’ll discover quite a different Denise. The elegant dress is traded for linen shorts and a simple long-sleeved white cotton shirt, suitable for the third-world setting in which the photo is taken. Denise is perched on the ground, shading her face from the sun, watching children at a school in one of the poorest rural areas in Cambodia. To catch Denise just sitting and watching is rare. Her role as director of the Cambodia Charitable Trust (CCT), founded by Denise in 2008, keeps her on her feet and constantly moving, motivated by her commitment to empower Cambodian children and their families to escape the trap of poverty and its associated evils. What a google search won’t show is that in addition to her two director roles, Denise is also frantically finishing her thesis for her Masters of International Development. She took on the degree ‘in her spare time’ just to make sure that she wasn’t unwittingly doing any harm with her development initiatives despite her intentions to do good - a pitfall she has seen other organisations fall into. How does she fit it all in? “My car needs a clean,” laughs Denise. “I’m not house-proud. I don’t watch television. I’m not distracted by other stuff, so I think I’ve got plenty of time.” None of the profiles that surface online will do justice to the experience of meeting Denise in person. Her attractive smile and warm, down-to-earth manner soften her potentially intimidating sharp intelligence, dogged determination, goal-driven ambition and her principled passion for justice and freedom.

The vibrant green and orange floral oil painting which dominates the wall of her law firm office hints at the big heart and bright compassion which underpins her effective ‘get the job done’ approach. “I am very results-focused in everything I do,” says Denise. “It’s part of my legal training. We are trained to look for problems and then to solve them. If I see something that’s wrong, I don’t want to talk about it, I don’t want to sit there and commiserate with the person. I have a strong drive to find the solution.” The context in which Denise finds this most challenging is in her work with the children in Cambodia. “The hardest thing for me is to keep my eye on the big picture but not lose sight of the individual stories. Each one of them is a little tragedy you could get lost in. But I can’t become everyone’s caregiver. I need to change the big picture so I can lead us forward.”

“It’s something I can’t work in, rescuing children from trafficking, because I think I would just burn out so quickly,” says Denise. “I also think that for every child that you rescue you could prevent another from being there, so I’ve focused on the top of the cliff. That’s very much where I think we are playing, giving people the capacity to change their life.” Denise grew up as one of three close-knit sisters with parents who cultivated an elastic sense of family, always reaching out to include and embrace other people. Denise has carried this sense of kinship and responsibility to humankind into her adult life. “I owe it to other woman to support them and I think I owe it to other girls to give them the chance I had as a girl,” she says. “I think women are really good at being part of a sisterhood. I think there’s also an aspect of being a global parent in a way. You see women keeping an eye out for other peoples kids - global parenting is just an extension of the sisterhood across to women and children in another country.” Closer to home Denise is also an advocate for women in business, creating opportunities for women to network and connect through the firms ‘Wonder Women’ initiative. Three of the women lawyers at the firm are also Venus members. “The firm is right in behind Venus,” says Denise. “It’s always been an interest of ours for women to support women and the core principles of Venus are very similar to ours.” At this stage, Denise sees herself continuing with her current ratio of lawfirm to CCT work. “I think that I’m happy with the balance I have now. It gives me the stability to know that I can come back and know where my pens are, but the challenge of being able to travel and further the work of the trust in Cambodia. Here in Tauranga, I am a legal advocate for my clients. In Cambodia, I think that my job is to be an advocate for the girls and therefore represent hope, or bring hope to their lives.” Luckily for them, Denise has achieved the personal and professional freedom to be able to do just that.

A

t twenty-four I walked into my first ever personal development programme not knowing I was about to experience a turning point in my life. My mum had died nine years earlier from cancer. For those nine years I built up resentment and anger for the world and myself, and had set up camp in victimville — life happened to me.

During that weekend I learned that at any given moment, I had the ability and power to choose. I learned that I didn’t have to let negative experiences define me and that I could choose my thoughts, feelings, words and actions. I experienced immense freedom with this insight and with it the responsibility I realised I, and everyone has to create their own reality from the choices we make in every moment. I believe it is your choice and your responsibility to be happy, to create work you love, to build a community around you that supports you, to be aware of the impact you have on others and to contribute positively to the world. Some choose to acknowledge they have a choice and others would rather live in victimville, blaming the world for the way life is turning out. This power to choose is the ultimate definition of freedom. Everyone has their own definition and when I asked through our social media community what freedom meant to Venus women, every answer was as unique as the individual who posted it. I see that as being the beauty of having freedom, the power or right to act, speak or think as one wants. As the women shared what freedom meant to them, they were showing the ultimate freedom and power we have — the right to choose our beliefs. With great power comes great responsibility. This responsibility involves taking one hundred per cent accountability for everything we choose and therefore everything we are

creating in our life. Whether you are aware of it or not, you always have a choice. The words you speak, the thoughts you allow into your mind, the actions you take — you are always choosing.

FREEDOM WITH YOUR THOUGHTS — YOU ARE CHOosing • To be your own inner critic or be the best cheerleader you’ve ever had as an inner coach. • To react without thinking of the consequences or to stop, think and then act.

FREEDOM WITH YOUR FEELINGS — YOU are CHOosing • To stay angry and resentful towards another or let go and be grateful for the experience. • To sit in your emotions as though they own you or realise they are feelings you feel and you can choose them.

FREEDOM WITH YOUR ACTIONS — YOU are CHOosing • To stay in a job you hate or follow your passions and start a business you love. • To share and contribute to others or to take and think only of yourself. Choose wisely. You have a responsibility to yourself, your family and our global sisterhood to choose empowering thoughts, encouraging words and generous actions.


HIGH ENERGY = HIGH FREEDOM There is an emerging science of Energy Management that focuses on managing ones energy, not managing ones time.

When you have this freedom you can have deep, healthy relationships, work with clients well and you feel happier.

Can I focus my attention on one thing? What’s a challenging thing I can do next on my schedule?

The human spirit - the energy of meaning and purpose, working to your values, choosing your faith.

When you have this freedom you feel on purpose and you can seek god or spirit on your own terms.

When your physical, emotional, mental and spiritual energy is high, you’ll experience a high amount of freedom. From this place comes financial freedom. You’ll be in flow, free to allow opportunities, relationships, clients, money and wealth to come to you. I see some women try and go straight to creating financial freedom, without first working on and improving their

If you are starting a business just for the security of a paycheck, well, then you’re in the wrong business. That’s how employees operate.

Delay taking a salary until your business is generating cash flow from sales. In some cases, this may not be possible due to an extended development phase, but for most people it is possible. Also, if possible, keep your fulltime job and start your business part time. By delaying taking a salary, you can reinvest sales to help grow your business.

GET YOUR DUE When you do business with others, you deserve to get paid. Plain and simple. Invoice your customers quickly upon shipment of goods or when services are provided. Require payment upfront until credit is established. Establish late payment penalties and minimum orders, and leverage technology like direct deposit or online payment to speed up the revenue stream.

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO start YOUR BUSINESS? I spotted, or rather stumbled across a gap in the market. Quite a few years ago I was raising five children on my own, and working as an aromatherapist and part time teacher in Whitianga. I wanted to buy effective, natural health and first aid products that were affordable and of the highest quality. I just couldn’t find anything. That’s where my exciting journey began. I started making my own skincare and healing balms. I developed these originally for my family, then friends and now clients. A move to Tauranga 17 years ago was the best choice I made. It led to a new marriage and after a spell at youth tutoring, working alongside a physio and osteopath for over 10 years, I grabbed the opportunity to dive back into plant chemistry and study. Immediately following my guest visit to a Venus Networking Group meeting in October 2012, I leapt in and developed Bee all Balms. I started to produce the products commercially and I’ve since expanded into men’s and women’s skincare and animal balms, and rebranded in May 2013 as HoneyBliss.

WHAT DO YOU OFFER? HoneyBliss uses quality, naturally grown ingredients to produce beautiful skincare and healing balms, all handmade by me from my home. I try and source many of my ingredients locally. My retail side runs from my website, my home and parties, and my wholesale side which supplies speciality outlets from osteopathy, to beauty therapy, natural health clinics and vets from my range of over fifty products.

WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT RUNNING YOUR OWN BUSINESS?

WHAT LESSONS did you learn from these challenges? Some very wise Venusians helped me to see that I needed to plan, plan, plan and schedule my time to achieve my goals. After trying the one woman band scattered approach, I have referred myself to many Venus women who are experts in their own field. I’ve begun delegating tasks outside my knowledge and experience. My confidence and competence in selling myself and my skills has been a work in progress but with encouragement and critique from my amazing Venus group, I have really improved.

WHAT GROWTH HAVE YOU EXPERIENCED BY BEING IN VENUS? HoneyBliss probably wouldn’t have got off the ground if Venus hadn’t been part of my business journey. After my first visit I was hooked. The ideas started sparking and they haven’t really stopped. Venus women, both inside and outside my networking group, have inspired, encouraged, taught and supported me. They have laughed with me (at my dreadful limericks) and cried with me (grieving after my mum’s death last year). Personally I have grown alongside the growth of HoneyBliss. The challenge to learn and improve is ongoing. What more could you ask?

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE to other members to help them maximise their membership? TURN UP to meetings, encourage, support and teach and learn where you can. Go to HQ run events. LISTEN well. Take notes. Set ongoing RAVES both inside and outside your group and region. Get to know women and their businesses and refer in person, social media and magazines. Just do it!

Everything! I love waking up feeling excited about the day ahead and the challenges that it brings. Planning my day and week has become routine (with the help of great advice), and I pack a lot into it. A typical day might see me working with accounts, phone calls, correspondence, making product, massage clients and dealing with online orders or a wholesale product enquiry. I am always blown away when I receive wonderful feedback about how products have helped people’s health.

Success is waking up excited about doing what I love, both in business and personally. To me it’s all about loving what you do and sharing that with others, both in my personal and business life. It’s what comes from the heart that matters.

For a very creative spirit, I think constant planning, online marketing and media, and creating scheduled days and weeks was very hard for me. When the business was starting up, I kept so much in my head, now I have to write it down and have a procedure for both retail and wholesale orders and follow ups. Confidence to go out and market myself was also an issue, despite faith in my products.

THE BARE BASICS OF TAKING ON STAFF VENUS BUSINESS EXPERT LAW

T

aking that next step of paying people to help in your business is often daunting. Suddenly your business is responsible for others and has greater financial responsibilities. Further, the legal obligations attached to your business suddenly increase dramatically. It is not uncommon for business owners to lie awake at night stressing over the enormity of this step in their business growth. The purpose of this article is to assist you when you take this next step. To make things simpler and less stressful for you. Ok, so you have identified you need help. The very first question to ask is “Do I need an Independent Contractor or an Employee?� In issue eight of the Venus Magazine we covered the advantages and disadvantages attached to using contractors or employees in your business. If you would like a copy of this article it is available on the Venus website.

Ensure you have the correct documents in place outlining the commercial arrangement you have agreed to. We recommend using an appropriately drafted Statutory Declaration alongside a written Independent Contractors Contract. It is important to be open and transparent about what you have agreed to. Disputes are less likely to happen if both parties are clear about their responsibilities. Ensure you have both these documents duly signed and that both parties retain a signed copy of the documents.

As a starting point your business is required to have in place a written health and safety policy outlining hazards attached to your business and attached to the tasks undertaken within your business. You are required to discuss health and safety issues with your Independent Contractor, prior to them commencing work for your business. WorkSafe New Zealand has an excellent website with tools and resources to assist business owners on this issue. We strongly recommend you use this site.

EMPLOYEES If you are a business owner intending to recruit employees, ensure you have in place certain documents for your business before offering employment. We suggest: Talking to your accountant with regard to tax implications and KiwiSaver obligations. Many accountants offer small businesses cost-effective assistance with payroll and the management of KiwiSaver.

TYPE OF EMPLOYEE Give thought to the type of employee you require. For example do you require; • casual employees? • employees on fixed term employment agreements (for example, only for a six month period of time to assist over a very busy time of year) • employees for an indefinite period of time (permanent employees)

• employees to work part-time hours or full-time hours? • a trial period? • employees with set qualifications and/or experience?

PRE-EMPLOYMENT FORM Once you have established the answers to these questions, you are ready to draft your Pre-Employment Form and your draft Employment Agreement. Please note that the Employment Relations Act 2000 requires all employment agreements to contain certain information. Email me for a free resource that provides more information on this issue.

TRIAL PERIODS If you intend to use a trial period, you will need to address this issue before offering employment. This requires you to inform applicants that a trial period is attached to the role, and you must also have a duly drafted employment agreement, with a trial period clause compliant with legislation. This agreement must be signed by the potential employee, before they commence any work at all for your business. Email me for a free resource on trial periods that may assist you with this issue.

EMPLOYMENT AGREEMENTS It is a legal requirement to have compliant employment agreements, duly signed, for all your employees. Provide each of your employees with a signed copy of their employment agreement, and retain a signed copy of each agreement for your business. These agreements must be stored securely and are protected by the provisions of the Privacy Act 1993. It is also a legal requirement to advise your potential employees of their right to seek independent advice about the employment agreement before they sign the agreement. Further, you are required to provide appropriate time to seek such advice.

HEALTH AND SAFETY Health and Safety obligations are becoming more onerous for employees this year as a result in amendments to legislation. Again we suggest employers access the WorkSafe website for assistance with their obligations.

1. Notice the words you use

5. JOURNAL

Every word you speak is creating the reality you are living. Your words are impacting both yourself and everyone in your life. They also build or break your reputation. Start a practice of being mindful of the words you use and remove any judgemental, limiting or filler words including like, should, can’t, um, you know.

As a woman you have alot of thoughts and feelings going around your mind and heart. Journaling is a powerful way to express yourself in an intimate and safe way. My journal has become my greatest business and personal growth tool. Each morning I write anything I’m thinking and feeling, plus I use it as a tool to brainstorm, ask questions, develop my intuition and clarify my thinking and emotions.

2. Stop for ten minutes a day Your mind, body and soul need downtime. We’re so busy running around growing businesses and families that we are setting ourselves up for a stressful, exhausted and sick future. Introduce a ritual of stopping for ten minutes a day — once you’ve dropped your kids off, just before lunch or at a designated time each day — and you’ll experience more freedom in every area of your being. I listen to a podcast from Meditation Oasis each day. They have many listed so I get to choose the time and focus of the meditation.

3. TIME CHUNK YOUR WEEK Put similar activities together in one or two hour blocks throughout your week. Your brain will thank you for it and you’ll be more productive and have more mental energy and freedom. My brain is fresh in the morning, so I have time chunked 6–9am three times a week to give myself uninterrupted, quality time to write and create.

4. CATCH A LIMITING BELIEF What you believe about the world, your business and yourself is creating the reality you are living. This is true whether you believe it or not. You’ll have limiting beliefs (decisions you’ve made that you now see as the truth or reality) that are impacting negatively on your business, your life and yourself. Beliefs are just made up, which means you can choose to believe something different. Check in with yourself occasionally by asking ‘Is that true?’ I used to have an ‘I’m all on my own’ belief which was stopping me from delegating to my team which led to exhaustion. I’m now systemising and delegating all over the show and the freedom I feel — exhilarating!

6. Create and stick to a savings plan Sticking to a regular savings plan is a great way to achieve your goals and get your finances sorted. Choose a weekly amount you can afford and open a new bank account just for these savings. The feeling that comes from knowing you’re building a nest egg for future investments is motivating and inspiring. I started saving $100 a week two years ago and have never looked back.

7. Watch a sunset How often are you rushing through life feeling like you’re on a treadmill running to the next work meeting, appointment, school event or errand? Happiness lies in enjoying the moments of our life and unless you stop long enough to enjoy those moments, life will pass you by and happiness will elude you. Enjoy the ending of a day by sitting down and watching the setting of the sun. It’s a soulful way to slow down and reconnect you to the earth. I love going to the Mount and watching the sunset over the Kaimais. It’s a peaceful time of day to revere the beauty and wonder of this world.

8. Say no to something or someone The more successful you become as a businesswoman, the more you’ll need to say no to things. As more opportunities, ideas and clients come your way, you must become comfortable with checking in with yourself to see if they are the right fit for you, and then saying no thanks to anything that does not align with your values or your vision. Creating and honouring your own boundaries is vital as a woman. I have introduced a practice each fortnight of saying no to something or someone as a way to create more space in my life for what I truly want.

Move your body Whether it’s the gym, yoga, karate or mountain biking, commit to a fitness programme that suits your body and lifestyle. Start small, keep it achievable and do something every day or every other day. Exercise creates chemical responses in the brain, which leads to both temporary and long term mental health benefits. Exercising balances your emotions and helps you think clearer. I love trail running and walking and I make sure I get out in nature at least twice a week.

10. Set a limit to what you buy You don’t need that new dress or electronic gismo. You’ll experience such freedom from saying no to buying something, plus you’ll be helping create financial freedom for yourself and your family. This year I’ve chosen to only buy one piece of clothing/footwear a month. It’s meant I’m now looking forward to purchasing that one item, I value it when I buy it and I’m saving money and time by not shopping more often.

11. Add a smoothie to your day Set yourself up for good health with a wholesome glass of goodness. Raw food nourishes your mind, body and soul and is easy to prepare if you have the right ingredients at home. I start my day with a green smoothie and have a delicious banana nut smoothie for afternoon tea. My energy is off the charts and my mental clarity allows me to create, manage and lead a nationwide company with zest.

12. Take yourself on a playdate We’ve all gotten so serious about life. It’s time to get in touch with your inner child. She’s the creative, curious, playful part of you that sometimes doesn’t get much air time in a world dominated by business, family and schedules. Each fortnight I take myself on a playdate, just for me, just for fun. It could be going to an afternoon movie, going to my favourite café or visiting an old friend. It’s about prioritising and nourishing yourself and getting back in touch with your inner child — she’s an asset in life and business.

I got to know Mamaternity when I was newly pregnant with my second baby and new to the community. I came in looking for a midwife and then became involved with the coffee groups, which was an awesome way to make friends — most of whom I am still friends with today. My passion is families and empowering them to make the best choices for themselves. Kia Ora, my name is Corrinne. I am a wife and mother to three beautiful girls. I have been the Palmerston North coordinator coming up five years. I have always held pregnancy and parenting in high regard, and respect the fact that the parenting journey is one of the hardest but enjoyable times in any person’s life, and to be a part of an organisation that shares this passion is exciting. Being involved with Mamaternity, I have had the pleasure of helping many families. I have watched babies grow and reach milestones and families expand. I truly believe that we offer a fantastic service for our community and I am proud to be a part of it. Mamaternity is a community based organisation offering quality, free, confidential advice and support throughout the childbearing years. Our resource centre in Feilding opened in 2005 and in Palmerston North in 2007. Our centres provide a relaxed environment offering free antenatal classes, new parent support, breastfeeding support and coffee groups. We are partially funded by the DHB, seek funding through grants and are always looking for different fundraising opportunities to help our organisation to grow. We are supported by a very motivated Board and amazing volunteers who all help us make a difference in our communities.

THE PARENTING PLACE My name is Joelle Pretorius. I am a mum to Luke (8) and Cherise (7). I’ve lived in NZ with my husband for 11 years. Most of us mums understand principles of investing and expecting a return. I want to fill my children’s memory banks with wonderful family memories so I’m intentionally investing in my family. I’m passionate about The Parenting Place as they provide so many wonderful tools and resources to equip me in my parenting journey, helping me invest in my family and it’s going to pay dividends for the future. WHEN WE WALK TO THE EDGE OF ALL THE LIGHT

“The seductive nature of the modern world allows us as human beings to believe we are in charge. In today’s world we think we are in charge. Technological advances and intellectual knowledge we continue to acclaim, leaves us with the sense that we are in control and that there is enough time to achieve what it is we want to achieve. We become complacent about the need to take care of ourselves always something more to do. Some of this is driven by our desire to save the world, others driven by the desire we have to reach the many goals we have set ourselves - many of them superficial. The simple reality is that we are not in charge and that moment of realisation comes to us when we learn of the fragility of the human spirit. For some, that lesson comes unexpectedly and hard. Late last year I slowly became unwell. The stress of the lifestyle I was living, the demands I made of myself, the demands other people made of me and expected to meet became too great and as 2014 closed I was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer that had spread to my liver. No treatment, no cure, only palliative care. I’d waited too long to look after myself and my body broke. To say that it was and is a shock is a major understatement and as I look at the amazing family and group of friends I’m surrounded with as I now travel a different journey warms my heart. At the same time, there are feelings of trepidation about what lies ahead.

I’m now focused on the moments of magic that are appearing in front of me: The laughter of my grandchildren; a smile of a friend attempting to walk this journey with me and the pure beauty and strength of my adult children as they battle their anger, grief and sadness at what is happening to their beloved mother. My wish is that others will learn to stop before I did, to take into account the limitations of their physical bodies and to take the time to listen to the yearnings of their soul. I was inspired to start my own business as photography was something I always loved and I decided it was time to chase my dreams. Etta Images is all about beautiful Portrait Photography. My family portraits capture those special moments shared between family members. Moments that are then beautifully printed and displayed in homes for the family and future generations to enjoy. What I love about running my own business is that I’m totally responsible for providing the best customer service I can. I liaise with clients from the first point of contact through to the follow up, to check that their images are all that they dreamed of. I know it is in my hands to create a really happy client, and I love this challenge. Another tough challenge was to gain my NZIPP (New Zealand Institute of Professional Photographers) Qualification. A lot of my work was initially focused on the emotional side of photography, and I really needed to focus on improvements to the technical side to bring this up to the same level to become qualified. The process of becoming qualified taught me that I needed to ask for help. You don’t know what you don’t know. My favourite word is “tranquilo”, which is to be calm/take it easy, in Spanish. I use it with my five year old son, and myself! My growth experienced from Venus has been both personal and business. Being part of a really supportive group of women, who are all there to help each other, is excellent for growing your own confidence and drive to succeed. And the contacts made and referrals passed on has led me to gain new and interesting clients. Success to me is creating a business that I love and work that I want to go to each day. It’s about creating a product that is a thing of beauty that my clients treasure. It’s having the freedom to work around the hours of my family, so I can have the time to be the mum and wife I want to be. My advice to my early self would be that its going to take a while, so keep enjoying the now as you are building up to the future. I mostly do this, but I forget a little when under pressure, hence my mantra “tranquilo”.

I had started my own business out of frustration from not getting more responsibilities in my previous job. The biggest challenge has been staying focused on tasks while settling in my three boys in a new environment as they didn’t speak a word of English when we arrived. We did very well I think. In an airplane they always tell you to put your own mask on first before helping another. And I live by that. I am not selfish or self-centred, I simply believe that to contribute and be positive to those people around you, you must be happy and healthy yourself. Being in Venus has helped me to be less impatient. I see a lot of great women that are reaping the rewards of their hard work. It shows that effort does pay off in the end, you just have to keep at it. Success to me is providing excellent service that makes a difference in people’s lives. It is being recognized as an expert in your field. And it’s about being happy to go to work in the morning.

If a parent dies as a result of an accident, the surviving parent and their children are looked after until the child reaches the age of 18 years. It is a huge benefit to New Zealanders and one we often take for granted.

Remembering that ACC only covers accidents, we encourage a full review of business owner’s risk. They are already paying the levies on an annual basis, and this only covers accidents.

ACC came into force in the 1974, covering workers and non workers with the medical and financial resources to get them back on their feet. We pay our levies for this service through our personal tax, or if self-employed, business tax and through a portion of car registration.

1. What niche have you chosen for your business? Equine law, being an equestrian enthusiast, I have a personal interest in this field of law. I am also very passionate and have an industry understanding on this topic. 2. How did you choose this niche and why do you feel it is important to niche a business in today’s market? As a solicitor I feel it is important to know your community and also be aware of what is happening in the market. Whether it is buying or selling a house or business or entering into a partnership agreement regarding your valuable equine. New Zealand equine sport is growing and we are on the map with our professional riders. These riders are inspiring a lot of upcoming young riders in various pony clubs, dressage clubs and eventing clubs all over New Zealand. The equine community relies often on informal agreements or a hand shake, exposing both the parties to risk. Like any area of law, people need to protect themselves before any issues arise. 3. What has become possible since you’ve chosen this niche? The equine industry is growing, especially if Horse of the Year and Equidays are anything to go by. Both of these events combined brought in millions of dollars to the New Zealand economy in 2014. Anything is possible from here!!

1. What niche have you chosen for your business? Linkedin training for busy, dynamic, proactive and focussed professionals. 2. Why have you chosen this niche for your business? Because these people get things done and they’re a pleasure to work with! 3. How did you choose this niche? It chose me. These are the types of clients I seem to attract into my business; the ones I have the most fun with and who seem to bring out the best in both of us. 4. Why do you feel it’s important to niche a business in today’s market? It helps maintain focus, greater opportunity to specialise, increased opportunity to position yourself as the go-to woman in your niche. You get to really know and understand your ideal client (avatar). And most importantly it allows you to stand out from the crowd: to be Seth Godin’s Purple Cow. I’m a strong ideas person, which gets me into trouble because I ‘wander’. I stay focussed on my niche by mentally imagining it as a tunnel that’s just 1mm wide x infinitely long — there’s no wiggle room. 5. What has become possible since you’ve chosen this niche? Paradoxically, by giving myself no wiggle room in a narrow market, it has created infinite freedom and amazing psychological power. The freedom to say “no” because something falls outside my area of expertise.

We also work with athletes, again you have to perform at an optimum level and elite athletes the world over are incorporating yoga into their training programmes. 2. How did you choose this niche? We definitely saw a gap in the Wellington market. Our two main competitors are in the more ‘alternative’ end of town, which is a good 15–20 minute walk from the CBD. I deliberately looked for a building that was in the heart of the CBD and accessible for most to get to a lunchtime class with no more than a 5 minute walk. The building I found was perfectly located and therefore removed the excuse of ‘no time to get there’. 3. Why do you feel it’s important to niche a business in today’s market? Niching your market is vital today. It is tempting to try to throw your marketing net out and capture anyone and everyone The problem with this is that you are ‘shooting blind’. With our marketing we imagine we are talking to just one person, having identified the needs of our target market, we now speak directly to those needs. 3. What has become possible since you’ve chosen this niche? Since opening the studio in November, our numbers are building, people talk and our reputation is growing. Word of mouth really is your best advertisement, as our members go back to their respective offices, they share the experience they have and the benefits they receive from the service we provide.

What niche have you chosen for your business? Customised corporate theatre for events, conferences, business meetings, team building exercises and Christmas parties as well as providing actors for recruitment in the education, medical and hospitality areas. 2. How did you choose this niche? It was a natural progression from drama teaching in schools to running a performing arts school to creating one-off events for corporates. This side of the business is really taking off and murder mystery nights are very popular. In some ways I feel that this niche chose us as the creative juices are overflowing with ideas! 3. Why do you feel it’s important to niche a business in today’s market? You are attractive to the market because you are unique. We hear our clients say a lot — ‘We just want something different this year’. Everyone is looking for their point of difference and what we can offer them is an opportunity to showcase their own business to their clients and supporters in a way that they could not have imagined. 4. What has become possible since you’ve chosen this niche? Being creative is now part of everyday, whether it be with the young people we are working with, the local engineering firm looking for a new idea for their cocktail party launch or the admin team sitting around dreaming up new murder mystery characters. We never stop learning. We are surrounding ourselves with other successful people in business who are helping us to grow from being paid staff members at a government run school to making our own decisions about content, timelines and delivery. We have also formed a team of fantastic like-minded writers, directors and actors who we know we can draw on to create events with long lasting memories for all who attend.

WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT RUNNING YOUR OWN BUSINESS? I love the challenge of running a viable business that keeps growing. I love networking and connecting with other companies and looking at how we can partner together to improve or enhance both companies.

WHAT HAVE BEEN SOME OF YOUR BIGGEST CHALLENGES? My biggest challenge has been the growth and cash flow of the business. When your company grows so do your overheads, and keeping this in balance is a challenge. My second biggest challenge is assessing how much stock and staffing levels we need during the peak periods of Christmas, Valentine’s Day and Mother’s Day.

WHAT LESSONS HAVE YOU LEARNED ALONG THE WAY? My biggest lesson has been in managing my cash flow. I now have an amazing accountant who comes into my office every month. We look at bank reconciliations, stock control and management reporting. You need to be all over your financials to know what’s really going on in your business. One thing I have learnt out of the Venus Business Teams, which has taken this to the next level, is to map out sales forecasts for the year ahead. I have done this along with putting new sales targets in place and I could see our profit going forward if we hit our goals (which we did). I have this in my Playbook and look at this daily which gives me such inspiration.

WHAT GROWTH HAVE YOU EXPERIENCED BY BEING IN VENUS? I joined Venus when the business was two years old. Edible Blooms has grown 500% in this time. We don’t track the direct business from Venus but word of mouth is our 3rd top source of new and repeat business. I have worked with so many people in Venus. I have donated a lot of products to members and I have received just as much if not more from the network.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO MEMBERS TO HELP THEM SUCCEED IN VENUS? Give. It is like everything, the more you put in the more you get out. When I say give I’m meaning asking yourself how can you help a member and what can you do to work together to grow each other’s business. I never go to a meeting thinking ‘What am I going to come away with out of this?’ or ‘How much money am I going to make?’ I ask how can I help, give and contribute first.

WHY DID YOU JOIN A VENUS BUSINESS TEAM? I was looking to start some form of mentoring and coaching. I was looking for someone to keep me accountable, but hadn’t really looked very hard. Vanessa Davey, Auckland Business Team Leader, inspired me from when I first met her. I thought ‘What have I got to lose?’ The cost is low compared to a coach, so I jumped in. I haven’t looked back — I love it. It’s like a mastermind group that is inspiring, plus last year I smashed all of my goals.

WHAT VALUE ARE YOU GETTING FROM BEING PART OF A VENUS BUSINESS TEAM? What I love about the business team are the ideas that flow around the table, the accountability and the inspiration. FEIJOA CHOCOLATE SMOOTHIE BOWL Serves two

RECIPE 2 frozen bananas 5 fresh or frozen feijoas 1 dessertspoon of 100% organic maple syrup (optional) 2 tablespoons of coconut dairy free yoghurt 1 tablespoon of cacao powder METHOD

2 fresh feijoas, diced 2 tablespoons of coconut thread 1 tablespoon of cacao nibs 1 tablespoon of pistachios, chopped

TIPS

Process the first four ingredients together until well blended. Divide the mixture in half and blend the cacao powder into one half.

I always make sure that I have peeled, frozen bananas on hand in the freezer, great for making dairy free ice cream, smoothies and smoothie bowl.

In two bowls add half the feijoa banana mixture and half the feijoa, banana, cacao mixture.

I freeze seasonal fruit pulp in smoothie portions in snap lock bags. For feijoas I scoop out 4 - 5 depending on size and place in the sandwhich size bags.

Decorate the top with the fresh feijoa, cacao nibs, coconut thread and pistachios. ABOUT I am the graphic designer for Venus and a food stylist/ photographer. These recipes are created exclusively for Venus Magazine, Vanessa and I actually got to enjoy them. Sheryl Nicholson

The coconut yoghurt in this recipe is dairy free, probiotic and very creamy. It’s available from any good health or organics store and is totally addictive! I have used the Raglan Coconut Yoghurt. Smoothie bowls are thicker in consistency to a standard smoothie drink and are like having pudding for breakfast. Use any toppings that you like such as chopped dates, cranberries, apricots, almonds, pecans and any seasonal fresh fruit. Add super food powders to your smoothie bowl for an extra boost.


POACHED EGG WITH ZOODLES AND AVOCADO SAUCE Serves two

RECIPE 2 free range, organic eggs 1 very ripe avocado 2 tomatoes 1 zucchini Juice of ½ a lemon 1 small handful of fresh coriander

1 cup of rocket leaves 1 tablespoon of olive oil 1 small knob of butter 1 clove of garlic, minced Microgreens (for garnish) Salt and pepper

METHOD

Blitz the avocado, lemon juice, coriander and some salt and pepper together with a stick blender to make a thick, yummy sauce.

The avocado sauce in this recipe is a great way to use up very ripe avocados. Use any other herbs such as basil or parsley or even rocket instead of coriander. The lemon juice not only adds to the flavour but will keep it nice and green in the fridge for a couple of days.

Using a madoline slicer or spiralizer make zoodles out of the zucchini. Heat the olive oil over a medium heat in a frypan. Add the tomato halves and brown on each side. Remove from pan and set aside. Add the butter to the pan, saute the garlic for a few seconds and then add the zoodles and quickly saute them for one minute. Poach your eggs in a pot of boiling water. When lemons are in abundance I squeeze large quantities of them and freeze the juice in ice cube trays then transfer them to snap lock bags for easy freezer storage. Use them in your daily lemon water, recipes etc.

I’ve learned over the past seven years what it takes to grow a thriving business. A key part is having specific, measurable goals, the commitment to actively work towards them and a clear plan to guide you each week to achieve them. The same is true if you want to thrive in your Venus Networking Group. I have also learned through both our Venus Business Teams and our Sassy Business Training Programme the power of clarity of intentions and accountability to achieve business growth. I have created a ‘FLOW Form’ fortnightly log of work form, to support you to maximise your investment of time and money into networking through Venus. I’ve included a section for your own business, where you can plan your business growth through goals and managing your performance. YOUR VENUS NETWORKING GROUP This section allows you to focus on your networking group this coming fortnight. (RECEIVE) YOUR 3 MONTH GOAL – WHAT DO YOU WANT TO GET FROM YOUR GROUP? How do you know if you’re getting what you want through Venus, if you’re not clear what the outcome you want to achieve is? This section asks you to get very specific about one thing you would like to receive from your group members in the next three months. Make sure your goal is measurable, specific and realistic. This goal stays the same on every fortnightly form for three months. E.g. mine is to sign up four new Business Team Members. (GIVE) WHAT DO YOU NEED TO DO TO MAKE SURE THIS WILL HAPPEN? What do you need to take action on or make sure you do so your group helps you achieve your goal above? These actions stay the same on every form for three months. E.g. mine is: • Give at least two proactive referrals every fortnight and RAVE at least once a fortnight • To share clearly to my group the benefits and results already achieved by current biz team members RAVE BOOKED IN THIS FORTNIGHT To get the most value from your membership you need to be meeting members on a one-on-one basis. Follow the Venus RAVE form to maximise these opportunities. I complete a RAVE form in my member’s handbook at each RAVE, to have a reference for future. E.g. Steph from Indulge boutique — going for a walking RAVE around the Mount 9.30am. PROACTIVE REFERRAL THIS FORTNIGHT Who are you going to actively connect, introduce or refer in your Venus group? If you wait to be asked to share a referral ‘Do you know a great hairdresser?’ you’ll be waiting a while. Five per cent of the time you get asked, which leaves 95% of the time you need to be PROACTIVE with creating referrals.

E.g. introduce our newest member Adrienne, a property valuer to my girlfriend who is a property investor with a few dozen homes. Remember to make them specific and measurable. E.g. Sign up Jayne to the business team. ACTION STEPS What steps do you need to take to achieve the goals this fortnight? E.g. organise a meeting to talk about her business goals, follow up with further information and an example of one of our training modules, call her to follow up in a week to see if keen to join. I WILL CONTINUE If you want to grow your business you need to grow yourself. This section is a mini performance management process allowing you to continually develop and grow. The first question asks you what is working well that you’ll continue doing in your business. E.g. chunk my week, focus my time in two hour blocks. I WILL STOP What is something that is no longer working or that you need to say no to? E.g. working both days of the weekend, will have one off I WILL START What could you start doing that could work really well for you or your business? E.g. create and use monthly management reports for each of my business managers. WIN I WILL BE CELEBRATING IN TWO WEEKS This section allows you to get clear on what you want to create in your fortnight. It’s about being future grateful expressing gratitude for something that will happen in the future. This is your opportunity to put energy into what you want fortnightly, by asking yourself what is the one win you would like to celebrate in a fortnight’s time. E.g. a new team member on board my Tauranga Business Team — whoop whoop! I encourage you to print out and complete this form after every fortnightly Venus meeting. This is a powerful tool to support you to thrive in Venus and in your own business.
