The LIFE of

Doris Agatha

Walker The phenomenal Doris Agatha Walker, affectionately known as “Sis”, was born January 9, 1919 in Content Gap, St. Andrew, Jamaica. It was there that she grew and thrived with her mother, Muriel Wray (Ta); her step-father, Joseph Wray Sr. (Papa) along with her six (6) siblings: Leonard, Joseph, Linvol, Victoria aka Ceta, Vaselle and Violet, aka Cherry. Doris was always very playful, industrious and independent since childhood. She received her elementary education at Content Gap Public School.

Doris later moved from Content Gap to Kingston, then Edgewater, then Eltham Park, and finally to Cumberland, Portmore. Doris was married to the late Eric Walker; the proud mother of nine children: Leslie, Edith (aka Lena), Keith, Monica, Ezron, Llorna, Lillie (aka Madge), Patricia (aka Fay), and Winston; who made her the grandmother and great-grandmother to 22 grand and 25 great-grandchildren. She loved her family: her siblings, cousins, nephews and nieces, children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. But she also loved her extended family: her neighbours and friends. Sis loved people. She loved to cook and she was a great cook; she loved cooking Sunday dinners for her family and anyone who dropped by. Some of her favorite dishes to cook were: rice and peas, curried chicken, oxtail, curried goat and fish.

She was a wonderful baker as well; we can still taste and long for the toto from back in the day.

Although Sis moved to the city, she always sent baskets filled with food back to Ta and Papa for our home filled with children and grandchildren. Her occupation was a seller in the market. The truck would arrive at our gate and as children we would run to the gate and could not wait for the baskets to be opened. We were never disappointed because among the real food were our favorite sweeties, paradise plums and sweet bulla cakes. Sis visited Content Gap often and as children we ran to greet her. She hugged us tightly, and with a huge smile on her face, she looked into our eyes and said, “How you du mi baby, how yu do mi darling? “ Sis loved to sing and she laughed often. She often sang the song “Salvation Story Was Telling All About…” She loved God and often spoke about the love of God and how good He has been to her. She taught us to pray and give thanks to God for his goodness toward us. She was a virtuous woman of great faith.

We don’t recall Sis being sick over the years. She never complained. Two of her sons, namely Ezron and Keith, predeceased her, and she never complained.

She maintained contact with her family members and friends with diligent letter writing in the early days until the arrival of the telephone. When friends and family visited from abroad, they would return with fried fish, mangoes and breadfruit. Sis would be the recipient of shoes, and more shoes, and dresses and hats. And she loved to get dressed up.

We were excited when she became a centenarian. We were so thankful that she was fully ambulatory and did not present with any cognitive impairment.

She remembered everything and everyone. We celebrated her gift from God of 102 plus years. We always celebrated her life and she knew she was loved.

Things changed May 2021. Sis got sick; she was no longer doing well and on May 17, 2021, Doris, our Sis, took her final breath in her sleep and remained asleep. Sleep on sweet Sis, sleep on. We are looking forward to the day when the trumpet of God shall sound, and the dead in Christ shall rise. Until then, take you rest sweet Sis, take your rest. We will meet again on that great day when our heavenly Father welcomes all His children home. We miss you dearly, we will love and keep you in our hearts forever. Take your rest, Doris. well done!

Children’s Tribute

It is often said that a mother’s love knows no bounds. Never have these words been more true than when one describes the love, dedication and affection that our mother, Doris Agatha Walker, affectionately called Sis, showed to all her children. Our mother was a phenomenal woman.

Our mother was a strong woman. Our mother was as a loving, caring and nurturing woman. Our mother was a mighty woman of God, who passed on the ways and teachings of the Lord to her children, grand children and great-grand-children. Sis lived her life with a passion for love and acceptance of all people. She would often say, “You must forgive to be forgiven and a soft answer turneth away wrath”. We are so grateful to have had her as such an incredible example of kindness, honesty, and strength. We have with us her lessons, her memories and most of all her teachings. Teachings that will undoubtedly be passed on to future generations.We thank the Lord for blessing us with a mother like Sis. We will miss her but, we will always cherish her memories.

We were graced with the touch of love from our beloved Doris Walker, who raised more than one generation with primary education being her highest level of formal schooling from a church school in St. Peters, rural St. Andrew. The charisma of her sweet heart captured our soul in peace. Grandma lived a full life from growing up in Content Gap as a child to living in the beautiful parish of St. Catherine. Each of us as grandchildren will agree that Doris lived a life of grace, loving Jesus , following His will; engaging in morning and evening devotions, and humming her songs throughout the day. So walk good, be good and remember Jesus soon return. “Joy cometh in the morning”. Peace be with you. Amen.

The simple pleasures of hearing your voice will be missed and never forgotten. Though it may seem short, God gave us all the privilege of meeting you and to witness your love and strength. She was the eldest of seven children and with this came great responsibility. She embraced us as her own children and treated us well.

Our sister was, to us, a person who had been where we have been, and someone we could call when things were’nt right. She was more than family or SISTER; she was our forever friend. Every day you are unseen and unheard you remain very near. We love and miss you dearly. Sleep on big SISTER. See you soon.

Nieces and Nephews Tribute

Doris Walker, Sis as we all affectionately called her, was indeed a woman of God. And what was even more remarkable, and even touching was how a woman with little means shared so much with so many of us. Her achieving the status of being called a centenarian, is an indication of receiving special blessings of the Lord. As we conversed and shared reflections about our aunt, the recurring attributes centered around her warmth, love, kindness and hospitality. She so easily embodied the fruit of the Spirit found in Eph. 5:22-23 ‘Love, Joy, peace, patience, goodness, kindness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control”. Today, we feel a sense of pride and are truly blessed as nieces and nephews to have had an aunt whose Christian virtues were worth emulating. Undoubtedly, Sis was one who purposefully guarded the wholesome principles of Christian ethics; she was a woman of bountiful love, whole-hearted kindness, demonstratable faithfulness and was fulsomely obedient to the prescriptive commandments of our Lord and Savior. We will fondly remember her love and that she saw us not as nieces and nephews but as her one pickney, “one daughter” and “one son” and treated us equally.

Cumberland Tribute

“Life is a journey, not a home. It is a road and not a city of habitation”.

We all know that the longer the road of life, the more magnanimous is considered our Maker’s blessing.

How many of us can say they knew and lived next door to a centenarian? Without hesitation I can answer “I do” because Mrs. Doris A. Walker – Grandma as we affectionately called her - was MY neighbour and dear friend who passed at age one hundred and two plus years. It was through God’s infinite wisdom and grace that Grandma was privileged to have experienced this blessing beyond the three score and ten years allotted to each mortal.

Rest well my neighbour and friend. Rest well in the arms of your Maker.

Eltham Tribute

Sis Walker, Sis, Auntie Sissy, Grandma are just few of the names you would hear the different generations of children and adults of the Eltham Park Community refer to the late Mrs Doris Walker.

Her warmth and love is practically legendary because she shared it with everyone she came across. For years she spread her love to every person she laid eyes on who walked by the gate or visited/attended church, whether she knew you or not. She would offer a comforting word, a meal or even just a scripture to ease your troubles. Anyone who had the pleasure to be in her presence − even for a minute − will remark on how sweet this beautiful, vibrant, perpetually smiling purple-haired lady was. Her strength, both physically and emotionally, were immeasurable and amazing. She would be there for everyone at any given time. She lived a long and beautiful life. One can only hope to live as long as she did. She has gone on before us but her memories will live on in each of our hearts everyday. Sleep well Sissy!
