Some of the reasons why gantry cranes are more popular than overhead cranes are as follows: 1. The high cost of Long Travel (LT) Girders, which are required when utilizing an Overhead Crane but are not required when employing a Gantry Crane.

2. The cost of the additional columns required to support the Long Travel (LT) Girders.

3. Civil foundation prices for Columns (for Overhead Cranes) are significantly higher than civil foundation rates for Goliath Crane rails (in the case of Goliath cranes).
