Physical activity guidelines New Canadian Physical Activity Guidelines for children, youth, adults and older adults were released January 2011. The easy-to-understand guidelines were developed to help Canadians achieve the daily physical activity required to live a healthy, active life. Visit www.csep.ca/guidelines for more information. For children–5 to 11 years For health benefits, children aged 5 to 11 years should accumulate at least 60 minutes of moderate- to vigorous-intensity physical activity daily. This should include: • Vigorous-intensity activities at least three days per week. • Activities that strengthen muscle and bone at least three days per week. • More daily physical activity provides greater health benefits. Moderate-intensity physical activities will cause children to sweat a little and to breathe harder. Activities like: • Bike riding • Playground activities Vigorous-intensity physical activities will cause children to sweat and be ‘out of breath’. Activities like:

• Running • Swimming Being active for at least 60 minutes daily can help children: • Improve their health • Do better in school • Improve their fitness • Grow stronger • Have fun playing with friends • Feel happier • Maintain a healthy body weight • Improve their self-confidence • Learn new skills Parents and caregivers can help to plan their child’s daily activity. Kids can: • Play tag–or freeze-tag! • Go to the playground after school. • Walk, bike, rollerblade or skateboard to school. • Play an active game at recess. • Go sledding in the park on the weekend. • Go “puddle hopping” on a rainy day. Message from the editor With the summer’s heat wave still going strong, it may seem to soon to think about fall. Therefore, we have been thinking about it for you. In this issue of the Activity and Events Guide you will find a great selection of local events to take you through August and all the way into November. The Rotary of Guelph’s annual Ribfest closes out the summer, and downtown’s Jazz Festival is a great way to kick-off September, followed by Eden Mills Writers’ Festival. In October, check out a variety of local artists during the Guelph Studio Tour, or look into those home renovations during the Guelph Fall Home and Leisure Show. Get inspired for the festive season with Fair November at the University of Guelph and the Santa Claus Parade in Downtown Guelph. Now is the time to register children for after school programs, organized sports, dance and more. Our advertisers provide you with many options to choose from. Consider taking an adult workshop–we have included a wide variety of interesting topics available at the Arboretum, plus the Evergreen Centre provides a long list of general interest courses for older adults. A new federal grant will ultimately help the University of Guelph attract hundreds more Ontario high school students and teachers for one of its most popular youth science outreach programs. U of G will receive a three-year $12,500 grant for its annual Science Olympics from the PromoScience program of the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC). The funding was recently announced by Keith Ashfield, minister of fisheries and oceans, on behalf of Gary Goodyear, minister of state for science and technology. The NSERC PromoScience program funds organizations which promote hands-on learning of science and engineering, mathematics and technology, among young Canadians. In total, $2.9 million was allocated to 58 organizations including universities, non-governmental organizations, museums and science centres. “Our government wants to encourage more young people to explore an education or career in science and engineering in order to keep Canada’s economy growing and creating jobs in the future,” said Ashfield. “This program will give youth in communities across the country an opportunity to discover the

benefits of these fields.” “As a daylong campus-wide competition, Guelph’s Science Olympics uses fun and games to turn teens onto science,” said Bonnie Lasby, recruitment officer for the College of Physical and Engineering Science (CPES). Begun at Guelph in 2009, Science Olympics attracts hundreds of high school students each year to compete in more than 20 learning activities in such topics as human anatomy, veterinary science, nanoscience, animal and plant sciences, chemistry, math, engineering and physics. This past spring, about 610 teens and 40 teachers from high schools between Windsor and Richmond Hill, took part. Lasby hopes to attract more than 700 people next year and up to 1,000 within three years. Science Olympics is run by about 150 volunteers from CPES, the College of Biological Science, the Ontario Agricultural College, the Ontario Veterinary College, the College of Social and Applied Human Sciences, and the University of Guelph Library Learning Commons. The program currently costs about $10,000 to run and is funded by student registrations, corporate sponsors and U of G colleges.

Moksha hot yoga is a unique yoga series that combines the precision of therapeutic yoga and the foundations of traditional yoga in a specially heated room. The series is a cardiovascular workout that strengthens, tones and loosens the muscles, while detoxifying the body, calming the mind and lowering stress. Moksha Yoga Guelph, located on Norfolk Street in downtown Guelph, offers yoga classes, therapeutic bodywork, rejuvenating treatments, and workshops. Owner and studio director Kelly Romanick

completed the Moksha Yoga Teacher Training Course in 2003 and opened the downtown location in May of 2009. She has also studied craniosacral therapy, thai massage, hotstone massage, ayurvedic and rejuvenating therapies, hot yoga, yin yoga, and restorative yoga. Each of the eight certified instructors at Moksha Yoga Guelph bring their own unique experience and style to the basic structure that is fundamental to the Moksha practice. 14th annual Ribfest

It’s Ribfest 2011 and you’re invited. August 26, 27, and 28, 2011 marks the 14th year that Riverside Park becomes known as Ribberside Park and features the aroma of barbequed ribs and the sound of some of the best entertainment around. Presented by the Rotary Club of Guelph Trillium, Ribfest is a family event. Sample world-class ribs, visit the other food vendors, enjoy your favourite beverage, take your kids to the children’s activity centre, view classic cars, and listen to great almost non-stop entertainment.

The Habitat Wellington Women Build recently hosted a fundraising BBQ at the Riverside Park Concert Shell. The event included live music, children’s entertainment, local vendors for shopping, and plenty of other activities, plus a silent auction. Approximately 300 visitors, vendors and volunteers made the day a success. The event, entirely volunteer driven, will allow all the funds to go to help in building the Women Build home on 439 York Rd. While the complete results are still being calculated, almost $2000 was raised on the silent auction alone. A special thank you to the sponsors who made this happen: RBC, Harvey’s, Marble Slab Creamery, Winmar and Allstate as well as all the musicians and vendors.

Moparfest August 20-21 8am to 4pm Canada’s largest Mopar car show is celebrating its 32nd year. Great things happening at River Run Centre With the release of River Run Centre’s 20112012 season, come exciting new experiences for patrons. As always, the new season offers a wide range of music, theatre, comedy, dance, and plenty of shows for the whole family. This year Guelph’s performance centre introduces a new offering, the RBC Classical Arts and Dance Series. This five-show series introduces opera to River Run’s line-up for the first time, with two very popular productions–Mozart’s Don Giovanni and The Magic Flute. “We’ve expanded our programming to include some new larger scale productions,” says Ella Pauls, Manager of Development and Communications for River Run Centre. Besides opera, audiences can experience a richly varied performance of classical and contemporary ballet as well as a colourful and dazzling traditional Spanish Dance production. In the Meridian Studio Series, audiences will

be thrilled by the highly accomplished and engaging musical duo, Guy Few and Nadina Mackie Jackson. “It is classical music presented in a style that should appeal to many,” says Pauls. Also within the series, I, Claudia and Goodness, are both strong performances, which continue to open to rave reviews. New offerings include the outstanding choir productions from the Harlem Gospel Choir and Men of the Deeps, Canada’s only coal miners choir. Other big names to the stage include Ron Sexsmith, Holly Cole, Steven Page, and three of today’s most popular country music stars, Deric Ruttan, Aaron Lines and Dean Brody. River Run Centre’s organizers are excited this year to bring local flavour to the line-up with the well-known Funky Mamas “The quality of their work is outstanding and we are thrilled to offer amazing talent from within our community,” remarks Pauls. Children can also look forward

to the escapades of The Backyardigans, on stage in October. “Our goal is to offer performance for every taste, price point, and age, thereby being accessible to everyone in the community,” says Pauls. “This year we look forward to celebrating Canadian performers, International productions and local talent from right here at home.” For the first time, this summer River Run Centre is offering deep discount early bird package pricing. Choose any four shows from the seven different series before August 31, 2011 and receive 30% off. After August 31, the regular bulk buy price will be in effect at 20% off. Contact the River Run box office at 519-763-3000 or visit www.riverrun.ca. River Run Centre benefits from the dedication and generosity of numerous volunteers.
