Established in 1953, the Guelph & District Human Resources Professionals Association (GDHRPA) was created to promote the value of people in achieving business goals that result in organizational success. With just over 500 professionals and students from all sectors, including retail, manufacturing, health care, and financial, GDHRPA provides resources and education to Human Resources Professionals within Guelph and the surrounding area. The GDHRPA recently announced the recipients of its fourth annual Employer of Distinction Awards. “The Awards were developed out of a desire to promote the importance of Human Resource Management in business success, and to offer the opportunity for both the community and Chapter members to learn from best practices that we know are happening right here in the area–some of which are driven by the professionals

within the GDHRPA,” says Melanie Hill, GDHRPA Employer of Distinction Committee Chair. “We wanted to demonstrate how positive human resource management practices can have a real impact on business outcomes.” Every January, two businesses are awarded in the categories of: an employer with less than 200 employees, and an employer with 200 or more employees. Business must show how their human resources initiatives have been implemented; the measurable impact made on business indicators such as goals, objectives, continuous improvement, and customer satisfaction; and the resulting measurement of employee workplace satisfaction through recruitment, retention, engagement, and performance. “There are so many examples of HR practices a business could implement to make them an outstanding employer,” says Erin Murray,

GDHRPA Employer of Distinction Committee Member. “They are often the little things like pot luck lunches, thank you cards and flexible hours, or it can be the large scale things like innovative compensation plans, and robust health, safety and wellness programs. Ultimately, it is the ongoing practice of valuing employees and this can happen on a daily basis.” The 2012 Employer of Distinction recipient in the large employer category is NGF Canada Ltd., and Hospice Wellington was recognized in the small employer category. Both organizations are commended for their person-centered approach, and fostering environments that encourage employee health and wellness, communication, flexibility and support–resulting in an engaged workforce that has allowed these organizations to achieve significant success in their operational and organizational goals.

by Heather Grummett

Representing the first not-for-profit in the region to win the award, HR practices at Hospice Wellington have increased employee engagement and commitment to the organization. Staff, volunteers and the Board of Directors have supported the development of the organization over the past 31years. “I cannot tell you how thrilled we are to win this award and how much it means to us to recognize the hard work we have all put in to make our organization an exceptional place to work and volunteer,” says Rosslyn Bentley, Executive Director at Hospice Wellington. Hospice Wellington has very low absence rates, less than 2% compared to a healthcare comparable industry standard of 12%. There have been no workplace injuries since opening in May 2010. Hospice Wellington has one of the very highest rates of productivity – cont’d on pg 7

Sleeman Breweries receives $141,555 in rebates for energy efficiency efforts submitted by Guelph Hydro Electric Systems Inc.

Sleeman Breweries Limited is among 80 local businesses that have taken advantage of the Ontario Power Authority’s (OPA) Retrofit Program, offered by Guelph Hydro Electric Systems Inc. that provides rebates of up to 50 per cent for energy efficiency upgrades. After determining features of its facility that could benefit from an energy efficiency upgrade, Sleeman Breweries took on its first retrofit project. The local brewery wanted to purchase a back-up air compressor to replace an existing system that was prone to failing. An analysis revealed that an oversized compressor was causing many of the problems. The existing system was removed and replaced with two smaller 75-horsepower compressors. A new 3,000-gallon tank, flow control valve, and cycling refrigerant dryer were also installed.

For its second retrofit project, Sleeman Breweries replaced close to 1,000 old lighting fixtures in its facility with energy-efficient bulbs. The company received a $131,055 rebate for completing this lighting upgrade, bringing the cost to replace the lighting down to $158,945. With annual savings estimated at more than $139,000 in electricity costs, this lighting retrofit project has a very attractive 1.14-year payback. Over the last four years, Guelph Hydro Electric Systems Inc. has provided more than $1.8-million in OPA incentives for retrofit projects to businesses.

Local businesses interested in conducting their own energy efficiency retrofit project are encouraged to contact Guelph Hydro for direction on how to proceed. For more information about the OPA Retrofit Program, Total capital costs for the Sleeman Breweries’ retrofit came to $249,000 after a visit www.guelphhydro.saveonenergy.ca or contact Giorgio Boccalon at $10,500 rebate from Guelph Hydro. Annual savings as a result of the upgraded compressed air system are estimated at $42,000 with estimated energy savings of Guelph Hydro Electric Systems Inc. at 519-822-1750 (ext. 2308) or 420,000-kilowatt hours (kWh) per year. The new system also provides better gboccalon@guelphhydro.com. reliability and quality upgrades.

Business and Personal

by Carinta Mannarelli

Without much thought, my answer to the “how are you question” is almost always “great thanks!”. The degree to which this answer is honest varies greatly from day to day. When asked,“how’s business”, I tend to pause before answering. Mine is a unique business in that I have two distinct groups of clients that respond to economic change in different ways. Over the past 12 years, I’ve come to learn that my biggest group of clients–the traveler– will illustrate their reaction to economic change within six months. For example, if the local economy loses 1000 jobs tomorrow, I can expect that my transactions to travelers will show a significant decrease in approximately six months time. It is my belief that this time frame translates to approximately how long it takes to make and or change travel plans. Travel occurring in six months time is being planned now. Travel occurring in two months time has already been planned and paid for–economic changes will not affect these short-term travel plans. Conversely, my other group of clients, international business own-

ers, will react to economic change within two months. If Guelph were to lose 1000 local jobs, I can expect an increase in the number of new import and export businesses within two months. It’s my belief that these two months illustrate the time frame that is taken by terminated employees to begin a new business. Luckily for me, these clients tend to thrive in opposite cycles. With a slightly depressed local economy, my business is boasting a very high number of new import and export clients. On the flip side, we’re not selling many pesos. When asked about the state of our local economy, I deliberately try to offer a more meaningful answer than my “how are you” answer. Quite honestly, my answer to “how are we?” right now is FINE! New businesses are starting, existing businesses are picking up and people are starting to travel again. My long term forecast? Looks like there’s some sunshine in our future! Pack your sun block.

Financial alternatives–the investment future Given the instability of the equity markets in recent memory and considering the extremely low interest rates being paid to depositors at financial institutions, a comment that has become prevalent by investors is “I’ve been saving for a number of years but with no growth”. A number of obvious factors such as declining markets, inflation, taxation, job security and low bank rates have all contributed to the validity of this comment, but one must look a bit further to really understand why this is happening and what can be done about it. It starts with our basic training. Our parents, educators, employers and financial institutions condition us to see the investment world from their perspective–to do

things the way “everyone” does it. However, if you study the methodology of the wealthy or big investment funds you will discover they don’t manage their investment portfolios the way the average investor does. A good example of this is evidenced by the misconception that splitting ones portfolio between traditional asset classes such as equities, bonds and money products achieves diversification. In reality, this is not working any more. It is a fact that since mid2008 the S & P total return index and the Bond index have mirrored each other in performance–thus the traditional methods are not working effectively. Many analysts argue that Bay Street is dead and that if one does not take advantage

Funeral Home and Chapel Ltd.

“Wellington County's Oldest Family Owned Funeral Home”

Pre-arranging one's own funeral is now widely practiced across Canada. Gilbert MacIntyre & Son have been helping individuals and families with funeral prearrangements for almost 80 years. If you would like to make an appointment to discuss prearrangements, please contact us. Or, if you like, you can prearrange your funeral online. You will be asked the same basic questions you would in a one-on-one prearrangement meeting; but within the "comfort" of your own lifestyle. Our experience in dealing with prearranging funerals has lead to the development of the GILBERT MACINTYRE & SON TRUST PLAN for those who wish to pre-pay their funeral expenses.

The GILBERT MACINTYRE & SON TRUST PLAN retains all the advantages of the pre-arranged funeral, but goes further with respect to the financial advantages. · The GILBERT MACINTYRE & SON TRUST PLAN is hedge against inflation. The cost of the funeral will never increase, no matter how long it is before the funeral services are required. · Pre-payment reduces the financial demands on the survivors. Costs will be paid out of income now, rather than from much needed funds of the estate. · Like a paid-up life insurance policy, this plan is of immediate and far-reaching benefit to survivors.

The TERRA Program facilitates credits in Academic English, Outdoor Activities, Theology, Careers and Civics. One may be prompted to ask the question,“What does an ecology program have to do with business?” Well, the answers are bountiful. In addition to the curriculum disciplines being offered in TERRA, students meet community members who use their entrepreneur skills while working in disciplines related to ecology.

Community shared agriculture and farm managers, honey-bee researchers, engineers, co-operative business partners, spiritual directors and horticultural therapists. Students examine the variety of skill sets required to work, and witness individuals who have a passion for a career that goes beyond earning an income. Students realize that one’s work can nourish not only oneself, but also the hundreds of people to whom you and your work are connected. Whether it is the fair wage an Ethiopian coffee grower has earned to help create schools in their community, or reintroducing people to their local farmer–who puts a “real face” back on the food that comes to our table,

this understanding truly defines how our actions have a direct influence on our neighbour. The TERRA Program is facilitated on the property of the Ignatius Jesuit Centre. At the beginning of the semester students challenge their outdoor skills while back-country camping in Algonquin Provincial Park. Students comment on the beauty of Algonquin but are quick to note that the experience is challenging. It is this challenge that invites students to develop as a leadership team as they problem-solve, collaborate, support and serve each other. From that reference point students develop their leadership skills further through numerous hands-on activities, in

particular their facilitation of field trips for Grade 3 classes from various schools in W.C.D.S.B. The parents of TERRA students will often comment that their son or daughter’s experience in the program has “changed them”. With a focus on leadership, teamwork, passion, faith and service the change is for the better, and better makes good business.

Low rates can result in a premium roller coaster I recently lost a client. Another broker was able to secure a quote for their Benefit Plan that offered a 15% savings. A lot of small businesses have been forced to reduce expenses wherever they can. I understand that and I don’t blame the client for leaving. To be honest, if I wasn’t in the insurance business, I would probably do the same thing. But when it comes to Group Health and Dental Insurance, changing carriers for a lower price isn’t always a good thing. There is no magic in the way the carriers set the premium. While the actuarial calculations are complicated, the theory is straightforward. The insurance company’s goal is to collect enough premiums over the policy year to pay for your employee’s claims, plus their expenses to administer your plan. At the end of your rate guarantee, usually 12 months, the carrier performs a calculation to determine whether or not they reached their goal. If your claims were higher

than expected, your rates go up. If your claims were lower than expected, your rates go down. It seems simple, right? Well, the practices of the big three carriers have created a big mess. In order to grow their market share they often offer significant discounts to attract new business. Sometimes the premium is discounted to an extent that it doesn’t even cover the claims, let alone expenses. The client, who thought they were getting a great deal when they signed up, is faced with a big premium increase when the plan renews 12 months later. This is exactly what has happened with the client I recently lost. We were clearly able to demonstrate the lower premium the new carrier was proposing wasn’t high enough to cover their current claims. In fact, their current premium wasn’t covering their claims. So how does a new carrier come in with even lower rates? Marketing discounts. The result is a premium roller

by Michele Mactaggart coaster making it difficult to budget and even harder to communicate to employees if you share the premium with staff. I’m not suggesting Market Surveys don’t play an important role in cost management. They are very useful in determining whether or not you are maximizing the return on the premium you invest. But, making a decision to change carriers solely on a premium savings can be a mistake. It’s really important to ask your broker to compare fees, to explain how reserves are established and how they impact the renewal, and to be given an analysis that demonstrates the quoted premium is sufficient to properly fund current claims. If the Market Survey report lacks any of this information, tread carefully. Michele Mactaggart, Bensol Consulting Inc. Benefits Solutions for Business, www.bensolconsulting.com

The Guelph Country Club – A historical snippet as we celebrate 100 years IN THE BEGINNING

On April 12, 1912 an Ontario Letters Patent was signed at a share capital of $ 30,000 and 300 shares for The Guelph Country Club Ltd., by the Guelph Bank Manager Courtland Elliot Freer, Barrister James Frederick Watt, Supt. Arthur Maurice Brown, and Insurance Agent George Powell Hamilton. These gentlemen, along with Guelph’s first golfers, had taken the initial step. The first meeting of the shareholders of the club was in the Guelph Carnegie Hall at the Library on May 7th 1912. A Finance Committee was formed, along with a Building Committee, the latter being given full power to engage an Architect and do all that was necessary to have a

Clubhouse erected as soon as possible, at a cost of no more than $6,500. The Ground Committee was given the power to do all that was necessary to get the grounds in condition for playing golf as soon as possible, at a cost of $1,000 (or less). A House Committee was formed, and Auditors appointed. With these Committees in place, and the fees set, the Guelph Country Club commenced.

Mr. C.E. Freer was elected the first President of the club. In 1913 the Directors held their meetings at Mr. Freer’s home, and the Club had engaged a Professional to teach golf every afternoon, the fee being 50 cents per full hour. The Professional was to help with the work being carried out daily on the Golf course grounds. The original farmland was rough and to keep the course in trim it was decided to obtain a herd of sheep and install fences to contain them. By the end of 1915 the membership had reached 336 of which 162 were shareholders.

Super Food & your health by Anna Bartolomucci What constitutes a “Super Food”? This is quite a claim but some foods are so nutrient rich that they are classified as such because they truly are better than the rest. There is a world of information out there on Super Foods and repeated suggestions that these foods be included in a healthy diet. Interestingly, besides various nutritious values, there are additional benefits to Super Foods. Some top-performers that include immuneboosting anti-oxidants include elderberry, acai berry, blueberries and red berries, watermelon, raw almonds, wheat germ, cabbage, button mushrooms, garlic, spinach, broccoli, sweet potato, and green or black tea. More simply, colourful produce, especially red, blue, purple, yellow and orange, whole grains, fish, lean protein, low fat dairy and nuts are the best sources from which to choose. Antioxidants are vitamins, minerals and nutrients that protect and repair cells from damage caused by free radicals. Free radicals can damage cells, interfere with your immune system, and may lead to many chronic diseases such as heart disease, arthritis, and even some cancers. Super Foods can help to improve health and prevent disease. Antioxidant

rich fruits and vegetables should be eaten raw or lightly steamed for the best health benefits. As always, portions in moderation are a good rule of thumb but if you are tempted to indulge, you can choose the lower-calorie Super Foods such as fruits and simply prepared vegetables. Experts say that in addition to a healthy diet rich in Super Foods, regular physical activity, controlling stress, staying well hydrated, and not smoking, are also important to a healthy lifestyle. Make this the year of “Super Food for a Super You”. Anna Bartolomucci RN, WellServe Health Care Management, 519-837-3896 Ext 17, anna.bartolomucci@wellserve.on.ca

Exciting changes are in store for the Guelph Chamber of Commerce as we work toward continuous improvement in supporting Guelph’s business community, entering our 144th year of service to Guelph. First you will notice a brand new look and enhanced features on our website: www.guelphchamber.com. There are some excellent opportunities to advertise on the new website that can be found under the Promote link.A brand new Connect Guelph directory is now available at the chamber office. All ChamLloyd Longfield ber members will receive a free copy of this joint project of the Guelph Chamber – City of Guelph – University of Guelph – Grow Guelph. But, there’s more! The Board of Directors has approved the Chamber moving to the Downtown, to create a Chamber Business Centre.A site has been selected in the Walker Building at 111 Farquhar Street, across the tracks from the new transit terminal, on the 2nd and 3rd floor of Guelph’s oldest industrial building dating back to 1858. The Guelph Chamber of Commerce welcomes the opportunity to co-locate with Innovation Guelph, a member of the Ontario Network of Excellence, who are currently operating on the 3rd floor. There will be space there for business presentations that can accommodate up to 70 guests. A number of other business offices will also be locating on the 2nd floor sharing reception with the new Guelph Chamber office, as well as 5 business incubator spaces within the Business Centre. The Chamber’s move onto the second floor will follow after renovations have been completed within the Chamber Business Centre, at the end of the first quarter. The Board of Directors of the Chamber of Commerce sees this as a pivotal move to support Guelph businesses, provide access to member-to-member educational opportunities, and to connect with the core of Guelph’s community in the downtown. The Chamber Business Centre will be key in contributing to Guelph’s economic growth, profitability, competitiveness, and community involvement for all types of businesses and business people in Guelph.

The company has yet to decide on a new name for the 91year-old, Stanley Thompson-designed course. “We want to choose an identity that recognizes the club's long history in the Owen Sound area, but also asserts a new and exciting chapter in that history, said Mr. Balnar. “I might add we're pretty close to achieving that goal. It is expected the company will launch the “re-branded Owen Sound club at a special event in February. “Golf is a major contributor to the economy in this area, and participation in the activity is growing rapidly. We at Balnar Management are excited to be part of that trend.

Business to Business Is your workplace safe? Unsafe work practices, unsafe workplaces and lack of proper training are key reasons for accidents in the workplace. Every one of us must take a closer look at our workplace to ensure the safety of all workers. Throughout the province of Ontario, the majority of facility’s safety and health audits that were completed, unsafe mezzanine, working and storage surfaces and non-guarded raised structures were all identified as not meeting the minimum requirements under the OHSA and the building codes. These structures raise risk of accidents due to slips, trips and falls and other structural concerns from improper or unsafe access, no guard rails, improper structure, improper lag to floor and walls, no safety training and not being

approved by a structural engineer. In Ontario, one in every six lost-time injuries is caused by a fall (slips and falls totaling 65% of accidents overall). Falls killed 11 workers in 2009 in Ontario; slips trips and falls accounted for one in five injuries and one in four fatalities in industrial workplaces alone. 429 fatalities were reported in Ontario as of October 2010. In BC, 7.5% of all accidents are related to falls–over the past 5 years, 700 BC workers were injured due to slips, trips or falls. Don’t be a statistic–work safe. A thorough “Facility Audit” will identify any unsafe, non-compliant hazards in the workplace. It is very easy to miss the obvious when we look at the same things day-in and day-out. It is always a good idea to have an outside party (Consulting

Firm) complete a facility audit at least once per year. Seen through the eyes of a third party, often identifies hazards that we may overlook or are not aware of to begin with. The Occupational Health and Safety Act and Canada’s Building Codes are explicit in its requirements to protect workers from slips, trips and falls. A guardrail is required on structures that are over 3 m (9 feet) pursuant to section 46 of the Occupational Health and Safety Act General Requirements 2.1(e). See General Guidelines 2.1 Section 46 of OHSA for full requirements under the act. The guardrail must be 107 centimeters above the surrounding floor, ground, platform or other surface pursuant to section 13(1) of O. Reg. 851/90 in accordance with

Real Estate Construction Liens 101 When can you use a construction lien to protect monies owing to you? Being knowledgeable about the basic rules is essential to protect your rights and to get paid. A construction lien is an interest in favour of those who supply materials or services to improve land or a building on land. If you are financing a construction project, a designer/consultant, an owner of property, a service or material supplier to a construction project, a general contractor, or a subcontractor, the Construction Lien Act could apply to you. The purpose of a construction lien is to protect the interests of those who supply materials and services by creating security for payment for them–it is meant to prevent an owner of property from receiving an improvement to their property

by Trenton Johnson without paying for it. Here is how it works. If you have supplied materials or services on a construction project and have completed your work and remain unpaid, you have 45 days to determine what to do. If you want to register a construction lien, you must first preserve a lien by registering a Claim for Lien within 45 days from the date you last supplied materials or services on the project. This document sets out, amongst other things, the amount owing and the location of the property. If after registering the Claim for Lien you remain unpaid, you must then perfect your lien by issuing a Statement of Claim (this commences a formal court proceeding) within 45 days from the last date the lien could have been preserved. The impact of preserving and perfecting a lien

claim is that it will show up on title to the property at the local land registry office. This generally stops the flow of money from either the bank to the owner, from the owner to the general contractor, or from the general contractor to the subcontractors. If you fail to comply with the timing provisions or if you do not elect to proceed with a construction lien claim, you still have the ability to bring a civil claim on the basis of breach of contract, unjust enrichment or breach of trust.
