Royal City Soccer Club–building confidence and leadership The Royal City Soccer Club (RCSC) is a nonprofit organization offering unique soccer camp experiences to virtually ANY child between the ages of 5 to13, regardless of skill or ability level. The Super Summer Soccer+ Camp is the largest grassroots soccer camp in Canada with over 65 locations across Ontario, Alberta and British Columbia. Founded in 1993 in Guelph Ontario, RCSC has now provided fun, sun and laughter to over 100,000 boys and girls. Fun, safety, and healthy child development are the key principles of the camp, rather than that of training and development of elite soccer players. Using the sport of soccer as the theme for the program, fundamentals of soccer are combined with principals of fair play, sharing, positive development, and friendship to create a camp experience like no other. Children build self-esteem, while learning the concepts of leadership, respect, and teamwork. Campers have the option of three different sessions - Full Day, Mornings, or Afternoons. Morning sessions focus primarily on soccer with warm-up games and exercises, skill development, team building, fun activities, scrimmages and Mini-World Cups. Campers

are grouped and coached by age, size and ability where possible. Coaches supervise the campers in a low ratio while gearing the drills and skills towards fun and personal growth. Afternoon sessions begin with an optional leisure swim at the local community pool and finish with large group camp games such as capture the flag, staff verses camper soccer, soccer baseball and much more. Although the structured program component is scheduled from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm, RCSC offers early and late drop-off/pick-up times at no extra charge. Perfect for the working parent, children are fully supervised for extended drop-off times starting at 8:00am and late pick-up until 5:30pm. Each camper receives a Camp T-Shirt, Soccer Ball, Waterbottle, Camp Medal, and Camp Certificate and for one special camper, a coveted Camper of The Week Medal. “You may find increased skill level across the board with your camper but it is our goal that the skills they take away from our program are ones they can not only use with their feet, but also their mind, says Royal City Soccer Club founder Jeff Bryer. GYMC’s Play On Campaign The Guelph Youth Music Centre (GYMC) is committed to providing music and arts education opportunities to children in Guelph and Wellington County. The benefits of music education are an important part of childhood development; however the GYMC now needs the support of its friends and community partners to be able to meet their mandate and continue to offer these enriching programs. The Play On fundraising program allows those that value arts education to support the GYMC through a $20 monthly automatic donation program. “After the economic downturn, the GYMC is seeing the need to raise money to support its programs and services,” said Ken Hammill, Board Chair. “The Play On program asks

friends of the GYMC to commit to giving $20 per month to the centre to allow us to continue to offer accessible and affordable school programs, outreach programs, facility rentals and services to promote music and the arts in Guelph and Wellington County.” The donations from Play On are tax deductable and will be used to support the centre in the areas of most need. They host approximately 1,100 lessons per week privately add to that their own programs and that is up to 35,100 hours of music and arts lessons annually! Children who are engaged in music are using and developing both sides of their brain, increasing the child’s ability to learn. Children who experience music lessons not only gain

competence more easily in reading, writing, math and science but also develop both fine and gross motor skills. Despite this research, music and arts education is no longer a high priority of the Ontario school curriculum. “My entire life has been touched by music in various ways, and it all began in elementary school. It’s unfortunate that the emphasis on music has faded in schools. I don’t want to imagine a Guelph where young people don’t have access to a creative outlet like the GYMC,” says Honourary Chair of the Play On program, CBC Radio Host and well-known musician, Craig Norris. Guelph and Wellington County is extremely fortunate to have a not-for profit organization

2011 SUMMER ISSUE

The Guelph Enabling Garden Designed to make gardening accessible and enjoyable for all members of the community, the idea for an enabling garden in Guelph began in 1999 when a number of individuals and organizations recognized the need within the city. With the generous assistance of local companies like the Reid’s Heritage Group, Gamsby and Mannerow Ltd., BDO Dunwoody, Miller Thomson LLP, Corus Entertainment and both the Ontario Trillium Foundation and Guelph Wellington United Way, the Guelph Enabling Garden officially opened in 2005. The garden is a multiuse garden designed for everyone who wants to participate including children, the elderly and members of the community with varying degrees of physical and cognitive abilities. The barrier-free, therapeutic garden is a fully accessible working and teaching garden that enables everyone to work, learn and relax. The Guelph Enabling Garden provides an ideal setting for horticultural therapy programs - a practical and viable treatment with wide-ranging benefits for people in therapeutic, vocational and wellness programs. Workshops are also offered throughout the season on a variety of topics, as well as sessions geared to schoolaged children, seniors and people with varying abilities.

Located in Riverside Park on land donated by the City of Guelph, the Garden continues to be completely volunteer-driven, and derives its support from community donations and partnerships. Constructed with wide, gently graded wheelchair accessible entrances and paths, the garden utilizes raised beds and containers for use by standing or sitting gardeners. Tools are adapted to turn a disability into an ability and sensory-stimulation environments have been created with plants selected for fragrance, texture and colour. Native plants are used wherever possible to raise awareness of how appropriate plant choices can create a garden that does not rely on water and chemicals, and will attract wildlife such as birds, bees and butterflies. Environmentally responsible horticultural practices such as water conservation and composting are demonstrated in the garden, which is pesticide-free. Stage One includes raised and ground beds, a woodland garden, a spiral garden, an outdoor sculpture gallery, and community garden plots. Plans are in place for Stage Two, which

Understanding energy balance Submitted by the Health and Performance Centre

Human bodies need energy to fuel all bodily functions, whether at rest, work, or play. The body is at its best functioning when the body’s energy balance is in equilibrium. Energy balance refers to the comparison between energy intake and energy expenditure. We take in all our energy as calories from food. For carbohydrates and proteins, this is 4 calories/g. For fats, this is 9 calories/g. Food is our body’s only source of energy. Whether you’re walking up the stairs, washing your hair, or riding your bike, you’re using calories. This is referred to as energy expenditure. Basal metabolism is the amount of energy the body requires to break down the food consumed and to perform basic bodily functions. It makes up 60 to 75% of energy expenditure. The greater your muscle mass, the higher your basal metabolism! Thermogenesis is the production of heat in the body. This energy requirement makes up 10% of energy expenditure. Finally, physical activity makes up the remaining 15 to 30% of energy expenditure. How many calories are you burning? Are you tired of loosening your belt around an expanding waistline? Or concerned about how excess pounds may be affecting your health? Weight gain most commonly occurs because you’re consuming more calories than you’re burning. To lose weight, you need to either eat fewer calories, increase the amount you expend through exercise, or both! Try not to think of exercise calories and food calories as trade-offs. It’s easy to fall into the “I can eat another donut if I just run another 5 kilometers” trap. Instead, congratulate yourself on working towards meeting Canada’s recommendations for physical activity. For adults, this amounts to 150 minutes each week, and 60 minutes each day for children. Want to know how many calories you burn through different activities? Check out this list from the Mayo Clinic at www.mayoclinic.com/health/exercise/SM00109 The Health and Performance Centre is located at U of G, 519-767-5011 or www.ouguelph.ca/hpc

Now in its 32nd year, the Elora Festival runs from July 8 to 31, and brings the world of music to the scenic village of Elora. Artistic Director Noel Edison has chosen a wide range of music for this summer, featuring traditional classical fare, along with concerts that will appeal to younger music lovers–with the finest local, national, and international talent. The opening concert features Mozart’s brilliant Symphony No. 40 in G minor, as well as his beloved Requiem. Guest soloists for the evening are soprano Karina Gauvin, mezzo-soprano Jennifer Enns Modolo, tenor Christopher Mayell, and baritone Matthew Cassils. The opening night reception concludes with delectable samples from local restaurants and a spectacular fireworks display.

The Festival will feature the Grammy nominated Elora Festival Singers in eight performances this year including Israel in Egypt, one of Handel’s most entertaining oratorios. The Festival Singers will also take part in three Evensong services, and four Sunday morning services at St. John’s Church. Guest artists this summer include the Madawaska String Quartet with Leslie Kinton, and the award winning Cecilia String Quartet. Legendary performers Michael Burgess (Les Miserables) and Rebecca Caine (Phantom of the Opera) will present the first performance of their Dream Concert, a program of Broadway classics that they will tour across North America. The 1920 silent film classic The Mark of

Zorro starring Douglas Fairbanks will be screened with accompaniment by an instrumental ensemble, paired with a delectable offering by Sensational Elora. Through regular concerts, recordings, broadcasts and touring, the Elora Festival Singers has established its reputation as one of the finest chamber choirs in Canada and beyond. The hallmark of the Singers’ style is their rich, warm sound and clarity of texture, as well as their ability to perform an amazing range of repertoire. With this year’s Grammy nomination, Noel and the Singers received well-deserved recognition for their recording of Eric Whitacre’s choral music. Tickets and concert listings is available online at www.elorafestival.com or by calling 519-846-0331 or 1-888-747-7550.

The University of Guelph will host the 1st annual Guelph Wheels in Action event on Sunday, June 12. For the past seven years, the University of Guelph has hosted the annual Rick Hansen Wheels in Motion event each June to raise funds to support those in our community living with spinal cord injury (SCI). Although the national Wheels in Motion event is on hiatus for 2011 and 2012, the Guelph Wheels in Action event will carry on where Wheels in Motion left off by offering an exciting wheelchair sports chal-

lenge and a 2.5 km wheel/walk. People of all ages and abilities will wheel, bike, skate, run or walk through the beautiful University of Guelph campus to raise funds, encourage hope and celebrate all of the possibilities of living with SCI. Registration begins at 10:30am at the W.F. Mitchell Athletics Centre and the event will kick off at noon. Wheels in Action will include a free BBQ, on-site entertainment and activities for kids. Over the years, nearly $150,000 has been raised

locally to support a wide range of quality of life initiatives that support those living with SCI. Last year’s funds helped individuals and organizations in our community purchase new wheelchairs and essential adaptive equipment. All of the funds (100%) raised through this year’s Guelph Wheels In Action will support the purchase of equipment and participation in a range of life-enhancing programs. Funds will support the SpinFit exercise program at Guelph’s St. Joseph’s Hospital, a community based exercise program for people

with SCI. It has both a 45minute cardiovascular component and a 45-minute strengthtraining component. Individual assistance is provided in varying degrees as required to program participants so they can successfully participate and benefit from exercise. Guelph Wheels in Action will be teaming up with the Canadian Disability Resource Council to accept donations (in person and online) and provide tax receipts for any donations over $20.
