2012 SUMMER

Message from the Publisher Welcome to our summer issue of the Activity and Events Guide. There are such a variety of fun things to do this summer. Enjoy many of the festivals happening around the city including Canada Day, Hillside, the Multicultural Festival, Festival Italiano, and Ribfest. Several organizations are celebrating significant anniversaries this year. Congratulations to Sunrise Therapeutic Riding and Learning Centre for celebrating 30 years in the community, operating therapeutic riding programs for adults and children with special needs. Taste of Guelph celebrates their 15th anniversary. This year more than 50 local restaurants, caterers, vintners and brewers will be serving samples from their menus to raise funds for The Foundation of Guelph General Hospital and St. Joseph’s Health Centre Foundation. Art on the Street marks ten years as downtown Guelph’s annual art

exhibition and sale in July. Over 100 artists working in a variety of mediums will fill Quebec St. this summer. June is senior’s month. I hope everyone takes the time to read about an inspirational couple, Bruce and Lorraine MacPherson, (pg 15) in our Active Adults section. I got to know Bruce through Rotary, and the passion he and his wife put into their projects in Africa is an inspiration to many. Let us help you plan your seasonal events. Email venture@golden.net for more information. Enjoy your summer! Mike Baker Venture Guelph Publications Ltd. 519 824-1595 venture@golden.net

Rainbow Day Camp raising funds for Healthy Lunch Founded in 1973, Rainbow Day Camp is an accredited, inclusive, not-for-profit summer recreational day camp that provides quality programs according to the strengths, needs and abilities of each camper. Camps run from July 2 to August 24, with activities for children aged 4 to 10 and Teen Camp programs for youth aged 13 and older. Campers bring their own lunch Monday through Wednesday, and Rainbow provides a lunch option the other two days. Fridays have always been and will continue to be Pizza Day. Thursdays have traditionally been Hot Dog Day, but the camp would like to replace the nutrientvoid hot dog lunch with a healthier menu option. The Healthy Lunch Program will provide a healthy lunch (a sandwich and a drink) to campers and volunteers each week through July and August giving them an extra boost of energy to keep having fun and making summer memories. Rainbow now needs to raise $2500 to get the program started for this year. Businesses or individuals interested in making a donation (tax receipt provided upon request), sponsoring this initiative or making an in-kind donation are urged to contact the Administrator, Jennifer Harrison, at 519-837-0387 or email info@rainbowdaycamp.com.

Sunrise Therapeutic Riding and Learning Centre celebrates 30 years by Heather Grummett Founded in 1982, Sunrise Therapeutic Riding and Learning Centre began as a small part-time therapeutic riding program for children with special needs, running out of a donated facility in Puslinch Township. The originally named Sunrise Equestrian Centre for the Disabled began the therapy programs with just five developmentally delayed riders. Hearing about the newly registered charity, Tom and Kathy Sommerville generously offered one of their horses, two stalls for ponies that had been donated, and the use of their small riding arena, when it was not being used by them or their boarders. Within a short time, the demand for service grew, and Sunrise had a waiting list. With a need to expand, the program moved to a rented barn in Eramosa Township. With no indoor riding arena, the program closed for the winter, running from April to October each year. During the years from 1983 until 1996, Sunrise had two more moves, each time improving on the services being offered to the community. In 1987 Sunrise rented a Grand River Conservation Authority farm by Guelph Lake, and began their summer day camp program. In 1996, after a yearlong capital campaign, Sunrise was able to purchase a farm in Puslinch Township with an indoor riding facility. After fourteen years, this final move allowed the organization to

establish a full-time year round program. Over the past 30 years hundreds of children and adults with special needs have benefited from the many programs available at Sunrise. Offering a viable alternative to traditional therapy, the 105-acre farm has provided riding clubs for children and adults with a range of special needs including autism, visual and hearing impairments, intellectual challenges, Down Syndrome, Cerebral Palsy, Foetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS), traumatic brain injury and emotional trauma. Today programs run full-time, year round with a herd of over 20 horses and up to 100 riders a week. A family physician or physiotherapist refers every child that enters the program. Sunrise instructors are Canadian Certified. A Consultant Occupational Therapist and Physiotherapist also donate time and expertise to assist with assessing all riders entering the program. Fifty children attend a summer day camp program each day of July and August. Sunrise offers a variety of programs for children with and without special needs, providing an exciting yet understanding atmosphere filled with mutual respect. In 2011 Sunrise became the first Canadian Accredited Examination

and Training Centre for therapeutic riding instructors. Interns come to the residential program from around the world and across Canada. “We are privileged to play a role in ensuring that other communities in Canada will have access to a therapeutic riding program, where none existed before,” says Ann Caine, Executive Director for Sunrise Therapeutic Riding and Learning Centre. While the riding program is health related, Sunrise receives no ongoing government funding. The staff, volunteers and supporters work hard to raise annual funding to ensure the program continues. Sunrise is currently completing a pilot research project with McMaster University on the impact of riding therapy with children on the autism spectrum. The organization is seeking funding to run a full research project in 2013.

Having trouble finding ways to motivate your children to continue learning during the summer? Kumon Math and Reading Centres of Guelph suggest the following tips to help you keep your children interested in learning. Overall, it is essential that you understand your children’s interests, beliefs and concerns. These are their motivations. You need to ask your children how they are motivated, not how motivated they are. This is an important distinction. Once you have that down, here are five other things to help you on your way: • Promote your children’s success. Help your children set goals that are realistic and achievable. This supports their intrinsic motivation, encourages their efforts and achievement, and helps determine their strengths. Remember to always reward for improvement as well as achievement. • Arouse and encourage your children’s curiosity – present them with choices of activities that offer a challenge. • Foster originality. This gives your children an opportunity to express their autonomy. Present your children with alternatives and let them brainstorm with you. • Encourage relationships. We have an innate need to form interpersonal relationships. Let your children invite a friend to join in the various activities. • Be involved in your children’s summer experiences. Ask them questions and offer them your own experiences. Create an open dialogue with your children. This gets them thinking about their experiences and supports positive interpersonal relationships in the family. For more educational tips and hints, visit www.facebook.com/kumon. Learn to skate with an edge At Inside Edge Skating and Hockey School, we have designed our programs to focus on teaching children and adults the basic elements that are essential for proper skill development. We have one of the best local programs for learning the fundamentals. We provide participants with the "edge" on development and learning skills with our low ratios and creative style of instruction. Our goal is to provide each participant with a unique and enjoyable learning experience. All of our programs are delivered by a very talented, experienced, mature and dedicated team of instructors, which makes all the difference in the learning and enjoyment of our participants.

Sharon Richardson is the owner and director of Inside Edge. With over 25 years of skating and instructing experience, Sharon has developed her own coaching techniques, which are the basis for the Inside Edge programs. Skating, hockey, coaching and working with kids is her passion and she is always learning and enhancing her approach to teaching. She believes being an effective instructor means that you never stop learning yourself and looking for ways to increase the learning of your participants. She is an active member of the local community, currently involved in her family's school as well as assisting with Guelph soccer. Located in Cambridge, Inside Edge offers a variety of programs and operates all year round. Learn to skate programs are available for beginners, and youth skating programs give skaters the confidence to learn new skills. Introductory hockey programs develop skating skills, and power skating programs increase efficiency and power while advancing in hockey skills. Summer camps include ringette camp, girls and boys house league hockey camp, skating camp and Junior camps. In the fall and winter there are programs for the whole family starting from just three years of age to adults of any age. One of the most popular programs is the adult co-ed hockey league. This league has three levels that will accommodate any calibre of player. It is an excellent way to learn the game while having fun. At Inside Edge we are confident that our programs will provide you and your child with the "Inside Edge" to having fun and learning new skills. Come and experience the difference we can make! For more details on all of our programs please visit us at the Inside Edge website at www.insideedgeskating.com

A look back ... Founder of Guelph, John Galt was born in Irvine, North Ayrshire, Scotland. in 1789. He became an apprentice and junior clerk, writing essays and stories for local journals in his spare time. Moving to London, he began studying law in 1809. Galt was appointed Secretary to the Canada Company in 1824–a charter company established to aid in the colonization of the Huron Tract in Upper Canada. Along with founding Guelph in 1827, he co-founded Goderich with Tiger Dunlop the same year. His original home in Guelph is the site of Trapper's Alley. Galt chose the name Guelph for our community because it was one of the family names of the British royal family, and it had apparently never been used as a place name before. Hence the current use of the term "The Royal City" for Guelph. Galt wrote over 43 works including poetry, drama, short stories and travel writing. His novels are best known for their depiction of Scottish rural life, with a touch of ironic humour. Did you know he also wrote a number of school texts under the pseudonym of Reverend T. Clark?

Guelph Wheels in Action 2012 June 17, at the W.F. Mitchell Athletics Centre, University of Guelph. Registration begins at 10:30am and the event will kick off at noon. Make a difference in the lives of people with spinal cord injury (SCI) this Father's Day by wheeling, biking, skating, running or walking through the beautiful University of Guelph campus. Funds will be raised to encourage hope and celebrate all of the possibilities of living with SCI. The event includes a free BBQ, on-site entertainment, wheelchair activities and special activities for kids. In 2011 the national Wheels in Motion event was discontinued but the Guelph team was determined to maintain the momentum of this exciting event and

Guelph Wheels in Action was created to carry on where Wheels in Motion left off. The event was re-launched last year with a new name and a new partnership with The Canadian Disability Resource Council. “We are still very proud of our relationship with the Rick Hansen Foundation, says Cyndy McLean. “We are happy though to bring the focus of the Wheels in Action event to our Guelph community and the amazing folks that live here. Over the years, nearly $150,000 has been raised locally to support a wide range of quality of life initiatives that support people in Guelph living with SCI. Half the funds raised last year ($4500) went directly to the SpinFit program at Guelph's St. Joseph's Health Centre. SpinFit is a

community based exercise program for people with SCI. It has both cardiovascular and strength components and is designed to meet the needs of the program participants so they can successfully participate and benefit from the exercise sessions. The balance of last year’s funds have been available to individuals with SCI to help them achieve their quality of life goals and to address their personal needs. Donations for this year's event can be accepted both in person or online and tax receipts will be provided for any donations over $20. Family volunteers tend to value charitable activities highly and recognize that family participation in volunteer work can contribute to a happy, stable and rewarding life. Family volunteering has gained recognition as a great way to allow children and teens to gain confidence and self-esteem through volunteering with the guiding hand of a family member. It also allows those with limited time due to their already busy schedules to get engaged in the community while spending time with their children. With the support of the Cowan Foundation, the Volunteer Centre of Guelph/Wellington is working on a pilot project with a number of community benefit organizations to strengthen their capacity to welcome Family Volunteers through education, coaching and the development of new activities. We will also work with families to determine their needs and interests to match them to these new and exciting opportunities. Whether you’re new to volunteering or have volunteered over your lifetime, consider how your family can get involved in your community. If you are interested in participating in this project as a family or organization, please contact Katrina Duiker at the Volunteer Centre of Guelph/Wellington by email at kduiker@volunteerguelphwellington.on.ca or 519-822-0912.

Taste Of Guelph– one great party for high quality health care More than 50 of the area’s finest restaurateurs, caterers, vintners and brewers will be serving up samples from their menus to raise funds for The Foundation of Guelph General Hospital and St. Joseph’s Health Centre Foundation at this year’s premiere garden party Taste of Guelph. Scheduled for Sunday, September 16, 2012 on the grounds of St. Joseph’s Health Centre, the event is now in its fifteenth year and organizers promise it will be even better than the past fourteen. Linamar is back again as a presenting sponsor, as are platinum sponsors The Letter M Marketing, and Royal City Nursery; gold sponsors Roy-Al Rentals and Party Centre, the Guelph Tribune, Intrigue Media, Magic106.1/1460 CJOY; and others including Palmer Audio, the Guelph Chamber of Commerce, Platypi Designs and Swan Moving & Storage. Others are signing on as the summer approaches but there are still openings for a business that wants to support the community while reaping the benefits of a great marketing opportunity. New this year, Serene Condos is on-board as a presenting sponsor. Surrounded by beautiful tents and dĂŠcor, close to 650 guests and participants will enjoy great food, music and a wonderful day under bright sunny skies. An added attraction this year is a live auction of one-of-akind gift packages. “Taste of Guelph is a great way for people to have a direct and very positive effect on the quality of health care in our community,â€? says Suzanne Bone, President and CEO, The Foundation of Guelph General Hospital. “The way our participants–our culinary masters, our musical talent, and our on-site volunteers–come together is extraordinary and very gratifying.â€? “Every year, each Taste event seems better than the last,â€? says Mary DuQuesnay, President and CEO of St. Joseph’s Health Centre Foundation. “We all share one goal–to continue great health care for Guelph and Wellington County.â€? St. Joseph’s will use the funds raised to help pay for its state-of-the-art, $2.6 million Adult Day Program Centre which is the only facility of its kind providing much-needed services to survivors of acquired brain injury living in Guelph and Wellington County. Brain injury is a serious medical problem that’s more common in Canada than HIV/AIDS, multiple sclerosis, breast cancer and spinal cord injury combined. From tonsil removal, to mastectomy, to hip replacement and every routine and emergency procedure in between, close to 65 community members come to Guelph General Hospital for surgery each day. Proceeds from this year’s Taste of Guelph will help the hospital ensure it has all the equipment it needs to care for them. Taste of Guelph has raised more than $650,000, shared between the two Foundations. Over the years, these funds have been used to purchase essential medical equipment to both save and enhance lives. In addition, the money provides for resident and patient programs, and research and education projects for acute care and long-term care in Guelph and Wellington County.

Guelph Youth Music Centre welcomes new Executive Director

e

The Guelph Youth Music Centre is delighted to welcome Gabriella Currie as the organization’s new Executive Director. Beginning her role on April 10, Gabriella brings an extensive background in arts management, leadership and performance. Currently living in Guelph, she comes to us from the Rose Theatre in Brampton where she has been instrumental in the initiation of many successful programs. “The Board and staff are very excited about moving forward with our new Executive Director,” said Ken Hammill, Board Chair. “Gabriella’s enthusiasm, innovative thinking and experience in the arts will be a great asset to the GYMC as we continue with our mission to enrich and foster the development of our youth through music and the arts. “ The GYMC has spent the last few months reviewing and revising its organizational structure to better serve our community partners and provide excellent arts programming for youth. The Guelph Country Club – A historical snippet as we celebrate 100 years From 1955 through 1958 a number of changes to the Country Club clubhouse took place. The large open veranda overlooking the river was repainted and totally screened in; today it is enclosed and is the main banquet hall. The canopy over the front entrance, which provided nesting areas for many birds, became a nuisance and dangerous and had to be removed. At that time, the entrance doors to the main club, and men’s and ladies’ locker rooms were accessed directly from the outside of the building. It was not until later–circa 1964–that a new glassed entrance lobby was constructed. On the course, the early nursery work of 1921 had resulted in such mature tree growth that 70 poplars had to be removed the same number that had been removed in 1954.

Mr.J.G.Goldie became President in 1957 and the Club voted Miss Effie Smith to be an Honorary Member; she had been a member since the inception of the Club in 1912. Miss Smith was then 90 years young. It was at about this time that the Club Professional of 25 years,John Porteous, passed away. The next year, due to concerns about the clubhouse water supply,it was decided to connect it to the city sewage system. In this same year,Club membership reached 420,including 198 social members, and it was decided that all members must become shareholders. With these strong Club activities,Wally Slatter,a long-time active member, who had his Radio station CJOY,donated a City Championship Trophy and broadcast the event; that year The Guelph Country Club won it. Strict‘moral’controls were in operation in 1959 and beer was not allowed to be sold on Sunday. This was the first year that it was decided to keep the Club open in the

winter months. Mrs.Dick was hired as the Stewardess,at a rate of $50 per month, and the Dick family lived upstairs at the clubhouse and performed caretaker services. It was during this period in the early 60`s that several offers to purchase the Club property were tendered. Many questions about the Club`s future were under discussion at special meetings of both the directors and meetings of the members. The main alternative discussions under consideration were to remain and improve the existing grounds and clubhouse,to purchase alternative land,or negotiate to purchase the Cutten Fields Golf Club. These debates continued over the same decade. The discussions lead up to the opening of the curling rink for the Guelph Country and Curling Club. - From the booklet GUELPH COUNTRY CLUB The First Century 1912-2012 by R.Wilson Clark

Art auction to support youth art classes Wyndham Art Supplies and the Guelph School of Art are ready to host their annual silent art auction in support of The GSA Children’s Fund. Money raised will help subsidize visual art camps and classes for youth under the age of 18, who may not otherwise be able to afford it. More than 50 artists have volunteered to create an original 10-inch square piece of art. Downtown businesses have donated space to exhibit the auction pieces as part of a preview Downtown Art Walk. This year’s walk is scheduled for June 4 to June 16. Bidding will then open on June 18 and can be done in-store at Wyndham Art Supplies or online at www.wyndhamARTsupplies.com. This year the silent bidding will continue until the 20th anniversary celebration event for Wyndham Art held on July 7. If you know a family who may benefit from a camp subsidy or partial subsidy, applications are available at Wyndham Art Supplies and The Guelph School of Art.

Guelph Arts Council and Guelph Chamber Of Commerce connect artists with award winning businesses Working with Guelph Arts Council, Guelph Chamber of Commerce will commission one artist to design and create the awards for their 2012 Awards of Excellence. Each and every year, the Chamber presents their signature event which celebrates the work and achievements of exceptional individuals and businesses in the community. This year, the event will take place on June 28 and will continue to offer the community a way to recognize the valuable contributions that local businesses make to the community at large. This year, each of the four award winners will receive an original work of art by a local artist as part of their award. Local artists from a range of media were invited to submit an application to the Guelph Arts Council by May 25. The successful applicant will be noted in the Award of Excellence program and will hold the honour of being the first artist to design the award for this established event.

Over a century of caring The Guelph Humane Society has been sheltering and rescuing animals in the Guelph and Wellington communities since 1893. The organization focuses on reuniting stray animals and their owners, re-homing unwanted animals, and encouraging spaying and neutering as a way to deal with pet overpopulation. The GHS’s roots in the community are deep and rich. Everything the organization represents and produces is somehow intertwined in the city of Guelph and Wellington communities. The main focus at the shelter is the care and welfare of all animals. Not every animal that comes in can be considered a pet, but many are given this hope and dream. A large segment of the Guelph Community own pets and they are considered members of their families–many of whom were adopted from the GHS. The GHS connects with children as well through the Humane Education program, which reaches into various school boards; the Junior Humane Club; and camps offered during March break and summer, where children come into the shelter and learn even more about animals in general. Volunteers come from the local communities. They play an integral role at the GHS and without them the GHS would find it hard just to exist. Additionally programs are in place with such organizations as Trellis, Wyndham House and Acord. The GHS holds the Animal Control Contract for the City and its constituents, which includes dog licensing, sheltering of city strays and adoption services. As an Affiliate of the OSPCA the GHS also investigates allegations of cruelty and neglect to animals. GHS and the city of Guelph truly work hand in hand in bringing their mission statement to fruition. The GHS is a registered charitable organization, which exists solely on the generosity of public and private donors. You will see the GHS in the community throughout the year running fundraising events. The support they receive from the public at these times is essential in aiding them to be able to care for all the animals that arrive at the shelter. If you are ready to show that you care and want to become a fundamental partner with the shelter in making a limitless impact in the lives of so many animals, get involved and participate in their three major fundraisers. 2012 SUMMER

An inspirational couple brings hope to Uganda children by Heather Grummett

Bruce and Lorraine MacPherson are a dedicated and inspirational Guelph couple who are making a dramatic difference in the lives of a group of children in Africa. In 2008 the couple first visited Mbale, in Uganda, Africa to assist with a local project. However, once they arrived they realized that more pressing help was needed at the Nyondo Demonstration Primary School, just outside of Mbale. The school, constructed in 1910, was closed when Idi Amin declared that girls did not require schooling, and remained closed until the 1980s when girls were once again permitted to attend school. Nyondo has over 1600 children, with up to 100 students per class, plus the school houses and helps orphaned children and deaf mute children. Located in a very poor area, there are not proper funds available to provide upkeep to the school. The Guelph couple fell in love with the project. With the support of the Rotary Club of Guelph-Trillium, the Rotary Club of Guelph and other support from friends and individual donors, the MacPhersons became devoted to rebuilding the primary school. Anyone who has heard them speak of the students is immediately touched by their overwhelming passion. Bruce and Lorraine returned to Uganda in 2010 for almost a month too oversee the completion of the projects started in 2008. The school received new showers and toilets, the blackboards were repaired or replaced, and 2,000 feet of fencing was installed to protect the school and children. A new cookhouse was built and stoves were provided to replace the shed where food was cooked in pots on the floor. Plus soccer uniforms were provided, which the students had never had. When Bruce heard from the school principal of a program that was running in Kenya, which gave a free diagnosis to deaf children, he came home and worked to raise the funds needed for the school to rent a van to take 11 children to Kenya. Of those children, eight qualified for hearing aids and they are now hearing for the first time in their lives.

The Guelph couple returned to Uganda in 2012 to assist with renovations to an old run down building, which had not been used since 1910 when the school was first built. The funds raised for this project repaired and painted the building to create a space for 60 local orphans. Beds, mattresses, blankets, uniforms and schools supplies were purchased and Lorraine even took 60 teddy bears with her from Canada for each child. Lydia, the school Principal obtained approval from the current guardians to move the children. Aged 6 to 12, they currently slept on the floors with family, friends or neighbours and had never had a bed. The 30 bunk beds allowed the 60 girls to move in where their meals, clothing and education will be provided, plus a lady was hired to watch over the children at night. Once the completed project is successfully operating for one year, the Government will provide annual funding for operations. Each time the MacPhersons return to Africa, they travel by paying for their own flight, accommodations and expenses. Giving generously of their time, money and hearts, they are both extremely passionate about the children at the Nyondo Primary School. It is important to them that 100% of the funds raised go directly to improving the conditions for the children. When speaking with Bruce it obvious that while he and Lorraine have improved the lives of these children and future children, it is overwhelming how much these children have touched their hearts and their lives. Now at the age of 82, Bruce and his wife intend to return in 2013 to focus on new projects including fixing the windows and perhaps building a library. If you are interested in donating to this project, cheques are accepted to The Rotary Club of Guelph-Trillium and please indicate the Nyondo Project. Tax receipts are available. Cheques can be mailed to Bruce MacPherson at 8 Sharon Place, N1H 7V2.

The Guelph Wellington Seniors Association way ahead A group of Guelph seniors came together in 1987 to serve the common needs and interests of seniors in the community. From meagre beginnings, this group of dedicated citizens grew to become incorporated in 1988 as a not-for-profit operation, The Guelph Wellington Seniors Association (GWSA). This year, 2012, will celebrate the Association’s 25 years of existence. In that time, the GWSA has become a leader in offering innovative programs, activities and services for seniors from the Evergreen Seniors Community Centre, its home for the last 20 years. It is the envy of other Older Adult Centres in other communities throughout Ontario, both large and small, as well other centres across Canada. With the success and repu-

tation enjoyed by the GWSA comes responsibility. While advocacy on behalf of seniors in many areas of concern has been one cornerstone of the Association, the ongoing well-being of its members and seniors in the community at large has been served by the GWSA sponsored Community Support Services. This group concerns itself with seniors in need, dealing with issues that they can handle first hand and referring more serious situations to the appropriate community health providers. As we move forward to an unknown future, the GWSA will continue to grow and take proactive steps to reach further into the senior’s community to live and promote our mis-

sion: “To Empower Older Adults to be active, to be involved and to age successfully.” The Association works very closely with the city and are involved in the city’s move to becoming a fully age friendly community. Other efforts are being made to bring greater focus to the health and security needs of seniors. This will be accomplished through ongoing seminars and educational sessions. The Association looks forward to a more informed and aware membership and seniors community through its ongoing efforts. Visit www.gwsa-guelph.ca for more information.

The 1600 students at Nyondo will benefit greatly from the several projects that were organized by the Guelph couple, with the support from local Rotary Clubs and individual donors.
