A vision for Fisherman’s Wharf S

tories of sculpting classes, surf and turf dinners, picking out live crabs, searching for shells in the gift shop, etc. — all such things came from Oxnard’s currently bruised and beaten Fishermen’s Wharf in its heyday. Historically speaking, Fisherman’s Wharf is truly an iconic part of Oxnard and even Ventura County, but the insistence on tearing it down for high-end rentals seems misguided. The topic of the future of Fisherman’s Wharf is scheduled to come before the Oxnard Planning Commission on Aug. 22.

The master plan for Channel Islands Harbor, mapped out in the 1970s, is visible today: Apartments here, lodging there, boat amenities throughout and food and entertainment options sprinkled along the main drives of the harbor. That includes Fisherman’s Wharf. It had so much potential, Martin V. “Bud” Smith’s grand vision of the harbor, fun for family and visitors and pride in business ownership, but the wharf, Casa Sirena and the Lobster Trap just faded into oblivion.

The solution for tax revenue generation now: more apartments.

It’s curious that certain county supervisors and Oxnard City Councilmembers seem to lack understanding when it comes to carrying forward another person’s vision. But really, the solution to rehabilitation and the housing crisis is high-end rentals miles from the 101 to be built out sometime in years to come?

As many locals struggle to access affordable housing, who exactly will be renting these new apartments?

In speaking with Oxnard City Manager Alex Nguyen in the past, the answer to our affordable housing crisis remains new construction. But it is curious that our local real estate experts don’t keep track of vacancy rates of new high-end rentals, homes converted to vacation rentals, etc. Such information would be critical in determining not just what else is needed, but also what is not. With so many high end rentals on or coming to the market, from RiverPark to Wagon

e require someone to stand and point out illegalities and other grievances for us, because our default position on most things is “meh” … we just don’t care.

Wheel to the Reserve at Seabridge, plus the new Ventura Harbor apartments and those at Wells Road off the 126, maybe we need to consider what brought us to this point, an unsustainable model for the future as our homeless population increases.

The California Coastal Commission always prioritizes access for tourists, including in housing-turned-vacation rentals at the cost of coastal residents.

Even at least one local judge supported it: Cal Coast Times reporting on Feb. 29 that “A Ventura County Judge issued a tentative ruling last week striking down the city of Santa Barbara’s ban on short-term vacation rentals near the coast. [Cal Coast Times]” In reality, justice and bureaucracy show a clear track record of favoring higher income people, and in this instance, those who can rent costly apartments to expensive vacation rentals, houses locals used to call home.

It’s become abundantly clear that when it comes to coastal access, it’s either for those who are directly located on the oceanfront, aka those who can afford it, or first come, first serve, leaving many residents of Ventura County without access to the coast themselves despite the premium paid in housing costs for location. So what exactly, again, is the plan for coastal access to the Channel Islands Harbor at Fisherman’s Wharf ?

Those who can afford it can live by it and those who can’t will wrestle for a parking spot due to cumbersome apartments limiting access.

Being a visionary is hard work. It takes time, persistence and support. But what is this grand vision for getting rid of the quaint village of Fisherman’s Wharf for more stucco, walls and locked doors with a Mediterranean feel? The vision seems dry.

Just think of what a real investment might do in resuscitating a discarded treasure. The payoff might be a much higher value than what high-end rentals could ever offer.

Got a new species of bug? Perfect. Drop it out here, let’s see how it does. We’ll do our part, submit pics to Google in vain, and remain baffled and amused to this day.

Want to follow him until he’s alone, then grab

two little buddies and try to rob him of his inventory? Good luck with all that. He’ll injure himself in the process, but you’ll fail miserably. That’s V.C. community outreach in action.

Want to keep the restrooms locked in Lyons Park, effectively eliminating bathroom access for miles? Well, we’ll probably want to talk about that one a bit, along with wondering how we have the only civil-rights hostile Starbucks around. We’ll note that they would rather lose all their loyal customers than let those darn homeless, also paying customers, charge their cell phones. I mean, I’m SURE they’re in favor of us coming up, they just can’t stomach the idea of being any part of it. They want us to be able to apply for jobs and handle our personal matters, they just don’t want to assist in any way whatsoever, and they’ll happily burn all their amenities in order to prevent it.

Locking the restrooms represents the sort of casual official cruelty this town is becoming known for. The “city that cares” is the city that hates. Who knew? Not me, until recently.

Want to write a thinly veiled hit piece versus specific individuals in our community, one based on lies and filled with mesmerizing passive-aggressive innuendos and threats? Okay. Again, no problem.

You singled out and identified my friends, placed a numerical value on them for taxpayers to ponder, putting a bulls-eye on them in front of a community you already know to be filled with rednecks and miscreants. One you’ve been specifically warned about (in print!) as a real live ongoing danger to your constituents.

What happens when one of your hobgoblins goes too far, injures one of The Oxnard 42?

After you put a public tag on them, you’ll be on the hook for what transpires. For all day. Liable.

Morally, ethically, financially. You are on the hook. Finally, speaking of the hook, should I mention who you’ll meet at the pearly gates at the end, who will be reviewing your works over your lifetime?

What’s the one thing all those guys have in common? Yep. Unhoused. Best of luck with that.

news In Brief LA SHERIFF’S DETECTIVE WILL SERVE THREE YEARS FOR SEX WITH CHILD

Agoura resident Neil David Kimball was sentenced in Ventura County Superior Court for the maximum sentence of three years at state prison and ordered to pay $50,000 to the victim as a result of being convicted of child molestation. Kimball must also register as a sex offender.

Kimball met the victim in 2017 when he was a detective with the Special Victim’s Unit of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. The 15-yearold child had reported that she was a victim of sexual assault in Los Angeles County. Kimball was investigating the case, developed a relationship with the child and ultimately was charged and convicted of committing lewd acts and sexual intercourse with a child.

The case was prosecuted by the Ventura County District Attorney’s Sexual Assault and Family Protection Unit.

Ventura County 99s Santa Paula female pilot to perform at Wings Over Camarillo

ince she started taking flight lessons in 1994, Judy Phelps is now among one of only 6 percent of females in the population of pilots, and largely credits her flight success to the Ventura County 99s.

“These are a great group of gals and I wouldn’t be where I am today without them,” said the 56-year-old resident of Santa Paula.

The local chapter is part of the Southwest Section of the Ninety-Nines, Inc.: International Organization of Women Pilots, a nonprofit organization comprised of more than 6,000 women who promote the advancement of aviation through mutual support, scholarships and education. Local members include military pilots and generational aviation pilots, as well as professionals who fly for the movie industry, airlines, government entities and corporations.

“We have a big presence here with over 100 members, and our chapter does a really good job of promoting women in aviation,” said Phelps, who was recognized by the chapter as the Woman Pilot of the Year in 2006 and named the 2008 Professional Woman Pilot of the Year by the southwest section of the organization.

Aligning with this year’s theme, which commemorates the 75th anniversary of D-Day, event highlights include a parade led by World War II veterans as grand marshals. There will also be displays of more than 200 classic cars along with old and new military planes and helicopters. A STEM pavilion will feature the skills of local students participating in a robotics contest.

“For the first time we will have pyrotechnics during our WWII military aircraft combat performance,” said Linda Ehrlich, the event’s secretary and marketing director. “We also will be hosting the FIRST Robotics Competition of 2019 as part of our enhanced STEM Pavilion, sponsored by California Lutheran University.”

Wings Over Camarillo, presented by California Aeronautical University, is hosted by the Camarillo Wings Association, a nonprofit organization that has donated nearly $175,000 to local charities over the past nine years.

INCREASED AIRCRAFT ACTIVITY

Ultimately 35 aircraft will be arriving at Navy Base Ventura County, Point Mugu, for a Large Force Exercise in August. Models of the planes will include F/A-18s, E-2Ds and F-35s.

The exercise is aimed at “unit-force training,” which, according to the U.S. Navy Surface Force Training Manual, will ensure that pilot and crew are familiar with “basic command and control, weapons employment, mobility (navigation, seamanship, damage control, engineering, and flight operations) and warfare specialty,” with a focus on the Point Mugu Sea Range.

Residents in and around Camarillo and Oxnard could hear additional noise from the jets, but statements from the base say all operations will take place during daylight hours. Most activity is expected between Aug. 19 and 24. The operation is set to conclude by Aug. 25.

SUPERVISORS APPROVE PLAN TO PLANT TWO MILLION TREES

On Aug. 6, the Ventura County Board of Supervisors voted unanimously to plant 2 million trees over the next 20 years on county owned lands as part of the update to the land use rules of the county.

Linda Parks, Supervisor from District 2, said in a letter to the board that the trees are needed “because trees play a major role in combating global warming.”

During public comment John Davis, a resident of Upper Ojai, said the plan needed to be rethought because most of Ventura County is “chaparral” or “riparian” habitat and planting that many trees could negatively impact those areas.

The plan allocates $50,000 each year to cover the cost of planting and maintenance of the trees.

OXNARD COLLEGE LAUNCHES DREAM CENTER

On Aug. 14 Oxnard College celebrated the grand opening of the new Dream Resource Center to provide support services for undocumented students and families. Services at the center include, “Know Your Rights” workshops, Dream Act application help and mental health services.

Part of the center includes a “Dreamer’s Club,” which according to the college’s website, aims “to create a safe space for all students in which our AB-540 students and Allies work to educate and empower our community.”

AB-540 was signed into law in 2001 and allows legal permanent residents, undocumented college students and citizens to apply for instate college tuition.

The center, located in the Associated Student Government Building, room 109 and is open Monday and Thursday 8 a.m – 5 p.m., Tuesday and Wednesday 8 a.m. – 7 p.m. and Friday 8 a.m. to 12 p.m.

RANCHO SIMI BANS RODENTICIDE

Citing concerns about long-term impacts to wildlife, the Rancho Simi Recreation and Park District Board of Directors voted to ban the use of rodenticides for managing pests. The change will impact parks and facilities in Oak Park and Simi Valley. The ban includes first- and second-generation anticoagulants. Instead of poisons the district will use traps and other means to deal with unwanted rodents.

Anticoagulants have been under scrutiny by the public and environmental organizations for their effect on mammals and predators higher up the food chain. The poisons do not kill the rodent instantly, instead allowing the animal to move about while the poison causes internal organ failure. When affected animals are eaten by mammal or raptor predators, the poison can build-up, causing death.

VC ARTS COUNCIL NAMES NEW PRESIDENT

Last month the Ventura County Arts Council named Wendy Osher president of the board of directors following the departure of long-time president Todd Collart.

“We have been advocating for the arts and providing arts opportunities and education to residents for over 20 years,” said Osher. “As facilitator for all county artists and arts organizations, we aim to share the valuable work we and our partners do with a broader population, and to increase communications within our robust arts community.” She said the council is planning to develop new support for their work in order to expand access.

Existing programs include “Arts and Juvenile Justice,” aimed at providing arts education to minors in the juvenile justice system, and a new program, “Spanish Language Poetry Open Mic,” to be held at the VCAC space at the Pacific View Mall.

Ventura County Public Works has announced the temporary closure and rerouting a portion of the Ojai Valley Trail due to construction on a diversion canal aimed at reducing flooding in the area. Beginning Aug. 15, bike riders and pedestrians will be directed to a detour using Santa Ana Road.

TEACHER, STUDENT IMPACT II GRANT ENABLES DIALOGUE, CREATION AND UNDERSTANDING

limate Change Champions explores causes and solutions to global climate change through an educational game for students.

Footprints in the Sand features interactive web-based projects, Socratic seminars, collaborative groups and community outreach to encourage students to see beyond their own footprint. Mirror Mirror engages students to question and evaluate the choices and mistakes they’ve made, ultimately molding their future selves.

These are among more than a dozen projects created by teachers from throughout Ventura County who received $10,000 in IMPACT II grants for developing innovative lessons for their students. IMPACT II is a curriculum sharing and recognition program for educators in kindergarten through grade 12 in all subject areas. Since 1993, Ventura County educators have received $388,500 in sponsor-funded grants.

OVERCOMING BIAS AND CREATING REAL-WORLD CONNECTIONS

Aliza Lederman and Danna Lomax, who teach seventh grade at Anacapa Middle School in Ventura, engaged students to explore the question: How can I overcome my implicit bias?

In this unit, entitled Walking Away from Implicit Bias, students studied Medieval Africa and the spread of Islam, read the novel A Long Walk to Water and wrote formal emails in support of Salva Dut’s organization, Water for South Sudan, a nonprofit with a mission to create access to and monitor safe drinking water for communities located in remote rural areas of South Sudan.

Students also undertook a long walk in order to empathize with the experiences of the Lost Boys of Sudan.

For Project Understanding: Little Buddy Heroes, teachers Kathy Elliott and Alyssa Soles at Pacific High School formed a partnership with Douglas Penfield Elementary and Easter Seals Preschool, where students served as teacher’s assistants in classrooms. A primary goal was to find a way to re-engage and connect students to their learning, many of whom have poor attendance and struggle in school, while challenging students to serve as

role models to their “little buddies,” as well as perform in a real-world career setting.

KIDTOPIA

Lisa Sage’s inspiration for Kidtopia occurred while she was on a family vacation in London and experienced Kidzania, an interactive city made for children that combines inspiration, fun and learning through realistic role-play.

Kidtopia, which targets pre-K to grade eight, was a new format for the typical career day in schools, said Sage, of Camarillo, a kindergarten teacher at Camarillo Academy of Progressive Education. “For an hour-and-ahalf, we let all the students — kindergarten through eighth — choose which careers to try out and work at within the mini town we had created in campus.”

This effort involved many volunteers from the community, and each presenter prepared a five-minute talk about his or her job and an activity related to some aspect of his or her career, such as a computer engineer who let students practice dismantling and reassembling an iPad or a forensic scientist who showed youngsters how to develop their own fingerprint. In other activities, a journalist gave students an assignment in which they interviewed different people on campus and wrote a news article for the school newspaper, and a Trader Joe’s employee who had them practice bagging groceries.

“For the first time, I saw kids running to presentations and excited about jobs and careers, because it was hands-on; the learning was real,” Sage said. “Students talked about the experience for months and some of the things learned were bigger than my original objectives. Most students wished that they had had more time to try out more careers,” Sage said.

The children did this through several activities, including engaging in a creative art project, Peaceful Me, in which they made selfportraits of their peaceful selves using mixed media. They also created Self-Love and Confidence books that included affirmations written by hand about themselves, such as “I’m beautiful,” “I’m always happy,” “My family loves me,” and “I’m smart.” They also worked on self-affirmations using flashcards, in which they wrote down a negative thought they had about themselves and ripped it up; then wrote the opposite thought on a new card that they taped into their cubbies.

“Kindness and peace is needed in our world,” said Noel of Ventura, who teaches with Hansmeier at Ventura Charter School.

MOMENT OF PEACE

WON’T YOU BE MY NEIGHBOR?

For the Moment of Peace project for grades two, three and four, Emily Noel and Kim “Flow” Hansmeier wanted to build student’s self-love, confidence and kindness so that they could then further spread that kindness towards others. In other words, the students worked on their inner peace so that they could spread peace to others.

During the middle of the project Won’t You Be My Neighbor? A Project to Renew and Connect Our Community, the Thomas Fire and Montecito mudslide occurred, putting it on hold for Ventura Charter School teachers Holly Johnson and Laura Bingham.

At first, they worried that their project had lost momentum. Instead, these events turned

the focus into a real-life opportunity for students to experience how a community can come together for the greater good.

Through social media, they connected with a kindergarten class from a school across the country who was involved in their own project on the impact of local fires on a community.

A teacher reached out and asked to collaborate with Johnson’s and Bingham’s classes to gather information for their project. They then began connecting with each other through Google Hangout, and the kindergarteners from the other school were able to ask questions of the Ventura students about their experience in the Thomas Fire.

This proved to be “a healing process” for students who had lived through the fire. They learned that there were many community helpers who came to the rescue of so many people, and although the fire was scary for many of them, there were so many helpers ✦ involved in keeping them safe.

In Philippine culture, a mestiza is a person of mixed Clevenger family: “Mama Beth” is a Filipina; her husband, Corky, is American. Together with their children, Leia and AJ, they opened Mestiza Kitchen in the spring of 2018 to showcase something different for Ventura County: Filipino fusion.

The results are delicious.

Located in the Gateway Village Shopping Center between SkyZone and Cronies, it’s a small and unpretentious, but inviting, space. The casual atmosphere is enlivened by colorful paint on the walls, photos of the Philippines blown up to poster size and two lovely murals. Before placing my order at the counter, I gazed longingly at the bakery case, displaying a fresh fruit tart (here called a “fruit pizza”), cookies, macaroons and the green and purple “Space Cake.” I knew, immediately, that I’d be saving room for dessert.

For our family of four, we selected the Malaking Combo, the Wing Plate, a Mestiza Lumpia Burger and a trio of pastries. We also ordered the fresh and delicious cantaloupe juice, although next time I might try the lemonade-like calamansi juice, light green and made with a citrus fruit common in the Philippines.

The Malaking Combo included lumpia (long, skinny Filipino-style egg rolls), chicken adobo sliders, imperial noodles and chicken skewers. The lumpia were hot from the fryer, crispy and wonderful. The shredded chicken in the sliders was delicately seasoned, but got a flavor

punch from the adobo glaze (soy sauce, vinegar and ginger) and a good crunch from jicama slaw. Sweetness came via the King’s Hawaiian buns. That’s a lot of flavor profiles for one sandwich to hit! Chicken thigh meat is used for the grilled skewers, which were plenty juicy but not overly seasoned; they lacked the flavor I’d enjoyed in the other items (a dip in vinegar or sweet and sour sauce improved things). The imperial rice noodles were quite simple, but made an appealing complement to the more assertive dishes.

The Wing Plate, which featured chicken wings in a sticky glaze made from soy, vinegar, ginger and garlic, was a big hit. Crispy and rich, the wings were so flavorful — and a far cry from the bar food basic. The combination came with more of that tasty lumpia and some rice — again, a very simple side, but a good foil to all the richness. Mestiza Kitchen’s food, in general, is very tasty, but on the heavy side.

We also loved the lumpia burger. The patty was made from lumpia filling — a blend of seasoned ground pork, ground turkey and vegetables — and paired with jack cheese, garlic aioli, homemade pickles, a fried egg and a King’s Hawaiian bun. An intriguing mix of flavors and textures that were a little bit Filipino, a little bit American . . . and a whole lot delicious.

Many of Mestiza Kitchen’s desserts contain produce native to the Philippines, and thus seemed completely original (for Ventura County). Ube, or purple yam, was a frequent ingredient, and gave the Swiss roll-like Space Cake a distinct purple color. Its bright green filling came courtesy of the tropical plant pandan. The very popular Ube Crinkle Cookies are beloved for their chewy texture as well as their fun hue. Not purple, but still delightful, were the calamansi bites, similar to shortbread with a hint of citrus, and the chocolate-dipped macaroon.

I wasn’t familiar with Filipino cuisine before going into Mestiza Kitchen, so I can’t speak to authenticity.

But it was a wonderful culinary adventure for the entire family, with new and interesting flavors and unexpected combinations. The Ventura County dining scene is definitely more colorful — and not just from the ube! ♦

his film feels personal to me. Why else would you pick a topic about Pentecostal snake handlers, a secluded Appalachian community, and illicit romance? It’s a chance you take because you want to veer far off the beaten path.

Mara Childs (Alice Englert) is on the verge of making an important choice. Her beau, Garret (Lewis Pullman), is ready to ask her father, Pentecostal preacher and devoted snake handler Lemuel Childs (Walton Goggins), for Mara’s hand in marriage. The community supports the idea. Garret appears to be a good match: faithful to the church, employed and deeply in love.

Mara works with women in the church to design a quilt as an engagement gift. But as the film reveals early on, she has a secret. She loves Augie (Thomas Mann), the son of Zeke (Jim Gaffigan) and Hope (Olivia Colman) Slaughter, an influential family in the church.

To further complicate matters, Mara and her best friend, Dilly Picket (Kaitlyn Dever), visit Hope’s local grocery store. Mara steals a pregnancy test off the shelves. Unknown to Augie and the rest of the community, she is carrying his baby.

All my girlfriends think it was too harsh, but my guy friends think it was the right thing to do and said they block people all the time. Why the difference in opinion?

It actually isn’t surprising that your male and female friends have differing reactions to your blocking the dude. Psychologist Simon Baron-Cohen’s research suggests that women are born empathizers in a way men are not — meaning that from early childhood on, women are driven to notice and identify others’ emotional states. They tend to be deeply affected by others’ feelings and are emotionally triggered into a sort of fellow feeling (empathy). Men, on the other hand, tend to be “systemizers,” driven from early childhood on to identify the “underlying rules” of the inanimate world, like those governing the operation of machines, abstractions (such as numbers), and objects (like a soaring baseball).

Of course, men aren’t without empathy. But research consistently finds women higher in empathy than men. Law professor and evolutionary scientist Kingsley Browne observes in Co-Ed Combat: The New Evidence That Women Shouldn’t Fight the Nation’s Wars that women’s “greater empathy may be responsible for the heightened guilt and anxiety that women feel about acting aggressively.” Browne cites brain imaging

research by neuroscientist Tania Singer that suggests men’s empathy for a wrongdoer “may be more easily ‘switched off,’ ” and observes that “men’s diminished empathy for those who ‘deserve’ punishment probably increases their willingness to kill the enemy” in war.

Recognizing that you, as a woman, might have a propensity to be “nice” to people who don’t deserve it can prompt you to recheck your decisions to go easy on somebody. Don’t expect it to feel comfortable at first when you stand up for yourself; you’re buck-

However, when a woman needs to make trade-offs between hunkaliciousness and character to land a long-term partner, it surely pays to relax a little on physical criteria: go for a really good man who’s good enough in the looks department.
