THE NEW ICONIC GLACIER 1957 MODEL To celebrate its 60th anniversary, VUARNET has produced a limited edition of the Glacier 1957.

This version, restricted to 600 pairs, echoes the original model with three color variations: a blue, white and red triptych in homage to the brand’s French roots. The mirror effect of the blue, silver and red mineral glass lenses matches the coating of the metallic cable hooks and contrasts perfectly with the matte black finish of the metal and acetate frames. The punched leather of the detachable side shields reinforces the sporty feel of the Glacier 1957.

The Glacier 1957 is the ideal blend of style and function, the very essence of VUARNET since 1957, and suggests elegance in motion.

WIN by ERIC LIPSEY

Most of us have heard the proverbial story of David versus Goliath. Whether you fully believe in the story or not, there’s a valuable lesson that can be learned from it. If you’re not familiar with the story, here’s a little snippet. David was a 12-year-old boy who was unafraid to go out to fight a skilled warrior by the name of Goliath. He was famed for his giant stature.

spending adequate time improving our weaknesses? The business world can be daunting, especially in the startup stage of development. There are many challenges. We are often required to learn things that we never intended to learn such as accounting, finance, marketing and strategic planning as well as adapt to the ever changing world of social media.

One of the best things we can do to remain prepared is to never stop learning. Once we’ve learned all we need to know, the next step is to find out what we don’t know we need to know. Basically, there is no end to learning. “In a world of change, the learners shall inherit the earth, while David was no fool when it came to offense or defense. the learned find themselves beautifully equipped for a When he was offered heavy armor and a sword to face world that no longer exists.” – Eric Hoffer the mighty Goliath, he refused it, choosing to only go into battle with a slingshot. LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

Spring has sprung. It is time for growth. It is time for change. I see this time as an opportunity for us a human race to be better today than we were yesterday. To not only be aware of how we treat others, but to make conscience efforts to educate and enlighten ourselves on the matters effecting each fiber of our being. It’s time to make constructive and behavioral changes within ourselves. Changes to create positive differences in all living beings and for this extroardinary planet we are fortunate to live on. Take heed on how you invest your time and money. From the paper (or plastic) in your wallet to the fork in your hand, the choices we make each day dictate our future and the future of our loved ones. Pay attention. See yourself in others. It requires selflove and humility to understand we are all connected. May Mahatma Gandhi’s wise words resonate with you,“Be the change you wish to see in the world.” Thank you for taking the time to read this issue.

MY SISTER’S KEEPER BY JESSICA LIPSEY

“I do not know. Am I my brother’s keeper?” Cain replied to God when asked about his brother Abel’s whereabouts, as a lie, after killing him out of jealousy for God’s acceptance of Abel’s sacrifice and disapproval of his. This phrase, “my brother’s keeper,” meaning to protect and watch over, or keep someone else is used as an adage for showing kindness, understanding or acts of love, despite feelings of envy, fear, or pain.

I have been blessed to witness a story that is a manifestation of self-less, beautiful love. This is a story between sisters and family that proves sisters can also be keepers. It is undeniable that there is a bond between sisters that often goes beyond words or expression. Maybe the reason for such a deep connection is shared experiences, common genetics, or being raised in the same culture. Oftentimes, this bond involves arguments, jealousy, and misunderstanding, but these struggles usually mean that two individuals must overcome differences and continue to be keepers. However, rarely is one able to give the other the gift of life. Sharon and Ericka are sisters with a heartfelt experience. Their story began long before the events which will be shared here, but we can start when they decided to move from their hometown in rural Alabama to the suburbs of Detroit. It was certainly a bold move, but they were in it together. Little did they know that being there for each other would bring a new life into the world. Although obvious parallels existed in their lives, things evolved quite differently. Longtime, witty friend, Norm, charmed Ericka into a relationship. They seemed to proceeed through life in a way our culture would consider unconventional. First came their two beautiful children, then their home and then marriage. Now a family of four, their lives were full and moving quickly. Around the same time, Sharon also met her soul mate, Keith. They got married, purchased a home and were ready to settle down and start a family. Everyone knew they wanted to have children of their own. It seemed like they were following all the rules, but regardless of how much they practiced,

the months would pass with increasing disappointment and diminishing hope. For Keith and Sharon, resorting to medicine was the next logical step. Extensive tests revealed that Sharon had little chance of becoming pregnant and her health was at risk because of fibroids and cysts in her ovaries and uterus. Both wanted to share the blessing of creating a child together. In-vitro fertilization was the best hope for becoming pregnant and having a child. This process involves hormone therapy that is expensive, difficult, and risky. For months, Sharon was injected with hormones to prepare her body for carrying a child. The hormones only exasperated her health issues. The cysts grew, causing Sharon to feel extremely ill. Due to uncontrollable pain, she was hospitalized on several occasions. Numerous surgeries were required to remove cysts and scar tissue in order to prepare her body to conceive a child. However, these surgeries were unsuccessful and the only remedy for pain relief and a normal life was to have a full hysterectomy, eliminating the possibility for Sharon to bear children. This experience was extraordinarily difficult for the couple. Their lives became one of grief, defeat and disappointment. Recovery was not without complications, and was often uncertain for Sharon. Ericka and her family were supportive, always wanting the same fullness of life for Sharon as they had. In a way, they were all keepers. Although Sharon’s body had been through tremendous trauma, she recovered to good health over time. cont... VENTREMAGAZINE.COM

Q2•2017

Keith and Sharon had relentlessly refused to forfeit their dreams of having a family of their own, now they had essentially given up hope. Opposed to adoption, surrogacy seemed the only answer to making their family complete, but who would carry their child? Ericka was not interested in carrying and delivering another baby. She felt her time of bearing children had passed. She understood firsthand how demanding pregnancy could be on her family and her body. She had already been through it twice. All of these things were taken into consideration, but Ericka was her sister’s keeper. Ericka felt her sister’s grief and decided to serve as her hope. She believed God called her as a vessel to bring Keith and Sharon’s child into the world. Ericka began hormone therapy in preparation to carry her sister’s child. The fertilization was a success! It was as if the myriad of challenges up to this point lead to this scenario. Both families were able to share this intimate experience of growing a family with each other and loved ones. The baby’s gender was kept a secret. Across the country, eager friends and family members watched as they streamed a live video of the big reveal. Everyone eagerly observed as a box was opened revealing pink balloons flowing into the backdrop of the beautiful blue sky. The hearts of those watching were filled with love and their eyes with tears of joy.

The baby shower was an extension of the abundant love and support of friends and family. Everything was adorned in pink and gold. Her name was embroidered onto blankets, matching shirts and other elegant décor.

Even strangers, who heard their story, came together in support. A woman whom they’d never met burned a candle in prayer, up to the very moment she was born. Norm video-streamed this unforgettable moment to share with all whom had partaken in their journey. This story is about two sisters. Two sisters whose story is the opposite of Cain and Abel. It is a manifestation of the beauty in being another’s keeper.

THE GOLD MIND

THE

GOLD MIND

with Lauren Goldstein

ARE YOU PAVLOV’S DOG?

Today you have bells around every corner - DING! There are emails, texts, pizza delivery, relationships and online dating playing with your inner brain’s reward system. How do you know when you have been conditioned to be someone other than who you think you are?

Lets travel back in time, shall we? Let’s go back to 2004. There are no iPhones, Facebook was just beginning at Harvard, and snail-mail still was the dominant method of communication. Then something miraculous happened. It seems everyone became connected overnight. Smart phones now ruled the Internet waves. No one called home phones anymore. If you weren’t on Facebook, you simply weren’t anyone of note. Now here we are, 13+ years later, slaves to the digital age. One would be hard pressed to find anything that didn’t have an app. For heaven’s sake, you can date, drink, eat, and travel within the confines of your smart phone. Where does that leave the adventurous entrepreneurs of the world? To answer that question you have to go back to your birth. When you are born you are a tabula rasa or blank slate, according to English philosopher John Locke. From the moment you take your first breath, you become a sponge. Learning what to say, think, feel, and know from those around you and the experiences you perceive. You take in the world with no filter. You don’t develop cognitive reasoning skills or the forethought to question what you are told until roughly age 11. That translates to over a decade of subconscious conditioning by your 36  VENTRE

parents, society, institutions, friends, etc., as you are thrust into high school, college, and career. As you go through your life, you begin to color in your blank slate. You are taught what to like, what to dislike, what to love and what to hate. The lucky few are taught that they have value and that their dreams are worth chasing. The rest struggle with an inner turmoil the devil himself wouldn’t want. How can you make your dreams and aspirations fit within the social condition that permeates your every cell? You might be asking what this has to do with professionals and entrepreneurs. The answer, everything! The question I want you to focus on today is what are you allowing to condition your life? Are you allowing people who are not paying for your life dictate your life choices? Are you allowing smallminded people to talk you out of your dreams? Are you allowing the news and gossip to condition you into a state of fear? Are you allowing the old way of doing things condition you in the present? Are you allowing your past to condition you into thinking that your future will always be just out of reach? Most of us are taught that you need to go to school and get a good job to be successful, but that is the conditioning of our forefathers who were brought up in the industrial age. The digital age you find yourself in today is one of unexplored possibility and a game of speed chess. Every day you wake up asking, “how can I stay one step ahead of the tech

“Just as you learned how to exist as a child, you can unlearn the conditioning that is holding you back. You can break the mold and welcome the fear of being an outsider to embrace the destiny that is in front of you.. ”

curve and your competition?“

The social economy that is booming right now takes no prisoners and only demands one thing of you, constant change. If you are tied to the old ways of doing anything, you will perish. If you are like a mighty unyielding oak, the storm will topple you. If you don’t at least keep up with the ever changing technical landscape, you will soon find yourself not only behind, but irrelevant. That may seem harsh and bleak, but there is a silver lining. You can outsmart your brain and your conditioning to insulate you from the raging electrical storm inside your mind and your technology. In the past you have been conditioned to base your worth on your title, bank account, house, car or wardrobe. This thinking robs you from the beauty of this life by thinking you are less than, more than, smarter than, richer than anyone else. There will always be people above and below us, but their success, wealth, and love doesn’t mean there is less for you. What it means is that there is hope. What they have achieved in life is also possible for you, but you have to undo decades of conditioning to get there! For those of us that put our entrepreneur super capes on, the landscape of the world looks different. It is filled with complexity, failing forward, being uncomfortable, and a roller coaster of euphoric

highs and can’t-see-your-hand-in-front-of-your-face, dark lows. Remember to resist the temptation to compare your behind the scenes to everyone else’s highlight reel. Work hard to not allow yourself to be put into tiny glass silos of who you think you have been conditioned to be, the one society thinks you should be, the one your family thinks you should be and the one you think you should be. Instead use the glass as a mirror, a mirror reflecting your true essence. Let it reflect your unconditional goals, dreams, and aspirations. Condition dictates so much of our lives, habits, perspectives, language and relationships. It dictates self worth, but it doesn’t have to. Just as you learned how to exist as a child, you can unlearn the conditioning that is holding you back. You can break the mold and welcome the fear of being an outsider to embrace the destiny that is in front of you in three simple steps. First: Get cozy with your intuition, which is that gut feeling you get walking into deals, meetings and relationships. Learn to trust it, harness it and follow it. It will be scary and uncomfortable until your mind gets acclimated to the unraveling of your prior subconscious conditioning. Second: Look at your habits. Your conditioning is expertly woven into those every day habits. Everything from how you start your day to the route you take to work is conditioning. If you want to reach success you are going to have to weaken the autopilot pull of conditioning to get into the proactive driver seat of your life. Third: Ask more questions. I find that the more curious you are, the less of a hold your prior conditioning has on you. When you become an evergreen student, you expose the blind spots, weaknesses and self-sabotaging behavior that keep you where you are. When you learn something new, share facts, and challenge the status quo, you break free to the other side of conditioning where there are no boundaries, glass ceilings or insurmountable mountains. There you will see that the world is truly your oyster.

THE JOURNEY OF NOT KNOWING HOW 21ST CENTURY LEADERS CAN CHART A COURSE WHERE THERE IS NONE

Excerpt

I spent the first half of my youth in a treehouse, or at least that is where my mind lived. While the neighborhood children rode bicycles, played board games, and paged through storybooks, I perched in my treehouse thinking about how I could make it better. I’d look up into the upper branches of that big maple tree and wonder which of them could hold another seat, one high among the leaves that could be reached by an interesting

progression of winding wooden slats, or one that would allow me to see farther across the neighborhood. You never knew who or what was out there, or how it would feel to be tucked up among the leaves with a lot of sky overhead and human activity below. That is, until you put those ideas into motion. Every year I figured out a new design. Then my brother set to work building it. I don’t wish to suggest I never rode bicycles, played board games, or read books. While I enjoyed those activities, my mind was forever pulled by the dreams of how could I create an environment that was more satisfying, useful, or compelling. I was a rather shy kid, and I noticed most of my friends found their bicycles and board games more interesting than my ideas. That made me nervous. Yet I continued to dream. Dreams fed me. Even better was actualizing them. Cut to a few decades later. It was just after lunch. My blood sugar had peaked and was spiraling downward into a midafternoon lull. I sat in a small, sunny office opposite the CEO of a large, wellknown company. We were exchanging random thoughts and anecdotes as we waited for the rest of the meeting attendees to assemble. At one point, we talked about

what it was like to have a moment of stability when at least some of the trains were running on time. It felt good to get to a place where not all actions required a major negotiation due to lack of procedures. Then we stopped, both of us sounding a little bored. The CEO said, “Every time I feel things starting to get calm, I have to turn them on their edge.” I chuckled. “Yes, and every time you do that, my life becomes insane.” He let out one of his signature volcanic laughs. I spent four years navigating Jeff Bezos’ constant shifts in direction as we experimented with the new global business model called ecommerce. Our post-lunch conversation took

“Benezet shows very simply how we become trapped by our hooks into endless dreary cycles of limitation, and how we can liberate ourselves into the vast opportunities that await when we risk stepping beyond the known.” — Susan Cannon, PhD, co-author of The Way of the Mysterial Woman: Upgrading How You Live, Love, and Lead

place in 2001. I had been at Amazon for three years as its first global real estate executive. My job was to capture the company strategy and convert it into bricks and mortar, no easy matter when the company strategy traveled at the speed of bits and bytes and real estate travels at the speed of bricks. The asynchronicity of the two worlds posed major challenges. At the same time, I thrived on it. The comment Bezos made to me resonated deeply. There was something familiar about the unease that comes with trying a new idea and then embarking on the adventure to see it through. Finding and Avoiding Our Leadership Edge During thirty-five years of business life, I have met many people like me. They showed up in every industry, geography, and size of organization. What we shared was a hunger to raise the game, take chances, and move things into a better future for our organizations. Our yearning often landed us in leadership roles, taking us through many unmarked pathways. We had an idea of where we wanted to end up, but until we got there, the outcome was unknown. Not knowing was scary, and scary was okay. What we also shared, along the way, was how we inevitably tripped over our own blind spots and landed in box canyons we pretended weren’t there. In reality, they were places to escape from the discomfort of not knowing whether our dreams would turn out. Eventually, with the help of intervening events, conversations, or moments of self-reflection, our hunger to see a new idea come to fruition took over. It allowed us to push past our discomfort to make our dreams come true, or find new ones that worked better.

JULIE BENEZET

One constant in Julie Benezet’s life has been the pursuit of adventure. As a child growing up in Colorado, she was a “nature girl” who spent countless hours tracking down unusual butterflies, building tree houses (then jumping off of them), and constructing model towns in the backyard sandbox. To this day she loves exploring intriguing urban spaces. From her time spent in France between her junior and senior years of high school, where she learned to speak French and embrace other cultures, to the time she left Vassar College for Cornell University, seeking wider pastures, Julie has placed a strong value on learning and creating organizations where that happens. She came by that value honestly if not inevitably. Her father was a college president for 30 years who was known for building campuses and institutional programs. Through her father she met a lot of extraordinary thought leaders who inspired her with their single-mindedness for achieving greater things in the world. After getting a BA degree from Cornell with majors in psychology and anthropology, she immigrated to Canada with two suitcases and a dream of practicing psychology. She says it’s the craziest thing she’s ever done, something that became evident the day a patient grabbed ahold of her waist long hair and wrestled her to the ground. She got out with her hair intact, but the event had the impact of moving her from psychology to law, a place where she could organize businesses, keep her hair, and get paid to argue. Pursuing dreams has molded Julie’s life. As a self-described hard wired entrepreneur she spent 25 years in law and business, putting into place the dreams of others as well as her own dreams. Aside from making her way through the back wards of psychiatric institutes, she has thrived in the back rooms of large corporations with senior executives, built Amazon’s first global real estate organization, and led for ten years the “Challenges of Leadership” program for executives at the Harvard Graduate School of Design, among many other accomplishments. More recently, she is the founder and owner of Business Growth Consulting, LLC and The Journey of Not Knowing, LLC where she has coached and mentored executives from virtually every industry. She is a sought-after speaker about leadership, teaches classes on the subject, and shares her professional insights in print and online. She holds a master of psychology and law degrees from McGill University and a B.A. in psychology and anthropology from Cornell University. Spending half of her youth at the base of Pikes Peak left a strong imprint. Julie loves mountains both for their metaphoric value of achieving greater heights and for their spectacular vistas where she loves to hike. Back at home, the most unusual thing in her desk drawer is her eighth grade diary, which is unreadable, as her handwriting is also an adventure.

perfect case study for the disruption of traditional foods is the dairy industry. Once a staple of the American diet, fluid milk consumption has been declining for decades. Since 1970, daily fluid milk consumption has dropped by over a third. In contrast, almond milk sales have risen 250% in the last five years. Why is consumption declining? From health and beauty concerns, to sustainability, to animal welfare, there are many reasons that people are drinking less cow milk.

Recent studies have debunked the long-held notion that dairy is critical for bone health. A study published in the British Medical Journal found that women with higher dairy intake had higher rates of bone fractures and a higher overall rate of death. Studies have also linked dairy consumption to certain types of cancer, and to weight gain and acne. The Harvard School of Public Health notes, “even low-fat milk is high in calories, and high levels of consumption may increase the risk of prostate and ovarian cancers.” Harvard’s “Healthy Eating Plate” does not include any dairy as part of a recommended healthy diet; instead, they suggest drinking water.

Concerns about the carbon and water footprint of dairy products, especially cheese and butter, are motivating environmentally-minded consumers to cut back. Harrowing undercover investigations at dairy farms have given pause to consumers concerned with animal welfare.

While much of the dairy industry is circling their wagons and encouraging government intervention, there are some companies that are changing with the times, or at least hedging their bets.

Some companies are taking even more innovative approaches. The start-up Perfect Day (perfectdayfoods.com) uses yeast to produce dairy proteins, thus creating milk without cows, without lactose, and using 98% less water than traditional dairy production. Miyoko’s Kitchen (miyokoskitchen.com) cultures cashews using traditional cheesemaking techniques to get the creaminess and tang absent from most vegan cheeses. SOLVING BACKPAIN THROUGH ELEGANT SENSING AND CUSTOM COACHING

Back pain is the most prevalent source of chronic pain, and the leading cause of disability for Americans under the age of 45. Working at desks, slouching over phones, and leaning over keyboards, millions of people put themselves at risk for back pain because of poor posture. Awareness of posture is key to transforming bad habits that form early and do damage over time. By holding your body in good posture, you strengthen your core and supporting muscles, building good musle memory and protecting your back. Good posture is also tied to everything from stress to confidence, appearance, and general well-being. So what if we had a sensitive and subtle way to know immediately when we started to slouch, a quiet reminder felt only by ourselves? The Lumo Lift approaches posture in a way that’s never been done before. Clipped onto your shirt, right below your collarbone using a secure magnetic clasp, the Lumo Lift tracks your posture and activity. Using subtle vibrations as feedback, it will gently vibrate to remind you to straighten up your posture every time you begin to slouch. Patented biomechanics monitoring sensors in the Lumo Lift use angle displacement as a measure to let you know when your body slouches away from what you’ve calibrated as your standard of good posture. The customizable time delay for vibrational feedback allows for a personalized posture coaching experience. With the integration of technology, the Lumo Lift is the agent of change needed to improve your posture long-term. Being able to consistently sit and stand with a posture that supports overall health and well-being involves learning with the body as well as with the mind. The Lumo Lift situates learning in real time, permitting you to make the steady small adjustments that quickly become vitally useful habits in daily life. L U M O B O D Y T E C H . C O M

They have partnered with AFRIpads in Uganda, which trains women to work for themselves making and selling reusable pads. Each pair of underwear you purchase helps to fund this cause. This cause in turn give girls access to protection during their cycle to help prevent them from missing school. According to the article, Women can Bleed Green on alternet.org, a woman throws away 250 to 300 pounds of feminine hygiene products in her lifetime. In addition the Ocean Conservancy found that tampon applicators made up 2.2% of debris on U.S. coastlines.

ules. We often like to think rules are meant to be broken. All the cool, dangerous and alluring types break all the rules. We are generally in awe of those types. However, if you think about it, rules give us the opportunity to thrive. I see it every day in children. If they are allowed to run loose and crazy, they feel insecure and stress. Children who know the rules are more confident and secure.

Why do we have rules? Well, let’s explore that for a moment. We have them for several reasons.

Whether you are a business owner, employee or run a household, you follow some rules. Certain criteria have to be met before you can go from one step to the next. For about 8 years, my husband and I owned and operated a bail bonding business. In the beginning, we were given some guidelines to follow (just enough to keep us out of trouble). After some time, we refined and created new rules that we needed to have in place when making decisions about whether we were going to take on a case. We were in essence a “bank” of sorts. In order for us to be able to give a “loan”, the criteria needed to be satisfied.

2008 to 2010 were some of the hardest financial years that we had ever experienced. The good news was that we didn’t give up and we also learned that nothing is ever terminal. We needed the lessons in order to get where we are today. Rather than just following our gut or following the advice of the 5 other “money” people we worked with, we needed

I would say that in the past, my husband and I really didn’t have any that we followed. We didn’t have any set up and quite frankly, I’m not sure that we knew how to set them up. No one comes to Mesa Grill to talk. But everyone is talking about Bobby Flay’s Mesa Grill. Every visitor who comes to reconnect with friends finds themselves in that same dilemma, so choose your time wisely in between every unforgettable and disarming Bobby Flay bite. Tiger Shrimp in a roasted garlic corn tamale and blue corn lobster tacos are previewing the main attraction in this foodie theater. This kitchen is passionate and they come to play. Calm your travel nerves over a cactus margarita and savor in the pure bliss that something special is being prepared for the main course. Spice-rubbed pork tenderloin with a bourbon ancho chile sauce seduced my eyes and sharing was not an option. Your judgment for my selfish and non-sharing ways will fall on deaf ears at Mesa Grill. My other half spoke in low hums and aahs as he eagerly devoured his Lobster with hominy cakes, all finished with a fresno chile butter sauce. Each plate is a piece of art, showcasing Bobby Flay’s signature use of textures, flavors, and colors. Mesa Grill doesn’t lack for personality in any way, shape or form. Oh, and save room for their deep dish banana cream pie garnished with a praline wafer and hazelnut brittle. The above will self-destruct shortly, your safeguarded secrets will never fall into the hands of your personal trainer. Vegas is good like that. 78  VENTRE

Eager to experience where the savvy Vegas locals break bread and swear you can get an authentic Italian meatball? Ferraro’s Italian Restaurant and Wine Bar has been a culinary delight and Vegas staple since 1985. Just a short $11 Lyft ride from Caesars Palace, day 2 of our journey brought us to this familyowned eatery where authentic Italian cuisine has been served fresh daily for 30 years. Ferraro’s is where you come to woo that client or celebrate the completion of your next big project over Lasagna Alla Gino or Risotto Arogosta. The fresh, homemade gnocchi is so light and airy, you’ll devour the plate and actually have room for dessert. The Ferraro family recipes bring southern Italy to this side of the Atlantic. This place is a true Vegas secret you’ll be glad you found. There is nothing incomplete about the Italian experience at Ferraro’s. Homemade pastas, sausages, breads and desserts dominate the menu. Safe Harbor Certified seafood and all natural beef are used and done so with utter pride. Feel free to ask questions, your ingredients have been so thoughtfully prepared. The staff is sharp and TYPE A is clearly a prerequisite to work here. Gino will proudly show you his world-class wine cellar. Ferraro’s Italian Restaurant and Wine Bar is Italian hospitality at its finest. A place where Gino and Rosalba Ferraro say, “casa mia è casa tua (my home is your home).” Think of it as such.

here is a synergistic relationship between the Mill House Studio and nature. This ever so charming twostory cottage has a water’s edge patio, large windows overlooking the Vaucluse Spring and the sound of water gently whooshing through the old millrace. The rush-hour traffic back home can’t be heard here, and the rooms are reflective of the well-manicured surroundings. Almost on cue, the most majestic butterfly appeared as we approached the front door of the Mill House Studio. After unpacking for the weekend and loading up our snacks in the mini-fridge, we played board games and listened to soft tunes. A break from cable news is exactly what the doctor ordered. Following a tumultuous rainstorm is often the unveiling of a colorful spectrum, formed by a bright dispersion of light and brilliant colors of the mythical and oh so beautiful rainbow. The Irish talk about the pot of gold and the lucky leprechaun at the end of the rainbow, but at which end is it? ork is an exciting and unique leather alternative. The production of cork material is exceptionally environmentally friendly thanks to the sustainability of the cork oak, the harvesting process and the industry’s concerns with maintaining a light environmental footprint. Cork oaks are a hearty and plentiful species of tree. The trees can be found Portugal, Spain, Morocco, Italy, Tunisia and France. Not only do these orchards provide income to a large number of skilled laborers, they also have been the base of the habitat for over twenty five thousand unique species. This includes a number of endangered species, such as the Iberian Lynx and Imperial Eagle. There are a vast number of cork orchards yet great care must be taken in harvesting the cork bark from the tree. A cork oak’s bark is unharvestable for the first twenty years of its life, therefore it wouldn’t be in the harvesters’ best interest to damage or kill the tree, since planting a new one in its place would greatly reduce their crops for the unharvestable years. The cork is harvested by harmlessly removing the bark from the tree and allowing a new layer to regenerate in its place, naturally, over a period of approximately nine years. This is renewable resource that does not harm the tree, making it the obvious choice for the environmentally conscious consumer. Aside from the sustainable benefits using cork has from an environmental standpoint, cork is also an optimal material for fashion. With its soft, silky texture, natural rustic look and hypoallergenic characteristics cork is a fashion forward material. Earth Cork products takes great pride in providing a smart and eco-friendly alternative to leather. It is our hope that our customers will not only be looked upon as trendsetters, but also as pioneers in a movement to use naturally regenerating and sustainable goods in place of animal products.

UNLIFE is an invite-only gathering of the nations top businessmen, influencers, misfits and entrepreneurs, all trying to kick a little dent into history. Come join 30 hand selected ruckusmakers for a weekend designed to amplify, disrupt, inspire, and build community. This is an intimate group event - You will speak up and be heard, you will be surrounded by people eager to learn and to share what they’ve learned in a completely unfiltered and raw setting. We’ll start Friday night and end Sunday around noon. This 3 day leadership retreat is intentionally designed for aggressive personalities with a desire to build intentional community, disrupt the status quo, and have real life changing impact through their work. UNLIFE was started because In 2013, for the Summer marketing campaign for RUCKUS, we thew a series of 3 Pool Parties in conjunction with RedBull. They were amazing. Thousands of people came, there was free food, drinks, national headlining acts for music, but at the end of the third party, we were driving away and had one of the most honest conversations as a brand we have ever had... We simply said “FOR WHAT?!” Don’t get us wrong, they were great parties, and we the brand got a ton of “impressions” (whatever that means), but at the end of it all, we were left feeling extremely

empty, and honestly, kind of worthless. We had raised a ton of money and thrown some huge parties. That was it. We weren’t helping anyone, we weren’t building DEEP or MEANINGFUL relationships or community. We were simply arranging convenient and shallow entertainment, nothing more. We knew that as a brand, as a company, and as responsible business owners and leaders, we had to develop something more. We had to develop something that actually meant something. At the core of what RUCKUS is, we want to only be about 2 things: 1) Bringing hope and confidence into a broken world. 2) Building Community. So - we switched our Summer marketing campaign the following year on its head (honestly, that’s probably giving ourselves too much credit, it was more of an experiment than anything). We set out to grow DEEP within our community and clientele, not WIDE. We thought; What would happen - if instead of growing shallow with 3 thousand people, we brought together some of the best leaders, trendsetters, and ruckusmakers we know and grow DEEP with only 30 people. A Manhattan Project of the new age. And with that, the Ruckus UNLIFE Retreat was born.

“If you are young, hungry, and want to be inspired by some of the best disrupters across all mountains of thought, this is the retreat for you” — Daniel Epstein UNreasonable Group

In 2002, Claude Tellis and Kareem Cook moved to Los Angeles and sought solutions that would positively affect the growing number of children that were suffering from childhood obesity. To affect change they realized that the best pathway to make a difference would be to change the access that children have to unhealthy snacks. Their determination took them a step further which lead to placing healthy vending machines in schools starting with Venice High School.

Prevention is our mantra. We believe in making healthy choices that prevent negative results. In that same spirit, we made a commitment to address health by offering products and education that would help protect and prevent by purchasing a leading vitamin and supplements company, Naturade, with a strong history that goes back to 1926.

Veganism perfectly matches our ideals as a company. We quickly realized that a well balanced plant based diet was an intricate part of preventing the ailments and challenges that we saw affecting our friends and family. As a result, we partnered with John Lewis, a vegan athlete as well as category and industry expert, on a plant based diet to co-develop a product line, VeganSmart, based on his formula, specifications and ideals.

Kareem Cook and Claude Tellis, committed to providing healthy choices at a local level partnered with Bad Boy recording Artist Styles P who’s reach and drive into health and wellness perfectly matched the goals of VeganSmart. Through this partnership, Styles P and VeganSmart created an exclusive flavor and brand uniquely suited for Styles P and his juice stores juicesforlife.nyc called Love is Love which features a new flavor Cookies and Cream.

T HEART AT WORK

he idea for Be good to people.® was inspired by a rude experience that founder Kris Wittenberg had back in the spring of 2008 while running errands at lunch. The exact bad experience has long been forgotten but the idea that people need to be better to one another has not. Once back in the office of her promotional products company, SayNoMore! Promotions, she exasperatingly asked, “WHY CAN’T PEOPLE JUST BE GOOD TO PEOPLE?” Given her entrepreneurial spirit, her experience creating logo’d products and her longing for a friendlier world, she decided to put “Be good to people.®” on a t-shirt and send a message to the world. BGTP, the brand and the movement, was instantly born. Everything about Be good to people.® is black and white because really, it is that simple. Kris’ passion and longing to pursue a kinder world filled her soul and heart, but the reality of running two growing companies finally proved to be too much. Kris had to make a choice; the needs of SayNoMore! Promotions, her rapidly growing promotions company, prevented her from fully immersing herself into Be good to people.® She knew in her soul that Be good to people.® was her life’s work and that it needed… deserved…her focused attention to make it the movement and sustainable business she knew that it was destined to be. Change, of course, doesn’t happen overnight. Kris and her husband gave thoughtful consideration to how they could make both SayNoMore! Promotions AND Be good to people.® a priority. The answer came through soul searching, countless meaningful conversations with peers, and one particularly impactful business meeting where it became

very clear to Kris that she was not living her true calling. She knew she had to take bold action. So, she registered and attended Oprah’s The Life you Want Weekend and journeyed to Seattle… of course wearing her favorite Be good to people.® shirt and Spreading the Good each day. The payoff was HUGE. She came away from that event inspired, validated in her decision to move Be good to people.® forward, and willing to take further courageous ACTION.

Kris continues to oversee the vision and direction of SNMP. She has entrusted her beloved husband, Augie, whose background in finance and his ability to oversee operations makes him the perfect person to oversee the day-to-day of SNMP under Kris’ continued leadership. Kris is now officially able to focus on developing Be good to people.®

As in any business, or in life in general, “no risk, no reward.” Kris is finally “in”. The Be good to people.® product line has grown from a simple shirt to a fashionable assortment of useful items that people see, wear, or carry throughout the day. And, we’ve learned that not only are the products cool and share an important message, but they inspire kinder and positive action. People behave better when they are wearing or using Be good to people.® gear or when they see it on someone else. They pause before reacting. They put someones’ needs before their own. They go out of their way to make another persons day.

Simply put, Be good to people.® creates infectious positivity. We invite you to participate in this amazing movement. Let entrepreneurialism, dreams, hopes and GOOD allow us to all live the life we want. And that, friends, is the magic of Be good to people.® We are thrilled to have you on this journey with us.

EVERY PURCHASE CREATES A KINDER WORLD. For every BGTP item sold, 5% of the sale goes to our 501c3 non-profit, The Be Good to People Foundation. We believe that giving back shouldn’t depend on how we spend our money and therefore we base our give back on sales, not how profitable we are. Isn’t it Good to know that there’s no question about how much of your purchase is contributing to a kinder world? We think it’s a pretty Good concept. Fueled by the 5%, donations, corporate, private and government grants, the BGTP Foundation creates and supports human kindness-centered events such as Bright Friday and 24 Hours of Kindness and recognizes people who are Being Good to People all over the world.
