SLEEVE FOR 13” OR 15” MacBook Pro $69.95 Tan **Also available in black

One of our most popular designs, back in its best shape ever. We’ve reworked every element of the praised Macbook sleeve design and made it even better. We started with the core, the materials, and developed every component with the highest possible attention to detail. Anti-slip dots provide maximized grip. The leather flap, with one snap button on the right, provides a simple closure and keeps your device secure. The rivets are lined to keep your Macbook from touching anything but soft, thick felt. When you take the sleeve in hand, you’ll instantly notice the quality of the materials. Felt is a sustainable and renewable material, offering durability while remaining soft to the touch. Felt can be easily cleaned, and a special treatment gives it excellent anti-peeling properties and makes the sleeve water repellent.

illian drove a vehicle that wasn’t very dependable. Needing to travel back to her hometown for work, she decided to drive it regardless of condition. A few hours from her destination, she noticed smoke coming from under the hood of the vehicle. She pulled over to the side of the road and prepared to make the journey on foot.

She’d travelled long into the day when she noticed the sun was setting. She hurried her steps knowing the light of the sun would soon be lost. If she didn’t reach her destination quickly she’d have to travel the length of the long, dreary tunnel ahead without light. As the sun slowly drifted from view, she realized the reality of her remaining journey. Fear gripped her as she approached the tunnel. Determined to reach her destination, she pressed onward. Her adrenaline pumped and her heart raced with every noise she heard. Just as she was thinking she should turn back, she saw a light. Knowing the end of the tunnel was much farther away than the distance she’d travelled, she was puzzled; yet she found comfort at the sight of it. As she moved closer to the light, she noticed the figure of a woman. After she reached the light, she realized it was her longtime friend Tara, who knew she’d be on the journey. When she saw Lillian’s car broke down on the side of the road, she went looking for her. Lillian was much relieved at the sight of her. She was thankful to have a friend who didn’t want her to face the journey alone. A friend, a torch and a little thoughtfulness helped her through the dark tunnel that night and she reached her destination. Sometimes the light at the end of the tunnel can be very far off as we make our journey through life. Having help along the way can mean more than we sometimes realize. Can you provide a torch for someone? Can you serve as a catalyst to help someone reach his or her destination? Be a difference maker. Be the torch in the tunnel!

LETTER FROM THE EDITOR It’s time.

2017 will be our 12th year of entrepreneurship. We have learned deeply about ourselves, business and each others’ strengths, weaknesses and potential. We’ve been asked by many over and over again to share our story. It’s a story of humility, sacrifice, courage and resilience. The location of the photoshoot was significant. We chose the place where we stood twelve years ago and looked into each others eyes with excitement and said those two proverbial words, “I do.”

Our love for each other then was light and yet to be truly tested. We’ve all read, listened and watched stories of defeat and triumph. Stories about those who suffered through many failures, yet never surrendered. Stories like these allow our hearts and minds to believe that anything is possible.

THE

GOLD MIND

with Lauren Goldstein

HOW TO CREATE WHAT YOU WANT IN 2017

I often joke that being an entrepreneur is not for the faint of heart. The truth is, it takes a special kind of grit to make your entrepreneurial dreams come true. I believe everyone has a soul calling, a problem only they can solve, yet so few ever run towards the call of their soul. They stay locked in the status quo except for the two weeks of the fast approaching resolution season. It’s a magical time of the year when we get reinvigorated about dreams and goals. We feel nothing is impossible. We make vision boards, declare goals to the world and make elaborate roadmaps outlining our journey towards the perfect year. For those two weeks, we stick to our guns and we run like mad towards the life we dream of having; however, the majority of us soon fall back to sleep. Today, I want to help you break the cycle of broken goals and resolutions so you can indeed have the best year yet. Are you Ready? Let’s do this!

GET CLEAR ON WHAT SUCCESS MEANS TO YOU I often work with clients who tell me they don’t feel successful or that their life is not a success, but when I press them for what success looks like, they have no idea. If you don’t know what success means to you, how will you know when you have arrived? I find this to be one of the most important puzzle pieces in achieving your goals. Figure out what success means to you, because only then will you be able to get after it. Is it monetary? Is it recognition or freedom? What makes your success meter go wild? UNCOVER YOUR PASSIONS 80% of your life is spent working. Never forget, the 20% is where life happens! Design your life first; then figure out a business that can work around that life. Longing for the weekend or wanting to do anything other than your “great work,” is a huge red flag indicating you’re not playing in your zone of genius. You’re off track! I also want to bust a myth. Your passion doesn’t have to be a what; it could be a how, why or who! Do you like working outside with your hands? Are you passionate about a cause? Is it that you want to make your daughter proud? If you’re not sure where to start, take these questions for a test drive. • What do I most love to do? • What work do I do that doesn’t seem like work? • In my work what produces the highest rate of

abundance and satisfaction to amount of time spent? • What is my unique ability? RECOGNIZE YOUR UPPER LIMITS This idea came from Gay Hendricks book “The Big Leap.” I think it is the secret sauce between the status quo and success. When I was reading his book on this subject, it was light bulb explosion after light bulb explosion. The premise is, we all have a self-imposed upper limit when it comes to success, abundance, and love. This upper limit causes extreme cognitive dissonance. This misalignment causes us to find ways to go back to a “safe” level and generally the fastest and surest way to get that accomplished is self-sabotage. Think about it! You have a huge client. You’re on top of the world. Later, you go home and pick a fight with your spouse over nothing. Upper-limiting, as Gay calls it, has some sneaky bedfellows: worry, criticism, projection, deflection, and conflict that make sure to keep us well below our limit. The great thing about this particular challenge we all face is, once you are aware of it, you can overcome it. Here are 2 great questions to start the deep dig: 1. How much love, success, and abundance am I willing to allow in my life? 2. How am I getting in my own way? It takes vigilance and time to break free from this addiction and create a new pattern but once you are on the other side, whoa boy…watch the pieces fall into place! Say it with me: “I expand in abundance, success, and love every day, as I inspire those around me to do the same. “ TAKE INVENTORY & CREATE YOUR VISION Before you make any plans for 2017, it is wise to first look at 2016. What can you celebrate? For what do you feel gratitude? Lastly, what went so fantastically horrific that you can learn from and avoid next year? Once you’ve got the perspective, I want you to dream bigger. I want you to imagine sitting there on December 31st, 2017 and looking back on your year. Make it visceral. Write down every aspect. Picture it in your mind and feel it in your body.

What did you accomplish? How did it feel? How do you feel now as you approach 2018? This is how you create a solid roadmap, live it in your mind and feel it in your body before the clock even strikes midnight! The truth is your mind cannot tell the difference between a life you imagine and the one that appears to be happening with your eyes open. Not sure you should believe me? Check out this neuroscience study, it will blow you away. GAIN CLARITY ON HOW YOU WANT TO FEEL As it relates to building on your vision above, I’ve found that if there is no feeling attached to it, you have about as good of a chance of accomplishing it as a snowball surviving in hell. When you look at what you want to accomplish personally and professionally, ask yourself this important question: “When I achieve this, how am I going to feel?” Use that emotion to anchor you to your goal. This emotion will create a mutual pull between you and your goal. Plus, we go through our days trying to increase pleasure or avoid pain. Harness that innate cognitive pattern for your benefit! TAKE ACTION Stop being the victim! Take 100% responsibility for your life, career, and relationships. Whether you realize it or not, the life you have before you is a life that you created. Your life will unfold from your fears or it will unfold from your dreams. The choice is yours. Once you’ve done the inner work and created a roadmap that resonates, take action! Make a list of steps you can do right now to get closer to your goals and dreams. You don’t have to know how it’s going to happen, you just have to know it’s going to happen. Something cannot materialize out of nothing. You must create the momentum and energy to create your dreams today. Lastly, don’t forget to make it fun! The more fun you can have running towards your goals, the faster they will run to play with you! I’ll leave you with this:

“The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams.” - Eleanor Roosevelt

A LITTLE STORY ABOUT WHAT MATTERS MOST IN BUSINESS

Excerpt

The statue had been commissioned and placed there years ago by the city fathers (as he thought about it, it seemed to Ben he remembered hearing that Pindar himself had had something to do with this) to remind the city’s inhabitants that when people held very different viewpoints on the same topic, chances were excellent that no one position was wholly right— nor wholly wrong.

He had the vague sense that there was something beyond the four points he had listed on his business card, something important. But he could not identify what it might be. “It all makes sense,” he said out loud, to no one but himself. “Leaders hold a vision. Leaders care about their people. Leaders get their hands dirty and their boots muddy, do the work and make the tough decisions. And leaders stand for something.

The thought brought to mind a comment Karen had made a few days earlier. “They’re good guys,” she had said, speaking of Allen, Augustine, and Frank, “and they all see important aspects of the business. Aspects.”

“It’s about all those things. But . . .” He stopped walking. But at the same time, somehow, it wasn’t about any of those things. He looked around at where he stood. His walk had taken him to the little park by the river where he and Mel used to bring Robbie to play. His legs seemed to have brought him here on their own. He now found himself in the park’s center, facing a statue of an elephant surrounded by four blind men all touching different parts of the animal. 30  VENTRE

He knew the story: each of the four would describe the nature of the beast based on what he could feel of it. One felt a leg, the second the tail, the third the beast’s trunk, and the fourth a tusk—and, not surprisingly, they each concluded it was a completely different thing.

He supposed that was exactly what these four blind men were “seeing”—aspects of the elephant. But wasn’t an elephant far more than the sum of its aspects? Ben thought about that. So what was he missing?

t was the first weekend of spring in 2004 when they first met. After a stressful day working as a mortgage broker, Teresa had a friend in town and they’d decided to go out dancing. Eric and his friend happened to be there on that very same night.

Teresa had no interest in meeting anyone that night. She was there to de-stress and have a great time dancing. But what she didn’t know, is that she was about to meet the man who’d become the catalyst for their journey into entrepreneurship. The dance floor was packed and as Teresa was dancing, she accidently stepped back onto Eric’s foot. As she turned around, she said, “Sorry!” Eric quickly replied, “That’s ok!” Diverting from his usual shy nature he asked, “Would you like to dance?” Without hesitation, Teresa replied, “Yes!” And this is how their story began...

COVER STORY

That is how they met, but the story that I’m going to share with you isn’t one of happily ever after, but a story of challenge, struggle and perseverance. It all began with a book and a challenge. Eric had recently resigned from the military and found a job working for Corporate Express. Because of recent changes happening within the company, everyone was required to read the book, Who Moved My Cheese. The book was intended to help shift their employee’s paradigm regarding change. It had been years since Eric read a book. This book assignment would inevitably create within him a newfound joy of reading. He told Teresa about the book and why he’d read it. She then felt compelled to purchase a book for him titled, The Richest Man in Babylon. It would be the very next book Eric would read. The book had so many golden nuggets regarding building wealth that it sparked within him a heated desire to start building wealth of his own. While the book served as a catalyst, it was merely the tipping point. The biggest push came when Eric was talking with his older brother, who’d recently experienced success as an entrepreneur. He told Eric what he was doing and Eric said, “That sounds risky!” To which he replied, “You’ll always be a good employee. You’re dependable. You show up on time. You work hard. You’ll do ok financially, but you’ll never be able to build true wealth because you’re too analytical 34  VENTRE

and won’t allow yourself to take on risk.” He didn’t know it at the time, but he’d struck a nerve. For the next few months, Eric and Teresa would talk about building wealth, particularly in real estate, because they were told it offered the greatest opportunity. The book, Rich Dad Poor Dad, certainly seemed to validate the claim. Teresa and Eric married exactly one year after they had met. They then moved to Arizona to begin their new lives as entrepreneurs. Getting married, moving to a new state and changing careers all in the same year are three specific actions psychologist say you shouldn’t do. Eric and Teresa did exactly that. It wasn’t an easy road ahead. They experienced huge gains and catastrophic losses, but they were fighters determined to win. However, nothing could have prepared them for what 2008 had in store. After their ventures in real estate and other investments plummeted, they were bankrupt. They sold most of their possessions hoping to raise enough capital to get a new start. They raised just enough to start Reese’s Rocks, a boutique that would sell mid to high-end designer fashions. They had just

enough to get started and knew that even one bad month could bring the entire operation to a halt. The boutique got off to a great start. The store was producing revenue and Eric started doing accounting contract work, which helped to keep things moving along. The store was becoming more popular and profitable with each passing month. All seemed to be going well until that dreadful day in October. The real estate market crashed. Due to panic, other markets followed suit. People were in fear of losing their jobs. Credit dried up. Consumer spending was halted. Sales at Reese’s Rocks were abysmal. Their only hope was that Black Friday was around the corner. Maybe a surge in sales during the holidays could revive

them, but it didn’t. Black Friday wasn’t black at all. In fact, they were so far in the red that they knew it was inevitable that they’d have to close their doors.

the envelope.” He opened the envelope and there was a pregnancy test that read positive. He’d never been so excited and scared in his entire life. Desiring to conceal his analytical thoughts, he gave his wife a big hug and kiss. They were excited about the possibilities and began exploring possible names.

They explored every option to stay afloat, but the writing was on the wall. They began looking for someone who could take over their lease. Fortunately for them, a customer who’d apparently not been affected by the recession offered to take over their lease. They put up their closing sign and reduced prices to try to sell as much as they could. The sale was successful and provided them with roughly three months of runway. Eric was offered a new six-month accounting contract, which was also comforting.

would hardly be enough to sustain them, especially with a baby on the way. Eric started applying for accounting jobs. He didn’t have an accounting degree and the market was filled with others who did, which made his job search extremely difficult. Soon he found himself applying for restaurant jobs, but all he could qualify for was dishwasher, which didn’t pay much at all.

They moved into a one-bedroom condo thinking that was all they’d need to get by. Things went smoothly for the next couple months. One day in March, Eric came home from work to find an envelope on the table. Teresa looked at him with sort of a worried, but pleased smile on her face. He said, “What’s going on?” She replied, “Look in

The month of May came quickly, which represented the end of Eric’s contract. He’d been looking for other work, but found nothing. Teresa had some success with selling product at trade shows, but that

Eventually, they ran through their runway and had no money left. Now unable to afford rent, their situation was grim indeed. The humiliation was almost unbearable. For food, they had no choice but to go to a food bank. Eric would pull his ball cap as close to his eyes as possible, hoping that no one would notice him. They had reached a new low. The food bank helped them, but told them that they needed to file for government food assistance. They VENTREMAGAZINE.COM

were both hesitant. They recalled well the critical judgments passed on those who were on welfare. They thought, “Are we now those people?” Eric’s older sister helped to shift their perspective. She asked, “When you were making money, did you pay taxes?” He replied, “Yes!” She then said, “Well, now you are in need of assistance from the taxes you paid. Don’t feel bad to accept help.” Regardless to how they felt personally, it was either accept help or starve. They went ahead and applied for assistance. Eric kept looking for jobs, but wasn’t able to find anything. One day his older sister, who was manager of a call center said to him, “I know it’s not what you’re used to, but I have a job for you.” Without hesitation, Eric applied for the job. The job only paid $12.00 an hour, but it was better than nothing, he thought. Working in a call center was quite different from any job he’d experienced. Clocking in and out was strictly enforced. Supervisors would occasionally yell at you, “Wrap up that call!” Timing was everything, because the longer the phone calls the more it cost the company to run the call center. Resolve the problem and get the customer off the phone as soon as possible. That’s what they cared about. Employees were nothing more than a number. A number that was easily replaceable. Ajna arrived in October 2009. She was born healthy and brought joy to them both. Although Ajna brought joy, she also brought a new sense of urgency as they realized they’d have new responsibilities. Teresa and Eric knew they had to come up with something to increase their income. The path ahead wasn’t clear, but they remained hopeful. Even though things were tough, they never stopped planning their comeback. While others chatted on their lunch breaks, Eric’s head was stuck in a book learning personal development and business development skills. They were determined to find a way out of their situation. When they’d closed the store, they had an idea. They talked about the cost of traditional advertising, how it generated few customers and how difficult it was to recoup the expense. This led them to the first version of the cost-effective concept, Top Boutique Shop. 36  VENTRE

Eric and Teresa lived in this 1 bedroom condo after having to close Reese’s Rocks.

Top Boutique Shop was geared specifically towards building awareness for fashion boutiques. It was essentially a business directory for boutiques. Starting with $2,500.00 from a mentor and $1,500.00 from Eric’s older sister, they were finally able to commence development on the website. The initial concept was in January 2009 and the product was released in February 2010. The recession was still in full effect, so succeeding with a new business would be difficult. The initial concept for the business was unknown and generated very little interest. Disappointed with the results and having no money to market the idea, the situation became more than Eric could bear. He felt that he’d brought a daughter into this world and could not provide for her. He was extremely disappointed with himself and his life. He sat on the floor by his bed wondering what

He grabbed the pistol from the nightstand. Tears rolled down his face as he reminisced on all the let downs and disappointments. could be done to fix the situation. He could think of nothing. Then the thought came to him that he could end it all, leaving Teresa and his daughter Ajna with the benefits of their insurance policy. The idea seemed noble. He grabbed the pistol from the nightstand. Tears rolled down his face as he reminisced on all the let downs and disappointments. Eric then had a glimpse of his daughter growing up without her father. He thought, “What would mean more to her, the insurance money or having a father who was there for her?” Thoughts filled his mind of when his father died and how his mother, whom under extreme circumstances, provided all she could after losing her husband and the father of her twelve children. He decided there was no way he was going to willfully leave his child without a father. What happened next was astounding. As soon as he’d pulled himself together and put the pistol away, the phone rang. On the other end was a former coworker for the company that he’d previously done contract work. They asked if he’d be able to help with a six-month project. Call it divine intervention or consequence, whatever it was; it could not have come at a better time. Within days, Eric was doing contract work again. While he performed contract work, Teresa worked diligently towards building the business. With a new born at home, Teresa made phone calls and sent emails to

hundreds of boutiques, sharing with them their latest venture. She managed to acquire over 500 boutique listings. Because the site wasn’t well known, they decided to make it free in exchange for having the boutiques as an audience. In late 2011, Eric said to Teresa, “Wouldn’t it be cool if there was a way to create a digital magazine where you could flip through the pages online.” Teresa said, “Yeah! That would be awesome!” About 30 days later, Eric and Teresa were talking with their friend Lee, who informed them that the technology already existed. Lee showed them how it was done. Their eyes lit up with excitement. The next day Eric said to Teresa, “I know you’re probably going to think I’m crazy, but I have an idea. We should start our own fashion magazine to be part of Top Boutique Shop.” Teresa immediately replied, “You’re right, I do think you’re crazy!” He proceeded to sell her on the concept. “Think about it,” he said. We have an audience of fashion boutiques. What designer wouldn’t want to be in front of such an audience?” Teresa said, “I don’t

think it’s a bad concept, I just don’t know anything about designing a magazine!” Eric replied, “Maybe would could learn it.” Teresa decided to give it a shot. The first issue of the magazine was released in May 2012 under the name Fashion Affair. (left) VENTREMAGAZINE.COM

Fashion Affair Magazine generated a lot of interest, mainly because people loved the name. The first few issues were lack luster, but in time, Teresa’s eye and demand for perfection had the magazine looking as good as the top magazines in the industry. They had a product and an audience, but they didn’t have a sales team. Without capital, it was difficult to build a sales team. The best they could do was to offer generous commissions to independent contractors. Being a new magazine without a track record, they couldn’t get in with any of the larger designers; neither did they know how. The up and coming designers wanted to be in the magazine, but they didn’t have the necessary capital. This led Eric to his next wild idea. If they can’t afford to advertise, they can send us product that we can sell in a boutique. “What boutique?” Teresa asked. “The boutique that we will open.” Eric said. “We don’t have money to open a boutique.” She said. Eric replied, “Let’s try to raise the money. If we can’t then we won’t do it.” Teresa said, “ok!”

Unable to raise additional capital, they had to find a way to keep their personal expenses low. One way they decided to do this was joining Caretakers of America. Caretakers of America is a program that provides homeowners of vacant properties with tenants who use their furniture to decorate, which makes the home more appealing. They live in and maintain a property until it is sold. Rent was only a few hundred dollars per month, which was much more affordable than standard rent prices in the Denver area. The program seemed like a viable way to save money, so they moved forward with it. What they couldn’t anticipate was that Denver was on the verge of a dramatic bounce back from the real estate debacle of recent years. Homes started selling faster with each

Fearing judgement, they did their best to not disclose this to any of their peers.

They managed to raise $10,000.00. Teresa said, “That’s not enough to open a boutique.” Eric 38  VENTRE

immediately went to work trying to figure out how to make it work. He found a relatively inexpensive unit in downtown Denver for the boutique. They both looked for items on craigslist where the unit could be decorated. It wasn’t a very large space so filling it wouldn’t be difficult. In July 2012, the boutique was opened and they had $800.00 remaining. They figured they could raise more capital when they needed it.

They moved 8 times over a “Papa! Stop working!” span of 18 months.

passing month. They had to move on an average of 3 months, instead of the anticipated 6 months to a year, making the program more of a nuisance than a solution. Teresa felt as soon as she had the last box emptied, she was turning right around to pull decor off the walls. The number of showings per day increased, making living conditions difficult. In some cases, it was humiliating. Fearing judgment, they did their best to not disclose this to any of their peers. Judgment was the least of their problems. While July, August and September went well and showed promise, the month of October was abysmal. That old familiar feeling of failure encompassed their every thought. The website for Top Boutique Shop was corrupted and would no longer function. They had a few ad sales through the magazine, but that wasn’t nearly enough to keep them afloat. They reached out to their previous investor, who told them that since President Obama was reelected, they weren’t confortable investing, as they feared a tax hike. November came and went. Black Friday was a joke. Maybe three customers came in the boutique that day. December wasn’t much better. With all the money now gone, they knew they had no choice but to start working on an exit strategy. They worked with the landlord to find a new tenant.

With only Fashion Affair Magazine in play, Eric decided to look for more contract work while Teresa focused on the magazine. Nearly eight weeks passed before Eric was able to secure a new accounting contract. Just when things seemed they couldn’t get worse, he was given a new contract making more on an hourly basis than he had on any previous contract. They had more breathing room

to try and make things work. Although they appreciated the breathing room, there was much work to be done. This meant long hours sitting at the computer, which would jeopardize family time. Eric recalls a moment with Ajna

as if it were yesterday. She walked up to him with tears in her eyes and screamed loudly in frustration, “Papa! Stop working!” He then realized he needed to make some adjustments and keep things in perspective; understanding the business required attention but his daughter required far more.

Their recent struggle only served as verification that their needed to be some sort of system that would allow small businesses a fighting chance for survival. They went back to work on the concept. They decided this time the model shouldn’t cater only to boutiques, but to all small businesses. It wouldn’t just be a directory, but a place where business could post coupons, events and more. By March 2014, they were more than ready to leave the Caretakers program. They’d moved eight times over a span of eighteen months. February marked the final month they would do the program. They moved into a home on the weekend. Five days later, there was a contract on that home, meaning they’d have to move again in roughly 30 days. At that point, they were done. Ajna was becoming of age and would be in school soon. They decided it was time to settle down, which they did. VENTREMAGAZINE.COM

About this time they’d also completed the latest version of their project. The name of the business was changed from Top Boutique Shop to The Link since they now represented a more diverse group of businesses. Later that same year, they were told by a consultant that the site layout and coding was outdated and they wouldn’t be able to scale unless they modernized and gave the site a more professional image. Frustrated and disappointed that they essentially wasted hard earned money on a site that now needed to be rebuilt, they contemplated throwing in the towel. However, their vision was much bigger than the website itself. Accepting that the website was just part of a much bigger picture, they decided to rebuild. In April 2014, Teresa, feeling overworked and underpaid, decided to go on a four day fast with hopes to gain clarity. She loved being Editor in Chief of Fashion Affair Magazine but felt as if it was demanding too much of her time. She was spending more than ten hours per day staring at a computer screen; missing precious moments as her beautiful daughter blossomed. She made the logical decision to halt Fashion Affair Magazine and get back into her other passion; Interior Design & Decorating. This dramatic change enabled her to devote more time to her maturing daughter and VENTRE’s new system.

When the craziness of their lives settled a bit, they launched VENTRE Magazine, which replaced Fashion Affair. VENTRE was more in alignment with the new all-small-businesses concept. In May 2016, the new website was completed with far more features than were included previously. The name of the business was changed from The Link to VENTRE, which is a combination of the words venture and entrepreneur. Today, VENTRE is an organization that creates costeffective resources to help their members thrive in business. Their goal is to develop solutions that work. Teresa and Eric are admired for their perseverance and how they stuck together as a couple during times that would have torn most relationships asunder. They are oftentimes asked how they managed to stay together. Their response is usually the same each time, “It’s simple. We both want the same thing and we’re willing to fight for it.” They are currently working on new programs to be released in 2017. Their mission is to make it easier for entrepreneurs to achieve their dreams. As the Chinese philosopher Confucius said in a form, “Our greatest accomplishment is not in never falling, but in how well we rise every time we fall.”

SOLVING BACKPAIN THROUGH ELEGANT SENSING AND CUSTOM COACHING

Back pain is the most prevalent source of chronic pain, and the leading cause of disability for Americans under the age of 45. Working at desks, slouching over phones, and leaning over keyboards, millions of people put themselves at risk for back pain because of poor posture. Awareness of posture is key to transforming bad habits that form early and do damage over time. By holding your body in good posture, you strengthen your core and supporting muscles, building good musle memory and protecting your back. Good posture is also tied to everything from stress to confidence, appearance, and general well-being. So what if we had a sensitive and subtle way to know immediately when we started to slouch, a quiet reminder felt only by ourselves? The Lumo Lift approaches posture in a way that’s never been done before. Clipped onto your shirt, right below your collarbone using a secure magnetic clasp, the Lumo Lift tracks your posture and activity. Using subtle vibrations as feedback, it will gently vibrate to remind you to straighten up your posture every time you begin to slouch. Patented biomechanics monitoring sensors in the Lumo Lift use angle displacement as a measure to let you know when your body slouches away from what you’ve calibrated as your standard of good posture. The customizable time delay for vibrational feedback allows for a personalized posture coaching experience. With the integration of technology, the Lumo Lift is the agent of change needed to improve your posture long-term. Being able to consistently sit and stand with a posture that supports overall health and well-being involves learning with the body as well as with the mind. The Lumo Lift situates learning in real time, permitting you to make the steady small adjustments that quickly become vitally useful habits in daily life. L U M O B O D Y T E C H . C O M

Ladies, imagine a sustainable product that could replace your need for tampons and pads. A stylish and comfortable pair of underwear that works as a double agent to keep you clean and dry during you’re menstrual cycle. THINX does just that! “Every pair of THINX has a top layer that wicks all liquid into a thin absorption layer right beneath, so that you feel super dry. This way you can wear’em all day long.” THINX women’s underwear are designed, by women in New York City, to absorb the liquid while keeping you dry and feeling clean. “By reimagining feminine hygiene products to provide support, comfort, confidence, and peace of mind, we aim to eliminate shame, empowering women around the world.”

THINX can be worn in addition to tampons or pads; and yes, even as an alternative! THINX is also working towards a greater goal. They have partnered with AFRIpads in Uganda, which trains women to work for themselves making and selling reusable pads. Each pair of underwear you purchase helps to fund this cause. This cause in turn give girls access to protection during their cycle to help prevent them from missing school. According to the article, Women can Bleed Green on alternet.org, a woman throws away 250 to 300 pounds of feminine hygiene products in her lifetime. In addition the Ocean Conservancy found that tampon applicators made up 2.2% of debris on U.S. coastlines.

Consider all the waste that could be avoided by purchasing and wearing THINX.

MONEY MANTRA

W

with Kristen Judd

hat is your Money Mantra? My money what???!!! Yes, your money mantra. How do you really feel about

money? Often times we don’t realize how we really feel about money until some kind of crazy question is proposed to us. We are going to break down a little psychology about your money. We may not even realize what we feel and say about money until it is brought to our attention. In my Wine, Women, and Wealth events we spend quite a bit of time talking about the “emotional side” of money. I always say – Money will make people crazy if we let it.

48  VENTRE

|

Entrepreneurial Lifestyle Magazine

So you will need to sit in a quiet space and do a little homework. You might even want to do it with your partner – they will be able to give you some insight as to some things that you are saying about money without you realizing it. Here are a few questions to start with (and if you aren’t sure – skip it and keep going until you can answer it): 1. What is your Money Mantra? 2. What do you think about money? 3. How much is a lot of money? 4. How much is too much money? 5. How much is too little money? 6. What are the negative thoughts about money that you have? 7. How much time are you spending to try and save money? 8. How much time are spending to try and connect with new money? Wow! It can be kind of crazy and completely uncomfortable to be in a space to really look at those questions – let alone actually answer them! I get it. Society has virtually made it impossible for anyone to say the word money that many times. It should definitely be outlawed right? No. In fact, whatever you are obsessed with you will in fact get exactly that. So, if you are obsessed with problems surrounding money, you will get that and more of it. We should be a society that isn’t afraid to talk about money. I truly believe that because it has become so taboo to talk about money that that is the reason that we have the credit card debt as high as we do as a country, and the student debt that we do as a country. It is also the reason that we have so many people living paycheck to paycheck.

“No one ever intended to give you your money mantra. If they did, and you don’t agree with it, it happened by accident and YOU have the power to change it.”

change it? You absolutely can, but it takes time and EFFORT – it is like changing a habit – you have to be very conscious all the time in order to create a healthy and loving relationship with money. I know, I sound crazy! Money is energy. You can attract it and do good things with it or you can repel it and not have enough. Money also likes attention. So the more time you spend with it – the more it will show up and even multiply. If you ignore money, it will act like a jealous girlfriend/boyfriend and go find someone to pay attention to it. I found this to be true in my own life. It can be scary to have to start doing a little work around money, but those myths that you have about money – they just don’t exist. There are plenty of resources out there to help you do the work around your money mantra and if you would like them, please feel free to reach out to me. Good luck with this. It will be a great place for you to start especially if have some New Year’s Resolutions surrounding money. In fact, if you do this homework, you will be guaranteed to succeed at getting that list taken care of. Find an accountability partner. Start a money club, attend some financial education classes and find someone who isn’t emotional about your money. You can start winning at the money game if you just allow yourself to do so! Many Blessings to you and your family!

Sometimes we were absolutely given our money mantra while growing up. Sometimes we only had to hear something one time, at the right time and have it stick with us the rest of our lives. As parents, we have to be very particular about what we are saying about money in front of and to our kids. Were you given a scarcity mentality? There is never enough money. Money is hard to come by. You have to work hard for your money. Money doesn’t grow on trees. Money is Evil (the love of money is evil, by the way). The list goes on. No one ever intended to give you your money mantra. If they did, and you don’t agree with it, you have the power to change it. They genuniely thought they were doing you a favor. So, what is your money mantra? Would you like to

High-vaulted ceilings house meat lovers, fish lovers and vegetarians alike. Yes, a truce for dinner has been called. he tranquility of the Chesapeake Bay comes to life like a painting from the large windows in your suite. Annapolis Waterfront is the only downtown hotel; there simply is no competition.

Soak yourself to an altered state of mind in Room 620, where the voices of your boss fade away to the lowest, irrelevant hum. A Jacuzzi soaking tub for two will thread every sore muscle back together again. And a glass of wine doesn’t hurt the process either. The water is piping hot and generous, much like that warm welcome you got when you first checked in. Staying an extra night or two is quite easy in these parts. We find the Annapolis Waterfront Hotel provides uncommon luxury in a delightful setting. It’s even safe to say you will not want to venture too far from this idyllic resting place. But Annapolis will do its very best to tempt you...

ontinuing that neighborhood vibe, you will find another local treasure just a short jaunt from The Annapolis Waterfront Hotel. Carrol’s Creek Cafe.

Moments from laying our eyes on the award-winning menu, pants already got tighter in anticipation. The cream of crab soup hits every note and will please the most jaded nautical palate. An immediate warning went across the table as spoon lines were drawn—this cat is not sharing. Jumbo shrimp over polenta (my personal fave) does not disappoint. Finished with a white wine sauce, your eyes will start to wander over to the neighboring tables

and their smart choices. The surf & turf specials demand a return trip. The scallop snob across from me barely lifted his eyes once from his plate. Dinner finished off swimmingly with coffee and espresso creme brulee. The waterfront views and stellar food are the real stars here and keep the locals coming back. But do think of the micro beers as the supporting cast. Open for breakfast, lunch, dinner, we became instant fans of this veteran waterfront eatery located in the casually upscale Restaurant Row in Eastport.

o get the one up on every man, woman and leprechaun in Annapolis, we opted for an early lunch at a local favorite. Firmly in the shadows of famed TV show “Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives,” check this place off your bucket list fast.

When in Rome, do as the Romans. A visit that didn’t start with eggnog ended in eggnog heaven. Not really even a personal fan, my attitude was quickly changed. If the specialty menu doesn’t win you over, the buzz about town that the eggnog has arrived will. Distilled and bottled in Ireland, this stuff is no joke and the natives mark their calendars. With a pleasant, chocolate martini eggnog buzz, we laughed over the perfectly browned Crab & Artichoke dip, savory Shepard Pie and server-suggested Salmon Galway Bay topped with jumbo lump crab meat. We oohed and aahed over the Medieval Beef Stew and Corned Beef & Cabbage as it passed by our table. Everything is hearty and will put you in a vacation state of mind. With exposed brick and wood trim, the space is warm, rustic and eclectic and the service quick and attentive. The locals apologized for the winter weather we were having, but made up for it in kindness every step of the way. Experiencing Galway Bay in winter coats and warm mugs seemed actually quite fitting. Apologies not needed. When you think of Galway Bay Restaurant & Pub, think neighborhood good vibes and a smiley bartender who would scream your name if they knew you. Duly noted should also be the lager and ale, brewed by the host with the most. At this doorstop on Maryland Avenue, a fine meal and good Irish hospitality await you.

by Emily Moore

Here we are! We made it! Happy New Year and welcome to 2017! 2016 was a tumultuous year enveloped in election coverage that might have been the most widely discussed topic and most volatile election in our history. It was nearly impossible to ignore. Even if you couldn’t care less about the outcome, you could be drawn into a discussion. It was a year of division, anger, and even triumph for some. While half the country was celebrating the other half was left in disbelief and mourning. Overall, I think it’s safe to say that most of us were incredibly grateful to finally have this drawn out process behind us. It’s time to concentrate on ourselves and the goals we set for the New Year. This is the time of new resolutions. We sound the war horns of change, put on our gear and prepare to battle for betterment. We raise expectations while stepping up our intentions, putting them into action to exceed our prior years resolutions. If only we had renewed motivation each day, we would not have to look back at what we should’ve, would’ve or could’ve done. No matter what your resolution is, it’s important that you stand behind proven methods to make these promises to yourself possible. When you wake up in the morning, take note of your living space. Is it messy or organized? Years of studies have proven that the more organized your living space is, the 80  VENTRE

more clear minded you will be.

20

What’s the first thing you do upon waking? For many, it’s making that first pot of coffee to get going. Caffeine is a tool that many of us use and it can be a good way for some to begin their day. However, your frame of mind is really what will ultimately awaken your thirst for life. When achieving goals that you set, no matter how big or small, this process can give you the drive needed to pop out of bed as if you already had your daily caffeine fix. Imagine not being able to sleep because you’re so excited for the next day! Take time to evaluate yourself, what emotions do you feel when you think about the tasks you need to accomplish? How do you feel about yourself and your abilities? With self-evaluation, you will pinpoint the dusty old routines that are no longer effective.

“It’s time to set a new alarm for life and to STOP hitting the snooze button.”

017 You’ll also gain access to valuable data showing how your morning rituals determine the quality of your day. If you do not awaken to an environment that inspires you, make a shift to change it. If you have to pretend to put on your super hero badge to help make the world a better place, DO IT! If you don’t believe in yourself or your abilities, it’s time to find out what it will take to become your own hero. It’s time to set a new alarm for life and to STOP hitting the snooze button.

Routines are proven and effective tools to establish boundaries and get through tedious tasks. However, they can become monotonous and give you tunnel vision instead of unleashing the visionary side of yourself that spurs excitement. Even though sticking with routines yield success in accomplishments, it’s important to stop to smell the roses once in awhile. Keep life interesting. Allow your mind to expand and recognize new pieces of the puzzle that could be the missing. The universe is always sending clues, but you have to be present to receive them. Creating deadlines can also be a fantastic way to reach your accomplishments. Setting deadlines have shown to produce results more often than not. Do you ever wonder why sales departments produce more sales during the last quarter or month of the year? It’s not due to market trends. It’s because the

heat is on, deadlines are created, and deadlines must be met. Bottom line, when you start making your happiness a priority at the start of each day, you will shift your attitude from autopilot to that of thriving mentor. Everything in your life will produce the results based on the level of enthusiasm you exude. It will flow through your veins. Your energy will attract more opportunities and the people surrounding you will raise their frequency and desire to produce more.

Tomorrow is not always the answer to your problem. Take action today, making changes that will allow you to start each day with enthusiasm and passion. The key to unlock your potential is anxiously waiting. Days turn into weeks, weeks turn into months and months turn into years. If the approach to each day were the same as our approach to the beginning of a new year, the outcome would be nothing short of amazing! Emily Moore Lingows.com Emily@lingows.com 720-244-8622

COCONUT OIL is very useful for weight loss. It contains short and medium-chain fatty acids that help in taking off excessive weight. It is also easy to digest and it helps in healthy functioning of the thyroid and endocrine system. Further, it increases the body’s metabolic rate by removing stress on the pancreas, thereby burning more energy and helping obese and overweight people lose the weight. Hence, people living in tropical coastal areas, who use coconut oil every day as their primary cooking oil, are normally not fat, obese or overweight. CITRUS AURANTIUM extract is extensively used in weight management products and as thermogenic agents. They are also used in sports performance products to enhance stamina. CAURANTIUM extract is widely known as bitter orange extract, a product that is derived from the immature (green) fruits of the Seville orange. Bitter orange extract is used in weight management products due to its purported effects on metabolic processes, including an increase in basal metabolic rate and lipolysis as well as mild appetite suppression. GREEN TEA extract is a product made from the Camellia sinensis plant. It is used for weight loss and to treat stomach disorders. Hoodia is a succulent, fleshy cactus-like plant of the Asclepiad family, which is an original inhabitant of the Kalahari desert in Africa. Among its many varieties, Hoodia Gordonii is the most popular because its extracts suppress hunger and effectively helps reduce weight and fat percentage.

NAKED HEALTHY

NAKED HEALTHY ROOT OF THE SOLUTION BY ADAM GATES

There it sits in your produce section, like a paratrooper ready to jump, anxiously waiting to ease your winter. It’s a bonafide super herb found growing in precious soil and it benefits every part of your body from bones to brain. Yet, it’s one of the most widely underrated and underused pieces of produce by consumers. The reason is because its superiority isn’t yet common knowledge and many lack knowledge of how to properly use it. Just refreshing my information for this article made me want to rush to the kitchen to make ginger tea. It’s not just good; it’s great for you! Ginger is shown to reduce pain better than meds. It reduces inflammation, improves brain function, protects your heart, lowers cholesterol, fights cancer and clears skin. The list goes on, so lets get to it. How it works: Most diseases, illnesses and ailments are caused by inflammation. Inflammation stems from the digestive system and the foods you’re putting into it on a regular basis. Mental illness, allergies, cancer, arthritis and blood pressure all depend on the type of gut bacteria you grow. Gut bacteria grow directly from what you feed yourself. (side note: you have 100 trillion!) They’re extremely important. They exist in your digestive system where inflammation is caused. Want to reduce inflammation? Put fruits and veggies in there! Some help more than others. Ginger is one of the kings. Ginger is a prebiotic. It hails a specific type of fiber which causes good gut bacteria to grow and is one of the best solutions in the world by which you can improve your health. If you suffer from migraines, nausea, bad mood swings, have memory problems, bad PMS, bad breath, arthritis, high blood pressure, constipation, etc., ginger will help fix it. 90  VENTRE

|

Entrepreneurial Lifestyle Magazine

In many cases, it does so immediately. Reducing inflammation of your blood vessels has rippling effects. Can you see how that would quickly aid a headache or help lower your blood pressure? As a result of reduced swelling, you’ll experience increased brain function, improved reaction time and working memory. Did you know that constipation is linked to over 70 diseases? Crazy right? At least until you think about what it really is. It’s waste that cannot properly leave your body. That is never good! Ginger aids in emptying your tummy because it improves digestion, which allows you to have bowel movements with much greater ease. There are few things more time-wasting than sitting on a toilet not being able to go. Ginger goes into your body and kicks ass like Superman. The best part is that you only need about 1.5 grams a day to reap all these benefits. Throw it in a smoothie (delicious with blueberries), juice it or cook with it (Asian dishes). Last, but not least, those winter flu like symptoms; congested chest, stuffy head, body aches and cold kingpin-pain-in-the-ass single stuffed nostril, I have your Schwarzenegger. Ginger Tea: Dice 2 inches of peeled ginger, add about 15 washed mint leaves, then add to water boiling at med-high heat for 10-15 minutes. In a heat-safe mug, have 1 squeezed lemon and a 2-3 second squirt of local honey waiting. Pour the ginger-mint water into the mug, drink and enjoy the benefits. If there is an ailment in your body, it can usually be fixed with proper foods. Don’t forget, plants were here long before pills! As Hippocrates stated, “Let food be thy medicine, and medicine by thy food.” Happy New Year!!!!

JUST BEAN YOURSELF

JUST BEAN YOURSELF What do you look for in a cup of coffee? If you’re anything like us at VENTRE, you appreciate full flavor with a BIG kick! How do they get that boost in one cup of joe? We will let the experts at BOMB coffee tell you...

“BOMB Coffee is a veteran owned coffee company comprised of four dudes that set out on a joint mission to develop the world’s strongest coffee with BOMB flavor. We’ve spent a long time sourcing the world’s finest Robusta coffee beans and fine tuning our roasting process to ensure every cup of BOMB Coffee delivers maximum caffeine levels without compromising taste.” 94  VENTRE

|

Entrepreneurial Lifestyle Magazine

Part of that hard work is ensuring that each bean is, “naturally cultivated by family owned farms, harvested and imported with extreme care, roasted to order for maximum freshness.” Quick coffee bean course for those of us that lack the expertise of BOMB Coffee: The two main coffee beans are Arabica and Robusta. We are focusing on Robusta because it is the chosen one at BOMB Coffee. Robusta coffee beans have double the percentage of caffeine per bean than the Arabica coffee bean while also containing less sugar. Which makes it obvious why BOMB Coffee has chosen it for its bean of choice! Coffee with an attitude!

Enough with the chemistry, let’s talk about BOMB coffee! BOMB Coffee comes ready to brew and in beloved K-cups for those of us who love the convenience of a single brew. Per a Gallup article by Lydia Saad, “just under two-thirds of U.S. adults drink at least one cup of coffee a day; coffee drinkers average about 2.7 cups per day, unchanged from 1999.” That is a bigger portion than American’s that voted in our recent presidential election! It also shows that while most trades can be wiped out or heavily hindered by recession or tough economic times, people will still buy their coffee. Good news for hardworking companies like BOMB coffee. With the amount of American’s drinking coffee each day, it’s safe to say we have found at least one thing that unities us!

UNLIFE is an invite-only gathering of the nations top businessmen, influencers, misfits and entrepreneurs, all trying to kick a little dent into history. Come join 30 hand selected ruckusmakers for a weekend designed to amplify, disrupt, inspire, and build community. This is an intimate group event - You will speak up and be heard, you will be surrounded by people eager to learn and to share what they’ve learned in a completely unfiltered and raw setting. We’ll start Friday night and end Sunday around noon. This 3 day leadership retreat is intentionally designed for aggressive personalities with a desire to build intentional community, disrupt the status quo, and have real life changing impact through their work. UNLIFE was started because In 2013, for the Summer marketing campaign for RUCKUS, we thew a series of 3 Pool Parties in conjunction with RedBull. They were amazing. Thousands of people came, there was free food, drinks, national headlining acts for music, but at the end of the third party, we were driving away and had one of the most honest conversations as a brand we have ever had... We simply said “FOR WHAT?!” Don’t get us wrong, they were great parties, and we the brand got a ton of “impressions” (whatever that means), but at the end of it all, we were left feeling extremely

96  VENTRE

|

Entrepreneurial Lifestyle Magazine

empty, and honestly, kind of worthless. We had raised a ton of money and thrown some huge parties. That was it. We weren’t helping anyone, we weren’t building DEEP or MEANINGFUL relationships or community. We were simply arranging convenient and shallow entertainment, nothing more. We knew that as a brand, as a company, and as responsible business owners and leaders, we had to develop something more. We had to develop something that actually meant something. At the core of what RUCKUS is, we want to only be about 2 things: 1) Bringing hope and confidence into a broken world. 2) Building Community. So - we switched our Summer marketing campaign the following year on its head (honestly, that’s probably giving ourselves too much credit, it was more of an experiment than anything). We set out to grow DEEP within our community and clientele, not WIDE. We thought; What would happen - if instead of growing shallow with 3 thousand people, we brought together some of the best leaders, trendsetters, and ruckusmakers we know and grow DEEP with only 30 people. A Manhattan Project of the new age. And with that, the Ruckus UNLIFE Retreat was born.

HEART AT WORK

few years ago Drü and Asher were similar to many young couples pursuing the American dream. Drü was managing a chain of coffee stores and Asher was building her photography business and taking care of their young children and foster children. Dedicated Christians, the Collies have a heart for children in need. While considering adopting a child from Africa, Asher came across a YouTube Video on jiggers and their devastating impact on children. Jiggers burrow into feet

and lay eggs which multiply and damage tissue, causing great pain and horrible infections. As Asher read more about this problem half a world away, she knew the Lord had placed a burden on her heart for these children who couldn’t defend themselves against an almost invisible foe. During trips to Africa, she realized the solution was simple: closed Toe shoes would protect children’s feet from jiggers. Consequently, Asher took the first step, which was creating the pattern that is used at shoe cutting

parties all over the world. Drü fully supported Asher’s efforts after he visited Uganda and personally saw the problem up close... while removing jiggers from the foot of a small child. Working together with an amazing team of high-energy and committed people, they now have a plan, a vision, and core values. Sole Hope is making an impact one vulnerable person at a time by holding medical clinics, providing education, and jobs for and with the beautiful souls in Uganda. Like many other problems and

diseases the ignorance around jiggers is a huge hurdle in the battle. Education will be key in keeping children and families jigger-free. Therefore, Sole Hope is taking action. Each child receives individual education before they leave our clinics; in addition to the villages that we work in, and schools. They are taught to wear their shoes and take care of jiggers when they are first noticed in the feet and are much easier to remove.

HEART AT WORK

WHAT ARE JIGGERS?

Jiggers (NOT CHIGGERS- jiggers are parasitic burrowers) are small chigoe fleas that live in the dust, and are found on the dirt floors in schools and the homes of many families in Uganda and other similar climates. These parasitic insects cling to livestock and transfer jiggers into homes primarily in rural areas. The female jiggers burrow into the surface of skin that has been exposed to the flea. Once embedded in the body, the jigger lays eggs and creates up to pea-size egg sacks and continues to multiply by laying more eggs. These wounds are painful, and cause difficulties for victims in daily activities such as walking, playing, and attending school. The infection can lead to severe inflammation, ulceration and fibrosis. It can also cause lymphangitis, gangrene, sepsis, and the loss of toenails, amputation of the digits, and death may also occur. There is also a social stigma and shame associated with the victims of jiggers which causes them to hide the problem which makes it worse. While jiggers in small numbers are not deadly, the secondary infections (gangrene, tetanus and other diseases) caused by jiggers can be fatal.

CORE VALUES

Relief: We believe in addressing the very real and present problems associated with the feet through medical intervention as well as taking preventative physical measures.

Education:

We believe that education of the youth and their caretakers is essential for long-term solutions.

Sustainability: We believe in supporting communities and teaching the trade of shoe making. We innovate and demonstrate solutions that combine the best of indigenous and contemporary practice to create sustainable skills and employment. 114  VENTRE
