A injured fledgling Black Kite found by Mr Praveen, a Pharmacist at CMC was handed over to Dr. Sushil John at LCECU. Dr. Sushil looked after the Kite over many months and was able to release it at College Hill after a couple of attempts.

The Black Kite (Milvus migrans) is a medium sized bird of prey and around Vellore it is probably the largest bird of prey. It is found in Asia, Africa, Australia and Europe. It is found in abundance in a few places in Vellore. They are opportunistic hunters and often scavenge.

With every new development, CMC ensures that nature is well protected and preserved. The new campus at Ranipet has the following nature protecting measures.

» 40 to 50% of water demand will be sourced through recycled water

» 2 Units of 450 KLD STP plants installed

» Effluent waste to be treated in the facility

» 2 large rain water harvesting tanks with 2 lakh litre capacity to store the water

» 2 Megawatt solar panels installed

» 30% of demand sourced through internal solar panels

» Ranipet campus is committed to develop 15% (approx. 12 acres) of the total land area as greenbelt area by planting plants and shrubs. Green initiative measures is put in place to protect the local ecosystem and biodiversity of the campus

» The entire campus is committed to achieve “Zero Liquid Discharge” where all the water utilised is recycled and reused and no liquid effluent is discharged into open land surface/ waterbody which completely eliminates the environmental pollution associated with water treatment

Dr Sushil describes his experience looking after the kite as a “wonderful hobby during the intense 1st pandemic lockdown”. When he received the kite, it was quite traumatized and remained hunched over most of the time and was unable to fly. Over some days it got better and he and his older son would ‘exercise’ it to help it learn to fly. It was fed a variety of meat cut into pieces and was finally given live farmed quails. Caring for the flora and fauna around us is a part of working in the Spirit of Christ.
